After 20 years running YachtSailing, people have a lot to say about us.
We were dealt a Royale Flush on the Casino Royale catamaran in the Greek islands. Yachtsailing.com made the transition from our hotel to boat a breeze by Eugene and his staff. We got greeted by our Captain Haris
I listened to the wisdom of Yacht Sailing guru Eugene - who helped me plan a stunning week long adventure with Vicky & Captain Harris which gave our group the time to explore and rest in perfect measures.
This is my first time on a catamaran. I didn’t know what to expect so everything was a new experience for me. This was a trip of a lifetime for my husband and myself.

Charter a Sailing Yacht in Greece
We know that Greece is a fabulous destination. But, why charter a sailing yacht or catamaran?
Build Your Own Itinerary
Sailing yachts are your luxury transportation and accommodations on the sea, with the ability to build your own itinerary. You can wake up in a new place each day or spend several days in the same picturesque place. It’s all up to you.
Greece on Board offers 7-and-15-day itineraries.
Good for a Range of Travelers
Another reason sailing yachts are a great choice is that they cater to a wide range of people. Whether you are a beginner sailor or an experienced one, if you prefer to be active or to take things slow, chartering a sailing yacht is an excellent choice. Families, couples, friends, and adventurers-it’s an unforgettable experience no matter the size or interests of your group.
Your Own Skipper and Team
The best reason to charter a sailing yacht is that you can see the Greek islands from a private vessel with your own skipper and experienced team. You just have to relax and enjoy the ride.
It’s an Immersive Experience
There is nothing like sailing on the Greek seas. Let the skipper and his crew harness the wind and take you from one breathtaking island to the next.
Sailing by wind is one of the purest experiences in life. Our sailing vessels not only provide transportation but a full, immersive travel experience that offers our guests a deep connection to nature and the sea. No engine noise or rumbling, just following the ebbs and flows of the water around us and the wind that guides us, lulling our guests into a state of relaxation and happiness.
Sailing Destinations
Greece on Board offers a variety of destinations on your 7-or-15-day private sailing yacht sailing trip. Some of the island destinations might be changed because of weather or sea conditions, but your skipper has the experience of knowing when to adjust course if necessary. Here are some of the wonderful places we have the possibility of visiting.
The Saronic Gulf
The Saronic Gulf is a body of water nestled between mainland Greece and the Southern Peloponnese, a short sail from Athens.
An ideal place to sail for people looking for a relaxing, easy sailing vacation, the Saronic Gulf offers calm waters, natural beauty, and beautiful historical and waterfront sites.
There are many beautiful places to visit on the Peloponnesian coastline in addition to many picturesque islands in the Saronic Gulf. We highly recommend including Hydra, Spetses, and Poros.
The Cyclades
A sailing trip to the Cyclades offers a trip through the pearls of the Aegean and some of the most visited destinations in Greece.
There is a reason people love the Cyclades . The architectural scenery of white-washed houses, hilltop churches, and idyllic villages dazzles the eyes. There are unlimited beaches, coves, and blue waters to explore.
While the water conditions in the Cyclades are sometimes rough during July and August, it might be enjoyable for more experienced sailors.
Some of the islands that the Greece on Board team can include in your Cycladic itinerary are:

Yacht Charters in Greece with Istion
Greece is quite simply the perfect sailing destination in Europe. Blessed with a mild southern Mediterranean climate with an extended summer giving a comfortable sailing season of close to eight months, our small country has over 13,000 kilometres of coastline to explore . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .
At Istion Yachting, we have been providing unforgettable sailing holidays in Greece for more than 30 years. From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. Our experienced skippers and crews, charter base staff, planning departments and every one of the wider Istion team is an expert in their field and is ready to assist you in planning the perfect sailing holiday in Greece . We look forwarded to welcoming you this summer!
There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!
Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.
Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.
For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .
The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.
We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.
Another advantage is that the area is well protected from the annual Meltemi winds that can blow strongly in July and August and may create challenging conditions for less experienced sailors.
The Argo Saronic Gulf also has plenty of places to visit on either a one or two-week holiday. One-week holidays will usually take in the nearby islands of Aigina and Poros before looping down to the coastal town of Ermioni and the cosmopolitan islands of Spetses and Hydra further south. A visit to Epidavros for a quick trip to its famous ancient theatre is not to be missed for the history buffs.
Two week holidays allow you to explore further east, with the coastal towns of Nafpleio, Leonidio and Kyparissi offering relaxed mooring while cruising the coast of the Eastern Peloponnese.
