Heesen announces update on revolutionary hybrid 50m Project Orion

By Anna Ingles 6 September 2023
Dutch shipyard Heesen has announced the progress of YN 20750, also known as Project Orion, as it moves forward on schedule. This magnificent yacht is scheduled for delivery in Q1 2025, and promises to redefine luxury yachting with its innovative features and unparalleled design.
While NASA's Orion spacecraft ventures into deep space, Heesen's 50m (163ft) superyacht Project Orion is designed to traverse the seven seas in utmost luxury and silence, reaching speeds of up to 10 knots with a combination of revolutionary hybrid propulsion and the industry-renowned Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF). This groundbreaking combination was first introduced in 2008 with luxury yacht charter HOME , which received international acclaim for its innovative technology and avant-garde design.
Project Orion, designed by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects with interior design by Cristiano Gatto, exudes a strong character with its striking exterior lines and contemporary interior. The luxury yacht accommodates up to 12 guests in a six-cabin layout, including an exquisite owners' suite on the main deck. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow the owners to immerse themselves in the beauty of the surrounding nature while onboard. The lower deck features the additional five guest cabins, offering a winning configuration for both private use and luxury yacht charters .
Incorporating feedback from previous projects and market research, Project Orion introduces two major layout innovations. By moving the engine room forward, a generous wellness area of approximately 26 sqm is created, providing direct access to a spacious swim platform. Equipped with a sauna, gymnasium, and day head, this area serves as a haven for relaxation and rejuvenation. With a shallow draft of just 2.15m, Project Orion can navigate shallow waters, offering the experience of exploring island archipelagos like the Bahamas up close, something typically associated with smaller yachts due to accessibility issues.
The sundeck layout onboard the motor yacht has also been reimagined, enhancing privacy for guests when docked stern-to in a marina. The whirlpool is now located forward, surrounded by ample sun pads. The sundeck's versatility is further emphasized by the ability to transform the space into a perfect party area. An expansive wet bar, dining table, and various relaxation zones create an ideal entertainment space spanning 77 sqm.
Beyond its stunning design, Project Orion boasts remarkable fuel efficiency. The 50m FDHF series by Heesen is known for its ultra-quiet operation and fuel-saving capabilities. Consuming only 98 liters per hour at 12 knots and a mere 45 liters per hour at 10 knots in hybrid mode, Project Orion sets new standards for fuel efficiency in a yacht of its size. Powered by two compact MTU 12V 2000 M61 (IMO III) engines, meticulous weight control and a lightweight build contribute to the exceptional performance that Heesen is renowned for.
It is currently unknown whether motor yacht Project Orion will be available for charter, however, if you're interested in hiring a yacht of a similar caliber take a look at all Heesen yachts for charter .

Heesen Yachts Unveils its Most Sustainable Superyacht Yet
Scheduled for delivery in early 2025, Project Orion represents a leap forward in sustainable yachting.
By Grace Taylor
Dutch superyacht builder Heesen Yachts has announced its latest achievement in sustainable luxury, Project Orion . Scheduled for delivery in early 2025, the 164-ft superyacht represents a leap forward in sustainable yachting.
Crafted from lightweight aluminum and featuring advanced hybrid propulsion, Project Orion boasts an impressive 30% reduction in environmental impact compared to traditional motor yachts of the same size. The innovative hybrid system not only enhances efficiency but also ensures virtually silent cruising, with noise levels comparable to softly falling rain. This unique engine system allows guests to immerse themselves in tranquility, enjoying their surroundings without interruption, while the yacht transitions between locations.
Project Orion is the third vessel in Heesen’s advanced 164-ft FDHF aluminum series with hybrid propulsion, following the successful delivery of Home in 2017, the world’s first fast-displacement superyacht equipped with hybrid propulsion.

“Building yachts with a reduced environmental impact is part of our long-term strategy,” says Mark Cavendish, Heesen’s chief commercial officer. “Following the success of charter yacht Home , we see that increasingly more clients appreciate Heesen’s hybrid solutions, especially due to their quietness.”

