The new Topcat K2X is our fastest catamaran and the most exciting sail for advanced sailors. The German built K2X has a similar rig to the Getaway with wings and a boom-less main and the addition of light and sleek hulls, and extra sail area. Recent sailing experience required. Main and jib. Crews 2-4.

First hr $105
Additional hr $75

The Getaway is best for experienced sailors who want an exciting sail. It’s super fun to sit out on the wings, but that does make it a more acrobatic sail, as you have to crawl across the trampoline, under the sail and up onto the opposite wing when coming about. Up to three people can take this for a lesson.

The Flying Scot has remained basically unchanged since it was first built in 1957. With bench seating built into the deck, it’s a little more comfortable and a less acrobatic sail than the Getaway. Even if you have limited experience, when the conditions are light the Wave is your best option. Up to five can take this for a lesson.

In higher winds, the Wave is an energetic sail for experienced sailors and a blast to fly a hull.

We don’t have strict boundaries, but rather some geographical and common sense limitations based on the conditions. We always sail within line of site due to the rapidly changing weather, and so that we can see and assist you if you have an issue.

We ask that you stay up wind and south of the islands to the North to avoid the shallow water. We recommend that you avoid sailing in the WaveRunner Area for an extended period of time.

No Sunfish, but you’ll like the Hobie Wave even better! It has a single sail and no clunky low boom to smack your head on.

Yes! You may use your own life vest as long as it is Coast Guard approved. Please see our staff in the office for life vest approval before heading out on the water.

We do require you to have some prior sailing experience in order to take out a boat on your own. If you don’t, then consider taking a sailing lesson with one of our awesome instructors.

This is different for everyone, but if you define “learning to sail” as acting as skipper of your own small boat, we recommend at least three two hour lessons. If you have not sailed before, we strongly recommend making your first lesson two hours instead of one. We will offer a discounted rate for multiple days of instruction.

15-20% is customary and much appreciated.

Up to around 15 MPH we are good to go! When the wind starts to gust higher than 15 MPH we restrict sailing to those with recent (within the past year) experience. Do not hesitate to give us a call to check on wind conditions in our area.

We cannot operate when the wind is sustained over 20.

We have strict weather parameters to ensure that we can rent safely. While certain conditions may be feasible for an experienced individual on their own vessel, we have to be more proactive when it comes to limiting our rental activity. We cease rentals when the wind is sustained over 20mph and we do not rent with storm cells in the area or a high likelihood of inclement weather. Other conditions such as wind direction and wave height may also play into our decision.

Absolutely, just remember that there is often a chance of capsize. In some conditions (and based on your experience) it may be important that your child is comfortable in the water and will not panic.

We want to make sure we’re setting your kids up for sailing success and those early sailing memories are important! We’ll be honest with you if we don’t think it will be a good idea.

The Getaway does not sail well without the jib. There are other ways to spill wind and depower using the traveler, but if you’re not comfortable sailing with a jib, you’re not going to be able to effectively sail the Getaway.

Strictly speaking, no they’re not. We are more than happy to facilitate in whatever way we can as long as we deem it safe to do so. Feel free to discuss specifics with a manager.

Typically we discourage it and recommend a Wave, but if someone has considerable experience and the wind is on the lighter side (sustained at 13mph or less) we can allow it.

While we don’t have trapeze rigs and harnesses available for our catamarans, our Getaways all have wings. Wings are outrigger seats that make it fun and easy to get out over the water.

Ocean Air Sports in Avon.

We recommend Corolla Kiteboarding and Outer Banks Kiting in Rodanthe.

What to Expect

Expect to make Outer Banks Sailing from Hatteras Island your new vacation tradition. Our new location leaving from Buxton Harbor on Hatteras Island delivers adventure and memories you won’t forget. Fun for the whole family, our stable catamarans are roomy, stable and perfect for shallow Outer Banks sound-side sailing.

Plan to jump in, chill out, and kick back. Kids are welcome, grandpa’s are just fine also. Everyone enjoys this #SailStiletto experience. Sunset sails are our most popular experience.

