First look: 18m Explorer Yacht OC188
- Toby Hodges
- November 16, 2023
The new OC188 from KM Yachtbuilders and designed by Owen Clarke, is built as a go-anywhere bluewater cruiser, that is capable of circumnavigations
Product Overview
Designed for extended remote cruising including a circumnavigation, OC188 is six months into its aluminium construction at alloy experts KM Yachtbuilders in Makkum. Its experienced owner wanted an easily handled yacht with good performance together with the volume that could accommodate an owner’s cabin and three double guest cabins.
A low aspect ballasted keel with lifting centreboard helps provide the desired shoal draught of 1.4m while giving sailing performance and pointing abilities when lowered to 3.8m. Meanwhile twin rudders help allow for the yacht to lay up safely. The decision between this and a full lifting keel such as aboard Lynx – also designed my Owen Clark – comes down to the added performance benefits of a deeper keel and whether you can live with the keel case in the interior, says Clarke. In this case it was not deemed necessary to impact the interior to that extent, especially as the owners plan to spend long periods of time aboard.
Where Qilak was designed with a tall rig to sail quickly between the far north and south, here that is not so relevant and cruising ease and comfort take priority. The carbon mast has triple headstays to make it easy to move through the gears and set reaching sails.
The OC 188 is a distinctive, purposeful looking design. Standouts include the amount of covered and protected space and the solar capacity on the pilothouse and fixed bimini. The aft cockpit and transom design also looks innovative as it includes a large lower deck to store a solid tender (the owner did not want a garage such as aboard Qilak). Instead the dinghy is launched via an Atlas heavy lift carbon davit, which can mount in several locations. This then leaves an expansive aft terrace for lounging at anchor.
Another key difference over the 15m is to be found in the pilothouse which is large enough to act as the primary saloon for eight guests plus a navstation. The galley to starboard is then split on two levels. A workshop or multifunctional hold with space for a trail bike can be accessed through the interior or a central cockpit hatch, and there’s dedicated sports equipment stowage plus a large foc’sle that can house a second inflatable tender.

Now step aboard Zaphira . The Bill Upfold-designed, Elite 18-metre Mid Pilothouse was built by the team at Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders, and the loving care and attention that has gone into every detail is clearly evident. Zaphira ’s hull started out life as a spec boat in those distant days before covid, but her current owners came on board quite early in the build process, and were able to put their stamp on the interior and the overall finished product. The efficient hull with its Upfold-signature silent chines is based on other earlier 18-metre Elites, but the detailing and styling is custom-designed and built to the owners’ specifications.

‘Inveni Portum, Spes et Fortuna valete’
Sichterman Inveni 18M
The aluminium Inveni combines elements of the famous Dutch Lemsteraken sailing vessels with innovative luxury motor yacht design.
The Inveni is the kind of vessel on which its owners can travel from the Russian to the Mediterranean Sea. The vertical bow gives the Inveni a classic appearance, which is what designer Cor D. Rover aimed for.
The timeless design of the Inveni, is combined with the latest in innovations from the super yachting world.
The Hull Vane and the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF), both designed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects and never used in a single vessel of this size, work together to make the yacht generate less waves, have a longer range at cruise speed and a lower fuel consumption.
On top of this, the Seakeeper technology eliminates boat roll significantly.
Sichterman not only sets itself apart with its exterior aesthetics and technological innovations. With the mounting cost of furnishing and styling luxury yachts, we decided to disrupt the interior process as well.
With our innovative interior program, we’ve made it possible to build yachts up to 6 months faster at a set price.
Choose your
Interior style.
The following styles can be implemented in the Sichterman fleet:
Fantastic Eclectic
Elegant lines flow into dynamic details, borrowed from the world of classy sports cars.
The interior presents a fresh and inviting Mediterranean style, characterized by simple and romantic aesthetics of Southern European countries.
Sporty Elegance
An exciting fusion of glamour and beauty, artistically decorated to create an exclusive experience. The perfect style for a home away from home.
It provides a balance between classic and contemporary design. This results in a warm and delicate interior style.
Comfortable Lounging
A warm, harmonious and inviting style, which allows you to feel at home. This interior variation uses simple forms and strong lines that are equal parts modern and cozy.
The classic combinations are elevated with texture variations, to create a narrative that immediately catches the viewer’s attention.
