Croatia Island Hopping Tour

8 Days / 7 Nights

Croatia Cruise in Style with Family and Friends

Join Ker & Downey on an exclusive Luxury Croatia Island Hopping Tour. Discover Croatian hidden gems via a weeklong luxury yacht charter in Croatia through the Dalmatian Islands. From Brač to Mljet, there is simply nothing like exploring Croatia by private yacht with the ones you love.

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

First begin your luxury yacht charter in Croatia on Brač island, the biggest island in Dalmatia. You will dock near the Golden Horn Beach in Bol, perhaps the best known and most beautiful beach in Croatia. After a celebratory first dinner with the crew, spend the next day exploring the island by e-bike. Climb your way to the top of the Vidova Gora mountain, the highest peak of the Adriatic Sea. Indeed, it offers not only the best views over the island and the Adriatic Sea, but also beautiful nature and a great biking trail sheltered by black pines. The day then ends with a private olive oil tasting experience.

Next, continue your Croatia island hopping tour on Hvar, an ancient town with a rich history on the island with the same name. Begin your explorations by hiking up to Fortica fortress for stunning views over the city. Mingle in the town center and discover one of the most beautiful squares in Dalmatia: St. Stephen’s Square. A visit to Hvar would not be complete without a wine tour. Therefore, embark on a private half-day tour through the centuries-old vineyards on the island. Along the way, pass through the old villages of Brusje and Velo Grablje as well as many lavender fields. In Jelsa, stop at the Duboković winery for a taste of Croatian wine Medvid, local cheese, and homemade bread in the winemakers’ family house. You’ll also be able to enjoy the family’s own flavored olive oils.

After 1945, Vis Island became a major military base for the Yugoslav army. As such, there are more than 30 military sites around the island. Find out why Vis was called the “key of the Adriatic” on a private jeep tour. After departing from Vis Town, visit Tito’s cave, the island’s highest peak at Hum, the former air force airport, and the cricket field in Pliskopoje. You will also stop at the George III fort, the former military base of Parja, and the submarine tunnel “Jastog” (Lobster).

Korčula  Island  is undoubtedly an essential stop on any  Croatia island hopping tour.   While here, explore the island with a private guide on a half-day tour. Indeed, your first stop comes after no more than five minutes at one of the region’s top honey producers. Here you will learn how honey gets from the beehives to jars, followed by honey tasting. Then head to Lumbarda to taste one of Korčula’s most famous products: wine. The winery you will visit produces the acclaimed and little known (outside of Croatia) white wine, Grk. Hosted at the home of your jovial hosts, you will have the chance to pair your wine tasting with an array of tasty homemade Dalmatian snacks. Later, head to a local restaurant for dinner where you will learn how to prepare the traditional local dish ‘peka.’

Your private yacht will then   whisk  you away to  the most beautiful and most forested island in the Adriatic: Mljet Island. This is an island of untouched nature, olive groves, vineyards, rich forests, and diverse flora and fauna. Enjoy the pristine beauty of the natural surroundings on a private e-biking tour of Mljet National Park. Indeed, e-bikes are the best way to explore the island, as only bikes are allowed around the lakes.

Finally, your luxury yacht charter in Croatia will anchor in Dubrovnik on your final day. For a completely different experience, we recommend embarking   on private buggy safari outside the city. Your buggy safari will take you through some fantastic landscapes, cruising through pristine countryside, pine forests, and rural settlements. Halfway through, stop in Čilipi to visit some of the town’s monuments. Then continue riding over green hills and climbing the highest peaks of Konavle’s rocky coastline while marveling at the amazing Adriatic Sea on one side and the mountains on the other. Upon your return, recover from this exciting trip with fresh fruits and drinks. Your final farewell is one to remember: a private dinner within the walls of Dubrovnik. This is an exclusive experience that allows you and your loved ones to have the walls of Dubrovnik all to yourselves. It will no doubt be a dinner that will remain as one of the warmest memories in your life.

