Get a Yacht Job in the Caribbean and Bahama Islands

Yacht jobs in the Caribbean have a lot of variety on offer. There many types of vessels sailing this area, and quite understandably so – it is right up there as one of our top 10 picture-perfect places to work. The islands are home to vibrant and healthy marine and coral life, making it popular for scuba diving and snorkelling. Pristine waters, beautiful beaches, tropical forests, volcanic mountains, rustic beach bars and island vibes are just a few of the jewels of the Caribbean.

The Caribbean and Bahamas are very popular for superyachts, especially during the Northern Hemisphere winter months: December – May.  Keep reading if you are interested in sailing one of the most beautiful charters in the world!

What Qualifications Do You Need?

The bare necessities to qualify for work onboard a yacht include:

  • STCW Basic Safety Training course
  • An ENG1 crew medical certificate

Due to the popularity of the Caribbean route, however, we recommend that you seek opportunities to grow your skills and experience, so that you are not a total novice when applying. Besides your Interior Crew Training Course (if you are interested in becoming a steward or stewardess), why not consider additional courses that speak to the activities available in the Caribbean and Bahamas? Think about scuba diving or taking part in a course to learn about the diverse coral and marine life. This will also give you more talking points with guests!

Where to go and When

Vessels generally tend to crew up for the Caribbean season in October and November. Most vessels will base themselves in South Florida, making Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach the most common places for crew to find work. Yachts may hire crew again before crossing to their next seasonal destination, the most popular of which is the Mediterranean in March and April. Keep this in mind, because if you impress on your Caribbean charter, you may get rehired for the Mediterranean trip!

Visa & Legal Requirements

To work on a boat cruising the Caribbean it is advisable to have both a Schengen and B1B2 visa as some of the Islands still fall under European and US dependency. It is also important to have many spare pages in your passport for a Caribbean season, as there is immigration control which requires an entry and exit stamp in your passport for every Island. Speak to us if you’d like to discuss possible courses that could benefit you . Our partner academy is fully ITY & MCA internationally accredited.

If you’d just like to get an idea whether a yacht job is really for you, consider downloading our ultimate yacht crew handbook that will give you the ins and outs of yacht crew life, with additional tips to help you get that job on a private yacht.

Staff member teaching on a sail boat.

Captains at Sail Caribbean live and sail with teenagers aboard 50′ sloops or 43′ catamarans in the British Virgin and Leeward Islands. Along with the Mate onboard, Captains are responsible for leading their students through all aspects of the program including sailing, instruction of curriculum, shipboard life (meals, cleaning, etc.), land activities, time management, and group living. Life onboard is a part of the Sail Caribbean experience that can be the most meaningful for our students. This position is rigorous but very rewarding and requires a strong dedication to the students and the goals of the program. Captains are responsible for the facilitation of group dynamics onboard and planning activities that challenge students. Candidates must be very energetic and enthusiastic about working with teenagers and must have experience doing so. Instructing skills must be outstanding and should be approached with creativity. Large yacht seamanship and coastal cruising are very desirable skills. Captains are also responsible for managing all paperwork associated with the account of daily activities, boat maintenance and repairs, inventory, and student evaluations. • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and mentoring skills
  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude, team-oriented, and a strong work ethic

Other Considerations:

This position is rigorous but very rewarding and requires a strong dedication to our students and the goals of the program. New to Yachting

  • Apr 24, 2016

As the Monaco Yacht Show ends each year, soon follows the close of the Mediterranean cruising season with many yachts choosing to make their way across the Atlantic to the US East Coast for the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Show (FLIBS) at the end of October, and on to the Caribbean for the winter cruising season.

When is the Caribbean Yachting Season?

The Caribbean yachting season runs from late November to May, although the Antigua Charter Yacht Show in early December is generally considered to be the official marker of the start of the Caribbean season. The majority of yachts will arrive in the Caribbean in the first few weeks of December, just time for the Christmas charter period, often using Antigua or St Maarten as their base for the season. The majority of yachts will then begin their crossings back to the Mediterranean in March or April to get ready for the summer cruising season, although some yachts may remain in the Caribbean as late as May.

