Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

When you select from our yachts for rent, keep in mind that you have to provide a cabin or berth in cabin for your skipper as he is obliged to sleep on board. Apart from the skipper’s fee, you have to also provide his meals either from the meals you prepare on board or at an eating place ashore. The skipper’s fee, regardless of the season and the people on board, is €140 to €190 depending on the yacht rental. You may wish to hire also a cook/hostess. The fee per day is generally 10 euro less than the skipper’s and you need to provide berth and meals as for the skipper. The running expenses for a skippered yacht charter are just like those of a bareboat charter (fuel, gas, water, meals, port/marina fees, etc.), plus the costs for the hired crew as above. Although some of our yacht rentals are offered only skippered (yacht charter prices include skipper’s fee), you may choose any of our bareboat charter yachts fitting your needs and let us know if you wish to have a skipper (select the check-box on the form of the yacht rental booking request).

We are frequent charterers and have sailed in the Med for the past 43 year. I have not only chartered but for many years ran the operations of a major charter company. I can safely say that it is not very often that one comes across a charter company as efficient and flexible as SEVEN Sailing .Spiros and his team were quite outstanding and nothing was too much trouble. Changes of charter dates, plans and island excursions were all handled swiftly and with courtesy. There is a lot to be said for using a company where the owners are hands on – something the mega charter companies lose with size. The boat was in excellent condition for age and we had no problems with her whatsoever. We have no hesitation in recommending Spiros and SEVEN Sailing.

Thank you for arranging a flotilla holiday that met all expectations and that will be fondly remembered. An efficient and personal service that resulted in a wonderful week of sailing in the Ionian. Good organisation and communication along with glorious conditions ensured our family flotilla experience was a big success. Our thanks to Spiros for arranging everything for us.

Unica piccola pecca era il fatto che parlasse solo inglese e quindi le nostre figlie hanno potuto interagire con lui molto poco. Bellissime veleggiate e barca ben attrezzata. Ottima comunicazione con Spiros che ha organizzato tutto egregiamente, dall\\\’aeroporto in poi. Un sogno!!

Mon épouse, moi même et nos deux filles de 8 et 10 ans Nous étions en vacances dans les îles Ionniennes et la vue répétée des bateaux naviguant sur les eaux turquoises nous a donné envie de tenter l’aventure. Semana inolvidable, lugares maravillosos que pudimos conocer también gracias a el skipper que nos dieron (un muchacho inglés que trabaja hace años en esa zona y conoce cada uno de sus paradisiacos rincones) el cual entendiò enseguida el tipo de experiencia que buscavamos, mas intima y menos comercial. La unica pena era que hablaba solo en inglés asì que mis hijas pudieron conversar muy poco con el. Hermosas navegaciòn y barco a vela muy comodo. Optima comunicacion con Spiros que ha organizado todo perfectamente, desde el aeropuerto en adelante. Un sueño!

Option gives you the opportunity to reserve provisionally the boat for 3-5 days without any payment. Once you make your travel arrangement etc you can come back to the site to confirm the charter or you email us to finalize the booking.

If you accept our offer we will send you a confirmation with Bank details for the first payment in order to fiianly secure the boat.

We will need the following documents prior to your charter:

*Copy of your passport

*Copy of your sailing certificate

*Crew list with passport Number, Telephone and Nationality

*Arrival details

Payment Terms:

Once you confirm your charter you will receive from us our own confirmation with all the details of payment and Bank details.

1st Payment: 50% of the charter amount within 7 days from confirmation

2nd Payment: 30 days prior to the start of the charter

Payments to the base prior to boarding:

Security deposit: Paid by Credit card. This is an authorization (No money transaction) and refundable at the end of the charter if no damage occured.

Damage waiver: If choosen instead of the Refundable deposit it must be arrainged at least 30 days before the charter.

Extras: All extras will be paid to the base in cash only and must be choosen in advance as they might not be available the day of the charter.

Upon receiving our confirmation of booking a deposit payment should be made within 7 days to secure the charter. The balance should be paid at least 30 days before the charter.

Your booking will automatically lapse if payment is not received.

All payments should be made by Bank transfer into our Account. Details of the bank account and due date will be on the confirmation invoice.

• Cancellations

Cancellations over 90 days prior to the charter : 30% of the total charter fee.

Cancellations between 90 days and 30 days prior to the charter: 50% of the total charter fee.

Cancellations under 30 days prior to the charter: Total payment will be retained.

• Refundable security deposit.

To cover loss or damage to the yacht and/or her equipment a refundable security deposit is required. This is normally payable on embarkation either by Credit card or cash and will be refunded in full (providing no damage) on the return of the yacht. This item is shown separately on your confirmation invoice.

