On board Baglietto's first 40m Fast Jewel superyacht Panam

Beyond the serious and authoritative exterior of Panam lies a playful, inviting interior – as well as some interesting engineering...

Racing across the waves at 31 knots, the full-custom 40.2 metre Baglietto yacht Panam may be built for speed, but she isn’t your average go-fast superyacht. The owner’s brief was for exterior lines that evoked a sense of speed, and with a vertical bow, gunmetal-grey hull and forward-sloping windows, the tri-deck yacht certainly cuts an aggressive line across the water. Yet while edgy aesthetics and high performance were vital to the brief, so too was creating a yacht that would provide the comfort, livability and spaciousness more of a displacement vessel. The owner wanted to have his cake and eat it too, and Baglietto and designer Francesco Paszkowsk i rose to the occasion.

“The owner’s brief was quite challenging,” Carlo Toracca of Baglietto, who served as Panam ’s project manager, admits. “He asked for a sporty performance yacht that maintained the distinctive design elements of the Baglietto tradition, mixed with spacious volumes, modern exterior styling, bespoke design solutions, close contact to the sea, bright and airy interiors and large outdoor and social spaces.”

Panam builds upon Baglietto and Paszkowski’s  long-time partnership of creating high-performance, aluminum planing-hull yachts. In this vein, the yard and designer had experience in spades, but Panam herself represents something new to the Baglietto line-up. Not based on an existing platform, she is a custom project, featuring a brand-new hull form. “Despite our great expertise in boats of this type, this is a full-custom vessel built on a unique and highly challenging platform, which included a vertical bow,” Toracca says.

The square-shaped stern recalls the classic Baglietto styling, no doubt, but to update the exterior lines, this stocky hull merges with a compact profile, trapezoidal windows, and a fierce vertical bow, all of which provide a modern and dynamic look. “The bow features a step near the waterline, which enhances the sporty and aggressive lines,” Paszkowski says.

Combining a sleek exterior with unusual volume for a boat of this size required a series of carefully thought-out choices in terms of materials. One solution was the extensive use of composite materials, with carbon fibre utilised in places such as the hull doors and mast. Other innovations included a swimming pool in fibreglass on the sundeck and the design of a floodable garage that requires no davit to launch and haul the tender.

Transversally fitted aft of the engine room, the tender garage is noteworthy, especially in this size of yacht, and it accommodates a 5.5 metre tender. “It is partially floodable as the lower edge of the garage’s side shell door lies below the waterline,” Toracca explains. “This allows launching and retrieving the tender in a very simple, safe and fast way as the tender itself enters the garage when still floating and is towed inside by a winch and  a balancing cradle.” Baglietto designed the garage so that it can fill with seawater before the shell door opens and immediately drains when the retrieving operation is complete and the door is closed.

Stepping inside Panam , a bright and airy interior is a cheery contrast to the imposing exterior lines and dark exterior paint. The cosy main salon, adorned in neutral-coloured soft furnishings, is well-lit, thanks to full-height windows and glass sliding doors. Close contact with the sea is maintained thanks to transparent bulwarks on the main deck, allowing unfettered views out of the large windows in the main salon and dining room.

Besides the views outside, what immediately grabs your eye is a living vertical garden, with fern-like plants covering a bulkhead that separates the salon and dining area forward. The installation visually divides the space, but it’s placed centrally so it doesn’t cut off the flow of movement on the main deck. “Architectural solutions that divide the spaces without really separating them allow us to create different locations while avoiding narrow spaces,” Paszkowski says. “On board Panam ,  this functional and aesthetic element might be a marble or a wooden wall – or a vertical garden.” Forward of the dining room is a large pantry area and galley.

The interior was created by Paszkowski’s team in collaboration with Margherita Casprini. They met the owner’s brief for a welcoming and elegantly contemporary interior with the use of woods, polished lacquered panels, grey and neutral tones, and onyx and marble embellishments, all of them chosen by the owner, who was very hands-on in the build of his first custom yacht.

