These Boats Are Really Big, but Barcelona Has the Room

BARCELONA, Spain — Launched less than a year ago, the 460-foot-long, eight-deck Solaris is one of the newest of the superyachts that are the floating palaces of the sea. It has a helipad, of course, plus a swimming pool and all the other high-tech amenities required by its Russian billionaire owner, Roman Abramovich .

But on a recent morning in Barcelona, the $600 million Solaris was out of the water, wedged into a dry dock, as workers toiled underneath its light-gray hull. They were fixing its finlike stabilizers, which help steady the massive vessel in rough seas but retract when there are no swells. At the opposite end of the boatyard, another giant, the Sea Rhapsody, was getting a final checkup before being put back into the water.

As the rich have gotten richer during the pandemic, their boats have gotten larger and more expensive — and when these over-the-top superyachts aren’t taking their owners to private holiday spots in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, they need a place to drop anchor and deal with repairs.

And it is here that Barcelona, whose days as a commercial shipyard faded years ago, sees an economic opportunity.

Barcelona has turned itself into a hub for these luxury vessels, combining a private marina that is investing 20 million euros ($22.7 million) this year to turn itself into the largest port reserved for superyachts in the Mediterranean and maintenance facilities that can hoist behemoths out of the water and then summon a small army to do repairs.

And it doesn’t hurt that Barcelona offers the ships’ crew members downtime in one of the Mediterranean’s biggest tourism destinations.

Attracting billionaire yacht owners is only a small part of Barcelona’s efforts to tap into the “blue economy” of the sea, said Jaume Collboni, the deputy mayor. Barcelona’s port authority recently approved the construction of a new terminal for cruise ships, set to open in 2024. The city is also overhauling the seafront area that was developed for the Summer Olympics of 1992, which Barcelona hosted.

The pandemic was a huge blow for a city that normally welcomes millions of visitors. It showed that “diversification is becoming very important,” Mr. Collboni said. “When tourism dropped down to zero, some parts of the city were heavily affected, and we have needed to find new jobs, also for a less qualified work force.”

At the same time, the spread of the coronavirus gave the world’s billionaires a new excuse for keeping their distance from other people, a role perfectly suited for superyachts.

Worldwide about 5,700 yachts are over 30 meters long (just under 100 feet), and this fleet is set to expand 15 percent by 2025, according to industry projections . At the pinnacle of this market are about 370 megayachts of over 60 meters, whose number has risen 70 percent in the past decade and is forecast to reach 500 in about seven years. Construction yards have been struggling to keep up: The order book for superyachts is full until 2025.

MB92, the company that operates Barcelona’s superyacht maintenance facility, known as a refit yard, has 180 employees, but much of the labor is carried out by about 1,000 subcontractors whose jobs cover a variety of specialties, including painting, carpentry and insulation work. About 40 workshops are scattered around the yard, and during the peak repair seasons of spring and fall the yard can work on about 25 yachts at a time.

The yacht maintenance business has been jumping. MB92, which also owns a smaller yard in La Ciotat, France, reported revenue of €191 million (about $215 million) in 2021, up from €150 million in 2019.

Even if a superyacht is a striking showcase of wealth, owners expect those working for them to keep silent about their assets and whereabouts. When asked about the Sea Rhapsody’s destination once it left the yard, Henk Dreijer, the commercial director of MB92, demurred, suggesting that it was bound for “the Caribbean, but it could also be the Seychelles or somewhere else.”

“We work for people who like to be very discreet,” he added.

In Barcelona, which is led by a left-wing city government , not everybody welcomes the arrival of billionaires and their yachts, whose marinas are typically fenced off from the rest of the city’s waterfront.

“We are bringing in the richest people in the world, but they don’t spend their money in our local neighborhoods, they have yachts that fly the flags of tax havens, and they hire crews who are not from Barcelona,” said Gala Pin, a city lawmaker in Barcelona until 2019.

“We have also allowed private and very opaque companies to squeeze profits from public land and instead fence off access to a port area that should be enjoyed by all the citizens of Barcelona,” she added.

A decade ago, Ms. Pin and other residents held demonstrations to protest the initial project to develop Port Vell, a privately owned marina for luxury yachts. But Ms. Pin now concedes that the yacht business is very firmly anchored in Barcelona. Meanwhile, the city’s dwindling fishing fleet is squeezed into a small enclave, sandwiched between MB92’s yard and the superyacht marina.

Port Vell is in the midst of a major overhaul to become the largest superyacht marina in the Mediterranean. It is jointly owned by QInvest, a Qatari investment firm, and a group of investors led by Vagit Alekperov, the president of the Russian oil company Lukoil. Mr. Alekperov is also a partner in a fund run by Squircle Capital, a private equity firm based in Luxembourg. In 2019, Squircle bought a majority stake in MB92, the shipyard operator.

Even if the owners spend little time in Barcelona, the largest of these yachts have several dozen crew members who make lengthy stays and are “people with salaries that are generally higher than local salaries and money that they have not been spending on board,” said Ignacio Erroz, the director general of Port Vell. He said a PwC study commissioned by his company had estimated that Port Vell contributed €30 million a year to Barcelona’s economy.