10 things to do on a yacht charter during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival

Dalmatia Region

This is one of the most popular regions for yacht charters in Croatia. Located on the southern coast, its made up of 233 miles of coastline, islands, and reefs, and includes the must-see historic towns of Split and Dubrovnik , as well as hundreds of stunning verdant islands and national parks.

Croatia's second-largest city – its "crown jewel',  Split  has a history dating back to the 4th century. It is also home to the beautiful Roman  Diocletian's Palace , a top recommended destination for your tour.

Split also boasts some of Croatia's largest marinas, and is within shooting distance of the celebrated islands of Korčula , Hvar , Vis, and Brač . Visit the world-famous Zlatni Rat beach on Brač's southern side, or sample the vibrant nightlife and clubbing scene on Hvar, which also plays host to several regattas over the summer season. Further south is  Dubrovnik,  a UNESCO World Heritage site of huge architectural prominence.

Istria Region

Located in the north of Croatia, this region has a distinctly Italian feel to it, and has plenty of fantastic places to visit. Pula, the region's capital, is crammed with museums, which isn't surprising given its history that dates back to 3,000BC.

Across the water, lies the Brijuni National Park , a group of 14 small picturesque islands easily accesible from the mainland. Slightly to the north, the beautiful old fishing port of Rovinj is also well-worth a visit, with its steep cobbled streets and charming piazzas.

Travel south to historic Zadar , where you can enjoy a quiet walk along marbled streets and pine-scented beaches. Further south you will find the Kornati archipelago , a group of 100 or so relatively barren islands and reefs which are perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

Croatia’s stunning coastline and idyllic verdant islands have made it one of the most popular regions for Mediterranean yacht charters . To truly experience the magic of this country, here are our tips on the places you must check out when you charter a yacht in Croatia.

Don't Miss:

  • Game of Thrones tour - through parts of Old Town, Dubrovnik where some of the most memorable scenes were filmed.
  • Dubrovnik Summer Festival  - see dramas, plays, classical music concerts and much more.
  • 360˚ Dubrovnik - Michelin-starred restaurant built into the walls of the old town, with exquisite views over the harbour.
  • Diocletian’s Palace  - UNESCO site within the walls of Split’s historic and thriving town.
  • Franciscan Monastery - Visit Hvar’s 15th-century monastery and museum that overlooks a shady cove, and meander charming gardens that feature a 300-year old cypress tree.
  • Plitvice Lakes National Park - one of the oldest and largest national parks in Croatia.
  • Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) - located on the southern coast of Brač, regularly listed as one of the top beaches in Europe.
  • Blue Grotto, Bisevo - situated in the central Dalmatian archipelago, this waterlogged sea cave has an intriguing glowing blue light that appears at certain times of the day.
  • Pula Arena - one of the world’s six largest Roman amphitheatres, and certainly it’s most well-preserved.
  • Visovac Monastery - situated on a tiny island in the Krka National Park.
  • Mljet National Park tour - takes guests to the area of the first protected ecosystem in the Adriatic.

Avid island-hoppers seeking solitude love a Croatia yacht charter itinerary. Of approximately 1,185 islands just 66 are inhabited, making the unfettered beauty of its isles, inlets and bays ripe for exploration. Among these wonderful islands to explore are the verdant gems of  Hvar , Vis, Korčula , and Brač.

But yacht rentals in Croatia are also ideal for guests seeking impressive designer shopping, exquisite wineries and glittering nightlife in its main cities.

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

Culminating from Illyrian, Roman, Venetian, Christian, and Austrian empires all competing for Croatia’s ownership, Croatia is home to an astoundingly rich cultural heritage. This makes for a fabulous yacht charter: from the Venetian palaces and designer boutiques of the jet-set haven of Hvar; to the Benedictine beauty of the UNESCO-listed walled city of Dubrovnik; to the Italian infused architecture and cosmopolitan ambiance of Pula and beyond.

As one of the most popular destinations for yacht charters in the East Mediterranean , there should be plenty to choose from when it comes to luxury yachts for charter in Croatia. If you’re unsure about whether you want to book a motor yacht or a sailing yacht for your Croatian getaway, there are a few things you should consider first.

