• Platinum Yachts

This magnificent yacht was originally commissioned by Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei. Construction was suspended in 1998 and the vessel left unfinished until HH Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum secured the rumoured $300 million project. Platinum Yachts took the mega yacht to completion and in 2006 launched Dubai to become the world’s largest private yacht. Today however, Dubai is the second largest privately owned yacht in the world.

Launched in February 2022, Project Blue is Lurssen's latest secretive yacht project. With little revealed about her specifications and designers, her expansive size was confirmed by the German shipyard following her launch: an incredible 160m. Project Blue will be Lurssen's second-largest superyacht, and is due to be delivered in 2023. She was recently spotted in Bremerhaven, Germany, making her way out to sea for her maiden sea trial. She is expected to have a beam of 21m, and a gross tonnage of 15,320 GT. Her other specifications are currently unknown.

Originally known as Project Omar, the 156 metre superyacht Dilbar was launched in 2016 after over 4 years of construction. A favourite with yachtspotters worldwide, Dilbar is considered the largest superyacht in the world by volume.

Like most royal superyachts, little is known about Al Said, a giant mega yacht formerly codenamed "Project Sunflower". She was delivered to the Sultan of Oman in 2008 as a replacement for a smaller mega yacht of the same name. At a stunning 155m, Al Said consists of six large decks and features striking exterior and interior design by Espen Oeino International, the same company that designed the stunning 127m mega yacht Octopus. According to reports, Al Said is said to accommodate as many as 70 guests and 154 professional crew, as well as featuring a concert room capable of accommodating a 50 piece orchestra.

When construction of A+ (formerly named Topaz) first began she was forecast to be the 4th largest yacht in the world and to measure approximately 147m (482’3’’ft). Having left her floating shed at the Lürssen shipyard located in Bremen, Germany, she is now ready to claim that mantle and undergo the final phases of construction.

Prince Abdulaziz

As one of the yachts of the Saudi Royal Family, Prince Abdulaziz is used to conduct official business as well as for pleasure. The largest yacht built in the 20th century, the interior alone took 15 months to complete. Originally built for the late King Fahd of Saudi Arabia who named the yacht after his son, it is now owned by his brother Abddullah.

Very little is known about Lurssen's mysterious superyacht OPERA. At 146m, the superyacht will be the sixth largest yacht Lurssen has built at the time of her launch in September 2022. OPERA was first spotted in May 2021 when she transported to the yard's Bremen outfitting facilities in Germany.

El Mahrousa

This Egyptian presidential yacht is not only one of the world’s largest but also one of the oldest. Built in 1865 in London, the yacht was intended for the King of Egypt. Originally named Mahroussa, El Horriya was extended in 1872 and again in 1905.  Nowadays she is berthed in Alexandria and is listed as a training ship by the Egyptian Navy.

Developed by German shipyard Lürssen, construction of Project Luminance is underway at their facilities near Lemwerder. Due to enter the esteemed list of the Top 10 largest superyachts in the world, information about the 145m superyacht is limited at this moment in time. Lürssen are world-famous for their incredible innovations and their capacity to build extremely large mega yachts filled with numerous features. Photos that have been captured of the boat indicate that she will have considerable deck space with plenty of room left over indoors to be packed out with luxury.

SAILING YACHT A

Sailing Yacht A is a highly unique vessel, with an LOA of 142.81m. She is one of the world’s largest and the most advanced superyachts with a number of unique features, including an underwater observation pod, hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system and premium navigation systems. Her three masts are the tallest and most highly loaded freestanding composite structures in the world. • ADMShipyards

The 141m superyacht Swift141, now christened 'Yas', was successfully launched by ADMShipyards in November 2011; entering the record books as both the largest launch of 2011 and most significant superyacht in recent history. ADMShipyards, members of Privinvest, has proudly announced the launch of their first superyacht. At 141 meters, this stunning private yacht ranks as the sixth largest superyacht in the world.

• Lloyd Werft

Project Solaris is the revolutionary explorer yacht built by German masters of engineering Lloyd Werft. Topping off the yard's record for ultra large luxury yacht build, Project Solaris is an estimated 139m+ explorer yacht at the German giant's shed.

Scheherezade

As with most yachts in construction at Lurssen, little is known about this 140m project. We do not yet know the designer or architect, but she has been spotted moving around the build-hall. Her sightings have lead yacht spotters on the docks of the yard to aptly name her 'Project Lightning.' We hope to see her launch towards the end of 2019.

