Marko Dimitrijevic: Yacht Sailing and Cloud City

Marko dimitrijevic discusses how riding a yacht can help you take photographs clouds.

Marko Dimitrijevic's profile picture

Marko Dimitrijevic , Community Contributor

We don't always notice the clouds, especially if our head is in them!

Yacht, train, airplane or car. I’m blessed to have been able to travel across the world to witness some of the world’s more beautiful natural phenomena. But not all of the best sights are half a world away. Sometimes, you need only look up for a stunning view.

I’m talking, of course, about the natural and always-changing canvas that is the sky. Clouds in particular add drama and texture to any photograph, but only if you know how to best capture them.

Most people have had the frustrating experience of being awestruck by a particular weather event, and unable to do it justice by photo. It can be especially hard to get the sky right when there is an object in the foreground: focus on the sky and you darken the object; focus on the object and you wash out the sky.

Find out what's happening in Miami with free, real-time updates from Patch.

When taking photos of the sky, or with the sky as a focal point, it’s all about atmosphere: literally and figuratively.

If your subjects are the clouds themselves, the more dynamic your clouds, the better. Things to pay attention to include:

  • Time of day: If you wait until the sun is at its brightest, the sun will directly appear and disappear behind clouds, giving you a range in light and dark for a dynamic sky photograph. On the other hand, sunrise and sunset will give your clouds fiery, gorgeous coloring.
  • Type of cloud: You learned this in school, but most adults forget the difference between cumulus, stratus, cumulonimbus, and statocumulus. Each has a unique personality, so just as the personality of a human subject will inform a portrait, the cloud’s personality informs the shot.
  • Storms: Many photographers salivate over stormy weather for the cloudy drama it provides.

marko dimitrijevic yacht

When photographing the sky, and clouds specifically, filters are your friend. Polarizing filters help to separate clouds from the sky. If you have objects in the foreground, you might also consider a graduated neutral density filter.

I also recommend using a tripod to experiment with different moods. Different exposures can be the difference between a dark and sinister atmosphere and a brighter, serene one.

Cows and Clouds

Lastly, whipping out your equipment and snapping at random just won’t do if you want to get truly fantastic results. So here are a few steps to make sure your approach is on point.

  • Research: Scope out the perfect spot well in advance. If you’re traveling, maybe there is a landmark you’d like to visit where great clouds would be the perfect accent. Look at the weather forecast, pick a time of day, and shoot away.
  • Be prepared: Depending on the place and time of day, you’ll need to dress accordingly. At sunrise and sunset it can be cold; if there’s a storm, you’ll need a poncho; if it’s high noon, a hat will come in handy. Protect yourself and your gear.
  • Composition: Every good photographer simply has to keep composition in mind. The rule of thirds is your friend — in cloud photographs, you might consider having the sky fill the top two thirds, and the land the extra third. Or, look for interesting elements in the foreground to frame the sky with, like trees or mountains.

All in all, it doesn’t take a trip to Bhutan to get a great photograph (although I highly recommend Bhutan!). All it takes is the right atmosphere, useful equipment, a smart approach, and the will to point your camera skywards. There are some incredible clouds here in Miami and all over Florida. Don't believe me? Just look up!

Lake proudly served as an active duty airman in the United States Air Force, and as a medical technician serving in Texas, New York, and California. Lake now runs JDL Corporate Interiors in Boston, Massachusetts–a high-end corporate interior renovation construction company. A self-described “lover of all things natural and built by man,” Lake developed a special connection to the ocean during seasons of offshore fishing and shark tagging in the waters of the northeast of Nantucket. Lake shares that “the dense unique oceanic biodiversity and the impacts of man from pollution and commercial fishing are readily apparent when the eyes can no longer see the land, and man does what he wishes with no rules, destroying the sea for commercial enterprise and profit. My profound experiences offshore in the Canyons and the Eastern area off of Nantucket have shed light on the conservation that is needed to protect these natural resources.” He finds peace and great love while free diving and being underwater in places like the Florida Keys and The Bahamas, where “the true beauty of the pristine Exuma waters is a moving experience like no other.” Joining the Advisory Board of Beneath the Waves provides him with the opportunity to be an impactful change agent, and preserve the ocean for future generations of this beautiful planet.

