How to Choose the Right Yacht to Charter

Consult the pros—talk to a broker.

The biggest question for first-time charterers is where to begin. The tried-and-tested method is to engage the help of a reputable charter broker. It’s their job to understand what you would like to get from the charter and then matchmake your preferences with the most suitable yacht.

“Engaging a professional charter broker is free and they are key to ensuring your holiday is stress-free,” Alexandra Groom, charter broker at Worth Avenue Yachts, told Robb Report . “Professional charter brokers have access to exclusive databases with stringent membership, communication and ethics rules, meaning they are most likely to be able to find you the right yacht in the right location, even if what you require is off market.”

“Make sure your broker gets to know you and your family,” adds Nick Trotter, chairman of the charter committee of MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association. “Finding the right broker is often via word of mouth, so ask your friends, ask people you trust, find out what they’ve done and who they’ve done it with. The communication between you and your broker is paramount because the broker represents you, they’re acting on your behalf, so you need to be able to articulate your vision.”

Neal Hornsby, co-founder and CEO of Yomira, advocates finding out about your broker’s eco-credentials, too: “Can they offset your carbon footprint from the charter, teach the kids about the marine environment or perhaps involve you in local conservation projects if you are keen to participate during your time aboard? The right broker for you is the broker that you not only connect with, but most importantly has the credibility to back up their advice.”

You can find a listing of charter brokers and companies that adhere to global guidelines at the  MYBA , the yachting industry’s technical and ethics guide, as well as that of the  International Yacht Brokers Association .

Booking With Apps

For those who feel safer behind a screen, several different online platforms, such as  Ahoy Club , Yotha and Borrow a Boat allow you to scroll and book your yacht. This flexible approach embraces a younger generation of digitally minded charterers. That said, hailing a $10 taxi ride with Uber is much less risky than booking a $500,000 charter on your iPhone. So be sure you have contact info for a live human in case anything goes wrong on your charter vacation.

Finding the Right Crew for Your Needs

Equally as important when choosing a yacht is making sure the crew are a good fit. If you have children in tow, you’ll want a family-friendly crew who can keep them entertained. If you’re traveling with a group of active friends, having crew who double as watersports instructors is a great benefit. Or maybe you’ve been dreaming of a gastronomic itinerary that features a Michelin-caliber chef on board? A broker will go over all your options. June Montagne, charter consultant at IYC, recommends requesting references on the crew prior to making your final decision. “Your crew are far more important than your yacht,” she told Robb Report .

Picking Your Yachting Destination

An important element of any charter is knowing where you would like to vacation. This will also heavily influence the yacht that you end up chartering. Different yachts are based in different locations and usually move throughout the year, so if you have your heart set on experiencing Lady E ’s brand-new beach club for spring break , you’ll be cruising the Indian Ocean. If you’re more interested in exploring UNESCO World Heritage sites along Croatia’s coastline, then GECO, which cruises the Eastern Mediterranean in summer , would be a smart option.

“Decide on your group’s makeup and whether or not you have a particular destination in mind,” Katya Hall, IYC sales and charter consultant, told Robb Report . “It’s fine if you don’t—your broker will propose yachts in multiple locations and walk you through highlights of every destination.”

The most common migration is the Mediterranean in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter. However, you will also find yachts cruising the waters of Central and South America, Antarctica, the Pacific islands, Northern Europe and even Costa Rica. In 2021, the Amalfi Coast in Italy and the Greek islands were among the most popular summer charter destinations.

Choose a Vessel That Fits Your Plan—and the Occasion

Most yachts carry the basic water toys and tenders for being towed and simple snorkeling exploration. But some yachts carry specific equipment, from personal submarines, decompression chambers for scuba diving, inflatable slides and even Hammam saunas and snow rooms. Does your charter have a theme? Or maybe you want to celebrate a birthday? Just be sure the yacht caters for your needs, whether planning a party with a DJ or hosting a business meeting.

“A yacht charter opens up destinations in ways that staying in a hotel can’t,” says Groom. “Instead of being restricted by transport links and journey times, you can start at one part of a coastline and end at another, taking in multiple islands, villages or bays in one short week, all from the comfort of your yacht. Even if a particular coastline is new to you, your captain will ensure that your trip focuses on the elements that are most important to you.”

