RYA Coastal Skipper Theory / Yachtmaster Offshore Theory

  • General Description
  • Important details
  • Enrolment Form

The Caribbean RYA Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster Offshore Theory course is a shorebased course which builds on the knowledge acquired during RYA Day Skipper Theory.

With more advanced navigation theory and exercises of our RYA Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster Offshore Theory course you will become a better skipper and be ready for passagemaking in varied conditions, including tidal knowledge, use of almanacs, collision regulations ( IRPCS or “colregs”), pilotage , and, of course, meteorology (including some live examples if you are in a classroom with us) and safety.

This 40 hour course is followed by three exam papers, and can be taken as a classroom course or as an online course (which we highly recommend)

Upon successful completion of the course, you will obtain the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory Certificate , which will be a basis for your Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster level practical courses and the minimum knowledge required for Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore practical exams.

We suggest that all skippers take the RYA SRC Radio Course , for knowledge and safety. And taking the RYA Diesel Engine course is also a good fit at this time… just in case.

Prerequisites for the RYA Costal Skipper Theory course:

  • RYA Day Skipper Theory

The course exposes concepts such as navigation on nautical and electronic charts, meteorology, tide calculation of primary and secondary ports, safety management, international regulations for preventing collisions (IRPCS) and recognizing lights, lights and sound signals.

At the end of the course a written exam is taken to obtain the certificate. Included in the course fee are the RYA teaching materials package, (Training Charts, Yachtmaster Theory Notes book, educational supplements, and the use of the Tidal Atlas), access to the electronic navigation program, and RYA / MCA certificate issued when passed the final exam.

There is a possibility to do an Online RYA Coastal Skipper Theory / Yachtmaster Offshore Theory course  delivered by Navathome, an RYA recognized Training Centre specialised in online training. Students who successfully complete the online course and pass the Theory exam obtain the  Theory Completion Certificate – ready to come join us onboard!

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore is one of the most highly respected and prestigious sailing qualifications in the world and we pride ourselves on training many high calibre Yachtmaster Candidates. Exam Preparation Courses are delivered by one of our fully qualified and extremely experienced RYA Yachtmaster Instructors.

Please click here to see the progression of RYA Sailing Practical Courses and the recommended path for both theory and practical courses.

We have also put together some details notes on The Yachtmaster exam here.

The week starts with an assessment day, when the instructor will gauge your strengths and weaknesses. The rest of the time will be spent improving weak areas in order to prepare you for the exam. You will take command of the yacht on short passages, by day and night. You will be required to navigate in a seamanlike manner, with both efficiency and safety. Your instructor will give you guidance and coaching on boat handling techniques both at sea and in a confined space.

Examiners expect a high level of expertise, particularly in safety critical exercises such as man overboard, or sailing down wind. Your instructor will also ensure that the theory subjects, in particular meteorology, IRPCS, buoyage and passage planning are not new to you.  At the end of the week, you will be given an honest debrief, leaving you confident in your own ability, taking the exam if you feel ready to do so.

At the end of the preparation course, the instructor will leave the process and an Independent RYA Examiner will come aboard to conduct the exam. Every student will be examined on how they skipper the yacht on short passages and complete various other tasks.

Although this is a sailing exam, you will be expected to be familiar with all the vessels systems which includes knowledge of engines to at least the level of the one-day RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance course .

A knowledge of the operation of radar and GPS is also expected.

The examiner will want to see you dock the boat under engine in a variety of circumstances possibly alongside and stern-to. He/she may set you a challenge to dock in a particular place or ask you to choose. He/she will also expect you to be able to handle and turn the vessel in a confined space with awareness of the effects of the prevailing conditions. You will also be expected to be able to handle the vessel under sail in a confined space and this may include sailing on and/or off a mooring, your anchor or a dock. The examiner is looking for good boat control, use of crew, wind awareness and a good lookout for other vessels in the area. Once at sea it is a legal requirement to keep a log. This doesn’t have to be detailed but the examiner will want to see that you know where you are at all times. Don’t be afraid to reef, we are cruising not racing, but at the same time make sure you have enough sail up to keep the vessel going. Also make sure you have practiced your classic navigation as fixing your position, CTS and EP may all come into the exam. Also be comfortable with tidal problems and operation of the GPS, specifically the one on the exam vessel.

Cost is $1695 plus RYA Exam fee of around $300 [depends on exchange rate]. Please click on the ' Training Dates & Booking ' button on the right to check available dates.