Mr. Erroz forecast that Barcelona would continue to grow as a superyacht hub, in large part because “being able to anchor right in the heart of a big city is a major selling point.” But he also anticipated tougher competition.

“I think we will see many more existing ports adapting their infrastructure to welcome this kind of boat,” he said.

The Arco de Triunfo de Barcelona is another historical landmark in the city you should visit. Built in 1888, it is located at the entrance to Promenade Passeig de Lluís Companys , which is named after the president who was murdered in 1940.

Walking around the streets of Barcelona is always going to feel a little bit like travelling back in time. Most of the architecture of the city might be influenced by Gaudi, but there are also many well-preserved Medieval buildings to be found. One of them is Barrio Gotico . Santa Maria del Pi is a church that was built in the 14th century and is also worth a visit.

Discover mystical Barcelona

The first thing you think about when thinking about Barcelona are probably football, the beach and sunshine all year round. But beware! There are many myths and legends revolving around the city. One of them is about the so-called vampire of Barcelona in the beginning of the 20th century. However, this is not a fairytale, it is the story of a gruesome woman named Enriqueta Martí, who abducted children in broad daylight and offered them to the wealthy people of Barcelona as prostitutes. She was finally arrested in 1912. Very scary times!

Sailing conditions in Barcelona

Barcelona is a very popular sailing destination in the Mediterranean - for good reason! The colourful city is known for its fun nightlife, long sandy beaches and various spots that are perfect for anchoring or mooring.

Sailing season in Barcelona is between May and October, however, it is important to keep in mind that the summer months June, July and August are particularly popular with tourists. Hot temperatures, as well as crowded streets and beaches are typical during this time. Water temperatures can reach 28 degrees during the hottest months. If you want to avoid the masses, but still want to enjoy the warm weather, it is best to visit the city in September or October. If you still want to come here during the busy summer months, renting a boat is a great option to do your own thing and sail to beaches that you can only reach by boat.

Barcelona is the perfect sailing destination for novice and amateur sailors. Southeastern winds and northern winds dominate this part of Spain and ensure that you can even enjoy a sailing adventure in the summer. Experienced sailors and those that lust for adventures might want to head North of Barcelona to chase stronger winds - especially in the winter months.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Barcelona?

The price to rent a boat in Barcelona highly depends on the season, the type and size of the boat, as well as the amount of passengers and the age of the boat. Spain is definitely not the most expensive destination in the Mediterranean, meaning that you can rent a boat for very little money.

On average it costs just 68 EUR per person per day to charter a sailboat in Spain . Rent a RIB in Spain at an average price of 54 EUR per person per day. Renting a speedboat in Spain will cost you 85 EUR per person per day on average. It will cost you a little more to rent a catamaran or motorboat in Spain . Renting a catamaran will cost you 111 EUR on average per person per day. Rent a motorboat in Spain at an average price of 179 EUR per person per day.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Barcelona?

It all depends on your dream sailing vacation in Barcelona. If you just want to sunbathe all day long and party with your friends at night, you would charter a different type of boat than the one you would rent if you want to practice your sailing skills and feel the wind on your skin.

Rent a catamaran in Barcelona

Pros of renting a catamaran in Barcelona

Renting a catamaran in Barcelona means that you get to see the city and the surrounding areas from a whole new perspective. One of the advantages of renting a catamaran is the fact that they have a shallow draft. This makes them perfect for exploring beaches, bays and getting to historical sights like Mirador del Semáforo .

Another advantage of chartering a catamaran in Barcelona is the fact that they are equipped with a motor and a sail. This gives you a huge advantage over other types of boats. You can sail with the wind as long as it’s blowing and revert to the engine should the wind suddenly stop blowing. This is fantastic, because you won’t get stuck in the middle of the sea should mother nature suddenly decide to stop blessing you with appropriate winds.

Another great thing about catamarans is their size. They are generally quite spacious, allowing you to feel less claustrophobic than on other types of boats. You will definitely get a good night’s sleep here and will feel like you are in a hotel room and not in a cabin on a boat in the Mediterranean.

As catamarans are standing on two hulls, they are more stable than other types of boats. Should the wind suddenly pick up, you won’t feel it as much as you would with other boats. You might hear the water hitting the boat harder, but it is still much more comfortable.

One of the most popular catamarans to rent in Barcelona is Catamaran Bali 4.1 . The boat offers space for up to 12 people and comes with a professional captain who is going to navigate you safely through the Mediterranean waters.

Cons of renting a catamaran in Barcelona

One of the downsides of renting a catamaran in Barcelona is the fact that they are quite big. This can make mooring at the marinas a little complicated at times - if you are able to secure a spot. It might also make mooring at a marina more expensive as they require more space than other types of boats.

Charter a catamaran in Barcelona

Rent a sailboat in Barcelona

Pros of renting a sailboat in Barcelona

Renting a sailboat in Barcelona means that you get to enjoy the full sailing experience while vacationing on the Spanish coast. As the wind is your fuel, you don’t have to worry about any additional extortionate costs. Set sail and discover what the Mediterranean sea and the stunning Spanish coastline have to offer. Barcelona doesn’t get strong winds like other parts of the Mediterranean, making it the perfect spot for novice sailors.

