Broward Marine yachts make history in South Florida

Many captains and crew have worked on Broward Marine yachts over the years, and many still do today. In recognition of a long South Florida history of boatbuilding, from military minesweepers to yachts, an installation ceremony is scheduled for a State Florida Heritage Site marker to be installed at Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center on Nov. 12. The marker honors the birthplace of the modern marine industry — and the pioneers at its heart — in Broward County and Fort Lauderdale.

“We are honored, alongside our hardworking marine industry peers, as our families’ collective efforts to build and maintain Fort Lauderdale as an epicenter of the yachting industry are permanently recognized with a Florida Historical Marker — at the very location of the former Broward Marine and our Denison family homesite,” said Ken Denison, a senior broker at Denison Yachting and youngest son of Frank and Gertrude Denison, founders of Broward Marine. “In the 100 years of Broward County’s history, there are only a handful of these sites that pay homage to the pioneers of the yachting industry.”

Notable Broward Marine milestones include:

  • The 1956 launch of the 95-foot Broward M/Y Alisa V , the largest private yacht built in the United States at that time.
  • Full production of an all-aluminum series of Broward motor yachts in the 1970s.
  • The 92-foot M/Y Jervet , the first-ever yacht with triple diesel engines, built by Broward in 1983.
  • Broward’s 112-foot M/Y Britannia , built in the late 1980s with triple Detroit diesels for an unthinkable speed of 43 knots.
  • Completion in the 1990s of the M/Y Pegasus , a 130-foot, triple-engine tri-deck, and the 156-foot M/Y Bubba Too , the largest U.S.-built aluminum vessel at the time.

Other prominent Browards include the 1999 M/Y Cocoa Bean , the 2000 M/Y Aquasition , the 2001 M/Y London Lady , the 2002 M/Y Sigrun , the 2003 M/Y Lady Nancy , and the 2005 M/Y Soulmate .

Please join History Fort Lauderdale, the city of Fort Lauderdale, MIASF (Marine Industries Association of South Florida), Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center, and the Denison family for the installation of the marker at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the east entrance to Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center, 2020 SW 20th St., Fort Lauderdale. The ceremony will be hosted by Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, with the presentation of colors by the Sea Cadets and the U.S. Navy. Light bites and beverages will be served.

Broward Yachts for Sale

is broward yachts still in business

A luxury yacht brand with more than 50 years of experience in building high-quality boats, Broward Yachts was originally known as Broward Marine. Founded in 1948, Broward Marine began by building wooden boats that were of the highest quality and value. During the 1970s Broward Marine embraced the introduction of aluminum and went on to deliver more than 300 custom luxury yachts ranging from 60 (18m) to 164 feet (50m) from the original yard in Fort Lauderdale and second yard in Saugatuck, Michigan. Today the yard is based on America’s east coast in Dania, Florida, where the renowned builders specialize in offering full refit, repair and maintenance services.

Broward Yachts History

Founded in 1948 by Frank Denison, the Fort Lauderdale shipyard Broward Marine began on the site of the former Dooley’s Basin & Dry Dock Company, a Fort Lauderdale shipyard and defense contractor which had closed after the Second World War. During Broward Marine’s first few years the yard successfully built military vessels ranging from 144 (44m) to 173 feet (53m) for the Dutch and US Navy. At the time the yard became the largest private employer in Broward County. After the end of the Korean War, the yard went on to become a service and repair yard and in 1953 the yard launched their first custom wooden motor yacht, the 53-foot (16m) STORMY III, designed by naval architect John Wells. The yard’s primary focus shifted to building custom luxury yachts, and five years later, the 82-foot (25m) JONATHAN III was built for Harry Blum, the then owner of Jim Beam Distilleries.

Broward Marine was originally known for its wooden boats, but in the mid-1970s the two shipyards embraced the introduction of aluminum and soon began building its traditional-looking yachts with the new metal in an all-aluminum series of motor yachts. The 1970s also saw Broward developing the first turbine-powered yacht, the 87-foot (27m) EVON, and in 1976 construction began on a new site on the north bank of the Kalamazoo River. The Michigan facility became so efficient it accounted for almost half of all the Broward yachts built after 1978.