Teak on the exterior decks meets sand oak for the interior floor and striped sand oak on the walls.  A processing technique created a special wave effect in the oak used for the wall of the main deck lobby, which has a varnished metal sheet on the ceiling amplifying a 3D effect, and the owner’s stateroom.

The interior is further detailed in leather, glass and white backlit onyx, used to great effect on the main salon walls on either side of the living-garden wall. The wide selection of marbles includes glossy Persian Gray marble for the shower of the owner’s stateroom and Calacatta for the flooring, while Marfil Cream marble, Eramosa and Coffee Brown marble decorate the lower-deck guest cabins, VIP bathrooms and the dayhead.

The interior living areas take full advantage of the yacht’s nearly 28ft beam, meeting the owner’s request for spacious living in a high-performance yacht. It’s especially noticeable in the forward owner’s stateroom and bath, both stretching across the full beam. A dog-leg wall separates the owner’s office from the suite, ensuring privacy. Another nice feature here is that you can open the windows to allow the fresh sea air to flow through.

In all, following the owner’s wish to stay connected to his environment, the design enhances contact with the sea with open-air areas that include an expansive flybridge, a beach club and the aft section of the main deck. The latter features a custom-made table, planters for live plants and an aft-facing sunpad that might typically be seen on a smaller go-fast boat, evoking Panam ’s speedy nature. Top-of-the-line speakers are hidden in the outdoor spaces, even inside the flagpole.

The flybridge, around 861 square feet in area, is a party deck with multiple lounge areas, a custom-made counter-current pool holding seven tons of water, with a television screen built into its back wall. It has a bar,  a custom marble structure with a sliding countertop, designed as a flexible, space-saving solution. Paszkowski explains this clever feature: “By sliding, the top provides a shelf for people sitting on the stools and reveals the working area for the waiter on the opposite side.  The top also hides a console for the DJ on one side.”

The bridge itself is situated at the mezzanine level,  just a few steps down, and assisting the captain in docking maneuvers are two wing stations.

Much like with the main deck bulwarks, transparent protection rims the outer perimeter of the flybridge and the pool to connect the space with the water beyond. Other open-air areas of note include a lofty bow lounge – which Paszkowski says is his “favourite place among the al fresco spaces we designed” – and the beach club, which opens on three sides with two side-folding balconies in carbon fibre. “It is an excellent solution to provide another huge social area close to the water and to enhance the contact to the sea according to the owner’s wish of enjoying the surrounding environment while living on board,” the designer says. When the stern platform and side balconies are open, the total beach club area is 459 square feet.

This layout demanded innovative thinking and engineering. The central engine room was moved forward to make room for the large beach club and the semi-floodable garage. Although a triple-waterjet propulsion system made it easier to control noise and vibrations, Panam ’s layout necessitated shaft lines that are 27.7 metre long from the transom to the gearbox flange.

“Building Panam has been a very challenging project for Baglietto, in both the design and technical aspects, but the final result has made everybody at the shipyard very proud,” Toracca says. “The owner was very happy and excited as well. Being a full-custom project, Panam is the realisation of his yachting dreams.”

Hey guys, Tony Smith with Denison Yachting, and today we’re on the Baglietto PANAM . This is a 40-meter boat. We’re just exploring it in real-time. Beautiful boat here at the Cannes Yacht Festival. Some great things about Baglietto – they’re an Italian shipyard, any of their yachts are all custom-built to the owner’s specifications.

So when we come in here [Salon], a few things that we notice right away are the huge windows. It does have a nice cut-out here. So, you get an infinity view when you’re out on the ocean. Obviously, a nice area here in the main salon, and then you get this huge fold-up fold-down TV. So pretty cool. I also want to mention that all the vegetation and plants on the boat, are real. It’s also stabilized. So it’ll live for a couple years, you just have to dust it.

So moving forward, here we’ve got the great dining area. Looks like this table is set up to fit 10. Here’s a full model of the PANAM as she lays. Really cool-looking boat. Very interesting chandelier there. And again we get the infinity view of the whole way.

Moving forward, we’re going to head up to the master. This master is configured with actually two different staterooms in it. One is configured for the owner’s daughter and then we’re going to see the main master here. Moving forward into the master, what you’re going to see is on the port side, they’ve got plenty of storage here and it’s an asymmetrical design.

