Yacht vs Catamaran: Which Boat is Right for You?
- On October 23, 2023
When it comes to leisure boating, two of the most popular options are yachts and catamarans. But what exactly is the difference, and which one is better suited for your needs?
In this comprehensive guide, I’ll compare the key characteristics between monohull yachts and twin-hulled catamarans.
Table of Contents
Visual comparison of catamaran and yacht designs, how they differ in handling and performance, onboard living spaces and amenities, ownership and operating costs, which boat is right for you, defining catamarans and yachts.
A catamaran is a type of multihull boat featuring two parallel hulls connected by a central deck. This twin-hull design provides more stability, expansive interior space, and shallow draft.
Yachts, on the other hand, have a single continuous hull and are known for their elegant aesthetics, lavish amenities, and versatility for long-range cruising.
Here’s a quick visual comparison of the general shapes and hull configurations:
Category | Catamaran | Yacht |
---|---|---|
Hulls | Two parallel hulls connected by deck | Single continuous hull |
Shape | Wider, more beamy | Sleeker, narrower |
Stability | Very stable with minimal rolling | More susceptible to rolling motion |
Draft | Shallow draft to get closer to shore | Deeper draft requiring deeper waters |
Living Space | Very spacious, open floor plans | More confined spaces |
Catamarans typically range anywhere from 40 to 70 feet in length, while yachts can be as small as 30 feet or over 100 feet for superyacht models.
When it comes to maneuverability and sailing dynamics, there are some key distinctions between catamarans and yachts:
- Speed – Catamarans are lighter and have reduced drag, making them significantly faster than yachts. Top speeds can reach up to 25 knots.
- Stability – With their twin hulls, catamarans offer unmatched stability and minimal rocking motion in rougher seas. This also reduces seasickness.
- Maneuverability – Yachts take more skill to maneuver tight spaces, while catamarans can turn 360 degrees within their own length.
- Windward Performance – Yachts point higher into the wind and sail more efficiently upwind. Catamarans excel on reaches and downwind sailing.
So for performance-oriented sailing, monohull yachts have some advantages. But catamarans trade maneuverability for supreme stability and comfort on the water.
One major differentiation between these two boat types is the onboard living spaces and amenities. Some key comparisons:
- Deck Space – With their spacious bridge deck, catamarans offer ample lounging and relaxation space for large groups. Yachts have more confined deck space.
- Cabins – Catamaran cabins are typically larger and more comfortable. But yachts allow for more privacy when chartering with other couples or guests.
- Entertainment – Yachts focus more on lavish entertainment amenities like high-end sound systems, theaters, and bars. Catamarans offer more outdoor fun.
- Overall Comfort – For stability, living accommodations, and seasickness reduction, catamarans are vastly more comfortable boats.
So catamarans excel when it comes to providing generous living areas for group getaways and family vacations. But yachts are tailored more for couples charters and luxury amenities.
A significant factor to weigh is the overall ownership costs between catamarans and yachts:
- Purchase Price – Due to larger size and dual engines, catamarans come at a higher initial purchase cost. Yachts are more affordable for comparable lengths.
- Fuel Efficiency – With two engines to power, catamarans use almost twice as much fuel to operate. Yachts are more efficient.
- Docking and Marina Fees – Catamarans incur higher fees because they take up more dock space, especially in high-traffic areas.
- Maintenance – More complex systems and dual engines onboard catamarans equate to higher lifetime maintenance costs.
- Resale Value – Depreciation varies widely, but yachts tend to retain resale value better in the pre-owned market.
Clearly, the costs of owning and operating a catamaran are substantially higher compared to a similar-sized yacht. Being aware of these expenses will help determine the right boat for your budget.
We’ve covered a lot of comparisons, so which boat type is the best choice? Here are some quick recommendations based on needs:
- For comfort, stability, and spaciousness on extended cruising trips – Catamaran
- For performance-focused sailing and nimble maneuverability – Yacht
- For luxurious amenities and entertaining small groups – Yacht
- For exhilarating speed and family-friendly features – Catamaran
- For affordable purchase and lower operating costs – Yacht
Of course, it depends on your individual priorities and boating style. Charter both for a test run to see which you enjoy more. At the end of the day, the right boat is the one that fulfills your needs and invites you to experience the magic of the open water.
Hopefully this guide has provided a helpful overview of the core differences between catamarans and yachts. Let the voyage begin!