During the latter part of the 20th century, Broward Marine developed a reputation for its high-quality builds and went on to build more than 300 Broward yachts between the original yard and the yard in Saugatuck, Michigan. Operating from the two yards, Broward was able to complete between six and eight builds per annum with as many as a dozen vessels under construction at any one time. At the time, the yacht-building industry was booming and with it came continuous innovations. One such modernization was the first-ever “country kitchen” galley, designed by Mrs. Denison; this remains a popular feature on yachts today. Throughout the proceeding decades, Broward Marine continued to launch many firsts, including the 112-foot (34m) BRITANNIA, which was able to reach speeds of up to 43 knots thanks to her triple Detroit Diesel engines. Then came the 130-foot (40m) tri-deck motor yacht PEGASUS, and in the early 1990s, the 156-foot (48m) BUBBA TOO, which at the time of her build was the largest US-built aluminum vessel ever commissioned.

At the end of the 20th century, Broward Marine was sold to Glenn Straub, and a decade later to Tom Lewis, who changed the name to Broward Yachts and moved all construction to a yard in Dania Beach in Broward County. The yard went on to specialize in the build of custom yachts ranging between 60 (18m) to 164 feet (50m) in length, with incredible performance. They have produced a number of notable yachts since 2000, including the 124-foot (38m) COCO LOCO (now VIVA MAS), which was delivered in 2008. The all-aluminum raised pilothouse with flybridge and an interior design by Evan K Marshall is a popular charter vessel. Today the yard specializes in offering full refit, repair and maintenance services from the shipyard in South Florida.

Broward Yachts may have finished building new custom yachts, but there are many Broward Yachts still cruising and available for charter. For further information on Broward Yachts for sale or to charter a Broward yacht, contact your Northrop & Johnson broker.

About broward yachts.

Broward Shipyard may have ended its building of yachts, but it is still a full-service facility offering a range of marine services. Located in Dania Beach, Florida, the shipyard provides steel, aluminum and fiberglass constructions and repairs; electrical installation and repair; interior design and remodeling; and exterior, interior and bottom painting. As one of the greatest American builders of motor yachts and with a significant history, we felt the need to include Broward in our shipyards category. After all, there are still many Broward yachts cruising the seas.

In 1948 Frank Denison acquired Dooley’s Dry Dock, a Fort Lauderdale shipyard and defense contractor during World War II, building PT boats (Patrol Torpedo). Frank Denison is credited with installing the first diesel engines in a yacht in the mid-1930s. In 1953 he started to operate under the County name Broward Marine and in the first four years, he successfully contracted various military vessels, from 144 feet / 44 meters to 173 feet / 53 meters, for the Dutch and U.S. Navy. Broward Marine became the largest private employer in Broward County. After the end of World War II, Broward Marine shifted its focus back to building custom yachts. The launch of Alisa V established Broward’s position in the world of mega yacht construction, and subsequently the vessels that followed were the start of a tradition of building wooden motor yachts based on the timber lamination techniques. Broward Marine began building some of the finest yachts for the world’s premiere yachtsmen, such as the Jonathan III built for Harry Blum, the founder of Jim Beam Distilleries.

During the 1960s, yacht owners acquired an increased interest in the quality of interiors and the need for interior design. To meet this demand, Broward and his wife, Gertrude Denison, established Yacht Interiors, which became one of the world’s first yacht interior designers. Some notable examples are Jonathan III of 1959, The Dorisam of 1963, and The Heather of 1965.

By the mid-1970s, Broward switched from the construction of wooden yachts to the full production of an all-aluminum series of motor yachts. Another first took place in 1973 when Broward Marine developed the first turbine-powered yacht, the 87-foot / 27-meter EVON.

XOXO - 111' Broward Pilothouse 1997/2022 Owner Stateroom

In 1976, construction began in Saugatuck, Michigan on Broward’s Michigan boatbuilding operation. The Michigan facility became so efficient that it accounted for over 40% of all the Browards built after 1978. The first Michigan-built Broward, BROWNIE’S II, was launched. Operating two boatbuilding facilities allowed Broward to complete between 6 and 8 vessels per year with as many as 10 to 12 vessels under construction at any one time. Innovations in yachting continued rapidly in the 1980s, as Mrs. Denison designed the first-ever “Country Kitchen” galley, which remains an extremely popular feature on yachts today. Also, in 1983, Broward built the first-ever yacht with triple diesel engines the 92’ JERVET. By the late 1980s, another Broward innovation in yacht building was on the drawing board: the 112-foot / 34-meter BRITANNIA. Her triple Detroit Diesel 16V92 engines with two outboard engines utilizing variable pitch Ulstein drives and the center engine, powering a Riva Calzoni Jet drive, powered her ahead at an unthinkable 43 knots.