On the starboard side, we have our bed. You’ve got a large hull side window, storage down below as well as a desk. And a really cool feature on the boat is the integrated TV that almost seems like it’s part of the structure of the boat itself.

Moving forward into the ensuite bathroom you see on the port side I’ve got a really cool rain shower there. I’ve got two sink basins. And then over on the starboard side, we have the toilet and bidet. So really nice elegant design here for our ensuite head.

Exiting the master there’s one other feature I got to point out. On the hull side windows, these are actually articulate and they lift up. So the boat can completely open up and you get a fresh breeze through here.

Let’s go ahead and see the rest of the boat. Next, we’re going to check out the guest staterooms. So we’re going to head down this companionway. Coming down these stairs, we’re going to enter the guest staterooms and what you see in the aft, we have mirrored staterooms here. Each stateroom has its own ensuite bathroom, as well as these, are really nice athwartship bunks. I’ve got some bright hull side windows here and integrated built-in TV. Nicely finished out vessel and then again dedicated ensuite head with a separate infinity rain shower, really nice design, feels very rugged.

Moving forward down the hallway, we’ve got two more cabins here. These both have two single beds and they’re mirrored on the port and starboard. Again, they have an ensuite head, rain shower as well as a bidet. Last feature I want to point out down here is this mirror is actually a hidden door. So behind here, I’ve got complete laundry and access to the crew part of the ship. So we’ve got crew quarters, crew mess, and all that connects up to the pantry on the port side as well. Closing this door here we’re going to head up through the spiral staircase to the main part of the boat.

Before we check out the exterior of the boat, I want to take you through on the port side here. This leads through the pantry area and then up through a spiral staircase, up to the captain’s helm. So in the port side, I’m going to move up and I’ve got a really convenient little pantry area. Over towards the centerline of the ship, I’ve got all my glassware, outboard I’ve got a coffee station and service, watertight door to the exterior of the boat, and then we’re going to skip over the helm section and take a look at the mini galley over on the port side. On the forward side of the galley, we have access to our wine storage as well as access down to the crew quarters.

Exiting the mini galley I’m going to head up to the wheelhouse and check out the captain’s helm. So moving up to the very impressive helm station. You’ll see a lot of automotive-inspired. There’s literally carbon fiber all over this boat. Super cool. And this is a jet-powered boat. It has three 2000 kilowatt water jets on it. So you have your two primaries that you use to steer the boat as well as a booster jet to really make this boat go fast.

And if you’re not fortunate enough to be the captain of this boat you can still enjoy the view from this lovely carbon fiber table. So as we exit the wheelhouse, you’ll notice we’ve got full ship systems here as well as push-button controls.

Walking out onto the upper deck, I am blown away. This thing is party central. In the center of this boat, it has a custom DJ center. So the DJ can set up right here, we’ve got speakers all throughout both sides, we’ve got daybeds and movable furniture.

Moving towards the aft, you’ll see what I mean with these beautiful built-in daybeds here and then movable furniture. Up on top, I’ve got more carbon fiber influences on the boat and there are two really nice openings and glass up above. Just aft of the hardtop, the party continues with the integrated TV supported by carbon fiber mounts and a huge infinity swimming pool. This pool is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It’s motorized and it gives you a current so you can swim continuously and get a workout in when the party takes a break.

The last part of the sundeck that I want to show you is this huge daybed as well as my flagpole that has integrated speakers as well. Being in this area is super relaxing. The daybeds are aft-facing and I’ve got glass that surrounds it so I have an infinity view.

Moving forward on the port side, we’re going to check out the forward deck. Moving forward, I’ve got a really incredible area up here. There’s just some wonderful teak, you can see into the helm area and it has another daybed. Forward to that, there’s a crane that lifts in the water toys. Something that really stands out to me is this carbon fiber and detail put into the lifelines, it’s a really robust masculine boat. The bow on this boat has two completely different areas that have a totally separate feeling. We have the sunbed up top but down below here, this is really where the functional mechanical space is. We’ve got a tender here with the davit and jetski. Forward to that, I’ve got two large windlasses and all of the anchor gear for the boat. Leaving the bow of the boat, we’re going to head back and check out the swim platform.