An RYA Offshore certifies an individual as competent to captain a vessel up to 24m in length and no more than 200 Gross Tonnes. The offshore certification is applicable passages during which the yacht is no more than 150 miles from harbour.

The Yacht master offshore consists of two components:

  • Yachtmaster Offshore Theory
  • Yachtmaster Offshore Practical

Both components can be done on an individual basis but in order to achieve a commercial endorsement for the yachtmaster offshore certificate of competency, both the theory and practical examinations must be passed.

RYA Coastal Skipper: The Next Level of Sailing

Advance your coastal skippering and navigation skills.

RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Course | Lesser Antilles

Here we take a closer look at the skills you develop on the RYA Coastal Skipper courses:

The RYA Coastal Skipper practical course allows candidates to develop advanced skippering techniques, and learn how to plan and undertake coastal passages by day and night. Initially building on the skills you learnt on the RYA Day Skipper course , your instructor will guide you towards advanced techniques for boat handling and passage making. Many students feel that this is one of the most highly rewarding courses.

RYA Day Skipper to RYA Coastal Skipper

The RYA Coastal Skipper course advances on from the RYA Day Skipper course by developing higher levels of ability and independence. The shorter passages you were trained to handle on the Day Skipper course are advanced to passages that require watch-keeping routines, crew management, and the ability to pilot a vessel both day and night.

Mile Building Charters in the Caribbean | RYA Coastal Skipper Training

A higher level of overall navigational and pilotage expertise is a must when dealing with longer passages, due to the likelihood of not knowing the area. The instructor works with you on the passage planning process which begins to involve consideration of the requirements for offshore passages. When skippering coastal passages, you often experience a range of weather conditions and are commonly out of sight, and protection, of land.

Bluewater Sailing recommends a hands-on RYA Coastal Skipper practical course over 7 days/6 nights. Your instructor will focus on coaching you up to the next competence level. It is important that you are already comfortable with the boat handling skills taught on the RYA Day Skipper practical course. It is also expected that your theoretical knowledge is equal to the level of the RYA Coastal Skipper/ Yachtmaster shore-based course . This allows you to put the relevant theory into practice while you train with us.

The RYA Coastal Skipper is not a beginners’ course – there are baseline prerequisites which ensure you are ready to enrol. It is required that you have a minimum of: 15 days sea time (2 of these days as skipper), 300 logged miles, and 8 night hours.

Become a Professional – RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence

The RYA Coastal Skipper is also the first level where the option exists to certify your competence as a skipper. Many candidates work towards being examined for the Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence . Successful completion of the RYA Coastal Skipper practical course means you have the knowledge and understanding (although not necessarily the experience) to be examined for the Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence. If you would like to gain more experience, prior to the exam, we recommend joining one of our mile building sailing charters that we run throughout the year. Bluewater Sailing also offers an intensive 4 day preparation course.

The prerequisites for the RYA Yachtmaster™ Coastal exam are: 30 days sea time (including two as skipper), 800 miles, and 12 night hours. If you hold an RYA Coastal Skipper course completion certificate, you have a reduction to a logged sea time of 400 miles and 20 days at sea. The final assessment is carried out by an RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Examiner.

RYA Coastal Skipper Options in Summary

There are two types of coastal certificate:

  • The RYA Coastal Skipper practical course completion certificate. This is awarded by Bluewater Sailing on successful completion of our training course. We offer hands on training, that puts the knowledge into practice that you have learnt on the RYA Coastal Skipper shore based theory course.
  • The Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence. This is awarded by the RYA/MCA on successful completion of an exam. You are not required to have completed the RYA Coastal Skipper practical course prior to this exam, however, it is highly recommended. This is the first level of professional recognition, and if you are thinking of working professionally in the industry, you will also need a commercial endorsement – find out more about this here.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones as part of a development by Laurance Rockefeller, the East Course at TPC Dorado Beach has hosted the World Cup and PGA Tour events.

Courtesy of the club

When architect Robert Trent Jones built the Dorado Beach course in Puerto Rico in the 1950s for developer Laurence Rockefeller, it was a feat of engineering. Jones had to drain swamps, clear mangroves and excavate innumerous tons of rock and earth from the hostile tropical rainforest to lift the course off the jungle floor.

The task was more impressive for the lack quality earthmoving equipment he had at his disposal in the States (this was his first construction job outside the U.S. mainland). But the result was heralded as one of the great resort courses in the world and helped turn golf eyes toward Puerto Rico and the beaches of the Caribbean. Though Puerto Rico trails behind the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Barbados and even Jamaica as the region’s premium golf destination, it retains an important golf culture and iis a popular destination for international players.