The early 1990s saw the commissioning of BRITANNIA, then PEGASUS, a 130-foot / 40-meter triple-engine tri-deck. By the early 1990s, Frank Denison was looking to go larger, and he accomplished this with the 1996 156foot / 48-meter BUBBA TOO. At the time BUBBA TOO was commissioned it was the largest U.S.-built aluminum vessel. Over time, approximately 300 Broward yachts (ranging from 60 feet / 18 meters to 165 feet / 50 meters) have been successfully launched and delivered to their owners.

The company exchanged hands with various owners over the years. In July 2009 a new company was incorporated, Broward Shipyard Inc., by Bruce and Chris Moore at the Dania Beach location.

112 Broward Motoryacht Walkthrough [Boat Review + Video]

Take an extensive tour of the 112 broward [lady sharon gale] in st. thomas, usvi with will noftsinger..

This article is a transcription of the 112 Broward video from Denison’s Youtube Channel . Tune in daily to discover the latest yacht video walkthroughs from the world’s largest yacht video collection. Watch the full video below:

The Denison family is really a storybook in our industry. In 1948 Frank Denison came down from Michigan and purchased a yard in Fort Lauderdale that became Broward Marine which is one of the most storied yards in American shipbuilding. In total Broward built almost 300 yachts and today I get the privilege of bringing you one of those 300. I’m Will Noftsinger with Denison Yachting and this is LADY SHARON GALE.

This is a 112 Broward Motoryacht delivered to her first owner in 1999. There’s a ton of innovations on board that Broward really became known for. Something like the wide body that you see behind me giving you a massive amount of interior volume, the country kitchen that keeps your galley up on the main deck and gives your group another space to gather and relax. All while delivering generous room in a 4 cabin 5 head layout that includes a full beam master suite. LADY SHARON GALE also has a few things that most comparable Browards. Don’t this versatile cockpit here on the aft deck and MTU engines which is something we really need to highlight because most of these yachts have Detroit diesels and that’s something we’ll touch on later.

You can see right now that davit is in the vertical position, it’s getting serviced right now and ready for a charter. We’re going to do our best to work around that. I’m excited to get on board and show you guys exactly what makes them so special and why something like a cockpit is one of the best features you’re ever going to have on a yacht.

We’re going to dive right in here on the aft deck and check out this cockpit. This is one of the only ones that was built this way. You’ve got excellent access to all your water sports, so if you want to do your paddle boards or get your dive gear ready. This provides an awesome platform to get that stuff ready. We’re going to take a little bit of a closer look at this cockpit. We’ve got huge storage below us and probably one of my favorite features is a deep freeze right here. You don’t have to go all the way inside to take all your cold stuff in. It’s right there conveniently located. Just next to it, we’ve got access to our engine room that takes us down to the crew quarters and the MTUs. And on this side we’ve got a sink, prep area and drop in storage. It also doubles as a cooler. Rounding out the cockpit, I’ve got shore power cords to either side and cap stands for docking. Let’s go check out the aft deck. And what an awesome aft deck it is. It’s super spacious, has a lot of great features like this built-in bench seating, the wet bar behind me and you’ve got a really unique staircase. This spiral setup is something I’ve never seen on another boat before and I really like the fact we got the upgrades of LED lighting and brand new sound system.

is broward yachts still in business

Broward did an excellent job when they designed this flybridge. It’s got four features that are super prominent and most boats don’t have them all. The first feature is the tinder storage which is located aft. The nautical structures davit can launch either of these two sea-doo wave runners and with the 2000 pound capacity, you’ve got the option for different toy configurations that might be more suitable for your program. The second and most prominent is this Jacuzzi it makes or breaks most flybridge Motoryachts especially if you’re going to take it on charter. The third must-have of a fly bridge is functional guest space. The crew has their wet bar to starboard with a sink, fridge, ice maker and all the storage needed to prep the table for guests. An aspect that makes Browards more appealing than most of their competitors is the customization factor. Soft decor can be changed and it’s common to see throughout the lives of these yachts. LADY SHARON GALE is no different and has seen several. The appeal lies in the ability to make this blank canvas something new that you can call your own.