Are two hulls better than one? If the array of new build and new concept catamarans are anything to go by, it’s a question the yachting industry appears to increasingly be asking.
Celebrity endorsement in the shape of Rafael Nadal has certainly helped raise awareness of the category, but beyond the tennis ace’s custom Sunreef 80 Power , more and more yacht owners are coming to see that cats are worthy of their attention: The twin hull design delivers larger volumes, greater stability, as well as increased efficiency and speed when compared to its monohull equivalent.
Beyond leisure cruising in shallow, tropical waters, today’s class of catamarans are being primed for global expeditions. The category is also shining bright with early prototypes demonstrating how yachting is going green, such as the hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered power-cat tender by America’s Cup team Emirates Team New Zealand.
From classic models to rugged explorers and support vessels to a hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered cat, here are seven stellar twin-hulled vessels that show how versatile the power-catamaran design can be.
Astilleros Armon’s ‘Wayfinder’
The second big cat–following the stealth-like 217.2-foot Hodor–in the Incat Crowther ShadowCat series, Wayfinder launched from Spain’s Astilleros Armon in 2021 as a support vessel to a superyacht. It’s already been spotted in the Mediterranean, dutifully playing its supporting role to the mothership. At 223.8-feet long, and with a 45.9-foot beam, the shadow boat has extra storage space for the mothership, a games room and an outdoor area all rolled into one, with a collection of extra features including a helipad, helicopter hanger, spare parts workshop, medical facilities, a flower room and a pickleball court. There is also space for a main crew of 18, with extra space for 14 supplemental crew or service staff.
Silver Yachts’ ‘SpaceCat’
In October 2022, SpaceCat emerged from Silver Yachts in Fremantle, Western Australia, the first multihull delivery from the Australian yacht builder behind the naval-styled explorer yacht Bold. Like the yard’s monohulls, the superyacht bears the signature of yacht designer Espen Øino who has described the category as the “SUV” of the sea for its potential to first divide opinion and then perhaps dominate the market. A compact 118.1-foot length hides an impressive 4,306 square feet of space across the tri-deck configuration; the largest being the 2,174 square-foot main deck. The series has been designed with owners who may want to own more than one. “The yachts could be positioned on three main continents; one in Asia, one in the Mediterranean, and one in the Caribbean, avoiding any hassle of repositioning and non-availability to use the vessel,” said the shipyard said in a statement at SpaceCat’ s launch.
Abeking & Rasmussen’s ‘Nurja’
When delivered in 2008, the 134.6-foot Silver Cloud stood out for its amphibian appearance and full-width helipad on the upper deck, but what attracted the most attention was her swath (small waterplane area twin-hulled) design, the first time such a concept had been seen in the superyacht fleet. The owner chose Abeking & Rasmussen for the build for a reason. He was impressed by the German yard’s proven success with the swath platform in its military and commercial builds. He believed the stability would offer an antidote to his wife’s seasickness, an assumption that was proven correct. In December 2020, the yacht changed hands and is now known as Nurja .
Sunreef’s 80 Eco
At last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, the largest yacht may have been Lürssen’s sleek 378-foot motoryacht Ahpo but, across the port, a catamaran less than a quarter of the size was turning just as many heads. With over 1,700 square feet of solar panels seamlessly integrated into her hull, superstructure, mast and bimini roof, the 80-foot Sunreef 80 Eco is a vision of the future, with fully electric propulsion for silent cruising. Along with smart innovations, including a rainwater collection system for washing down the deck and the ability to use her solar panels to heat up the boiler, there’s also plenty of proof that going green doesn’t mean compromising on luxury: The interiors are finished with sustainable materials, including natural fabrics and salvaged teak to reach the exacting standards of superyacht comfort.
Equipped with an electric-hybrid drive system, as well as both solar panels and hydr0-generation technology to top up battery power, the French-built Windelo 50 Adventure can reach both the wilds of Patagonia and the palm trees of the Pacific Islands at minimal cost to the environment. Scratch the surface of its classic catamaran aesthetic for more eco-friendly innovations like a hull constructed from a composite material of basalt and PET foam from recycled plastic bottles. These upcycled materials reduce carbon emissions by almost 50 percent compared to traditional materials. The interiors haven’t been ignored either: It’s a modern, functional design emphasizing sustainably sourced wood. The first of this series earned a special mention for sustainability at the European Yacht of the Year 2022 awards.
Profab Central Engineering’s ‘The Beast’
With its thick gray, geometric stripes that stand out against the endless blue of the South Pacific of its home waters, there’s nothing inconspicuous about The Beast . Delivered in 2019 by New Zealand’s Profab Central Engineering, the 128.7-foot vessel is billed as the ultimate adventure charter yacht, equipped with scuba diving equipment, wakeboards, SUPs, a waterbike and even a 42.7-foot sport fishing vessel called Baby Beast. The twin-hull design adds to its personality, says its charter manager, Ben Osborne from 37South in Auckland, New Zealand. “The extra volume allows The Beast to carry larger tenders and more equipment—setting it up perfectly for exploration—style cruising, while not sacrificing on the interior spaces,” he told Robb Report . The interior is styled like a Manhattan bachelor pad and can sleep 12 guests in five cabins.
Silent 120 Explorer
Proof that 007-style toys are no longer the sole domain of football pitch-sized yachts, the Silent 120 Explorer’s onboard stash includes a U-Boat Worx Nemo submarine and Xcraft eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft. And, true to sustainable super-spy form, rooftop solar panels slide open to reveal a smartly concealed e-VTOL touch-and-go landing pad. A generous 45.4-foot beam—plus the space saved by its solar and electric propulsion systems—is what makes such cool cruising extras possible on a boat of this size. Another of the new wave of cats designed for carbon-free adventure cruising, this latest project builds on the Austrian company’s previous all-electric launches, such as the Silent 60. The first 120 Explorer is set to hit the water in 2024.

