Location in Bizerte: Catana will build more catamarans in Tunisia

Bali catamarans in production in the Tunisian subsidiary Haco of the Catana group

After the takeover of Haco in July 2019, the Catana group acquired a second shipyard in Tunisia. The French catamaran manufacturer is thus securing the industrial resources necessary for its very strong growth, driven by the Bali range.

The Catana group will take control of Magic Yachts

On December 11, 2019, the Catana group announced that it had signed a purchase agreement for the Magic Yachts shipyard . The company founded in Tunisia in 1999 to build the famous luxury boats of the Wally range, was taken over in 2012. Located in Bizerte, it extends over a 30,000 m² plot of land. The production buildings offer a surface area of 10,000 m² for the manufacture of boats. The agreement provides for the entry of the Catana group, through its Tunisian subsidiary Haco, with a 75% stake in Magic Yachts. It will be effective by the end of March 2020 at the latest. Francesco Campana, manager of the site, remains in the company.

Catana favours Tunisia at Canet-en-Roussillon to produce its catamarans

The announcement of the acquisition of Magic Yachts is part of the Catana Group's growing presence in Tunisia. It began with the purchase, in August 2017, of 30% of the capital of the subcontractor Haco, based in the Gulf of Tunis. In July 2019, the French catamaran manufacturer took control of the company, increasing its stake to 50%. A 16,000 m² expansion of the site was announced at that time. While the Catana group announced in spring 2019 its intention to open a 2nd factory in its fiefdom of Canet-en-Roussillon, it is now highlighting an increase in taxation , excessively long delays and local recruitment problems to justify abandoning this project, favouring the purchase of Magic Yachts.

Strong growth for Bali Catamarans

While Haco already represents 20% of the Catana group's production, the French manufacturer is counting on its new Tunisian location to absorb the strong growth in the order book, driven by the Bali brand. The group's overall turnover increased by 42% in 2018/2019, reaching 74.4 million euros. Its operating income reached 10% of its turnover, while the net income was ?9 million. Growth prospects remain strong. The order book reached ?125 million.

Catana C70

Tunisia - Catana Group acquires the legendary Magic Yachts shipyard

December 11 2019

Written by Yachting Art Magazine English Edition

Catana Group, the world's third largest catamaran manufacturer, is strengthening its industrial organization by acquiring Magic Yachts, a shipyard located in Bizerte, Tunisia, founded in 1999 by Wally and specialized in yacht construction.

Tunisia - Catana Group acquires the legendary Magic Yachts shipyard

As the Paris 2019 Nautic is in full swing, the surprise came this morning with the announcement by Catana Group, manufacturer of the Bali and Catana catamarans, of the takeover of Magic Yachts.

This acquisition comes for the French group after 5 years of average annual growth of 50% and a 2019-2020 financial year with an order book that should enable it to exceed the €100 million turnover threshold.

Magic Yachts is a legendary shipyard, created in 1999 in Bizerte by Wally, the manufacturer of Monaco luxury yachts and sailing boats, and acquired in 2012 by a consortium of Italian entrepreneurs.

Located in the Bizerte free zone, Magic Yachts has an exceptional industrial site on the seaside of nearly 30,000 m2, including more than 10,000 m2 of modern buildings, and an experienced workforce.

Magic Yachts' know-how is renowned in all areas of high-end nautical construction (sailing and motor boats up to 40 metres, including catamarans), mastery of all composite technologies (infusion, injection, cooking of prepreg fabrics, epoxy, carbon), modelling, tools, carpentry, stainless steel, refitting of ships up to 45 metres, etc.

Why Catana Group is buying Magic Yachts

The acquisition of Magic Yachts comes at a time of strong production growth for Catana Group, whose Bali and Catana ranges are proving very successful, which has already invested nearly €10 million this year at its three current sites in Canet en Roussillon (France), Marans (France) and El Haouaria (Haco - Tunisia).

7 months ago, Catana Group announced its intention to open a new factory in Canet-en-Roussillon.

However, it seems that the problem of negotiating with the local authority to find the required space on the nautical centre, the delays involved, the difficulties of recruiting qualified personnel and the very significant increase in taxation on industrial activities, have weighed on the choice of the industrialist.