And finally the fourth feature is a well laid out helm station. Captain Mark has a new Furuno TZ touch display at his fingertips located at both helms not just here. We also have two Simrad autopilots, access to the Nyad hydraulic bow thruster, Nyad stabilizer controls, MTU displays, VHF radios and anything else possible for captain Mark to move this ship. The last feature to point out up here are these two wing stations located at port and starboard.

Let’s follow the hardtop back past the Jacuzzi down the stairs and into the salon. This is one of the more marquee design features you’re going to find on any Broward. When they did the wide body, it gave you the ability to customize a space that really feels like an apartment. These guys decided to upgrade their floors and gave it this distressed tile feel but it’s an amazing space that you can make your own. Thanks to all the freestanding furniture. And right now you get the full dramatic effect. Pushing the walls out, eliminating the walk-arounds gives us this massive feel. Seating in the aft section of the salon, storage along both sides outboard for the dining table’s cutlery and glassware. With another wet bar just forward equipped with a fridge, ice maker, sink and most notably the 80 inch smart TV located above.

is broward yachts still in business

We’re going to continue forward here. As we walk forward on the starboard side this takes me to the foredeck. This right here is a super important dayhead and this takes me to the pilothouse. But for now let’s check out this country kitchen which is a name that Broward pretty much trademarked. If you look around, we have tons of space. This feels like a kitchen in somebody’s home. Full size appliances, I can’t emphasize enough how important that is. Specked out to be able to fit in a home. So you don’t have to custom order anything, should you want to change anything. A cooktop with a stainless steel hood something not found on most yachts. Beautiful granite countertops, dishwasher, trash compactor and a wine cooler.

Forward in the galley is a little breakfast nook which really is what constitutes as a country kitchen. Having this area to hang out while the chef’s cooking, keeps the family together while you’re relaxing in the morning. This little breakfast nook is where I had my coffee this morning and it’s awesome for the crew. Something we got to highlight before we continue on is a control 4 system. I can do anything to change the lighting, to the sound system, even check the weather with a simple push of a button. There’s also a panel on the salon as well as all the staterooms which we’ll check out in a little bit. Forward and the starboard of the galley, we have access down to the VIP stateroom. This is yet another aspect that I love about this layout. It’s completely secluded from the rest of the boat very generous for a VIP with space for the queen berth forward, entertainment system, storage throughout it even has a desk and a walk-in closet with the ensuite head on the opposing side.

is broward yachts still in business

Moving back where we came from to the main deck there’s access to the side deck which brings us forward to the bow. This section of the yacht is totally dedicated to lounging. Not only do you have this space here but up a few steps there’s an even larger sun pad with an elevated view for amazing sunsets or viewing while you cruise. Another item to mention on the bow is your ground tackle and this one features two Maxwell 4500 series windlasses. So Broward like we’ve talked about the entire time on this boat does an amazing job of giving you huge space. So we’re going to go down check out the 2 guest state rooms and the master stateroom. Let’s see those you’re going to be really impressed about how much space you get. Let’s go.

All right so we’re coming down here to the master stateroom which is forward but first we’re going to check out these two aft staterooms. Let’s step in the port side first. You guys get a good look at exactly what I love about these staterooms. There’s two beds. Sometimes I enjoy staying in this bed and my wife and this one so that I can get out easily and hit the head if I need to without interrupting her. If you have kids, excellent spot for the kid to stay. You guys can stay here and you still have easy access to your own ensuite head. On top of that we got tons of drawer storage here and a nice TV that pops out so you can watch it from any part of the room and a huge closet so you can store all your clothes for any kind of trip you go on.

is broward yachts still in business

So we’re going to check out the other stateroom which is a mirror image of this one. One thing we’ll point out because we didn’t do it over there is that both rooms like every room in this boat, carry a control 4 system audio visual all the tip of your fingers right here. We’re going to check out the master stateroom, that’s what everybody’s been waiting for. Before we do that just a quick note, washer dryer here both by Electrolux and they’re brand new. Nice to have that for your stew to be able to do all the bedding and whatnot in here. You’re going to see a really nice full beam master stateroom. You got a his and hers closet. Both of them have automatic lights, tons of storage hang all your stuff for the weekend getaway. You got the same thing on the other side and LG smart TV, watch Netflix, watch the game whatever you want. We also have a nice refrigerator here. So you can have any beverages you wish while you’re watching TV. A few steps aft his and hers heads that each have access to the walk-in shower at the center encased in glass. The crew quarters and the power plant of LADY SHARON GALE are accessed here in the center of this cockpit. Let’s go check that out next.