Motor Yacht Charters in Croatia

Whether you are interested in a small or large motor yacht, or somewhere in between, you should find a Croatia luxury charter that will more than meet your expectations. With a luxury motor yacht you can truly relax; soaking up the stunning scenery, or scuba diving reefs and wrecks under clear aqua waters, or taking a tender ashore to explore ancient Roman palaces and monasteries, as well as sampling the local cuisine and wines.

You should note that berth/slip options in Croatia for larger yachts (over 50m) are limited, however, with plenty of safe and tranquil anchorage spots to choose from amongst the numerous islands, islets, and reefs around this Adriatic hotspot you will be spoilt for choice.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Croatia

The Adriatic enjoys an average of 315 cloudless days a year, and with winds in Croatia generally around 10-20 knots, this can make chartering a sailing yacht a great option to explore the picturesque islands and secluded beaches at your leisure. The winds do tend to get stronger in the fall, so bear this in mind when booking your charter.

There should be ample sailing yachts, gulets (traditional wooden yachts), and catamarans for charter in Croatia, but we do recommend booking early to secure your perfect yacht and desired itinerary.

Gulet Charters in Croatia

Gulets are traditional wooden boats originating from Turkey , but are now widely available throughout Croatia and Greece . These types of boats offer a fantastic and cost-effective alternative to a luxury charter yacht, for those wishing to spend a bit less but still enjoy a fabulous yacht charter in the Mediterranean .

With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget in Croatia. The average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in Croatia are as follows;

  • For motor yacht rentals in Croatia, prices can range from $32,000 to $1,8m per week plus expenses
  • For luxury sailing yacht rentals in Croatia, prices can go from $32,363 to $582,882 weekly plus expenses

Child playing in the sea during a yacht charter in Croatia

The optimal times for yacht charters in Croatia’s sapphire-hued waters span from May till October. During this time, you can benefit from calmer seas, reliably clement weather, and warm swimming temperatures. Croatia’s peak season is July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and packed marinas in these months.

There are a variety of options, although most yachts charters tend to begin in Dubrovnik or Split in the Dalmatia region, both of which have major international transport links. Another popular option is to set off from Italy or Montenegro and then cruise the Adriatic down towards the Kornati a rchipelago or along the Dalmatia region – encompassing 233 miles of coastline stretching from Krk to Lastovo .

Croatia has numerous must-see destinations and you will be hard-pushed to fit them all in. For itineraries along the southern Dalmatian coast, some yachts may spend a day in port in Dubrovnik – ‘the pearl of the Adriatic’ – before setting off for the picturesque surrounding archipelagos, which include the popular island destinations of Hvar , Mljet, Vis, and Brač . You can either finish your yacht charter back in Dubrovnik or continue on to finish up in Split – the cultural and economic center of Dalmatia.

For yacht charters in the north of Croatia, many like to begin in Venice or Bari, located in Italy’s Puglia (or Apulia) region, before crossing the Adriatic to Croatia's Istria region. From here you can explore the popular island of Pula , with its world-class Roman amphitheater, before cruising down towards Zadar and the Kornati National Park .

Alternatively, you can begin in Porto Montenegro – only an hour’s drive from Dubrovnik – although you may have to cover the cost of repositioning as many luxury charter yachts in Croatia are based in Split.

It’s simple enough to begin your superyacht vacation in a neighboring country before heading to Croatia. For more advice please speak to your yacht charter broker .

sample itineraries

We recommend finishing your luxury charter in Split, Croatia's second-largest city and one of the most popular superyacht hotspots on the Adriatic. Renowned for its pristine beaches and crystalline waters, plus with a vibrant mix of things to see and do, you'll be in for a treat.

Glittering blue marina in Croatia

There are hundreds of harbors, marinas, and ports in Croatia, so whether stopping off in Dubrovnik or sailing to the far side of the Lastovo Archipelago National Park there are sure to be facilities or an anchorage to suit your needs.

