Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

SA: Mainsail 33m2/355 sq.ft. Genoa 25m2/269 sq.ft. Asymmetric spinnaker 95m2/1023 sq.ft. Symmetric spinnaker 85m2/915 sq.ft.

Review of JPK 1010

Basic specs..

The boat is equipped with 80.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

Unknown keel type

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.98 - 2.08 meter (6.50 - 6.80 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for JPK 1010 is 2.19, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for JPK 1010 is about 198 kg/cm, alternatively 1114 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 198 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1114 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 20.87

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 35m 2 (376 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Portrait of a building site / JPK Composites, high performance sailboats born from a fertile architect-builder duo

jpk 1010 sailboat

For 20 years, JPK Composites has been building fast, easy-to-handle sailboats for cruising and racing. Here's a look back at the history and development of this Breton shipyard, born of a successful blend of construction know-how and naval design talent.

Maxime Leriche

From funboard shape to cruising racing monohull

Un funboard JPK

Launched in 1992, JPK Composites was originally a specialist in the manufacture of high-end epoxy sandwich funboards. Founder Jean-Pierre Kelbert drew on his experience as a top-level racer to supply windsurfers during the golden age of funboarding. His knowledge of advanced composites also enables him to build specific parts for ocean racing.

But in the early 2000s, many board manufacturers were relocating their production to Asia to improve profitability. JPK Composites had to reinvent itself, and decided to start producing cruising racing yachts capable of competing on the IRC circuit.

As part of this project, Jean-Pierre Kelbert met Jacques Valer, a merchant navy officer converted to naval architecture .

Le JPK 960

The pair were on the same wavelength, so much so that in 2003, the shipyard launched the JPK 960, a multi-purpose cruising yacht equally at home around three buoys and in offshore races.

Commercial success in a niche market

Le JPK 110

The success of the JPK 960 gives the young shipyard a good reputation. The Kelbert-Valer duo launched the JPK 110, with promising performance, but which suffered a heavy penalty imposed by the IRC rules.

Le JPK 998

JPK then presents the JPK 998, which competed for the Tour de France à la Voile tender as a replacement for the Mumm 30. Despite outperforming its rivals, the JPK 998 was sidelined in favor of the M34, which went on to enjoy a highly contested career.

Le JPK 1010

The launch of the JPK 1010 in 2010, future winner of four editions of the Transquadra , a top-level amateur transatlantic race, and the Fastnet 2013, will confirm the success of the builder-architect tandem.

Expanding into fast cruising without abandoning our racing DNA

Le JPK 38FC

In 2012, the shipyard demonstrated the versatility of its production by launching the JPK 38 FC, for Fast Cruising. With this model, dedicated to fast cruising, the Breton shipyard demonstrates its know-how by adapting smart, comfortable layouts to a high-performance hull.

Les aménagements intérieurs du JPK 38FC

2014 will see the arrival of the JPK 1080, which will once again shake up the IRC circuit. Built for offshore racing, it will win the Transquadra , the Fastnet and the legendary Sydney Hobart.

The 2019 release of the JPK 1030 marks a turning point in design, with a boat typified for double-handed or single-handed ocean racing.

A range of 4 sailboats...and soon a motorboat

In 2023, the shipyard will offer 4 sailboat models:

Le JPK 1180

  • the JPK 1030 and 1180 are dedicated to a regatta or offshore racing program. Racy and powerful, these two models will soon be joined by the 1085, currently under development.

Le JPK 45FC © François Van Malleghem

  • the JPK 39 FC and 45FC retain the DNA of a fast, powerful sailboat , but with features designed for ocean cruising.

Le Nomad 40

In 2023, this range of sailing yachts will be completed by the launch of the shipyard's first motor yacht, the Nomad 40. Dedicated to coastal cruising and built to the same high quality as the shipyard's sailing yachts , it will be equipped with a small engine to enhance its autonomy.

Recognized expertise in infusion

On a JPK, the hull is infused at the same time as the ribs, to ensure a highly rigid one-piece structure. The shipyard's expertise in infusion is recognized throughout the industry. All stages of production are carried out in-house by a team of enthusiasts, most of whom are sailors.

La préparation avant infusion

Each unit is made to order, to guarantee the future owner an optimum level of personalization.

The site in figures

L'équipe du chantier JPK

Since its creation, JPK Composites has launched nearly 250 units. Based at Larmor-Plage in Morbihan, the yard employs around 50 people, and has generated sales of 5.2 million euros in 2021.