If you want to keep the yacht on the move, its speed, size, draft depth and flag will determine how many stops you can make. For example, cruising in the Bahamas requires a shallow draft if you want to visit out islands like the Exumas, though plenty of ports have deeper waters.

“A yacht with stabilizers is key for first time charterers if they haven’t experienced the sea before,” advises Lotte Barker-Hahlo, charter broker at Burgess.

Why Yacht Size Matters

The duration of the trip and number of guests is another consideration. One week for family and a second week for friends? Or maybe you’re planning a three-week itinerary to island hop your way around the Florida Keys. Charter brokers usually list pricings per week and most charter yachts are certified to carry 12 guests, plus crew. If you plan to vacation with more than that, you will need a PYC- or SOLAS-class yacht, which is licensed for up to 36 passengers. Yachts such as 278-foot Victorious , an explorer vessel capable of circumnavigating the world, has 12 staterooms for 24 guests plus crew.

Guest cabin configurations tend to be varied and flexible. The principal (person who booked the charter) will typically take the master suite. But yachts with large VIPs, cabins with bunks designed for kids, and twin cabins with a Pullman bed make sleeping arrangements tailored to suit your group easy. Don’t forget to include in your count any personal assistants, babysitters or other security guards. And if anyone in your party has concerns about limited mobility, factoring an elevator or stair-climber into your criteria early on is a must.

When to Book

Once you’ve identified which yacht you prefer in your chosen destination, be sure not to leave booking until the last minute. Just like any other vacation, chartering over the summer holidays, Christmas and popular events such as the Monaco Grand Prix makes for the high-demand season.

“Only book when you’re ready!” says Hornsby. “But as with any holiday periods, July/August and Christmas/New Year are always in high demand so an early conversation with your broker is recommended. There are always some great deals to be done in the quieter months, but lead-in time is key, particularly as we emerge from a Covid world.”

In 2021, Fraser Yachts reported an increase of 56 percent in bookings across their charter fleet compared to the previous year, as well as a slight increase in the number of tandem charters—clients chartering two yachts simultaneously so more of the family could be together. Booking your charter at the last minute could mean you’re unable to secure your first, second or even third preference. If the timing and the yacht are both important, book a year in advance. If you are flexible with both dates and the yacht, most brokers can find a yacht for you.

Privacy and Personalization

Privacy and discretion form the backbone of yachting. Builders usually don’t share who the owner of a yacht is, nor do the brokers or crew. If you have concerns about the confidentiality of high-profile guests during your charter, requesting your charter broker to sign an NDA is an option. As with all elements of a bespoke yacht charter, the choice is yours, from dietary needs and favorite cocktails to service etiquette and daily activities.

If you or your travel partners are inclined to remain plugged in, most yachts feature high-speed Wi-Fi, allowing you to keep in touch as much or as little as you would like. For those keen to get out and explore, options range from shopping for local artisan goods, taking a cooking class or dropping anchor in one cove all day to dive and fish. It’s up to you how you spend your time, just be sure to give the crew a heads-up so they know what to be prepared for.

Yacht Charter Costs: What Should You Expect to Pay?

The final step is the contract. Most brokers use the MYBA contract or something similar. All these decisions lead down to the bottom line: How much does it cost?

“Ask for all expenses involved,” says Montagne. “Does the charter fee include expenses or are they are additional? Is there any tax or VAT payable? What percentage is acceptable in the area you will be chartering? What about liability and trip cancellation insurance?” All these points need to be considered.

As an example, for the 2021 summer season, the 160-foot Rossinavi EIV superyacht, with five cabins and nine crew chartered in the Mediterranean from approximately $280,000 per week. The overall price varies with fuel consumption (staying in port or cruising), location (France or Greece), the number of people you are traveling with, food and drink, as well as activities. Adding in food and drink; expenses for docking, fuel and other fees; and tips will tack roughly 30 to 50 percent of the charter rate to your trip. So, if you were on  EIV  for a week last summer, it most likely cost you between $364,000 and $420,000 depending on how often the yacht moved, how many bottles of rosé you went through, and what kind of gratuity you left the crew for your incredible stay on board.

How Yacht Size and Destination Determine Price

When it comes to costs, the size of the yacht matters. A smaller yacht will cost less, while the 446-foot Flying Fox , one of the largest charter yachts on the market accommodating 25 guests and with an unprecedented 4,300-square-foot two-floor spa, charters from around $3,400,000 per week.

