The Keys to Dan Brown's Inferno

The Mendacium  –  The Mendacium,  captained by the “provost”   is a 300 million dollar, “237-foot luxury yacht” equipped with a “spa, pool, cinema, personal submarine, and helicopter pad” (Brown, 37).

Yacht  – A yacht is typically a boat or small ship that is recognized as unique for being particularly luxurious.

The Consortium  – A group of individuals or organizations that collaborate to achieve a common goal.  In Dan Brown’s Inferno, the Consortium is a powerful organization that works for the “provost” and provides services to the clients of the “provost”. The word is also frequently used in academic circles.

Provost  – Provost  has a number of meanings, most associated with a high-ranking official or figure of authority.  In  Inferno, the “provost” provides services to clients of the Consortium.  His client, we will subsequently learn, is Bertrand Zobrist.

Vayentha – “ Vayentha is the name of the spiked hair young woman in a context that recalls Buddhism may give a clue to her name. Another possibility is from the avatar world of  Subeta  where someone named Vayentha identifies herself as a  Time Lord , the inhabitants of a science fiction series on British television” (anonymous). The young woman will bring to mind for many The Girl with Dragon Tattoo , a character in one of the books and  films from the bestselling trilogy by Stieg Larsson.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

sheikh  -The term  sheikh  is an Arabic term meaning “elder” or “leader.” The “provost” in  Inferno  provides services to powerful people such as sheikhs throughout his life.

The decisions of our past are the architects of our present –  We have mentioned the criticism Brown has evoked for his use of italics. Here the statement while original in this form may be related to the Buddhist concept of karma : According to Buddhism, this inequality is due not only to heredity, environment, “nature and nurture”, but also to Karma. In other words, it is the result of our own past actions and our own present doings. We ourselves are responsible for our own happiness and misery. We create our own Heaven. We create our own Hell. We are the architects of our own fate.

The Mendacium

The Mendacium is the name of the boat from which the provost runs his business. Sinskey was brought to The Mendacium to view the video Zobrist had made. Langdon was also brought to this boat after he was captured by the SRS officers. Langdon was one of the few people who realized that The Mendacium was a Latin word referring to the Greek god of deception.

Florence is the city in Italy where Langdon wakes after he believes that he has narrowly missed being killed by a gunshot. The author chooses Florence as the main city in which the story is set because it is the place where Dante lived for a good deal of his life. It was this city that Dante loved and from which he was exiled.

Inferno by Dan Brown is the fourth installment in Brown’s Robert Langdon series of mystery/thriller novels, following (in order) Angels & Demons , The Da Vinci Code , and The Lost Symbol , and preceding Origin . Each edition covers a self-contained story, so readers need not follow the series in order, and often includes themes centered on European and Christian history and cultural traditions. The title character, Robert Langdon, is the only recurring character. Inferno won the Goodreads Choice Awards Best Mystery & Thriller in 2013 and was adapted into a feature film in 2016, directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon.

The book’s title is a reference to Inferno , the first part of Dante Alighieri’s three-part epic poem Divina Commedia , or Divine Comedy in English, which was completed in the year 1320 and traced Dante’s fictional pilgrimage through the three realms of the afterlife: Inferno (Hell), Purgatorio (Purgatory), and Paradiso (Heaven). Written in the 14th-century Tuscan dialect, the Divine Comedy is credited with establishing the modern Italian language, and Dante Alighieri remains one of the most important writers in the history of Italian literature. Textual and thematic references to Inferno abound in Brown’s novel.

This study guide refers to the 2013 Doubleday hardcover edition.

Content Warning: Inferno depicts violence throughout and includes a scene of sexual assault. This study guide quotes and obscures the author’s use of a derogatory reference to a Romani person.

Plot Summary

The majority of Dan Brown’s Inferno is told in the past tense third person from the many points of view of an ensemble cast of characters but mostly from that of Professor Robert Langdon. At the beginning of the novel, Langdon awakens in a hospital in Florence, Italy with no recollection of how he got there or the last few days. As Langdon attempts to get his bearings, an assassin named Vayentha arrives at the hospital and shoots his attending doctor in the chest in an attempt to break into Langdon’s room, but Langdon escapes with the help of a young British doctor named Sienna Brooks. Vayentha is revealed to be an agent of The Consortium, an independent, international organization focused on providing special ops to the highest bidder regardless of that bidder’s intentions. The Consortium is led by “the provost,” an unnamed character who leads the organization from a yacht-turned-mobile command center, The Mendacium .