The production facility occupies a surface area of 4,000 m2, and produces around twenty units each year.

jpk 1010 sailboat

All the optimisations carried out on the JPK 1010 have made it possible to progress each year to achieve the perfect season in 2013:  SNIM, spi Ouest France, Giraglia, Tour of the Isle of Wight, Cowes Week, Atlantic Trophy double, RORC Championship, Atlantic Duo and in climax a historic double in the Fastnet won by the tandem Alexis and Pascal Loison.

The JPK 10.80 takes full advantage of all the developments made on the 1010. Jacques Valer, our architect, called the "magician", did not forget any detail of the project to realize a perfectly balanced and optimized "machine" able to win in IRC 2 in all the race formats and whatever the crew configuration.

Loyal to the "spirit of the IRC rule" the boat nevertheless retains a degree of finish and interior equipment consistent with a boat of this size.  Unbeatable in racing, bright and stylish on deck and inside, the 10.80 represents the best of our know-how, from a team of technicians and passionate sailors.

jpk 1080

Racing machine

A few months after its launch, the boat has already shown great potential.  True to his "magic" style of drawing, Jacques Valer has once again succeeded in  the challenge of an extremely competitive hull with a smooth and forgiving behavior  and impressive stability.

Results inshore or offshore  are the best proof of this.

The 10.80 benefits from the optimisation work carried out on the 1010 with a design that is accurate in terms of performance but tolerant and reliable in terms of sea keeping. It is a "light" and lively IRC that performs well for its size.

The hull is especially optimised to combine high power for performance in breezes and low drag for speed in light airs and open wind performance.

The deck layout has been designed for efficiency and comfort, with a very well designed steering position (coamings angled forward).

All the fittings are designed for maximum efficiency and versatility between full crew and single/double crew operation.

Tired of getting sprayed and stupidly chilled on watch, we designed a sliding bubble to protect the companionway.

Sitting on the companionway, it offers a perfect watch from the wind and spray with a translucent panel to check the sails and the course. In strong winds, upwind, it perfectly protects the descent from the spray and secures the instruments on the chart table.

When the conditions are right again, you slide it forward and the companionway is back to normal. On crewed inshore races, it can be dismantled in 2 minutes and the genoa inhaulers can be swapped in the middle.

Similarly, the floors are covered with a translucent anti-slip material and the handrails are placed at the "natural" gripping points.

Inside, everything has been thought out for the quality of life while sailing.

The open roof allows you to rest on the port and starboard side with a panoramic view of the outside. Combined with the frame bunks for stacking or sleeping for the crew during the race and a "wet" area for storing sails and gear, the concept responds to the pleasure of cruising by its simplicity, its modernity and its clarity.

JPK 1030 test: The intuitive French flier that’s easy for couples to control

Pip Hare

  • August 15, 2019

Pip Hare feels right at home on the JPK 1030 – a quick, no-nonsense boat that’s ideal for short-handers

Product Overview

Manufacturer:, price as reviewed:.

You know the feeling when you meet an old friend and just pick up where you left off – there is no small talk, the conversation flows and you get straight into discussing the meaningful things in life? Sailing the JPK 1030 was just like that.

It felt incredibly familiar: every rope and every footrest was where I expected it to be. There was no need for a warm up, we just stepped aboard, the water ballast went in, the main traveller went up and we were on the pace without a second thought.

This freshly launched model from the Lorient-based boatbuilders is set to replace the successful JPK 1010 and had been afloat for just ten days at the time of my test.

JPK-1030-boat-test-aft-running-shot-credit-jean-marie-liot

There is plenty of space for crew to sit behind the helming position and the mainsail can be trimmed from there, allowing an uninterrupted view for the helmsman

At first glance you can see the 1030 is squarely focussed at the short-handed sailing audience. The hull is powerful, with high topsides, a full-length chine and a full but not radical bow. The cockpit has a clear, functional layout, with minimal seating so crew would be forced to sit either on the rail or behind the helm.

The boat is straightforward and simple but that simplicity demonstrates a wealth of design knowledge and experience of what the short-handed sailor needs. Following a quick tour of the boat, we set sail and allowed the JPK 1030 to speak for itself.

King of trim

Helming the 1030 upwind was easy and fun. In 18 knots of true wind we carried a full mainsail and a J2, using the 300 litres of water ballast. The helm was light and the boat easy to control in gusts. Filling the water ballast gave a significant boost to performance – we heeled less, picked up speed and the boat became less twitchy in the gusts.

European Yacht of the Year 2019: Special yachts

This category assembles a varying mix of interesting craft, many of which we might otherwise not have had the chance…

The single backstay proved a powerful tool for trimming the test boat’s carbon mast and I sat happily playing both backstay and traveller while steering to maximise our upwind potential. JPK has opted to keep the head of the mainsail small enough to pass through a single backstay, helped by a good length mast crane on the carbon Axxon rig projecting the stay further back in the boat.