Project Orion ‘s memorable design, envisioned by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, features a near-vertical bow and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the interiors with natural light. The contemporary interior, crafted by Italian designer Cristiano Gatto, is customizable to meet the owner’s preferences, blending luxury with sustainability.
“We conduct a lot of research into the materials we use. For example, we use leather that is certified from the food industry because it is a product that would otherwise be thrown away,” says Gatto.

Onboard, Heesen ensures that luxury and comfort are not compromised in the pursuit of sustainability. Amenities include a large swim platform seamlessly connected to a sauna and gym area, an expansive sundeck, and a master suite with stunning floor-to-ceiling windows.
“The yacht industry is constantly investing in new technologies and solutions for a more sustainable future. Alternative fuels like methanol and hydrogen, although promising, will take time to become available in sufficient quantities and require major technical modifications to the design of yachts. Project Orion is one of the most efficient yachts currently available on the market and will be on the water from next year,” adds Cavendish.
Available for sale, Project Orion represents a significant leap forward in sustainable yachting, setting a new standard for eco-conscious luxury on the high seas.

Heesen’s 50m Project Orion on schedule
The hull and superstructure have been joined on the dutch shipyard’s latest hybrid project from its fdhf series….
Project Orion features a hybrid propulsion system capable of reaching 10 knots, with Heesen using its signature Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) on the lightweight aluminium yacht.
Twelve guests are accommodated in six staterooms, with the owners' suite located on the main deck. The five guest cabins, two twins, two doubles and one VIP room are on the lower deck.
The design of Project Orion incorporates several layout innovations based on data from market research and feedback from Heesen’s previously delivered yachts. By moving the engine room forward, the shipbuilder has created a wellness area of about 26 sqm, which grants direct access to the large, fixed swim platform.
The changes to the sundeck layout, such as moving the whirlpool forward and surrounding it with sun pads, provide more privacy for guests when the yacht is docked stern-to in a marina.
Project Orion also has a draft of just 2.15m that allows it to cruise in the Bahamas and the small creeks in the Mediterranean.
Heesen adds that the FHDF series is not only quiet but fuel efficient too. At 12 knots, Orion will consume 98 litres per hour, excluding hotel load, while at 10 knots in hybrid mode, consumption falls to a mere 45 litres per hour, delivered by two MTU 12V 2000 M61 (IMO III) engines of just 600kW each.
The yacht is scheduled for delivery in 2025.

A Peek Inside Heesen’s Project Orion
- By Yachting Staff
- December 30, 2022
Heesen Yachts in the Netherlands has released the first images of the 164-foot Project Orion.
Cristiano Gatto is handling interior décor that, according to Heesen, reflects and complement the yacht’s “progressive exterior lines,” sole-to-ceiling windows and open bulwarks.
“The interior style of Project Orion is the result of our research moved by matching and partially contrasting needs: comfort in luxury,” Gatto stated in a press release, adding that he sees the yacht’s interiors as “contemporary in a whole new way.”
Heesen says all materials and furniture are being engineered to reduce weight, ease installation and streamline maintenance of concealed equipment. More than 37 materials are aboard the yacht, ranging from high-gloss woods to woven leather, marble and custom carpets.
Project Orion is part of Heesen’s 50-meter FDHF aluminum series, which uses hybrid power. According to the shipyard, the yacht’s twin 800-horsepower MTU 12V 200 M61 engines will produce a top speed of 16.3 knots; at 10 knots in hybrid mode, fuel consumption is just shy of 12 gallons per hour.
When will Heesen launch Project Orion? The yard says construction is on schedule, with delivery in February 2025. The yacht is being built on spec and is available for sale.

PROJECT ORION | YN20457
Like her NASA spacecraft inspiration, the interior of PROJECT ORION is the result of meticulous research and uses highly engineered and streamlined reduced weight materials. The stunning architecture and open bulwarks have given Cristiano Gatto and his team the backdrop on which to layer a rich palette of 37 different materials including high gloss woods, woven leather and marble. Further, by keeping the colour-scheme neutral the spaces complement the vast panoramic views from the seemingly frameless windows.
