The Ultimate Guide to Passerelles (Gangways): Choosing the Right Fit for Your Yacht

The Ultimate Guide to Passerelles (Gangways): Choosing the Right Fit for Your Yacht

Are you in the midst of picking a passerelle for your yacht but overwhelmed by the options? Our “The Ultimate Guide to Passerelles Gangways: Choosing the Right Fit for Your Yacht” is here to help you choose the right fit. Discover the blend of safety, style, and convenience you should consider for an impeccable marine welcome. Turn the functional into the exceptional on your yacht with wisdom from our focused insights.

Key Takeaways

Passerelles and gangways are essential for safety and add aesthetic value to yachts, with features like non-slip surfaces, self-levelling steps, and integrated lighting enhancing both functionality and design.

A variety of passerelle types exist to accommodate different yachts and preferences, including fixed, telescopic, and folding gangways, each offering a balance of elegance, convenience, and space efficiency.

Choosing the right passerelle requires consideration of vessel specifications, load capacity, and compatibility with docks, as well as the potential for integrating additional equipment for enhanced functionality.

Understanding the Role of Passerelles and Gangways

Just like the wind-catching sails, passerelles and gangways shape the yachting experience by providing a secure and elegant pathway for boarding and alighting. Serving as more than mere pathways, they are the thresholds to adventures on boats, the front steps to floating mansions, and the link between the solidity of the dock and the fluidity of the ocean.

Safety First: Ensuring Secure Passage

When moving from shore to ship, safety is of utmost importance, and passerelles play a key role in avoiding any risky jumps or steps that could endanger passenger wellbeing. Equipped with non-slip surfaces and handrails, passerelles guarantee a stable and secure passage for everyone, from energetic toddlers to the dignified elderly, underlining the adage that a safe voyage begins with the first step.

Style Meets Functionality: Aesthetic Considerations

Beyond being a practical requirement, a passerelle also symbolises quality and style, enhancing the yacht’s aesthetic and offering guests a luxurious welcome. Crafted from materials like teak and carbon fibre, these access points boast self-levelling steps and integrated lighting, ensuring they look as splendid as they are secure.

The Convenience Factor: Easy Storage and Deployment

In the sophisticated world of yachting, convenience reigns supreme. This is exemplified by telescopic gangways, which:

Save deck space by elegantly retracting when not needed

Seamlessly adapt to various docking situations

Ensure that no matter where your travels take you, your gangway is ready to serve.

Deciphering Different Types of Passerelles and Gangways

Exploring the realm of passerelles and gangways uncovers a variety of designs, each customised to suit unique yacht specifications and owner tastes. From the straightforward charm of fixed gangways to the intricate mechanisms of folding models, these essential marine accessories ensure a safe and stylish passage to and from your vessel.

Fixed Gangways: The Simple Solution

Fixed gangways offer an elegant yet simple solution for those who prefer this combination. These sturdy gangways, often crafted from wood or lightweight aluminum, provide a stable and unassuming plank between boat and dock, ideal for smaller vessels or simpler docking requirements.

Telescopic Triumphs: Extendable Elegance

Telescopic gangways are the go-to option when flexibility is paramount. Their extendable nature offers a graceful solution for yachts requiring adaptable lengths to suit various docking scenarios, proving that elegance need not be compromised for the sake of convenience.

Folding and Stowing: Space-Saving Designs

Folding gangways provide an innovative solution to the challenge of limited deck space. These passerelles boast a design that maximises stowage efficiency, allowing for a substantial extension from a compact form. It’s the maritime equivalent of a magician’s hat, providing a robust and lengthy access point that disappears when not in use.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Your Passerelle

Choosing the ideal passerelle involves balancing aesthetics and utility, taking into account the yacht’s specifications, the weight it needs to support, and the integration of any extra equipment. It’s a decision that blends the practical with the personal, ensuring your passerelle not only meets your needs but reflects your style.

Vessel Specifications and Dock Compatibility

The passerelle should seamlessly extend from the stern, complementing the yacht’s dimensions and design. It should also adapt to the varying faces of docks and marinas, providing stable engagement whether you’re moored at a modern pontoon or a charming quay.

Weight and Load Requirements

A passerelle’s strength lies in its capacity to unfailingly support the movement of guests, crew, and cargo. Choosing one with the right weight capacity ensures that your gateway to the sea remains unyielding, with materials like carbon fiber offering the perfect blend of lightness and durability.

Additional Equipment Integration

A versatile, well-equipped passerelle can accommodate additions like wheels for easy movement and shock cords for added stability. For those who demand the utmost in convenience and functionality, advanced control systems and customised accessories further refine the boarding experience.

The Installation Process: What You Need to Know

Installing your chosen passerelle requires the same level of careful planning as the selection process. It’s a task that may call for professional expertise, particularly with hydraulic systems, and should always be approached with an eye for detail and a commitment to precision.

Self-Installation vs. Professional Help

Despite the appeal of a DIY approach, the complexity of some passerelle systems, including those with a lower platform, necessitates professional installation. This is not just a matter of convenience but of safety, as improper handling of heavy equipment can lead to injury or damage to your vessel.

Mounting and Positioning for Optimal Access

The precise positioning of your passerelle is key to guarantee unhindered access to your yacht. Installation involves:

careful alignment

the right choice of mounting points to accommodate tidal shifts and dock variations

ensuring a stable and level gateway for all who board.