In fact, the existing Canet-en-Roussillon site, which produces nearly half of the Group's catamarans, will be optimized in the coming months, thus doubling the number of units produced in the historic Catana range.

The search for a large existing production tool had therefore become the solution to meet the production needs of the Bali range, whose highly innovative concept has ensured a significant increase in market share for several years.

Two companies that know each other well

Catana Group and Magic Yachts know each other well, who have been working together for several months, to produce models and moulds.

This collaboration has undoubtedly facilitated the establishment of the foundations of a more ambitious joint project with Francesco Campana, who had been managing the site since 2003 and who will remain permanently involved in the company.

Under the terms of the agreement, Catana Group will acquire 75% of Magic Yachts' capital through Haco, the French group's Tunisian production subsidiary, which already accounts for 20% of the Group's production.

This acquisition will be definitive after the last conditions precedent have been lifted, at the latest by the end of March 2020, but the collaboration between the two companies has already intensified.

Aventura 44: This Tunisian-built catamaran is well worth a closer look

Yachting World

  • July 22, 2020

This 44 is the new flagship of the growing Aventura brand. These Tunisian-built catamarans are designed by Lasta Studio, like the Bali range

This means a modern look and feel to them with a marked chine, heavy reverse sheer, dreadnought bows and a prominent but swept-back coachroof.

Key features include a raised bulkhead steering position, sliding windows and door between cockpit and saloon, and a dedicated chart table with a fine view ahead.

Aventura makes much of its ‘innovative’ saloon/cockpit design, although there doesn’t appear to be anything too original about it.

What it does do is to create good walkthrough space to reach the aft platform. The Aventura 44’s layout can accommodate three or four double cabins, with either two or four heads.

Aventura also cites the use of oversize deck equipment as proof that it has been developed with input from offshore sailors.

That also seems to extend to the engines, which offer 2x40hp or 57hp depending on the option – for a 10 tonne catamaran , that’s pretty generous.

BALI 4.0: A SMALL AND REVOLUTIONARY BOAT. THE COMPLETE SEA TRIAL.

  • March 14, 2016

Bali 4.0  is a further and definitive step forward by Catana in the catamarans field. In its 30-year-life, the French brand has conquered a top position in the international boating as regards multihulls. Its boats are famous for their high quality, solidity and custom production. For a couple of years, since Cannes Exhibition in 2014, they have been launching the Bali range, with Bali 4.5 and Bali 4.3. The aim is to conquer the high numbers market and not only the excellence one.

Catana/Bali’s producing establishments are four, in addition to that one of Canet en Roussillon (where the biggest Catana boats, from 47 to 70 feet, and Bali 4.5 are produced): they are located in Marans, near La Rochelle ((Catana 42, Bali 4.3 and 4.0), in Tolone (seat of the brokerage and big custom models) and finally in Tunisia , where Bali 4.0 is produced but only in the charter version with four cabins . The advantages of a construction site in North Africa are, in addition to a good manpower cost reduction, an easier delivery in the harbours where charter Bali 4.0 has its natural intended use: Greece, Turkey, Southern Italy, Croatia.

bali catamaran tunisie

We tested the boat in a not good day in Marina di Loano. It was very wind (about 25 knots). Gusts coming from Liguria were particularly annoying. So, the typical conditions where a good family man (even a good sailor) would have given up and would have preferred to stay in the harbour to taste a good Pigato and some taggiasche olives . But Bali 4.0 was extremely efficient, quiet and reassuring. Its two engines make everything easy. The rudder on the fly bridge allow a 306-degree view and easy manoeuvres.

Once left, with the mainsail  reduced and the jib reduced of 20%, we sailed and we had fun. Our sensations, in order: great calmness, despite the storm outside. The boat gives the possibility to react but with calm. Equipments are extremely easy to use and the helmsman has anything at his fingertips. So, our second sensation: it is very easy to drive.