The tiller is mounted forward in the cockpit and two large carbon footrests sit convivially next to each other to allow a second sailor to sit behind the helm. This makes it more comfortable for crew to keep weight aft when the spinnaker is up and also gives the helm an uninterrupted view of oncoming conditions, even when the main is being trimmed. For a yacht this size, trimming the main from behind the helming position makes a lot of sense.

All controls, mainsheet, traveller and backstay are easily accessed from either seated position without interrupting each other. Despite lumpy conditions the steering position remained dry, however there would be no protection from oncoming waves in a big sea – during these times it would be important to strike the right balance between staying dry(ish) and hand-steering the boat.

JPK-1030-boat-test-pip-hare-helm-credit-jean-marie-liot

Tiller is mounted forward in the cockpit. Large carbon footrests allow helmsman and crew to maintain a secure, comfortable seating position

With the autopilot on, an on-watch skipper could sit behind the coachroof on one of the small seats and afford at least some shelter from the elements.

The water ballast on the JPK 1030 uses a no-nonsense system, employing a central scoop, with large diameter transfer pipe, and gate valves which can be operated from the cockpit. Filling takes two minutes, and transferring a matter of seconds. This is easy-to-use ballast at its best – simple and effective.

Upwind speed was impressive and the groove easy to find. We quickly accelerated to over seven knots and even with the ballast on the wrong side of the boat before a tack the helm remained easy to handle.

Tacking itself is a swift procedure on the JPK 1030 – the helmsman eases the mainsheet a touch, while the crew lifts the two gate valves in the cockpit floor to allow the water ballast to drop down to leeward. As soon as the leeward overflow pipe spits, tack the boat, helmsman passing over the back of the tiller, crew taking all the room forward. Out of the tack with the water ballast on the new windward side the boat is powered up quickly.

The jib is controlled using a transverse genoa track and separate inhaulers

Aft of the main traveller, a large top-opening lazarette gives roomy access to the tops of the rudders and the autopilot rams – great for troubleshooting. The test boat also had a rope system that allows the adjustment of rudder toe from on deck – a neat feature, which is managed on other twin rudder boats by sailors crawling into small spaces at the transom and winding on bottlescrews.

Adjusting the alignment of twin rudders is a racing essential which may not seem important to the cruising sailor, but bringing this adjustment onto the deck is a clever move for gaining that extra half a knot of speed.

Off the breeze the JPK 1030 is like poetry. The asymmetric spinnaker flies from a retractable bowsprit, which adds another half a metre onto the boat when extended. There is plenty of power in this little boat. We were able to catch and stay on waves, prolonging surfing time with the helm responding to every tiny twitch.

Even when reaching under spinnaker, I felt fully in control of the boat. When the tiller did load up, an ease of the kicker had us back on our feet again and flying down the waves. We recorded a top speed of 13.8 knots, which is impressive for a 33-footer.

There is plenty of room for crew to sit behind the helm downwind to keep the bow up. The spinnaker sheets cross the cockpit to a winch just in front of the helming position and can be easily trimmed while driving. Inside gybing even in 20 plus knots of breeze was smooth.

The traveller comes up to windward, you surf down a wave, gybe the spinnaker – there is plenty of room between the forestay and the spinnaker luff to pull the sail through – then once the kite is full on the new side, pick another wave and flip the mainsail over.

Symmetrical sense

Below decks the JPK 1030 is smooth and functional. There are no frills but it is nicely built and, due to the lack of forward bulkhead, the interior feels roomy. The bow contains a double berth and there is provision to put a further double in the port aft cabin with the heads and a pilot berth to starboard. As our test boat was fitted with water ballast, the two aft cabins each contained single pilot berths.

The most notable feature of the interior is the dual navigators’ stations, with ergonomic U-shaped seats on each side of the boat. The main nav station was to starboard, however a second screen was fitted over the galley on the port side, with the fridge lid providing a flat surface, which would suffice as a desk.

This allows monitoring of navigation from a comfortable position on either side of the boat and made me reflect a little on how sensible it is to have two positions from which the boat’s progress, AIS or radar can be monitored below decks.

There is a smooth sophistication about the JPK 1030 – it is well-designed, well-built and demonstrates a deep understanding of the needs of a short-handed sailor. The boat is fun to sail but it’s also serious and I have no doubt this boat will be in demand on the double-handed circuit. It is more expensive than the competition in this field and it’s not going to be easy to get your hands on a new one; the current lead-time for a new boat is 14 to 16 months. Is the long wait and the extra cost worth it? To me it is; the value of a well-thought-out, easy-to-use boat for short-handed sailing makes for a more pleasant sailing experience, with less mistakes and the ability to keep on going for longer.
