Extensively restored, the 1939 Mathis-Trumpy Innisfail is priced at $2.95 million

Launched as a private yacht at the end of the Great Depression, Innisfail, above and below, was shortly thereafter conscripted by the U.S. Navy for shore patrol.

A slice of U.S. naval and presidential history will be on view among the yachts at the Palm Beach International Boat Show, priced by Bartram and Brakenhoff at $2.95 million.

Innisfail, a restored 1939 Mathis-Trumpy motor yacht, was designed by John Trumpy and handcrafted by the Mathis Yacht Building Co., a favored manufacturer of yachts for society’s elite, including the Dodges, DuPonts and Guggenheims.

Shortly after her launch, she and other luxury yachts were commandeered for World War II shore-patrol duty by the U.S. Navy, which refitted her deck with cannons and her stern with a depth-charge rack, according to a website devoted to the vessel, YachtInnisfail.com, which details much of the history in this story.

After patrolling the East Cost, the yacht was decommissioned in 1947. She was restored and remained in government service as a presidential yacht used by presidents Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy before being sold to a private owner in 1965. In later years, however, the yacht — which can accommodate up to 60 guests — hosted presidents Nixon, Ford and Clinton.

Over the years, the yacht served as a charter vessel in Chicago and in Fort Lauderdale, where she was known as El Presidente, said Joe Bartram, who became a broker at Bartram and Brekenhoff after selling the company he founded.

The yacht today belongs to a Charleston, S.C., owner who bought her five years ago, undertook her restoration and recently decided to sell her, Bartram said. Over the past several months, the yacht has been spiffed up for her appearance in West Palm Beach, Bartram said.

“The owner really wanted to get her in shape for the show,” he said. “She’s been primped.”

Innisfail will be docked at Bartram and Brekenhoff’s display on Ramp D in slips D101-D104 and D104A.

Classic motor yacht Innisfail now for sale with Bradford Marine

A call to Tucker Fallon at Bradford Marine Yacht Sales confirms that he's taken over the central listing for the venerable 28m motor yacht Innisfail .

Built by Trumpy in 1939, she has three double staterooms and has played host to numerous US presidents and foreign dignitaries. Her owner has spared no expense in bringing her back to her original origins. The modern stack was replaced with a stack similar to the original. The false ‘modern’ flybridge was removed and traditional cap railing was installed.

The entire old fibreglass covering of the boat deck was removed, all damaged wood and deck beams replaced and a new fibreglass top laid down. The pilothouse has been rebuilt to represent a very near appearance of the original. An extended foredeck shade and a new signal mast complete a stunning new look. Additional restoration work has been completed on the side and aft decks. Extensive refinishing of the saloon includes new overhead deck beams with varnished lathes. Finally, in 2011 a new stem and bow was configured to return Innisfail to her original design and profile.

Located in Florida, Innisfail is asking $1,995,000.

Hitler’s yacht lies abandoned off the coast of this Florida city. Here's where to find it

The ostwind is one of many strange objects found in florida’s waters.

Anthony Talcott , Digital Journalist

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Nearly 5 miles off the coast of Miami Beach, a yacht sits at the bottom of the ocean.

This vessel — dubbed the Ostwind — has a strange history. It was once owned by Adolf Hitler.

Recommended Videos

The 80-foot-long yacht was commissioned by the infamous dictator in 1938 as an Olympic racing yacht, though it never actually competed.

According to historian Mike Miller , Hitler’s plan was to ride the yacht into England after Germany’s victory, where he would accept Winston Churchill’s surrender aboard the boat.

However, history had different plans.

After Germany’s defeat, the U.S. reportedly took control of the Ostwind, which was used as a training craft at the U.S. Naval Academy before being sold to a Nazi memorabilia collector in the 1970s, the Ocala Star-Banner reports.

The collector took the yacht to Jacksonville for repairs, but it was ultimately abandoned, and a marina owner then took possession.

Despite offers from a Nazi group to buy the yacht and turn it into a shrine, the marina owner ultimately reached out to Miami Beach officials about using the Ostwind as an artificial reef.

Eventually, the boat was taken from Jacksonville down to Miami Beach in 1989, and it was sunk off the coast to around 275 feet deep, state records indicate .

Nowadays, the only way to view the WWII-era relic is to throw on some scuba gear and take a dive.

Of course, the Ostwind isn’t the only strange object to be sunken off of Miami’s coast.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the following items have also been sunk near Miami Beach to create artificial reefs:

  • Smoke stacks
  • Radio towers
  • A water tower
  • Oil rig structures
  • A railroad barge
  • A minesweeper warship

He was overly fond of that mutt. This was 1910. So let me get this straight, his first boat, Eph was 40 and 45 feet long, built around 1910 (Nov, 1909) By Consolidated Shipbuilding, and by 1910 he was up to Eph IX. It was stranded in Navy Cove near Mobile and in Jacksonville in the same storm. (the Jacksonville link was worthless, so I left it out)