We invite you to learn more about our Athens charter base , download our sample one-week Saronic Gulf sailing itinerary for inspiration and contact us with any questions, we are here to help you plan your perfect sailing holiday.
Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.
Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.
A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! If you want a helping hand our skippers are the best in Greece and will be happy to take care of the sailing and navigation so you can enjoy the islands worry free.
The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.
Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.
Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.
Istion maintains three bases in the Ionian, on Corfu in the north and in Lefkas (or Lefkada) and nearby Preveza further south.
Itineraries starting from Corfu may include multiple stops along the Corfu coast, visits to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos and visits to mainland ports including Parga and Syvota .
Trips starting from Lefkas or Preveza may head either north towards Corfu or South towards the islands of Kalamos and Kastos and then on to the mythical island of Ithaca and nearby Kefalonia . Note that our base in Preveza is just 10 minutes from the Aktion Airport where all charter flights to Lefkas arrive. If your flight times are tight, Preveza is a great option .
We recommend downloading our sample sailing itineraries for trips leaving from Corfu and from Lefkas or Preveza . If you need more recommendations for a truly unique voyage through to the Ionian just contact us , we will be happy to help.
The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean are close to our heart. The central island of Kos is where Istion Yachting first started operations in 1992 .
The Dodecanese are known for their wonderful beaches and rich history ranging from the ancient to the medieval to the modern in a delightful kaleidoscope of sights and sounds . The area has relatively mild wind conditions that are perfect for sailing throughout the year and has plenty of sun and warmth during the summer months.
Istion now has two bases in the Dodecanese, our home base on Kos and another on the historic island of Rhodes . From Kos you may head north towards the islands of Kalimos, Leros and Patmos and if time permits all the way to amazing Ithaki and Fourni .
Heading south from Kos will put you on course to visit the islands north of Rhodes including Nisiros, Tilos and Symi . Setting sail from Rhodes itself also reaches these islands or you can choose to head west, exploring the coast of Rhodes and visiting the quaint island of Chalki and the beautiful islands of Karpathos and Kasos .
Charter flights from most European countries fly direct to both Kos and Rhodes making them a great starting point for your next Aegean adventure !
The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .
Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .
We have two charter bases servicing the Sporades, a base on the island of Skiathos where most European charter flights arrive and another on the mainland city of Volos . Volos is a convenient starting spot for guests arriving by road with their own vehicle and allows exploring of the lovely coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf and Pelion on your way out to the islands – highly recommended !
Bareboat Charters
Tailored for the seasoned sailor, bareboat charters hand the helm over to you, allowing complete freedom to navigate the Greek seas at your own pace . Your sailing party must have at least one licensed skipper and one experienced crew member at a minimum to be able to rent our yachts as bareboats.
If you have some sailing experience but do not hold a valid license then a bareboat charter is not (yet) for you and your best option is a skippered charter where our friendly captains will give you a helping hand. If you are an experienced sailor and have no concerns about the challenges of wind conditions, navigation and docking then we invite you to read more about our bareboat charters here and contact us with any questions you may have.
Skippered Charters
Our skippered charters are the perfect blend of guidance and freedom, designed for those who have some sailing experience, are eager to learn or just want to relax and let a professional do the hard work . With an Istion skipper at your side, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with their expert navigation and docking skills while still playing an active role in your sailing adventure.
It's an educational and exhilarating experience where you can hone your sailing skills, participate in manoeuvring the yacht, and even take the helm under the watchful eye of your skipper. It is an amazing experience for everyone and kids in particular have a great time learning about sailing and playing little captain for a week.
Our skippered charters always start off with a briefing between you and your skipper so you can learn about the area you are going to sail and the islands you may want to visit. Our skippers know the Greek seas inside out and based on your preferences they will suggest recommended itineraries to follow, which islands to visit and what hidden beaches to swim at.
If you are planning your first sailing holiday in Greece , you are in the very best hands with Istion's professional skippers by your side. Read more about our skippered charters here , or just get in touch to start planning your perfect sailing holiday in Greece.
Fully Crewed Charters
For those of you that want to indulge in the epitome of maritime luxury, our crewed charters promise a carefree and opulent experience in Greece. This option is perfect for those who wish to sit back, relax, and soak in the Mediterranean sun while every detail is taken care of by our professional crew. From expert navigation to gourmet meals, and from personalized itineraries to attentive service, every aspect of your voyage is meticulously curated to ensure unparalleled comfort and elegance .
Crewed charters are available on a range of our top end sailing yachts and catamarans , and for those that want the thrum of an engine beneath their feet and to make a grand entrance wherever they go our exclusive motor yachts are waiting for you to step aboard. A crewed charter with Istion isn't just a holiday; it's an all-inclusive experience where you are the honoured guest and the Greek Isles your exclusive playground . Discover more about our fully crewed dream vacations here .