Certain destinations, such as Patagonia or Kamchatka, may bring a different set of fees if you intend on heli-skiing, while heavily protected locations like Antarctica and the Galapagos require permits confirmed in advance. Wherever you cruise, you will heavily rely on the knowledge, professionalism and help of the crew, so it goes without saying that the service tip is a crucial fee that should factor into your expenses.

How Much to Tip the Crew

MYBA suggests five to 15 percent as customary, though it’s left up to your discretion to reward an exceptional crew with a larger amount if you think that’s fair, or a smaller amount if the service hasn’t been up to par. In terms of how to hand the tip over, standard procedure is to leave the gratuity with the captain at the end of your stay so he or she can divvy among the various crew members you may or may not have seen, based on their duties.

All that’s left is to prepare to have a vacation of your lifetime. “There is nothing that compares to spending time on the water with your family and friends,” says Hall. “It’s about enjoying watersports, having exquisite meals and discovering magical spots of the world along the way.”

Find the Answers to the Most Commonly Asked Questions About Yacht Charter Yacht Charter FAQs

As the ultimate luxury holiday, a superyacht rental can be tailored uniquely to your needs and preferences. Our experienced brokers work with you to understand which private yacht for charter is perfect for you. Then, using their global network of over 3,000 luxury yachts for charter, they will find all available yachts that match your requirements. Using their extensive local knowledge, your Charter Broker can work with the Captain to advise a charter itinerary that is totally unique to you. Should you have questions at any stage of the charter process, your broker will be available to assist.

Once you have decided you wish to proceed with booking your superyacht for charter, we will issue you with a contract. This is likely one of two standard contracts depending on the cruising region. The most common is the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA) charter agreement, endorsed by a leading London maritime lawyer. This contract has evolved over the last 20 years and is now regarded as the reliable industry standard. The two-part American Yacht Charter Association (AYCA) agreement is primarily used in the U.S. and with U.S.-flagged vessels, also adopting terms from the MYBA agreement.

What is and is not included in the price of your superyacht for charter varies from yacht to yacht and you may be expected to pay the following in addition to the set charter rate: – APA – The APA, or Advanced Provisioning Allowance, represents the operating expenses that you will incur during your stay on board, including but not limited to fuel, berthing fees, customs charges and food and beverages. – Shipping/supply agent fees – Local taxes – Delivery fees

Your broker will gladly advise you on all additional charges during the process of selecting your luxury yacht for charter.

In most cases, you will be required to pay (by wire transfer) a 50% deposit of the total yacht hire fee upon signing the Charter Agreement. The remaining 50% of the charter fee plus the APA and any applicable taxes, delivery fees and security deposit are due one month before the beginning of your charter.

Culinary excellence is often the highlight of any yacht charter, and your personal chef will ensure your dining experience is no different. Prior to your charter, we will ask you to complete an information sheet noting your culinary preferences or any special dietary requirements, beverages, newspapers, flowers or other special requests. Details on any medical issues, allergies and special occasions can be noted. We encourage you to divulge as much information as possible to give the crew a detailed understanding before you step on board your luxury yacht for a charter like no other.

It is common practice on most luxury yachts for charter that small quantities of personal laundry are carried out by the yacht’s crew as a service. Please note that these terms also allow the crew to refuse politely to do excessive quantities of laundry on board or to handle particularly delicate items. It may be possible to have certain laundry done ashore professionally if time allows, the cost of which will be deducted from the APA.

If your time on board a private yacht rental has been everything you hoped it would be, by all means, show your appreciation with a gratuity. However, please note that, on all superyachts for charter, although crew gratuities are customary, they are left at your sole discretion. As a guideline, we would suggest between 10% and 20% of the charter fee to be split equally between the crew depending on the level of service.

Generally, on luxury yachts for charter, smoking is not permitted inside the yacht for safety reasons. Many private yachts operate a policy of smoking permitted on deck only; however, please check the policy as each yacht varies in its approach to smoking on board.

Typically, two seasons are ideal for chartering a private yacht. The summer season lasts from the beginning of May until the end of October and mainly revolves around the Mediterranean, whereas the winter season runs from November until April when the Caribbean and Bahamas are traditionally the destination of choice. We have many superyachts for charter during these periods in destinations around the globe, however it is crucial to keep in mind that popular yachts in the most exclusive destinations are typically booked months in advance.