One of the most popular sailboat rentals in Barcelona is Sailboat Hanse 400 which is available to rent in Port Olímpic de Barcelona . It offers space for up to 7 people and can be rented with or without a captain. A refrigerator and a stove on board ensure that you can prepare your own food while sailing and don’t need to worry about stopping in between in order to stock up on food.

Cons of renting a sailboat in Barcelona

If you want to charter a sailboat in Barcelona , you need to keep in mind that you are fully dependent on the wind. You might get stuck in the middle of the sea should the wind suddenly stop blowing. This might leave some frustrations if you can’t reach your destination as quickly as you might have hoped. The summer months in particular can lack stronger winds. Some sailboats are equipped with a little engine, but they are not made for long distances.

Rent a motorboat in Barcelona

Pros of renting a motorboat in Barcelona

Renting a motorboat in Barcelona comes with many advantages. It is generally faster than other types of boats, making it the perfect boat if you want to explore the surrounding area and check off the many beautiful sights you can visit. Especially if you want to sail further South, you need a boat that can handle the distance and offers the comforts you need when doing so.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Barcelona

Unlike catamarans, motorboats are only equipped with an engine. This means that you always need to ensure that your tank is full and ready for the journey. You can’t use the wind as fuel. With the ever-increasing fuel prices you should also keep in mind that you can expect a hefty bill at the end of your trip in addition to the bareboat charter price.

Charter a luxury yacht in Barcelona

What kind of boat license do you need when renting a boat in Barcelona?

In Spain you don’t need a boat licence to rent a boat if it is shorter than 5 metres or shorter than 6 metres in the case of sailboats. The boat should also not be able to operate at more than 15hp. This might sound like a dream come true, but keep in mind that you can only operate these kinds of boats during the day when there is light. It is not allowed to operate any boats without a licence in Spain at night.

If you are in possession of the Licencia de Navegación , you can operate boats that are not longer than 6 metres, but you can only sail up to two miles away from the coast.

Guide to Barcelona

A city that inspires artists, chef’s and discerning travellers the world over

Famed for its enchanting architecture, fabulous dining and bountiful culture, the seaside city of Barcelona is a superyacht stop-off you’ll never forget.

Barcelona’s location alone is idyllic, situated on the north-eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula overlooking the blue of the Mediterranean Sea. It is watched over by the Serra de Collserola mountain range between the rivers Besòs and Llobregat with the towering 512 m (1,680 ft) high Tibidabo mountain providing an amazing backdrop as well as fantastic views over the city. If you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a few hours then the peaks are engulfed by the beautiful Collserola Natural Park which is the biggest metropolitan park in the world.

As the capital of Catalonia and with colourful architectural treasures spanning more than 2,000 years, Barcelona is a city that needs no introduction but one where you can enjoy unlimited experiences. Magnificent temple columns allude to its ancient history while the winding lanes of its Gothic Quarter express its charismatic edge. Keep exploring and at every turn you’ll be greeted with the spectacular creations of the renowned Gaudi and his contemporaries, to make this a truly memorable yacht charter destination.

The beauty of Barcelona has long been an inspiration to artists the world over and it now hosts two museums dedicated to the works of Picasso and Joan Miró, both of whom fell in love with the city. Its masterpieces are not just confined to art and architecture however – the city’s gastronomic delights are just as celebrated and its restaurant scene is now one of the most talked about in the Mediterranean . From Galician seafood taverns, avant-garde Japanese restaurants, a full spectrum of fun and fine dining options will keep your time ashore packed full of flavour.

How to Choose a Sailing Tour?

When choosing a sailing tour the first choice is whether you want to hire a private boat (with skipper), for just you and your partner, or friends and family. This can be done from as little as €250 for a 3-hr sail on an 8 metre yacht, with prices rising for bigger vessels. More details later on this page .

For most people, I would suggest that booking a space on public tour makes more sense, as it’s a lot more affordable and still plenty of fun. Broadly speaking, we can divide public sailing tours into three categories:

Sailing Yacht Tours

Sailing yacht tours are perhaps the most authentic experience as your skipper will rely on wind-power to captain your vessel and you’re sure to feel the ocean spray once in a while too! Prices start at €39 per person on a 1.5 hour Sailing Trip , while the in-demand Sunset Sailing Trips start at €69. (Plus you can use promo code BARCELONALIFE to save 5% on those prices!).

Catamaran tours are steadier and more comfortable, and still use windpower for the most part, but the experience is closer to a boat cruise. They are more affordable and you will share the vessel with a larger number of people.

Boat tours typically take place on big steady diesel-powered boats such as the famous Golodrinas ferries, although luxury, RIB and speedboat tour options also exist for adrenaline seekers!

Yacht life…. making the most of the Mediterranean!

Motorised boat tours are all very well, but true sailors understand that the real thrill of sailing is to harness the power of the wind and plough the ocean furrows. If you’ve been on a yacht once or twice before, you can usually help the captain by winching in some ropes, or even steering the helm. While those who don’t know their port from their starboard (and have little intention of learning) can dedicate themselves to drinking champagne  on deck and working on their tan.