Following his escape from the hospital, Langdon is taken to Sienna’s apartment, where he discovers her history as an ostracized genius child, and he attempts to piece together what has happened to him. He discovers a Faraday pointer in his coat pocket, which reveals a projection of Botticelli’s Map of Hell , based on Dante’s rendition in Inferno . From clues placed on the Map , Langdon eventually deciphers a message: “ cerca trova ,” Italian for “seek and ye shall find.” The phrase is famously painted in the background of The Battle of Marciano by Giorgio Vasari, which hangs in the nearby Palazzo Vecchio. As Langdon and Sienna make their way across Florence to the Palazzo, they are pursued by soldiers led by a man named Brüder, who Langdon also assumes is trying to kill him.

Once at the Palazzo, Langdon deciphers the clue in Vasari’s painting as pointing him to Dante Alighieri’s death mask, also typically on display at the Palazzo, but the mask is missing. Langdon discovers that he was at the Palazzo the night before with a colleague, Ignazio Busoni, and the two were captured on camera stealing the death mask after apparently locating another clue. Langdon and Sienna also learn that the death mask has been under the private ownership of an infamous biochemist named Bertrand Zobrist, who Sienna explains once proposed radical, violent methods for solving a perceived global overpopulation problem. From a message left by Busoni, who died the same night, Langdon concludes that the mask has been moved to the Baptistry of San Giovanni across the city. He and Sienna encounter Vayentha as they leave the Palazzo, and Sienna kills Vayentha.

At the Baptistry, Langdon and Sienna locate Dante’s death mask and discover a riddle poem written on the inside by Zobrist. The poem implies Zobrist has planted a biological weapon in a secret location with the intention of releasing a plague of his own design, meant to kill billions of people. Langdon and Sienna are then met by an ill man named Dr. Ferris, who claims to have originally brought Langdon to Florence, and the trio decipher from the riddle that they must go to Venice. On the way, Dr. Ferris is shown contacting the provost , and the story heavily implies that Ferris is complicit in Zobrist’s plot, having once been lovers with him. In Venice, Sienna reveals Ferris’s treachery just before Langdon discovers that Zobrist’s plague is in Istanbul. After making this discovery, however, Langdon is captured by Brüder and his soldiers, though Sienna escapes.

Langdon is brought aboard The Mendacium , where the true plot is revealed: Langdon had been brought to Florence by Dr. Elizabeth Sinskey , the head of the World Health Organization and an adversary of Zobrist, to decipher Zobrist’s Dante-related clues so Sinskey and Brüder could contain his plague. Instead, Langdon was intercepted by the provost and The Consortium, who had been hired by Zobrist to hide his work from Sinskey. The provost, ignorant of Zobrist’s plan, attempted to locate Zobrist’s work themselves by drugging Langdon and convincing him that Brüder was trying to kill him, thus motivating him to find Zobrist’s virus—a plot that, to Langdon’s horror, Sienna helped execute. It is revealed that Sienna, not Dr. Ferris, was Zobrist’s lover and the inspiration for his plague, which he named Inferno.

Fearful that Sienna intends to release the plague on her own, Langdon joins Sinskey, Brüder, and the provost (who allies with the others following the discovery of Zobrist’s plot) in traveling to Istanbul, hoping to find Inferno before Sienna. They track Inferno to Istanbul’s ancient cistern, but they are too late, and the virus is released. When Langdon discovers that Sienna is also present in the cistern, he chases her across the city. She almost escapes but turns back when she realizes she has nowhere else to go. Remorseful, Sienna confesses that the Inferno virus will not kill billions but instead will randomly render one-third of the world’s population infertile. And since the virus embeds in the germline, it will also render one-third of unborn humans infertile as well. As a result, the human population will decrease over time, thus avoiding what Zobrist saw as an inevitable environmental collapse. Sienna, fearful of what the governments of the world might do with Zobrist’s technology, had not intended to release Inferno but to hide it.