On the starboard side, we’ve got a full walk-in head and a full walk-in shower that all three of these crew quarters accommodate. On the port side, we have two staterooms. This is a single and just four to that we have two over unders. On the starboard side, we have the captain’s quarters and separating those is a full washer dryer.

So we’re here in the engine room that’s the next stop on today’s tour. It’s a little loud because you’re going to hear the chillers and the engine room blower we just got back from a trip. But that’s what happens after you shut down your 16V 2000s which you can see on either side of me. Awesome access for any mechanics that need to do any work get to your generators which you have two of 55 kW northern lights generators, more than capable of powering the entire boat. We’ve also got brand new Mach 5 pumps for everything in the boat and brand new chillers. So everything stays ice cold and something that really rounds out this room is that we have displays and they’re both brand new from MTU. So if anybody’s down here they can see exactly what’s going on with everything on these engines.

is broward yachts still in business

At 1000 RPM we’re burning just 22 gallons an hour and that delivers a speed of 10 knots. And with a reported fuel capacity of 7 500 gallons that gives us an economical range of almost 3000 nautical miles. Earlier we mentioned that it’s super important that this yacht’s got MTUs instead of Detroit diesels. Well, let me tell you exactly why. Even though the Detroit diesels were great motors back in their time, the parts are coming harder to find and service can be difficult. It’s nice to have a company as powerful as MTU behind you, a 100% worth having.

Thanks for joining us aboard today’s tour on LADY SHARON GALE . My wife Karie and I would love an opportunity to come back to St. Thomas and show you this boat behind me. Please contact us anytime.

Probably the biggest strong suit of the boat is the fact that you could just make this boat yours and not have to sit there and work within the confines of what most yachts are. You just have a shell you have a great shell to operate on. That’s probably the biggest strong suit of a Broward.

Gone But Not Forgotten- The Boat Brands We Loved That Are No More (Part 9)

The motoryacht movement with maxum, meridian, carver & marquis.

Meridian 580 Pilothouse

In my over forty years in the pleasure boat industry, there have been literally thousands of boat companies and brand names of boats in North America.

Some of these were and are strictly regional brands not known or recognized in the rest of the continent but many were national and even international brands known to most of us diehard boaters.

It is those well known and recognized brands that are no longer with us that I look forward to examining in this series. These brand names may still be corporately held in reserve but are not known to currently be in production.

In 1986, the Boat Group division of Brunswick Corporation , makers of Mercury outboard motors and MerCruiser sterndrive engines, purchased Sea Ray boats. They quickly followed up in the same year with the purchase of Bayliner . Both Sea Ray and Bayliner had been vying back and forth for a few years as to which was the largest pleasure boat manufacturer in the world. Now Brunswick would undoubtedly be number one.

{Big-Box-Banner}

Sea Ray and Bayliner had also been perceived, rightly or wrongly by the boating industry, and more importantly by the boating public, as representing not necessarily the extremes, but relative opposite ends of the pleasure boat market in terms of desirability, price point, and quality. It was akin in those days to the positioning of General Motors and the Buick vs. Chevrolet argument.

is broward yachts still in business

Based on this market perception, Brunswick thought there may be room for a boat brand positioned between Sea Ray and Bayliner, just as General Motors had Pontiac and Oldsmobile positioned between its other two brands. Just two years after the acquisition of Sea Ray and Bayliner, in 1988 Brunswick created the Maxum brand for exactly that purpose.

Building out of a Bayliner facility in Pipestone, Minnesota, in 1989 Maxum Marine offered eight models from 16-23 feet. Growth as well as market acceptance of Maxum was slow, as many Maxum hulls were the same as Bayliner hulls but with different decks and inner liners. The public was confused. As Maxum offerings grew in size to include mid-cabin express cruisers and eventually full cruisers, production facilities were added in Salisbury, Maryland.

