Road Town, Tortola
British Virgin Islands
Most people would start with 50 islands and cays, right? Let’s start with the relaxed and chilled atmosphere where liming was invented (drinking/eating and chilling for hours without a defined schedule). It’s the freedom that you can have when sail to bars like Willy T, the optimism and positive energy that you recuperate over the course of your vacation, that’s what makes the BVI special.
You can immediately tell the people who arrived yesterday. Full of stress, solving small things… a bundle of nerves that we turn into after prolonged experience with the “real world.” After a few painkillers (the BVI signature drink) or Frozen Margaritas (Willy T is the place), every pain diminishes and the problems fade away. These same people leave after a week smiling, optimistic and full of energy.
Snorkeling at the Indians, diving the Wreck of Rhone, surfing at Bomba Shack (Capoons Bay) or a visit to The Baths (Virgin Gorda) are the part of charter that provide those memorable moments people have been coming back for.
Bvi yacht charter anchorages.
The secret one are the best. The license plates of the BVI cars say “Nature’s Little Secrets.” That’s spot on. If you want to know some secret spots, talk to our brokers. Get on the chat or inquire about the yachts. Kerry has been the crew of a charter boat in the BVI for over 15 years. Well, let us give you some of the best-known places:)
A place where you must charter is The Baths. This spectacular place will enchant you and you will fall in love with the Baths. What is so special about this place that you have to charter there? The answer is simple: there are few places on earth that are quite so stunningly beautiful and this part of Virgin Gorda is among them. Big rocks settled in the silky soft sand are breathtaking and once you climb through them you will finish in Devils Bay.
Tortola is the largest island in the BVI and home to the capital where your charter most likely will start. The locals are welcoming and the island is home to numerous stunning white sand beaches like Smuggler’s Cove, Trunk Bay, and Cane Garden Bay, perfect for relaxing with a cold drink.
Nanny Cay is located on the south side of Tortola and is home to the modern Nanny Cay Resort & Marina, known for its great drinks and breathtaking sunsets. The area also hosts the renowned Spring BVI Regatta, attracting sailors from around the world.
Soper’s Hole Wharf & Marina , located on the West End of Tortola, is a charming spot for dining, refueling, and shopping, offering a peaceful atmosphere. This part of the British Virgin Islands truly feels like paradise, brimming with the sunny island’s vibrant energy and natural wonders.
One of the main islands is very well known for yacht anchorages. On Jost Van Dyke will find amazing bars, restaurants with the pure Caribbean vibe. Once you come on your yacht charter to White Bay you will not want to leave ever. In the White Bay, the time stopped and you will have so much fun on your charter. Cold famous painkillers with delicious local food, you have to try this little nature secret in this paradise. Make sure to visit the famous Soggy Dollar Bar!!
Norman Island is known as Treasure Island and was the inspiration for the pirate novel of Robert Louis Stevenson. This island is the perfect place where to sail on your yacht charter if you are looking for adventure which may end with found treasure. After snorkeling and exploring the many caves that Norman Island offers, you can sail to Bight for outstanding food in Pirates Bight Restaurant and The Club Restaurant.
Sandy Cay and Spit Island, both tiny uninhabited islands near Jost Van Dyke, offers palm-lined shores and shallow reefs ideal for beachcombing and exploring marine life. Both destinations provide secluded beauty and relaxation, making them must-visit spots during a yacht charter in the British Virgin Islands.
The Indians is a natural wonder and a must-visit destination for anyone on a yacht charter, offering a blend of natural beauty and snorkeling opportunities . This cluster of rugged islets features striking rock formations shaped by the elements. The main attraction is the submerged boulders, known as “The Caves,” providing a captivating underwater landscape.
Accessible by yacht , anchoring in the vicinity opens the door to an immersive experience. Snorkelers can explore vibrant coral reefs and encounter diverse marine life thriving in the crystal-clear waters.
If the BVI is the mecca of yachting, the North Sound should be its capital.
North Sound is located on the north of Virgin Gorda, the primary method of transport there is by boat. It’s a rather secluded location, no doubt by design.
This Billionaire Playground first became popular in the 50s and 60s, thanks to the Washburn family, and gained even more attention in the 70s and 80s. Notably, Sir Richard Branson bought his second island, Moskito Island, here.
North Sound is a hub for sailing, hosting the annual Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous. You can also see people windsurfing and kitesurfing here. Plus, some of the best BVI diving locations , like Mountain Point, Cow’s Mouth, and Paul’s Grotto near Mountain Bay, are found in this area. It’s a playground for the wealthy but also a paradise for anyone who loves the sea and adventure.