The largest yacht ever built in Italy and one of the ten largest in the world, Fincantieri has announced the successful delivery of Project Victory - a 140 metre superyacht launched in 2014 - under the official name of Ocean Victory.

Code named as Mipos (short for Mission Possible) during her construction, Al Salamah belongs to Saudi Arabian Defence Minister Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz. Kept a great secret, rumours tell that she has over 80 rooms, a helipad, and an indoor swimming pool complete with glass roof. Owned by media bigwig David Geffen, Rising Sun is rumoured to have been commissioned by Ellison specifically to be larger than Paul Allen’s Octopus. This 2004 yacht is spread over five decks and is equipped with everything from Jacuzzi bathrooms and wine cellars to a top deck basketball court.

Yachts, as with most other things connected to the ultrarich—apartments, shopping sprees, bank accounts—are getting bigger. And while price, nautically speaking, usually scales with size, that’s not always the case. So there’s, oddly enough, less overlap between this list and our recent list of the  World’s Most Expensive Superyachts than one might expect.

There are reasons behind this. Interestingly, some of the biggest superyachts in the world have become so stunningly large that they can no longer maintain status as belonging to a single family or dynasty. The largest ones have become condominiums or charterable research vessels—playthings for the ultrawealthy.

Still, superyachts offer a kind of privacy that it is nearly impossible to come by on land. Pencil towers have entrances on public streets and elevators with other residents. Even a castle surrounded by a moat is in view, comparatively. A superyacht, on the other hand, is essentially a private island, an oasis. So as long as the rich keep getting richer, the yachts will keep getting bigger. For now, these are the five biggest superyachts in the world.

5. Eclipse (533 ft)

In 2010, as  Eclipse sailed out of the Hamburg harbor, where it was constructed by notable German shipbuilder Blohm+Voss, it was the world’s largest ship. In the intervening decade or so, it’s slid to the fifth position. Commissioned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich—whose ties to Putin have caused him to be sanctioned—it allegedly traded hands last year, though this may be simply a dodge to avoid it being seized. Features of the $600 million Terence Disdale–designed ship include 17 staterooms, a 185-foot deck on the massive primary suite, a gym, a spa, an immense swimming pool, and a half-dozen on-board tenders for shuttling guests in and out of port and excursions. With a core focus on marine research and conservation, the 183m/600ft motor yacht REV will have the ability to collect and generate energy from ocean plastics. She will become the world's largest yacht upon completion, and will be available for private yacht charters in some of the most remote regions on earth.

Currently in the final stages of construction, research expedition vessel REV (or REVOcean) is pioneering the latest in technological innovation to create a new generation of superyacht.  

She will be equipped with some of the most impressive on-board features ever seen on a yacht, including the ability to collect and generate energy from 5 tonnes of ocean plastics per day.

She will be used primarily as a research platform for studying the world’s oceans and finding solutions to problems including climate change, overfishing and plastic pollution.

REV has a gross tonnage of 17,440 tonnes and a length of 182.9m, or 600ft.

Currently the longest ever superyacht is 180.65m (592ft) superyacht AZZAM , while the largest yacht in terms of gross tonnage is 156m (511ft) superyacht DILBAR, with a volume of 15,917 gross tonnes.

REV knocks both of them out of the water, and will become both the largest and longest yacht in the world when she is delivered.

She has been commissioned by ocean research company Rosselinis Four-10, which is owned by Norwegian billionaire Kjell Inge Roekke.

Income for crewed yacht charters will go towards funding the yacht's future research operations.

State-of-the-art research facilities

REV will play host to six laboratories with multi-functional usage which includes dry, wet and chilled facilities for a range of different research purposes. 

She will also have a huge 7.7m x 5m Moon pool in her hull. This wide opening will provide direct access to the water below, allowing underwater vehicles to be lowered and raised with increased ease and flexibility. 

In total, around 4,000 square metres (the equivalent of 15 tennis courts) of on-board space is dedicated to research, which makes up around 40% of REV’s interior.

Live species harvesting

REV will use highly sophisticated technology to safely collect and winch live species of fish from around 3,000 metres below the sea’s surface.

The winches can maintain position and depth whatever the weather and sea conditions, making them reliable under any circumstances.