This means that both October and April are a time of great change for the yachting industry. In October, many of the yachts that have been cruising the Mediterranean begin preparing to make the journey to the US East Coast for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) at the end of the month, and on to the beautiful islands of the Caribbean thereafter. This is, therefore, a key time for those seeking a Caribbean yacht job, as their captains typically begin to hire new crew here in the Med before setting sail. You can find opportunities for the Caribbean yachting season and beyond by keeping an eye on our yacht job vacancies page.

Strategies for Finding A Caribbean Yacht Job

If you're a crew member or crew hopeful currently in the Med, September and October are the peak months to find a Caribbean yacht job for the season. What is your strategy? Are you doing your best to find a yacht to cross on, or are you planning to fly across to Fort Lauderdale to find work?

Without question, we believe that is always best for candidates already in the Med to start their job hunt there, as most yachts tend to crew up before setting sail for the US and Caribbean.

For the best chance of finding a yacht to cross with, join a yacht crew agency like ours, and follow their advice for finding work on a yacht . If it is looking like you might not be able to get seasonal employment before the yachts set sail, you might consider looking instead for a yacht delivery job, as this will give you valuable experience, sea time, and save you an airfare!

If you are not at all successful in finding a Caribbean yacht job in the Med, some crew are granted another chance to find work by flying ahead to Florida. It is however worth noting that many yachts based in Fort Lauderdale will be registered in the US (US flagged), so you will be unable to find work onboard unless you already hold a US passport.

How Can YPI CREW Help You Get a Yacht Job this Caribbean Season?

Here at YPI CREW, our super, superyacht recruiters know exactly which yachts are "crossing the pond' for the Caribbean yachting season, and which are looking for crew. So, before you book that plane ticket, make sure you have spoken to us about all the current options available to you to find work, including yacht deliveries. We can also give you the low-down on the yacht qualifications and visas you'll need to work in the Caribbean.

Already in the States or the Caribbean, or planning to fly there? YPI CREW has a global fleet of yachts on its books, so get in touch with us to find out what exciting opportunities we can offer you.

Working on a Superyacht in The Caribbean

The Caribbean, Bahamas and the United States are very popular regions for superyachts, especially in the winter months (Dec-May), or more specifically outside of the hurricane season.

The Caribbean Sea is a sea of the Atlantic Ocean in the tropics of the Western Hemisphere. It is made up of numerous islands commonly known as the West Indies. The Caribbean islands experience strong trade winds from the East and these islands are therefore regarded as windward and leeward islands. Yacht's Caribbean itineraries tend to include the leeward islands, as they are more protected from these trade winds.

The Bahamas consists of more than 700 islands, cays and islets in the Atlantic Ocean and is situated to the North West of the Caribbean and to the South East of Florida, USA.

The United States of America is a major yachting hub and is synonymous with the marine industry. Like Europe, the USA has a vast marine infrastructure in place; shipyards, marinas and marine services are easy to find and are of a high quality. Florida is the most popular state for boats to be based due to the infrastructure in place with beautiful cays, beaches and waters as well as its proximity to the Bahamas and Caribbean. Fort Lauderdale, in particular, is a very popular place for yacht crew to base themselves and to find jobs.  The West Coast of USA is also a popular yachting hub and base for yachts cruising the North Pacific.

Finding a Job in the Caribbean and USA:

The best time of the year to find a job is either side of the season, directly before or immediately after. Boats generally tend to crew up for the Caribbean season in October/November and they may then hire crew again before crossing to their next seasonal destination, the most popular of which is the Mediterranean which usually occurs in March/April. Most of the vessels will base themselves out of South Florida, making Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach the most common places for crew to find work. It is also important to note that many boats remain in Florida all year round and day/temporary work can be found at any stage during the year.

Cruising in the Caribbean and USA:

The Caribbean is an extremely popular cruising destination in the fall due to its temperate climate. The Caribbean is made up of numerous diverse and beautiful islands. The islands are home to vibrant and healthy marine and coral life, making it popular for scuba diving and snorkelling. Pristine waters, beautiful beaches, tropical forests, volcanic mountains, rustic beach bars and island vibes are just a few of the jewels in the Caribbean crown.