Normally your aft deck and swim platform are connected but on this boat, it’s entirely different. Here I’ve got a lovely daybed some fire and then stairs down to the beach club. Now, this is a really impressive area, I love this. The entire transom folds up but it’s folded down into the beach club configuration. I’ve got stairs that lead straight into the ocean, my sea bobs, and then in here is a completely separate beach club with exercise equipment and a lounge area.

We don’t have a lot of drone footage on this boat but I want to reinforce, this thing is a superyacht. At 40 meters, she has so much space on board. I’m really blown away. In addition to the transom that opens up on either side, we have carbon fiber doors that fold down into the water. So you can have a full breeze through this area and this boat is super connected with the ocean.

Leaving the beach club we’re going to walk back upstairs and check out the aft deck. Stepping back up onto the main deck, a few features that I want to point out here is the large sun pad in the back. On both sides, I’ve got a fire system as well as a nice opening, so I can get an infinity view out into the ocean. The dining table is probably sufficient for 12 guests or more.

A couple of other features I want to point out two main things is these huge doors here, they’re hydraulic and push-button actuated. Another thing that I want to point out is directly here I’ve got an access door. So there’s three ways to get down to the mechanical space, either from the main salon here from the port deck or via the beach club.

So coming down this companionway, we’re going to have access directly to the engine room. Down here in the engine room I’ve got 3 MTUs. Now again, these are hydro-jet propulsion 2000 kilowatts per motor. So we’ve got primaries on the port and starboard and then a booster motor in the middle. The big upside to this type of propulsion is we’ve got a cruise speed of around 25 knots and amazingly a top speed of 31-knots on a 40-meter boat.

Tra Port Canto e Port Vieux è stato un bel vedere sin dal primo giorno. Del resto a Cannes, nel magnifico scenario della Croisette, nel cuore della Costa Azzurra, è sempre così. Ma tra le tante proposte di barche di tutti i tipi, dal più piccolo gommone al più grande yacht di lusso, c’è sempre qualcosa di speciale da scoprire, capace di distinguersi, che sia per lo stile o per le prestazioni, per le qualità marine o per gli allestimenti, la motorizzazione o le prestazioni…

E’ in questo ampio e ricchissimo ambito che il Made in Italy della grande nautica ha recitato una volta di più, nel salone francese, un ruolo da protagonista assoluto, con alcuni dei marchi più prestigiosi, come i vari Azimut-Benetti, Ferretti Group (Ferretti Yacht, Pershing, Riva, Itama, Custom Line, CRN, Wally), Sanlorenzo (con Bluegame e Swan) di cui abbiamo dato ampie informazioni su questo sito.

Ma si è distinto, in questo scenario da sogno, anche Benetti, cantiere con sedi a La Spezia e a Carrara, specializzato nella costruzione di nuove imbarcazioni plananti in alluminio da 38 a 50 metri e megayacht dislocanti e semidislocanti dai 40 metri in acciaio e alluminio.

Si chiama Attitude DOM 133 il capolavoro esibito a Cannes dallo storico cantiere ligure (la data di nascita risale nientemeno che al 1841, a Varazze). E’ uno yacht con scafo in alluminio di 41 metri caratterizzato da linee accattivanti, capaci di esaltare classicità e modernità, con volumi interni molto generosi, grazie ad una larghezza di 8,70 metri e a soluzioni abitative non usuali, che non trovano competitor sul mercato.

E’ adatto anche a navigazioni transoceaniche, ma il pescaggio ridotto (2,15 metri) e il disegno stesso della carena rendono l’imbarcazione adatta anche a navigazioni in acque poco profonde, rigorosamente in regime dislocante. La motorizzazione è affidata a due Caterpillar C32 che consentono di raggiungere una velocità non superiore a 17 nodi.

