Spirit 72DH

Spirit Yachts has once again struck a perfect balance between a classic wooden sailboat and a contemporary yacht.

The British yard’s newest model, dubbed the Spirit 72DH , pairs an elegant mirror-varnished mahogany exterior with a decidedly modern interior. The 72-footer was designed for a European client looking to cruise, race and charter in the Mediterranean.

As you might have gathered from the DH designation, the yacht is one of Spirit’s Deckhouse designs that are characterized by long overhangs, flush decks and a raised coachroof. What sets it apart, though, is everything down below.

“The 72DH is the first Spirit deckhouse without a ‘mid-level’ seating and navigation area linking the cockpit and the main interior space,” Spirit’s CEO and head of design Sean McMillan said in a statement .

Essentially, the team opened up the interior to create a larger, brighter central entertaining space. In addition, white satin panels and LEDs were installed to meet the owner’s request for a “more modern style.” Of course, there is still a healthy amount of natural timbers to please the purists.

At the center of the yacht, the spacious saloon is fitted with a comfy sofa and an eight-seat Mahogany table that can be lowered to create space for an extra bed. The well-equipped galley is located port side, while the navigation area and chart table can be found starboard.

Elsewhere, there is one crew cabin and three guest cabins with en suites. The owner’s suite is equipped with a king-sized bed, a banquette sofa, a handcrafted dressing table with an integrated jewelry cabinet and a large en suite. To top it off, the cockpit sports a large table, 10 seats and a built-in drink fridge that ensures refreshments are at arm’s reach. Of course, there’s also plenty of storage space for water toys and tenders.

Up top, the 72DH sports a Bermudan sloop rig comprised of a carbon mast and boom from Hall Spars, nitronic rod rigging and electric Lewmar winches. In addition, the sailboat packs a Yanmar engine and Mastervolt alternator that together propel her to a maximum speed of 10 knots or 8 knots while cruising. She also has a small generator that can recharge batteries or power the electric oven and A/C.

Summer in the Mediterranean has never looked better—for one European seafarer, at least.

Spirit 72 DH : Wooden charter boat with excellent sailing characteristics

Sören Gehlhaus

 ·  17.05.2023

Gets going well even in light winds: the slim beauty weighs no more than a modern carbon boat of similar quality

Admirers of classic yacht shapes can't help but linger a little longer on "Anima II". Spirit's first 72 DH makes use of a clever trick: by dispensing with a railing, the 22-metre-long wooden construction makes the freeboard, deckhouse and deck step appear far more harmonious together than they already do. This is nothing unusual for Spirit yachts and is almost standard for formats under 80 feet.

But even the 30 metre long Spirit 100 "Gaia" and the almost four metre longer flagship "Geist" appeared after delivery and on regatta courses without the fencing, which provides security but is aesthetically annoying. And this is of course also the case on the boss's yacht, the Spirit 52 "Flight of Ufford" by Sean McMillan. The gusto of the shipyard co-founder and in-house designer prioritises the staging of the beautifully streamlined lines over much else, but not over the excellent sailing characteristics. Well, for long offshore passages or rough seas, railing feet have been worked into the high and already well-protected bulwark on "Anima II" like on the other Spirits - and thus unlike on J-Class jewellery.

Wood as the only material

McMillan founded Spirit Yachts in 1993 with friends in an old cowshed in Suffolk and now builds in modern halls in Ipswich on the east coast of the UK.

It never occurred to him to use a building material other than wood:

I love wood and have huge respect for the capabilities of the material and what you can create with it."

The foundations of the 72 DH were formed by moulded frames made of sapele mahogany, on which planks of Douglas spruce were laid in tongue-and-groove joints. Two layers of khaya mahogany, each three millimetres thick, were used as veneer, laid at an angle of 45 degrees and glued using vacuum infusion.

Only the high-quality and universal epoxy resin is used for laminating. After the lettering "Anima II" as well as the snake and dragon were applied to the transom in gold leaf and by brush, Spirit encased the entire hull in two layers of biaxial glass. When turned, the keel suspension was reinforced with carbon fibre and the interior was fitted with bulkheads made of twelve and 18 millimetre thick marine plywood.

Features of the Spirit 72 DH

The 4.80 metre narrow wooden construction displaces 26 tonnes, which is as little as a much more voluminous Baltic 67 made of carbon. The carbon fibre mast and boom from Hall Spars and the standing rigging from Nitronic Rod contribute to this. Electric winches from Lewmar move a sail wardrobe from OneSails consisting of a main, self-tacking jib, conventional jib, code zero and an asymmetric spinnaker. As is customary with Spirit, "Anima II" is adorned with modern appendages: a narrow composite rudder and a ten-tonne L-keel that reaches 3.10 metres deep and is held to the hull by 14 bolts.

