THE REBRANDING

Cannes Yachting Festival is the stage for Nautor Swan to unveil its new brand image.

Nautor’s Swan will become Nautor Swan when the iconic yacht company reveals its new brand identity at Cannes Yachting Festival next month.

Since the brand was born in 1966, it has embodied Performance, Innovation, Quality, Elegance, and Reliability. These values are embedded in the brand’s DNA and are reflected in the logo with its clean and elegant rectangular shape. From 1988 when Leonardo Ferragamo bought the yard, Nautor began its journey to becoming an international 360° brand that accompanies its clients throughout their yachting journey. With the support of creative agency, M&C Saatchi, the Nautor Swan logo comes of age. The new design follows a natural evolution of the brand, adopting a more contemporary and dynamic font and colour, and featuring a more current typographical approach. While remaining true to the Nautor Swan heritage, the brand identity that will emerge remains consistent and representative of the company’s values. The iconic swan – the bird – that has featured within the logo since 1966 will become subject to a separate new redesign project led by aspiring young designers from top international universities.

Nautor Swan will take under its wing: the Swan yachts division, the build of the brand’s iconic models, and ClubSwan that provides dedicated services to Swan Owners.

The new Swan logo will encompass its famous Bluewater cruiser – Swan, in addition to the full product range that includes the Swan Maxi, ClubSwan and Swan Shadow.

ClubSwan will comprise ClubSwan Racing, the sports division, and ClubSwan The Club that provides dedicated services to Swan Owners, delivered by a team of skilled professionals.

This evolution paves the way to a wider range of Services that the brand can offer, including to non-Swan owners, such as the Nautor Swan Global Service and Nautor Swan Charter and Brokerage dedicated to all owners worldwide in need of assistance or guidance.

The strategy behind the rebranding is further strengthened by the new visual identity of the Nautor Swan advertising campaign. The new claim which embodies the brand DNA carries the promise to always epitomise the spirit of sailing, and to always strive for improved quality, style and uncompromising reliability. A Swan is A Swan.

SWAN 55 – WORLDWIDE PREMIÈRE

The Swan 55 makes her début at Cannes Yachting Festival, together with her bigger sisters, the Swan 58, which was introduced to the world last year and the Swan 78 with a beautiful grey hull.

Designed by Germàn Frers interior design by Misa Poggi, the new Swan 55 represents a new generation of hull design developed over the past couple of years with the assistance of the latest tools available today to study the behavior of the canoe body in all sailing conditions. The interior has been designed having in mind maximum comfort for long periods, both under sail and at anchor. For style and finishing the new Swan 55 features four different moods: Swan Soul which embodies the typical Swan ambiance, Scandi Vision for a more northern atmosphere, Blue Genoa paying homage to the colours of the ocean and more traditional seafaring and Velvet Vibe for a more passionate owner,

The Swan 55 is available, together with Swan 58 and Swan 78, for visits in Port Canto, where guests are welcomed at the Nautor Swan’s stand, located in Sail 183. The stand, coming from the art direction of the Genovese Architect Misa Poggi, is an interpretation of the values of the brand in line with the new image and the new Nautor Swan blue.

During this edition of Cannes Yachting Festival together with the Architect, Nautor Swan is partnering with very exclusive brands: Ethimo, the Italian Company specialized in high quality outdoor furniture, creates an enjoyable balancing act based on the concepts of beauty, design, functionality, quality and “Made in Italy”, decorating the stand with its iconic collection in natural teak and a selection of innovative fabrics; Heirloom’s Linen to décor the yachts, combining the finest materials and traditional craftsmanship to create luxury linens of exceptional quality and lasting beauty. Bottega Conticelli with its luxury leather accessories, with a unique style and quality, representing the Italian excellence as part of the décor. To make the experience more enjoyable, the guests can taste a wide selection of Lavazza coffees.

NAUTOR’S SWAN IS GOING GREENER

Over the last two years, Nautor’s Swan has been working to develop a factual and effective sustainability policy and set of solutions to improve respect for the planet through the whole lifecycle and experience of Swan yachts. The approach is called “Green & Blue”.