After the crisis abates and it becomes clear that Zobrist’s weapon was not a world-killing plague, Dr. Sinskey announces there will be a summit of global health leaders in Geneva to address how and if the world should reverse the effects of Inferno and invites Sienna to join her. After Sienna and Langdon part ways, Langdon returns to Florence to attend Ignazio Busoni’s funeral and returns Dante Alighieri’s death mask to the Palazzo Vecchio.

Explore Mendacium, a dark, mysterious world infected with depression, and uncover the truth and the fate of a sightless young boy, Caecus.

• In order to solve the mystery of the game, it is necessary to read all of the dialogues carefully.
• When the player is killed and sent back to the main menu, it does not count as an actual ending, since there are only two legit ones and you will get an end credit scene if you manage to get one of them.
• If you are really stuck, just remember the theme of the jam.

This game is a submission for CGJ 2019 for the theme "Game is a Liar". Everything, including Art, Code, Music, Sounds and Animations were created during 7 days period of the game jam.

74m Amels 242 M&EM Delivered to Owner

Leading Dutch shipyard Amels has announced that the 74m superyacht ‘M&EM’ from the successful Amels 242 series has been delivered to her new owner.

Stemming from the popular Amels 242 design, this brand-new 74m delivery marks yet another triumph for the Amels Limited Editions, as the seventh yacht from the bespoke 242 series. 

Featuring an unmistakable exterior design from yachting design legend Tim Heywood, M&EM, previously known as Amels 24207, is a stunning addition to the Amels fleet. Adorned with a unique glossy blue hull, white superstructure and sweeping large glass windows, the new 74m is a truly stand-out vessel, first revealed to the world at her launch earlier this year. 

Damen Yachting completed the naval architecture for M&EM, and, like all Amels Limited Editions, has ensured that the new yacht has been designed to deliver ‘ocean-going performance’, alongside an, ‘excellent onboard experience’. M&EM features several of the latest Amels innovations and exceptional features including a dedicated owners deck with a forward-facing stateroom providing incredible views during cruising. A large swimming pool at the aft deck, a foredeck jacuzzi and an increased capacity helicopter deck are also fitted onboard. M&EM is also equipped with the latest IMO Tier III clean emissions power and propulsion package. 

Inside, M&EM boasts custom interiors by renowned British interior design studio Winch Design ; completing the impressive design team. The owner was represented throughout the build process by Imperial. 

A gross tonnage of 1,790, allows this Amels 242 to accommodate 12 guests in six luxurious cabins, alongside 19 crew plus Captain. 

The Project Manager for M&EM, Peter Dijkwel, commented on her delivery: ‘We are delighted to be handing over this beautiful yacht to her Owners. A milestone which has been made possible thanks to the excellent collaboration between all parties involved and we look forward to following her next chapter.’

As the seventh Amels 242 begins her maiden voyage, we eagerly anticipate more news about the construction of the eighth yacht from the same series, who is expected to be delivered in Spring 2024.

Gone But Not Forgotten- The Boat Brands We Loved That Are No More (Part 9)

The motoryacht movement with maxum, meridian, carver & marquis.

In my over forty years in the pleasure boat industry, there have been literally thousands of boat companies and brand names of boats in North America.

Some of these were and are strictly regional brands not known or recognized in the rest of the continent but many were national and even international brands known to most of us diehard boaters.

It is those well known and recognized brands that are no longer with us that I look forward to examining in this series. These brand names may still be corporately held in reserve but are not known to currently be in production.

In 1986, the Boat Group division of Brunswick Corporation , makers of Mercury outboard motors and MerCruiser sterndrive engines, purchased Sea Ray boats. They quickly followed up in the same year with the purchase of Bayliner . Both Sea Ray and Bayliner had been vying back and forth for a few years as to which was the largest pleasure boat manufacturer in the world. Now Brunswick would undoubtedly be number one.

Sea Ray and Bayliner had also been perceived, rightly or wrongly by the boating industry, and more importantly by the boating public, as representing not necessarily the extremes, but relative opposite ends of the pleasure boat market in terms of desirability, price point, and quality. It was akin in those days to the positioning of General Motors and the Buick vs. Chevrolet argument.

