Wooden Ships Comments on this Teal One Design Keel Boat

Teal Class One Design built by E. Williams of Cowes in 1936 to a design by A.R. Luke.

9 yachts to the Teal Class design are known to have been built with possibly only 5 yachts remaining.  This example is certainly the best example around and is very original in many ways.  This one design racing boat has the most exquisite lines with one yacht winning the Round the Island Race in 1935 and this very boat, then named Britt, winning in 1936.

Over the last 12 years the boat has undergone a steady but detailed rebuild by the present owner, starting with the fundamental structure and working through the hull bit by bit.  The rebuild is now nearly complete with minor jobs and cosmetic work left to complete.  She is now at a stage where a new owner could customise the yacht to suit their particular needs, be that racing or cruising.

One of the most elegant designs of keel boat to be found afloat, currently very near the end of a detailed refit and ready for a new owner to finish off and enjoy.

Advertised at this very low price at the request of the owner who has thoroughly enjoyed the refit process and simply wants her to go to a new home where she can be finished and enjoyed.  All funds received from the sale will be donated to the Tectona Trust sailing charity.

Recent Refit Work

  • New bronze keel bolts and the ballast keel rebedded
  • Plank hood ends and garboards re-fastened with bronze screws

  • New upgraded mast step to a design by Ed Burnett with all new grown oak floors in way of the mast step
  • All floors replaced with Oak with the exception of two (the after most and forward most) all fastened with Bronze bolts/screws
  • New chain plates fabricated as the originals with chamfered edges and tapered through their length
  • Stem repaired by way of forestay fitting bolts. All refastened in new bronze
  • All sawn frame futtock bolts have been replaced with bronze
  • Cockpit sole framing replaced and fixed with bronze

Construction

Planked in full length pitch pine fastened with bronze screws to sawn oak frames.  6 new frames in way of the rigging, 4 in laminated oak and 2 in sawn oak.

Intermediate steamed timbers fastened with copper rivets.

Some of the splines in the topsides need replacing but other than that the hull seems sound and fair.

Grown oak floors across the centreline with all new floors in way of the mast step.  Bilges painted in gloss white.

External lead ballast keel recently removed and re-bedded.  Fastened with bronze keel bolts, all replaced new in the recent refit.

Complete new deck laid in 2 layers of marine plywood, one 9mm and one 6mm.  Sheathed externally with epoxy glass cloth.  Varnished teak covering boards with a varnished teak toe rail set slightly inboard covering the join between deck and covering board.

The glass cloth runs out under the teak covering board and the edge is covered by the teak rubbing strake to ensure no water ingress into the deck structure.

Bronze deck fittings including mushroom vents,  fairleads, cleats and forestay fitting.

Small elegant coachroof believed to be largely original with varnished teak coamings and bronze port lights.

Coachroof deck of laid T&G on oak deck beams, sheathed externally with epoxy glass cloth.  Varnished teak sliding companionway hatch that has been recently rebuilt.

Newly built varnished mahogany forehatch.

Elegant cockpit with varnished teak coamings and varnished mahogany slatted thwarts.  Scrubbed teak cockpit sole grating.

Tiller steering with a rudder hung on the stern post.

Fractional Bermudan sloop rig on a keel stepped varnished wooden mast.

A new mast step has been built to a design by Ed Burnett, designed for another Teal Class to improve the distribution of loads down through the mast.  The mast has been shortened slightly to accommodate the new mast step design.

Varnished roller reefing boom.  Varnished spinnaker pole and alloy jockey pole.

Twin spreader mast with jumper struts to support the mast head.

Stainless steel standing rigging to new internal galvanised chain plates.  The new chain plates have not yet been fastened through the new oak frames.

Running backstays on tackles.

Non self tailing bronze sheet winches from Pascal Atkey of Cowes, likely to be original.

Mainsail, jib and spinnaker made by Ratsey using their original Teal sail plan, setting 400sqft of sail.  Age of sails unknown but in good serviceable condition.

No engine or systems in the boat at present.

She could utilise an outboard engine or perhaps a more modern pod type leg drive driven by an electric motor.  This is to be decided by the new owner.

Accommodation

Simple but beautiful interior, all newly varnished, with sitting headroom and a settee berth either side complete with new  mattresses and upholstery.

Either side at the aft end of the cabin is a nice mahogany locker.

Mainsail, jib, spinnaker, all by Ratsey

Hudson Valley One

All aboard the motor yacht Teal

teal class yacht

The Teal is co-owned by Joe Thomas and John DeForest, business partners who bought the craft in 2006 and have been operating in Kingston as North River Charters since. The yacht was built in 1961 on Harker’s Island, North Carolina by James Gilliken, but has been completely renovated and extensively upgraded since then, with a new mahogany interior with four-sided bar, new staircases and a fully renovated pilothouse.