1. Sailing Tour (1.5 hrs) with Vermouth

This is the number one activity from Barcelona’s number one boat company, Sailing Experience . Their professional skippers will take you out on an 11 person sailboat for a 1.5 hour spin on the big blue. You’ll leave from Port Olimpic and, looking back across land, you’ll be able to admire views of the Olympic Village, sun-kissed city beaches and the modern skyscrapers of Poblenou. And you’ll do all that with a delicious glass of Catalan vermouth in your hand, or beer, sangria, wine or soft drinks, if you prefer. This tour runs four times a day (9:30am, 12pm, 2:30pm and 4:30pm) every day of the year – even on Christmas day – and costs just €39-44 per person. Check below for a 5% discount code too!

2. Sailing Tour (2hrs) with Brunch

Get your day off to wonderful start by combining some sunshine and bracing sea air with a delicious brunch of local pastries, ‘pica pica’ snacks and hot and cold beverages. Another of Sailing Experience ‘s most booked trips, this 2-hour cruise must be one of the best ways to start a day of sightseeing in Barcelona. The tour departs from Port Olimpic daily at 9:30am… but if you’re not a morning person, you can book the same experience with snacks and aperitif for 12pm, 2:30pm or 4:30pm. Best to reserve your space early, as some time slots will sell out.

3. Sunset Sail with Cava

Barcelona boasts some beautiful sunsets, and there are few places better to enjoy them than out on a boat with views back over the city’s rose-tinted skyline, glass of sparkling Cava in hand. The activity takes place on a 12-metre yacht with a maximum of 11 passengers, and also includes snacks and other beverages. After a hectic schedule of sightseeing, this is the perfect way to round off your day! For a little bit extra you can upgrade this experience to include live music on board (either Spanish guitar or live saxophone!). Keep reading for more info…

Catamaran tours are affordable, relaxed and fun, and their twin hulls make them steadier than yachts, so I would recommend this option if you are prone to any seasickness. Catamarans vary in size, often fitting between 30 and 100 people, so obviously they are less exclusive than taking a trip in a yacht, and you may have to sit on the netting, but they offer good value for money. (They are also the vessel of choice for epic parties, if that’s your thing !).

5. Small-Group Catamaran Tour (2 hrs)

A great option if you want a bit more exclusivity than the larger catamaran tours, this small group option hosts a maximum of 30 people on board a gorgeous red-and-white catamaran, and even includes a free tapa (that’s singular of tapas!) and drink of your choice. Choose the day time tour and you can take advantage of a 30 minute swim stop and dive into the Mediterranean, or opt for the sunset cruise and enjoy the setting sphere. Reserve via Get Your Guide .

6. Sunset Cruise w/ Live Music (1.5 hrs)

It doesn’t get much more affordable than this catamaran cruise which costs just over €25 per person and even includes a live jazz concert on board. 7. Las Golondrinas Boat Tour

This affordable tour departs several times a day from the Port Vell (Old Port), near Las Ramblas, and takes you on a pleasure cruise along Barcelona’s coastline, past Barceloneta beach, all the way to the twin towers at the modern Port Olimpic, before heading back to where you began. This tour has been taken by 100,000s of travellers since it began back in 1888, and is still popular today. The tour takes place on a comfortable, large motorised catamaran (not a sailing boat!), departing several times a day. You can book via Get Your Guide .

15. Wine Tasting & Sailing

Probably my favourite of all the activities on this page, I would highly recommend this excursion to anyone with half a day to spare in Barcelona. There are a few different options here, but you can either set sail from Barcelona to the nearby Alella wine region, to enjoy a sumptuous wine tasting overlooking the sea, or you can do the winery first and then sail back to Barcelona, merrily tipsy as you recline on deck (which would be my preference!). For the other leg of the journey, you can choose private transport by car, or you can ride along the coast on an electric bike. (You can even choose to e-bike it both ways, but then you would miss out on the sailing!). Check out Get Your Guide, where you can select the best option for you .

Yacht Charter Companies

There are a number of yacht charter companies in Barcelona, from whom you can hire you a variety of boats, including sailing yachts, motorboats and catamarans. If you’re a qualified sailor you can leave a deposit and rent a yacht bareboat, ie. without a skipper/crew, and get going. However, most companies provide the option of hiring a professional captain to make sure your sailing holiday doesn’t end in you shipwrecking yourself on a desert island and being forced to grow a Tom Hanks-style beard.

Barcelona Yacht Charter

This leading private charter company, directly affiliated with Barcelona Life, has an enviable array of vessels to choose from – from 1 to 12 berth sailing yachts, top notch motor yachts, three catamarans and several historical yachts. You’ll definitely be the envy of the Costa Brava swanning along the Mediterranean in the Llaüt “Sant Ramon” from 1904. Virtually all of their vessels are available both for bareboat rental or with a skipper and/or crew and hostess. They can also arrange sailing day trips, boat parties and luxury cruises for large corporate groups . Whatever you need, email us on  [email protected]  and we’ll get back to you with a price quote.