Sailing Yachts
Sailing yachts are perfect for those who love the classic feeling of sailing. Designed to be easy to handle, they smoothly glide through the water and let you enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek seas. They're a bit slower than other boats, and they lean to one side when the wind blows, which is all part of the classic sailing adventure. Their charming appearance and comfortable ride make them ideal for those who want to experience traditional sailing in a relaxed and eco-friendly way.
Sailing yachts are also the most budget friendly option for a sailing holiday in Greece. Our smaller yachts with three cabins and space for up to six guests (or eight if two sleep in the main cabin) can be rented for as little as roughly 1200 Euros a week in the low season. Costs for larger yachts with up to 6 cabins and space for up to 12 guests rise to approximately 10.000 Euros a week in the high season.
At Istion, we proudly offer a wide selection of the latest models as well as impeccably maintained older sailing yachts from Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria, Sun Odyssey, Hanse and other top shipyards. Whether you're planning a cozy trip for a small group or a grand sailing adventure for a larger party, we have the right yacht to suit your needs.
Catamarans are the choice for those who want lots of space and a stable, comfortable trip. With their two-hull design, they don't rock as much as sailing yachts, which is great if you're new to sailing or easily feel seasick. You can also get closer to the beach with a catamaran, as they don't sit very deep in the water. Catamarans offer a smooth and spacious experience, making for a relaxing and comfortable sailing holiday and are a very popular choice for first time sailors in Greece.
For families and larger groups, the bigger cabins and more room to move around on a catamaran make them a good fit for your holiday. The double hull layout means two families can easily sail together while each having their own 'private space' on either side of the main deck. Catamarans also tend to have one washroom per cabin, a feature all parents with teenage kids appreciate.
The comfort and space offered in a catamaran puts them in a higher budget bracket than our monohull sailing yachts. Our smallest catamarans with four cabins and room for up to 10 guests start at roughly 2100 Euros per week in low season. Our top of the line models can range up to 16.000 Euros plus in the middle of the high season.
We are proud to have one of the largest fleets of catamarans in Greece with brand new models from Lagoon, Bali and Fountaine Pajot among others. We invite you to browse all our catamarans and contact us for any guidance you need to help make your sailing adventure in Greece perfect in every way.
Motor Yachts
Motor yachts are all about luxury and speed. They have multiple levels with lots of space, including big bedrooms and expansive living areas. These boats move quickly, powered by strong engines, so they're great if you want to explore a lot of places fast and make an impressive entrance wherever you go.
Our motor yachts are all modern, with plush interiors and all the latest features for entertainment and entertaining. However, they do use more fuel and require a professional captain and crew, so there's a higher cost for this kind of luxury and speed. If you're looking for a high-end and fast-paced trip with all the modern comforts, motor yachts are the way to go .

From the moment of initial contact with Captain Yiannis, everything was seamless.
Our experience has been nothing short of exceptional.
From the moment of initial contact with Captain Yiannis, everything was seamless. This company and the entire team could not have been more helpful! We live in the USA and never had a problem with communication. The Catamaran we selected was the Lagoon 450F. It was beautiful, spacious, clean, and easy to live on for a week as we sailed to beautiful beaches.
The Ionian Islands we visited were breathtaking, especially Kefalonia – it was our favorite! Above all, the feeling of safety that Captain George ensured throughout our trip made our journey even more memorable. We can’t wait to experience it again.
So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable sailing experience around the Greek Islands with a professional company and a knowledgeable and friendly guide, look no further!

Great knowledge of the area and its history.
Excellent week of sailing in the Greek Islands with Yiannis. He has great knowledge of the area and its history. He showed us unique beaches and key sites on the islands. A memorable week of adventure, drama, and weather. A great first visit to the country of Greece and its islands. Recommend Yiannis as a skipper and guide for your trip.

The kids enjoyed jumping off the boat and even steering.
We made it back safely and happily to Paros today. Yianni showed us secluded beaches, surprising chortas and agreed to take us to santorini even though he hates sailing there! The kids enjoyed jumping off the boat and even steering it on occasion. It’s a beautiful part of the world and we’d definitely recommend exploring it.

Yannis is a superb captain
First and foremost, Yannis is a superb captain. He is a true professional and puts the comfort and safety of the guests first. We had a superb week and thanks to the knowledge of Yannis we visited hidden beaches and places that were sublime. Yannis is passionate about sailing, and we all improved our sailing skills and learned about sailing this magical part of the world.