The deck is formed by Douglas fir poles that run out into a narrow stern, where the shipyard can install solar panels on request. The tender garage and crane are located underneath. One disadvantage of the ranken Riss: the dinghy needs to be inflated before use, which can of course be done electrically.

Striking and flowing lines at the same time

As the deckhouse made of Sipo mahogany slopes noticeably towards the bulwark, the superstructure also blends smoothly into the lines when viewed from aft. The top view reveals seven hatches in different orientations and two striking skylights with diagonal struts that resemble cockleshells from above and cast long shadows below. As if that were not enough, light enters in front of them via a classic skylight. Sean McMillan points out an important detail: "The 72 DH is the first Spirit with a deckhouse without a seating and navigation area on the centre level, which connects the cockpit with the main interior."

Instead, the galley with its airy ceiling height and a central kitchen block that takes up a lot of space invites you to lean back, join in the cooking or grab a quick snack. With an induction hob, dishwasher, fridge with freezer compartment and microwave, the equipment is convenient for private and charter guests.

Spirit can be chartered for 25,000 euros per week

The latter book their Mediterranean cruise on "Anima II" via Ocean Independence from 25,000 euros a week. Two steps lead down past the navigation system on the starboard side into the saloon with a rectangular seating area, which Spirit also produces in a round shape at the customer's request, based on the curved interior of "Geist". The mahogany table can be pulled out and lowered to form an additional bed. The in-house design studio realised the owner's wish for a light-coloured interior. Naturally, there is dark mahogany with a high-gloss finish, but this is contrasted by the wall panelling, the narrow ceiling panelling in white and the dragon and snake inlay directly below the companionway. The master suite is located in front of the saloon, but still leaves room for the cabin of the crew of two in the foredeck, which is air-conditioned throughout and accessible via a large hatch. Two double guest cabins are located aft.

Sean McMillan describes the design as follows: "The owners wanted a more modern style, so we opened up the interior to let in more natural light and maximise the entertainment area. White satin-finish panels and LEDs complement natural woods but stay true to the contemporary brief."

Spirit Yachts currently has two more 72 DHs under construction. It always follows the same pattern, reveals the shipyard boss: "Every new project starts with a pot of coffee and a blank sheet of paper." The spiritus rector draws exclusively by hand and then forwards these scribbles to his designers, who translate the initial ideas into technically usable plans. The result of this special attention: no matter from which perspective, the lines of a Spirit are always one thing - coherent.

Spirit meets James Bond and whiskey

Spirit Yachts is the only manufacturer that regularly builds large wooden yachts. However, the shipyard programme also includes more manageable units. In the classic range, the English company builds yachts from 30 to 75 feet. The latest addition is a 30-foot daysailer that is highly ambitious in terms of style, technology and price.

The models in the Cruiser-Racer line with the abbreviation CR offer slightly more width, interior height and space. Like most of the manufacturer's yachts, they are also offered with electric drives and hydrogen generation, whereby each Spirit is more or less a customised construction, meaning that sensible solutions can be realised according to the owner's wishes. The third series consists of a trio of deckhouse yachts in sizes 63, 65 and 72 feet like the "Anima II". Superyachts in sizes 100 and 111 as well as motorboats complete the large range.

The English shipyard became famous through two James Bond films starring Daniel Craig: in "Casino Royale" (2006) a Spirit 54 plays a supporting role in Venice, in "No Time to Die" ("No Time to Die", 2021) a Spirit 46 in Jamaica.

The shipyard name was derived from the name of the first 37-foot-long delivery and was in no way intended to refer to spirits or express spirituality, says Sean Mc-Millan: "It was purely to do with the amount of whiskey I felt we needed to drink to see the project through. Hence the logo, which is modelled on a still." In English, spirit stands for high-proof alcohol.

Spirit 72DH first look: New project sees woodworking maestros embrace carbon

Yachting World

  • December 16, 2020

The latest model in build at Spirit Yachts, the Spirit 72DH is breaking new ground for this innovative East Coast UK yard in a number of areas

The Spirit 72DH will be configured to suit the owner’s specific requirements for fast cruising , racing and charter sailing in the Mediterranean .

A key request was for the displacement to be as light as possible, with the result this will be the first Spirit design with carbon used to reinforce the engineered timber/epoxy structure.

The laminated sipo mahogany ring frames are reinforced with carbon instead of stainless steel, while the veneered khaya hull planking has a layer of carbon applied on top of the timber for added stiffness.

A carbon-reinforced structure also links the keel, stainless steel chainplates and mast step. This will deliver the same strength as a stainless steel reinforcement cage, but with 800kg less weight, according to Spirit Yachts ‘ managing director Nigel Stuart.

The sloop rig is configured for performance cruising and occasional racing, with carbon mast and boom by Hall Spars, rod rigging and electric Lewmar winches.