Guest Testimonial

Once in a lifetime experience. The search for your ultimate OBX vacation activity starts here. Captain J took my whole family out for a sunset cruise (5yr old and 7yr old). He provided us with not only stunning views of the July sunsets but an evening filled with memories and laughter. You want be sorry for placing this on your things to do list. Thx again Captain J for making my children a forever memory. Terry Lambert

Reserve Your Sailing Charter On Cape Hatteras

Phillips Boatworks offers catamaran sailing charters on Hatteras Island in 2 hour and 4 hour experiences. We have a schedule that includes morning, afternoon, and sunset sails. Our most popular sails are the sunset sailing experiences. All our sails leave from our new location in Buxton at the historic fish house location in Buxton Harbor, 48926 NC Highway 12, Buxton, NC 27920

What is the advantage of a longer 4 hour sail? The 4 hour sailing experience offer more time for swimming and exploring off the sailboat. Our catamarans are lightweight performance boats that are easily beached. On the 4hr sails, we typically pull the boat up on a sandbar so that our guests can hop off the boat, take a swim, harvest some clams, and learn more about the local soundside marine life.

Why choose the shorter 2hr sail? The 2 hour sails are great for a relaxing sailboat ride. The scenery and experience is gorgeous. Because we sail, our tours are silent and perfect for videography, photography, and conversation. If you don’t need to hop into the water and just want to kick back and relax, the 2-hour sail is perfect for your group.

Few places on earth offer better conditions for water sports than the Outer Banks of North Carolina! We're renowned for consistent winds, a temperate climate, and an abundance of water. The barrier islands of the Outer Banks are bordered by the vast Atlantic to the east and shallow waters of the sound to the west. Explore canals by kayak, catch the perfect wave on a glassy day, or experience the rush of kiteboarding - water sports adventures on the Outer Banks are practically unlimited.

Experienced water sports enthusiasts can perfect their skills in the ocean or sound, while beginners can take lessons and get hooked on a new sport. Professional instructors are available to safely introduce vacationers to a wide variety of water sports. Lessons and rentals are easily found in every town and village on the Outer Banks. Many instructors over beginner, intermediate, and advanced water sports lessons. Some of the most popular water sports on the OBX include surfing, kiteboarding, windsurfing, diving, parasailing, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and jet skiing. You can also find local businesses that specialize in eco-friendly water adventures.

Unlimited Wind & Water...

Seemingly endless amounts of water and ideal wind conditions make the Outer Banks one of the best places in the world for kiteboarding and windsurfing!

Kite Boarding

The smooth, shallow waters of the sound and our famous winds attract visitors from as far as Canada and Europe! Consequently, "Canadian Hole" on Hatteras Island earned its moniker. Canadian Hole offers ample room for kiteboarders and windsurfers, as well as a paved parking area and a bath house. You'll also find plenty of excited spectators in awe of the colorful display of kites and sails.

Sun Realty's Outer Banks vacation rentals are located near popular kiteboarding and windsurfing spots, and some of our rentals even offer direct sound access for the ultimate convenience. Give us a call at (252) 441-7035 if you have any questions about a particular vacation home's sound access. Let Sun Realty host your next kiteboarding or windsurfing adventure!

Outer Banks Kiteboarding

Kiteboarding is guaranteed to get your heart pounding no matter your skill level! Experts and beginners can hone their skills in the shallow waters of the Pamlico, Albemarle, and Currituck sounds. While experienced kiteboarders can head east and go extreme in the waves of the Atlantic. Both calm waters and challenging waves are available on the OBX. In many places on the OBX, the ocean and sound are easily within walking distance.

Want to give kiteboarding a try? Hatteras Island is world renowned for being a great place to learn. Miles of flat, shallow water and predictable winds allows beginners to learn quickly with minimal swimming. However, don't try to learn to kiteboard on your own. It's much safer and more efficient to take a lesson from a professional instructor. A beginner lesson will include basics such as rigging, line management, launching, and overall safety. Outer Banks kiteboarding instructors teach vacationers just like you every day. They know how to help you make the most of your kiteboarding experience.

Windsurfing is popular in all towns and villages on the Outer Banks, but Hatteras Island reigns supreme when it comes to windsurfing conditions.

Windsurfers can find convenient launch points all along the soundside of the Outer Banks. Some of our Hatteras Island vacation rentals even offer private soundfront launch points - talk about convenient! More daring windsurfers can move seaward to test their skills in the waves.