3.1. Damage waiver

Some times the charter company/owner offer Damage waiver insurance in place of a refundable deposit which is also mentioned on the confirmation invoice. With damage waiver you pay a small amount in cash which is not refundable and also a small refundable by credit card. Damage waiver has to be aranged prior to the charter and not the last minute at the base.

• Skipper’s Competence Certificate

For bareboat yacht charter at least one member of the party must produce evidence as to their competence to skipper the yacht. IMPORTANT: You must bring along your original skipper’s sailing certificate.

Should this not be forthcoming or should the base feel the safety of the yacht is in question the company reserves the right to allocate a skipper to the yacht and charge as per the current price list.

Clients are responsible for making their own way to the base. Details are provided.

If required we can arrange a taxi transfer from the airport to the marina. Cost of transfer to be advised.

• Charter times.

Normally the boats are available for boarding (Check In) at 17.00. In some cases if the boat is ready boarding can be done early. Always call the base immediately you arrive to find the time of boarding.

Disembarkation at 09.00 . You are required to arrive at the base at 17.00 or 18.00 the day before in order to have time to fill the boat with diesel and do the check out.

• Charter Party Contract.

A charter Party Contract has to be completed and signed by you prior to the charter. If you require a copy it can be sent to you.

• Yacht availability.

We reserve the right that should the yacht booked become unavoidably unobtainable it can be replaced with a similar sized yacht or alternatively a full refund of all monies paid for the original yacht.

The sailing season in Greece lasts from April to November and is like other Mediterranean countries. The peak/ high season lasts from the last week in June until the middle of September . During this time, you can expect crowded marinas and ports, and many day-tripper motorboats that occupy numerous port moorings on islands, so be prepared for occasional anchoring while yachting in Greece.

The best time to sail is in the shoulder seasons , in June and from the second week in September . You can enjoy the milder days of summer and at reasonable prices. There are also regional differences in the season due to the size of Greece; for example, summer and shoulder seasons are longer in the south of the Aegean islands where swimming is also possible in December. 

The climate in Greece is affected by the Mediterranean, and less protected by the Azores High. This guarantees long summers for a sun filled yacht charter in Greece . The weather is characterized by damp, mild winters , while summers can be very hot and dry , with a lot of sun and temperatures up to 35 °C . After a long summer period, at the end of October, the weather begins to be more unstable because of the decreasing Azores High, and the mixture of the cold and stifling air masses can cause thunderstorms. 

The more south you sail, the more sun you will have on your yacht charter in Greece. For example, the region of Crete counts 300 sunny days (3,000 sunny hours) a year, and other islands like Rhodes or Thira (Santorini) have a similar number of sunny days. This value counts among the highest in Europe. The temperatures can reach high levels fast, but humidity stays around a comfortable 50%, and the air is sometimes dry.

Winds and tides.

Winds in Greece are known to be very changeable , especially in winter months, where high and low-pressure differences (fields) are dominating. In the months from mid-October to mid-June, the wind changes direction and strength quite often. During summer, a barometer is not a good indicator to predict the weather since it never goes over 10 hPa. There is also a rule of 3-4 days that means the wind will change its direction from north to south and back every 3-4 days.

The most relevant wind is the Meltemi which is dominating from the end of June till the beginning of September, coinciding with Greece yacht rental season. The meltemi blows up to 8 Beaufort and brings cold and dry air with humidity of 50-70 %, making summer temperatures very pleasant. The meltemi declines in the morning and evening and reaches its strength during sunny hours. After its decline, it could be possible that the coast gets weak south winds between 1-3 Beaufort. It is useful to set a second anchor then. Be sure to take into consideration the meltemi when planning your itinerary aboard a yacht in Greece.

Greece can be divided into five wind zones . The winds of each zone are blowing sometimes independently, but not so if the meltemi gets strong, then you will have similar wind directions everywhere. The Ionian Sea and islands are dominated by northwest winds which start blowing in the late midmornings and decline in the evening. The coast around Peloponnese is dominated by west winds which can reach up to 6 Beaufort, and sometimes south winds ( scirocco ) as well. All the other regions near the coast can expect north-dominated winds because of the land masses. Keep in mind there are gusts of winds blowing between and behind isles with high mountains. The differences between the gusts and distant sea winds can be noticeable. 

The tide differences are practically negligible, which causes relaxed embarkation from ports. The highest values are measured around the coast of Attica (0.7 m).

Before heading back to your yacht rental, take a walk among the ruins dating back to the time of the Trojan War or go on a popular medieval segway tour ride to discover the Street of Knights. In fact, the entire Medieval City of Rhodes is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List .