Maintaining Your Passerelle for Longevity

Ownership of a passerelle entails the responsibility of maintenance, ensuring its long-lasting beauty and functionality. Regular inspections, cleaning, and servicing will keep your passerelle as reliable as the day it was installed, ready to welcome you and your guests for each new journey.

Routine Checks and Upkeep

As with any important part of your yacht, the passerelle needs regular attention and care. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Perform routine checks for signs of wear

Clean the passerelle regularly to keep it in good condition

Lubricate moving parts to ensure smooth operation

Keep the passage to your yacht impeccable

By following these tips, you can ensure that every deployment of the passerelle is as smooth as the last.

Seasonal Maintenance Tips

Different seasons impose varying demands on your passerelle. As the yachting season approaches, a thorough cleaning and lubrication prepare it for frequent use, while protective measures before winter safeguard against the elements.

Occasional cleaning with a neutral detergent maintains the passerelle’s luster and longevity.

Accessorising Your Passerelle

Equipping your passerelle with accessories and other equipment that boost both its functionality and appeal can turn it from a simple boarding point into a stand-out feature of your yacht. Some accessories to consider include:

LED lighting for practicality and visibility

Custom nameplates for a personal touch

Non-slip mats for safety

Handrails for added support

Storage compartments for convenience

These accessories add layers of functionality and personality to your passerelle.

Enhancing Visibility and Safety with Lighting

LED lighting, which can be integrated into your passerelle, elegantly enhances safety by ensuring visibility at night. These lights not only guide your way but also serve as a beacon of safety, ensuring that the path to your yacht is always clear and inviting, even in the darkest of nights.

Passerelle customisation

Customisation Options for Personal Touch

By adding personal touches, you can make the passerelle an embodiment of your yacht’s unique character. Options for customisation are vast, ranging from a palette of colours to bespoke nameplates and logos, ensuring that your passerelle is as unique as your yachting lifestyle.

Comparing Top Passerelle Brands and Prices

Finding the perfect passerelle in the market can be as daunting as plotting a path through unknown waters. Brands like Besenzoni stand out with a reputation for quality and variety, offering options from the manual to the hydraulic to suit different needs and budgets.

In the UK, Timage’s selection showcases Besenzoni’s strong market presence, providing a spectrum of choices for discerning yacht owners.

From the sturdy simplicity of fixed designs to the adaptable elegance of telescopic models, the right passerelle integrates seamlessly with your yacht, enhancing safety, style, and convenience. Remember, the best passerelle is one that reflects the unique identity of your vessel and your personal touch, ensuring a grand entrance and exit every time you set sail.

To reach the quay, our modular equipment passerelles have a maximum reach of up to 10 metres . When a longer passerelle is required, Cramm can offer you a customised passerelle in any desired length.

Based on the available space, Cramm offers three different types of passerelles: non-telescopic, single telescopic and double telescopic, with non-telescopic requiring the most build-in space and the double telescopic the least.

Extendable Lorry

When space is extremely limited on the yacht, the extendable lorry offers the ideal space-saving solution. The double telescopic lorry system can store two lorries on top of each other, reducing the required length enormously compared to a standard lorry; the height of the box is doubled to just only 650 mm. This space saving enables other equipment and systems to take maximum advantage of the available space in the yacht.

Our series of passerelles are of lightweight construction, manufactured from aluminium and the very latest materials. This results in a high torque stiffness, minimal bending and a weight reduction of 25% to 35% compared to the previous series.

Due to the sturdy design, the deflection of the passerelle free off the quay with a maximum load of 250 kg is limited to a minimum and one of the best you can get in the market. At Cramm we keep improving our products to stay up to date with the latest trends, quality standards and technologies. Contact one of our employees to learn more about our products

Super Yacht Quality

To increase the service life of our products and give the yacht equipment a quality finish, all products are faired and painted using the highest yacht-quality paint available. Furthermore, to guarantee a high-quality result, at Cramm we use the best brands for all teak and hydraulic components on our boarding equipment. All Cramm passerelles meet uncompromised quality and design standards (ISO, LY3).

Our experienced team that delivers outstanding craftmanship and the use of the very best materials, enables Cramm to deliver extended warranties on equipment to cover the period from delivery at the shipyard to the transfer of the vessel to the owner and beyond.

Rotating or Fixed

Cramm offers two standard systems for using the passerelle in every docking position. Our fixed passerelle system is ideal for docking with the stern to quay, with no rotation needed within the passerelle to board the yacht.

Using the rotating slewing frame, the passerelle can be rotated towards the quay at an angle of 90° on both sides. Furthermore, when docking and an obstacle is in the way, the slewing frame can easily reposition the passerelle to the sides without the need to re-dock the yacht.

Motor Yacht Idynasty

Working with Cramm over the last 3 years has been a pleasure. Cramm equipment is built to a very high standard, and unlike some bespoke equipment found on yachts, has proven to be very reliable. The installation of Cramm equipment has been carried out by experienced technicians with maintenance in mind for access to serviceable components.

Cramms service engineers are extremely knowledgeable of their systems, routine service visits incorporate thorougher inspections of equipment, often detecting potential problems before they occur. Cramms service engineers are always very careful with keeping clean and not making a mess. Working areas are always very well protected before work commences, and left as found. I would definitely recommend Cramm for hydraulic equipment as one of the leading company’s in the industry.

Martin Thomas

Royal huisman bv.