“It’s always been a charter boat,” says Thomas, “but it actually started out as a fishing vessel. The deck behind the pilothouse used to be very narrow, with space left all the way around for fishing, but it was converted sometime in the ‘80s. The previous owner brought it here in ‘93 and did some more refits at that time, making it more or less what it is today.”

Thomas had worked on the Teal for a number of years as a first mate, but working for himself was always something that he had wanted to do. So when the opportunity came up to buy the yacht, he and DeForest did just that. “John’s the business guy and I’m the boat guy,” says Thomas.

Ninety percent of its business is private charters, he says, and every trip is different. “As long as what the customer wants is safe and I’m comfortable with the operation of the boat, and it’s not going to put me into any situations that the Coast Guard wouldn’t like, we can find a way to make it work.”

Charters have been booked on the Teal for just about any special occasion that you can think of (even memorial services), and they do about five or six weddings every summer, as well as numerous rehearsal parties. Even Sweet 16 parties have been big lately, says Thomas. The private charters are customized, varying with the type of food, music or other amenities that the customer wants, so the prices really have to be discussed on an individual basis, says Thomas.

The Teal has a full bar, and food is outsourced from a restaurant or caterer. Arrangements can be made with local restaurants on the waterfront, and musicians or deejays who have gone over well in the past at other events can be recommended by the crew.

The Teal does hour-and-a-half sightseeing cruises, too – usually on Saturdays at 2 p.m., according to Thomas. Traveling at a leisurely pace, the yacht cruises past the sights, which include verdant landscape in spring and summer and fall foliage in autumn, and glimpses of old Hudson Valley estates. The yacht passes by the Rondout Lighthouse, and most of the time, depending on river traffic and variables like the tide, the farther-away Esopus Meadows Lighthouse as well.

Tickets for sightseeing excursions cost $15 for adults, $10 for children. Reservations with a credit card are taken over the phone, or a cash purchase can be made at the dock.

Thomas says that he’s often down on the boat working off-hours when the yacht isn’t booked, and people can stop by and talk to him about a charter in person, if they like. That personal touch is part of what makes the Teal special, he says, adding that both partners are on most trips, with at least one of them on every charter. “A lot of times on the bigger ships, you never even see the captain; but on ours, the pilothouse is right in the center, in the flow of everything, and people can come in and ask me questions directly.”

The Teal hosts Sip ‘n’ Sail cruises with a deejay on some weekends, which are not so much about sightseeing as they are about a party atmosphere. The normal Sip ‘n’ Sail cruise cost is $10 per person, but on Saturday, September 15, there’ll be a cruise from 8 to 10:30 p.m. with live blues music by Murali Coryell. The cost for that cruise is $25 per person; reservations are required.

Excursions for special days like Mothers’ Day and the Fourth of July are scheduled every year, and sell out weeks in advance. The Fourth of July trip is probably their most popular, says Thomas, and he says that, despite having done it for years now, it’s one of his favorite trips of the year as well.

The Teal departs from the Kingston waterfront at 1 Broadway from May 1 to October 31. Reservations with credit card are taken at (845) 750-6025. Sightseeing excursions generally depart on Saturdays at 2 p.m. The cost is $15 for adults, $10 for children. Sip ‘n’ Sail cruises cost $10. A cruise with live blues music by Murali Coryell on Saturday, September 15 from 8 to 10:30 p.m. costs $25; reservations are required. Private charters are customized and prices vary with arrangements for catered food and live or deejay music and amenities. The Teal has a full bar. Last of the Great Flying Boats: The Short Solent

Background image

This blog was written by Paul Tibbutt, Walsh Memorial Library volunteer The Short S.45 Solent was the culmination of many successful flying boats designed by  Short Brothers and Harland  who were based in Rochester, England and later Belfast, Northern Ireland. Earlier designs that also had an influence on New Zealand’s aviation scene included the S.30 ‘Empire Class’, S.25 ‘Tasman Class’ Sandringham and S25 Sunderland (a converted Sandringham).

The S.30 and the Sandringham preceded the Solent in the TEAL fleet, and the Sunderland became a faithful and long-serving part of the Royal New Zealand Air Force.  A fine example of a Sunderland  forms a unique flying boat double in MOTAT’s aviation collection. Both can be seen at the Aviation Display Hall at MOTAT 2.

