The area was named after Midshipman G.C. Heathcote, who is said to have been the first European to land there. It was one of the landing and camp sites of Captain James Stirling during his exploration of the Swan River in 1827. Point Heathcote was considered as a site for the capital city by James Stirling, before electing on its current position.
Point Heathcote was the site of the Point Heathcote reception home, later known as Heathcote Hospital, for the treatment of patients with mental illness. The Lieutenant Governor, Sir Robert McMillan, opened the hospital on 22 February 1929.
By 1999 the function as a hospital had ceased, and various ideas were put forward for the site
In 2000 the hospital and grounds were redesignated as a heritage precinct.
The land, together with the heritage buildings, is also protected by the heritage agreement, which is registered as a memorial on the land title.

Business Description
Located less than 10 minutes from Perth CBD, the Club has land and water pens, slipway, swing moorings, sailors with a disability hoist, ample car parking, restaurant with views across Swan and Canning Rivers to Perth city, three bars, alfresco dining, and a function centre. The Yacht Club has a licensed restaurant, with some of Perth’s best views overlooking the Swan and Canning Rivers with a clear view of Perth city.
The restaurant caters for lunches and dinners, as well as special functions. Three bars meet the needs of members and their guests, while two outside areas cater for informal al fresco dining.

Private club, enquire about social membership, small price for access to outstanding facilities. Just sitting around the clubhouse enjoying the outdoor restaurant area is priceless with 260 degree panoramic view across the Swan River to Perth city. Several restaurants; formal to casual. Play ground area for kids, Roster to join sailing events .. very good social culture
This place has average food and poor service. The place is overpriced and incredibly slow, and does not treat customers like they are wanted. Even the regulars hate it but it gets busy simply because it's easy to eat here after a day or night of sailing. I found the staff not rude, just didn't care and couldn't be bothered - this pervaded the entire establishment unfortunately but some staff were nicer than others. It was impossible to get the attention of staff unless you are wearing a hat - then suddenly they appear out of the woodwork to harrass you about antiquated club rules. The menu was expensive, but had a good variety - however the quality was average. I wouldn't bother again.
My very average fish and chips that took about an hour to arrive...
The food is ok and the service isnt great there wasnt many people there today but i will be back again

South of Perth Yacht Club was founded on 18 December 1945 with the official opening of the Clubhouse at Olives Reserve on 18 November 1946. Frank Sampson was appointed the first Commodore until 1949. In 1960 the club was relocated to where it now resides at Coffee Point on the western shore of the Canning River in Applecross.