Sailing Holidays

Barcelona is one of the best bases in the world for sailing holidays, with its clement weather , modern marinas and the wealth of picturesque coastal towns along the Costa Brava.

Qualified sailors can charter a yacht from Barcelona and take a leisurely (or not so leisurely) cruise around the Mediterranean, heading up to France or further down to Spain’s southern resort towns like Marbella.

Those with a week or so to spend at sea might also note the city’s proximity to the magical Balearic islands,  Majorca , Menorca and  Ibiza .

Meanwhile, aspiring Buccaneers might choose to spend a week or two in  Barcelona  learning the ropes (quite literally) on an RYA accredited sailing course that will have you hoisting, tacking and reefing up and down the rugged coastline of the Costa Brava.

Obviously, for the casual tourist, there are plenty of sailing activities on offer in the Catalan capital, which can be enjoyed in a single afternoon, or less, thus allowing more time for all the other fun things to do in the city ! Just scroll up the page to read about them!

We’re currently researching the best providers of sailing lessons and courses in and around Barcelona and the Costa Brava, where you can study for your  RYA sailing certificate , and become a qualified seafarer. We’ll be back to update this page shortly with this information.

Corporate Sailing Events

If you’re on this page looking for sailing activity for a corporate team building event then you’ve just struck gold. This sailing regatta allows up 400 people to take part, racing against each other on boats of up to 8 people. It’s a tonne of fun, and a great way to challenge your colleagues and also see them work together in a new way. Maybe that’s why Pepsi, Mars, Zurich, Unilever, DHL and Swarovski have all booked it for their staff in recent years. We work direct with the provider, with no mark up on the price, so just drop us an email on [email protected] with dates, group size, etc and you’ll hear back within 1 working day.

About the Author

Duncan the Author

Eleni Manoli

Hi Duncan, I am looking for a boat ride for two people as a gift for my boss, who is getting married and lives in Barcelona. Which one would you recommend? My boss and her partner are around 60 years old, so please take that under consideration, as they prefer things a little bit more comfortable. My budget for the both of them is around 220 EU, maybe stretching it to 250EU. By the way when I saw your picture I could not believe it. We met in Iguazu falls a few years back when my and my friend Agnes were travelling there. I have a few photos of the three of us when we went on the boat around the falls 🙂 Hope you are doing well and look forward to hearing back from you!

Hey Eleni, small world! That was a lovely day at Iguazu! I’m checking out some boat options for you now, and will be in touch! x

I am looking for a private boat trip for 24 people.

We want to sail for 3 hours near Barcelona with music and drinks all-in.

We would like to leave on July 1, 2023 in the afternoon. Around 2:00 PM approximately.

Do you have a boat available and can you offer a total price?

Hi Bjorn, hopefully you saw the catamaran options my partners sent over!

Best way for private boat requests is to send us an email. Many thanks!

' src=

Hi Duncan, I am trying to find a way of crossing the sea from Barcelona to Palma, on a sailing boat. We want to get to Palma from London, by not flying, and by using as little CO2 as we can. Diesel ferry boats use the dirtiest fuel and end up not being any mor eco-friendly than flying! We can take the train to Barcelona but I can’t find a friendly sailor to take us across to Palma and collect us a week later for the return trip. In these days of ‘green tourism’ it seems like these sailing holidaly and party boats are missing a trick. Many people like us want to do the right thing for the environment but still travel leaving a smaller a carbon footprint as possible. Any ideas Duncan? There are two of us. My husband has some sailing experience so could help with ropes and things 🙂 Best wishes, Sonja (Thame, England)

I am not sure this service exists to be honest, but there are some sailing holidays that depart from Barcelona to Mallorca… you might want to run this page through Google translate for example, or get in touch with them to find out what is possible.

https://www.sailwiz.com/velero-mallorca-barcelona

I can also send your enquiry to my sailing partners, just in case they have any boats going out that way. What dates are you looking at?

Rent motor yachts

Barcelona is a European city where a favorable climate, high-quality infrastructure, tasty and inexpensive food, rich Mediterranean traditions and interesting places where visitors are always welcome are perfectly combined.

A yacht charter in Barcelona is suitable for people who prefer luxury and comfort while traveling. The cost of transport rental and excursions is not important for them.

The high price of renting motor yachts is due to the high fuel consumption when sailing and their comfort. The benefits also include the ability to quickly move between locations. Compared to sailing catamarans and classic sailboats, they are capable of speed. This allows you to visit as many attractions as possible in a short time. Everything is beautiful in Barcelona, especially the magical architecture, which is often used as a film set and inspires artists all over the world daily.

In Barcelona, you can sail on yachts all year round. The coastline is 8,000 km, over 300 marinas and many sailing centers. But in late autumn and winter, be sure to wear warm clothes. The peak season runs from March to October, including both months. Most in demand for hourly yacht charter services is from May to September, as these months are the warmest, and during the Spanish national holidays and annual festivals.

The capacity of most motor yachts is up to 12 people. The duration of the trip, for which it is optimal to rent a yacht, depends on the purpose of the holiday or event.

For a pleasant yacht charter in Barcelona, the ideal rental length is between 2 and 4 hours. You can choose between beaches located on the outskirts of Barcelona, which are quieter and less crowded, and those in the center, where life is always in full swing.