The total cost of your private yacht hire will depend on a variety of factors. This includes the size and type of yacht you charter, alongside your cruising area, travel itinerary and any other special requirements you have for your luxury yacht experience. Don't hesitate to get in touch with our specialist team to find more information on our yacht rental prices and our services.

SUPERYACHT LIFE

Top tips for a first superyacht charter

A superyacht charter is one of the most extraordinary holiday experiences it’s possible to have, but if you’ve never done it before it can be daunting to know where to start. Here are some top tips for first-time yacht charterers.

When you first approach a superyacht, whether by car to a quay or by luxury tender to the middle of a stunning anchorage, there’s nothing quite like the feeling. With a professional crew whose sole focus is your pure enjoyment, and all the facilities of a luxury villa, a seven-star hotel and a watersports resort combined into the most extraordinary piece of design and engineering most of us will ever see, a superyacht holiday with family and friends can deliver the most unique and bespoke of experiences and create memories that will last a lifetime. The adventure and relaxtion a yacht offers can also be your first taste of the superyachting good life – whether you decide to try yacht chartering again or maybe take the plunge into yacht ownership.

“A superyacht charter is like no other holiday you have had,” says Catherine Wilson, a New York-based charter broker for brokerage house Burgess. “Everything is tailored to you and your guests, from food preferences (with your own personal chef) to even the itinerary. Between yourself, the captain and your charter broker you will plan your perfect trip – and if you turn up at a port and the weather isn’t quite what you wanted, well, then you can just move on. A superyacht charter is just like renting a private island, but this island can move.”

That’s not all. “The crew are solely focused on you as guests on board the yacht – you’re not just going to a hotel’s restaurant and ordering from a menu. It’s the ultimate way of being bespoke,” adds Rupert Wakeley, senior charter broker at TJB Super Yachts. “And you see a country in a way you never could from a hotel, and you’re seeing places that are inaccessible by any other means. Finally,” he says, “there’s the privacy a superyacht offers.”

If the idea of chartering a superyacht is tempting but it’s something you’ve never done before – or perhaps you’ve never even set foot on a yacht before – it can be a daunting proposition. How do you choose which yacht, and where should you go? What’s included in the fee and what is extra? Are superyachts safe and, perhaps most importantly, will I feel seasick? Thankfully, for those who want a taste of the superyachting good life there are experts who can help – and who can make the whole process seamless. Here are some tips from charter brokers on how to get started, and some answers to common first-timer questions.

Top tips for a first superyacht charter

Family onboard St David

Do I need a charter broker, and how do I find one?

If you’re not sure where to get started, a charter broker will be able to help with professional advice, because there isn’t always one answer. It depends entirely on the party, and what you’re looking for in a charter holiday and as amenities on the yacht. Remember, a superyacht charter is a tailored experience.

“If there is a particular destination and time you are looking for your charter broker will source a number of suitable yachts for you to choose from,” Wilson advises. “The broker would have handpicked these yachts based on your criteria, taking into account age ranges of the party, activities, whether the yacht is family-friendly or even if you are planning a big celebration. They will also know the crew on each yacht so they can select the best match.

“It all starts with understanding the client or the group of people coming on board,” Says Wakeley. “And thinking about what they are after – are you looking for pure seclusion and going to hidden beaches and coves, or do you want to be on the dock every night? Sometimes you may have a destination in mind already, for which an experienced broker can then recommend the best yachts for your needs. Sometimes for a first-time charter we might recommend particular destinations that serve as a great introduction to what superyacht charter is all about.”

Top tips for a first superyacht charter

How do you know it’s for you?

The idea of spending a week or two on a yacht can also bring with it certain concerns. Will it be comfortable, how much motion is there and will it feel safe? Fortunately, modern superyachts are not only built to the very highest standards of luxury, they are also built to the very highest standards of safety. What’s more, your broker can select only yachts that have stabilizers for you. Which counteract the rolling motion under way and at anchor and can therefore mitigate any potential for seasickness. Further, the total flexibility of a superyacht charter means you can enjoy the yacht in the way that suits you.

