Fethiye

Gulet Charter Fethiye

Fethiye gulet charter guide.

Fethiye is a city that has established a throne in the hearts with its turquoise waters and lush nature. The region, where the Mediterranean climate prevails, manages to attract the attention of many local and foreign holiday lovers during the summer months. Another place that comes to mind first when Fethiye is mentioned is Ölüdeniz. Oludeniz has a position and feature that can be pointed with finger among the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Fethiye has been an important settlement center since ancient times. The Lycians, which meant “people of the Land of Light ” in ancient times, owned this city and was called Telmessos.

Fethiye is not only a preferred place for the blue cruise . The historical texture and paragliding made from Babadağ make the region a separate center of attraction. You can take to the air from the summit of Babadağ on a flight over Oludenız and its beach and lagoon. Thousands of people who want to have a bird’s eye view of Fethiye float down from 1975 meters as part of the International Air Games Festival held every year.

Best Hidden Bays Of Fethiye

Many bays and islands in the region make it a frequent destination for sea lovers who want to rent a yacht. It is possible to discover both peace and nature in beautiful bays. The most famous of these is undoubtedly Butterfly Valley . Since Butterfly Valley is a difficult place to reach by road, it is a beauty that many people visit by private yacht rental. But for travellers and those who want to camp, the road is better for transportation. After the Butterfly Valley, there is Kabak Bay, which is right next to it and preserves its naturalness. Place totaly offers peace with its clear sea and virgin nature. This is the perfect place for rest and refresh your soul.

Gemiler Bay

It is located right across Gemiler Island and, like many other bays, it offers you a great natural beauty and peace. Gemiler Island is a very special island with many churches from Byzantine. Today, these churches and monasteries are gathered in an open-air museum and it is possible to enter the museum with a card.

Katranci Bay

It is a must-have bay on your route. The fact that there are no hotels or businesses around allows it to preserve its beauty, but it is one of the most ideal bays for camping. The fact that Katranci Bay is 15 km away from Fethiye also facilitates the passage of visitors to the city center from here with gulet yachts.

Yedi Burun Bays

It is one of the most special places in the region and consists of seven bays. It is another magnificent place consisting of completely preserved bays that you can reach by boat tours since it is impossible to reach by road. With an extraordinary view from a hill right next to Yedi Nose, you can see Seven Noses in everything.

Cleopatra Bath

It is a bay that those who rent a blue voyage and private yacht do not visit. It is impossible to reach the bay by land. It takes its name from the bathhouse, which is thought to have been built by Cleopatra during her visit to Rome, and whose ruins continue to exist today. When you dive into the baths of Cleopatra , you can see many different colors and types of crabs and fish. The cove is a very special place, closed to winds from almost all directions, completely covered with trees, clear sea and small and large islands.

Calis Beach

Calis, also known as “ Calis Beach ” is situated at the west entrance of Fethiye. 45 km away from Dalaman airport, 7 km from Fethiye center. Calis is one of the most popular tourist area of Fethiye. With its 4 km long sandy beach, Calis gets more visitors each year.

Fethiye has been hosting many local and foreign tourists during the summer season for years. This generous city is offering the beauties of nature with all shades of blue and green. If you want a peaceful and quiet holiday, you can consider the best Fethiye yacht charter option this summer.

More About Fethiye Gulet - Turkey

Fethiye is a traditional market town set around a beautiful natural harbour. With private and public marinas, shipyards, and beautiful clear waters it is a natural centre for visitors to Turkey to enjoy the ‘blue cruise’ on the traditional gulet charter yachts. Gulets depart from here for yacht charters around the stunning coastline with the most popular gulet cruise being around the Gulf of Fethiye and into the Bay of Gocek with its famous twelve islands. A family gulet holiday in these bays makes for an extremely relaxing way to spend the week, touring the beautiful coves and islands swimming, sunbathing and exploring. The gulet holiday itinerary can be extended to around the rugged cape of Fethiye peninsula to the famous Gemiler or St. Nicholas Island, or walk up to the village of Kayakoy, or be run across to Ölüdeniz.  Literally translated as 'dead sea', the stunning Ölüdeniz lagoon is a protected area, ensuring that its natural beauty is preserved, and only non-motorised watersports are allowed.A longer popular gulet charter route takes guests along the coast further east past the magnificent long Patara beach to the charming mountainside harbour of Kalkan and spectactular coves sheltered by cliffs, as at Kaputaş beach, and to the laid back harbour town of Kaş. Alternatively, gulet charters can cruise westwards at a leisurely pace to Ekincik, where arrangements can be made for a riverboat to explore Dalyan river and mud baths, or sail further to Marmaris and return. Fethiye is at a reasonable distance for transfers from Dalaman airport which has both international and domestic terminals, and serves many airlines and charters for the summer season, and for the greater part of the year.

On board gulet at Fethiye Harbour

After breakfast we'll leave Fethiye harbour and start our Gulet cruise out of the Gulf of Fethiye and sail around the coast of Fethiye Peninsular to the famous beautiful coastal resort village of Oludeniz with its beautiful blue lagoon and wide white Belcekiz Beach. We'll also stop at the nearby nature reserve at Butterfly Valley for a walk and swim. We'll spend the night at St. Nicholas Island where you can explore the ruins of an old Byzantine settlement as the sun sets. Tea, dinner and fruit is served before you can sleep overnight either in your cabin or under the stars on the deck of the boat.

On board gulet at St. Nicholas Island

Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch

We start sailing early today and proceed along the coast towards Yesilkoy which has a quiet bay surrounded by Mediterranean shrubland (maquis) and olive groves. We'll have breakfast here and have time to swim in the bay. Then its off to the small harbour town of Kas which has a charming bohemian atmosphere, whitewashed houses and lots of colourful bougainvillea throughout the summer months. The modern town sits on the ancient site of Antiphellos and there are still some visible ruins including a theatre and the 4th century B.C. Lion Tomb. We'll spend the night moored up here.

On board gulet in Kas

Our first stop today is the tiny fishing village of Simena, which is also known as Kalekoy or Kale locally. The vilage has a beautiful setting with fishing boats, ancient and medieaval houses by the shore, with a steep cliff behind and Simena Castle perched above. You can walk up to the castle for great views of the village below, the island of Kekova and the surrounding fields of a Lycian necropolis. Out in the bay, a single Lycian sarcophagus sits on a pedestal in the water, overlooked by a theatre carved into the rock. After spending some time exploring here, we'll spend the night in a wide bay surrounded by green hills at nearby Ucagiz.

On board gulet at Ucagiz

A short cruise along the coast this morning brings us to the island of Kekova which is known both for its beautiful setting and turquoise sea, and also for the sunken city of of the s unken ruins of Dolchiste, an ancient Lycian settlement. The town was partially submerged by a powerful earthquake in the 2nd century, and you can look down from the Gulet and see many of the abandoned and damaged buildings. While you cannot swim here, we'll head next to Tersane Bay where this is definitely possible, and you can look at the ruins of an ancient Byzantine church and a Roman dockyard on the beach. Finally we'll sail on to Gokkaya, another beautiful bay with many tiny offshore islands.