There are 56 official marinas along the Croatian coast from Umag to Dubrovnik. Some of out top picks include;

  • ACI Marina Dubrovnik – located within a short distance to Dubrovnik’s historic old town. It has 380 slips and can accommodate yachts up to 60m/196ft. For larger yachts, or yachts not requiring a slip, another popular option is to utilize the international cruise ship terminal quay, which is happy to facilitate yacht charter pick-ups and drop-offs.
  • ACI Marina Korčula – ideal for a stop off at one of the many island destinations on your yacht charter, we recommend this sheltered marine, which accommodates yachts up to a maximum LOA of 40m/131ft.
  • Lumbarda Marina – also on Korčula this marina has slips catering to yachts up to a max length of 25m/82ft.
  • ACI Marina Vrboska – located in the celebrated islnad of Hvar, this marina offers berths for yachts up to a max length of 30m/98ft.
  • Cavtat Marina – If you're struggling to find a slip in the summer, we recommend this marina, which is located to the south of Dubrovnik and enjoys good shelter from all winds. It offers 119 slips for yachts up to a max LOA of 60m/197ft.

Some of the best ports in Croatia are also located in the Istria region in northern Croatia. We recommend;

  • D-Marin Dalmacija – located a few kilometers south of the ancient city of Zadar, which is the largest marina in Croatia with 1,200 berths and can accommodate yachts up to 80m LOA.
  • ACI Marina Rovinj – catering for yachts with a LOA of up to 25m/82ft
  • Marina Funtana – max length 20m/65ft.

For larger berths in the Split-Dalmatia region:

  • ACI Marina Split –  located in the heart of Croatia's "jewel" this marina has recently been modernised, offering great shopping, dining, fuelling and repair services to name but a few, alongside 318 protected berths that can accommodate superyachts up to 90m LOA.
  • Marina Kastela – just 7km up the coast from Split – which can accommodate superyachts of up 150m/492ft in length, with a draft of 8m.
  • D-Marin Mandalina – located in the city of Šibenik, situated between two National Parks within a protected lagoon, this marina boasts 429 slips, and has also been specially developed to accommodate yachts of up to 140m/459ft LOA.

Dubrovnik's glittering blue waters and old port

With its rich cultural and architectural history, along with lush national parks and secluded beaches, Croatia is fast becoming one of our most popular destinations. Therefore, we advise you to book your yacht charter well in advance of your trip to secure your perfect yacht on your preferred dates.

If you leave it too late, the selection of yachts at your disposal will be reduced and you may not be able to explore the destinations you have your heart set on. Plus, finding dates when everyone in your charter party is available can be tricky; the longer you leave it, the more challenging it will be.

Your yacht charter broker will also need plenty of time to tailor an itinerary to suit you, and enough time to book ahead for the nights you wish to spend in marinas. We recommend booking up to 3 months in advance to give your broker the optimum time to organise everything down to the last detail.

Croatia Yacht Charter Q&A

Some important things to consider before booking your yacht;

  • Yachts tend to spend more time at anchor in Croatia, so you need to consider that when choosing your perfect yacht. Ideally, find a yacht that is comfortable with ample leisure and entertainment facilities onboard.
  • Avoid heading into Dubrovnik when the big cruise ships are in town, these vessels can hold some 3,000 passengers and the town can become uncomfortably crowded.
  • You should also be aware that certain zones in Croatia's waters forbid fishing or diving, or require special permissions to do so. This is something you can discuss with your yacht broker, or yacht captain when deciding on your itinerary.

There should be a wide selection of yachts to choose from, so there is sure to be something that suits both you and your budget.

Croatian Gulets, traditional wooden yachts with wide beams that offer spacious deck areas and generous accommodation, are a fantastic and cost-effective alternative to a luxury charter yacht. Gulets are available to charter for around €13,500-€15,000 per week, which usually includes food and up to 4 hours cruising per day.

Gulets are also perfect for family charters, or those who simply enjoy spending their time out on deck soaking up the beautiful surroundings of this stunning region.

Why not visit our yacht charter fleet page for a comprehensive look at all yachts available for charter around Croatia.