Trimaran vs Catamaran: What are the Differences?
The debate between trimarans and catamarans has been raging for years, with no clear victor in sight. Despite their long-standing popularity as cruising vessels, trimarans have seen a resurgence recently – but what sets them apart from catamarans? The subtle differences lie mainly within the hulls; while monohulls are distinguishable several yards away, distilling one multihull from another requires closer examination of characteristics such as living space size accommodations, seaworthiness ratings , speeds achieved on test runs.
With these variables to consider – along with personal preference – deciding which vessel is right may be difficult indeed!
Performance and Stability: two distinct sailing experiences
The stability of a catamaran vs a trimaran.
When sailing on a monohull in strong winds, the boat can potentially capsize due to its single hull and lack of floatation. On the other hand, multihulls such as catamarans are more buoyant because they have two floats that help prevent immersion; however it still may be uncomfortable when navigating heavy seas. For the most optimal sail experience with great stability even through rough waters–pleasure trimarans provide an ideal combination! Three connected hubs act like small wheels over rippling waves while providing excellent comfort aboard no matter what conditions lie ahead!
Read also : Trimaran our ultimate guide
The wind and its influence on the performance of multihulls
In sailing, trimarans outperform catamarans in a headwind situation. Their unique hull design features both daggerboards and central weight focus which allows them to counteract the thrust of wind better so as to stay on course rather than drifting away like their counterparts do. This subtle difference makes significantly more efficient vessels resulting in overall faster speeds when heading into the wind – making trimiras an ideal choice for less experienced sailors seeking reliable performance!
Looking beyond traditional catamaran styles?
Trimarans such as DragonFly boast amazing features thanks to its “Swing Wing” system while Rapido Trimaran offers “an experience like nothing else”—thanks in part due to Morrelli & Melvin architect firm constructing this Vietnam built masterpiece!
For those seeking a luxurious floating lifestyle, the trimarans from shipyard NEEL are second to none! These vessels feature ‘Cockloon®’ areas which seamlessly connect saloons and cockpits – providing uninterrupted living spaces with breathtaking panoramic views. Alongside this is an expansive flybridge offering extra room along with comfortable cabins nestled within their own designated floats for ultimate relaxation. You could say that these modern marvels of engineering provide all you need in one single package – now it’s just down to choosing your destination!
Looking for the perfect blend of stability, comfort and interior space? Look no further than the NEEL 65 – a unique trimaran that boasts roomy cabins thanks to its enlarged volume. Not only does it offer more living area compared with typical catamarans – but also features an optimally aligned central hull which provides extra safety at anchor! So if you’ve been in two minds between these nautical vessels; perhaps this could sway your decision once and for all…
Trimaran vs catamaran safety: the width of trimarans makes them safer
The trimaran stands out as the most secure of its multihull contemporaries. Its superior design consisting of three hulls, effective anti-drift strategies and centre-mounted weights combine to provide it with a groundbreaking 27° righting moment – allowing for excellent stability in even gusty weather or choppy waters. In comparison, catamarans offer just 12° degrees protection against capsize – meaning that the trustworthiness offered by a trimaran is hard to match! Further punctuating this remarkable level of security are features such as buoyancy tanks which ensure that if capsizing does occur, sinking will not be an issue: making trimarans perfect vessels for sailing’s safety conscious connoisseurs.
Racing trimarans
In the last decade, trimarans have surged in popularity for racing purposes due to their enhanced speed and safety capabilities. Their stability on rough seas allows them to be pushed further than catamarans can go without sacrificing control of the vessel; this is why most multihull races since 2010 have been captured by a trimaran! The Jules Verne Trophy has not seen any different – all winners since its start in 2010 are proud owners of these three-hulled vessels.
How to make the right choice between a monohull, a catamaran, and a trimaran?
No matter what sailing adventure you have in mind and the destination, it is essential to select a vessel that will fulfill your dreams while meeting all of your demands. Make sure to pick wisely!
Choose a monohull sailboat if you like sailing!
Nothing quite compares to the feel and freedom of a sailing adventure aboard your own monohull sailboat. With its large, retractable keel, you can explore shallow waters where other boats may not venture while taking in stunning vistas from beyond the coastline. Enjoy an unforgettable experience with every rustle of wind across your sails!