Based on this market perception, Brunswick thought there may be room for a boat brand positioned between Sea Ray and Bayliner, just as General Motors had Pontiac and Oldsmobile positioned between its other two brands. Just two years after the acquisition of Sea Ray and Bayliner, in 1988 Brunswick created the Maxum brand for exactly that purpose.

Building out of a Bayliner facility in Pipestone, Minnesota, in 1989 Maxum Marine offered eight models from 16-23 feet. Growth as well as market acceptance of Maxum was slow, as many Maxum hulls were the same as Bayliner hulls but with different decks and inner liners. The public was confused. As Maxum offerings grew in size to include mid-cabin express cruisers and eventually full cruisers, production facilities were added in Salisbury, Maryland.

In 1999, ten years after its formation, Maxum was offering 18 models from 18-46 feet. This was a prelude to a 2000 news conference when Maxum introduced its all new “curvy and sexy-looking” 3500 SCR cruiser, the first Maxum to be designed independently from Bayliner with a distinct brand identity and independence.

In that news conference, Dave Heiss, Maxum’s Manager of Advertising and Marketing, said, "Now we can grow each brand's personality independent of the other." Production was extended to include facilities in Valdosta, Georgia and Miami, Oklahoma. Unfortunately, it seems that maybe the 10 years of public perception and confusion between brands had solidified in the marketplace because Maxum did not perform as anticipated. In 2001, the Valdosta facilities were sold and the Miami, Oklahoma facility closed down as the events of 9/11 resulted in a severe downturn in the pleasure boat industry.

Maxum announced a re-invigoration of its lineup in 2002 but it was too little, too late. By 2009, it had cut back its product offerings to 12 models from 18-37 feet. But damage had also been done by the horrendous financial downturn of 2008 and, after a 20-plus year run, Maxum boats were discontinued in 2009.

The downturn in Maxum sales in 2001 was reflected in almost the entire industry, including almost across the board in the Brunswick Boat Group. Bayliner was building over 50 models in five series of boats and its sales were hit hard. It was also building larger and larger boats up to almost 60 feet and not paying enough attention to the smaller boats in its lineup that had always been its winning formula.

2002 was the final year for Bayliner Motoryachts. In 2003, Brunswick launched its Meridian line of yachts out of Bayliner’s old yacht and former headquarters location in Arlington, Washington. Meridian started with the old Bayliner lineup of seven models of sedans, flybridges, and pilothouse motoryachts from 34-58 feet, with the direction and intention of gradually re-tooling the lineup.

This would include not only new and more aggressive designs but also new materials and hardware to bring the Meridian brand closer to Sea Ray and its perception quality. All Meridian models were equipped with Brunswick’s new Docking on Command™ system of utilizing bow and stern thrusters under a single control.

Sales rebounded under the new direction but the financial downturn of 2008 caused more rationalization of Brunswick’s facilities, including the closing of the Arlington plant and all Meridian production moving to Florida. In 2011, it was claimed that Meridian had the best selling sedan and flybridge cruisers in the United States for the past five years.

It was not enough, though, and by 2018 Brunswick Corp. announced the end of not only Meridian Yachts but also the yacht and sport yacht models of Sea Ray. It must be noted here that both Bayliner and Sea Ray continue to this day both as major manufacturers of pleasure boats.

As a post-script, while we are dealing with Bayliner and its many changes in product lines over the years, there are a couple of series (at least) that have come and gone over the years – series that many boaters will remember with fondness.

One series is the Avanti series of more upscale mid-cabin express cruisers and flybridge boats from 29-40 feet from the years 1987 to 1999. The second series is a personal favourite of mine and one that has attracted almost a cult-like following from long-range cruisers. That series is the Pilothouse Motoryacht models 4588, 4788, 5288, and 5788 built in various of those lengths between 1985 and 2002, and of course continued under Meridian in 2003 and until model changes were made.

It is difficult for me to believe that Carver Yachts , one of the most popular and recognizable motor yacht brands found almost everywhere for decades might no longer be with us. It was said to have closed its doors permanently in mid-2021. Its huge production facilities in Pulaski, Wisconsin, which it shared with Marquis Yachts, was almost simultaneously purchased by KCS International, parent company of Cruisers Yachts of nearby Oconto, Wisconsin.