Whether you want to learn a little about sailing, indulge in some watersports, experience the low key but lively bars and restaurants dotted around the coast, try your hand at Scuba diving or simply relax and enjoy the peace of the idyllic islands while being cooked and catered for?
The British Virgin Islands are a rare paradise; they are largely unspoilt, and there are hundreds of quiet little coves to explore. If you want a beach to yourself you can certainly find one here!
Likewise, if you want to experience some of the local culture there is plenty to keep everyone entertained, and the more lively beaches such as Cane Garden Bay provide local music, crafts, restaurants and lively bars for those who want to try the famous rum punches and other local cocktails.
A crewed yacht charter means no stress of sailing or navigating, great food cooked for you, and setting your own pace in the privacy of your very own charter yacht. Depending on the size of the boat, the length of the vacation and the number of crew required, organizing your own private charter can actually be less expensive than joining a cruise ship – where you would have to share the boat with hundreds of others!

“Every day held a new and exciting adventure in the BVIs, complete with incredible excursions ashore. We loved exploring the Baths at Virgin Gorda, hiking to the bubbly pool, scootering around Anegada, and playing beach volleyball at the Soggy Dollar. The BVIs have the opportunity to create endless memories; it is almost impossible to pack it all into 10 days there—we will just have to come back! ”

When you take an all inclusive crewed yacht charter in the BVIs, you and your group will enjoy incredible food freshly prepared for you daily. Menus are prepared according to your preferences which we ask for in advance, so your crew can make sure any dietary requirements and special requests are catered for. All our crews have fantastic culinary credentials and prepare meals with great pride. In fact, it is one of the aspects of a crewed BVI yacht charter that is mentioned again and again in client feedback!
The warm Caribbean waters and abundance of marine life make the BVI one of the top 10 destinations for SCUBA diving in the world. Whether you are an experienced diver or complete novice, our yacht charter crews will make sure you are catered for. In fact many of our crewed yachts enjoy the convenience of being equipped for diving, with either a Dive Master or Dive Instructor on board. Those that don’t will be happy to arrange for one of the reputable local dive companies to come and rendezvous with your yacht.
If any of your group would like to dive while on your charter just be sure to mention it when contacting us so we can make the most suitable arrangements.
“ This was the most amazing trip ever. The crew made all attempts to make this an amazing adventure. N othing was to much trouble for Captain Nicolai, Captain Oliver, First mate Gemma and Chef Roma. We were a group of 10 and we all had the same opinion. Our travel to the different ports were very interesting and enjoyable. The meals were so delicious. Chef Roma went above and beyond to prepare the meals. I can’t say enough about this wonderful trip .”

The food was like being in the world’s best restaurants meal after meal for a whole week. The service, the friendliness, everyone’s smile and helpfulness was the icing on a great cake. ”

You’ve made up your mind: your next sailing adventure will be in the Caribbean. The gorgeous waters, gentle trade winds, and sun-drenched islands are calling your name.
While we don’t believe you have to choose ( see here for our argument for combining the two ), it’s true that picking BVI or USVI means you can get a deeper experience when you pick just one.
We’re here to help you better understand the difference between the two, and help you make the choice. Among the team of Waypoints Yacht Charters Specialists, we’ve sailed these waters countless times, dropped anchor in hidden coves, and toasted sunsets from every angle.
Before you set sail on your next yachting adventure, let’s dive into what sets these destinations apart, from the sailing conditions and culture to the natural offerings. Our goal? To help you decide which Virgin Islands – British or U.S. – is the right fit for your next Caribbean sailing escape.
The British Virgin Islands are renowned for their exceptional sailing conditions, making them a favorite among seasoned sailors and newcomers alike.
The archipelago’s layout creates a sailor’s playground, with short passages between islands and abundant sheltered anchorages.
Popular destinations in the BVI include the famous Baths of Virgin Gorda, where massive granite boulders create a labyrinth of grottoes and pools.
The atmosphere of Jost Van Dyke draws visitors to its legendary beach bars, while Norman Island’s caves inspire tales of buried treasure.
Thanks to its history, the BVI offers a unique blend of British and Caribbean culture. Must-experience attractions include:
For those seeking the perfect anchorage, popular spots include:
Hidden gems worth discovering:
If you’ve been thinking about getting to the BVI, now’s the time to start planning for 2025 .
The U.S. Virgin Islands provide a different yet equally special sailing experience. With three main islands – St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix – the USVI offers a mix of developed areas and unspoiled natural beauty.
Sailing conditions in the USVI can be more challenging than the BVI, with longer passages between islands and more exposure to open water.
This makes it an excellent choice for those looking to sharpen their sailing skills. The USVI’s cultural highlights blend American influences with Caribbean traditions.
Must-visit islands and hotspots include
In addition to the main attraction islands, these are a few of our favorite experiences:
For your sailing itinerary, popular routes include:
Off-the-beaten-path gems:
For more on sailing in the USVI, we’ve got a list of our favorite hot spots and hidden gems here .
While both destinations offer Caribbean charm and excellent sailing, key differences set them apart. The BVI tends to have more consistent winds and calmer seas, ideal for leisurely island-hopping. The USVI, with its longer passages, caters to those seeking a bit more adventure in their sailing.
Culturally, the BVI retains a stronger British influence, evident in its customs and traditions.
The USVI, as an American territory, offers a unique blend of Caribbean and U.S. cultures.
For instance, you’ll find cricket matches in the BVI, while American sports are common in the USVI.
The BVI is known for its numerous uninhabited islands and cays, perfect for those seeking seclusion.
In contrast, the USVI offers a mix of bustling ports and untouched natural areas, providing a more varied experience.
The most popular time to visit both the BVI and USVI is during the dry season, from December to April. However, sailing is enjoyable year-round, with the shoulder seasons offering fewer crowds and lower prices. For more on traveling during this period, check out our more extensive article here .
When booking with Waypoints Yacht Charters, you’ll benefit from our expertise in both destinations.
Our team can help you choose between the BVI and USVI based on your sailing experience, desire for cultural experiences, and preference for developed or more secluded areas. Not only that, but we have charter bases in each. Read on to see what you can enjoy at each.
The Waypoints USVI base is located at Frenchtown Marina in St. Thomas, just a 10-minute cab ride from Cyril E. King International Airport (STT). This prime location allows for easy access to the surrounding islands and a quick start to your USVI sailing adventure.
Embarkation begins at noon on the first day of your charter, with sleep aboard options available from 4:00 p.m. The Waypoints team provides comprehensive online briefings prior to your arrival, followed by an in-person review and chart briefing at the base.
Rae Ann A. shares her experience with Waypoints USVI:
“We have been chartering catamarans, both bareboat and crewed, for many years and from many charter companies – in the VI, the Bahamas and Europe. Our bareboat charter experience with Waypoints was the best we’ve ever had, from the initial call with the sales office all the way through to checking back in at the end of our journey. The staff at Waypoints is very professional and also very relaxed and friendly. Everyone went out of their way to give us a great experience.”
The Waypoints BVI base is situated at Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola, providing an excellent starting point for your BVI adventure. Located on the south side of the island, about 3 miles west of Road Town, the base offers easy access to the surrounding islands.
Embarkation begins at noon on the first day of your charter, with sleep aboard options available from 5:00 p.m. The knowledgeable staff conducts thorough yacht briefings, typically lasting 45-90 minutes depending on the vessel size.
Getting to the base is convenient whether you fly into Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) on Tortola or Cyril E. King International Airport (STT) on St. Thomas. From St. Thomas, you can take a ferry to Tortola, with private water taxi options available for a more personalized transfer.