On board gulet at Gokkaya

After breakfast, we take a short cruise to the sheltered bay at Bayindir Limani for a swim. The rest of the day is then spent in Kalkan, which is a picturesque harbour town set on a hillside with the Taurus Mountains as a backdrop and a sweeping bay in front. The harbour is busy with Turkish gulets and small fishing boats, and the historic old town then extends away from the sea with thriving restaurants, boutiques, roof terraces, cobbled streets and shops to explore. You could also take an optional trip to the nearby Patara Beach, which is a national park and one of the Mediterranean's few breeding grounds for turtles which visit between May and October. For history buffs, the ancient city and World Heritage Site of Xamthos, the ancient capital of the Lycians is also close at hand, and the ruins there and at Letoon are well worth a visit.

On board gulet at Kalkan

After an early start we sail to Camli Burun, a natural bay edged with pine-clad hills. We then continue sailing back towards Fethiye, and your last night on board is spent in Batikkaya Bay. Another day of relaxing, sunbathing, sightseeing and swimming has past.

On board gulet at Battikaya Bay

Our cruise ends today as we say goodbye to our boat crew and disembark the boat af Fethiye Harbour after breakfast this morning.

 Gulet Cruise

Spending a few days on a traditional Turkish gulet (a handmade, motorised wooden yacht) is one of the highlights of exploring Turkey. You can enjoy plenty of swimming and snorkelling and explore loads of natural and historical sites along the way. As you sail you can sunbathe on the deck, or read a book or play games on the cushioned seating in the shadow of the aft deck.

Most of the gullets we use feature an interior salon/bar area and a fully equipped galley. The most common gulets have 4 to 10 double cabins, which can accommodate 8 to 20 people. All cabins have ensuite toilet & shower facilities. Single supplement cabins are not generally available unless we have an odd number of people travelling. This being said, most people choose to sleep under the beautiful Mediterranean sky on mattresses on the deck, and only use their cabins as a wardrobe.

The gulets come with facilities for both outdoor and indoor dining. There are freezers to keep drinks cold, a CD/cassette player (so bring your music!), snorkels and masks, fishing lines and some board games.

A dinghy with outboard, a ship-to-shore radio, mobile telephone and life jackets are also provided. All the gulets are government approved with fully qualified captains.

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the destination you‘re visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, cruise upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Other options may either be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Many options are priced the same throughout the year, but some may incur single or high season supplements - full details are given on the tour reservation form or on request.

Single cabin supplement (TUSGFK)

From A$950*

Single cabin supplement (TUSGFK)

Min numbers: 1 *Based on 1 person/s

Due to the style and nature of this cruise and the bedding arrangements in the cabins, we do not arrange room shares between people not travelling together. This option therefore provides a single cabin on board the gulet for the duration of the cruise and should be added by all solo travellers.

Note:  Single supplement prices may vary seasonally.

Spending a few days on a traditional Turkish gulet (a handmade, motorised wooden yacht) is one of the highlights of exploring Turkey. The most common gulets have 4 to 10 double cabins, which can accommodate 8 to 20 people. All cabins have ensuite toilet & shower facilities. Single or twin bedded cabins are not generally available unless we have an odd number of people travelling so be prepared for a same-sex room share if you are travelling alone. This being said, most people choose to sleep under the beautiful Mediterranean sky on mattresses on the deck, and only use their cabins as a wardrobe.

The gulets we use are motorised pleasure craft with sails, and while they can manoevre under sail, the majority of the time the motor will be used. This is particularly the case during July and August when winds are very low. Strong winds also cause them to bank steeply and so time actually under sail is generaly very limited. These are not sailing vessels where you are expected to help with the rigging or take part in sailing as an activity.

You will need to bring your own beach towel, soap, shampoo and other personal items with you. Charging points are available for your electronic devices on deck and in some cabins (you will need to bring an adapter).

Health & Safety: A dinghy with outboard, a ship-to-shore radio, mobile telephone and life jackets are also provided. Lifejackets are stored under your bed inside the cabin. Please keep away from ropes and hawsers while sailing. Do not jump into the sea while the engine is running. In case of fire please check the position of your nearest life jacket and fire extinguisher - alert everybody on board and put on your life jacket immediately. All the gulets we use are government approved with fully qualified captains.

Accessibility: The boats we use are not suitable for passengers with special mobility needs. Embarkation gangways do not fit all types of wheelchairs and cabin bathrooms and staircases have restricted space and are generally unsuitable for people with limited mobility.  If you have other physical disabilities please contact us with any queries. It is expected that any passengers requiring special attention, assistance or treatment will be travelling with an escort.

We are committed to being a small group operator, as we feel this gives everyone in the group the best chance to get to know their fellow travellers and to make the most of their trip. So, we have selected Gulet boats which will allow us to have plenty of space but restrict the group size to a maximum of 16 people.

On Gulet cruises, you will be looked after by the boat captain and their crew. The captain and most crew will speak some English - enough to communicate effectively, if not fluent. We do not send an additional tour guide on our gulet cruises.

Our tours in Turkey use a range of hotels at the local 3, 4 and 5-star level with some boutique style properties also used on some tours. Please check the Accommodation section for more information on the normal hotels used on this tour. This list is given as a guide though and hotels may change from time to time to others of a similar standard. Accommodation levels and hotels are slightly different in Turkey to general Western standards. We regularly inspect all the hotels we use to ensure that the service you receive is as close as possible to your expectations. Please check your hotel room when you first arrive (hot water, cleanliness etc.), as our rep or your guide will be available to assist in case of any problems.

Please check the Single Room Supplement option for details on room sharing options and charges for solo travellers on this tour.

We will contact you with your arrival hotel details normally a couple of weeks before departure.

Check-in Times: Official hotel check- in times in Turkey are between 14.00 and 15.00. However, we do always try to ensure that if you arrive early, you can check into your room as soon as possible. We can nearly always get you into your hotel rooms well before midday, but please understand that it is out of our control if the hotel is full and it takes a little longer. You will have full use of the hotel facilities while you wait if there is a short delay.

Our trips feature a mix of different transport options. We want you to feel like you’re really experiencing the country you’re travelling through, but at the same time we want you to finish journeys refreshed enough to enjoy the next stage of the tour. The distances involved in Turkey mean that we use private vehicles and tourist coaches throughout this tour.

The majority of our Turkey tours include an airport meet and greet and transfer service on the first day of your tour (a limited number of our Turkey Tours do not include airport transfers - please be sure to check the individual tour page inclusions/exclusions). This is available from/to both of Istanbul's airports; Istanbul Ataturk (IST) and Sabiha Gokcen (SAW). Our representative will be holding an Encounters Travel signboard with your name displayed for easy identification. If you can't find our representative, our emergency contact numbers are given in your tour confirmation voucher.

No refund is available on missed transfers or portions of your trip owing to incorrect flight details being provided or delayed flight arrival. Any additional cost incurred in order to meet up with your group is at your own expense.

If your flights arrive/depart before/after the tour starts/ends then we will be very happy to arrange additional accommodation and airport transfers for you. We will aim to book these in the same hotel as the main tour, though this will be subject to availability (upgraded hotels are also available on request). If you do not book your additional accommodation through us, then our arrival/departure service is not included and you will need to make your own airport transfer arrangements.

Welcome meeting: Our group tours will commence with a welcome meeting at 7pm in the reception of your hotel, where you will have the chance to meet your guide and the rest of your tour group. For those arriving after 7pm, details regarding Day 2 activities will be left at reception.