Il progetto porta due firme : una, relativa agli esterni, è quella di Stefano Vafiadis, figlio d’arte (il padre Giorgio è il fondatore dello studio di design con sede a Roma), l’altra, relativa agli interni, è quella di Ezequiel Farca, designer messicano con studi a città del Messico ma anche a Los Angeles e Milano. Il risultato della collaborazione è uno yacht estremamente versatile, capace di unire eleganza e funzionalità, vivibilità e stile.

Più in dettaglio, il layout dell’imbarcazione si snoda in un armonico flusso tra aree interne ed esterne volte a valorizzare quanto più possibile l’atmosfera conviviale. Il salone principale, ad esempio, è caratterizzato da finestre panoramiche apribili a tutta altezza che lo rendono una naturale estensione del beach club concepito su due livelli, con piscina a sfioro con fondo sollevabile, ormai un marchio di fabbrica per le imbarcazioni Baglietto di ultima generazione.

Spazio ideale per godersi il mare, il pozzetto di poppa diventa quindi anche una piacevole area “al fresco” da godere anche con la barca ormeggiata in porto. Sentirsi come a casa, in armonia con l’ambiente circostante, infatti, è stato il motivo d’ispirazione principale sia per gli esterni che per la definizione degli interni. In casa Baglietto, in proposito, spiegano che “le ampie vetrate a tutta altezza rimandano alla moderna architettura delle ville californiane” e aggiungono che gli interni sono stati definiti con il contributo dell’arredatore francese Stephane Parmentier.

Ma le collaborazioni di specialisti provenienti da vari ambiti non necessariamente legati alla nautica sono anche altre. Non manca, ad esempio, una zona conversazione con divani firmati Minotti e poltrone in pelle Flexform. Un mobile basso separa l’area lounge dalla sala da pranzo con ampio tavolo in marmo per 10 persone (sempre a firma Minotti) e lampadario centrale espressamente prodotto da Viabizzuno, azienda leader nel settore dell’illuminazione. Alle spalle, una imponente parete in metallo e vetro è firmata invece da Sophie Mallebranche, artista e designer tessile francese nota per i suoi materiali metallici intrecciati che mescolano fibre e materiali industriali.

Procedendo verso prua , a centro barca trova posto la cucina professionale con dispensa annessa, mentre dal foyer a dritta si accede alla suite armatoriale che include ufficio, cabina-armadio, zona relax e bagno con doccia centrale. In questo ambiente, rischiarato dalla luce naturale che entra dalle ampie finestrature, colori chiari di moquette e pareti giocano in contrasto con la testata del letto in pelle marrone ed il parquet scuro.

La scala centrale in pelle conduce alla zona ospiti del ponte inferiore dove trovano posto 2 cabine VIP e due con letti singoli. Più a prua, in questa stessa zona, con accesso separato, è situata la zona equipaggio che conta di 4 cabine doppie e lavanderia.

Al ponte superiore si accede sia dalla scala centrale interna che da una scala “galleggiante” esterna in vetro e teak con dettagli in acciaio. Anche questo ponte è concepito come spazio unico, una veranda in perfetto equilibrio tra dentro e fuori. La finestratura centrale completamente apribile crea uno spazio continuo, reso evidente anche dal pavimento in teak utilizzato all’interno. Anche questo ponte è concepito per un utilizzo versatile: lo sky lounge, infatti, offre una zona conversazione con grande tv nascosta da vetro riflettente che ne amplifica l’effetto di continuità, e tavolo da gioco, mentre all’esterno trova posto la zona pranzo.

A prua la timoneria in pelle è dotata delle più moderne strumentazioni di bordo. Di fronte, su questo stesso ponte, è situato un ulteriore spazio living privato con divani e zona prendisole.

Il ponte sole lascia ampio spazio al design che si esprime in ogni scelta di arredo dalle linee pulite e minimali. Il mobile bar centrale e quello a bordo piscina giocano su rimandi geometrici in legno e pietra che ben si armonizzano con il tavolo da pranzo e la zona conversazione a poppa, creando uno spazio ideale per la vita all’aria aperta. Il garage a poppa della sala macchine è capace di ospitare un tender di 5.7 metri mentre un altro tender è posizionato a prua.