The first step of the green approach is sailing itself, by definition one of the most sustainable methods of transportation. With over 2,000 Swans still sailing, their legendary durability is indisputable. From the resilience of the materials used to produce them to their fast and efficient hulls, maximising range over energy consumption, Nautor has been a green champion since the beginning. The second step of the “Green & Blue” approach is that propulsion is a key part of making a yacht greener, but it’s not the only one: recovering green energy from the environment, using less water, reducing plastic usage and waste impact add to the overall sustainability of life onboard. For this purpose, a wide set of green friendly options have been developed and can be chosen by the owners while configuring a “greener” yacht.

Solar panels, hydrogeneration systems (stand alone, or propulsion integrated with a variable pitch propeller), and wind generators are available tools for CO2 free energy collection, to be stored in state-of-the art Li-ion dedicated battery systems. Efficient water makers and the Quooker water system provide still and sparkling drinkable water, encouraging the elimination of plastic bottles and packaging. Macerators and compactors for waste impact minimisation. Last but not least, cork decks are available to replace teak, upon request. A great example of the sustainable commitment is the new Swan 88.

The first unit will be equipped with a special co-developed version of the well-proven Torqeedo’s Deep Blue serial hybrid system. Deep Blue includes a whole-yacht power management system with variable pitch propeller which allows you to generate power while sailing. The system automatically optimizes the hydrogeneration performance based on your sailing speed, then stores the generated power in 4×40 kWh Deep Blue batteries. All this will allow the yacht up to 10 hours of silent hotel load usage and up to 7.5 kn of full electric cruising. For backup power and off-shore recharge, 2×50 kW high power density diesel generators are installed.

Nautor specific partnership with Torqeedo will provide two dedicated Deep Blue serial hybrid propulsion platforms: one for large yachts, already available on Swan 88 and now being implemented on Swan 78 and for the smaller yachts, namely Swans 48, 55 and 58, there is a dedicated electric shaft propulsion modular package ranging from 50 to 100 kW. ZF has been jointly involved with Torqeedo for this development. To complete the range of applications for the upper part of the range that includes maxis larger than 100ft, specific and confidential new developments are ongoing with premium market players, like Siemens and RTN-Auxilia.

SWAN 48 MKII

A Swan model is alive even after years of production. Listening to customers, captains, testing and experiencing Swan’s boats continuously, both cruising and racing, the yard evolves and improves the models constantly. Stating this, after more than 50 units sold of the iconic Swan 48, the team at Nautor collected a number of improvements to be converted in standard items that led to Swan 48 MKII.

On the deck the innovations include a new bowsprit design, new chainplates position, the coachroof features a new design for windows. The opening transom door is operated with a system of new hydraulic pistons to enhance functionality. The interiors feature an innovative Corian design with rounded corners, lower galley curved joinery style, a more comfortable sofa design with enhanced storage volumes and some other optional additions to further add even more comfort onboard.

CLUBSWAN 41

With a well-established Swan One Design Circuit and a high participation of ClubSwan Yachts in the established regattas, Nautor Swan gives a new boost to the range by introducing the ClubSwan 41. Designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian, the ClubSwan 41 project has been announced at the Cannes Yachting Festival and at the 21st edition of the Rolex Swan Cup – the iconic event organized by Nautor, together with YCCS and Rolex, where Swan owners belonging to every “era” of the brand’s 56 years are providing a beautiful spectacle in how Nautor has evolved during this period. The brand-new ClubSwan 41 is at the cutting edge of contemporary yacht design, she is a perfect crossover: a full racer able of competing in the most captivating races worldwide and with the possibility to offer a ‘sport-cruising’ experience.

The yacht has been conceived as a One Design package, as per Nautor’s expertise in this segment, which includes a professionally managed Class and she will be able to take part in the dedicated Swan One Design Circuits, such as The Nations League and the Swan One Design Worlds. Importantly, she is also being conceived to be competitive under ORC Cat. B. so will relish participating in the most important rating regattas around the world, providing an exciting range of racing possibilities for Owners. For this innovative project, Nautor Swan’s in-house experts and Juan K are combining forces with a leading team of professionals in the field. Pure Design & Engineering has been entrusted for the engineering, while the interior design comes from the drawing tables of Lucio Micheletti, Micheletti+Partners. Both companies proved to deliver high-end result in previous projects with Nautor, both in racing and cruising segments.

THE POWERYACHT DIVISION IS WELCOMING A NEW MEMBER: SWAN OVERSHADOW

The launch of the Swan Shadow last year, marked the completion of the Nautor Swan product range by presenting a multi-purpose motor yacht concept that is able to meet multiple needs. This year the Swan Shadow sees the birth of a sister, the “inboard” version – Swan OverShadow. The new design is based on the same concept as the Swan Shadow which is particularly efficient and seaworthy. In addition to the big difference – the choice of inboard or outboard engine, the layout presents two alternative variants on and below deck to give more space and livability onboard for longer trips.