A live visual feed helps to identify the species, and the system can be adjusted to target a particular size of fish and release those that don’t match. They are transported on board REV through a pipe, and can then be released unharmed after being studied or tagged. 

REV will also feature drop keels fitted with sensitive hydrophones which will listen out for marine mammals.

She also has a dive centre with a decompression chamber, air and nitrox systems.

Underwater discovery

The yacht's hangar will house an impressive range of vehicles and accessories. These include remotely-operated water vehicles capable of descending to depths of 6,000m (almost 4 miles) with the help of a cord connected to REV. 

REV will also have a fully autonomous underwater vehicles, which use sonar to scan the seafloor and pinpoint a predefined mark. These can be extremely helpful when finding shipwrecks or other irregularities on the seabed.

She will have a submarine and dedicated equipment to measure CTD (conductivity, temperature, and depth).

Two helipads

REV has two helipads for drones and helicopter surveys. One is located on the aft deck and the second is on the foredeck. 

They will make it even easier to access and disembark the yacht, particularly when it comes to stepping on shore in high-latitude regions.

Dual helipads and helicopters are also essential for exploring Polar regions, creating a back-up should there be any kind of mechanical failure, giving REV full global access.

Superyacht styling

The yacht's exterior style is the work of world-renowned designer Espen Oeino. Designed to balance the functionality of a research vessel with the elegance of a superyacht, her profile is streamlined and well-proportioned

H2 Design is responsible for the yacht's interiors. Jonny Horsfield, head designer, has said that he is embracing the unique challenges associated with a project like this, and hopes to create a holistic and calming interior. 

In total, the yacht provides accommodation for 28 guests in 18 cabins with a complete crew of 54.

Auditorium and media editing suite

REV will boast an enormous auditorium with tiered seating to host up to 36 people. Fitted with an advanced sound system, the space will be perfect for lectures and knowledge-sharing events.

The yacht will also have a conference centre with two meeting rooms and a hot-swap desk arrangement which is designed to facilitate social interactions between research teams and other charter guests.

Environmentally-friendly credentials

Environmental performance was a crucial component throughout the building of REV. She features the SeaQ Green Pilot, a fuel-optimising system that will allow the crew to reduce REV’s carbon footprint as much as possible.

She will also make use of a high-technology incinerator, which allows on-board waste and ocean plastics to be burnt in an environmentally-positive way with limited emissions.

 Every 10 kilograms of waste burned will generate 110kWh of thermal power, which is used to supply REV with hot water. She will also have a heat recovery system which will generate fresh water through an evaporation plant. 

Other key elements include an energy recovery rudder system, medium-speed engines, a direct drive diesel-electric propulsion system with batteries and an exhaust cleaning system.

Ocean-going capabilities

REV will be capable of complete autonomy at sea for up to 114 days, meaning she can be completely self-sufficient in terms of stock and fuel. 

VARD estimates that she will have a range of 21,120 nautical miles while cruising at 11 knots.

For any research-related charters, she can accommodate 30 crew and 60 research personnel.

All too often the boldest superyacht concepts don’t actually make it to the water. That’s not the case with Njord , though. The epic 948-footer, which was unveiled by Ocean Residences Development (ORD) last year , could hit the seas within the next four years.

Billed as “world’s largest private residence yacht,” Njord will be built at Meyer Werft with a target delivery of 2025, according to a recent announcement . Throughout its two-century run, the German shipyard has delivered around 50 luxury liners and is adept at constructing vessels of such proportions.

Named after the god of the seas and winds in Norse mythology, Njord is practically a lavish high rise primed for clean, ocean adventures. The vessel will be fitted with 117 exclusive residences with between two and six bedrooms each. The pick of the bunch, however, is the 16 duplexes and triplexes that come complete with their own private elevators. Each abode starts at $8 million depending on the size and the cost of ownership maintenance is 5 percent of the purchase price.

Seafarers will have the full run of the onboard amenities, too, which include multiple outdoor terraces, a sundeck, beach club, two outdoor pools, an indoor hydro pool, wellness facilities, a nightclub, jazz lounge and even an observatory. There are also RIBs, toys and tenders for further fun and exploration.