In 1999, ten years after its formation, Maxum was offering 18 models from 18-46 feet. This was a prelude to a 2000 news conference when Maxum introduced its all new “curvy and sexy-looking” 3500 SCR cruiser, the first Maxum to be designed independently from Bayliner with a distinct brand identity and independence.

Maxum 3000 SCR

In that news conference, Dave Heiss, Maxum’s Manager of Advertising and Marketing, said, "Now we can grow each brand's personality independent of the other." Production was extended to include facilities in Valdosta, Georgia and Miami, Oklahoma. Unfortunately, it seems that maybe the 10 years of public perception and confusion between brands had solidified in the marketplace because Maxum did not perform as anticipated. In 2001, the Valdosta facilities were sold and the Miami, Oklahoma facility closed down as the events of 9/11 resulted in a severe downturn in the pleasure boat industry.

Maxum announced a re-invigoration of its lineup in 2002 but it was too little, too late. By 2009, it had cut back its product offerings to 12 models from 18-37 feet. But damage had also been done by the horrendous financial downturn of 2008 and, after a 20-plus year run, Maxum boats were discontinued in 2009.

1999 Maxum 4100 SCB

The downturn in Maxum sales in 2001 was reflected in almost the entire industry, including almost across the board in the Brunswick Boat Group. Bayliner was building over 50 models in five series of boats and its sales were hit hard. It was also building larger and larger boats up to almost 60 feet and not paying enough attention to the smaller boats in its lineup that had always been its winning formula.

2002 was the final year for Bayliner Motoryachts. In 2003, Brunswick launched its Meridian line of yachts out of Bayliner’s old yacht and former headquarters location in Arlington, Washington. Meridian started with the old Bayliner lineup of seven models of sedans, flybridges, and pilothouse motoryachts from 34-58 feet, with the direction and intention of gradually re-tooling the lineup.

2005 Meridian 580 Pilothouse

This would include not only new and more aggressive designs but also new materials and hardware to bring the Meridian brand closer to Sea Ray and its perception quality. All Meridian models were equipped with Brunswick’s new Docking on Command™ system of utilizing bow and stern thrusters under a single control.

Sales rebounded under the new direction but the financial downturn of 2008 caused more rationalization of Brunswick’s facilities, including the closing of the Arlington plant and all Meridian production moving to Florida. In 2011, it was claimed that Meridian had the best selling sedan and flybridge cruisers in the United States for the past five years.

It was not enough, though, and by 2018 Brunswick Corp. announced the end of not only Meridian Yachts but also the yacht and sport yacht models of Sea Ray. It must be noted here that both Bayliner and Sea Ray continue to this day both as major manufacturers of pleasure boats.

As a post-script, while we are dealing with Bayliner and its many changes in product lines over the years, there are a couple of series (at least) that have come and gone over the years – series that many boaters will remember with fondness.

2016 Meridian 441 Sedan

One series is the Avanti series of more upscale mid-cabin express cruisers and flybridge boats from 29-40 feet from the years 1987 to 1999. The second series is a personal favourite of mine and one that has attracted almost a cult-like following from long-range cruisers. That series is the Pilothouse Motoryacht models 4588, 4788, 5288, and 5788 built in various of those lengths between 1985 and 2002, and of course continued under Meridian in 2003 and until model changes were made.

It is difficult for me to believe that Carver Yachts , one of the most popular and recognizable motor yacht brands found almost everywhere for decades might no longer be with us. It was said to have closed its doors permanently in mid-2021. Its huge production facilities in Pulaski, Wisconsin, which it shared with Marquis Yachts, was almost simultaneously purchased by KCS International, parent company of Cruisers Yachts of nearby Oconto, Wisconsin.

Charlie Carter and George Verhagen put the three first letters of each of their last names together to create the “Carver” name in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1954. Their first designs were mahogany planked runabouts. As sales grew, in 1956 they moved operations to Pulaski, a short distance northwest of Green Bay.

In the 1960’s, Carver recognized the growing consumer demand for “family-sized” overnighters and built roomy boats to satisfy that market. It recognized the growing demand for flybridge models as well. By 1971, Carver was offering seven models from 21-31 feet, all of which were built from wood.

By the mid-70's, Carver introduced fiberglass hulls but still with wooden superstructures. It first introduced its Mariner series at this time, one of the roomiest boats on the market with loads of indoor living space all on one level. It also came with a huge flybridge which had the only helm control station. The Carver 33-Mariner of the 1970’s satisfied both consumer boating needs and was a huge sales success. The Mariner series expanded over the years while keeping its original successful design philosophies.