Designed by Jarkko Jamsen, the Swan OverShadow, is widening the range of uses of the boat from a day cruise boat to a longer weekend get-aways. The overall style follows the same design DNA as the original outboard version, with a strong connection to Nautor Swan sailing yacht heritage at the core of the design.

Nautor's Swan Yachts

Nautor's Swan is a Finish yacht building company which produces high quality luxury Swan sailing yachts.  Oy Nautor AB is based in Jakobstad and is primarily famous for its Swan line of composite yachts.  The company was founded in 1966 by Pekka Koskenkylä whose intention was to build the first 10m yacht using a fiberglass mould, which was capable of both cruising and racing. Quality has been at the heart of the Nautor's Swan ideal and the core focus of the yacht production process throughout their history.

Nowadays Nautor's Swan yachts are often acknowledged to be the finest of all production sailing yachts.  They are designed to sail well and can often be considered cruiser/racers, offering luxury, comfort and performance.  Here is a video of a swan racing to windward.  There has been some famous names involved in the design of the various Swan models such as Sparkman & Stephens , German Frers and Ron Holland .  Owning a swan is a commonly shared ambition amongst enthusiasts  of the yachting world.

Nautor's Swan is composed of four neighboring complexes near Pietersaari, in Finland, and year after year, the successful sailing yacht builder continues to grow.  Nautor's Swan now employs over four hundred and seventy workers in more than 34,000 sq meters of yard space. The 1000th Swan was launched in 1981 and she was a Swan 51.  The harsh climate and long winters dictate the construction of well-insulated spaces, inside which conditions are always kept at ideal levels of temperature and humidity.

Lot 99: Inside the first Nautor’s Swan 95S sailing yacht

Captain Lorenzo Giacomuzzi is reluctant to hoist the sails. We’re on passage from Villefranche to Monaco in the first of a new line of Swan 95s, and the winds are light. “We can get the sails out, but we’re not going to go anywhere,” he tells me. I know the skipper is anxious to get to Port Hercules by midday, but I haven’t flown all the way down from Hamburg simply to motor around in Lot 99 , one of the world’s sleekest, newest production superyachts from Finnish maestro Nautor’s Swan .

Five minutes later, we’re outpacing the true wind on a beat. The engine is off at last and the boat touches five knots of hull speed — not bad in four knots of limpid breeze. “She needs eight to 10 knots to get going properly,” Giacomuzzi persists.

To prove his point, he tells me the story of the shakedown cruise from the yard in Finland to Portugal, with the owner aboard. “The owner said, ‘let’s test the boat and see whether we can break something’. We were reaching along at 17 knots in up to 30 knots of wind. You feel nothing until you feel a ‘bang’, so I’d press a button and suddenly realise there were four or five tonnes of load in the rig.” But did they break anything? Giacomuzzi shakes his head. “It was cool, but not relaxing!”

More impressive, to my eyes, is the speed with which the captain converted the boat from motor to sail mode. The innovative lifting keel took a minute or so to ease down on its hydraulics, using a remote control in the saloon. Then the mainsail went up on a single push button, and the jib unfurled silently. It was a simple task for the skipper and his first mate — one that belied the hours of calibration and sea trials needed to match the furler speed to the halyard rate.

And herein lies the key to this beautiful €10 million expanse of carbon fibre wizardry and careful interior design: she is incredibly simple to handle. The owner, who upsized from a Swan 66, is a Dutchman who loves cruising, but can’t bear to go slowly.

So he hasn’t held back when it comes to features that improve performance (starting with the high-tech carbon fibre-foam sandwich hull and lifting keel), but he has balanced every performance decision against the need to remain offshore for weeks, far away from the shipyards and repair facilities of Europe.

“One of the main points of the owner’s brief from the start was to build a real cruising boat to go around the world, but with the look, feel and heart of a Swan,” says Giacomuzzi. “The owner actually enjoys the long ocean crossings.”

For this reason, he picked the raised saloon (S) version of the 95 off the drawing board. Naval architect Germán Frers also designed a “flush deck” (FD) version of the 95 intended for the race circuit, which carries around a tonne less weight (thanks to the smaller coachroof).