We want to give you as much flexibility as possible when it comes to booking your holiday with us. So, to take account of people with varying travel plans, we don’t include your international flights in the main tour price. We are however very happy to suggest flights to go with the tour. Please contact us with your preferred dates and departure airport and we’ll give you a selection of airlines, times and fares to choose from.

Your airport arrival & departure transfers are included on the first and last days of the tour. Nearly all our Turkey tours start and finish in Istanbul and are served by Istanbul airport (IST). Transfers from other airports are also available on request but may incur an extra fee.

We do also sometimes advertise flight inclusive packages from selected airports. Where these are shown on our website, prices are correct at the time of quoting, but are subject to continued availability of the fare used. Prices will be reconfirmed at the time of booking, and we will also provide the flight times and airline details before tickets are issued.  Flight inclusive prices are based on the cheapest Economy ticket class available which is generally non-refundable and non-changeable unless the flight is cancelled for reasons such as Covid-19, in which case the airlines are more flexible. More flexible ticket options, as well as Premium Economy and Business Class tickets are available on request for an additional supplement. Any changes made to flight inclusive bookings will be subject to the airline rules on your ticket.

Flight CO2 Emissions:

Traveling by air is an amazing way to explore the world, but flights also contribute to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that impact the environment. By considering the airline's CO2 emissions when you choose your flight, you can help minimize your travel footprint.

When selecting your international flights and airline, we do therefore recommend that you try and also take into account the flight CO2 emissions. Some airlines and flight search websites (eg. Google Flights, Skyscanner) do publish this information, so you can compare between your flight options and make an informed decision. Thankfully, many airlines are working towards sustainability efforts, and choosing a greener option allows you to contribute to positive change while still enjoying your incredible adventure.

The tour price includes entrance fees to all the tourist sites mentioned in the itinerary . You will need to cover the cost of entrance to any other extra sites that you may wish to visit (this excludes tours which feature a gulet - on these tours entrance fees are not included and any required entrance fees should be paid locally).

Camera Fees: Photography is restricted in various ways at different sites. Often flash photography is often forbidden to protect the exhibits and ancient pigments, and sometimes cameras are not allowed in at all. Please respect these rules as they are there partly for your benefit. Tickets are not required for normal cameras, but if you have a video camera, if its use is permitted there will normally be a charge.

Tipping or Bahsis (bahk-sheesh) is common practice in Turkey, as a sign of appreciation for services provided for everything from table service in a restaurant to a massage in a Turkish bath. Wages for service staff in Turkey are very low and tips are a necessary supplement to meagre incomes.. Your tour price includes a contribution to various tips that your tour guide and driver will make along the way to ensure the smooth running of your tour.

This tipping kitty does not cover your tour guide or driver though. You may therefore wish to tip them at the end of the time they spend with you.  You should not feel obliged to tip any particular amount, and should consider your personal budget and your satisfaction with the service provided. We are often asked to provide a guide however:

Restaurants and taxis: Local markets and basic restaurants - leave the loose change. For more up-market restaurants we suggest 5% to 10% of your bill.

Local guides: Throughout your trip you may at times have a local guide in addition to your tour guide or tour leader. We suggest around GBP 1.50 / EUR 2.0 / USD 2 per person per day for local guides.

Drivers: You may have a range of private drivers on your trip. Some may be with you for a short journey while others may be with you for several days. We would suggest a higher tip for those more involved with the group however GBP 1.50 / EUR 2 / USD 2 per person per day is generally appropriate.

Gulet Boat Trips: If you are travelling through Southern Turkey on a Gulet boat trip we suggest GBP 1.50 / EUR 2 / USD 2 per person per day for the boat staff.

Tour guide: As a guideline we suggest around GBP 20-35 / USD 35-50 / EUR 25-45 per person for the whole tour, but this is ultimately up to you.

The official language of Turkey is Turkish. In addition, between 10 per cent and 15 per cent of the population speaks a different mother tongue, usually Kurdish or Arabic. Turkish words are spelled with an adapted Roman alphabet. The language is phonetic; each letter has only one sound that is always pronounced distinctly.

You'll find you won't have much of a problem with the language barrier. English is well communicated by many Turks. Below you will find some important phrases that will have you sounding like a Turk in no time!

Yes = Evet (eh-vet)                                                No = Hayir (hah-yuhr) Maybe = Belki (behl-key)                                         Please = Lutfen (loot-fen) Thank you = Tesekkur (tesh-eccur)                          Pardon me = Pardon (phar-don) Who = Kim (kim)                                                    When = Ne zaman (neh zah-mahn) Today = Bugun (boo-ghoon)                                   Yesterday = Dun (dhuen) Tomorrow = Yarin (yar-in)                                        I'm sorry = Ozur dilerim (oz-oor del-eh-rim) Help = Imdat (eem-daht)                                         Police = Polis (po-lis) Hello = Merhaba (mehrhaba)                                    Goodbye = Hoscakal (hosh-cha-khal) Good night = Iyi geceler (ee-yee geh-jeh-lehr)           How are you ? = Nasilsin ? You should ensure you are fully insured for medical emergencies including emergency evacuation and repatriation .

Recommended vaccinations and other health protection measures vary according to the country you are visiting and where you are travelling from. We recommend you contact your GP/medical practitioner or a travel clinic for current information on vaccinations needed for your destination. You should ensure that you are up to date with vaccines and boosters recommended for your normal life at home, including for example, vaccines required for occupational risk of exposure, lifestyle risks and underlying medical conditions. In addition, additional courses or boosters normally recommended for Turkey are Hepatitis A and Tetanus.

More information is available here: Turkey Malaria map - there is low risk malaria in some south eastern regions, not visited on our tours. Yellow fever certificates are not required.

Passports should be valid for at least six months after your departure from the country. Please do not bring an almost full or almost expired passport. Visa arrangements are the responsibility of the traveller, and requirements are subject to change by the local authorities.

Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter Turkey, and need to obtain it in advance online through http://www.evisa.gov.tr. Applicants just need to log on to the following link, provide the requested information, (after the application is approved) make online payment and download their e-Visa. More information is available here  http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa

From the 2nd March 2020 all UK nationals will not need to obtain a visa for Turkey (for visits of up to 90 days in each 180 day period). This will also apply to citizens of the Schengen area countries Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Poland.

Turkey Time is GMT plus 2 hours. Daylight saving adjustments of 1 hour are applied, starting at the end of March and finishing at the end of October.

Sockets are two round pronged and 220 volts (Type C). Universal adaptors are available in most airport shops if you don't have one already. Standard European adapters will work fine, though sometimes they may feel a little loose in the sockets. All hotel rooms have electrical sockets where you can re-charge cameras, phones etc. Hair dryers are normally available on request from the hotel reception if not in your room already. If you have US appliances (110 volts) you will need a voltage converter as well as a plug adapter.

The Turkish lira was re-valued at the end of 2004 to become the ‘New Turkish Lira’. The word ‘New’ has now been dropped, and we are back to ‘Turkish Lira’ again (TRY).

It is normally cheaper to convert money to Turkish Lira in Turkey than at home. Using an ATM or a credit card will often get you the best possible exchange rates; the post and telephone office (PTT) and banks offer very reasonable rates, too. Try to use ATM machines that are attached to banks while they are open, so that if your card is swallowed you can go into the bank and get it released back to you.

It is difficult for us to specify the money that you will spend per day, however, as a general rule USD 20-50 per day can provide you with additional meals, tipping, snacks & drinks. Should you wish to purchase many souvenirs or other luxuries, of which there is a diverse range, you will have to budget for these.