Charlie Carter and George Verhagen put the three first letters of each of their last names together to create the “Carver” name in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1954. Their first designs were mahogany planked runabouts. As sales grew, in 1956 they moved operations to Pulaski, a short distance northwest of Green Bay.

In the 1960’s, Carver recognized the growing consumer demand for “family-sized” overnighters and built roomy boats to satisfy that market. It recognized the growing demand for flybridge models as well. By 1971, Carver was offering seven models from 21-31 feet, all of which were built from wood.

By the mid-70's, Carver introduced fiberglass hulls but still with wooden superstructures. It first introduced its Mariner series at this time, one of the roomiest boats on the market with loads of indoor living space all on one level. It also came with a huge flybridge which had the only helm control station. The Carver 33-Mariner of the 1970’s satisfied both consumer boating needs and was a huge sales success. The Mariner series expanded over the years while keeping its original successful design philosophies.

By the 1980’s, Carver had grown worldwide into a major builder of what became referred to as motor yachts. The 32 and 36 flybridge aft cabin motor yachts became synonymous with Carver as boat owners enjoyed the privacy of an aft cabin stateroom with a private head compartment, while guests slept at the extreme other end of the boat in the bow.

In 1985, Carver was purchased by Miramar Marine Corp which soon added another production facility in North Carolina. Carver then started building Miramar’s new acquisition of Californian Yachts and offering them through its vast worldwide dealer network. In 1990, Carver offered a substantial lineup of 30 models from 22-55 feet including six Californian models. Sales topped out over $200 million.

The federal luxury tax of early 1991 along with an economic turndown almost crippled Carver. Buyout specialist Irwin Jacobs worked his magic and by the end of the year had assembled Miramar along with Carver into his Genmar Industries. A few years later, this became Genmar Holdings, Inc. which evolved into one of the world’s largest pleasure boat manufacturers.

In 1992, Genmar purchased Trojan Yachts of Pennsylvania and moved the tooling and molds to Pulaski to build the yachts there. Trojan’s lineup ranged from 30-46 foot express and sport cruisers, but unfortunately it did not last long. California Yachts was sold. Meanwhile, Carver started to rebound under new management and with the repeal of the luxury tax a year later.

The late-90's saw consumer demand wanting luxurious interior accommodations and Carver was happy to oblige. By the end of the 1990’s it introduced its ultra-luxurious 53 and 57 Voyager Pilothouse motor yachts with their ”skylounge” helm station with powered Captain’s chair, huge flybridge, solid finished cherrywood cabinetry throughout, leatherette furniture, and plush carpeting.

Following this success, Carver saw the need for even more luxury and better sales in European and offshore markets. In 2002, it started working with the Italian design team of Nuvolari & Lenard. This resulted in Carver building new upscale European designed Nuvari yachts from a new facility in Fano, Italy. With this background, in 2004, Carver created Marquis Yachts as an even more upscale line with European influences built in the Pulaski facilities. Originally, Marquis offered two models, the 59-foot and 65-foot motor yachts, and their success led to a full line from 42-72 feet.

In the same year, 2004, the Genmar Holdings, Inc. portfolio included 18 boat brands, but the financial crisis of 2008 had a devastating cumulative effect resulting in its bankruptcy. At the subsequent auction in 2010, Platinum Equity Group purchased the bulk of the brands, while Irwin Jacobs and a partner purchased Carver and Marquis Yachts. Shortly thereafter they added the Larson group to form the Marquis-Larson Boat Group consisting of six brands: Marquis, Carver, Larson, Larson FX, Larson Escape, and Striper.

After all of these changes, Carver tried to revitalize itself with some striking new designs which didn’t catch on with the market. In 2019, Larson, FX, Escape, and Striper were sold to the Polaris Group. For 2021, Carver was offering only six models from 34-52 feet, none of which had any resemblance to the Carver models which had excelled in the marketplace in the past.

Carver and Marquis were closed in summer of 2021. The extensive Pulaski manufacturing facilities were purchased by KCS International of nearby Oconto, the parent company of Cruisers Yachts, builders of 16 models from 33-60 feet. This company was then almost immediately purchased by MarineMax , the largest recreational boat dealership company with a hundred locations worldwide. Cruisers Yachts continues to excel.

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

There also appears to be a helipad perfect for whenever the Facebook co-founder wants to travel to his vessel by air.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