Within these styles, the client can choose from a selection of fabrics and materials, to create a unique and personal yacht. This ensures that every yacht caters to the needs and wishes of its owners.

Cara Marine 18m, HOUND OF ROYAL CLARENCE
Cara Marine, S. Ireland, Cara Marine 18m Built 2004 / £299,950, VAT paid
Broker’s Comments
We love these Cara Marine boats. There are few motor-yachts available that have a commercial heritage—Dale Nelson, Seaward (again the Nelson/TT shape), North-Line, Aquastar, and Lochin are among those few. Cara Marine, based in Carrigaline in County Cork and later acquired by VT Halmatic, was building pilot vessels for the North and Irish Seas. They were commissioned to build, to Lloyds Certified Category A RCD standards, an 18-metre motor-yacht using the same commercial patrol boat hull paired with a pair of Hamilton water-jets.
While water-jets are now the preferred drivetrain for the offshore wind industry, the Spanish Government’s Rodman 101 interceptor, the UK Shannon Class Royal National Lifeboats, and many other reliability-driven applications, they were not as common in the early 2000s and were considered somewhat exotic. However, they are staggeringly good—super reliable, allowing for shoal-draft operation with no issues of entanglement and stern-gear damage, and their close-quarter handling is breathtaking. With far fewer moving parts, general servicing is simpler, and they have longer periods between overhaul requirements, making them great for higher workloads.
That said, the hull has to be good—and this hull is über-capable—especially when running into foul weather. With its huge strength (closely spaced main ribs with substantial stringers), she feels absolutely solid. The wheelhouse layout affords excellent levels of protection while keeping her crew in touch with their surroundings by rolling up the aft canvas screens. The wrap-around aft seating and twin table arrangement works very well indeed. The helm console is sheathed in substantial teak, so there is no reflection on the screen, and she has a purposeful, yacht-style feel throughout. Her interior joinery is a satin gloss cherry with blond timber inlay, very well-finished, and smartly conceals a vast amount of storage space on board. The interior saloon is well-raised to starboard, with sweeping panoramic views from the comfortable seating. Companionways lead forward through the dropped full-beam galley to the en-suite master cabin in the bow, and then aft to a pair of twin cabins which share a very well-appointed heads/shower compartment to port.
Cara Marine 18m, HOUND OF ROYAL CLARENCE has been diligently and sympathetically maintained over the years and has been in her present ownership since 2012. She is an ultra-reliable technological ‘tour-de-force’, displaying class-leading build quality and impeccable seakeeping, combined with the attention to detail, luxury, and comfort expected from the most exclusive custom motor yachts. Her Hamilton Jet control system has recently been professionally upgraded to a full mechanical system (replacing the previous hydraulic controls), and she has just had a tip-to-toe valet for the 2024 summer season!

Manufacturer’s Comments
Professional standards of seakeeping and manoeuvrability are now available to the discerning private owner with the introduction of Cara Marine’s 18m luxury motor yacht.
Characteristics that prompted a leading UK harbour authority to comment “Cara (build)… one of the finest, if not THE finest pilot launch in the world”, are now incorporated into a new design that offers the proven Safety, Ease-of-Handling, and Operational Integrity of a commercial craft, with the Luxury of a ‘Quality Build’ Motor Yacht.
Waterjet propulsion provides outstanding berthing capabilities, good low speed handling, safety, fuel efficiency and ease of maintenance, whilst the vessel’s design offers the peace of mind which puts enjoyment and pride back in to boat ownership.
Relaxing Environment – from the large social aft platform with fridge and wet bar, to the luxurious high quality interior, all beautifully appointed with the best quality woods and fabrics. The whole vessel is air conditioned throughout, all areas are spacious enough to allow comfortable, unrestricted use with plentiful storage.
The whole concept of the vessel is one designed for use – either for ocean cruising or gentle trips up canals or rivers. The design is practical, timeless, easily maintained and durable, which along with the excellent seakeeping, will help to maintain the residual value of the craft.