The 1930s and ’40s were truly the age of flying boats which were considered to be the way of the future for international air travel. They could land on water in otherwise inaccessible places, fuel could be provided more easily and less expensively on the coast than inland, and maintenance requirements were simplified by the availability of established dockyards.

In today’s sophisticated aviation environment with multiple airlines, worldwide air routes and modern airliners carrying passenger numbers unimagined in the 1930s, it is hard to envisage the excitement created by aviation at the time. Hundreds of thousands of sightseers lined Auckland’s harbour, and the water was crowded with small boats to witness the arrival of Pan American Airways, Sikorski S.42B flying boat ‘Samoan Clipper’ on  a survey flight  from San Francisco on 30 March 1937. Imperial Airways S.23 Empire Class flying boat,  ‘Centaurus’ , also a survey flight, arrived from London on 26 December 1937 — the globe had been spanned and it seemed that Auckland was, at last, an integral part of the modern world. The following day’s edition of the  Auckland Star  proudly announced, ‘Auckland Becomes World Air Terminus’.

TEAL took delivery of its first flying boat, an S.30 ‘Empire Class’, on 29 August 1939. The first service left for Sydney on 1 April 1940 which, for the first time, enabled a direct air connection with the outside world for passengers and mail services from New Zealand. The 160mph cruising speed at an altitude of 5000–8000 feet in an unpressurised cabin, however, meant the 19 passengers and six crew had to endure a flight time of around nine hours!

Despite that, it was popular with travelers, and, by 1946, the initial weekly trans-Tasman service from Auckland in 1940 was increased to a daily one, and a service from Wellington was introduced in 1950.

When the Solent was produced in 1946, only four Mark IV versions were built, all of which saw service with TEAL. The requirement for higher-powered engines, higher speed and greater passenger capacity needed for Pacific stage lengths was influenced by TEAL’s Chief Engineer,  George Bolt . Other refinements included Smiths Instrument’s new automatic pilot which, together with the higher-powered engines, made this flying boat unique in the world at the time.

TEAL’s first Solent arrived on 29 September 1949, and ZK-AMM ‘Ararangi’ was closely followed by ZK-AMN, ‘Awatere‘, ZK-AMO ‘Aranui’ (MOTAT’s Solent) and ZK-AML, ‘Aotearoa II’. A single Mark III, ZK-AMQ ‘Aparima’ was acquired in 1951.

Solents cruised at 200mph on the power of their four 2040hp sleeve valve, Bristol Hercules engines, cutting the average trans-Tasman flight time to 6 ½ hours. They had a still air range of 3000 miles and could carry 45 passengers in considerable luxury, a significant advance on the 19 carried by TEAL’s earlier S.30 flying boats.

Pacific destinations were an obvious extension to TEAL’s route network and what was to become the world-renowned  Coral Route  was inaugurated in November 1951. Encompassing Fiji, Samoa, the Cook Islands and Tahiti, the route promoted the South Pacific as a rival to the Caribbean for exclusive island holidays. The aircraft carried a flight crew of eight — Captain, First Officer, Flight Engineer, Navigator and Radio Operator. A Steward and two Flight Stewardesses attended to the increased passenger load, who were accommodated on upper and lower decks. (All First Class!)

Because of the remoteness of the waypoints and the lack of ground support there, each flight also carried a ground engineer for line maintenance and a flight clerk to look after the paperwork.

Facilities and operations on the Coral Route could at times be unsophisticated, yet passengers reveled in the remoteness and charm of the islands. At times there was an enforced wait on remote beaches for the Solent to be re-fueled by hand from drums of petrol rowed out to the aircraft, or for an unscheduled and time consuming (as in days!) engine change.

On one occasion during a stopover on the island of Akaiami, an unserviceable engine had to be changed, necessitating the Solent being ferried to Tahiti on three engines where appropriate facilities existed to achieve this. The passengers stayed on Akaiami, and food and blankets from the flying boat were taken ashore for the enforced holiday, while the locals supplied supplementary food and entertainment.

Whilst the reputation of the service was heady and romantic, the days of the flying boat had already been surpassed by the time TEAL introduced the Solent. With most of the world’s airlines operating land planes, carrying double the number of passengers in air-conditioned comfort and above the weather at 20,000 feet or more, the flying boat became uneconomic to operate.

The last TEAL Solent flying boat service was undertaken on the Coral Route on 14 September 1960 by MOTAT’s Solent, ZK-AMO ‘Aranui’. The aircraft had an unblemished safety record and provided a unique service over the 11 years of its operation with TEAL. With this flight, TEAL had operated the last scheduled International flying boat service in the world.