For me it is a big advantage that our companies are relatively close to each other. This makes the verbal communication much more efficient. Short lines often work better. So also the follow up of appointments and agreements work well is my experience. What I also notice about Cramm is that in principle everything is negotiable in a good way, as well the somehow bigger challenges. Cramm is a beautiful Dutch company to work together with.

Pieter Smit

Motor yacht castellina.

I would like to take the time to thank you for the recent visit from a Cramm engineer. It was great to get him back onboard after 16 years to see how the system is now functioning. We found him to be extremely helpful and carried out the assessment with great care and was very thorough.

With the system still functioning well after 16 years of hard service we are certainly going to stick with you, for our up and coming major refit next year, you certainly have our trust! With your revolutionary designs, great service, great build quality and dedicated professional engineers, I would be happy to recommend your services to anyone looking for a first class service.

Motor Yacht Blade

Over the past years Cramm has done several projects on board M/Y BLADE. No matter how big or small, each project was completed to a high standard. Cramm’s service has always been transparent, friendly, efficient and neat. Their knowledgeable engineers are always willing to go the extra mile and their aftercare never disappoints. All in all we’re extremely happy with the service Cramm has provided us with over the years and we’ll continue to use them.

Stripes On Yachts: What Do They Mean?

Whether you are new to the yachting industry or an experienced professional, we’ve all asked ourselves the same question at least once in our career, “what do those stripes mean?” This article breaks down the meanings behind these cryptic stripes.

passerelle watch yacht

What do Yacht Stripes Mean on Epaulettes?

The epaulettes worn on the shoulders of superyacht crew are a legacy of 17th-century military dress in France —when they were used both as a decorative sign of status and a handy way of stopping your sword belt from slipping off your shoulder.

Epaulettes (also epaulets) were adopted by most world navies by the 18th century as a formal insignia of rank and then made their way into the merchant and leisure cruising industries.

The word ‘epaulettes’ comes from the French ‘épaule’, meaning shoulder, and are black with stripes in either gold or silver braid, with a symbol to designate department.

Why and When do Yacht Crew Wear Them?

Yacht crew wear epaulettes in their formal dress as a way of signifying their rank and department, as well as adding a certain status to an occasion.

Epaulettes are usually worn while welcoming guests onto the yacht at arrival and on evening service and passerelle watch, but rarely during daytime activities. These small bits of material add formality and are used as a sign of respect to the guests. You will also often wear epaulettes during boat shows or, less commonly, when welcoming officials or marine pilots on board.

Guests can use the epaulettes to know the rank and department of the crew member they are talking to (even if few guests probably know what they all mean!) Knowing the epaulette system is also helpful for crew to identify another’s rank and department at a glance. In contrast, the epaulettes act as a valuable code for the wider industry — for instance, for port officials to recognise a captain upon arrival.

Not all superyachts use epaulettes in their uniform, as they are in no way a legal requirement (as they are in the Navy). But most do — even if just for that first welcome of the boss from the airport.

The Epaulette ‘Ranking’ System The stripes run from 4 to 1 in descending order of rank. Unlike in the cruise ship industry, there are no half-stripes.

Second Chef2Knife & ForkSilver

Third Engineer1PropellorGold
Third Chef1Knife & ForkSilver
Stewardess, 4th, etc1Crescent MoonSilver

You might have noticed that the different colours of the stripes are significant: The gold braid is reserved for deck and engineering roles, while the silver is for interior roles.

Symbols

  • The symbols of anchors and propellers for deck and engineering roles are (hopefully!) self-explanatory.
  • The stew’s crescent moon is a throwback to the 1800s when Napoleon introduced crescent-shaped bread to feed his army.
  • The quills on a purser’s epaulettes refer to their administrative role.

How to Wear Epaulettes Like You Know What You’re Doing

Now that you know what an epaulette is and what each variation means, it’s your job to a) not lose them and b) wear them the right way up. You might wonder how you could lose an epaulette in a closed environment like a yacht, but trust us, those tiny bits of material sprout legs when you’re not looking.

We strongly suggest that you make a first-day-and-forever habit of always taking your epaulettes off and putting them on the same shelf in the bathroom. And once you’ve found them, always take a quick look to see that you haven’t put them on upside down.

Slipping on your epaulettes for the first time is a rite of passage for any new crew member. Relish the moment. Take a look in the mirror. Look sharp, don’t you?

Superyachts Expert Shares Key Yachting Etiquette Tips

Superyachts Expert Shares Key Yachting Etiquette Tips

Being immersed into the deep luxury that comes with boarding a superyacht can feel like a fantasy to all but the most wealthy.

If like us, you’re holding out for an invite onto one of the world’s top-end ocean liners, the experts at luxury yacht brokerage firm  SuperYachtsMonaco  have put together a set of yachting etiquette tips for when the day comes.

Wondering what you might need to know before you hop on board a superyacht? Step right this way.

Chris Craven, a Broker at  SuperYachtsMonaco  comments on some of the most important etiquette rules when it comes to visiting or chartering a yacht, and some may surprise you:

What are the rules around smoking or vaping on a yacht?

“In principle smoking and vaping is never allowed in the interior of the yacht and guests are generally requested to smoke outside on the decks. If you do smoke, then ensure the doors are closed to the interior.”

The no shoe rule applies, and heels are an absolute no go!