A mixture of cash and credit cards are the best forms of currency. Credit cards are accepted in most restaurants, bars and pubs. MasterCard and Visa are most welcomed; American Express cards work at some ATMs and AmEx offices. Credit cards are also useful for cash advances, which allow you to withdraw Lira instantly from associated banks and ATMs throughout Turkey. Cash cards and ATM’s are widespread in most of Turkey including in Istanbul, Canakkale, Selcuk, Marmaris, Pamukkale, Fethiye, Kas, Cappadocia, and Ankara.

Luggage: Suitcases, rucksacks or fabric holdalls are all fine to bring with you to Turkey. You should also bring a small daypack/bag to take out during the day. Your main luggage will normally be left in the hotel during your sightseeing trips – you will not need to carry it far, and there are nearly always hotel porters to assist.

Luggage limits: There is no luggage limit for this tour. However, most airlines restrict you to between 20kg and 25kg for your hold luggage and between 5kg and 10kg for hand luggage. Please check with your airline before travelling to the airport.

Clothing: Turkey’s climate changes drastically, with cold winters and hot summers. In western Turkey from late March to May, spring brings with it average temperatures of around 15C, though the weather does gradually warm up with sunny days interspersed with rain showers. From May to the end of October, the climate is hot and sunny, getting cooler as the year progresses. In Central Turkey around Cappadocia, the climate is cold with regular snowfalls from the end of November until late February. With spring the weather warms and the snow disappears altogether, though it still remains cold at night and first thing in the morning. Summer starts from May onwards, with temperature reaching around the mid 30’s. The East of Turkey from late May has warmed up considerably, and stays hot until late September with sunny days, but the night time temperatures start to drop. By the end of October you can expect the first of the winter snows. So you must pack for cool and potentially wet conditions late in the year. Modesty rates highly in some parts of Turkey, especially for women and in the East, so please ensure clothes are loose fitting and not too revealing. Loose shorts are OK in tourist sites, as are T-shirts, but these should not show too much bare flesh (your shoulders should remain covered). In Eastern Turkey villages, and any mosques throughout the country, legs and arms should be covered. Attidudes are more relaxed in the seaside resorts.

Other items: We also recommend you bring a sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a basic first aid kit, toiletries, money belt, small torch, camera & charger.

We offer regular departures on this gulet cabin charter cruise between April and October starting on a Saturday. Gulet cruises are extremely popular during the peak summer months and availability is limited so we strongly recommend booking early. Private charters are also available on the same route - please contact us for prices based on your preferred travel dates and the number of people in your party.

ANZAC Day means many different things to different people. To some it is a true memorial service to pay respects to and remember family members or countrymen who lost their lives defending their homeland in World War I, while to others it symbolises a sense of community or belonging to the New Zealand and Australian way of life. For non Anzac nationals it remains a moving and important ceremonial day that brings thoughts of the sacrifices that previous generations have made for us, wherever we may come from.

Whichever may apply to you, this is a very special event that brings together many thousands of people every year on the shores of the Gallipoli peninsular on the western coast of Turkey.

We run special ANZAC day departures on all of our Turkey tours. The standard itineraries for each tour are adjusted slightly on these departures to coincide with the memorial services and to make the most of your time at Gallipoli. These special departures are indicated on the dates & prices table for each tour. Due to demand, group sizes on these dates may increase to a maximum of 45.

All of our ANZAC departures arrive at Gallipoli Cove early in the afternoon on the 24th giving us enough time to visit the museum and secure space for our groups. We then spend the night outdoors at the Cove waiting for the evocative dawn service to start. Afterwards, depending on the makeup of our group, the Australians will head to Lone Pine and the New Zealanders to Chunuk Bair for their country’s individual memorial service. Rest assured though that these special departures are not just about the ANZAC service. They all have their standard itineraries built around the service so you will still get to experience the history, culture and amazing sites that Turkey has to offer.

If you would like to book a place on this tour, please complete the online reservation form on our website (via the Dates & Prices tab on the tour page). You may make a deposit or full payment online, or just hold a reservation if you prefer (full payments are due 8 weeks before departure). We will then contact you with more details about how to complete your booking. Payments may be made by debit or credit card (subject to a card processing fee), or by making a bank transfer, or posting us a cheque/bank draft. Full details will be provided in your booking confirmation email. Please contact us if you would like any more information or have any questions before making a booking.

Travel insurance is compulsory on all of our tours and needs to cover personal accident & liability, medical expenses and repatriation, travel delay & abandonment. We also strongly recommend that you take out cover against cancellation and lost/stolen baggage. Personal medical insurance does not normally provide sufficient cover and is generally not suitable for travel on our tours. You will not be able to join your tour if you have not provided us with details of your insurance or if you arrive without cover in place (no refunds will be due in this event). More information...

You may arrange your own insurance, or you can take advantage of a comprehensive policy that we can arrange for you through Endsleigh Insurance which has been designed to be suitable for our tours. The policy is available to travellers of all nationalities and you do not need to live in the UK  to take out the policy. For full details of cover provided, prices and to apply for one of our policies, please complete travel insurance application form . Note: Any country that borders the Mediterranean is considered as 'Europe' for the purposes of travel insurance (including Turkey, Israel, Egypt and Morocco). If you are doing a tour that visits one country in 'Europe' and one that is 'Worldwide' (for example, an Egypt and Jordan tour), then you need a 'Worldwide' policy. When completing the form you should enter your travel dates including any extra days involved in overnight flights or connecting travel between your home and the tour. Our policies are not able to cover any extra time or activities other than your tour and options booked with us and your travel to & from home.

Note - to comply with insurance sales regulations, our travel insurance policies are only available to customers booking directly with us. If you have booked through a travel agent you will need to arrange your own insurance.

If your tour includes car hire, ior if you plan to arrange a hot air balloon flight locally or do some scuba diving during your tour, you should check the small print in your policy to make sure these are covered (these are covered in our policy). Please also check the maximum altitude that you will be reaching and that full cover including emergency evacuation is provided up to this altitude.

If you are taking expensive camera gear or other electronic equipment with you then please check the coverage and the fine print of your policy to ensure that you have sufficient cover.

IMPORTANT:  We must have your travel insurance details (policy number and type of insurance) before you depart or you may not be allowed to join the tour.  If you haven't told us already, please let us know the details when you can. You should take a paper copy of your insurance policy with you as you may be asked to show this at the start of the tour.

Covid-19 Before purchasing any travel insurance, please check the coverage provided for situations related to Covid-19, and for the rules about government travel advice. Your normal policy may not be suitable. Details about our own policies cover levels are given on our website .

It is impossible not to have an impact on the local environment, cultures and eco-systems when you travel. However, it is very possible to try and ensure that these impacts are as limited, or positive as possible. We are committed to ensuring that we try to leave our host countries in a better state than we found them and encourage and assist our travellers to help us with this. The following are a few simple tips that require very little effort on your part but which will help ensure that any effect you have on the locations you visit is positive rather than negative.