The Caribbean is at its busiest over the Christmas and New Year period. It is very common to book a two-week charter for this period and thousands of yachts will anchor off St. Bart's for New Years eve celebrations. The weather during this period is not great however, with intermittent rain, strong winds (Christmas winds) and rough seas.

Crew members tend to experience a little more time off in the Caribbean (depending on the owner’s preferences) as opposed to the Med. You are most likely to be based in St Maarten for your breaks between guest trips. The island has a lot to offer, but be careful not to fall by the wayside here like so many crew members do. Exploring the beaches, hiking, diving, snorkelling, water sports and beach bars, are just a few of the options available to you.

St Maarten has more marine infrastructure and services in place than other Caribbean islands and is therefore used as a base for most yachts to do their provisioning for trips and order equipment and parts.

As a crew member, the job varies slightly in the Caribbean and Bahamas compared to the Med. The days are shorter and guests tend to start their day earlier. It is common to spend many nights on anchor and cruising between islands. Many of the islands do not have destination marinas and guests prefer to be anchored in beautiful bays off white sand beaches. The environment in the Caribbean is more laid back and it tends to influence the guests. Water sports, beach runs, fishing, diving, hiking and beach bars are the popular activities here. There is often little to go ashore after dark (besides in St Barths) and guests remain on board in the evening. Due to the rougher seas and intermittent rain in the Caribbean, there tends to be more frequent rinsing down and cleaning for the exterior crew.

Cruising in US waters requires special permits and licenses and is more common for US-flagged vessels and boats that are based in the USA. South Florida is a very popular cruising area and popular options include anchoring off South Beach and on sandbars in Miami and cruising the Florida cays.

Large Tender Handling

Off-Season in the United States:

The Caribbean and USA season begins to slow down in March. Many crews are hired on a seasonal basis and their employment contracts will come to an end. Others will prepare to take the vessel to its next seasonal destination and some may remain on board the yacht for a winter yard (maintenance) period. There is often crew turnover during this stage of the year and it is a very good time to find employment.

Superyacht being hauled out for shipyard period with travel lift crane with blue sky

If you are employed full time on a yacht that remains in the US for the summer, your work will vary greatly from the winter months. There is a good chance the boat will be hauled out the water onto the dry dock at some stage as well, possibly for the whole period, depending on the scope of the work to be done. The yacht will be undergoing maintenance and alterations during this period. It is a very busy time for engineers who will focus on scheduled maintenance, attending to breakages and faults that may have occurred during the season and making improvements to onboard machinery and systems. The deck department will focus on maintenance, such as varnishing, polishing, painting, inventories and season orders. Whilst the interior will focus on inventories, stain treatments, ordering, polishing and deep cleaning.

The off-season is also a good time to train and rest crew. It is likely that hours will be 08h00 – 17h00 and that you will have weekends off, provided you are not on watch. The summer months in Florida can be a great experience for the crew (if you can handle the hot and humid weather) as there is a more relaxed atmosphere on board, ‘normal’ work hours are in place and there is generally more downtime. It will also provide deck and engine room crew members with invaluable yard experience which will stand them in good stead for their careers.

Visa and Legal Requirements:

Caribbean : To work on a boat cruising the Caribbean it is advisable to have both a Schengen and B1B2 visa as some of the Islands still fall under European and US dependency. It is also highly advisable to have a MAXI passport or many spare pages in your passport for a Caribbean season as there are immigration controls and entry and exit stamps on your passport for every Island.

US : All non-American crew must hold a B1B2 visa to work onboard a yacht entering US territory. If you are based in the US, you will need to leave and re-enter the US every 6 months (visa run).

It is essential to ensure that you consult with your captain/yacht agent or visa specialists to guarantee that you have the correct visas, are working legally and  know your restrictions.

‘Superyachting’ is a seasonal industry and every owner has their preferences resulting in each yacht having a unique itinerary. The yachting industry is becoming more global and yachts have begun to explore new places, however, there are a few main yachting hubs and territories that are most popular, depending on the season.