Njord will embark on journeys all across the globe, from Antarctica to the Mediterranean. Better still, it will do so sustainably. The vessel will be built to the “strictest” environmental regulations to minimize its carbon footprint. It will be equipped with state-of-the-art dual-fuel engines, batteries for hybrid operation, heat recovery systems and advanced power management systems.

Furthermore, Njord will feature a professional oceanographic laboratory that will help the scientific and research community tackle climate change and other pressing issues.

The 400-foot-long Kismet embarks on her maiden voyage in the Med

When it comes to the ultimate exclusive enclave, it’s pretty hard to compete with Monaco. The world’s elite flock to the tiny principality on the French Rivera for its sunny weather, sophisticated hotels and casinos, spectacular shopping and other interesting financial reasons. And they love to drive their fast cars down the famous roads leading into the city and they love the speed and power of the legendary Monaco Grand Prix too.

But when it comes to the absolute pinnacle of luxury, it’s impossible to compete with owning a superyacht. And for those select few who happened to be shopping for a superyacht, there’s only one place to see nearly all of the best, and biggest, and the most technologically advanced yachts that money can buy (in addition to the tenders, and limousines, and private submarines, and luxury cars that go along with owning a superyacht) in one place—the Monaco Yacht Show that starts next week.

Renaissance is massive

During the show, the docks of Monaco’s famous port are always filled with numerous yachts that are longer than 250-feet. But this year, the largest superyacht in the show is 400-feet-long! And lots of superyachts in the 300-foot-long range will be there too!

So, if you are lucky enough to be in Monaco later this month, I’ll see you there. But if you not, here’s a sneak peek at the five largest yachts that will be on display.

Kismet underway

What can I say about the 400-foot-long Kismet (that was built by Lürssen , features an exterior design by Nuvolari Lenard and an interior design by Reymond Langton Design and available for charter with Cecil Wright ) that can help you understand just how big a 400-foot-long superyacht is? How about, since it measures 40-feet longer than an American football field (including the end zones!), it’s safe to say that Kismet would only just barely fit inside the Jacksonville Jaguars EverBank Stadium. And that’s only if it could somehow be lowered inside from the top with a crane!

But since these photos and that explanation can’t really convey just how big Shaid Kahn ’s (the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars) new 400-foot-long superyacht is. The only way you’ll really be able to understand just how big the Jacksonville Jaguars owner’s new yacht is to see it for yourself in Monaco next week. It’s going to be largest yacht at the show and has raised the bar on what’s possible when it comes to designing, building, owning and chartering the largest yacht sin the world.

And since Kismet has already spent her first season in the Mediterranean and is available for charter through Cecil Wright (instead of being hidden away for a private owner like many yachts in this size range are), you too could experience what it’s like to live the superyacht life aboard one of the largest and most opulent yachts in the world.

So, if you looking for a charter yacht that costs roughly $3 million per week, the Monaco Yacht Show will be the place where you can see just how opulent Kismet (and theses other superyachts too) for yourself.

Renaissance

The 367-foot-long, 7,200 gross ton, Bannenberg & Rowell -designed Renaissance is um, a “really big superyacht.” But what intrigues me the most is that unlike most superyachts that can only accommodate 12 guests per charter. Renaissance has been designed to swaddle 36 guests in superyacht luxury.

As you’d imagine, Renaissance has it all. Open-air dining on five decks and a dining room with 18-foot-tall ceilings on the main deck. A sushi bar. A pizza oven by the huge pool. And of course, the requisite DJ stations when it’s time to party. There’s also a massive cinema that has seating 19 guests on lower deck that’s the perfect place to just Netflix-n-chill.

The all-new exterior lines of Oceanco H3

I’ve seen lots of new superyacht designs come to life thanks to the hard work, dedication, perseverance and love that the large fraternity of superyacht designers, builders, artists and countless others pour into every spectacular new yacht that gets launched.

The rebuilt Oceanco H3 got a "rockstar" relaunch.

But I must admit, after seeing the 344-foot-long Oceanco -built (and rebuilt) H3 (that was first launched in 2000) emerge after an intensive 3-year-rebuild, I’m at a loss for words. I’m in awe, actually. Because after spending time at Oceanco with the project team and the owner's representative I understand why this project is way more than just a refit.

It’s been transformed into a brand-new yacht with every modern comfort that also retains its…soul.