Alternatively, you can reach out to your preferred yacht broker , who will be sure to help you find your perfect yacht and itinerary around the dates that suit both you and your guests.

The perfect time for yacht charters in Croatia is between May to October, with average temperatures in the mid to high 20s, calm sapphire seas and endless days of glorious sunshine.

You should note that Croatia's peak season is in July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and crowded marinas during these months.

Most charters tend to begin in the beautiful historic towns of Dubrovnik or Split before continuing on to the celebrated islands of Hvar, Mljet, Vis and Brač. Alternatively, you can begin in Montenegro in the south, but you should note there may be additional re-positioning fees to pay as most yachts are based out of Split.

Another option is to begin your yacht charter in Venice, Italy then cross the Adriatic to Croatia's breathtaking northern region before cruising down the coast to Zadar or Split.

Once you have decided on your perfect yacht, your yacht broker will then draw up the necessary contract; a legally binding agreement between you and the owner of the yacht. At this point, based on the type of contract, you will be required to pay 50% of the cost of the yacht up front, with an additional 25-30% of this base rate to cover additional expenses you and your guests are expected to incur whilst on charter.

For more information about the costs of chartering a yacht, please read our helpful guide:  Yacht Charter Costs Explained , which describes the fee structure in more detail.

After lunch, we will make our way toward our final destination, Kotor. Here you will have an opportunity to enjoy this town’s beauties and historical heritage with an optional tour guide. Following our stop in the town of Kotor, we will return back towards Dubrovnik and once again admire the bay of Kotor, the art of nature in its full expression.

The Ultimate Guide to Island Hopping in Croatia

Croatia’s Dalmatian coast is a dream destination with over 1200 islands dotting the crystal clear azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. The hidden coves, small fishing villages, medieval-style cities, calm blue waters and beautiful sunsets make it one of Europe’s most sought after summer destinations.

The best way to explore these stunning islands and appreciate the incredible beauty of Croatia’s Adriatic coast is to take your time visiting many of the islands on your trip. Island hopping in Croatia has become one of the best things to do in the country and a completely relaxing way to discover this beautiful part of the country.

After spending two weeks sailing along the Dalmatian coast, we have put together this Croatia island hopping guide. It will help you plan your perfect trip to the Dalmatian coast and provide some summer travel inspiration.

Why go to Croatia’s coast

Croatia’s coast is its biggest drawcard. Its stunning medieval coastal cities like Dubrovnik and countless islands surrounded by clear blue water, make it the ultimate European summer escape. Croatia’s coast sees millions of tourists every year, with Dubrovnik, Split, and islands like Hvar soaring in popularity in recent years.

However, despite the crowds, Croatia’s coastline is still worth a visit, especially if you plan on taking a sailing trip. Most people can’t help but fall in love with the Croatian coast after exploring some of its Adriatic islands.

How to island-hop in Croatia

Depending on your budget, travel style and time constraints, there’s an island-hopping Croatia itinerary and mode of transport for everyone. From the local ferry system to chartering a private boat, you can tailor a Croatian island hopping holiday to suit your own style and needs.

The ferry system in Croatia is surprisingly easy to navigate and quite affordable. You can buy tickets as foot passengers or it’s also possible to take a car with you to some of the islands. Travelling by one of the car ferries is a particularly good idea if you’ve rented a car in Croatia and plan on visiting the larger islands.

The ferries are generally very comfortable, with free Wi-Fi, a bar and even a restaurant available on larger services. Ferry services double and even triple from June until the end of August to cater for the greater demand in the summer. You can even purchase tickets on the same day that you plan on traveling, but it’s best to check schedules and routes on companies’ websites beforehand.   Jadrolinija   is one of the most popular and larger companies servicing the Croatian islands, but there are many other options too.

island hopping in croatia

Croatia island hopping tours are extremely popular. They generally follow a standard island-hopping itinerary starting in Split , although there are also options starting in Dubrovnik. The most popular trips are generally a 7-day Croatian island hopping tour that stops in popular islands like Hvar and Korcula. But there are also alternative tours available stopping in lesser-known spots with up to 2 weeks of sailing time if you prefer.