From the clifftop views of Santorini to the boho-chic atmosphere on Mykonos, the Cyclades stand out among the best places to charter in Greece. But even beyond these iconic locales, there are a plethora of smaller isles that deserve your time and are easy to visit on a Cyclades island yacht charter.

With soul-stirring sunsets, black-sand volcanic beaches, historical sites and photo-worthy vistas, Santorini is one of the most sought after islands in the Cyclades. Mykonos is a favourite as well, thanks to its vibrant nightlife (and daytime) party scene, high-end restaurants and beautiful anchorages framed by perfect beaches.

Other islands not to miss in the Cyclades include Paros, which has charming villages and the ideal conditions for windsurfing or kitesurfing. Milos is famed for its dramatic landscape, highlighted by caves and cliffs which can be explored by boat. Of course, Greece is also renowned for its dining, and on the laidback island of Sifnos you can sample octopus bruschetta and grilled squid at its seaside tavernas.

The Saronic Islands

Sailing in Greece from Athens to the Saronic islands is such a quick jaunt that  it ’ s  no wonder that many escape the capital city to visit. The Saronic Islands and surrounding coastline are  home to many second homes for Athenians, such as the island of  Septses , where  you ’ ll  find plenty of luxe boutiques, art galleries and fine dining eateries.  The island ’ s grand mansions and horse-drawn carriages add a touch of elegance .

Meanwhile, the nearby island of Hydra is  totally devoid  of cars and exudes an  old world  charm  —  not to mention unparalleled sunset views from its hillside bars overlooking the sea. Hydra has long been known as an artist ’ s haven, attracting everyone from Jeff Koons to Henry Miller, and this bohemian, artsy vibe is still felt.

About an hour from Athens,  Poros combines lush pine forests with a vibrant waterfront dotted with  neoclassical architecture,  upscale  cafes  and boutiques. Poros actually consists of two islands,  Sphairia  and  Kalaureia ,  which are  connected by a small bridge. The island is also home to historical sites like the Temple of Poseidon  —  dating back to 520 BC, the temple offers a glimpse into the island's rich history.

A more modern landmark is the clock tower, built in 1927, that watches over  Poros town. Poros offers a  winning  blend of natural beauty, historical significance  and a laidback atmosphere, perfect for a luxurious destination  when embarking on a sailing Greek yacht charter.

The Dodecanese Islands

Further away from mainland Greece  are  the Dodecanese Islands, which are  actually closer  to the coast of  Turkey  than Athens. The archipelago has 15 larger islands and another 150 smaller islands. Larger islands in the chain include Kos,  Patmos  and Rhodes, to name a few.  There ’ s  also the chance to combine a visit here with a cruise along  Turkey ’ s  stunning coastline.

Rhodes, Lindos

With 300 days of sunshine per year, the island of Rhodes welcomes more sunshine than any other Greek island. But it’s more than the sunny weather that makes Rhodes an ideal Greek yacht charter destination. The largest of the Dodecanese Islands, Rhodes boasts a winning blend of ancient history, cosmopolitan charm, and natural beauty.

There are quite a few sites of historical significance to be found on the island, such as the Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes Old Town, which now houses a museum. In the picturesque village of Lindos on Rhodes, an enormous castle-like structure known as the Acropolis of Lindos is perched atop a steep cliff, showcasing sweeping views of the surrounding sea and the village below.

Lindos village itself is a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets that are bursting with traditional tavernas and chic boutiques, while the long, sandy strip of Lindos’s main beach is ideal for families with its calm and shallow water.

Set in the northeast of the Aegean Sea, Samos is a bewitching island home to ancient architecture, serene  beaches  and a bustling  harbour . The old port town of Pythagoreion is  winning of  the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, thanks to its fortified walls that protect the port. History buffs will also enjoy exploring the  Tunnel of  Eupalinos , a n ancient aqueduct built in the 6th century BC, considered an engineering marvel of its time and the well-preserved Roman baths, a nod to when Rome ruled this island.

Nature lovers will want to hike up to the  Potami  waterfalls or swim in the  crystal-clear  waters of  Lemonakia  beach. Samos is famous for its muscat wine, so wine aficionados will  want to make  to visit the Samos Wine Museum in  Malagari  to learn about  —  and sample  —  the island ’ s local wines. Charter yacht guests can also experience local festivals, including the Fishermen Festival in June and the Samos Wine Festival taking place later in the summer.

The Ionian Islands

Located off the west coast of mainland Greece, the  Ionian Islands   comprise  seven main islands: Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia,  Lefkada , Ithaca, Paxos, and Kythira. These  serene cruising grounds are a popular spot for sailing Greece on a yacht charter, island-hopping along the way.  The   islands   here  are known for their verdant landscapes, beautiful beaches, and charming village s.

