Three people died when a sailing boat capsized on Friday and ran aground on a beach in central Portugal, where the coast has seen heavy swells caused by Storm Ciaran, naval authorities said.
The Danish-flagged pleasure boat capsized around a kilometre off one of the beaches at Santa Cruz, in the municipality of Torres Vedras, around 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of Lisbon, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) said in a statement.
The victims, two men and a woman whose ages and nationalities were not immediately known, were found dead on the shore near the wreckage of the boat and were not wearing life jackets, Portuguese Navy spokesman Jose Sousa Luis told AFP.
The yacht had left the port of Peniche, around 30 kilometres north of Santa Cruz, on Friday morning with three people on board, he added.
Portugal was not directly affected by Storm Ciaran, which has claimed a dozen lives elsewhere in Europe.
But the National Meteorological Institute (IPMA) has placed the country's central and northern coastal regions on red alert due to the very rough seas, with waves that can exceed seven metres (23 feet) in height.
A new storm, named Domingos by the Spanish meteorological agency, was due to pass off Portugal on Saturday and Sunday, with waves that could reach up to nine metres high, according to the IPMA.

At least three dead after fishing boat capsizes off coast of Portugal
Seven people remain missing after the boat, named as the Virgem Dolorosa, overturned north of Lisbon.
At least three people have died and seven more are missing after a fishing boat with 17 crew members on board capsized off central Portugalâs Atlantic coast on Wednesday, according to the Portuguese Maritime Authority.
Local media reported that those on the boat were in a state of shock, with two said to have suffered serious injuries.
The boat was located about two kilometres from the shore between SĂŁo Pedro de Moel beach and Vieira beach, north of Lisbon.
The National Maritime Authority said rescuers were alerted to the situation at about 4:30 a.m, with four other fishing vessels nearby immediately beginning the search for survivors.
The emergency response included maritime police and coast guard boats, who rushed to the scene as the horror unfolded. Two boats from the Nazaré and Figueira da Foz Lifeguard Station were activated, as well as an aerial surveillance team from the local Nazaré Maritime Police Command and an aircraft from the Portuguese Air Force.
Rescuers from the âSeaWatchâ Project, the National Maritime Authority, and the Forensic Diving Group of the Maritime Police also went to the site and searches are ongoing.
Cervaens da Costa, the Commander of Figueira da Foz said: "In any case, the proximity to the coast has some significance, there may also have been some natural influence from the sea, but that`s something we'll be investigating."

Portugal, Peniche: Four Dead as Sailboat Capsized by Wave
A Danish yacht with 4 crew members on board has tragically been rolled and sunk in strong winds and high waves off the coast of Portugal.
Published 11 months ago
It has been reported that a Danish yacht with four crew members on board, left the fishing port of Peniche (approx. 100km north of Lisbon) on Sunday 5 November at 07:00, to continue its passage southwards down the coast of Portugal towards Lisbon/Cascais, having arrived in port on 1 November.
Weather conditions over the last week have been very poor and on Sunday a red weather warning was in place, with rough seas and waves from the northwest expected to reach a significant height of seven to eight meters and a maximum height of 14/15 meters.
Despite locals and fishermen warning them not to leave port, the Danish yacht (believed to be a Bavaria 34) chose to venture out in the adverse conditions and continue their passage south.
On leaving the port, filming from shore shows that the yacht remained close inshore. The yacht was heavily reefed and struggling to sail upwind into deeper water in strong south-westerly winds. As the yacht was pushed up onto the beach of Playa de Santa Cruz, south of Peniche, a large breaking wave smothered the yacht completely, and it rolled and disappeared in the surf. The yacht appeared to be no more than half a mile off the beach.
“Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that some debris, allegedly from the vessel, had reached the shore, along with three survivors of the sinking, two men and one woman, all without life jackets and in a state of cardiac arrest. Members of the Torres Vedras Volunteer Fire Department immediately began resuscitation maneuvers,” says the statement from the National Maritime Authority (AMN9).
A fourth, female, crew member was discovered later in the wreckage of the yacht.
The Navy spokesperson later confirmed that the four people, all believed to be foreign nationals, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Circumstances surrounding the boat’s sinking are still being investigated.
The Atlantic coast of Portugal is notorious for good surfing, and in strong onshore winds many ports close as conditions for entry and departure are dangerous. Great care should be taken when transiting/cruising this coast, especially when large waves and winds are forecast. How sad and unfortunate the captain chose to ignore wise advice and go out. What pressing concern they must have had to make it worthwhile to risk everything, we might never know. But nothing should be worth giving up your life except a lovedone’s life.