If you want to spend more time sailing, it is worth renting a motor yacht for the whole day (8 hours) and ordering catering services to try Catalan Mediterranean cuisine. It was formed under the influence of the Greeks, Romans, French, and Italians. The menu is dominated by popular ingredients with health benefits. Fish, seafood, sun-ripened vegetables, and tasty wine create a combination that is hard to resist. Among the most popular local dishes: are hato (anchovy, cod, tuna salad with chicory and olives), empanadas (Spanish shrimp paella), escalivada (baked vegetables), panele desserts, tortella, Catalan creams, etc.

List of things you need to take with you to rent a yacht for a few hours or a whole day:

  • Sunglasses,
  • sun hat (cap)
  • bathing suit,
  • shoes with white non-slip soles,
  • jacket (in case it gets cold at sunset),
  • cure for seasickness.

If the sea is calm, you can make a stop, leaving the boat to drift, to swim in the open sea. You can also anchor near the beach to swim and relax on the shore.

Most often, yachts are rented for the following events:

  • holidays with family or friends,
  • business meeting,
  • birthday celebrations or small weddings,

Most of our yachts in Barcelona are located in ports and marinas: Port Marina Vela, Port Olimpic, and One Ocean Club. Therefore, you always have the opportunity to order a motor yacht for rent near you, regardless of the area of temporary residence.

How to book a motor yacht in Barcelona?

It is necessary to determine the number of people, choose the day, and start and end time of the walk. Contact our managers and they will select the right motor yachts for rent in Barcelona for your sailing trip or event.

After choosing a specific yacht option, you make an online booking and pay 50% of the rental price. The remaining 50% is paid on the day of the charter at the time of boarding the yacht.

After booking, you will receive an email or a message from one of the selected messengers with a confirmation, an exact meeting point, and details of the yacht holiday.

Frequently asked questions about yacht rental in Barcelona

Prices for renting motor yachts depend on the choice of a particular yacht, its size, release year, brand, length of rental, and season (high or low).

Welcome to the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup taking place between August and October 2024 in the beating heart of beautiful Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia and one of the most visited cities on planet Earth. Situated around Port Vell and along the beach to Port Olímpic, the sailing world has made Barcelona their home for what promises to be one of the most intense America’s Cups in the event’s 174-year history.

WHAT IS THE AMERICA'S CUP: THE RACE WITH NO SECOND PLACE

It is the oldest international sporting trophy – dating back to 1851 – and stands as one of the hardest sporting endeavours. The New York Yacht Club, one of the most prestigious clubs in the world, held the trophy for 132 years before losing it in 1983 to Australia. Since then, the Cup has only been won by teams from the United States, Switzerland, and New Zealand. The current Defender of the America's Cup is Emirates Team New Zealand, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

WHERE: BARCELONA, CATALONIA, SPAIN

“Like a jewel in the sun” was how Montserrat Caballé and Freddy Mercury described Barcelona in their famous song about the city. The cosmopolitan capital of Spain’s Catalonia region–known worldwide for its art, architecture and vibrancy–is shining even brighter as preparations are well underway to welcome the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup and its teams. All the teams’ bases are located within the Port Vell area and surrounded by the America’s Cup Race Village where tens of thousands of spectators can be accommodated daily. The racecourse, just outside the port entrance breakwaters, is set in front of significant fan zones, beach viewing platforms and a hospitality area to provide the perfect vista.

WHEN: AUGUST – OCTOBER 2024

The Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta starts on the 22nd August and the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series) will follow, leading up to the Louis Vuitton America's Cup Match starting on the 12th of October 2024. During 2023 and early 2024, three preliminary events will be held in Vilanova i La Geltrú, Jeddah, and Barcelona. In June 2023, all teams set up their bases and are training in Barcelona. Further details and race schedules will be published in due course.

WHO’S RACING: Emirates Team New Zealand, INEOS Britannia, Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, NYYC American Magic and Orient Express Racing Team

The holders of the America’s Cup are Emirates Team New Zealand representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, but some strong competition is coming for them. INEOS Britannia, the ‘Challenger of Record’ from the United Kingdom, are in charge of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series) to decide who will race against Emirates Team New Zealand for the trophy. The unique format of the Cup sees the Defender of the trophy automatically entitled to race in the final Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup Match whereas the Challengers will undertake a series to find the top yacht to take on the New Zealand team. The additional confirmed entries are: Alinghi Red Bull Racing from Switzerland, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli from Italy, American Magic New York Yacht Club from the USA and Orient Express Racing Team from France.

WHAT BOATS: AC75 AND AC40

The AC75s are the pinnacle of foiling monohull yachts. Created for the 36th America’s Cup, they are a technological leap ahead of typical yachts as Formula 1 is to your daily driver. With foils that lift them out of the water and enable the yachts to generate so much momentum that they sail 4x faster than the wind.

For the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup, the second generation of the AC75s will be even faster with wider foils and refinements all over. Eight crew will be aboard and some of the finest sailing talent will be charged with racing them.