We cannot wait to return and know that Captain Yannis is our go-to Greek master of the seas.”

The best tavernas for dining and the most interesting places to visit.
My friends and I had a terrific sailing trip with Cpt. Yiannis. We sailed islands from Athens to Milos for a week. [...] Captain Yiannis was not only an outstanding skipper, but he also is a very knowledgeable tour guide. [...] Also, he had tremendous knowledge of any island we stopped on the way and recommended the best tavernas for dining and the most interesting places to visit.
The captain was very professional and sailed extremely safe and responsible. Great guy, a great captain, thank you, Captain Yiannis!

Yannis gave us the ideal family yacht
We had a wonderful week of sailing in the Saronic Gulf end of August. Yannis gave us the ideal family yacht for this bareboat charter trip . Together with the charter company we felt us in very good hands, for all questions we had. Except in this year 2020, with these special conditions!
Thanks Yiannis.

Greek Sails is one of the longest-established sailing holiday businesses in Greece being founded in 1983, the very early days of sailing charter holidays. But we don’t simply have over 30 years’ experience; we are also very proud that our customers have been kind enough to award us ‘5 out of 5’ (excellent) on TripAdvisor with their reviews of their sailing holidays with us: ” ” ” ” ” ” ” ”, and ” ...are just some of the kind comments. You can read the reviews in full on our ‘ ’ page or at . Let us welcome you to Poros and sailing with us. We hope that we can provide you a sailing holiday experience to match any of the reviews our customers have been kind enough to offer us. We provide a wide range of yacht charter & sailing holiday options and are always happy to discuss any specific requirements you may have.
Check our sailing holidays ‘Offers’ page for any special holiday or charter prices. And if you want to be kept informed of our sailing holiday offers, sign-up for our ‘ Sailing holiday offers ’ newsletter to receive information direct to your mailbox. If you just want to get a flavour of Greek Sails, then ‘Like’ us on Facebook to receive news from sunny Poros. Flotilla holidays & yacht charters from Poros, GreeceWhatever type of sailing holiday or yacht charter you opt for, Poros is the ideal starting point. A quiet quay with local eating establishments, traditional fishermen as your neighbours, the occasional ferry and easy access to your chosen sailing area and Athens airport. Spare yourself the nightmare of starting your sailing holiday from one of Athens’ noisy coastal ports such as Kalamaki or Lavrio. Enjoy the beginning and end of your sailing holiday by wandering the quayside restaurants & bars of Poros or shopping in the winding streets. You even save yourself the long beat back north to an Athens base against the Meltemi . In Poros, your sailing holiday starts the moment you step off the ferry. Rod Heikell’s West Aegean pilot guide describes Poros by saying; “The approach to the town is one of the most attractive in Greece...” and goes on, “...it has something else other than the appearance of a little Greek Venice, it has a sensuality, a calm, and what can only be described as a conviviality...” . But Rod Heikell is not alone, Lawrence Durrell , described it as “the happiest place I have ever known” and in her “Greek Odyssey” television series, Joanna Lumley reveals how her love affair with Greece started with a chance visit to Poros; “It was just enchanting...the best holiday ever” . What better place to start and end your sailing holiday! Whichever way you look at it, Poros is a great place to start and end your sailing holiday and well worth the extra hour of travel. Greek Sails are also the only yacht charter company in Poros, so if you are being offered a sailing holiday with a “Saronic fleet” and from a Poros base, it will be with us; there is no other yacht base here.