  • Don't prejudge: Things in different countries will almost certainly be different. That doesn't make them worse or inferior, just different.
  • Communicate: Don't expect locals to speak your language. Take the trouble to learn a few words or phrases of the local language. Don't worry about sounding silly. Most locals are patient and accommodating and appreciate you making the effort to communicate in their language.
  • Conserve energy: Be careful not to waste valuable resources. Use local resources sparingly. Switch off lights, air-conditioning and fans when you leave the hotel room and don't waste water. Remove superfluous packaging. Many countries have far less efficient waste disposal systems than ours. Remove packaging from newly acquired items before leaving home.
  • Don't litter: No matter how untidy or dirty the country you're travelling in may look to you, avoid littering, as there is no need to add to the environment's stress. Many of the countries we visit have a tough challenge dealing with rubbish and waste. Please consider taking home as much plastic waste as you can (e.g. water bottles).
  • Choose environmentally friendly products: By using environmentally friendly (bio degradable) sun creams, shampoos and detergents you can help reduce pollution.
  • Respect local customs and traditions: As you are a guest in these countries, you should also comply with the local customs. If you are friendly and well mannered, the locals will reciprocate and it will only enhance your experience. It's important to follow dress and behaviour guidelines especially when visiting religious or sacred sites (your tour leader will advise you how best to do this).
  • If a client commits an illegal act the client may be excluded from the tour and Encounters Travel shall cease to have responsibility to/for them. No refund will be given for any unused services.

All porters are employed and equipped following guidelines set by the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG).

You can stay in touch with us online by following us on Facebook and Twitter. We post updates on relevant travel news in our destination countries, special offers and discounts and other interesting travel related news and information. www.facebook.com/encounterstravel www.twitter.com/encounterstravl (yes, without the 'e')

It is important when considering and preparing to travel anywhere in the world that you have a good understanding of the country you are visiting, its laws and customs, and the possible risks and situations that may occur. This includes specific risks related to your itinerary (eg. does it involve water & can you swim, are you fit enough for the activities included), as well as more general risks such as terrorism and natural disasters.

General details and links to more information about health risks, visa requirements, money, and travel insurance are given in these tour notes. We recommend that you re-read all these before your departure as well as the small print of your travel insurance policy so you know exactly what is covered and what is not.

You should take copies of your important travel documents with you and ideally also store them online securely as a backup. Make sure that you have given us your emergency contact details and told that person where and when you are travelling. Ensure you take enough money with you and that you have access to emergency funds.

Finally, you should read through and stay updated with the current official government travel advice for your destination. We are registered partners with the UK Foreign Office's 'Travel Aware' campaign which provides further useful and invaluable information.

'Travel Aware' campaign

Traveling responsibly means minimizing plastic waste, but staying hydrated on the go is essential. At Encounters Travel we are committed to reducing single-use plastics, which is why we've partnered with Water-to-Go. Their portable filtration system removes over 99.9% of contaminants from any non-saltwater source, turning even questionable water sources into safe drinking water.

Given that tap water is un-safe to drink in many of the countries in which we operate, we recommend purchasing a Water-to-Go bottle prior to departure. This will help you avoid the use of single use plastic bottles and keep you hydrated on the go.

Save big! Get a huge 25% off your Water-to-Go bottle and other Water-to-Go products (such as filters, lids, and carriers). Use code ENCOUNTERS25 at checkout (valid in the UK, USA and Canada).

How Water-to-Go Technology works:

  • Their reusable, BPA free water bottles contain their own unique 3-in-1 filtration technology effectively providing clean safe drinking water from any non-salt water source around the world.
  • Three different (1 traditional and 2 nano) technologies are combined in one filter cartridge to remove up to 99.9999% of microbiological contaminants in water.

The three technologies used in a Water-to-Go filter are:

  • Mechanical filtration – A tiny pore size, so small contaminants can’t fit through.
  • Electrical – A positive charge reduces the pore size even further and attracts contaminants like a magnet, trapping them inside the filter.
  • Activated Carbon – Unlike most carbon based filters, instead of using adhesives to glue the carbon particles together, (which vastly reduces the carbon’s efficiency) it is contained within the membrane, helping to reduce contaminants whilst eliminating bad tastes and odours. Try filtering water from your tap at home and taste the difference!

Water-to-Go filter bottles deliver safe, healthy water worldwide

  • Water-to-Go filters remove bacteria, viruses, waterborne disease, protozoa, heavy metals such as lead as well as harmful chemicals.
  • Their filters remove Chlorine and Fluoride from tap water.
  • The filter will eliminate harmful contaminants from the water but allow beneficial minerals such as sodium and magnesium to pass through leaving you with the healthiest water possible.
  • Water-to-Go filters have been independently tested against internationally recognised standards by industry specialists including The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (UK), BCS Laboratories (USA), Bangalore Test House (India) and IMI (China).

Use Water-to-Go products and you’ll be healthier, wealthier and helping to make the world a better place!

  • Depending on filter size, each Water-to-Go filter is able to replace 260 or 400 single-use plastic water bottles!
  • They ensure you have access to safe water anywhere in the world without ever having to buy environmentally damaging bottled water.
  • Their water bottles deliver safe, clean drinking water at just 5p per litre.
  • The filter membrane is biodegradable and the shrouds are recyclable.
  • The water bottles are used and approved by everyone from backpackers to commuters, gym users to expecting mums. Perfect for everyday, outdoor and travel.

What Is a Gulet?

A gulet is a traditional Turkish sailing vessel that perfectly embodies the rich maritime heritage of the region. Originating from the southwestern coast of Turkey, particularly from the town of Bodrum, gulets are wooden yachts characterized by their broad beam and rounded aft. These beautiful boats, once used for fishing and sponge diving, have evolved into luxurious sailing vessels designed for leisure and exploration.

A typical gulet features spacious decks, comfortable cabins, and modern amenities, offering an ideal blend of tradition and luxury. The charm of a gulet lies in its handcrafted wooden structure and elegant design, making each vessel unique.

Sailing on a gulet allows travelers to experience the timeless allure of Turkey’s coastline, from the vibrant blue waters to the scenic landscapes. Whether you’re cruising along the Aegean or the Mediterranean, a gulet promises an authentic and unforgettable journey on the high seas.

Why Choose a Gulet Cruise in Turkey?

Choosing a gulet cruise in Turkey offers an unparalleled sailing experience that combines luxury, adventure, and cultural immersion. One of the top reasons to set sail on a gulet boat is the unique opportunity to explore Turkey’s breathtaking coastline, dotted with hidden coves, pristine beaches, and ancient ruins.

Unlike larger cruise ships, gulets can access secluded bays and less crowded destinations, providing a more intimate and personalized experience. Onboard, guests enjoy the comfort of well-appointed cabins, gourmet meals prepared by skilled chefs, and attentive crew members who ensure every need is met. The flexibility of a gulet cruise allows for customized itineraries, letting travelers decide on daily activities such as swimming, snorkeling, or exploring charming coastal villages.

Moreover, the serene ambiance of sailing on a gulet, with the sound of the waves and the stunning views, offers a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. For those seeking a luxurious and authentic adventure, a gulet holiday in Turkey is the perfect choice.

Reviews from our Guests

The Bedia Sultan is really beautiful – the woodwork, attention to detail and the comfortable spaces. We loved it and it was always the best yacht in the ports. Mel and her team are amazing – nothing was too Koch trouble and they forethought everything we needed, great service and lovely personalities. The food was amazing – really delicious and varied, all of it was good. Hasan is a perfectionist, cool-headed but easy to work with when we wanted to change our itinerary he gave us the best advice and accommodated is so we had the best experience. The coastline is magnificent, crystal clear waters and gorgeous scenery. We fell in love with everything in Turkey and had the most wonderful week.