Many yachts consider themselves dual season vessels and will cruise in different territories during different times of the year. Other yachts prefer a single season where they crew down and focus on maintenance in their off-season. Some vessels may embark on an around the world trip which may take anywhere up to 2 years.

In any event, I was persuaded to let them negotiate on my behalf while I simultaneously held discussions with other building options. Moran Yacht & Ship understands yachts, their incredibly complex systems, and what constitutes a practical solution to various owners’ ideas. Chef Who Died in Sicily Yacht Sinking ‘Loved’ His Job and Used Money to Help His Parents, Friends Say

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef, was remembered by friends as a role model and a "one-of-a-kind special human being"

Recaldo Thomas/Facebook

Chef Recaldo Thomas is being remembered by loved ones after the cook’s body was discovered near the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily earlier this week.

After being struck by a storm on Monday, Aug. 19, the  Bayesian sank around 5 a.m. local time off the coast of Porticello, the Italian coast guard said in a statement that was previously obtained by PEOPLE.

At the time the yacht sank there were 22 people on board, including 12 passengers and 10 crew.

In the immediate aftermath, 15 people were rescued, according to the coast guard, while a body was retrieved near the vessel and  later identified as Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef.

Rescue officials confirm to PEOPLE that the chef's birth name was Recaldo, but that he also went by Ricardo.

A friend who said she spoke to Thomas “nearly every day” told The Independent that he “was a one-of-a kind special human being.”

“He loved his life, his friends and his job,” she added.

Meanwhile, while speaking with the BBC , a friend of over two decades remembered the chef as somebody young children from Antigua looked up to.

"Personality was very important in his job. The world's richest people want to hang out with someone social. He was sought after," said friend Eli Fuller. "The kids would see all these White people working on yachts. For them to see an Antiguan man traveling all over the world — it was important for our community."

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Meanwhile, Gareth Williams, who had known Thomas for 30 years, said that Thomas lived on the Caribbean island during the yachting off-season and worked in part to help his parents.

"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house," Williams said. "He loved yachting, but he was tired."

Six passengers remained missing after the  Bayesian  went into the water and PEOPLE previously reported that  five bodies have since been found  in the wreckage.

Although Italian authorities have not formally identified the bodies that have been recovered, the missing have previously been identified as  Mike Lynch , a British tech entrepreneur, and  his daughter Hannah , as well as Chairman of Morgan Stanley International  Jonathan Bloomer, his wife, Judy , and New York City-based lawyer  Christopher Morvillo  and his wife, Neda.

Search efforts are ongoing, officials say.

Body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered from yacht wreckage, officials say

P ORTICELLO, Sicily (AP) — The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for . The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout , and sank quickly.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, told the AP in an interview on Thursday that superyachts like these are “designed to be unsinkable."

“And it is unsinkable not only because it is designed in this way, but also because it is a sailing ship and sailing ships are the safest ever,” CEO Giovanni Costantino said.

Costantino added that “obviously they must not hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water,” suggesting the second possibility was the most likely in this case.

Costantino also noted that sailing ships require “a greater competence” to be guided compared with motor boats.

Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed . Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

Besides Hannah Lynch, those missing are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy.

The body of chef Recaldo Thomas was the first to be recovered , on Monday. His death was confirmed by his family.

Friends of Thomas, best known as “Rick,” paid tribute to him on Thursday at a favorite bar in the Caribbean Island of Antigua. Cooking for Lynch was supposed to be one of Thomas' last jobs before retiring, his cousin, David Isaac, told the AP.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies in the yacht’s hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

“It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours,” Cari said.

A superyacht captain shares 3 things people who want to charter a luxury vessel should know

  • Vacationing on a superyacht may sound like it's all Champagne and sunbathing.
  • But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind.
  • Yachting is a summer pastime with risks and nuances for clients and crew.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez soaking up the sun. Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian's wedding . Beyoncé's carefree jump into the ocean.

One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length.

While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian.

For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board.

Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s.

Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel.

Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht.

Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house

One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says.

"The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be."

She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste.

"You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said.

Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said.

"If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active."

Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety

Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety.

"I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said.

Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock.

A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking.

"You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said.

