Larendael introduces the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

dutch superyacht tech campus in amsterdam

Larendael has announced the launch of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, an innovative location for the construction, refit, and maintenance of superyachts. Following the acquisition of the historic 53 ha shipyard located in the western port area of Amsterdam in August 2021 , Larendael has unveiled their plans to develop a Campus that can host several superyachts, up to 200 meters in length, for design, production, maintenance, and refits at the lauded site. Unique to this Campus will be its ability to provide the space required for the manifold stages of superyacht production from design to completion, the quantity of superyachts that can be accommodated, and an exceptional environment for both training and education.

Innovation is the essence of the company’s vision in every aspect of the Campus’s design. Their facilities are thoughtfully arranged and stream-lined to conveniently stimulate collaboration at all phases of design and construction. The Campus will provide a leading edge, open environment where students, professionals, and visitors alike can view and participate in the creation of these exquisite yachts. Additionally, we are committed to seeking opportunities to benefit from alternative fuels for a more sustainable process of manufacturing and ship building materials, preserving our Campus as a leader now and into the future for superyacht production.

The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus is easily accessible for superyachts via the North Sea Canal. A total of seven covered docks will be built, four large docks with a length of up to 200 metres and three large docks with a length of up to 155 metres. These dry docks will also be used for refits and maintenance of existing superyachts. A yacht lift will be available for yachts up to 80 metres, allowing maintenance to be carried out ashore. Outside, there will be room for mooring 40 superyachts up to 200 metres long, with a water depth of up to 13 metres.

Wim Beelen, Creative Founder of Larendael: “With the development of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are investing in the future of shipping in a place with a rich history; the location where the former leading shipyard, the Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (ADM), was active in the 18th and 19th century”.

Wim Beelen , Creative Founder: In 2020, Wim Beelen sold the company he founded, Beelen, a sustainable contractor in the demolition sector, recycler of construction and demolition residues and processor of industrial waste. He changed course and started Larendael. The development of the sustainable last mile concept, the first multi-story xxl logistics city hub, in Amsterdam brought him back to the water. A place where he also likes to spend his free time, because water makes the world a lot bigger. At Larendael, he wants to stimulate and use the open-mindedness of the young generation. In addition, he wants to be primarily occupied with things that give him energy. Building projects from the ground up and making them into something beautiful and unique.

Larendael concludes: “With the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus we create an environment where craftsmanship, innovation and sustainability can flourish. By offering economies of scale at a location that is accessible without restrictions – both by water and by land – we uniquely provide yacht builders and suppliers a place for the expansion and enrichment of the Dutch competitive position in the superyacht industry, not only in size but also in quality”.

Start of construction of Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

Currently, huge sheet pile walls are being installed in the North Sea Canal, near the location where the campus is rising, so that quays can be built. 'Hopefully we will be able to receive the first yachts soon,' says Wim Beelen.

The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus will be located in the area where the leading shipyard, the Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij used to operate. Excavation, reclamation and preparation for construction of this 66-hectare site already started last year.

Yacht design and construction

In the near future, the huge maritime complex should be ready and accommodate all possible parties involved in the yacht building industry. Yachts up to a length of 200 meters can be designed and built there. Refits and maintenance operations will also be carried out there.

The complex is in a strategic location in the Port of Amsterdam. The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus is easily accessible for yachts via the North Sea Canal, as well as for road traffic.

"The campus provides employment and training places for a lot of people. The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus comes at a good time, Wim Beelen believes. The demand for yacht building has risen considerably in recent years. 'The Netherlands is among the world's top yacht builders. The arrival of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus can further strengthen this position and grow employment in this sector.'

Larendael to Build 53-Hectare Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus

By Jenna Mehdi

Dutch investment firm Larendael has announced plans to build a ‘Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus’ on its recently acquired 53-hectare shipyard in the western port area of Amsterdam. The Campus will host 40 superyachts up to 200m / 656ft in length for design, production, maintenance and refits.

Lauded for its ability to provide the optimum space required for the various stages of superyacht build, the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus will be built on the site of the former ADM shipyard - a leading Dutch shipyard active in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Campus is built around an ‘energy neutral’ goal, incorporating all construction facilities on site and all campus transportation done on bicycles and electric buggies. Boasting high-tech facilities such as a ‘multidisciplinary Experience Center’ , which offers visitors the superyacht lifestyle experience and introduces them to current industry trends, crew will also be catered to with relaxation facilities and luxury accommodation. The Campus will also be equipped with ‘R&D units and innovation labs’ in the aim of providing an environment for tech companies and think tanks to ‘come up with groundbreaking innovations for the yacht building industry’.

Ideally located for superyachts accessing via the North Sea, the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus will be built in phases; the first phase, involving preparation of the ground for construction, will begin in December 2021. Construction of quays and piers will begin in April 2022, with the final phase, construction of the Campus structures, commencing in December 2022.

"With the development of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus, we are investing in the future of shipping in a place with a rich history." Wim Beelen, Creative Founder of Larendael

Dutch businessman starts building vast superyacht hub in Amsterdam

By Robert Wielaard

dutch superyacht tech campus in amsterdam

AMSTERDAM – Construction has begun on a large superyacht hub in the Port of Amsterdam. The “Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus” will be the largest superyacht facility in the Netherlands when it is due to open in 2026.

dutch superyacht tech campus in amsterdam

The project is the brainchild of Wim Beelen, a businessman who made his fortune in the salvaging industry. In August 2021, his Larendael investment vehicle acquired 53 acres of land and private water in the Port of Amsterdam “to develop something unique.”

It said the location – a rundown port area – would be turned into a ‘Superyacht Campus’ boasting half a dozen covered docks for superyachts of up to 200m (656ft) in length. Also, there will be a lift for yachts up to 80m (263ft). In all, the site is to offer deep-water space for 40 superyachts.

“Currently, huge sheet pile walls are being installed …  near the location where the campus is rising so quays can be built,” Wim Beelen said in mid-March 2023. “Hopefully, we will be able to receive the first yachts soon.”

Lured by the Dutch superyacht sector’s health, size and quality, Beelen has unfolded an ambitious vision for his Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus. He sees the Dutch sector building ever larger. The largest to date is the 127m Koru that Oceanco expects to deliver this year to Amazon owner Jeff Bezos.

dutch superyacht tech campus in amsterdam

The complex is strategically located on a deep-water canal linking the Port of Amsterdam to the North Sea, 18.6 mi (30 km) away.

“The Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus,” says Beelen, “provides employment and training places for a lot of people. The demand for yacht building has risen considerably in recent years. The Netherlands is among the world’s top yacht builders. The arrival of the Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus can further strengthen this position and grow employment in this sector.”

Beelen’s timing looks right. There are a dozen shipyards in the Netherlands that make highly customized superyachts. But as these get longer, most toil in increasingly cramped facilities.

Beelen is a disrupter who exploits waterfront development opportunities. In 2021, after buying a chunk of the Port of Amsterdam,  the latter sued him, saying his development plan violated port rules. However, in June 2022, an appeals court vacated that finding. It said the port illegally claimed rights to waters it does not own.

Beelen expects his superyacht facility to be operational in 2026. It will be available to all comers who want to build, maintain or refit a superyacht of any length. It will also be a campus offering training facilities.