“Almost all yachts have a NO SHOES policy. During events where carpets and protection are laid to protect the teak and interior carpets, shoes are sometimes approved, but heels and teak are not the best of friends, so guests are strongly guided away from such footwear.”

Can a pet come on board with you?

“Yes, but you should always check the owner’s policy on pets. There are plenty of owners that bring their own dogs onboard but for charters, the usual process is to ask for permission. You must detail the breed and weight of your dog for example, and more often than not, be prepared to pay a refundable security deposit of anything from 20,000-50,000 euros.

“Crew are not expected to walk dogs, but they are often keen to get off the yacht for a stroll, so they might very well offer, but in most cases the owner of the dog takes them ashore.”

Be prepared to tip big

“Tips and their size is a complicated topic, as it varies so much based on personal preference. The general rule within the yachting community is to provide a tip of 10% of the charter fee (not the total cost including VAT and APA) to the crew. The tip can come from the excess APA left at the end of the charter or is often sent directly to the yacht crew by wire transfer the week following the charter if the client wishes to leave more than what remains in the APA. Cash is seen far less now and so these two methods are the general norm.”

Guests are expected to take safety protocols very seriously

“Surrounded by stunning interiors or seated on the aft deck of the yacht, at a calm anchorage with a glass of champagne in your hand, one can easily underestimate the importance of the safety brief on ‘Hour One’ of the charter at embarkation. However, when things go wrong at sea, they generally go wrong very quickly and with very serious consequences, normally at night for some reason! Whilst the general feel onboard a yacht is that the crew are there to look after you, and they certainly always make you feel special, they are principally there for your safety. The safety training provided and the strict guidelines followed by the flag state under which you are sailing, mean that you have exceptionally competent and well-trained crew there to guide you to safety, and to respect this is paramount of any yacht charterer. Despite how young and inexperienced they might appear to be in some cases, they know their way around the yacht in all circumstances and you must take what they say when it comes to safety seriously.

“Guests love to jump off yachts from different levels, or hop in for a swim off the back of the yacht. Letting a crew member know about your activity is vital, so they will radio the whole crew to let them know that guests are in the water.

“Guests often think that as the yacht comes with toys, you can use them all, but be aware that licences are required for jet skis and some other toys, so ask well in advance. Training can either be arranged onboard by the crew, or through a short course pre-charter to allow you full access to everything onboard ( apart from the tenders).”

Are there any rules on bringing uninvited guests?

“Generally yacht captains are very flexible with who comes onto the yacht as long as they have prior permission from their owner, the charterer, or there is a scheduled meeting.  All yachts have their limitation of how many passengers they can have at sea, so as long as this is respected, all is well. Superyachts attract all sorts of attention and so dockside security, passerelle watch and other such lines of ‘defense’ are all taken very seriously. Tight communication with the captain and/or chief stewardess as to any new guests is very important.”

Are there any other general interior rules that should be followed?

“The bottom line is to have basic respect for someone else's property. Walking through the yacht with wet swimming trunks, bringing red wine into the salon where there is a white carpet, children ‘handling’ chocolate, are all no-nos! The list goes on, but it all comes back to respect and understanding. I know of yachts that indeed do not allow red wine inside the main salon, do not allow clients to sit on certain sofas with suncream on, and some where jean studs are frowned upon, due to the amount of varnished wood. As a backup, owners can often request a security deposit to cover accidental damage and charterers can take out liability insurance so all bases can be covered on both sides.”

What type of luggage should you bring on board?

“When chartering a smaller sailing yacht or production boat, foldable/squashable soft luggage is always better for the crew, especially if you have a full yacht of guests as storage is often not very good.”

Freebies, on a yacht?

“If you like the products the owner has offered in the bathrooms or any sun creams that have been supplied on your trip, you can always ask the chief stewardess if you can take some extras with you at the end of the charter. Do not simply presume you can sweep them all up like you might in a hotel. Sometimes, the crew will even give you branded gifts, such as towels to remember the stay, but it is always better to ask first.

“The crew will also provide themed nights when requested at no additional cost, they are used to doing this for adults and children. Although the crew are not trained nannies, with a sensible conversation, some crews are also delighted to entertain children for a ‘movie night’ for example, while parents go for dinner ashore.”

Best sailing watches: 16 options for racing and cruising

Fox Morgan

  • June 9, 2024

Marine Tech Editor Fox Morgan has created a short list of 16 of the best sailing watches on the market. There's a range to suit all budgets and sailing needs, from a basic time waterproof timekeeper to a top of the range smart watch. There something for everyone, from racing to cruising sailors.

best-sailing-watches-2022

The best sailing watches can offer a multitude of functions, from MOB alerts to tidal calculations and large faced race count down timers. And yet still there’s utter simplicity of a waterproof self winding timepiece.

Just as tablets and even smartphones have revolutionised how sailors use multifunction displays and instruments, so the latest smart watch technology has now firmly filtered into sailing. While we’re now familiar with using our watches to give us directions, make calls and send messages, and act as a repeater screen on our wrists ashore, so the latest sailing watches also make navigation, data and comms technology wearable afloat.

You’ll see that Garmin have several entries in our best sailing watches guide and if you’re specifically after a Garmin, we have rounded up the best of those in this guide to the best Garmin watch for yachting sailing and more .

However, the cleverest watch is not always the best watch for sailing. For racing an extremely simple and speedy to operate model may suit better. Price is not always an indicator of functionality either; even some of the least expensive sailing watches, like the Casio we showcase below, can be packed with features.