Pick a catamaran if you like volume and calm seas
TThe catamaran is perfect for adventurers seeking the tranquility of sailing with family and friends. With a spacious interior, multiple cabins equipped with bathrooms, and an enviable amount of storage capacity above 12m in length – it’s easy to see why these boats have become so popular! However when navigating more turbulent seas keep in mind that their windward grip may make maneuvering tricky; but Catana’s boat selection has you covered thanks to its range featuring daggerboards allowing captains ultimate control over any situation.
Pick a trimaran for a good combination of volume and performances
For those looking for a sailing experience like no other, trimarans are the perfect answer. They offer lightning-fast speeds and truly exhilarating performances on open waters – all while providing plenty of roomy living space comparable to catamarans of similar size! Whether you’re attempting an adventurous transatlantic crossing or simply want to enjoy some pleasant cruising around the world, selecting a recreational trimaran could be your best bet.
Enjoy cruising on the NEEL 51 , a unique charter yacht that offers plenty of space without sacrificing performance. This trimaran-inspired vessel is perfect for travelers who want to explore new destinations quickly and safely — with speeds twice as high as other options!

After looking into the differences between catamarans and trimarans, we can conclude that they each offer distinct sailing experiences. Catamaran sails offer a sense of comfort and stability for extended cruising trips and luxurious living spaces, while trimarans are better on performance, safety – due to the increased width of their hulls – and speed when racing. Ultimately though, it all comes down to personal preference when it comes to choosing between a monohull, a catamaran or a trimaran. If you want to gain speed and enjoy the thrill of racing, then a trimaran may be your best option; however if you prefer comfort and more space while cruising, then a catamaran may be more suited for your needs. Whichever you ultimately decide to purchase, just make sure that it fits your specific circumstances and requirements.