Sailing QualificationsTo skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18. The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC. For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence . RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey . For Seychelles, the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter. For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience. For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory. If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ? Sailing LevelsWinds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Greece Yacht ChartersGreece is a country in Southeast Europe, which is located in the Balkans. The country is embossed in four seas: the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Cretan Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea . Due to its advantageous location, Greece possesses one of the longest coastlines in the world. This outstanding feature makes the country an incredibly famous sailing destination. Beautiful golden beaches along the island, emerald transparent waters, pine forests in the mountains, and extremely pleasant weather will not leave any sailor indifferent. Deciding to charter a shining yacht, you make an investment in unforgettable memories and the desire to come back as a matter of course. The reasons for which one must visit Greece are difficult to count as it has a lot to offer for everyone. Rich history, glorious past, impressive ancient buildings, delicious food and wine, an abundance of celebrations and festivals are waiting for you to explore the picturesque region. The pristine nature of Athens, Volos, Corfu, Kavala, and other Greek cities and perfect weather conditions create an ideal opportunity to rent a boat and melt into the pleasure. Sailing Conditions in GreeceBeing situated in Southeast Europe, Greece welcomes sailors from around the globe to feel all the benefits of the Mediterranean climate. Hot and dry summers with rare precipitation and clear skies provide a good opportunity for yacht rental without any fear of possible rains and extreme winds. The average temperature during the summer period never drops below 20 ºC even at night. It is impossible to miss such great weather and not to go far in the sea on your sailboat to enjoy the 30 ºC heat in the daytime. Greek winters are usually colder, especially in those areas that are close to mountains. But they are not lingering and not so cold to somehow disturb dedicated sailors. The sailing season usually starts in March and continues up to November, bringing different sailing conditions to the island. Best Times for Vacation in GreeceHaving an intention to make the most of your sailboat vacation in the breathtaking destination, it is necessary to get acquainted with the weather conditions of the desired period. As a rule, the peak season of sailing occurs in the summer months and up to the end of September . This time features extremely high air and water temperature and a huge number of sailors even in the remote marinas. By the way, Greek summers are an ideal time for those who are ready to forget about sleep and party the whole night. One of the most important things to consider is that in July, the northern wind Meltemi comes to the shore and creates many hazardous obstacles for sailing. Spring and autumn wind speeds and summer conditions force you to choose this time period if you are looking for peace and quiet. There is no extreme heat and strong winds, as well as no abundance of people. You still can enjoy going bareboat without any unpleasant conditions and immerse yourself into the same active and loud festivals and celebrations. Sailing Difficulty LevelGreece has already gained its high popularity as one of the world’s best sailing destinations . Because of its climate and location, the country represents great sailing options for beginners and professional sailors alike. The weather changes require sailors to explore the weather forecast beforehand to select the desired time for coming and know what to expect. The level of difficulty is mostly predetermined by the Meltemi wind of 6-8 force. Blowing from July to September may scary fresh sailors and even become a challenge for experienced professionals. If you are not highly skillful and just do not have enough confidence to manage the vessel by yourself, consider booking a boat in spring or autumn. The absence of powerful winds will not spoil your first sailing experience but contribute to positive impressions. If you are still not ready to face the open water, 12 Knots is glad to provide you with the help of a qualified skipper and an opportunity to hire a crew . Being focused on the needs and desires of every sailor, we offer either a skipper to help to refresh the memories of handling a boat or a complete training process in our sailing school. Both options are delivered at their best quality and reasonable price. Main Charter BasesGreece is an incredibly important sailing destination for 12 Knots. Welcoming thousands of happy sailors every year, the country has a lot of well-equipped marinas and good mooring options. Depending on the desired part of the country, preferred city, and climate peculiarities, you may select a perfect one. The team of 12 Knots spreads their professional services on more than 30 bases along the coast. You may rent a yacht or boat at bases situated in the most famous Greek cities and islands:
Boat Types for ChartersHaving a great number of bases in possession, 12 Knots aims to provide sailors with powerful sailboats from leading manufacturers. Approximately 6,000 vessels are now available for charter in Greece. Sailing yachts, catamarans, powerboats, gulets, and houseboats are waiting for your booking. Do not hesitate and contact our team to become an owner of a white shining boat at a good cost. It is advisable to perform booking beforehand to avoid disappointment and misunderstanding. The fee per day is generally 10 euro less than the skipper’s and you need to provide berth and meals as for the skipper. We are frequent charterers and have sailed in the Med for the past 43 year. I have not only chartered but for many years ran the operations of a major charter company. I can safely say that it is not very often that one comes across a charter company as efficient and flexible as SEVEN Sailing .Spiros and his team were quite outstanding and nothing was too much trouble. Changes of charter dates, plans and island excursions were all handled swiftly and with courtesy. There is a lot to be said for using a company where the owners are hands on – something the mega charter companies lose with size. The boat was in excellent condition for age and we had no problems with her whatsoever. We have no hesitation in recommending Spiros and SEVEN Sailing. Thank you for arranging a flotilla holiday that met all expectations and that will be fondly remembered. An efficient and personal service that resulted in a wonderful week of sailing in the Ionian. Good organisation and communication along with glorious conditions ensured our family flotilla experience was a big success. Our thanks to Spiros for arranging everything for us. I would like to inform our satisfaction about the week we spended with catamaran odysseas. Yacht Charter GreeceWhy go sailing in greece. Charter a yacht in Greece and experience a sea of opportunities, escape reality by sailing among thousands of beautiful and easily accessible Greek islands in a pleasant Mediterranean climate. With so many locations worth discovering, it is no wonder that a yacht charter in Greece is the first choice for sailing the Mediterranean. The country has around 3,000 islands, which is the most of all countries in the Mediterranean Sea. Hop aboard your rental yacht in Greece and sail to the most popular yachting destination - the Ionian Islands . Visit Faneromeni Monastery on Lefkada and discover local gastronomy on Corfu with a shot of strong ouzo and a plate of olives with cheese. Decide between a bareboat or a skippered yacht charter in Greece and sail to the vibrant island of Zakynthos or to Mykonos , “the island of the winds”. Enjoy mineral baths , lively nightlife and meet tourists from all around the world. Walk around Ithaca , the home of Odysseus and the setting of thousand-year-old myths. Choose Your Perfect Boat in GreeceSailing Conditions in GreeceThe sailing season in Greece lasts from April to November and is like other Mediterranean countries. The peak/ high season lasts from the last week in June until the middle of September . During this time, you can expect crowded marinas and ports, and many day-tripper motorboats that occupy numerous port moorings on islands, so be prepared for occasional anchoring while yachting in Greece. The best time to sail is in the shoulder seasons , in June and from the second week in September . You can enjoy the milder days of summer and at reasonable prices. There are also regional differences in the season due to the size of Greece; for example, summer and shoulder seasons are longer in the south of the Aegean islands where swimming is also possible in December. The climate in Greece is affected by the Mediterranean, and less protected by the Azores High. This guarantees long summers for a sun filled yacht charter in Greece . The weather is characterized by damp, mild winters , while summers can be very hot and dry , with a lot of sun and temperatures up to 35 °C . After a long summer period, at the end of October, the weather begins to be more unstable because of the decreasing Azores High, and the mixture of the cold and stifling air masses can cause thunderstorms. The more south you sail, the more sun you will have on your yacht charter in Greece. For example, the region of Crete counts 300 sunny days (3,000 sunny hours) a year, and other islands like Rhodes or Thira (Santorini) have a similar number of sunny days. This value counts among the highest in Europe. The temperatures can reach high levels fast, but humidity stays around a comfortable 50%, and the air is sometimes dry. Winds in Greece are known to be very changeable , especially in winter months, where high and low-pressure differences (fields) are dominating. In the months from mid-October to mid-June, the wind changes direction and strength quite often. During summer, a barometer is not a good indicator to predict the weather since it never goes over 10 hPa. There is also a rule of 3-4 days that means the wind will change its direction from north to south and back every 3-4 days. The most relevant wind is the Meltemi which is dominating from the end of June till the beginning of September, coinciding with Greece yacht rental season. The meltemi blows up to 8 Beaufort and brings cold and dry air with humidity of 50-70 %, making summer temperatures very pleasant. The meltemi declines in the morning and evening and reaches its strength during sunny hours. After its decline, it could be possible that the coast gets weak south winds between 1-3 Beaufort. It is useful to set a second anchor then. Be sure to take into consideration the meltemi when planning your itinerary aboard a yacht in Greece. Greece can be divided into five wind zones . The winds of each zone are blowing sometimes independently, but not so if the meltemi gets strong, then you will have similar wind directions everywhere. The Ionian Sea and islands are dominated by northwest winds which start blowing in the late midmornings and decline in the evening. The coast around Peloponnese is dominated by west winds which can reach up to 6 Beaufort, and sometimes south winds ( scirocco ) as well. All the other regions near the coast can expect north-dominated winds because of the land masses. Keep in mind there are gusts of winds blowing between and behind isles with high mountains. The differences between the gusts and distant sea winds can be noticeable. The tide differences are practically negligible, which causes relaxed embarkation from ports. The highest values are measured around the coast of Attica (0.7 m). Important Info for Sailing in GreeceBest