At the other end of the scale,  luxury horology brands – including Rolex, Panerai, and Omega among others – have long been closely associated with sailing, seeing it as the perfect sport to demonstrate their style, waterproof and ruggedised qualities, and accuracy.

In making our selection of the best sailing watches, we’ve chosen those with features specifically suitable for wearing aboard. That doesn’t mean, however, that they float, so be sure to do the clasp up securely and be wary of pulling off jacket sleeves in a hurry and losing your prized timepiece overboard!

Editor’s top choices at a glance

Garmin quatix 7.

Best smart sailing watch

Specifications: Apple or android smart phone compatible,  Sizes: 47mm / 51mm, Weight 70g, Battery life: up to 16 days with screen on by demand, GPS tracking, waterproof to 10 ATM

Reasons to Buy: Large easy to read face | incredible versatility for an array of lifestyle activity | healthy wellbeing and boat interactivity | customisable to suit individual needs Reasons to Avoid: Battery life not as good as the Quatix 6 if screen is always visible | bright facia can be distracting | touchscreen is pointless without the additional kit it interfaces with

Garmin’s latest sailing smartwatch includes improvements to strengthen integration with onboard electronics.

It’s a touchscreen model that can, for instance, be used to control MFD displays or Fusion audio systems, as well as Garmin autopilots.

You can also pay for things with contactless payments, but you’ll need to use an intermediary app, such as Curve if you are in the UK as British banks haven’t signed up for that function directly yet.

So let’s address the major change for the Quatix 7 over the Quatix 6, and that’s the display. Plenty of folks complained about the darkness or difficulty seeing the Quatix 6 screen, so they’ve addressed that with a much brighter lit up style of screen.  It is very bright even when turned to its dimmest setting. To save the battery from being drained unnecessarily at night, there’s a night time version of the watch screen where you can view it as a digital numeric mono display, on demand, otherwise the screen is completely blank. This brighter clearer display does come at a compromise of battery life or screen saver settings.

The extra screen size in the same outer bezel size though is really very nice. Maps and other tracking options can be easily seen.

High end Sapphire models add a new ultra-clear AMOLED touchscreen.

The watch can output directly to Strava and myfitnesspal along with other apps according to your preference. We like this watch very much indeed and it is currently the best smart sailing watch for all round functionality. Pricey though, but worth it.

Casio Lithium Quartz

Best value sailing watch

Specifications: Type: Digital | Size: 48mm

Reasons to buy: Great value | Highly functional | 2 year warranty Reasons to avoid: Lacking in design | Lacking extensive features of premium alternatives

There’s no question that when it comes to affordable innovation, Casio is right up there.

Despite being one of the lowest-priced watches in our selection, the Casio Tide Watch Orange is a highly functional piece of kit which, in addition to all the usual time, day and auto date functions also features a tide graph and lunar phase display.

More conventional sailing watch functions include a timer, stopwatch and LED might. It is water resistant to 100m/10 bars and has a 2 year warranty, all packed into a 48mm diameter, 13 mm thick case.

best-sailing-watches-ronstan-clearstart-race-timer

Ronstan Clear Start Race Timer

Best Race Sailing watch

Specifications: Type: Digital | Size 65mm

Reasons to buy: Robust design with secure strap | Extra-large | easy to press silicon buttons | Great display Reasons to avoid: Some consumers report issues with clasp/strap

With wrist, hull, mast or boom mount options, the Swiss-made Ronstan ClearStart Race Timer is aimed squarely at racing sailors.

Made by renowned rigging and hardware company Ronstan, it’s a robust design with a secure elastic strap and substantial ‘bumper’ around the digital display.

The ClearStart Race Timer’s features include extra-large, easy-press silicon buttons, a highlighted start/stop button, oversized 16 mm digits set in a 65mm rotating face and a double line display simultaneously showing the race countdown and time.

In addition, the ClearStart Race Timer offers ‘5-4-1-0’ and Match Racing start sequence programmes, making it a great choice for competitive sailors. Ruggedly constructed and built to last, this sailing watch weighs in at 92 grammes and is water-resistant to 50 metres.

Garmin MARQ Captain

Best premium sailing watch

Specifications: Type: Smart | Size: 46mm

Reasons to buy: Weather and tidal data | MOB and GPS functions | Stream boat data to your wrist Reasons to avoid: Full extent of capabilities is governed by the onboard technology it’s connected to | Premium price

Tested by: MBY Editor, Hugo Andreae

Our top priced pick comes from wearable tech-specialists, Garmin. The MARQ Captain sailing watch comes packed with marine-relevant features.

Functions include weather and tidal data for your home port, a regatta timer to pinpoint starting times, a ‘tack assist’ function to determine whether you’re on lift or a header, a man overboard button and GPS.

The full extent of its capabilities is governed by the onboard technology to which it is connected, but possibilities include streaming boat data direct to your wrist wherever you are on the boat and controlling products from the Garmin-owned Fusion range of audio systems.

Note: We may earn a commission when you buy through links on our site, at no extra cost to you. This doesn’t affect our editorial independence.

Best big screen countdown race sailing watches.