Whether you’re a fan of stability or speed, there’s one boat that can give you both – the trimaran vs catamaran. Catamarans provide plenty of living space and comfort in calm waters but struggle with choppy seas, while modern trimarans deliver excellent performance even on rough days yet still offer good room to relax onboard. But if vintage sailing is more your style opt for an older-style tri since it won’t be equipped with as much creature comforts!
Catamarans and trimarans are two types of watercraft that rapidly cut through the waves, but when it comes to speed one stands out above the rest. Trimarans have gained a reputation for being fast enough to take on any other vessel in a race – making them an excellent choice for anyone looking to shave precious seconds off their time!
When it comes to safety on the sea, two of the most popular vessels are Trimarans and Catamarans. Thanks to their side hulls, trimarans offer a much greater heeling angle compared with catamarans – meaning they’re less likely to capsize or sink in rough waters. However don’t let that put you off taking out a catamaran – while not as secure as its three-hulled cousin – these craft still provide plenty of stability for your seafaring adventure!
If you’re looking for an affordable seafaring vessel, the choice between a catamaran or trimaran can be daunting. With numerous factors that impact cost – from age and length to comfort levels and desirability – it’s often hard to tell which of these two sailing vessels will fit your budget best. But with some research, you’ll find just the right combination of affordability and quality suited perfectly to your needs!

Fountaine Pajot

Discover the Top Power Catamarans for 2024
- By Yachting Staff
- Updated: September 10, 2024
Power catamarans have seen a surge in popularity, growing both in size and appeal. These cruise-focused yachts offer homelike comfort, fuel efficiency and user-friendly operation, making them a favorite among avid travelers. Their popularity extends to the bareboat charter market for the same reasons.
In this article, we explore the world’s top power catamarans, ranging from a 36-footer ideal for a cruising couple to a 78-footer perfect for entertaining friends and family. The propulsion options are diverse, including outboards, diesel inboards, hybrids, and even all-solar setups.
Top Luxury Power Catamarans
The following power catamarans are all vessels we’ve reviewed. They are listed in no particular order.
- Fountaine Pajot MY44 : A family-oriented cat suitable for long-range cruising and aimed at owner-operators.
- Silent Yachts 60 : This is a catamaran that can cruise comfortably for long distances using emissions-free solar-electric propulsion.
- Horizon PC74 : With interior and deck space like a much larger vessel, the PC74 is perfect for cruising the Bahamas and Caribbean.
- Aquila 36 : This beefy 36-footer is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran.
- Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat : A spacious design, this vessel fits the volume of a 130-foot-long monohull into just 78 feet of length overall.
- Horizon PC68 : This cat has a stable ride, long range, volume to spare and intriguing layout options.
- Two Oceans 555 : An elegantly simple yet luxurious 55-foot custom with the space and amenities of a much larger vessel.
- Lagoon 630 : From its open salon to its spacious decks, the Lagoon is a comfortable and luxurious platform.
- Fountaine Pajot MY5 : A midsize cruiser with serious big-boat space for family and friends.
- Prestige Yachts M8 : The voluminous 65-footer lets owners customize onboard spaces.
- Aquila 47 Molokai : Calling all anglers: This cat has 60-plus-knot speed and is set up for serious bluewater adventure.
Fountaine Pajot MY44
The Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Silent Yachts 60
Solar panels, ocean-crossing range and self-sufficiency define the electric Silent-Yachts 60 power catamaran. If there was any question that the “Tesla moment” has arrived in yachting, the Silent 60 clearly provides a positive response. Consider, for a moment, crossing oceans in silence at 5 to 6 knots without consuming a drop of fuel and never needing to plan your course between fuel stops. Imagine sitting at anchor and running the air conditioning all night, not to mention all the galley appliances plus the washer-dryer, without the hum or fumes from a genset.

Horizon PC74
As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.
“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.
The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the Horizon PC74 is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

The Aquila 36 is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.
With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat
Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC68
Multihull yachts ride differently than monohulls, often counteracting the sea’s motion for a smoother, more stable ride. On the Horizon PC68 , sharp hull entries make head seas seem gentle, and a Humphree stabilization system with blades reduces roll. Horizon uses SCRIMP construction for resin saturation that maximizes strength with an 111,112-pound displacement. And with a 5-foot-4-inch draft, the PC68 invites island cruising.

Two Oceans 555
With 27-knot speed, house-like volume, an on-deck master and top-tier tech, the Two Oceans 555 is a formidable power catamaran. Dave Jirikovic of HMY Yachts was on a quest. The sales broker was looking for the meanest, nastiest patch of Gulf Stream he could find to show a potential client what the Two Oceans 555 power cat could handle. And just as he had intended to show us, the broad-shouldered power cat didn’t even notice. He even dropped the single-lever throttles back to idle and left the 25-foot-wide Two Oceans 555 beam-on to another set of square-edged seas. The 55-footer brushed that off too. Jirikovic tried quartering into the seas—never a happy angle for catamarans—and the yacht drowsed through them.