It was a beautiful vacation !! Mr. Hakan from the agency had everything perfectly organized! We were taken from the airport in a luxury vehicle to the harbor where the beautiful yacht lay. From here we have the unusually pleasant and nice crew spoiled. Despite some allergies and food intolerances among us in the group, the cook has managed to make us all really happy. Very, very delicious! So we spent a carefree time with water skiing, snorkeling, boating or just let your mind wander ….. just wonderful! Thank you! We can not think of anything!

A beautiful, older, but well-maintained gulet in wooden construction. The service on board. The route through beautiful nature and small picturesque villages was particularly fascinating on the island of Simi. Steward Bilal, was a unique tip.

The whole experience in general has been very rewarding. The crew of the boat is very efficient and friendly, with a special congratulation to the cook who has made us enjoy Turkish cuisine and have been aware of all our preferences. We also thank the company and the crew for the quick management they did when we needed medical attention for one of our friends. In general everything has been very much to our liking.

We liked the Göcek-Bodrum tour very much. All the bays that Captain Yüksel could take us to were wonderful. I cannot finish by telling about the excellent meals Chef Ali has made on the boat. I would like to thank the entire crew and agency manager Erkan for their interest. Hope to see you for the next vacation. VERY LIKED

The crew was awesome! Our chef made the most delicious meals from fresh food that we selected ourselves. Interacting with Mehmet, the main crew member looking after me and my husband, was hands down the best part of our trip. Mehmet ensured we always had what we needed in a discreet way and was always a step ahead of us. The captain was incredibly kind and walked us through the maps of all of the places that we would be visiting. He also made multiple suggestions for anchorage at locations that we hadn’t planned on visiting, which was brilliant. The sailor on the boat was also incredibly kind and was constantly ensuring my husband and I had what we need.

This time it was really luxury! The Gulet – Dreamland – was well equipped, the cabins generous, the bathrooms really offer space and were cleaned daily on the finest and tidy. The chef is in a class of its own, the kitchen was very varied, there were several fish in excellent quality! The Kaptan is extremely friendly and accommodating and very competent. For us, it was an unforgettable week in the beautiful Turkish coastline.

Loved the boat and the itinerary. Beautiful Gulf of Gocova! I think we would have liked more discussion about the itinerary before we started as we would have liked to go to a few more restaurants in the evening. However the places the captain chose to anchor in were gorgeous. Thought the food could be better. Although we kept telling the chef not to provide so much we kept getting far too much food!

Scenery was stunning, the boat was comfortable, food was fabulous and the 3 crew were really great.

We had a wonderful trip! The experience was very positive from the beginning: Ender from the BlueTourTurkey agency was super quick and helpful, he answered all questions immediately and organized the trip in a very short time. Crew was also very attentive and even did more than work: Kapitaen Ismail shared his private wifi with us, Ahmed spoiled us with delicious and varied food, Oshahn even gave the child his own baseball cup. We had 3 people in our family who couldn’t swim and the crew looked after us perfectly by taking us from the yacht to the beach with dinghy every day. Thank you for a great trip and wonderful vacation!

Barış captain and his friend served very well The food was delicious, the service was perfect, the boat was great, they did their best.

We enjoyed our trip very much. The boat was beautiful and clean. The crew was wonderful — very accommodating. The food was very good — of course, we are all on diets now! The travel agents and agency were very efficient and organized — I give them very high marks. Everything they promised, they did. We all feel we got very good value for our money.

ALL ABOUT BLUE CRUISE AND GULETS

turkish gulet

The Blue Tour is the most ideal and distinctive vacation you can have in Turkey.

The goal of the Blue Tour is to take in the glory and unending beauty of the sunset. It is to take advantage of the fish, appetizers, and drinks in the calm, blue-dominated waters. It involves reading a book that you haven’t been able to finish in a while and becoming lost in it. It is to spend time alone with your significant other at dusk, travel through various distinctive bays, go swimming in clear, calm seas, and lie on the sand at the beach. Get away from the bustle and fatigue of the city and embark on an inner trip to discover how long it has been since you last felt free.

Consider taking a blue cruise around the most stunning coastlines of the Aegean and Mediterranean, in coves where green and blue embrace. A beautiful yacht where you can spend time alone with your loved ones, share days and nights, and have fun is another option for this trip.

How Did The Blue Cruise Begin?

In the Gulf of Gökova, the Blue Tour’s narrative opens. The Istiklal Court sentenced historian, translator, and author Cevat Sakir Kabaagacli (a fisherman from Halicarnassus) to kalebentlik in Bodrum for a 1925 piece that appeared in the magazine “Illustrated Week.” He would serve a three-year term. However, Cevat Sakir’s cellar days change from punishment to enjoyment. It was consequently agreed that he would be returned to Istanbul. After doing his time, Cevat Sakir relocates to Bodrum. He adopts the moniker “fisherman of Halicarnassus” after the ancient Turkish city of Bodrum and signs numerous works that are still in circulation today.

Cevat Sakir described his visits to the Gulf of Gokova, various periods of his life, and the people he met in his works. He thought it fitting to refer to this multi-day journey as the “Blue Cruise,” which he took with his companions in the Gulf of Gokova and which began in very unimpressive circumstances.

Summary Of A Day

On the boat, the day starts with a hearty breakfast in the relaxing morning chill. Typically, a hard pier comes after breakfast in the moored bay at night. They make an effort to get there before midday when the sea is calm. Everyone is free to do whatever they choose in the moored bay after lunch. Swim, dive, surf, and water ski for recreation. Everyone becomes more excited as dusk draws near, and it’s time to “sink the sun” with a drink and share some of the fish you’ve caught. You close your eyes under the millions of stars at midnight and organize your wishes at each star shift.

The Blue Cruise is too unique and complex to be explained in a few sentences. Hence, please stop by and stay with us!

Yacht Charter Turkey

Turkey’s proximity to both the Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean Sea makes it one of the ideal countries for blue tour routes. Turkey is one of the top vacation spots to think about because of this. Turkey is a popular destination with travelers seeking the sun, scenic beauty, and high standards of decency. The many tourist attractions in southwestern Turkey have become popular due to frequent flights to international airports. In the summer, numerous travelers visit areas like Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye, and Gocek. These locations are all included in the Blue Tour itinerary.

Turkey is one of the greatest international possibilities for your upcoming trip because of its vibrant and hospitable culture. With its tranquil, turquoise waters in the eastern Mediterranean, Turkey is the ideal spot for your next journey. The sixth-most popular tourist destination worldwide is Turkey. It has 16 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and this number is growing.

It is now clear why yacht routes are becoming more popular in the Turkish Sea. Turkey is the world’s top producer of contemporary superyachts and opulent gulets, boasting the most reputable shipyards. Various options include elegant motor yachts, elegant sailing yachts, and classic Turkish gulets.

The luxurious Blue Tour in Turkey offers a variety of tour alternatives to suit any traveler. You can explore a historic location, undiscovered bays, or an old settlement that has seen history. Your entire trip to Turkey would be an unforgettable journey, whatever you decide to do. Every time you go out, you have a brand new, pleasurable, and memorable experience.

Prepare to go on a blue tour in Turkey, where you won’t be able to discover your soul mate among the picturesque villages and distinctive ultra-luxurious decks. Turkey would wow you instead, from touring historical monuments to peacefully residing, taking part in water activities, and navigating the streets.