Corfu is a longtime getaway of the British elite, with a gorgeous stretch of coastline that one might mistake for the French Riviera with mansions dotting the shoreline and hillsides. Then on the island of Ithaca, you can step back into the time of Greek mythology on the mythical home of Odysseus and even visit the Cave of the Nymphs, a  mythological site associated with Homer ’ s Odyssey.

Kefalonia, Assos

On the largest of the Ionian islands, Assos is a small, idyllic village is set on a narrow isthmus that connects to a rocky peninsula, surrounded by the azure waters of the Ionian Sea. With buildings painted in bright pastel colours, balconies draped in bright bougainvillea flowers, and narrow cobbled streets, it can easily be argued that this is one of the most charming villages in all of the Ionian islands. Adding to this level of beauty is the ruins of the Assos Castle, set on a hillside overlooking the village. A hike up to the 16th century Venetian-built castle will reward you with views of the town and sparkling sea beyond.

The largest of all the Greek islands, Crete is known for its diverse terrain, from rugged mountains to pristine beaches, its charming towns and luxurious accommodations ashore. In Chania old town, on the northwest corner of the island, you can wander through narrow alleys lined with Venetian and Ottoman architecture that’s brimming with boutiques and welcoming tavernas.

This side of Crete is also home to many wow-worthy beaches where you can drop anchor and enjoy an al fresco meal taking in the views. Step ashore in Elafonissi Beach — known for its pink sand and clear turquoise waters, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Hikers will enjoy a ramble up to dramatic sights of Samaria Gorge.

On the eastern end of the island, mountainous vistas seem to tumble into the sea. Cruise into the protected harbour of Elounda, which hosts upscale hotels and exclusive villas on shore, and visit Vai Beach, famous for its palm forest, the largest in Europe, and a beautiful sandy beach.

The Peloponnese Peninsula

The Peloponnese Peninsula,  located  in southern Greece, is a region rich in history, natural  beauty  and cultural heritage. On a Greek yacht charter around the Peloponnese   Peninsula , you can step onshore to visit ancient sites and medieval towns. A few not-to-miss historical sites here include Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, where you can see the ancient stadium and learn about its history in an excellent archaeological museum. The ruins of Epidaurus are  renown  for ancient theater with exceptional acoustics, which is still used for performances today, and the Sanctuary of Asclepius.  

A charming seaport town with neoclassical architecture, the Palamidi Fortress, and the Bourtzi Castle on an islet in the harbour, Nafplio is an ideal base for a luxurious yacht charter. Known for its beautiful harbour lined with elegant buildings, waterfront eateries and charming old town, it’s a winning port of call during a Greek yacht charter. From Nafplio, you can easily reach beautiful nearby islands and coastal areas such as Spetses, Hydra and the Argolic Gulf’s hidden coves and beaches.

The Sporades Islands

Located in the northwest Aegean Sea, the Sporades Islands are a group of lush, green islands known for their pristine beaches,  crystal-clear   waters  and quaint villages. The main islands in the Sporades include Skiathos,  Skopelos ,  Alonissos  and Skyros. The island of  Skopelos  is  somewhat famous   as  being one of the main filming locations for the film  Mamma Mia!   starring Meryl Streep.  Skopelos  is renowned for its lush pine forests, beautiful beaches and scenic landscapes , and its wealth of  natural beauty was  showcased  in the movie .

The nearby island of  Alonissos  is home to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern  Sporades, a protected area known for its rich marine life, including the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. Fittingly, the island offers excellent diving opportunities, including  numerous  underwater caves and shipwrecks. Skiathos boasts  more than  60 stunning beaches, including the famous Koukounaries  Beach with its golden sand and turquoise waters.  The island of Skyros  is known for its rich cultural heritage, traditional crafts and the famous Skyrian  ponies.

Don't forget Mainland Greece

While the many island chains of Greece can steal the limelight, one should not overlook the charms of mainland Greece. Most Greek yacht rentals will include a visit to Athens. The capital of Greece is steeped in history and feels a bit like an open air museum with ancient landmarks are on display.

Visit the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to see iconic structures like the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea. Stroll through Plaka, the picturesque old neighbourhood of Athens. And indulge in Greek cuisine at one of the many rooftop eateries that overlooks the city, with views of the Acropolis lit up in the background at night.

Other places on mainland Greece well worth the visit include the coast of Parga, located  on the northwestern corner of the country, which stands out for its hillside monastery, postcard-perfect  harbour  and long stretches of beach.