The sustainability impact of this project is also pretty awe-inspiring to me too. According to Oceanco’s team of engineers, by simply using an existing hull instead of building an brand-new one resulted in a 50% reduction of carbon emissions for the build. And since H3 has been repowered with smaller yet, much more efficient engines (and her top speed has been reduced slightly) the yacht burns much less fuel than she previously did as well. Delivery time was reduced by 25% as well and hope we see more projects take this approach in the future.

The top deck’s helipad forward is a versatile space outside heliops – sun lounge, al fresco yoga studio with wraparound ocean views, a space for elevated entertainment served by the statement bar, assorted lounging areas and dayhead inside. The bridge deck music lounge is designed for acoustic excellence. There is a Steinway baby grand piano and marble-topped bar. Everything you need to know about the world’s largest private residential yacht

Since it was confirmed that residents of The World will return to their home at sea with a new sailing itinerary as of July 2021 , the 196-metre The World will be a super sight for many yacht spotters in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Pacific and Central America. Her 12 decks and contemporary lines by Swedish designers Petter Yran and Bjørn Storbraaten are host to 165 luxury homes for a diverse group of residents from 20 countries.

But what goes on within the world’s largest privately-owned residential yacht and how to get on board are questions asked by many. And so here, BOAT International reveals all.

The onboard community and lifestyle

Owners of homes on The World are said to share common interests such as luxury travel, world-class dining and cultural adventures, which helps to foster a warm and welcoming atmosphere, a sense of community and form lasting friendships. They are adventure seekers and explorers who lead active lifestyles with activities such as hiking, biking, diving, snorkelling, golfing, walking, tennis and cricket able to be arranged by the expert and attentive onboard crew. The elegant megayacht also has an average occupancy of only 150 to 200 at any time, ensuring a tranquil and capacious environment on board.

The residents choose the itinerary

With the help of the megayacht’s captains and an itinerary planning department, the residents collectively determine The World’s itinerary three years in advance by a community vote. The worldwide journeys are based around extended stays with an average of three days in port. Unlike most passenger vessels, The World spends nearly twice as many days in port than at sea, so the residents are able to explore on land as much as possible and still allow some flexibility to the itinerary if needed. In 2022, The World will undertake a journey of five continents that will also include three expeditions: the Tuamotu and Marquesas archipelagos of French Polynesia, a voyage to Polynesia’s eastern extremity visiting the Austral Islands, Pitcairn and Easter Island plus a deep exploration of the fascinating raw beauty of Iceland.

Customised service and bespoke dining

The World offers unrivalled personal service with a highly experienced crew that is customised and catered to every individual preference. A supremely knowledgeable concierge team crafts well-researched, personal travel experiences to explore exciting destinations. In addition to an array of dining venues – from the haute cuisine of Portraits, considered by many to be among the finest restaurants on earth and that welcomes Michelin-starred guest chefs for special events, to Fredy’s Deli Café and gourmet marketplace – residents can also choose to dine at home to take in the ever-changing vistas from the comfort of their own dining room. They can even design a menu in collaboration with one of the yacht’s esteemed chefs with fresh produce purchased at local markets and complemented by selections from the yacht’s award-winning wine list of over 16,000 bottles.

Enrichment and wellness

In addition to talks by world-renowned visiting lecturers, including Nobel prize recipients, a multitude of programmes are available including personalised fitness regimes. One of the most popular places on the yacht, The World’s Fitness Centre, includes inside and open-air areas to work out with state-of-the-art equipment, a jogging/walking track, two swimming pools, and the only regulation-sized tennis court at sea. Residents also enjoy water sports, Hobie cats, kayaks, and other personal watercraft from a retractable marina deck or may choose to improve their swing on the virtual golf simulator or refine their short game on the outdoor putting green. The World Spa & Wellness Center offers 7,000-square-feet of the latest in beauty and wellness treatments like multi-wave LED therapy, an innovative Vichy bed, Cleopatra infrared heated relaxation beds and a multitude of facial, body, hair and nail treatments; it’s the ultimate in pampering and revitalisation.

A unique design story

The 165 privately-owned residences onboard The World comprise studio, one, two and three-bedroom apartments. Many residents have customised homes from the original designs to suit individual tastes and to tell the story of their travels. Walls adorned with private artwork representative of places visited can be found, as well as photographs taken during one of the yacht’s unique expeditions, impressive wine collections that include rare bottles selected from small producers in wine regions visited on The World ’s unending journey.