Blue Cruise Routes

Between Bodrum and Demre, the Aegean and Mediterranean bays make up the Blue Cruise’s middle portion of the route. Another option is to begin the tour in Istanbul and continue on to Antalya. The flavor of the Blue Trip is concealed, nevertheless, in mooring in nearby bays. Today’s “Blue Cruises” are typically made in 20- to 40-meter wooden gulet-style boats. Although it can sail because of the wind, motor power is frequently used after that.

The beginning of the Blue Journey trip is in Bodrum. Cruises to the Cyclades and the Twelve Islands are also scheduled via Kos Island, which is practically next door, despite the fact that it makes a good starting point for Blue cruises to both Gökova and Hisaronu bays.

While not particularly preferred, the northern path, known as Gulluk or Mandalya Bay, runs from Bodrum to Kusadasi. After anchoring historic cities like Didyma and Lassos, you may go on land excursions, which is helpful to individuals with a passion for archaeology.

The first place is Gökova, which is a little different but livelier thanks to its developing beaches and seaside resorts. Along with Gökova’s captivating natural beauty, there are the remains of the ancient city of Keramos, whose primary draw is Cleopatra’s Beach. According to rumors, he and his boyfriend Anthony imported sand from Egypt to this beach! This theme makes the region seem more exotic and intriguing.

Knidos, which is southwest of Gökova, was a significant city in antiquity. All tourists taking the Blue Cruise today will find it to be a great location. You can go swimming, snorkeling, and engaging in other water activities in the clear, blue waters at a number of private beaches and isolated caverns. If you enjoy fishing, you can locate a site quickly. In the evening, we’ll serve whatever we can catch and the BBQ our chef promised.

Your next stop is Datça, one of the three places in the world with the highest oxygen ratio without any industrialization. Datça is like a dream town where you may stroll about with its distinctive and clean environment, restaurants, bars, and craft shops. You can purchase mementos to take home, give to loved ones, or keep as a reminder of your unique blue cruise journey.

Beyond the Gulf of Hisaronu is Marmaris. Marmaris is home to the most prestigious hotels in addition to sailors in the Aegean. Iztuzu Beach is one of the few places on earth where you can view a sea turtle, or more specifically, a Caretta-Caretta. Small boats can be used to enjoy the river, and you can go to Dalyan to see the well-known Kaunos archaeological site. You travel through the Dalyan Canal to the sea, astounded by the splendor of the king’s tombs. Spas and pampering mud baths are further options.

Fethiye is the final stop. This town is quite large. It has one of the busiest ports in the world. It has one of the busiest ports in the area. There are numerous bays and islands in Fethiye. You would also stop at Gocek, another Gulf of Fethiye town, on your way. Gocek has a top-notch marina where you may witness the most exquisite ships in the port. The gorgeous blue lagoon and nature reserve are visible when you visit the well-known Oludeniz, which is situated south of Fethiye. Xanthos and Letoon, a Unesco World Heritage Site, are where you may also find Lycian ruins.

East of Fethiye are the small but well-known settlements of Kalkan and Kaş. The cobblestone streets, upscale stores, good restaurants, and hip pubs in these places are what really contribute to their foreign atmosphere.

The sunken city of Kekova is the next destination on your tour. The magnificent Ottoman Castle, which is situated nearby, displays the splendor of the Ottoman Empire.

Antalya is the final stop. It is one of Turkey’s biggest and most popular vacation spots. It is a city with a wonderful climate and several big hotels that welcome a lot of people all year. The Old City of Antalya, whose winding, narrow streets connect to create restaurants, bars, and stores, looks out over the port. One of the most significant sights and must-see locations in the Old City is Hadrian’s Gate, which is situated on Main Street.

Plus, to boot, you cannot go wrong. 5)If you are after traditional Turkish food, not too fancy, or even some local grub from H, come check out  Megri at the edge of the Old Town. A favorite with the locals, it constantly says pumping out local and international dishes for a reasonably good price. Best places to drink ! In the Old Town Paspatur, you will find the most popular spot for drinking – Bar Street. You will find your pick along there; venture a little further for me other great places to end the day over a cold beverage. 1)  Car Cemetery can't go past the ever-popular Car Cemetery for an excellent night outer . Found on the main bar street in the Old Town, you can see it with the car popping out of the roof as you walk down the trough. With local bands playing most nights and a DJ in between, you can sit out in the streets and enjoy the road chatting with friends or bust a move or two on the dance floor. This is one of the most popular bars for all the Turkey Gulet cruise customers to have a drink. 2)  Café Park Terrace . For a drink with a view, walk further out of the central part of town and find Café Park Terrace. With a vast terrace overlooking Fethiye Harbour, you cannot miss this place for sunset while in the city. Amazing view enjoying a cold one. 3)  Corner Bar . Found just on the main roundabout in town and just around the corner of the famous bar street, you can not miss Corner Bar for the best cocktails in town. The super friendly staff has some excellent music tests, so for more local sounds, head here and chill out on their rooftop bar, and be sure not to miss the fruit daiquiris – the best in town. 4) If coffee is your head along the waterfront to  Café Osmanli – it has the famous “Movember mustache” as its symbol, so you can't go wrong in recognizing it. They have loads of coffees on the menu and some pretty tasty too. 5)If drinks on the beach sound too good to miss, stop at Buzz Bar and enjoy a cocktail on their open deck overlooking beautiful Oludeniz Beach. B lue Cruise Fethiye  Gulets starting from Fethiye. Can you charter a yacht  in Fethiye? Fethiye is one of the most popular spots to join on a Sail Turkey or Turkish Blue cruise . In Fethiye harbor, you will find all kinds of sailing yachts and gulets . The standard style gulets are the ones that tend to make voyages in and out of Fethiye, but you can also view some impressive luxury gulets in the harbor. The Fethiye to Olympos Blue Cruise is the most popular cruise departing from Fethiye. You can also jump on a Fethiye to Marmaris cruise. These Fethiye cruises are either 4-day options or return to-Fethiye whole-week cruises. Another chance to enjoy blue cruising is to Charter a Private Gulet; various gulets, from Small boats to Luxury Gulets and Motor yachts, are available to private charter in Fethiye.

A Quick Guide to Budget Gulet Sailing in Turkey for Backpackers

gulet cruises fethiye turkey

You won’t find a better way to explore Turkey’s Turquoise Coast than from the decks of a gulet (a traditional wooden boat). But did you know you can experience a blue cruise like this on a backpacker’s budget? You can sail the stunning Turkish Riviera from Fethiye to Olympos on a 4-day cabin charter from just $260. That’s crazy cheap.

Imagine this…

Watching a display of shooting stars as you drift off to sleep, no noise but the waves lapping against the side of the boat. Waking up to the sunrise in a secluded cove, to the smell of pine and herbs and honey. Padding barefoot along the deck, bracing yourself for a dive into water that sparkles like gemstones. Afterwards, you plot the day’s adventures over a breakfast spread of tomato, cheese, cucumber, olives, coffee, bread, and jams.

The catch? For the cheapest prices, you’ll have to share a boat and can expect the facilities to be basic. Oh, but it’s worth it though.

Read on to discover why.