For Wakeley, the stabiliser technology that keeps a motor yacht level and more-or-less still in the waves is one aspect, but there are also alternative types of vessel that might suit. “There are some incredible catamarans now,” he advises, “and a catamaran is like being on your own moving villa because they are absolutely huge and they are super stable – they can be a great platform to get started on.”

“A yachting holiday allows the best of both worlds,” adds Wilson. “You can spend all your time onboard or you can island-hop and spend your days ashore. You can use the yacht as your own private beach – sunbathe, and then get the watertoys out before an alfresco lunch on deck, or you can take the yacht’s tender and head into port to explore. The tender will be at your beck and call too.”

What is included in the charter fee?

While charter rates vary from high to low season and from yacht to yacht, they essentially are structured the same way. As Wilson points out, the fee includes the hire of the vessel, all amenities on board including the watertoys, and the crew. VAT or tax will be charted on the charter fee depending on your country of embarkation. There’s also what’s known as the advance provisioning allowance – or APA – which is essentially your onboard expense account. For all operating expenses incurred while on the yacht such as food and drinks, fuel, port and agency fees.

“The APA is collected as between 30-40% of the charter fee, and a crew gratuity is also recommended between 10-20% of the charter fee based on your experience on board,” says Wilson. “If there is a balance remaining in the APA at the end of the charter, most clients put this toward the gratuity. Also, a preference form will be provided prior to your charter. Which covers everything from dietary restrictions to beverage requests and even how you like your coffees in the morning.” The more detail provided, she says, the better prepared the crew will be for your time on board.

“All the food, fuel and any other costs are all charged without mark-up,” adds Wakeley. “The APA is there simply to cover any and all ad hoc expenses. Essentially it’s there to make your holiday as relaxing as possible, because when you’re on board you don’t need to reach into your pocket at all. It’s also a very fair way of setting costs, because if you eat dinner ashore every night, you’re not going to be charged the costs for dinner on board.”

Top tips for a first superyacht charter

How accessible is charter and how important is the broker?

We’ve all seen the headlines of superyachts that reportedly cost hundreds of millions to build and are chartering for millions of dollars. But the truth is that there are only a tiny number of these giants. The vast majority of the superyacht fleet comprises yachts at the smaller end of the scale, starting at around 30 metres in length. This also translates into superyacht charter being a much more accessible proposition than most people realise.

As Wilson points out, chartering a 30 metre yacht can start at around €50,000. Which split between three or four couples, for example, is comparable to many villa rentals or high-end hotel stays. Wakeley adds that entry-level charters on a yacht large enough to give you a taste of the superyachting good life can start from as little as €25,000 per week.

“There are 2,000 superyachts in charter, and it’s our job as brokers to understand what a client’s needs are and which one will work for them.” Says Wakeley, adding that it’s also important not to try to create too intense an itinerary for your first charter, so you can enjoy the complete flexibility a superyacht offers.

“A superyacht charter is an expensive holiday and therefore it is extremely important that it runs smoothly,” Wilson advises. “There are many factors to figure into the experience. By choosing a reputable and knowledgeable broker to assist you through the process can mitigate a lot of potential issues. A broker spends their time researching the yachts spending time with the crew and are experts in negotiating the best deals. And if you are wondering if you will like it, the best thing to do is try it,” she concludes. “Most people never look back!”

‘We didn’t see it coming’: Bayesian superyacht captain breaks silence as freak tornado sank vessel in just 12 minutes

  • Published : Invalid Date,

THE captain of the Bayesian superyacht has broken his silence after the vessel sank off the coast of Sicily.

One person has died and six remain missing after the £14m yacht was hit by a tornado yesterday at about 5am local time.

The £14m Bayesian superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily, Italy yesterday

The boat sank just a couple hundred metres off the shore 50m below the waves.

Those on board said the  mast collapsed in stormy weather causing glass to shatter everywhere and the boat to capsize.

Witnesses said a 12-minute waterspout had struck the boat, bringing a furious vortex against the vessel.

The ship's captain James Calfield, 51, spoke from hospital yesterday and said he had no idea the tornado was coming towards the ship.

Others told Italian outlet Ansa that the anchor was down when the storm hit on Monday morning, causing the ship to lose its balance.

Some 22 horrified passengers, made up of passengers and staff, screamed in fear as the boat flipped over.

The body of one man, the boat's chef, has been found near the destroyed ship.