Timex-Optimum-3

Optimum Time Series 3 sailing watch

One of the most popular sailing watches on the market

Specifications: Type: Digital | Size: 65mm

Reasons to buy: Great price | Highly functional | Easy to read Reasons to avoid: It’s really big

The popular ‘big yellow’ Optimum Time Series 3 is a lower-priced, yet highly functional racing watch. And it truly is big – far too large for my wrist at a gigantic 65mm (2.56” in) diameter and 16mm (0.62” in) thick. It’s also available in colours other than yellow – including white, blue and pink.

An advantage for racing is that this watch is easy to read at a distance thanks to its huge 16mm digits. A bracket is supplied to fix it to a mast. It also has a sync button if you miss the start gun, and can then run a repeat sequence or race timer for handicap competitions.

Robust, and water resistant to 5 ATM, with a wide elasticated strap.

best-sailing-watches-optimum-time-series-14

Optimum Time Series 14 Rechargeable sailing watch

Best racing sailing watch

Specifications: Type: Digital | Size: 68mm

Reasons to buy: Rechargeable battery | Packed with features | Suitable for mounting Reasons to avoid: Basic design

Optimum Time’s bold coloured watches are popular among racing sailors from dinghies upwards, and the new rechargeable design makes it more sustainable for anyone who uses theirs frequently.

Featuring a 36mm diameter LCD display mounted within a bright red and black 68mm ABS case, Optimum Time’s Series 14 watch is a substantial device that is equally suited to being mounted on a mast or boom as your wrist, while the digits are large enough to allow crew to see the same timer as the skipper.

Waterproof to 5 ATM (i.e. capable of withstanding a pressure of 5 bar), the sailing watch is packed with useful features and comes complete with a bespoke USB charger clamp for convenient charging.

Timex-Intelligent-sailing-watch

Timex Intelligent Quartz Yacht Racer watch

Best for Analogue race sailing watch fans

Specifications: Type: Analogue | Size 46mm

Reasons to buy: Striking analogue display | Countdown timers Reasons to avoid: Larger than average design | Complex to set up | lacks reset button | Expensive

This is a very striking analogue watch, designed to appeal specifically to racing sailors who don’t want a digital display. It features a racing countdown timers (from 5 mins, 3 mins or 1 minute), then after the start the chronometer automatically starts a race timer for up to one hour.

This is a larger than average design, at 46 mm (1.81” in) diameter and 14mm (0.55” in) thick.

However, this watch is complex to set up, as some functions require three buttons to be pressed in sequence. There is also no ‘reset’ button for anyone who misses their start sequence timer.

Ronstan-ClearStart

Ronstan Clearstart RF4055 sailing watch

Best specialist racing sailing watch

Specifications: Type: Digital | Size: 50mm

Reasons to buy: Multiple start sequence options | Match racing timer | Can sync for early/late start Reasons to avoid: Larger than average design

This sailing watch is another specialist racing design. Race mode features include multiple start sequence options, match racing timer and the ability to sync for an early or late start.

The Clearstart RF4055 is unusual in that it has a fibreglass case, which is available in striking yellow and red as well as the more subtle black. It has a 50mm (2″) diameter face, which is larger than most watches, with a 13mm (0.5″ in) digital display, and the weight is 74gm (2.61oz), though the buttons have a lower profile than some other race watches making it neater to wear on shore.

Optimum-series-12

Optimum Time Series 12 sailing watch

Best audible racing sailing watch

Specifications: Type: Digital | Size: 26mm

Reasons to buy: Audible warning features | Many colour choices Reasons to avoid: No GPS or interconnectivity | Small display is hard to read in hectic moments

Another race timer with countdown time and pre-programmed start and audible warnings. Despite its more smart watch-style appearance, there is no GPS or interconnectivity, but you do get a countdown repeat option, World Sailing 5-4-1-0 start sequence pre-programmed with audible warning signals, and a sync button.

The Optimum Time Series 12 is available in many colours, but has a small 26mm (1.02” in) display, with 10mm (0.34” in) figures, which will make it hard to read in the middle of a hectic race start.

gill-race-timer

Gill Race Watch Timer

Best racing sailing watch for watersports

Specifications: Type: Digital | Size 44mm

Reasons to buy: Water-resistant to 30 metres | Carbon housing | The sleep feature preserves battery life Reasons to avoid: Basic design and functions

This striking red and black Race Watch Timer is a sailing-specific watch developed exclusively for watersports apparel company Gill. It’s water-resistant to an impressive 30 metres, with the timepiece unit encased in a reinforced carbon ABS plastic housing with a stainless steel back.

As well as telling the time, the sailing watch’s functions include a countdown with synchro, day, date and alarm. There’s a keyboard lock feature to you don’t accidentally change the settings and an electro-luminescent backlight allows the wearer to check the data day or night.

A neat sleep feature preserves and prolongs battery life in a ruggedly constructed unit designed for durability and years of trouble-free service.

limit-proxr-countdown

Limit ProXR Countdown sailing watch

Best value racing sailing watch

Reasons to buy: Large, clear, easy to read display | Multiple design options | Dual time, stopwatch, countdown and pacer functions Reasons to avoid: Lacks features/functions of more premium competitors | Chunky

Limit has been producing watches for more than 110 years and specialises in offering a wide variety of styles at great value prices.

For a budget-friendly sailing watch option, the Limit ProXR Countdown comes with a large, clear and easily readable display and is backed by a two-year guarantee.

It also has a dual time display and stopwatch, countdown and pacer functionality. No fewer than five alarms can be set and there’s a night time illumination facility.