Although a unique era in South Pacific aviation had ended, happily it was not the end for the last of the world’s Solents.

The fact that MOTAT’s Solent survived at all was due in no small part to the determination of the then General Manager of TEAL,  Sir Geoffrey Roberts . He, and other like-minded individuals and organisations, lobbied hard to form a transport and aeronautical museum in Auckland, a dream that was realised in 1964 when MOTAT opened. Potentially ZK-AMO had a new home.

After being donated to MOTAT by TEAL in 1961, ZK-AMO, ‘Aranui’ had taxied up the Waitematā Harbour from TEAL’s Mechanics Bay headquarters to Hobsonville Air Base and was hauled out onto a grass hard stand. There it sat in company with four ex-RNZAF Sunderlands for the next 5 ½ years. Finally, over the weekend of 7–8 May 1966, the aircraft was transported up the harbour and across Meola Road to an outdoor site at the Keith Park Memorial Airfield for public display and restoration.

Unfortunately, the lack of suitable storage under cover meant that, again, it sat in the open and, despite valiant efforts by MOTAT staff and volunteers, was subject to further deterioration. It was not until 1982 that a dedicated group of ex TEAL and Air New Zealand staff formed the Solent Preservation Society and volunteered to undertake the massive task of restoration.

Although the group included experienced engineers and crew members, they also enlisted appropriate outside professional help and had surveys conducted as to the state and correction of exterior corrosion when required. The group refurbished the interior, replaced missing components and the windows, had the seating re-upholstered, and installed new carpet and curtains .

After the work was completed, Solent Preservation Society members gave regular guided tours of the cabins and flight deck, proudly showing the results of the massive effort which had gone into presenting ‘Aranui’ to an admiring public again. The Society wound up in 2005.

In 2009, ‘Aranui’ had to be moved outside once more while the Aviation Display Hall was extended. The elements again took their toll. Deterioration of the airframe and internal fittings was inevitable and further refurbishment became necessary.

The Hull Structure of the Solent Mk IV from ‘Flying Boat Memories’, G.L. Gore, Ref. 02–154, 1991, Wakefield Press. Walsh Memorial Library, The Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT).

Steve Subritzky and his team at MOTAT 2 commenced the task in 2012. The effects of water leaks, exposure to salt air, the intrusion of feral cats and their waste and, in particular, leaking of the toilets all had to be remedied.

The aircraft was moved back inside to enable work on the airframe to begin. Some of the internal structure and various panels at the base of the keel had to be replaced. Difficult internal access to this area made the task particularly onerous. Riveting replacement panels involved many hours of cramped and frustrating work, one team member lying prone within the fuselage providing a base, while the other worked their way along the exterior of the keel applying the rivets.

Once the airframe was completed, work commenced on the internal cabins. With the 75th anniversary of its formation approaching, Air New Zealand made a generous cash donation which did much to advance the work. The floor and wall coverings were replaced, along with some internal structure including the exacting task of matching original materials and colourings.

Once externally secure, ‘Aranui’ was once again moved outside in 2017 to be water blasted preparatory to final completion of the keel and external painting. It was outside for 18 months, but there was only a brief period when it was without protection from the elements as scaffolding was erected and the entire airframe enclosed within a plastic covering. The first task was to water blast the entire surface — which resulted in some good and bad news for the restorers. The airframe was found to be in generally good condition, but a number of corroded panels had to be replaced. Each panel had to be drilled out, a supporting frame inserted internally and a new panel rivetted to the frame.

Short Solent ZK-AMO during restoration at MOTAT 2018. All rights reserved, MOTAT.

A particularly big job involved removing a large area of previously applied filler in the forward fuselage area and repairing the hatch through which the crew would secure the aircraft on arrival at their destination, as seen above in the photo of ZK-AMM berthing at Evans Bay, Wellington.

With the panel work completed, the airframe had a total of three coats of acid etch and primer applied, followed by four top coats of the correct shades of grey and white. This was followed by hand painting the appropriate TEAL logos and markings, with a few of the smaller details applied as decals.

External fittings, radio aerials and navigation aids were applied and on 15 March 2019, ‘Aranui’ was moved back inside the Aviation Display Hall again.

There is still much to be done internally, but the world’s only Mk IV Solent is now externally complete, under secure cover, and resplendent in the colour scheme carried in the last period of its operation from 1954–60.

Sir Geoffrey Roberts’s original vision to have the last TEAL flying boat restored and displayed in company with other historic aircraft in MOTAT’s collection has been achieved.