time to sail. If you are sailing in Greece from May to October, don’t miss the famous Athens Epidaurus Festival where you can enjoy the traditional bouzouki music or even learn a folk dance! Spending your sailing holidays in Greece means exploring old mythological places – in the Ionian islands, Corfu Island is known in mythology as Scheria, Odysseus’s last stop before his return to Ithaca. You can witness some of the history in Kassiopi Village before having fun at popular beaches like Marathiá, Gardénos or Íssos on your Greek sailing charter. For all those adrenaline addicts, there are a lot of activities you can find on Kos , from windsurfing, paragliding, parascending, water skiing, canoeing, and much more. Drop your anchor in Mandraki Marina , where once the mighty Colossus of Rhodes , one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, guarded the entrance to the port. Before heading back to your yacht rental, take a walk among the ruins dating back to the time of the Trojan War or go on a popular medieval segway tour ride to discover the Street of Knights. There are a wealth of places in Greece to discover on a yacht charter, from iconic islands like Santorini to lesser-visited petite islands and exploring the coast of the mainland. On a Greek yacht charter, you can find yourself the sole vessel moored in front of a quiet beach you can only reach by boat, dance the day away at a Mykonos beach club or visit historic archaeological sites. No matter your interests, stepping on board a private yacht in the Greek islands can take you there. The Cyclades IslandsFrom the clifftop views of Santorini to the boho-chic atmosphere on Mykonos, the Cyclades stand out among the best places to charter in Greece. But even beyond these iconic locales, there are a plethora of smaller isles that deserve your time and are easy to visit on a Cyclades island yacht charter. With soul-stirring sunsets, black-sand volcanic beaches, historical sites and photo-worthy vistas, Santorini is one of the most sought after islands in the Cyclades. Mykonos is a favourite as well, thanks to its vibrant nightlife (and daytime) party scene, high-end restaurants and beautiful anchorages framed by perfect beaches. Other islands not to miss in the Cyclades include Paros, which has charming villages and the ideal conditions for windsurfing or kitesurfing. Milos is famed for its dramatic landscape, highlighted by caves and cliffs which can be explored by boat. Of course, Greece is also renowned for its dining, and on the laidback island of Sifnos you can sample octopus bruschetta and grilled squid at its seaside tavernas. The Saronic IslandsSailing in Greece from Athens to the Saronic islands is such a quick jaunt that it ’ s no wonder that many escape the capital city to visit. The Saronic Islands and surrounding coastline are home to many second homes for Athenians, such as the island of Septses , where you ’ ll find plenty of luxe boutiques, art galleries and fine dining eateries. The island ’ s grand mansions and horse-drawn carriages add a touch of elegance . Meanwhile, the nearby island of Hydra is totally devoid of cars and exudes an old world charm — not to mention unparalleled sunset views from its hillside bars overlooking the sea. Hydra has long been known as an artist ’ s haven, attracting everyone from Jeff Koons to Henry Miller, and this bohemian, artsy vibe is still felt. About an hour from Athens, Poros combines lush pine forests with a vibrant waterfront dotted with neoclassical architecture, upscale cafes and boutiques. Poros actually consists of two islands, Sphairia and Kalaureia , which are connected by a small bridge. The island is also home to historical sites like the Temple of Poseidon — dating back to 520 BC, the temple offers a glimpse into the island's rich history. A more modern landmark is the clock tower, built in 1927, that watches over Poros town. Poros offers a winning blend of natural beauty, historical significance and a laidback atmosphere, perfect for a luxurious destination when embarking on a sailing Greek yacht charter. The Dodecanese IslandsFurther away from mainland Greece are the Dodecanese Islands, which are actually closer to the coast of Turkey than Athens. The archipelago has 15 larger islands and another 150 smaller islands. Larger islands in the chain include Kos, Patmos and Rhodes, to name a few. There ’ s also the chance to combine a visit here with a cruise along Turkey ’ s stunning coastline. Rhodes, LindosWith 300 days of sunshine per year, the island of Rhodes welcomes more sunshine than any other Greek island. But it’s more than the sunny weather that makes Rhodes an ideal Greek yacht charter destination. The largest of the Dodecanese Islands, Rhodes boasts a winning blend of ancient history, cosmopolitan charm, and natural beauty. There are quite a few sites of historical significance to be found on the island, such as the Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes Old Town, which now houses a museum. In the picturesque village of Lindos on Rhodes, an enormous castle-like structure known as the Acropolis of Lindos is perched atop a steep cliff, showcasing sweeping views of the surrounding sea and the village below. Lindos village itself is a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets that are bursting with traditional tavernas and chic boutiques, while the long, sandy strip of Lindos’s main beach is ideal for families with its calm and shallow water. Set in the northeast of the Aegean Sea, Samos is a bewitching island home to ancient architecture, serene beaches and a bustling harbour . The old port town of Pythagoreion is winning of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, thanks to its fortified walls that protect the port. History buffs will also enjoy exploring the Tunnel of Eupalinos , a n ancient aqueduct built in the 6th century BC, considered an engineering marvel of its time and the well-preserved Roman baths, a nod to when Rome ruled this island. Nature lovers will want to hike up to the Potami waterfalls or swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lemonakia beach. Samos is famous for its muscat wine, so wine aficionados will want to make to visit the Samos Wine Museum in Malagari to learn about — and sample — the island ’ s local wines. Charter yacht guests can also experience local festivals, including the Fishermen Festival in June and the Samos Wine Festival taking place later in the summer. The Ionian IslandsLocated off the west coast of mainland Greece, the Ionian Islands comprise seven main islands: Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Lefkada , Ithaca, Paxos, and Kythira. These serene cruising grounds are a popular spot for sailing Greece on a yacht charter, island-hopping along the way. The islands here are known for their verdant landscapes, beautiful beaches, and charming village s. Corfu is a longtime getaway of the British elite, with a gorgeous stretch of coastline that one might mistake for the French Riviera with mansions dotting the shoreline and hillsides. Then on the island of Ithaca, you can step back into the time of Greek mythology on the mythical home of Odysseus and even visit the Cave of the Nymphs, a mythological site associated with Homer ’ s Odyssey. Kefalonia, AssosOn the largest of the Ionian islands, Assos is a small, idyllic village is set on a narrow isthmus that connects to a rocky peninsula, surrounded by the azure waters of the Ionian Sea. With buildings painted in bright pastel colours, balconies draped in bright bougainvillea flowers, and narrow cobbled streets, it can easily be argued that this is one of the most charming villages in all of the Ionian islands. Adding to this level of beauty is the ruins of the Assos Castle, set on a hillside overlooking the village. A hike up to the 16th century Venetian-built castle will reward you with views of the town and sparkling sea beyond. The largest of all the Greek islands, Crete is known for its diverse terrain, from rugged mountains to pristine beaches, its charming towns and luxurious accommodations ashore. In Chania old town, on the northwest corner of the island, you can wander through narrow alleys lined with Venetian and Ottoman architecture that’s brimming with boutiques and welcoming tavernas. This side of Crete is also home to many wow-worthy beaches where you can drop anchor and enjoy an al fresco meal taking in the views. Step ashore in Elafonissi Beach — known for its pink sand and clear turquoise waters, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Hikers will enjoy a ramble up to dramatic sights of Samaria Gorge. On the eastern end of the island, mountainous vistas seem to tumble into the sea. Cruise into the protected harbour of Elounda, which hosts upscale hotels and exclusive villas on shore, and visit Vai Beach, famous for its palm forest, the largest in Europe, and a beautiful sandy beach. The Peloponnese PeninsulaThe Peloponnese Peninsula, located in southern Greece, is a region rich in history, natural beauty and cultural heritage. On a Greek yacht charter around the Peloponnese Peninsula , you can step onshore to visit ancient sites and medieval towns. A few not-to-miss historical sites here include Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, where you can see the ancient stadium and learn about its history in an excellent archaeological museum. The ruins of Epidaurus are renown for ancient theater with exceptional acoustics, which is still used for performances today, and the Sanctuary of Asclepius. A charming seaport town with neoclassical architecture, the Palamidi Fortress, and the Bourtzi Castle on an islet in the harbour, Nafplio is an ideal base for a luxurious yacht charter. Known for its beautiful harbour lined with elegant buildings, waterfront eateries and charming old town, it’s a winning port of call during a Greek yacht charter. From Nafplio, you can easily reach beautiful nearby islands and coastal areas such as Spetses, Hydra and the Argolic Gulf’s hidden coves and beaches. The Sporades IslandsLocated in the northwest Aegean Sea, the Sporades Islands are a group of lush, green islands known for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters and quaint villages. The main islands in the Sporades include Skiathos, Skopelos , Alonissos and Skyros. The island of Skopelos is somewhat famous as being one of the main filming locations for the film Mamma Mia! starring Meryl Streep. Skopelos is renowned for its lush pine forests, beautiful beaches and scenic landscapes , and its wealth of natural beauty was showcased in the movie . The nearby island of Alonissos is home to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades, a protected area known for its rich marine life, including the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. Fittingly, the island offers excellent diving opportunities, including numerous underwater caves and shipwrecks. Skiathos boasts more than 60 stunning beaches, including the famous Koukounaries Beach with its golden sand and turquoise waters. The island of Skyros is known for its rich cultural heritage, traditional crafts and the famous Skyrian ponies. Don't forget Mainland GreeceWhile the many island chains of Greece can steal the limelight, one should not overlook the charms of mainland Greece. Most Greek yacht rentals will include a visit to Athens. The capital of Greece is steeped in history and feels a bit like an open air museum with ancient landmarks are on display. Visit the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to see iconic structures like the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea. Stroll through Plaka, the picturesque old neighbourhood of Athens. And indulge in Greek cuisine at one of the many rooftop eateries that overlooks the city, with views of the Acropolis lit up in the background at night. Other places on mainland Greece well worth the visit include the coast of Parga, located on the northwestern corner of the country, which stands out for its hillside monastery, postcard-perfect harbour and long stretches of beach.