The cockpit has space for 10 people to socialise and there’s deck storage for watersports toys and a folding RIB.

In a step away from the Ipswich yard’s usual interior arrangements, the Spirit 72DH is the company’s first deckhouse model to eschew a mid-level seating/navigation area in the deckhouse in favour of a more open arrangement.

“The owner wanted to maximise the living area and introduce a more modern style, so we opened up the interior and let in extra natural light,” says the yard’s founder and chief designer Sean McMillan.

The result is an interior that’s much more open and contemporary than any other yacht Spirit has built to date.

A combination of large 360° windows, portholes in the topsides of the hull and a white finish on interior panelling to offset the sipo joinery is intended to create a bright and airy atmosphere below decks.

Spirit Yachts 22m 72DH Anima II

Spirit Yachts 72 DH Anima II, a luxurious sailing yacht with a 1930s heirloom design and modern technology

If the urge to leap from a hovering helicopter into a waiting bulletproof Aston Martin DB5 while wearing a tuxedo suddenly proves irresistible, it’s only fitting. Yachts are synonymous with James Bond. More to the point, Spirit Yachts and James Bond share history.

The Spirit Yachts 46 Classic sailing vessel appeared as the famous Secret Service agent’s yacht of choice in the 2021 Ian Fleming inspired film, No Time to Die. The only reason we can think of that Bond didn’t choose the 72 Deckhouse was that the film preceded the launch by about a year.

Nonetheless, even if an assignment investigating Spectre is not on the itinerary, the Spirit Yachts 72 DH Anima II is every bit the capable, luxurious stunner. Whether racing in the Mediterranean, touring the globe, or leisurely docked at home in Malta, Anima II displays the effortlessly distinguished look of a 1930s heirloom yacht, owning a chic profile that reaches out over the water in long, graceful stretches fore and aft.

Hand-built craftsmanship: perfectly laid soft wood decking and impeccable mahogany fittings on Spirit Yachts 72 DH Anima II

Anima II is an authentically hand built yacht featuring perfectly laid soft wood decking, a flush deck design, a raised coachroof, impeccably fitted mahogany, and elegant brightwork. And yet, aesthetics are simply the beginning of the story. The 72 DH’s performance is legendary. After all, its recent launch in August of 2022 displayed a perfect pedigree dovetailing old world craftsmanship with top of industry modern technology.

Spirit Yachts

Owning the niche of modern classic yachts, Spirit Yachts meticulously designs and builds out of an impressive facility in the historic seafaring town of Ipswich in the United Kingdom. Every yacht identifies with traditional style, both inside and out, while boasting trendsetting technology that pays particular attention to the design and build profile below the waterline. Spirit Yachts’ success secrets, aside from beautiful aesthetics, embrace light displacement and an impressive power to weight ratio.

Every Spirit Yacht is different, hand crafted with its own customization to bring it perfectly in line with the lifestyle of the owner. It begins with a hand drawn design created through discussions with owners to ensure the yachts know their purpose in order to serve the owners well. The process graduates to digitized images and full-on computer analyses, ending in an exquisitely crafted work of art with capabilities nonpareil.

No Moulds, Just Wood

With the advanced materials many yacht builders are using today, why does Spirit Yachts prefer wood? Oh, so many reasons. It is natural. It is sustainable. It is durable. It is compatible with everything master craftsmen ask of it: bending, shaping, flexing, insulating against temperatures and noise, damping vibration. Wood also offers a great strength to weight ratio equal to that of carbon fiber, with greater tensile strength than any other type of hull material. Lastly, and importantly for Spirit, at the end of their useful lives as yachts, Spirit vessels can be separated from their components, rendering both wood and metal to be reused or recycled.

Hull construction starts with laminating meticulously crafted wooden ring frames. They are then positioned upside down along a “strongback” in anticipation of laminating them to the continuous centerline structure for the full length of the hull. Not a mould in site.

The stunning interiors of Spirit Yachts, showcasing artisan joinery, cabinetry, and carpentry in matched grain wood

After the beamshelves are fitted, the hull is beveled, faired, and ready for the initial layer of hull planking. The central frame is reinforced fitting an inner carbon frame to bear the load of the mast, chain plates, and keel in the larger models. Double-diagonal veneers are epoxy bonded to the hull for additional reinforcement, then a final sheath of epoxy glass preps the surface for a flawless paint finish and a modern, quick-drying replacement for varnish that delivers that impeccable ultra-glossy finish.

Interiors of Spirit Yachts are extraordinary as well. Exposed wood and planking give the saloons and cabins a beautiful, warm, welcoming feel, providing the perfect backdrop for the unique creations born of artisan joinery, cabinetry, and carpentry. All in gorgeously matched grain wood. One cannot help but marvel at the level of craftsmanship and the beauty of the completed vessel, appreciating the time and expertise required to achieve such a work of art.