Sailboat sinks in Portugal, killing 4
Saturday, 04 Nov 2023
LISBON, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Four people died in the sinking of a sailboat off the coast of Portugal on Friday, the Portuguese National Maritime Authority (AMN) reported.
The accident occurred at Formosa Beach, 60 km north of Lisbon. Commander Jose Sousa Luis, spokesperson for the AMN, confirmed that it was a Danish-flagged sailboat and victims are still being identified.
According to him, three bodies, two men and one woman, were washed ashore without life jackets and with cardiac arrest. Resuscitation maneuvers were performed without success.
"When the sailboat was being removed, because the sailboat ran aground and was being removed to serve as evidence for the maritime accident inquiry, another body was discovered inside the sailboat. It is the body of a woman," Luis told Lusa news agency.
Lisbon was under a red alert for sea agitation caused by Storm Ciaran, with waves forecasted to reach seven to eight meters in significant height, and the potential to reach a maximum height of 14/15 meters.
According to the Portuguese National Meteorological Agency (IPMA), a new storm named Domingos is expected to cross Portugal on Saturday and Sunday, with waves reaching up to nine meters.

Brit ‘thought she was going to die’ after tourist boat capsizes in Algarve
Share this with
A British woman feared for her life when a tourist boat she was on suddenly started sinking.
Lila Evangelista was among a group of 36 people, which included four children, on a boat off the Algarve in Portugal on Monday afternoon.
Somehow, water got into the boat and the vessel was sinking âwithin three minutesâ.
Lila was also one of the multiple people whose lifejackets were not activating properly.
The Londoner said: âI thought I was going to die. The water wasnât really high to start with and I was calm but then it started rising very quickly and I began to panic.
âThe coastguards came a little bit late when everyone was already in the big boat that picked up most of those that ended up in the water.â
Her friend Troy French, also from London, said: âI was on the phone to some of my colleagues back in England and then I looked behind me and there was lots of water coming into the boat.
âThe crew started to panic and they started lifting some emergency things up and the water started going into the engine and it was smoking.
âThey got everyone to move to the front of the boat and then the back of the boat was sinking, sinking, sinking to the point where everyone just started jumping into the water.
âA lot of peopleâs lifejackets were failing and werenât activating when people were going into the water. It was a really bad experience and very scary.
âIâm a confident swimmer but I was swallowing water and I was panicking for people whose lifejackets were werenât working properly. Iâm just so glad that everyone made it out so safety.â
The pair said it took around 10 to 15 minutes to get the group, which included five Brits and two Irish nationals, to safety.
The dramatic events took place just before 1.30pm, as the group was returning from the famous Benagil sea cave near Alfanzina Lighthouse, half a mile from the resort of Carvoeiro.
Portugalâs National Maritime Authority said: âMembers of the Portimao Maritime Police of Portimao and Ferragudo Lifeguard Station were immediately sent to the site. Several other tourist vessels also headed to the area.
âThe people who were on the boat were all in the water when they arrived with their life jackets on.
âThey were rescued with the support of a tourist boat that was nearby and the Ferragudo Lifeguard Station boat.
âSome were showing signs of hypothermia and they were evaluated then assisted by the medical teams at the scene, although they didnât require special medical assistance.â
An investigation into how the boat sank is currently underway.