Independent Reviews
- “Now here’s a very interesting development. Coupling jet-drives to big diesels is normally the preserve of military or commercial boat operators. So it takes a lot of nerve to couple a pair of 660hp Cats to Hamilton waterjets and fit them in an 18m patrol boat hull”…. “They provide unmatched manoeuvrability – once you have experienced a jet-drive boat, nothing else comes close”…. “And two of the boat owner’s greatest fears evaporate: running aground and ripping off your sterngear, and inadvertently macerating your friends swimming around the boat. With only 700mm below the water, there’s a whole world of shallow water and waterway cruising to be discovered.” Motor Boat & Yachting – September 2001
- “The Cara Marine launch is one of the finest, if not THE finest, pilot launch currently in the world. Our particular operation demands much from a launch in structural strength, reliability, low maintenance and manoeuvrability. I believe it achieves the highest scores in all these areas.” Captain David Shennan, Harbour Master, Harwich Haven Authority

The latest and greatest yachts under 24 metres
Kate Lardy finds there is a top performer for every purpose in the under 24-metre market...
Otam 58 GTS
A client who asked for “total freedom of expression” is responsible for this new version of Otam’s popular 58 with the Gran Turismo Sport suffix. Named Bad Boys , the 19.2 metre has been restyled by Giuseppe Bagnardi of BG Design Firm with a semi-open deckhouse and more aerodynamic profile. The latter will come in handy when Bad Boys hits 55 knots, thanks to its twin 1,825hp MTUs coupled to ASD14 Arneson surface drives. See her in Cannes in September. otam.it
A new Italian shipyard, Filoyacht, is getting ready to unveil what it’s all about. In July, it launched a stylish 22.6 metre, which it will display at the Cannes and Genoa shows this autumn. Highlights include a foredeck swimming pool, a tender lift aft and fold-down wings that expand the cockpit to almost eight metres wide. Below deck are three guest cabins and separate crew quarters. Two MTUs of 1,630hp each, equipped with Top System surface drives, give a top speed of 46 knots. filoyacht.com
Ferretti Yachts 580
The latest model in Ferretti’s flybridge collection shows how the prolific Italian builder continually improves upon its signature values: comfort, modern luxury and well-being. On the 17.7-metre 580, large expanses of glass and ceiling heights of at least two metres give a sense of spaciousness and wide sea views. The highly customisable model offers two layouts for the lower deck and two decor schemes: warm classic and fresh contemporary. The first hull will launch in October for a debut at Düsseldorf in January 2023. ferretti-yachts.com
Ocean Eco 60 Coupé
This forward-thinking catamaran from ALVA Yachts is available with fully electric drives and comes fuel-cell ready. The new 18.4-metre Coupé version has an expansive coachroof with 80 square metres of solar cells. Battery banks store power from these and the generators, and run two 250kW electric motors, which give a top speed of 20 knots. Named for its transatlantic ability, the catamaran has a 2,800-nautical-mile range. The first is in build for avid divers who appreciate the 230 square metres of interior and exterior living space. alva-yachts.com
Libeccio 13.5 Cabin
A new version of Gozzi Mimì’s 13.5-metre flagship is its most spacious and liveable yet. The Naples shipyard has taken the classic planing gozzo and added heaps of comfort in its accommodation, which comprise three cabins – one double and two with twin berths – and two heads. Yanmar engines, each rated 370hp, give a top speed of 30 knots. The Genoa show in October will be the site of its world premiere. gozzimimi.it
It’s a delightful mix of old and new on Apreamare’s 14.7-metre flagship Gozzo, debuting in Cannes this autumn. The nostalgic design respects tradition, while comfort and performance are as modern as can be. The single-level deck has a walkaround path that encircles a sunbed, cockpit dining for 10 and bow seating, while a cabin below deck sleeps four to six. The variable deadrise deep-V hull accommodates a pair of 600hp Cummins diesels or 650hp Volvo Penta IPS drives, each allowing at least 30 knots of speed. apreamare.it
Nerea Yacht, which burst onto the yachting scene in early 2019 with the stylish NY24, is getting ready to reveal its next chapter at Cannes. Its 12-metre flagship exemplifies its “Made in Italy” ethos with an elegant design by ideaeITALIA that references automotive styling, finished in a superyacht-like herringbone teak and polished stainless steel. The highly customisable model allows prospective buyers to pick the layout, materials, finishes and engine room equipment, including a choice of inboards (gasoline or diesel) or outboards. A nifty feature is the innovative three-step COSMO aft platform, developed with Besenzoni, which lowers into the water or rises above it for diving or reaching the dock. nereayacht.com