“We had an amazing experience on an 8-day bareboat charter with Waypoints Yacht Charters BVI. I can honestly say this was the best experience I have ever had with a bareboat charter company. Saying this boat was in pristine condition is an understatement. Anthony and his team are absolutely amazing.”
Another client, Peter F., said:
“Just completed a 10-day bareboat sail on Tupelo Honey and had a spectacular time. I cannot say enough praise for this ‘young/new’ company which is run by very experienced professionals who clearly know how to cater to every need for the charter sailor. The equipment is new and clearly well-maintained by very helpful and friendly staff all in a classic BVI setting of the well-positioned full service Nanny Cay Marina. There is no doubt we will be back.”
Whether you choose the British Virgin Islands or the U.S. Virgin Islands, a Caribbean sailing adventure promises plenty of unforgettable experiences. The BVI offers easier sailing and a more laid-back atmosphere, while the USVI provides a mix of American comforts and Caribbean charm.

Sailing Vacations with the personal attention you deserve
Posted on July 17 2019.
Some popular anchorages in the BVI are filled up quickly during the day, so if you want to secure a mooring on your charter, you will normally have to arrive early to find one available for your overnight stay. There is now a new reservation system for mooring balls, which cost a bit more, but makes sure you have a mooring available for you upon arrival. BoatyBall is an App that allows you to reserve and pay for mooring balls located in prime locations throughout the British Virgin Islands.
The beauty of the App is that you can relax and enjoy your visits of other locations during the day and take your time sailing to your next destination, knowing that your overnight mooring is reserved for your yacht. You can arrive at the end of the sailing day between 4 and 5 PM and still know you will have a mooring available!
BoatyBall.com was created to provide boaters with a more secure way to pay, stay, and play. Every BoatyBall mooring has been professionally installed and is in an active maintenance program so you can relax and enjoy your stay. BoatyBall.com has mooring balls in prime locations throughout the British Virgin Islands. BoatyBall.com has moorings that can be reserved through the app and other moorings that are in a first come first serve program.
The mooring balls are bright orange, a different shape, have numbers on them, and will have the BoatyBall logo clearly visible. Current locations of BoatyBall moorings:

This is good if the boatyball moorings are new additional balls and have increased the total number available. If existing moor secure or other moorings have been converted then it is not helpful. If existing moorings have been used then those boats not booking will now have a reduced number of balls to pick up and for them the need to cut their sailing day short to arrive before all the balls are gone just got worse. Could you clarify which is the case. As someone who has sailed the BVI since 1997, and has seen the number of boats increase year on year, additional balls would be most welcome.

Is this really an app, or just a website? I’m searching Google Play and there’s nothing called “Boatyball” in the search results.