A former captain of the Bayesian has described the terrifying obstacles facing those trapped in the cabins as the Bayesian superyacht overturned killing seven.
Stephen Edwards, who captained the Bayesian for five years until 2020, told The Telegraph : âThose who stayed curled up in bed were in the worst situation.
âThe storm hit hard, placing them in the melee of flying furniture, glass and other items,â he said adding he had spoken to traumatised crew members.
âInside the cabins, the only way to think of this is that people were lying in their beds one minute, and the next the room was on its side, totally dark, with the door now either in the floor or in the ceiling above.â
It came as divers race to retrieve Mike Lynchâs personal hard drives locked in a safe on the ocean floor, according to reports.
Italian newspaper la Repubblica reported that the tech billionaire, whose clients included MI5, the NSA and the Israeli secret service, didnât trust confidential documents on the cloud and kept two encrypted hard drives in a safe which now lies 49 metres below sea level.
Former captain claims Mike Lynchâs wife was always concerned about boat safety
The wife of Mike Lynch, 57-year-old Angela Bacares managed to escape to safety after suffering cuts from broken glass as she went to try and save her husband and daughter, according to la Repubblica.
The newspaper said she told doctors that at 4am, the boat had tilted and she and her husband were woken up.
Former captain Stephen Edwards told The Telegraph, Ms Bacares âalways wants to know what is happening and what the crew are doingâ.
âShe is always the first person to come up to the bridge if she hears us scuttling about up there. That could explain why she was saved and Mike wasnât.â
Mike Lynch and daughter Hannah were âpart of a united, vibrant, loving familyâ
Family friends of Mike and Hannah Lynch have said the father and daughter were part of a âunited, vibrant, loving familyâ â with the teenager remembered as a âdiamond in a sea of starsâ and the tech mogul as a brilliant storyteller.
Mr Lynch was the creator of software giant Autonomy and had been cleared in June of carrying out a massive fraud related to its 11 billion dollar (ÂŁ8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.
His daughter Hannah had recently finished her A-levels and was due to study at Oxford University.
Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian, said: âThose who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars. Bright, beautiful and always shining.
âWhat most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything.
âWhile swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them.
âI have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive.â
It is understood Ms Murray was rescued after disaster struck the yacht.
Seven key unanswered questions around the sinking of the Bayesian
With the Bayesian lying on her side 50 metres underneath the now gentle waters of the Mediterranean, mystery still surrounds how the 56-metre superyacht, sank in the typhoon off the port of Porticello.
Remotely controlled underwater vehicles and cave divers are looking to raise the yacht , which experts will examine in the coming days.
The key unanswered questions around the tragic sinking of the Bayesian
With the search continuing of the sunken Bayesian an investigation has been launched to establish what caused the disaster off the coast of Sicily
Mike Lynch net worth: How the billionaire made his money
Mike Lynch was frequently described as the Bill Gates of Britain for founding Autonomy â one of the biggest software firms on the planet
Former captain describes horror of those trapped in cabins
Stephen Edwards, who captained the Bayesian for five years until 2020, told the Telegraph that he had spoken to crew members onboard during the sinking who recounted the horrors facing those onboard.
He said: âThe storm hit hard, placing them in the melee of flying furniture, glass and other items.
âSome had made it to the saloon at this point and they are the ones who survived, as their route outside would have been a little clearer.
âInside the cabins, the only way to think of this is that people were lying in their beds one minute, and the next the room was on its side, totally dark, with the door now either in the floor or in the ceiling above.
âCabinets crashed open as the catches were weak, resulting in glassware and crockery falling out. Iâm told almost all the furniture broke loose inside the boat.â
Mike Lynchâs wife, along with 14 others, survived and were rescued by a nearby vessel that was unscathed.
Italian navy recover video equipment
Italian Navy divers have recovered video surveillance equipment from the wreckage of billionaire Mike Lynchâs Bayesian superyacht that could explain how it sank.
The British tech tycoonâs boat had been moored near the port of Porticello on 19 August when it sank during the early hours of the morning. It is now lying 50m below the surface.
Among those killed were Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who had been due to begin studying at Oxford University in September, as well as four other family friends and associates.
Divers hunting for clues on how Mike Lynchâs superyacht sank make discovery
The video equipment recovered could show if the crews left doors open on the Bayesian superyacht, which might have allowed the vessel to flood
What happens now weeks after tragic sinking?
Prosecutors are investigating the captain , New Zealander James Cutfield, and two crew members for possible responsibility in connection with the sinking.
Mr Cutfield is under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges. Tim Parker Eaton â the engineer who was in charge of securing the yachtâs engine room â and sailor Matthew Griffith â who was on watch duty on the night of the disaster â are now under investigation for the same possible charges, their lawyer said.
Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio, who is heading the investigation, has said his team will consider each possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yachtâs manufacturer.
Investigators are focusing on how a sailing vessel deemed âunsinkableâ by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. They added raising the Bayesian and examining the yacht for evidence would provide key elements to the investigation.
Maritime director of western Sicily, Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda of the coastguard, could not confirm how long it would take to retrieve the shipwreck of the sunken yacht, adding recovering the fuel tanks was a âpriority for us because it has environmental knock-on effectsâ.
Special forces divers and robots search Mike Lynchâs sunken Bayesian yacht for clues
Specialist military divers are currently searching the sunken Bayesian yacht for clues as to why it sunk in a freak storm off the coast of Siciliy, killing seven passengers.
British tech tycoon Mike Lynchâs boat had been moored near the port of Porticello on 19 August when it sank during the early hours of the morning, and is now lying 50 metres below the surface of the water.
About six divers from the Italian navy âs Comsubin unit are investigating the superyacht for electronic equipment, which includes data storage and CCTV and to see if doors were left open during the storm.
Holly Evans reports:
A sonar also being deployed to discover the best way to raise the wreckage from the sea
Chris Morvillo and wife drowned aboard Bayesian
Italian authorities said the first post-mortem examinations on the victims had been carried out on US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda . The results confirmed that the pair had drowned.
Morvillo was a partner at Clifford Chance, a white-collar law firm. He previously worked as a federal prosecutor who investigated the September 11 terror attacks, according to the New York Post .
Investigators hope to recover data on sinking of Bayesian
Navy divers recovered hard drives of the video surveillance system on board the Bayesian hopefully revealing the final moments before the tragic sinking of the superyacht.
In the engine room there were the hard disks that catalogued the parameters regarding the electric and thermal propulsion.
âWe hope to be able to read something from the mediaâ, an investigator told La Repubblica. They added âUnfortunately they are standard models that are not resistant to water and pressureâ.
There was no black box on board the 700-tonne sailing vessel that sank in minutes. It was not required to have one, as it was not a commercial cruise ship.