The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel.

The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on.

Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7

"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said.

But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it."

Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea.

"I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go."

Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night."

While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country.

"It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew."

While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."

Tech tycoon, defence attorney, and Morgan Stanley banker among those missing in freak yacht sinking

A superyacht that sank Monday off the Sicilian coast during a storm left at least six people dead and one passenger missing. Among that list is British tech kingpin Mike Lynch and some of his inner circle, who were gathered to celebrate his victory in a long-running legal trial.

Lynch was acquitted in June in a U.S. fraud case and was apparently aboard the Bayesian with some of the people who stood by him throughout the ordeal. Another member of Lynch's legal team who wasn't aboard, Reid Weingarten, said the outing was intended in part as a celebration of the acquittal.

  • Download the CTV News App for breaking news alerts and video on all the top stories

Here's a look at the people who are dead or missing, as well as details on the recent death of an associate of Lynch who was not on the yacht.

Software entrepreneur Mike Lynch, along with his daughter, Hannah, are among those that police divers are searching for after the yacht was struck by a waterspout off of Porticello, near Palermo.

A spokesperson for Lynch said there were no updates Tuesday.

Lynch had been trying to move past a Silicon Valley debacle that had tarnished his legacy as an icon of British ingenuity.

A Cambridge-educated mathematician, Lynch made his mark with Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly. Autonomy’s steady growth in its first decade resulted in Lynch being dubbed Britain’s Bill Gates and earning him one of the U.K’s highest honors, the Office of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2006.

Lynch, 59, sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011. But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of cooking the books to make the sale.

The fraud allegations resulting in Lynch being fired by HP’s then-CEO Meg Whitman and a decade-long legal battle. It culminated with him being extradited from the U.K. to face criminal charges of masterminding a multibillion-dollar fraud.

Lynch steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP’s own bungling — a position he maintained while testifying before a jury during a 2 1/2 month trial in San Francisco earlier this year. U.S. Justice Department prosecutors called more than 30 witnesses in an attempt to prove their allegations against Lynch.

Lynch was vindicated at trial in June after being cleared of all charges. Lynch pledged to return to the U.K. and explore new ways to innovate.

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil cased in London that HP mostly won in 2022. Damages haven’t been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

Lynch later went on to set up technology investment firm Invoke Capital.

Christopher Morvillo

One of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of the firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda were also on the yacht and are among those unaccounted for.

Morvillo is regarded as an elite defense attorney specializing in fraud and corruption cases. He was previously a federal prosecutor in New York who worked on the criminal investigation of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. His father, Robert Morvillo, was also a lawyer who represented high-profile clients, including Martha Stewart.

In a LinkedIn post soon after Lynch's acquittal, Morvillo paid tribute to the team of lawyers who worked on the case and also his wife and two daughters.

“None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home,” he wrote. The post ended with the words: “And they all lived happily ever after….”

In a legal podcast released last week, Morvillo recounted his involvement with Lynch's case, starting from when his firm was hired in November 2012.

He flew to London to meet Lynch on Thanksgiving weekend that year and assumed he would be gone for a week, Morvillo told the For the Defense podcast. Instead, Morvillo said he “spent a significant portion of the rest of my life bouncing back and forth between London and New York.”

The case has “covered one third of my career,” he said. “It has been a constant presence in my life for the last 12 years.”

Clifford Chance said it was “in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident” and that its thoughts are with Morvillo and his wife. “Our utmost priority is providing support to the family,” the firm said.

Jonathan Bloomer

The chairman of Morgan Stanley's London-based investment banking subsidiary, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife, Judy, were also among the yacht's missing.

Bloomer is non-executive chairman of both Morgan Stanley International, which covers markets outside the U.S., and the Hiscox Group, an insurer that does business on the Lloyd’s of London insurance marketplace.

Lynch appointed Bloomer to Autonomy’s board of directors in 2010, where he served as chairman of the audit committee at the time of the HP deal. Bloomer testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial.

Both Morgan Stanley and Hiscox said they were “deeply shocked and saddened" by the tragedy.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular the Bloomer family, as we all wait for further news from this terrible situation," the bank said.