wallypower58
This new Wally heralds the future, marking the start of a revamp of the entire range. It translates to pure lines and an enviable entertaining deck that’s open to the surroundings while protecting guests from the elements. Folding bulwarks add 25 square metres to the aft deck, and the lower deck, naturally lit from above, sleeps four for overnighting. The 17.3-metre boat tops out at between 36 and 38 knots, depending on which horsepower Volvo IPS drives are chosen. wally.com
Princess Yachts’ newest F-series yacht is indeed fit for royalty. As the British builder says, it offers “a new standard of refinement, featuring enriched upholstery and timber finishes and inlaid polished stainless steel”. The 17.7-metre flybridge yacht also has updated exterior styling with larger hull windows that brighten the three guest cabins below. Its 33-knot performance is courtesy of twin Volvo D13-900 engines. princessyachts.com
Absolute Yachts’ new 22.8-metre flagship relishes in the space it offers. Big windows and high ceilings characterise the interiors, while the decks – devoid of structural furniture – are versatile open-air lounges fringed by glass parapets for clear sea views. Full walkaround covered side decks are another bonus, as is the owner’s cabin forward on an intermediary deck between main and lower decks. See its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September and at Fort Lauderdale in October. absoluteyachts.com
Squadron 58
There are a few firsts for Fairline in this new 17.7-metre model. Most notable is the builder’s foray into beach club living: the cockpit and aft platform transform into a lounge by the sea with fold-down balconies to port and starboard; there is flexible and modular cockpit seating, and a glass transom for views aft; and there’s also an innovative hi-lo platform that can both hold the tender and double in length for sun loungers. The first hull will splash in November for a January 2023 debut at Düsseldorf. fairline.com
Prestige 690
French yacht company Prestige is adding a sparkle to its brand with a newly inked partnership with Swarovski. Superyacht designers are very familiar with the Austrian brand’s custom lighting elements and speciality wall panels, seen on many of the world’s yachts. Now a limited-edition 21.5-metre Prestige 690 flybridge yacht incorporates subtle and elegant crystal elements in its interior. Custom bejewelled panels, which on larger walls such as in the owner’s cabin, alternate with grey grooved oak and mirrors, enhance guest spaces on both main and lower decks. The goal is to create a sensory experience and a modern luxurious home at sea. prestige-yachts.com
CL Yachts will introduce the newest member of its CLB line at the Newport International Boat Show in September. As the smallest in the line, the 19.7-metre flybridge yacht has been designed for owner-operators, although buyers of the first two hulls opted for the optional crew quarters. Both hulls use twin Volvo Penta IPS1050 pods with docking assist and have at-rest fin stabilisation. The interiors are modern – with lowering windows in the saloon plus a flip-up window in the galley that serves the aft deck. clyachts.com
Daychaser 48
When Barton & Gray Mariners Club needed more boats to satisfy its growing membership, it commissioned 10 custom 14.6-metre boats to be designed by Zurn Yacht Design and built at Boston Boatworks. Dayboating is the focus, and on-deck amenities include an open-air galley, bow lounge and plenty of water toy stowage. bostonboatworks.com ; zurnyachts.com ; bartonandgray.com
Silvercat 40CC
First revealed at the Dubai International Boat Show in March, Gulf Craft’s new 12.2-metre centre console catamaran with a 4.1-metre beam offers a vast and stable platform for fishing or watersports, easily taking 12 on board. A draught of less than 50cm means nowhere is out of reach. Two to four outboards of 300hp to 400hp each provide the power. gulfcraftinc.com
Greenline 58 Fly
The solar roof on this new 18.2-metre flybridge yacht gives a hint that this is something different. Greenline Yachts’ boats uniquely come with a choice of efficient conventional diesel, hybrid or fully electric drives, while solar power runs all appliances on board. Whatever the propulsion choice, the 58 Fly’s layout by Marco Casali is eminently liveable, including a main-deck galley aft conveniently close to the cockpit dining area, and three cabins below deck with the option of a skipper’s cabin. greenlinehybrid.com
At 55 knots, this express boat makes quick work of a jaunt to a secluded bay and, once there, its 90cm draught will come in handy. Legacy Superyachts by the Lazzara family is behind the new boat, conceived initially as a tender to an in-build L-135 yacht. At 21.3 metres, it would be a big tender indeed. The sizeable open beach deck can carry two jet skis or a 4.3-metre tender, and there is direct access to this deck from a lounge on the lower deck, which has quarters for six guests. legacysuperyachts.com