Available in a choice of orange/black or blue/black, the looks of this chunky 50 mm case diameter sailing watch certainly belie its low price tag.

Best Smart sailing watches

passerelle watch yacht

Garmin Instinct 2S Solar

Specifications: Type: Smart | Size: 40mm / 45mm / 50mm, weight 53g(2oz)

Reasons to buy: GPS positioning on charts | barometric pressure and compass | Smartphone connectivity | An incredible amount of styles and colours | A single charge lasts 14 days Reasons to avoid: Premium price without a premium design

The Instinct 2, launched in February 2022 is Garmin’s all-round watch, which they call their outdoors watch. Features that are particularly relevant to sailors include GPS positioning on charts; barometric pressure and a compass.

It has smartphone connectivity, receives emails and texts, and can control music via a phone. This watch also has an inbuilt thermometer and heart rate monitor.

The Garmin Instinct is available in no fewer than 20 different styles and colours. It’s actual diameter is 47mm (1 13/16” in) but the viewable face is 32mm (1 1/4”). The Instinct is 16mm (5/8” in) thick and weighs 53g (2 oz).

For racing sailors, it also has multiple start sequence options. We have an indepth review from long term testing of this watch coming soon.

The Garmin Instinct watch is a good alternative for anyone seeking a more moderately priced alternative to the Quatix 6.

passerelle watch yacht

Garmin Quatix 6 Multisport Marine Smartwatch

Specifications: Apple or android smart phone compatible,  Sizes: 47mm / 51mm, weight 82g, Battery life: up to 16 days with screen always visible, GPS tracking, waterproof to 10 ATM

Reasons to buy: Suits a multitude of water activity | Highly customisable | An incredible amount of data available on your wrist | A single charge lasts 14 days Reasons to avoid: High level of functionality is not for the technologically phobic

This watch I tested comprehensively for several weeks/months – it is a very smart design, with functions for every type of pastime on the water and off it.

Garmin is well known for superior boating instruments and they have now managed to squeeze all the data of a ten-inch chartplotter into a 1.3” inch round sailing watch. Bluetooth functionality means you can connect it to a Garmin chartplotter using the free Garmin Connect app, and to other makes of plotter using the Garmin transceiver (a $150 extra).

This allows all the features of a chartplotter to be displayed on the watch, including charts and even autopilot control to allow you to change heading or follow a GPS route – provided it is also connected through the chartplotter.

The Quatix 6 also offers more typical smartwatch functions including the ability to receive email and texts, can be used to control music on board, and monitors the user’s heart-rate.

It’s simple to switch between ‘boat display’ and ‘stylish watch’ modes, as hundreds of different watch faces that can be downloaded to customise it to the wearer’s preference, including an antique style face and even a copy of Big Ben. The Quatix 6 can also be switched between analogue and digital.

It’s overall diameter is 51mm (2” in) with a 36mm (1 5/8” in) viewable face, and it is 17mm (11/16”) thick. The Quatix 6’s weight is 83g (3oz) with the plastic strap or 156g (5.5oz) with the stainless band, which is quite a bit heavier than a conventional watch.

Best Analogue Sailing watches

best-sailing-watches-YAW276.new_gear.original_diver_the_ocean_race

Ulysse-Nardin The Ocean Race Diver

Specifications: Type: Analogue | Size: 44mm

Reasons to buy: manufacturer with a strong history in watch making | ‘green’ credentials | classy and collectible Reasons to avoid: Lacks features/functions of more sailing-specific watches | you’ll need deep pockets

Swiss watchmaker Ulysse Nardin sourced discarded fishing nets to upcycle into the base material for this watch, highlighting the 640,000 tonnes of nets that are discarded at sea each year.

In addition, 95% of components for the mechanical movement are sourced from within 30km of Ulysse Nardin’s site.

Buy The Ocean Race Diver now on ulysse-nardin.com

Spinnaker Haas Automatic

Specifications: Type: Analogue | Size: 43mm

Reasons to buy: S mart styling | easy to read day and night | electronics free | self winding Reasons to avoid: Due to self winding mechanism the watch is not as slim as a quartz movement watch which might mean that cuffs on shirts and foulies are tight.

Tested by: Professional TopSail Schooner Skipper, Phil Pryor

The joy of a traditional analogue watch is right here in this stylish all metal timepiece from Spinnaker.

Spinnaker Watches collaborated with the Marine Conservation Society to produce this limited edition model that’s a tribute to marine biologist and pioneering diver Hans Hass.

If you want to ditch the computers and keep it simple then this is definitely worth a look.

It feels reassuringly sturdy with it’s all metal band and easy to read rating bezel.

It’s waterproof to 300m and requires no batteries as this watch self winds from the motion of your hand through every day movement.

The winder unscrews to allow time, day and date adjustment and that my friends is all there is to this gorgeous watch. At least as far as the wearer is concerned. Behind that metal back is the smooth Japanese workings of a self winding watch. When it arrived in the box the watch was still and inactive. But the moment I removed it from the box it started to self wind. With just a small amount of movement, the second hand was moving.

For sailors who want to a sleek non electric time piece and for those divers who like to go under the water as well as on it.

I love this safety yellow colourway as it really stands out and is easy to read. This might not be to everyone’s taste though which is fine because the Spinnaker Hass comes in 9 different colourways.

FAQ: What makes the best sailing watch?