Aki Hussain, the group chief executive of Hiscox, said "our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

Stephen Chamberlain

In a strange coincidence, another former Autonomy executive who was acquitted alongside Lynch of the fraud charges died days before the sinking of the Bayesian.

Stephen Chamberlain “was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out running,” his lawyer Gary Lincenberg said in a statement.

Chamberlain, formerly a vice-president of finance at the company, was accused of artificially inflating Autonomy’s revenues and making false and misleading statements to auditors, analysts and regulators.

He stood trial with Lynch, and was also found not guilty.

“He was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity. We deeply miss him," Lincenberg said. “Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family.”

Chamberlain “was a much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend," his family said in statement released through Cambridgeshire Police. “He was an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible."

Police said the driver, a 49-year-old woman, remained at the scene in the village of Stretham, England, and was assisting with the investigation.

Recaldo Thomas

The chef with Antiguan roots was the first confirmed death from the accident. Cooking for Lynch was supposed to be one of his last jobs before retiring, his cousin, David Isaac, told The Associated Press.

Thomas was born in Canada but he would visit his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, moving permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s.

“He was a free spirit,” Isaac recalled. “Nothing rattled him. I’ve never seen him upset.”

Upon moving to Antigua, Thomas, best known as “Rick,” started working as a bartender in Jolly Harbor so he could be close to the sea, his second love after cooking, Isaac said.

Thomas also picked up jobs on small boats and eventually went to culinary school and started working on bigger ships.

  • Read more of the latest international headlines

Isaac recalled how Thomas would be gone for several months at a time and then unexpectedly show up in Antigua between jobs.

“This particular incident was hard,” Isaac said. “He was just ready to tie up the end of his journey in his career."

Isaac recalled Thomas’ “big, infectious” laugh and said he found some solace in that “Rick did exactly what he was meant to do and what he loved doing.”

Five bodies found in sunken superyacht, officials say

Divers have found five bodies in the sunken wreckage of a superyacht that sank off Sicily this week, Italian officials told news agencies and local media Wednesday, leaving one person still missing.

Three bodies were brought ashore and two others were also found inside the shipwreck, Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, told the Associated Press, after divers were photographed by the agency unloading body bags. Cocina did not identify the deceased.

The British-flagged, 183-foot-long Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew members roughly half a mile from the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello when it encountered what authorities called a “violent storm” about 4 a.m. Monday.

Of the 15 people rescued, eight – including a 1-year-old girl – were taken to hospitals in conditions that were not life-threatening. The body of the yacht’s chef, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was found during initial recovery efforts.

Among the passengers was Mike Lynch, 59, the British founder of the tech venture capital firm Invoke Capital and co-founder of the tech firms Autonomy and Darktrace. This summer, he was acquitted of all charges after a decadelong U.S. fraud trial related to the 2011 sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

The voyage on the Bayesian, owned by a company controlled by Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was intended to be a celebration of his legal victory, Britain’s Telegraph reported.

Among those missing were Lynch; his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and attorney Chris Morvillo, a partner at Clifford Chance in New York who represented Lynch in the recently concluded legal battle, and his wife, Neda. Bacares, Lynch’s wife, was among the survivors.

It’s not clear exactly what type of storm struck the Bayesian, but weather data suggests it was probably a tornadic waterspout or severe thunderstorm.

Charlotte Golunski, a guest of Lynch who was rescued, described to Italian media holding onto her 1-year-old daughter, Sophie, amid the storm. “For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea,” she told Giornale di Sicilia. “Then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves.”

Lynch sold Autonomy, which was once England’s biggest software company, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for more than $11 billion. He was subsequently accused of overvaluing the company and was charged in the United States with fraud. He was acquitted in June.

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian shipmaker Perini Navi, according to the SuperYacht Times.

The Sir Robert, a Dutch-flagged sailing vessel anchored nearby, responded immediately to help survivors before the Italian coast guard arrived.

The yacht sank to a depth of more than 160 feet. The first attempt by fire-brigade cave divers to search inside the yacht was unsuccessful, rescue authorities said.

Bryan Pietsch contributed to this report.