Third sensation and the consequence of the previous ones: forget adrenaline. The boat reacts but always with calm. Everything stays at its place, even our glass of Pigato, and you can enjoy navigation, landscape and your company. The maximum speed? 9.2 knots, and a peak of 25 knots. When the wind calmed down, the boat sailed well at 6/7 knots.

has there ever been a boat company or single owner who has taken out his wallet and donated a yacht that one or two people could handle and use as there home, its just a dream for me.Thank You.John

I have been trying to get information of the speed of the Bali under sail without engines. Every sea trial I have read uses the engines while under sail. A sea trial without giving speed over ground and wind speed information under sail is a joke. I would appreciate some honest facts under sail.

Bali Catsmart

Exceptional Mid-Size Cruising

Building on its popular “open space” concept sailing catamarans, the new Bali 4.2 is well-positioned to reign in the mid-sized market with the customary CATANA shipyard innovations and seakeeping qualities that make for an exceptional cruising experience.

Designed by Olivier Poncin, Xavier FAŸ, and the CATANA team, the 4.2 features spacious unobstructed social areas, panoramic views and a saloon that opens entirely to the aft cockpit with the signature Bali tilt-and-turn door.

As always, Bali has delivered a cruiser that optimizes living space and comfort without compromising safety and performance – an outstanding catamaran for both day sailing and extended bluewater cruising.

bali catamaran tunisie

Outdoor Comfort Redefined

Social gathering spaces are a priority on the Bali 4.2, as evidenced by the expansive foredeck cockpit with wraparound bench seating and dinette. A massive cushioned sun bed replaces the traditional catamaran trampoline – ideal for relaxed lounging and socializing.

The flybridge is accessed via the port or starboard stairs, and features forward-facing lounge seating, plus a large sunbed area. Both allow guests plenty of room to enjoy 360 views and easy conversation with the helmsman.

To aft, the wide transom steps provide access for swimming or to the dinghy davits for easily launching the tender. The aft cockpit integrates with the interior saloon using the electric tilting “garage door” style opener, to instantly create a large open-air gathering area.

bali catamaran tunisie

Modern Efficiency

Another exciting feature on the Bali 4.2 – normally found only on larger catamarans – is a convenient front door for access to the forward deck from the saloon and galley. Both the foredeck and saloon dining areas are conveniently served from the large well-equipped galley, complete with a full size refrigerator. The saloon has a warm, comfortable feel with clean lines and modern finishes.

The 4.2 is available in your choice of 3- or 4-cabin layout. The 3-cabin/3-bath layout features a massive owner’s suite occupying the port hull, with settee, desk area, and bath with separate shower stall. Or, choose a 4-cabin/4-bath version for charter or larger crews.

History of Bali

Bali Catamarans is a relatively young player in the world of boat manufacturing, having been established in 2014. The brand was launched by the Catana Group, which is well-known for its high-performance, luxury cruising catamarans. This location allowed Bali to leverage the rich nautical heritage of the region and attract skilled workforce experienced in high-quality boat building. From the beginning, Bali utilised modern engineering techniques and state-of-the-art materials to produce catamarans that meet the stringent requirements of ocean cruisers.Today, Bali Catamarans continues to operate from its base in Canet-en-Roussillon, having expanded its production capabilities to meet growing global demand. The brand has earned a reputation for reliability, innovation, and comfort, making it a favourite among sailors looking for a balance of performance and luxury. Bali Catsmart 38

bali catamaran tunisie

The Catsmart, launched in 2023, is the baby of the Bali range at 38 feet. Although this is the smallest yacht in the range, it still feels big thanks to Bali’s innovative design (tilting aft door, no bulkheads in the saloon) and with twin aft helms, they have maximised the living space up top on this entry-level boat.

Video Short

Those aft helms and the low boom give the Catsmart a sportier look than her sisters.

With a length of 11.79 m and a width of 6.46 m, the Catsmart stays true to the Bali DNA with features such as the solid forward cockpit, the huge open saloon/aft cockpit area and the Bali tilting door.

These yachts are available in several layouts including an owner’s version with two cabins and two bathrooms (one in each hull), and a charter version with four guest cabins with an option for two extra bow cabins in the forepeaks, either for the skipper or additional guests.

Living Space

The Catsmart has a solid forward cockpit lounge area with sunbathing areas. Aft, a platform connects the two hulls with a long bench seat with storage lockers. The tilting door provides plenty of ventilation through the saloon and a large living and galley space for a 38-footer.