The AC40s, meanwhile, are the boats used for the UniCredit Youth and Puig Women's America’s Cup events and as training vessels for the main teams competing in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup. Smaller but no less potent, with a four-person crew, these pocket-rockets were launched to much fanfare in September 2022, and their performance has been astonishing.

Event Format

The Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Barcelona will comprise several events that will eventually culminate in the October 2024 Match. The Preliminary Regattas will serve as warm-up races ahead of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series), which decides who moves on and faces the Defender for the ultimate prize. The very best female and youth athletes from around the world will be thrust into America’s Cup level racing for the UniCredit Youth & Puig Women's America's Cup events, paving the pathway to the future of the America’s Cup itself.

big yacht in barcelona

Although there are several ports in Barcelona, the main yacht port is called Marina Port Vell and is located in the heart of the Barceloneta Area.

Barcelona is a cosmopolitan city and most of the people in restaurants or bars will understand you in English, although the official languages of the city are Catalan and Spanish. Most seasoned yacht crew are familiar with Barcelona due to how busy the port is for superyachts now. but if it is your first time coming here on a yacht, hopefully, this guide will help you plan your time ashore and help make provisioning a bit easier.

Getting around.

Uber does not operates in Barcelona. But taxis are the way to go here. They are very cheap and provide an excellent service. Taxis in Barcelona are very economic as well you can use an app for taxis to book yours. The app is called FREE NOW and can be downloaded in Android or Iphone.

You can have a city tour for 20 EUR for cab, or just go to the other side of the city for less than 10 EUR. Replacing Uber is Cabify, the Spanish version of Uber, but is more expensive than regular taxis. You can download the app and book your Cabify too both in Android or Iphone.

You can purchase a Metro/bus/train ticket for aprox 12 EUR with 10 trips (this ticket is personal) or 1 single bus/metro ride will be 2,10 EUR.

Taxis will cost between 5 EUR to max 20 EUR around the city. Some well-recommended apps to download on your phone when in Barcelona are REBY or MOVO – both offering electric scooter or bikes rental by the minute – this is the ultimate way of visiting the city: fast, fun and cheap!

An Airport ride from the port takes about 30 minutes and with a taxi it would cost 35/40 EUR.

Safety warning for Barcelona yacht crew

We know how a boozy night out can sometimes end in self afflicted tears with crew conflicts and drama. But it’s worth noting how dangerous it can be in the city of Barcelona for yacht crew. Yachties are often targetted by muggers and those looking to make a quick buck from your misguided attention.

Walking home after dark alone should especially be avoided as a lone female near MB92. We have many first-hand accounts of petty and very serious crimes against yacht crew. Violent muggings are common enough, with at least one yacht crew member losing their life to these people in recent years. Please remain cautious in the area and do not make obvious displays of wealth when walking around at night.

The local Barceloneta police station can do little to assist you.

  • Best places and best sailing routes
  • All types of boats you can rent (sailboat, catamaran or yacht)

  • Where to rent a boat
  • Tips and recommendations

      1. Best places and best sailing routes

Barcelona is one of the best places in the world for a day yacht charter . This amazing city have the perfect scenario for sailing: good weather, good sea, beautiful skyline and beautiful beaches (if you know where to go).

We want to show you where you can go when you rent a yacht by hour in Barcelona :

Montgat beach :

This is the best place to anchor if you rent a sailboat for 4 hours or a motor yach for 2 or 3 hours. This is the better beach near Barcelona, located next to the small village called Montgat, is less crowded than the beaches of the city, the water is very blue and clear, perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

It is very easy to find, you just have to sail along the coast to the north around 1,5 hours by sailboat or 20 min by motor yacht. If you rent the boat with skipper he will know to find it very easy.

Montgat beach

Montgat beach

Badalona beach :

This will be your best option if you take a 2 or 3 hours yacht charter .

It is the first beach (sailing to the north) out of Barcelona area, the water quality is better than the Barcelona one and it is near from port olímpic (1 hours in a sailboat and 15 min in a motor yacht).

Badalona beach

Badalona beach

Skyline sailing trip:

If you rent a boat with skipper just for 2 or 3 hours and is not the warm season and you don’t want to swim, this is your best option.

Sailing from port olímpic, passing next to the W hotel and getting the north direction, you will enjoy the amazing views of the skyline of the city from the boat.

We recommend to sail until Badalona and come back to Barcelona.

      2. All types of boats you can rent (sailboat, catamaran, yacht or speed boat)

Depending on the number of people in your group and your preferences in terms of comfort, price and speed, one boat or another will be your best choice.

If you want to know all the pros and cons of every type of boat check our post:  What kind of boat should I rent in Barcelona?

Find below a quick resume of the four options you have:

The sailboats can take up to 12 people on board (11 + skipper). They are the best option if your group is 11 people or less. They are cheaper than the other options and you will be able to have the amazing feelings of sailing only with the sails without the motor.

The yachts are faster and more comfortable than the sailboats. They can sail fast from one beach to another. The bad thing they have is the price, they are more expensive due to the fuel consumption.

This type of boats has more capacity (up to 28 pax) so it will be your best option if your group is bigger than 11 people. They are more stable than the sailboats (good thing if you use to get seasick).