Nordhavn 51
As they say, good things come to those that wait. Nordhavn currently has 23 owners waiting for the 15.5-metre N51 – the first hull of which is on track for an April 2023 launch. The big sister to the very popular N41, which debuted in late 2020, this two-cabin passage-maker adds an extra head and a flybridge. It is being built to CE Category A certification for serious ocean use. nordhavn.com
Trident 650 EVO
Outer Reef Yachts incorporated its clients’ wishes for more volume and comfort into the latest Ward Setzer-designed Trident series model, currently in build. As an evolved version of the Trident 620, the 19.8-metre yacht offers more space in the galley, saloon aft, boat deck, aft deck and flybridge, as well as an extra en suite cabin. Performance-wise, it benefits from Volvo Penta’s second-generation Electronic Vessel Control system, coupled with a conventional transmission and SeaTorque enclosed shaft drive system. outerreefyachts.com

Feadship latest Concept Design celebrates an important milestone
One of the most anticipated moments of the annual Monaco Yacht Show is the unveiling of Feadship’s latest concept design. Much more than a rendering, this 75-metre design showcases innovative technologies within stunning exterior design and forward-looking interior styling. This year, in honour of the 75 th Diamond Anniversary of the brand, Feadship’s Studio De Voogt presents its latest gem, C . The name derives from the symbol for carbon on the periodic table, carbon being the basis of diamonds, and a little play on words see and sea.
Inspired by how a cut diamond’s patterns reflect and magnify light, C sparkles with innovations and dazzles with mesmerizing angles. But more than just generating an unforgettable profile, these facets amid broad expanses of glass draw light deep into the yacht’s interior, turning the centre of circulation for owner and guests into a light-filled gallery and unprecedently fluid living space.
This design also blurs the separation of decks with the fore and aft section of each offset by a half-level, smoothly transitioning to the next lifestyle area be it up or down. Opening the centre of the yacht to an atrium with floating stars and a lift without walls must be seen to be appreciated! It is truly a flash of brilliance.
Other design innovations onboard C are the partially enclosed lower deck sea lounge that can be used at anchor or underway, a beach club with sea-level dining, a duplex owner’s suite and an articulating crow’s nest rising from a private observation deck. A pair of infinity-edge hexagonal pools match the shapes of various seating areas and the atrium.
There’s nothing rough about this diamond in Feadship’s concept collection. Her hull shape and fully electric propulsion system with inline contra rotating propellers – an evolution from the Breathe concept and Feadship Savannah – are predicted in computer simulations to be 30 per cent more efficient than a typical 75-metre yacht with dual shafts, propellers and rudders. The advances made to her underwater profile mean less wake.
As with all Feadship concept yachts, C is completely researched and buildable. Following on the hydrogen fuel cell power generation developed for Feadship’s 118.80-metre Project 821 , concept design C will draw 100 per cent of her power needs from fuel cells directly running on methanol, complimented by lithium-metal batteries. Feadship sees green methanol as the best near-term step in the decarbonization of yachting due to its relatively high density and ease of use. Normal cruising speed on the fuel cells is 14 knots and a top speed of 17 knots can be achieved by adding the battery power to the DC electrical grid. Additional power will be generated passively by two pair of wave-actuated fins that fold out from the hull aft of the anchors. Estimates are that in a one-metre sea energy generated by their movement will meet one-third of C ’s hotel load.
Polishing the remote bridge plan introduced on the 2021 concept design Pure , C showcases the next evolution of Feadship’s adaptive technology with a command centre positioned on the lower deck between the crew area and beach club. This fully digital operation and navigation hub includes the latest in intelligent situational awareness technology with cameras and data fusion. The enabling technology has already found its way into the Feadship fleet onboard Ulysses . Its location is seen as a way to centralise crew tasks and improve communication lines between engineering and navigation crew. This layout and the smaller single-level engine room supported by the fuel cells maximizes prime owner and guest space, creating more value to an owner within the same gross tonnage.
Designers Ruud Bakker and Tanno Weeda will be available during the Monaco Yacht Show to explain the technologies and explore the design via the model and video animation with visitors next to the Feadship hospitality centre. For those unable to attend the show, more details on C will be released soon.