WHY TAKE A FETHIYE-OLYMPOS BLUE CRUISE

I used to be scared of the sea .  One of my first memories is of being on a ferry aged 3, afraid to go anywhere near the guardrail. My mind boggled at how anyone could think boats were safe.

A gulet cruise in Turkey converted me.

It was an ex’s idea. We were in Fethiye , heading for Olympos on the Turquoise Coast on the south-west of the country. A backpacker’s haven with treehouses and beach-side ruins, it has drawn hippy types for decades.

The scenic coastal route to Olympos would take a few days and a few buses. But in Fethiye, we discovered that a 3-night cabin charter on gulet cruise could take us along the same route.

This stretch of coastline isn’t the easiest to explore by road. Many of the villages and bays along this coast were inaccessible to road traffic until the 1970s and, despite the new highways, there are still many parts that are difficult to access by car or public transport.

What better than to drift lazily between them on a boat?

A cabin charter is where you rent a room on a boat with other travellers (I use the word ‘room’ loosely). Once I learned the price, I was sold. With food and accommodation costs factored in, it wasn’t much more expensive than making our own way there.

Any fears I had of water were quickly dispelled once I strapped on a snorkel mask and jumped into those crystal clear turquoise seas. The food was as good as a restaurant, but with a much better view.

It wasn’t long before I was a convert to travelling by boat.

WHAT IS A BLUE CRUISE?

Gulet sailing in Turkey refers to a type of  sailing charter in this southwestern corner of Turkey, typically week-long liveaboard trips along the stretch of coast from Bodrum to Antalya with an emphasis on enjoying the nature as much as the sights and towns.

Gulet cruises in Turkey are also commonly referred to as a ‘ blue cruise ‘ or ‘ blue voyage ‘. Same thing.

The gulet cruise industry is popularly credited to Cevat Sakir – the Fisherman of Halicarnassus  – a writer who was exiled to Bodrum in 1925.

He fell in love with the simplicity of life and beauty of the area, often taking his literary friends out on sponge-diving boats when they visited. Several books were published about these trips, and before long fishing boats had been converted for the tourists seeking the same experience.

WHAT IS A GULET?

A gulet is a type of traditional Turkish wooden motor sailing vessel, originally used for fishing and sponging. If you’re wondering how to say ‘gulet’, it’s pronounced more like ‘goo-let’ than ‘gull-et’.

Although gulets do have sails, you can expect to motor cruise most of the time. Since gulets became popular for charters, adaptations have been made to the design to make it more comfortable for living aboard but less suitable for sailing. They have roomy decks with plenty of space for al fresco dining and sunbathing, and are wide and stable vessels.

The downside of motor cruising is the engine noise. And if you’re looking to learn how to sail, this is not the trip for you.

But if you want to experience life at sea for a few days and explore the coast by boat then gulet sailing in Turkey is great fun and great value. Turkey isn’t the only place in the Mediterranean you can gulet cruise; similar vessels have cropped up in Croatia and Montenegro, but this stretch of coast is the spiritual home.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A CABIN CHARTER

Most boats offering cabin charters have around 12 passengers and 3 crew, although some party boats cram on more than that. Your meals are provided on the boat and there’s ample room on deck for lounging around, sunbathing, playing cards. A bimini provides shade and protection from the sun. You’ll spend most nights at anchor, hanging out with your fellow passengers, although there are opportunities to link up with other boats if you feel like it (particularly at the infamous Pirate Bay disco). It’s a great way to travel for singles, although you find plenty of couples and friends on the cabin charters too.

The cabins on budget boats are tiny and unlikely to have (working) A/C, meaning it’s more comfortable to sleep on a mattress on deck. If privacy/air-conditioning/showers are more your style then check out more expensive voyages with higher spec boats.

Typical stops between Fethiye and Olympos include:

  • Butterfly Valley

Other hubs where you can start/finish a gulet cruise are:

  • Rhodes (for Greek islands)

The sunken ruins at Kevoka from a gulet

HOW MUCH DOES A GULET CRUISE COST?

So you think sailing’s just for the super-rich? That’s what I thought too. Having grown up inland with no particular interest or experience of watersports, I’d never given sailing a moment’s consideration. I assumed that it was out of my budget and didn’t see the appeal.

Until I tried it.

Cabin charters are the best way to try sailing on a budget

  • Cabin charters are shared trips where you rent a cabin rather than the whole boat
  • Itineraries tend to be fixed
  • It’s a great way to meet people if you’re travelling solo
  • Worried about sharing a small space with strangers? Gulets are spacious compared to standard cruising yachts

What’s a typical price for a gulet cruise?

The cheapest rates I’ve seen online for 2018 are around the  € 200 mark for the 4-day Fethiye-Olympos route, which tends to be the cheapest option. The higher the price, the better the facilities on the boat. 7-day itineraries start at around €3 00 .

When comparing operators it’s wise to check what’s included. Some allow you to bring your own booze, which can make a difference to your budget if you’re bringing the party spirit. Otherwise alcoholic drinks are sold on board.

Kaş and Kalekoy from the water

BOOKING A CABIN CHARTER ON A GULET

If you’re travelling in peak season (July/August) you should consider booking in advance in order to secure the itinerary/boat that you’re after. That said, there is plenty of competition so it’s not strictly necessary.

The benefits of booking when you’re already in Turkey are that you’ll be able to compare operators, get a sense of the other passengers and crew, and potentially negotiate a lower price—particularly in shoulder season or if you’re travelling solo and hope to avoid paying the dreaded single supplement.

Some people like to party more than others, so talk to the operators to find the boat that’s the right fit for you. Find out who else has booked, make sure you know what’s included in the cost, and don’t forget to check out online reviews.

Things to bear in mind:

  • You will be sharing a small space and basic facilities with strangers
  • Expect to sleep on deck under the stars, it’s too hot in the cabins unless you’re splurging on a luxury boat with A/C
  • Hangovers at sea are an awful thing

Speaking of hangovers . . .

How to avoid a party boat, if that’s not your scene:

  • The cheaper the voyage, the more likely it will be full of party animals who have lined the freezer with booze
  • Particularly so in the university holidays – July/August
  • Fethiye-Olympos (and the reverse) tends to be the cheapest route and most popular with backpackers and young travellers
  • Check the ages of other passengers when booking

Olympos beach

I loved the gulet cruise experience so much that I brought a group of friends back the following year.

It wasn’t my last sailing experience either, since then I’ve gone on to sail on a tall ship around the Balearics , crewed on a classic yacht, and been a volunteer crew member on the Phoenician Ship Expedition around Africa.

What is a Gulet?

A Gulet is a traditional Turkish wooden sailing yacht that is designed explicitly for cruising along the beautiful Turkish coast. These vessels are known for their elegant design, spacious interiors, and comfortable accommodations. Gulets typically range in size from 15 to 40 meters and can accommodate anywhere from 6 to 20 passengers.

Gulets are built with a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern amenities, offering a perfect blend of authenticity and comfort. Each Gulet is unique in terms of design and layout. Still, they generally feature cosy cabins with en-suite bathrooms, a spacious deck for sunbathing and dining, and a fully equipped kitchen where the onboard chef prepares delicious meals.

The beauty of a gulet lies in its ability to provide an intimate and personalized cruising experience. Unlike larger cruise ships, gulets can access smaller and more secluded bays and coves, allowing passengers to explore hidden gems inaccessible to other vessels. With their friendly and experienced crew, gulets offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making you feel at home throughout your journey.