Fifteen people were rescued from the water, including a one-year-old British girl, whose mum held her above her head before they were saved.

Mike Lynch, previously dubbed "the British Bill Gates", was hosting a party on the boat along with his wife and daughter.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorological Society, said 200kmh winds could be felt over Sunday through Monday.

He described the weather as: “A so-called funnel cloud forms, generating winds of up to 200kmh which can create a water spout at sea by sucking water into the air.

“The event can be restricted to a few hundred metres and be over in ten minutes."

The Bayesian has the highest aluminium mast in the world with experts believing the height could have caused the vessel to tip over.

The yacht slept 22, with 10 being staff

A one-year-old British girl named Sophia was  rescued by her mother  Charoltte Golunski in the sea after the sinking before they were rushed to hospital.

Golunski spoke about the frantic rescue, telling Giornale di Sicilia: "For two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amidst the fury of the waves.

"I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy. Many were screaming.

"I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.

"Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us managed to get on board."

MOST PASSENGERS FROM UK

The majority of passengers were understood to be from the UK.

Citizens from New Zealand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Canada, the US and two dual British-French nationals were also on board.

THE BAYESIAN superyacht was hosting a lavish party for 12 guests, with 10 crew also onboard.

After 15 people were rescued from the water on Monday, six people remain missing and one has been found dead.

Italian authorities said the man recovered near the yacht wreckage was the chef working onboard.

Four of the missing are British and two are American.

Mike Lynch, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18, are among the four Brits lost at sea.

International chairman of bank giant Morgan Stanley, Brit Jonathan Bloomer, 70, is also missing along with his wife Judy.

As is top New York lawyer Chris Morvillo, a solicitor at major firm Clifford Chance who worked for Mike Lynch, and his wife Neda.

Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off Italy where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city, Palermo.

The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national, was recovered Monday.

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Bayesian yacht accident in Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after they got into a lifeboat.

Built by the Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury this year, stemming from the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  him Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch recovered, 1 still missing after luxury superyacht sank in freak storm off Sicily. Here's what we know about the incident.

Rescue crews recovered the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch off the coast of Sicily, the Italian coast guard said Thursday. One woman still remains missing.

Four bodies were recovered on Wednesday by divers searching for six missing passengers who were aboard the Bayesian, a luxury superyacht that sank on Monday after it was caught in the middle of an unexpected and violent storm.

Among the passengers were Lynch's 18-year-old daughter and "associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial," the Associated Press reported .

What happened?

The Bayesian capsized about half a mile off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village. There were 22 people on board — 12 passengers and 10 crew members. The City Council of Bagheria said in a statement that seven adults were taken to the emergency room following the rescue, but “it seems that none are in serious conditions.”

While crews searched for the remaining bodies, others are trying to confirm why the boat sank in the first place. According to a BBC report , a heavy storm hit the coast of Sicily and created waterspouts , which are tornadoes that form over water. The waterspout winds were so powerful that they broke the boat’s mast in half, causing the ship, which was anchored, to lose its balance and sink.

The U.K.’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch plans to send a team of four investigators to make a preliminary assessment of why the Bayesian sank and why people were still on board.

As the ship was going down, 15 people were able to make it to safety and were rescued by a nearby boat.

The crew on a Dutch-flagged vessel nearby noticed the yacht had disappeared and saw flares being set off in the sea. They went to help survivors before the Italian coast guard could arrive.

One British passenger, Charlotte Golunski, told reporters she kept her 1-year-old daughter alive by holding her up above the water until they got on a lifeboat.

What to know about the Bayesian

Charter sites list the yacht’s weekly rent as $215,000, the Associated Press reported .

Boat International , a superyacht and luxury yacht guide, reported that the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world at over 240 feet, making it one of the 50 largest sailing yachts in the world.

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, founded the software firm Autonomy and recently faced a legal battle with U.S.-based Hewlett-Packard after the tech company accused him of inflating Autonomy’s value in an $11 billion sale in 2011.

Lynch was acquitted of multiple fraud charges in June after a three-month trial, avoiding a potential 20-year jail sentence.

Yacht Charter Costs Explained

Credit card

A comprehensive breakdown of your charter costs and fees.