1983 Carver 3207 Aft Cabin

By the 1980’s, Carver had grown worldwide into a major builder of what became referred to as motor yachts. The 32 and 36 flybridge aft cabin motor yachts became synonymous with Carver as boat owners enjoyed the privacy of an aft cabin stateroom with a private head compartment, while guests slept at the extreme other end of the boat in the bow.

In 1985, Carver was purchased by Miramar Marine Corp which soon added another production facility in North Carolina. Carver then started building Miramar’s new acquisition of Californian Yachts and offering them through its vast worldwide dealer network. In 1990, Carver offered a substantial lineup of 30 models from 22-55 feet including six Californian models. Sales topped out over $200 million.

The federal luxury tax of early 1991 along with an economic turndown almost crippled Carver. Buyout specialist Irwin Jacobs worked his magic and by the end of the year had assembled Miramar along with Carver into his Genmar Industries. A few years later, this became Genmar Holdings, Inc. which evolved into one of the world’s largest pleasure boat manufacturers.

In 1992, Genmar purchased Trojan Yachts of Pennsylvania and moved the tooling and molds to Pulaski to build the yachts there. Trojan’s lineup ranged from 30-46 foot express and sport cruisers, but unfortunately it did not last long. California Yachts was sold. Meanwhile, Carver started to rebound under new management and with the repeal of the luxury tax a year later.

The late-90's saw consumer demand wanting luxurious interior accommodations and Carver was happy to oblige. By the end of the 1990’s it introduced its ultra-luxurious 53 and 57 Voyager Pilothouse motor yachts with their ”skylounge” helm station with powered Captain’s chair, huge flybridge, solid finished cherrywood cabinetry throughout, leatherette furniture, and plush carpeting.

2002 Carver Voyager Pilothouse 57'

Following this success, Carver saw the need for even more luxury and better sales in European and offshore markets. In 2002, it started working with the Italian design team of Nuvolari & Lenard. This resulted in Carver building new upscale European designed Nuvari yachts from a new facility in Fano, Italy. With this background, in 2004, Carver created Marquis Yachts as an even more upscale line with European influences built in the Pulaski facilities. Originally, Marquis offered two models, the 59-foot and 65-foot motor yachts, and their success led to a full line from 42-72 feet.

In the same year, 2004, the Genmar Holdings, Inc. portfolio included 18 boat brands, but the financial crisis of 2008 had a devastating cumulative effect resulting in its bankruptcy. At the subsequent auction in 2010, Platinum Equity Group purchased the bulk of the brands, while Irwin Jacobs and a partner purchased Carver and Marquis Yachts. Shortly thereafter they added the Larson group to form the Marquis-Larson Boat Group consisting of six brands: Marquis, Carver, Larson, Larson FX, Larson Escape, and Striper.

is broward yachts still in business

After all of these changes, Carver tried to revitalize itself with some striking new designs which didn’t catch on with the market. In 2019, Larson, FX, Escape, and Striper were sold to the Polaris Group. For 2021, Carver was offering only six models from 34-52 feet, none of which had any resemblance to the Carver models which had excelled in the marketplace in the past.

Carver and Marquis were closed in summer of 2021. The extensive Pulaski manufacturing facilities were purchased by KCS International of nearby Oconto, the parent company of Cruisers Yachts, builders of 16 models from 33-60 feet. This company was then almost immediately purchased by MarineMax , the largest recreational boat dealership company with a hundred locations worldwide. Cruisers Yachts continues to excel.

Better question.... why not pose this in the Broward forum? This thread has been moved to the same. You would find the answer if you bothered to look. Please use the search button before starting new threads. Thread closed.
I was suspect you were in the business and now I've confirmed the same. Let's understand something... YF was NOT established for you to conduct market research. If you have something to contribute, or you have a question that hasn't been asked multiple times, then by all means post a new thread. But posting questions without conducting a search is disrespectful of other members, who take time out from their schedules to help people with a genuine interest in the passion we share. Read: not those with vested interests! And finally, posing questions "like a buyer"... when in fact you work in a brokerage capacity... is FRAUD! Not only do we frown on this conduct, we expose it.