Outrigger Junior

FOR SALE - Denman Marine Built Sassafras 16, $200 OFF Annapolis Wherry kits, see our latest newsletter for details

Teal, a 1940's 23' Keel Boat, arrives in the workshop on the start of her new journey

Restoration work continues on "Teal", a lovely king billy carvel yacht for a local client.  She was built in Burnie back in the 1940's.  We believe she was the  " Cappy" design  by J. Julius Fanta.  She has a beautiful hull shape and apparently was a real performer.  In a lovely turn of events we have had the son of one of the original owners come forward to help complete the history on the boat. So far work has entailed;  - getting the shape back into the hull    - new celery top pine stem, keelson and keel and huon pine transom  -  the hull has also been extended  by 2' aft  - fairing the hull and preparing her for the cold molded overlay  - cutting veneers for the cold molding  - applying two diagonal layers and one fore and aft layer of cold molded veneers  - applying double bias fibreglass cloth sheathing to the completed planking  - fitting laminated frames and floors to the hull    - completing the deck framing  - laid teak decks over marine ply substrate The current owner is going to sail her extensively when she is finished including some coastal racing so we have decided to go with a king billy cold molded overlay over the old carvel planking which will make her immensely strong and able to handle the stresses that will be imposed upon her. We'll try to keep the photos updated regularly on her journey back to the water - enjoy.

DESCRIPTION

Wooden Ships Comments on this Teal One Design Keel Boat

Teal Class One Design built by E. Williams of Cowes in 1936 to a design by A.R. Luke.

9 yachts to the Teal Class design are known to have been built with possibly only 5 yachts remaining. This example is certainly the best example around and is very original in many ways.

  • Various new frames replaced with either sawn oak or laminated oak
  • New galvanised chain plates
  • New main sailing deck beam
  • Complete new deck using 2 layers of marine plywood sheathed in epoxy glass cloth
  • New teak covering boards and toe rail
  • Old engine removed completely and the hull made good
  • Strip and re-varnish of the coachroof, cockpit, interior and spars
  • New upgraded mast step to a design by Ed Burnett with all new grown oak floors in way of the mast step
  • All floors replaced with Oak with the exception of two (the after most and forward most) all fastened with Bronze bolts/screws
  • New chain plates fabricated as the originals with chamfered edges and tapered through their length
  • Stem repaired by way of forestay fitting bolts. All refastened in new bronze
  • All sawn frame futtock bolts have been replaced with bronze
  • Cockpit sole framing replaced and fixed with bronze
  • All new timber repairs have been replaced with the original species and to original dimensions/sections where practicable. Any visible plywood (with the exception of the deck) has been replaced with solid timber eg cabin sole boards, in an attempt to put her back to her original form.

Length on Deck 30’6”

Length Waterline 20’

Sail Area 400sqft

Displacement 2.6 tons

$600,000 awarded to help turn Randall Preserve into ‘world-class nature park’

Additional funding has been awarded for the future of the Randall Preserve, on land formerly known as Banning Ranch.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

State officials awarded a $600,000 grant on Thursday to develop plans for the future preservation of Frank and Joan Randall Preserve.

The 387-acre space just east of the Santa Ana River and north of Pacific Coast Highway is near the borders of Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. The former oil-field is considered one of the last undeveloped plots of coastal real estate in Orange County, and is a habitat for burrowing owls, fairy shrimp, peregrine falcons and other wildlife.

“The Preserve is home to more than 18 sensitive, threatened or endangered species, has the significant potential to serve as a buffer for coastal climate-related impacts, and is adjacent to nearby disadvantaged communities ready for passive recreational use on this land,” Melanie Schlotterbeck of the nonprofit Power In Nature’s Southland Regional stated in a news release announcing the award. “This planning grant is a huge win!”

The Banning Ranch property was acquired and set aside for preservation by two nonprofits, the Trust for Public Land and the organization currently known as the Coastal Corridor Alliance, in 2022. The funding awarded by the state’s Wildlife Conservation Board on Thursday will help the Alliance and the preserve’s current title-holder, the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, plan for the future of the open space.

“It also provides the non-federal match required by the $1 million previously award to the Alliance by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation with support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,” according to Schlotterbeck.

The grant contributes to a total of $1.785 million the nonprofits have secured to develop strategies to manage resources, protect beachfront portions of the preserve from erosion and maintain sustainable access to the public.

“Creating a nature preserve in an area with so many rare species requires the best possible plan,” stated Terry Welsh, president of Coastal Corridor Alliance’s board. “The Wildlife Conservation Board grant will help fund the necessary work to design a world-class nature park at Randall Preserve/Genga that allows human access, traditional Tribal practices, and rare and sensitive species to thrive.”