Frers has designed every cruising yacht for Swan since 1981, and his signature is everywhere: the near straight sheerline, plumb bow and reverse transom, and the long, elegant cockpit open at the transom. The deck design, he says, favours “simpler, cleaner, uncluttered arrangements and sun protection options”.

Everywhere on board are signs that the owner is a cruiser with a taste for speed, from the carbon detailing to the tender garage . “The furling boom, for instance, is one part of this logic,” explains Kristian Kjellman, Swan’s project manager for the 95. “The owner is himself a good sailor, and has friends who are good sailors. However, they didn’t want hassle with big sails and reefing, so they could keep the crew reduced.”

In line with the 3Di sails, the high-aspect mast and boom by Hall Spars are carbon fibre, as well as the winch drums and the pedestals. You wouldn’t know it, under the expanse of teak decking that runs from the companionway to the transom, but there is a drop-down bathing platform that reveals a garage that can accommodate a 4.2 metre tender.

The 95 is billed as a semi-custom yacht, and it’s possible for the owner and their agents to get as involved in the specification as they wish. However, in reality, most of the choices are made in the usual areas of interior finish and configuration. All the same, this owner’s cruising brief has extended into some uncharted territory for Swan. His chief requirement was for separate external access from the master suite aft. “It posed a challenge for our designers,” admits Virginia De Carlo from Swan’s marketing team, “but the owner really values privacy.”

Lighting is the other area where the owner’s vision is most evident. “The client wanted to have simpler to understand switches — easy on and off. But he also wanted a lot of lights — indirect, spots, under the bed and so on — all with different scenarios for each area: say, watching television mode or evening dining,” says Kjellman.

This element emerged later in the design process, forcing the Swan team to redesign some of the electrical systems, using a large-buttoned, four-mood system from Lighting Design International. The digital switching technology behind the lighting is also used throughout the boat to turn other systems on and off.

If the technology is impressive, so is Lot 99 ’s social heart — the saloon, with its raised coachroof and wraparound windows. This space could really have suffered from the addition of a large box housing the hydraulics and the keel in its raised position, but the design team came up with a stylish solution. The box is elegantly curved at the edges, and clad in water buffalo leather, giving it an architectural quality as its acts to separate the dining area to port and the sofa space to starboard.

There’s a natural, understated Italian feel to the interior design . “The brief was to create a yacht interior with the comfort of a home, yet seaworthy,” De Carlo says. Upholstery in light herringbone fabric from Loro Piana, with joinery in European oak lightly stained with a colour called tundra titanium, was chosen to complement the leather.

The colour scheme runs throughout the boat, from the full-width owner’s suite aft, through the three guest cabins (two twins and bunks for the children) to the galley and crew quarters forward.

Back in Monaco, Captain Giacomuzzi skilfully backs the boat into a berth that barely offers enough beam for a fender. Lot 99 is soon made fast, but it feels like this all-purpose yacht is yearning to get away. She has the classic Swan lines that promise speed and faithful handling, but this conceals a slightly beamier, more comfortable interior for cruising. Go-anywhere sailing boats have never looked as good.

S&S Swan (download pdf) When should it be considered original

Olin stephens talks about us.

I have been thankful during recent years to have been able to see the growing interest in many older boats including some of S&S design , as I knew it in the years from 1928 until I retired gradually between 1978 and 1980. The earliest of all seem close to my heart because they were so much the product of personal feeling and intuition.

As time passed I learned more and the office grew and the design approach was more rationalized and, I hope, in some ways better but, perhaps, a little less individual. I am especially grateful for the activity of the Association in the way it has allowed me to see again many of these boats and enjoy the aquaintance many of the owners as protectors of my widespread family.

Nowhere has the warmth of feeling been deeper than in Italy. I think of myself as fortunate in many, many ways. One of my happiest of associations has been to frequently visit with new and old friends in the old world, and to realize the activity and kindness in the Italian branch of the S&S Association . May I offer salutations and many thanks? O.J.S. II

... I am really impressed at the site and at the work you are doing. The information I found (on the website) was really quite important in my desision to buy this boat.

I do most of my sailing single handed, and have had a Contessa 32 for the last twenty-odd years. Have always admired the 38, and when one came up for sale last fall I checked the web and found the S&S Swan Association .  I think it was the enthusiasm for the boats that comes across so clearly that made me decide to ask for a test-sail, and that was it! Fair winds!