When you begin planning a luxury yacht charter it is important to be aware of what is included in the cost of booking your dream charter yacht. although a yacht will have a base charter fee, this may or may not include additional expenses such as food and fuel and this is subject to the terms and conditions within the charter contract. there are various types of charter contracts and which one applies to you will depend on where you wish to cruise., high season.

High season refers to the most popular weeks of the year for yacht charter, whether it’s the winter period in the Caribbean or the height of summer in the Mediterranean , booking in high season requires early planning, determination and a big budget. In addition, planning a yacht charter to coincide with a major event will also be reflected in the price with marine spots for elite events often booking up early. Allow plenty of time when making enquiries to ensure a star studded, well prepared arrival.

Low season typically refers to any time outside of the high season periods. Groups of families and friends looking for a relaxing luxury vacation are advised to avoid high season weeks and opt for weeks outside of this time. The busiest periods are of course reflected in the charter costs and can be up to 15 to 30 percent more expensive than typical low season periods. Chartering a few weeks either side of these busy periods can be almost exactly the same, with the weather almost unchanged in some places, with far less crowds.

Take to our detailed destination guides and browse the yachts available in your chosen destination. Some of the most successful superyachts in the industry can be reserved up to a year in advance and as most yacht brokers will warn away from last minute bookings, it is better to book early and have the pick of the bunch rather than miss out at the last moment. Browse the Events section for details on upcoming festivals and sporting events or visit our Finding a Yacht Broker page to begin your planning your luxury yacht charter.

This article will go into detail of the costs to be expected when planning and booking a yacht charter. From the base charter fee of a yacht, what is covered within the fee and how it may vary in addition to details of contracts and how an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) can be used to manage any expenses.

Base Charter Fee

The base charter fee in essence refers to the hire cost of the yacht itself, with all equipment in working order in addition to the cost of food and wages for the crew during the entirety of the charter. This is essentially all the base charter fee covers with additional expenses often applicable on top. The base charter fee will vary from one yacht to another and this may be down to any number of reasons from size and on board amenities to the charter season. For instance, the base rate of a charter yacht may increase in "high season" and reduce during the "low season". "High season" and "low season" refers to the busiest and slowest periods for yacht charters though this may appear misleading, as these peak times refer to periods of weeks as opposed to full seasons. In addition, you may find that a yacht is also more expensive during special events such as the Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival and America's Cup. Unless you are keen to charter a yacht for a particular "high season" event, choose your dates carefully as although a "high season" rate will be more expensive than the "low season" the two can sometimes share much of the same weather conditions.

Aside from seasons and events, yachts of the same size may also differ in price and this may be down to a vast difference in on board amenities. A yacht which boasts an on board cinema or lavish water toys may have a higher base rate compared with a yacht of minimal amenities of the same size. If it is unclear as to why two yachts of the same size are vastly different in price, ask your yacht broker to explain what the differences are. Once you are clear on what the base price is and why, it is important to discover what costs will be applicable on top and this is dependent on the type of charter contract used.

The type of charter contract applicable to your charter will depend on where in the world you are cruising, as there are various terms within the industry which dictate how the payment structure is determined. For instance, a MYBA (Worldwide Yachting Association, formerly known as Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association) contract operates under Western Mediterranean Terms (WMT) and is arguably the most commonly used, particularly with large yachts embarking on a Mediterranean yacht charter. This contract is often referred to as a "plus all expenses" contract and requires that the charterer pay for fuel, food, beverages and dockage fees as an additional expense outside of the base charter fee. Typically, guests can accumulate an additional 25% to 50% of the base charter fee though this is dependent on what is consumed. These expenses can be tracked through the use of an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) which we will cover in the next section.

Alternatively, smaller yachts on a Caribbean yacht charter can expect a "mostly all-inclusive" contract known as Caribbean Terms Inclusive (CTI) sometimes referred to as Standard Caribbean Terms (SCT). The Standard Caribbean Terms greatly differ from Western Mediterranean Terms, as the Caribbean terms include three meals a day in addition to four hours cruising per day which is included in the base charter fee.

In addition to the commonly used MYBA terms and Standard Caribbean Terms, there are also less frequently used terms such as Standard Eastern Mediterranean Terms (SEMT) and Greek Terms (GI). Read our guide on Understanding Charter Contracts for more information and if you are unsure as to what is included under the terms of your contract, be sure to ask your broker.