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the Lagoon 630 MY burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.
Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY5
The flybridge deck on the Fountaine Pajot MY5 is a standout feature, offering virtually unobstructed 360-degree ocean views and an elevated beach club vibe. Aft of the off-center starboard helm is a spacious area perfect for entertaining, complete with a wet bar, refrigeration center, and ample seating. It’s the most popular space aboard according to the builder. And if the weather turns for the worse, a second helm station in the saloon allows the skipper to pilot the MY5 in climate-controlled comfort.

Prestige Yachts M8
How fitting it was that Prestige Yachts introduced its new M-Line flagship, the M8 , at Portopiccolo, a picturesque yachting village outside Trieste, Italy. Formerly a quarry, the cliff-side area had been chiseled into a clean site rife with eye-catching vistas, much like the French builder’s 65-foot power catamaran and its nearly 3,000 square feet of usable real estate.

Aquila 47 Molokai
With every boat, there’s an origin story. In the case of the Aquila 47 Molokai power catamaran, it starts with MarineMax, which saw people renting boats for bareboat charters. MarineMax Vacations was born. After experimenting with several production yachts, the company decided to build its own: the Aquila line, designed for charter as well as for sale to owner-operators.

Ned and Misala - EXCESS 11
"I found that sailing was both relaxing and stimulating, as well as a good escape from the stress of my profession. »
Jeff B - EXCESS 11
“When the Excess 14 first came out, it seemed almost perfect. The main advantages of this catamaran are its perfect size for two people, and its ease of sailing. With the boom being low, it’s easy to handle.”
Tony & Heather - EXCESS 14
“We loved the family atmosphere. Excess is like one great big family to us, and we're really glad to be part of it! They're always there to listen to us and advise us.”
Jeniffer and Cédric - EXCESS 14
“I love both the profile and the “hybrid” concept, halfway between a traditional monohull and a very cruisey catamaran such as a Lagoon. It's comfortable and easy to sail, with no more water on deck... And ladies prefer a boat that doesn’t heel!”
Giovanni C - EXCESS 11
“I've been seduced by the performance of the Excess range, and that’s really why I've just bought an Excess 14, which for me is the ideal compromise. For me, with my sailing experience, it’s interior space and habitability, it meets all my expectations!”
André G - EXCESS 11
“We spent exactly 365 days onboard of our Excess 11 in both the Mediterranean and the Caribbean and loved the combination of comfort and sailing performance. We never imagined that taking showers or cooking while crossing an ocean would be so much fun!”
Marco and Lizzy - EXCESS 11
“In our opinion, this is the perfect compromise between comfort under way and at anchor, and great sailing sensations with performance that frequently impresses us! It sails very well upwind as well as in light airs. From 7 knots of apparent wind, we move faster under sail than under motor. We don't regret our choice one bit, and enjoy every day spent on board our Silène.”
Marion and Arthur - EXCESS 11
" - About the Excess Factory Tour - A thousand thank-yous for a wonderful day on Saturday. We really enjoyed taking part. The tour of the premises, with perfect commentary, was very interesting and informative. Thank you also for allowing me to see a preview of my own boat. "
“Yes, we were very impressed with the Excess 14. Each year, we teach hundreds of students how to sail on all the latest catamarans in production, from Fountaine Pajot, to Bali, Nautitech, etc..."
Tim G - EXCESS 14
"The boat was really light and fast, the mainsail is laregerand easier to operate. The sails can be hoisted and lowered very quicly... The self-tacking of the foresail, ma,ny catamarans don't have this. This one is especially good for leisure sailing, family outing, for the begginers starters... First of all, it's covenient. That's impportant, it's easy to maneuver, it's easy to get started."