Spirit Yachts reveals new Spirit 72DH

Friday, August 19th, 2022

Written by: Marine Industry News

Spirit 72DH

Spirit Yachts has revealed photos of its new Spirit 72DH (Deckhouse) sailing yacht.

Launched earlier this year, the custom Spirit 72DH was designed to meet a European owner’s criteria for cruising, racing, and chartering in the Mediterranean.

From the exterior, the British boatbuilder says the Spirit 72DH has the long overhangs, flush decks and raised coachroof of all Spirit Deckhouse designs. Down below, she houses a step change in Spirit interior design.

Spirit 72DH

Spirit Yachts CEO and head of design Sean McMillan says: “The 72DH is the first Spirit deckhouse without a ‘mid-level’ seating and navigation area linking the cockpit and the main interior space.

“The owners wanted to introduce a more modern style, so we opened up the interior to let in more natural light and maximise the central entertaining space. White satin panels and an LED lighting system complement the natural timbers but stay true to the contemporary brief.”

The port side galley is well-equipped for private and charter guests, with an induction hob, dishwasher, fridge-freezer and microwave. Opposite the galley on the starboard side is a navigation area and chart table.

In the centre of the yacht’s interior is the saloon, which has seating for eight around an expanding table, which can be lowered to create an extra bed. A starboard side sofa completes the central seating area.

Accommodation for eight is split across one crew and three guest cabins. A forward master suite comprises a king-sized bed, a banquette sofa on the starboard side, and a dressing table with integrated jewellery cabinet. The accompanying ensuite includes an electric toilet, basin, and separate shower cubicle.

Spirit 72DH

Guests have the option of two aft twin-bed cabins on the port and starboard sides. Both cabins are ensuite with an electric toilet, basin and shower. A twin crew cabin forward of the saloon completes the interior, which has air conditioning throughout.

On deck, the Spirit 72DH has a Bermudan sloop rig and is equipped for performance cruising or occasional racing. Carbon mast and boom from Hall Spars and nitronic rod rigging complement electric Lewmar winches.

Spirit 72DH

A sail wardrobe from OneSails comprises a mainsail, self-tacking jib and conventional jib, code zero, and an asymmetric spinnaker. The headsails are fitted to an electric furler below deck and the asymmetric is attached to a rotating padeye on the bow for short-handed sailing.

A Yanmar 4LV150 engine with a high output Mastervolt alternator will deliver a maximum speed of 10knots or 8knots whilst cruising. A small and efficient generator is fitted for battery recharging or to support the electric oven and air conditioning. The yacht also has the option to integrate Solbian solar panels into the aft deck to assist in regenerating the batteries.

Spirit 72DH

The cockpit has seating for up to ten people around a central table with an integrated drinks fridge. To make the most of summer cruising in the Mediterranean, the 72DH has deck storage for a range of watersports toys and an F-Rib tender.

Spirit Yachts will be displaying two electric drive sailing yachts at this year’s  Southampton International Boat Show  from 16-25 September 2022. As part of the firm’s drive to lower the carbon footprint of its yachts, the company will be exhibiting a new Spirit 44CR (cruiser racer) and a Spirit 30.

WE ARE ENGLAND

THE SPIRIT YACHTS STORY

Leading yacht design and build company Spirit Yachts is the focus of a BBC documentary titled Making Waves: Building Boats airing on BBC One on Friday 11 th November at 7.30pm.

As part of the wider BBC series ‘We Are England’, the programme tells the story of Ipswich-based Spirit Yachts; from its beginnings in a humble cow shed to the award-winning modern classic yachts being launched by the company today.

The series has a sustainability theme running throughout, highlighting companies lowering the carbon footprint of their products. Spirit Yachts has won several awards for its environmental innovation and initiatives, which are explored in the documentary.

Spirit Yachts’ founder and CEO Sean McMillan commented, “We are looking forward to watching the programme as a team, it is a proud moment for all of us. The creation of a Spirit yacht is down to an extremely talented group of individuals working together to design and build a person’s dream. The documentary opens our doors to the public to share an insight into how we create each one of our custom wooden yachts.”

Karen Underwood, Spirit Yachts’ Managing Director, added, “With COP27 highlighting the need for global climate action, we are proud to be part of a series championing British companies lowering the carbon footprint of their products.”

The documentary will feature another Suffolk-based firm, OneSails GBR (East). Based on the River Orwell at Levington, OneSails has been Spirit Yachts’ sailmaker partner since Spirit Yachts was founded in 1993.

Owner of the OneSails GBR (East) sail loft John Parker added, “It’s a fantastic opportunity to be included in the documentary alongside a great British brand like Spirit Yachts. Even if you are not a sailor, the craftsmanship, technology, and expertise that go into making a Spirit yacht and her sails are truly fascinating.”