Advance Provisioning Allowance (commonly referred to as APA)

Irrespective of the charter contract it is important for guests to be aware of the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). The APA was designed to enable charterers to manage their expenses through a clear and trackable arrangement. An APA is a way to deposit the estimated expense amount of your charter to cover costs such as fuel, food and dockage fees. Typically, the APA accrues to approximately 25% to 30% of the base charter fee, though this does of course depend on the charter parties tastes and requirements and could be far less or far greater than this estimation. For instance, charter guests who intend to regularly dine on caviar and vintage wine can expect to pay more, whereas guests on board a sailing yacht charter can expect to save on fuel costs. Charterers can request an estimated APA amount from the yacht broker based on their on board expectations.

The APA is to be paid approximately one month prior to boarding the charter yacht and is paid directly to the Captain of the yacht. Once the APA has been paid to the captain it will then be retained as a bank account of sorts, from which the captain can make expenditures whilst keeping a record of what has been spent. At any point during the yacht charter guests can request a rundown of accounts from the captain as a way of keeping track of expenditures. The captain will request that any additional funds are paid during the charter should guests exceed the APA. It is therefore a good idea to keep an additional account with your yacht broker on shore, as should the APA become critically low at any time the yacht broker can release additional funds to the captain on the charterers command. Cash can be used if necessary though an on shore account may be deemed as hassle free to some.

It is important to remember that food and fuel for example, are charged at cost without mark up to the charterer and upon disembarking, transactions can be reviewed by the "head" charterer and Captain with any remaining funds to be paid back to the charterer.

Fuel and Dockage Fees

It is important to remember that whilst considering fuel costs, the fuel consumed when using jet-skis and tenders will also apply to the charterer. In addition, whilst docked at a marina the generators used in order to produce electricity will also use fuel. The distance travelled and speed of cruising also affects fuel costs and it is important to bear these factors in mind. Dockage fees may vary from very little to large sums and this is dependent again upon the location and whether you wish to dock during a special event such as the Monaco Grand Prix.

Although insurance costs are not directly connected to the charter costs as such, it is useful to bear in mind should you with to take out Charterers Liability Insurance or Cancellation and Curtailment cover. You can read more information regarding insurance in our How to Book and Plan a Yacht Charter article.

Value Added Tax (VAT)

European Union (EU) tax laws state VAT will apply should you disembark within their waters, for example Italian territorial waters. This may also apply to some Caribbean islands. Commercially registered vessels are usually VAT exempt though vessels which are not commercially registered will be liable for VAT for all charters within the EU.

No request is too large or detail too small on a yacht charter though it is wise to keep in mind the shipping costs should you request an expensive bottle of champagne to be transported to you whilst you are residing in a secluded bay of the Caribbean. It is important to understand the entire payment structure to ensure no unpleasant surprises arise and it is often prudent to keep an escrow account with your broker on shore in order to control charter costs without having to carry cash on board.

Canadian among 6 missing after superyacht sinks in storm off Sicily; 1 dead

The Associated Press Staff

ROME -- British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

The vessel had overturned around 5 a.m. off the port of Porticello. The Italian coast guard said that the superyacht had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers. They included British, American and Canadian nationalities.

One body had been recovered, and police divers were trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello, near Palermo, where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said.

Global Affairs Canada says it's aware of reports that a Canadian has died after the luxury superyacht sank off Sicily during a violent storm.

The agency says consular officials are in contact with local authorities, but says it can provide no further information due to privacy concerns.

Authorities in Sicily say one body has been recovered and police divers are trying to reach the hull of the ship as six people remain unaccounted for.

They say 15 others survived. The Italian coast guard says the yacht had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers.

Salvo Cocina, of Sicily’s civil protection agency, says the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries, including Britain, the United States, France, Germany and Myanmar.

Rescue authorities say the yacht — the 56-metre British-flagged Bayesian — was anchored off Porticello, near Palermo, when a tornado over the water struck the area overnight.

A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-metre (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-metre (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about US$215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Emsley, said she momentarily lost hold of her one-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Eight of the 15 people rescued and taken ashore at Porticello were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the Italian fire rescue service.

Rescue crews located the vessel and deep-water police divers were trying to access the hull, Cari said. The operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in a life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s US$11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s 2011 acquisition of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The fraud accusations represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an US$800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.