marko dimitrijevic on COVID-19

Like sailing on a yacht, being an entrepreneur is not easy. Even in the best economic climate, the challenges of building and maintaining a business can be daunting. It is no surprise then that the current Covid-19 situation, financial markets’ volatility, political uncertainties, and constantly changing regulations make small business growth particularly difficult. As an entrepreneur myself, I have weathered a fair share of crises. Every predicament has presented the opportunity to slow down, to take a step back and rethink strategy and direction. These are my tips for keeping your entrepreneurial spirit intact and sustaining a dignified and ethical business model during hard times. 1. Flex Your Entrepreneur Muscles The ability to adapt to change—to modify plans and amend tactics—is an important component of managing your life — and your business. Flexibility and agility are the founding principles of entrepreneurship and they are what will bring you and your product success. Change really is the only constant for entrepreneurs. It is accelerated and accentuated in crisis conditions. Make sure to re-engage the mechanisms that made you a successful entrepreneur in the first place. 2. Be Creative Creativity is likely what got you this far in your entrepreneurial journey. Your ability to think of new ideas, see problems from various angles, and introduce innovative solutions are assets. Use them. Consider new avenues for reaching clients, rethink your existing products, and work around any obstacles. Tap all your resourceful and imaginative energies and channel them toward your business. If there is a time to think outside the box it is now. 3. Build Partnerships and Community Never underestimate the value of your professional network. Business associates and collaborative partners take on even greater value during a crisis. Review your contacts and identify those who can be helpful and cooperative at this time. Think together about pertinent offers you can make to clients right now. Show your client community that you are still thinking about them and introducing them to new and helpful businesses that care about them too. 4. Don’t Play on Fear With the abundance of information and 24-hour news cycles, it can be tempting to use an incoming news story as an opportunity to sell your product or services. This kind of “newsjacking” capitalizes on fear and plays on people’s vulnerabilities. Your business model should be sound enough to avoid manipulative measures to grow. 5. Evaluate Everything Often The best gift a crisis can give you is the chance to appraise every aspect of your business. We rarely take the time to ask ourselves major venture-related questions. Invest energies in reviewing if you are in the right business space? Are you targeting the right audiences? Does your marketing strategy need revamping?

When things are stable and going well, we assume that we shouldn’t“fix what isn’t broken.” When tides turn and the market is unpredictable, you can and should do all that fixing. Think: if it isn’t broken now, will it break soon?

Don’t give up or get disheartened. Just like every other hardship in life, this too shall pass. Entrepreneurs are a strong and resilient bunch. You can survive this time and emerge as the better version of yourself and your business. Learn as much as you can, grow in the areas and skills that you want, and emerge from this period with a thriving and successful company.

BIG BIG ANIMALS, BIG EMOTIONS

That’s what you’ll feel and see with the experiences shared in Amos Nachoum and Marko Dimitrijevic’s new book, BIG. These award-winning wildlife photographers take us on an unparalleled journey around the world to encounter the biggest animals out there and how such big animals fit into our world view and lives.

In addition to the captivating photography, BIG is so unique since it is crafted through the emotions that the photographers felt during their encounters. Marko and Amos allow the viewer to feel the awe, inspiration, fear and fascination that they felt with each animal encounter; they share, not just their photography skill, but their emotions while seeing giant grizzly and polar bears, while diving with great white sharks and while observing leopards, seals, bison and more.

With a combined 70 years of photographing the most breathtaking moments in nature, Marko Dimitrijevic and Amos Nachoum have assembled their best photographs for the first time ever into one book – BIG. They share their love for nature and their awe at encountering giants in their natural habitat. As they share their emotions and their photography, they invite the reader to reflect upon what we can each learn about ourselves while observing and protecting these majestic creatures.