Want to give windsurfing a try? Save yourself a huge amount of time - sign up for a windsurfing lesson! This exhilarating sport requires practice and some technical expertise. There are numerous professional windsurfing instructors on the Outer Banks who can safely introduce you to the sport.

Find Your Wave on the OBX...

The Outer Banks of North Carolina has long been known as one of the top spots on the East Coast for surfing. The unique position of our barrier islands allows swells to make it to shore instead of breaking up in the ocean. Favorable winds and offshore storms also help create ideal surfing conditions. The Outer Banks boasts several pro surfers and surf competitions. Experienced surfers can find a challenge, and the rest of us can take a surf lesson!

Wave

On the Outer Banks, the surfing crowd is quite diverse. You'll find cool grandads who've been surfing since they were teens, professionals who quickly change from suits to wetsuits, kids who can rip better than you'll ever dream of, and novices experiencing the thrill of catching their first waves.

You'll see Outer Banks surfers in the water 4 seasons a year. Yes, even in winter! Good waves can happen during any season, but fall traditionally brings the most desirable swells. During peak summer and early fall, wetsuits are hardly ever needed - the water is usually in the mid-70s.

Outer Banks Surf Spots

One of the great things about Outer Banks surfing is that there are over 100 miles of coastline - you can join the lineup at a popular break, or you can head on down the beach to find a secluded spot. Each year, coastal storms change sandbar patterns, which in turn creates new breaks. There are well-known Outer Banks surfing spots such as "S-Turns" near Rodanthe, or Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills. The good news is that you can have a great session anywhere along the Outer Banks! Head north to Carova in your 4-wheel drive to surf and play on the beautiful beaches all day. Go to Corolla or Duck and you'll find vacationers enjoying the waves. The Central Beaches of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head offer easy parking and several great surfing spots. Hatteras Island is known as the pinnacle of Outer Banks surfing - this is where you'll find the best breaks and biggest waves. But don't worry, beginners can easily find more mellow spots along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Check out our list of Outer Banks surf shops to find one near your rental home!

Never surfed before? Numerous local professionals can safely introduce you to the sport. Lessons are available for both kids and adults.

Safety Measures and Precautions

Boating is a very enjoyable activity while on Ocracoke, and your safety is our number one concern.  You will receive a good lesson when you come to pickup your boat and you must be aware of safety measures that should always be followed in order to avoid injuries and fines.  Bow riding is absolutely never allowed.  It is dangerous, illegal and can result in injury.  All children 13 and under must wear a USCG approved life preserver at all times while on the boat, which we provide.  Please stay away from the back of the boat at all times.  The motor has a very sharp propeller and can cause injury if accidentally bumped.  Operators of the boat must be sober, no drinking and driving or driving while impaired.   The Pamlico Sound has some shallow areas, and you may run aground.  If this happens, tilt the motor up enough so it is still in the water but not digging into the sand and idle slowly to deeper water.  Please don't beach the boats or pull up on top of the sandbar or Portsmouth beach.  The boats should be anchored away from shore in 3ft of water in case of falling tides.  Always call us with any concerns.  Always remember to check your fuel tank to be sure you have enough fuel if you are renting for multiple days.  If an issue arises, please call us immediately.  We can either talk you through a problem or come to your assistance.

Make the most of your Ocracoke Vacation!

Explore the pamlico sound.

Explore the calm waters of the Pamlico Sound between Ocracoke and Portsmouth Islands.  Bring your camera to capture beautiful birds, pods of dolphins and the gorgeous scenery.  Soak up the sun!

Find a secluded sandbar

What could be more fun than finding your very own beach for the day?  No crowds, just you and your family and the unspoiled beauty of the Pamlico sound.  Jump in!

Go Clamming

Explore portsmouth island.

A favorite local pastime is clamming.  They are easy to catch and delicious!  Clamming is a fun and rewarding activity the whole family can enjoy.  We can point you in the right direction for some good clamming areas.

Historic Portsmouth Island is a 20 minute boat ride from Ocracoke.  Go back in time as you explore the abandoned village, or take a stroll on the beach where you can find rare and beautiful seashells.

Go fishing!

Make family memories.

The waters of the Pamlico Sound are home to a variety of fish.  Bring your light tackle rod and reels or stop by Tradewinds tackle when you get to Ocracoke.  We can show you some great places to go fishing!