The environment is our priority.
Windelo’s innovative catamarans, combining recycled and bio-sourced materials, electric motors, and renewable energy sources as prime, received a special mention for “Sustainability” from the European Yacht Of The Year 2022!
Innovation is the way to go.
Windelo is the desire to expose oneself to something new, innovative, powerful, and bigger than oneself. So, we seek innovations in eco-composite materials, industrialization techniques, and sailing uses to propel a new economic reality.
Performance , our DNA.
Designed by architects Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman, Windelo catamarans are recognizable by their slim, well-balanced hulls, designed to enhance our catamarans’ performance and seaworthiness. True bluewater cruisers, Windelos are built for the pleasure of sailing and exploring long distances and getting their fast.
The comfort of your home.
The Windelo team designs spacious modern catamarans that offer maximum comfort, even during your long sailing journeys. The key was to provide a feeling of both space and light and an ultimate open-plan layout, eliminating the barriers between indoor and outdoor space by creating a vast living area. Rethinking how to live and sail a catamaran means life on board is cleverly organized right by the center of gravity for increased stability and comfort.
They chose Windelo !
And they share their stories.
The Windelo Spirit by Gautier and Olivier Kauffmann, founders of the company

As part of the creation of new types of catamaran made in Occitanie, an audacious choice of ecological innovation has been selected in partnership with the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France). It’s a question of combining ecological performance in terms of minimizing the environmental footprint and structural resistance, and this, in a global approach of circular economy on all parts of the boat. To do this, and in connection with the IMT MINES ALES, Windelo has relied on the use of secondary raw materials, competitive virgin petroleum-based materials, that fully comply with the specifications in terms of mechanical performance. This is a real first step to the development of a 2.0 fleet ships fully integrated into the challenges and ecological challenges of the 21st century.
Associated with an ecological approach of circular economy integrating a not insignificant part of competitive secondary raw materials from virgin materials, the architectural design and the resistance of materials on the new Windelo catamarans are mechanically tested in the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France) in connection with the architects and designers of the project. The design of the ship, and in particular the hulls and bows, go through a search for efficient structuring and arranging of materials composing it, combined with a mechanically optimized geometrical assembly. To this end, specific test developments, such as the study of distortion of the structure and of the panels constituating the hull of the ship, are studied by digital image correlation techniques coupled with standardized strength tests.
Founder of Catana
“The cruising program for this new boat raises the question of the antagonism between the search for performance under sail and the pleasure of navigation, and the development of pleasant living spaces. The originality of the answer is provided here in the arrangement of the cockpit bringing together the helm and maneuvers to the center of the boat and in the arrangement of living space that occupies the rear of the nacelle.
Just behind the mast the outer cockpit offers two helm stations protected from the wind and spray, a beautiful view of the sails and bows, and allows to have all the maneuvers on hand while limiting the needs to circulate on the bridge. Out of navigation, the cockpit can be more widely protected from the outside and open to the rear space.
Fully opened behind this cockpit, we have not developed two living spaces duplicating one inside the other but a single large space which is ajustable. We have focused our efforts on the geometry of the material and visual limits of this space and on the opening kinematics of the bays. Once opened, they “disappear” to transform the interior into an exterior. The generosity of these openings also allows to modulate the ventilation of this space by playing on a wide range of opening on its four sides
This work on the modularity and the disappearance of limits is found at the extreme rear of the nacelle, with an articulated platform to the davits transforming it into a floor when anchored, and in the rear cabins, whose wide turning porthole eliminates the angle between side plating and back side. The cabin space is therefore generous despite the relative narrowness of the hulls.
All these choices allow us to combine a contained hold of the nacelle, pledge control of the weight estimate, to a generous living space, with a central part given to navigation and maneuvering. The slenderness of the forward spikes, the significant free height under the platform, and the attention paid to the centering of the masses, complete the marine qualities expected for an offshore navigation program.
The other originality of the project brought by this new construction site is in the approach of “eco-design” on materials and construction. Strongly limiting the use of molds, the latter brings a greater margin of freedom in the variations and evolutions of the boats thus conceived. ”

Who could know if it is the father or the son who is the most passionate? It doesn’t matter. The important thing is to write an innovative project within a family culture, for today and for generations to come. Hand over the guiding light, this is Olivier Kauffmann’s will. “At first I wanted to make my own boat, for me and my family; go on trip around the world living on a efficient and pleasant catamaran. I dreamed of a new quality of space. Today, the dream has matured, and I want to share it with the great family of sailors. »
Windelo is the desire to expose us to something new, innovative, powerful, bigger than oneself. To seek innovations on materials, techniques of industrialization and uses to impulse a new economic reality. “We want to be part of this transformation related to the respect of our environment, it is for us, essential to work in this respect of men and nature. Men are at the heart of the project with the desire to recruit and form a passionate team, surrounded by experts recognized as the best in their field.
And the innovation doesn’t stop here, because the constructive process makes it possible to envisage fast evolutions from one boat to another while remaining well priced. An ambitious and respectful project ; Welcome to the Windelo adventure.