The ability to read the time, countdown or data in a hurry or at an angle is key, so look out for digital readouts with large numbers – some sailing watches have the ability to switch from digital to analogue readouts – and screens that can be viewed in different qualities of daylight. Backlit functions are essential for anyone heading offshore, whether racing or cruising.

A well-fitting wristband or strap with a secure clasp is vital to keep the watch on your arm. Most sailing watches have soft rubber or synthetic wristbands, which are more durable in a marine environment, and safer than steel. Rubber straps are also lighter and easier to adjust.

If you plan to use your watch for race start timing, look for programmable start sequence options, a sync button, countdowns that switch to seconds in the final stages. A loud, clear alarm or ‘beep’ function that tells you time to the gun is particularly useful, so you can keep watching your course, trim and other boats around you during the final approach to the line rather than having to glance at your wrist.

You can read more about other types of GPS enabled and waterproof fitness trackers and smart watches at YBW.com

passerelle watch yacht

Yacht News YF News Editor

These are pieces of equipment that are thought of as necessary but yet we do not pay them that much attention. Ever thought of the craftmanship that goes in to making a custom passerelle or boarding ladder for a superyacht. It is insane and not to mention expensive. Here is a look at a quick overview of a passerelle being made for a superyacht.

There's a lot of experience in crane building out there. Passerelles are easy compared to their less fancy cousins like fire trucks. Imagine a passerelle doing this: https://e-one-aerials.com/cr-137-ae...-ONE CR 137,horizontally to access the target . My uncle use to drive the back of a hook and ladder in NYC. How far we've come. I've crossed to too many boats on a 2 x 12, and even boat to boat on an extension ladder. Sometimes fancy is really nice.
Check out this one that is on the Wider "Cecilia".
Sure beats the 8" boards I've used to board many boats. Nice setup as long as there's a second set of steps to the swim platform.

Passerelles Superyachts

Nautical Structures Passerelles are truly state of the art. We believe that the entrance sets the tone for the quality and expectation of the entire yacht. Guests that step onto our extended plank will immediately notice the sturdiness, lack of deflection and side-to-side warble that we design into all of our Passerelles.

passerelle watch yacht

Single Telescopic

The single telescoping type passerelle is a tried-and-true Nautical Structures design that enhances the stowed efficiency as well as the deployed range of motion of the plank. Standard hydraulic self-centering, slew-lock, and float functions eliminate the need for finicky limit/proximity switches making this one of the safest and most reliable planks available today.

Double Telescopic

The double telescoping passerelle is a design that increases stowed efficiency of the plank. By doubling the plank sections the ratio of stowed length to deployed length is increased, allowing the passerelle to stow in an even more compact area in the vessel while allowing all of the same standard safety features as the single telescoping version.

See Product Specs: Double Telescopic Passerelle

The Nautical Structures Fold Over Passerelle series is another designed aimed at creating creative solutions for maximizing rigidity, deployed length/size, and safety while minimizing the stowed length and interference with vessel systems and structure. These systems are available in multiple telescoping plank options further increasing available options.

See Product Specs: Fold Over Passerelle

The Nautical Structures Fold Under Passerelle series is one of our most popular systems. This unit features a fold-under design that naturally lends itself to a very stable platform that stows in a much smaller area than similar standard type planks. Again, available with all of our standard hydraulic-based safety/operation features as well as many end-plank options to allow for easy integration between the plank and vessel.

The Nautical Structures Jack-Knife passerelle systems are great for maximizing usable aft-deck space while still having a safe, versatile boarding solution that looks at home on any superyacht.

Crew member on watch duty on Mike Lynch's yacht says he was 'walking on the walls' of the boat as he tried to save passengers

A crew member who was on board the "Bayesian" when it sank off Sicily has spoken about what happened.

British sailor Matthew Griffiths said he alerted the yacht's captain as strong winds hit.

Griffiths and two others are under investigation following the yacht's sinking.

A crew member who was on board British tech tycoon Mike Lynch's "Bayesian" yacht when it sank off the coast of Porticello, Sicily , this month has opened up about the incident.

Matthew Griffiths, a British sailor who was on watch duty on the vessel when it sank, told prosecutors that he had awoken the yacht's captain as "the wind was blowing at 20 knots," Italian news agency ANSA reported .

He said the captain then "ordered to wake everyone else up" before Griffiths "stored away the pillows and plants, closed the windows of the sitting room on the bow and some hatches."

After being thrown from the tilting ship into the water once, Griffiths said he climbed back on board and was "walking on the walls" as he and other crew members attempted to save those they could.

Griffiths, the boat's captain James Cutfield, and the yacht's engineer Tim Parker Eaton are under investigation following the sinking.

Ansa reported that the attorneys of Griffiths and Parker Eaton may request "technical consultancies to clarify the causes of the shipwreck."

The head of the public prosecutor's office of Termini Imerese, Ambrogio Cartosio, previously said he was investigating a "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter .

Experts have said the state-of-the-art yacht should not have sunk so easily .

Seven people died after the Bayesian went down.

Among the victims were Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

Speaking of the survivors, Griffiths said that "Cutfield rescued the little girl and her mother," referring to Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter.

Mike Lynch, the founder of Autonomy, was on the yacht with friends and family celebrating his recent acquittal in a fraud trial.

Stephen Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Autonomy who was also a defendant in the fraud trial, died in a separate incident days before the Bayesian sank.