      3. Best season for yacht charter

The sailing season in Barcelona goes from march to October (both included). You can sail all year but we recommend to bring a good jacket with you if you rent the boat from November to February.

In summer the sea gets a little bit rough at midday (from 12pm to 4 pm), that is why we recommend to book your boat trip early in the morning around 10am or at sunset time (around 6pm depending on the month).

Tip:this amazing website shows you the weather forecast in terms of wind, waves and rain: Windy.com

A good wind would be from 0 kts to 20kts.

A good waves height is from 0 mts to 1,2 mts.

  6. Tips and recommendations

Barcelona is one of the most well-known cities in Spain. The city is famous for its incredible architecture, world-class cuisine, vibrant day- and nightlife, and beautiful beaches. Barcelona is the city of the Sagrada Família and Park Güell. Also, artists such as Picasso and Antoni Gaudí made history in the city. Because the city is located by the sea, a lot of yachts and boats find their way to Barcelona through the Mediterranean Sea. At Direct Berth, we are also a big fan of Barcelona, as it’s a nautical city with a lot of character. Are you thinking about purchasing a berth in Barcelona? Then we’ve got you covered!

The arrivals of yachts over 60 meters and 90 meters significantly increased during that period. Marina Port Vell offers excellent services such as 24-hour security and mooring assistance. Barcelona shines at Christmas

big yacht in barcelona

Christmas lights, fairs and markets

The city's Christmas lights are turned on during the last week of November, marking the beginning of plenty of events and activities around the most magical time of the year. Look up to see iconic streets of Barcelona such as Passeig de Gràcia adorned with elegant displays of light that multiply their beauty. The first step for a first-hand experience of the local Christmas traditions is to visit historic markets where, in addition to enjoying choir performances, storytellers or parades, you can buy original decorative items, fashion accessories, ceramics, jewelry and costume jewelry, typical sweets or even musical instruments. Don't forget to stroll through all of them and take advantage of the opportunity to buy your Christmas gifts. Santa Lucia Fair , found next to the  Barcelona Cathedral , has been held for over 200 years. Other essential references are the Sagrada Familia Fair and the Gran Vía Kings Fair , in which toys play a major role. A more innovative fair is the Port Vell Fair , which is held right in front of Columbus's monument. Visitors can enjoy colourful attractions there, such as musical shows, a traditional merry-go-round, a Christmas tree, lit with over 30 metres of LED lights, a floating nativity scene in the sea and a big wheel. Can you imagine admiring the Christmas panorama of the city from above?

Nativity scene in Barcelona, Catalonia

Live nativity scenes

The representation of the birth of Jesus, in the so-called nativity scenes or cribs, is undoubtedly one of the most traditional and characteristic activities of Christmas in Spain. In Barcelona, places such as the cathedral, the Plaça de Sant Jaume, the town hall, the Frederic Marès Museum or the Pedralbes Monastery install spectacular figurative nativity scenes. In addition, if you visit the Poble Espanyol, you will be able to enjoy, among other Christmas activities, the representation of a living nativity scene. Another option is visiting the forest of the modernist building of the Torre del Suro, in the district of El Guinardó. There is an itinerary where you can discover a living Nativity scene focused on ancient trades and biblical passages whose actors and actresses are part of a project for people with intellectual disabilities.

Copa Nadal competition in Barcelona

Special sporting events

If you want to keep fit during Christmas, you will be able to do so in Barcelona, as you have the opportunity to participate in very special events that combine sport and fun. One of them is the Christmas Cup , the oldest open water swimming event in all of Spain, with an exciting 200-metre course, and which is held on 25 December in Port Vell. In addition, those passionate about running can't miss the race held on 31 December, Cursa dels Nassos , which each year gathers around 11,000 runners on a 10-kilometre circuit across the city streets to bid farewell to the year by breaking records. And to celebrate the first day of the new calendar in a refreshing way, the Barceloneta Swimming Club is organizing a fun group swim in the Mediterranean. Finally, in early January, the International Kings Hockey Tournament takes place, an exciting competition that attracts the best players in the world.

The Three Wise Men at the port of Barcelona

New Year's Eve, The Three Wise Men and music shows

Barcelona's Avenida Maria Cristina is the epicentre of New Year's Eve celebrations. Hundreds of people gather to eat a grape for each of the 12 chimes of the new year, dance and toast with cava under a fireworks display. Many hotels and restaurants in the city organize exclusive parties to celebrate the new year by enjoying the best cuisine. The day after New Year's Eve, one of the traditions to charge your batteries is to enjoy a nice breakfast of churros and hot chocolate in places like the Kings' Fair. Finally, one of the most eagerly awaited events for children is visiting the Three Wise Men from the East, as they come loaded with gifts. Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar arrive in Barcelona by boat on the afternoon of January 5 and star in a parade of spectacular floats and storybook characters that travels through the streets of the city. Barcelona shines more than ever at Christmas and its internationally renowned and prominent music venues, such as the  Palau de la Música Catalana  or the  Liceu celebrate this time of year with a special programme that includes the best melodies, Christmas carols and traditional Christmas compositions.