HH Catamarans – a new range of performance cruisers from China
- Elaine Bunting
- January 15, 2016
A range of fast-paced, sleek and modern-looking boats from Hudson Yacht & Marine based in south-west China will include cats from 55ft to 115ft, reports Elaine Bunting
HH Catamarans is a name you may not have heard of (yet), but behind this new brand is one of the largest-scale investments and boldest thinking in some years. The plans are ambitious, with a range of big, fast, luxurious catamarans up to superyacht scale.
The company is Hudson Yacht & Marine, based in south-west China, which sees its main market in Europe and the US, hence its appearance in Annapolis.
At the new facility in Xiamen, an island city lying between Hong Kong and Shanghai, the first is being built of what is to be a range of catamarans from 55ft to 115ft: the HH55, HH66, HH77, HH88 and HH115.
Rendering of the HH88
Four HH66s have been sold and are already in production. The first is due to launch in February for an Asian owner, and tooling for the HH55 is underway.
If the appearance of these resembles the Gunboat range more than the average production cruising cat, that is hardly surprising: the designs are the work of Morrelli & Melvin, the design team responsible for 18 Gunboats, and whose expertise in performance multihulls over the years spans A Class and Nacra catamarans to the late Steve Fossett’s PlayStation and, more recently, BMW Oracle Racing.
All will be fast-paced, sleek and modern-looking boats aimed at fast passagemaking and comfortable open plan ‘indoor/outdoor’ living. The HH55 and HH66 are styled as ‘a light and strong raceboat in disguise’. The HH66 is in composite construction, primarily aimed at cruising but, according to Morrelli & Melvin, “able to kick it up a notch”. So it is ultra light, and has C-shape daggerboards and T-foil rudders.
The HH55 is available in two configurations: forward cockpit and centre steering or dual aft steering and either in full-on performance-mode carbon composite construction or a less costly epoxy/E-Glass alternative. It, too, features C-shape daggerboards and T-foil rudders.
NZ builder brought in
Besides commissioning Morrelli & Melvin for the designs, owner Hudson Wang brought in New Zealand boatbuilder Paul Hakes four years ago. Hakes, a well known racing boat builder very experienced in building in pre-preg carbon, admits that he was “quite taken aback” by the scale of the company’s commitment to building boats – to date it has spent US$50m on building a boatyard. In that time Hakes has built several of the Judel Vrojlik-designed HH42, the best known example of which is Richard Matthews’s Oystercatcher XXX .
Hudson sees yacht manufacture as part of a serial manufacturing operation. The company’s products are wide-ranging. It produces around 20 per cent of baseball bats bought in the US, makes aircraft escape slides, barbecues and coolers, and employs some 4,000 people, of which 400 are in the boatyard. Its history in boats goes back to building J/80s and RIBs.
Tooling for the HH55 is also well underway. Paul Hakes tells us that the yard has finished a new fit-out hall and now has capability to have four or five HH66s and five to six HH55s in build at a time.
Preliminary drawings for the HH88 have been done and sufficient structural detail to allow price estimates. Designer Gino Morrelli says that the company is in talks with two potential owners.
Morrelli emphasises that the range could also go beyond the 115-footer currently planned. “We think the yard has capability to go to 150ft and they’ve built their new building to get that out the door, as that is where we think we will be in five to six years.”
Each of these boats can be highly customised, and renderings show very modern interiors. The zingy hull colours illustrated emphasise the message that Hudson is aiming to appeal to owners not hidebound by tradition, and perhaps migrating from motorboats.
The fact that the business has put its weight so strongly behind multihull production is yet another indication of growing interest in this area of sailing. “As far as the sailing market is concerned, the share of multihulls is growing, and bigger boats are coming out [of the downturn] faster than smaller boats,” says Morrelli.