Deciding on a Croatia island tour really depends on your budget as well as your travel style.

There are catamaran or yacht cruises that cater to a younger, backpacking crowd and are usually more party tours for people aged up to 35.  Medsailors  and  Contiki  are some of the most popular Croatia sailing companies that offer these types of tours.

There are also mid-sized cruises and catamarans that can cater to all different travelers. Companies often match like-minded people in the same tour groups and have designated tour itineraries catering to different travel styles and budgets. Sail Croatia  is one of the most popular Croatia island hopping tour operators and they have a variety of options.

Rent or charter your own boat

If you’d prefer to have more control over your Croatian island tour, then you can rent or charter your own boat. There is a range of different options from small to large sailboats, catamarans, and yachts. You can also choose to either have a captain and crew or not, depending on your sailing experience.

Prices can vary depending on the boat and whether you decide to have a crew. Most prices are also quoted just for the boat, and you have to ensure you factor in food, port fees, and captain and crew tips.

Best time to go

The best time to island hop in Croatia is in the warmer summer months. Although you can technically visit the coastline all year round, it’s only between May and September that the sea warms up and the ferry services are more frequent.

The most popular months to visit the islands of Croatia are July and August. This is the typical high season, meaning it can be an extremely busy and crowded time. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, it’s best to visit either side of these months such as in June or September.

Many restaurants, bars, and clubs on islands in Croatia do close past September, so we do not recommend an island hopper trip in the fall.

Best Islands in Croatia

It’s hard to decide on the best islands to visit in Croatia. There are over 1200 to choose from. However, there are certainly more popular islands such as Hvar and Brac, with many of the Croatia island tours heading to the same few places. However, these Croatian Islands are popular for good reason, as they are generally some of the most lively and beautiful of the islands.

There are also some lesser-known spots that are worth your time if you have a flexible itinerary.

These are the best Croatian islands to visit

Brac is the third largest of Croatia’s islands and a popular day trip destination from Split. It’s a great idea to hire a car or scooter on Brac, as it makes it easier to move around and explore the sights. Although it’s close to the mainland, it still feels less tourist-oriented than Hvar and makes for a nice alternative for a day trip or the first stop on your Split to Dubrovnik island hopping trip.

Main attractions on the island:

  • Visit the famous Zlatni Rat Beach known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia
  • On the other side of the island, explore Pucisca , a beautiful coastal village
  • The main town of Bol is worth your time with some of the best restaurants on the island

island hopping in croatia

The magical island of Mljet is not far off the coast of Dubrovnik and is best known for its natural beauty. A large part of the island is made up of the Mljet National Park, which has plenty of trails that you can walk and cycle along. It’s often visited as a day trip from Dubrovnik or a brief stop on the island-hopping Croatia route.

  • Hike down to the  Odysseus Cave , an incredibly beautiful spot and one of our favorite things to do in Croatia
  • Visit the  Veliko and Malo Jezero salt lakes , one of which has a 12th-century monastery in the middle

island hopping in croatia

Korcula is one of the larger islands in Croatia. However, it’s more relaxed and feels much less crowded than the more popular Hvar and Brac. It’s often one of the people’s favourite islands, with its charming old town and laid-back attitude. It’s famous for being the birthplace of Marco Polo, although the evidence of this is very questionable!

  • Explore the historic  Old Town  on the northeastern tip of the island
  • Pupnatska Luka  is widely considered the best beach on the island located on the south side
  • Known for its quality white wine, it’s worth taking a  wine tour  or at least visiting some local wineries to sample the region’s best

Top Things to do in Croatia & Destinations to Visit

Hvar is one of the most popular and well-known islands of the Adriatic Sea. Despite its popularity, you should still add Hvar Island to any Croatia island-hop itinerary. It’s a large island with a number of towns to explore, nearby islands to visit, beautiful beaches, and very lively nightlife.

  • Hang out in  Hvar Town , the main town on the island and the most fun place to be at night
  • Hvar fortress  is a must-visit with incredible views over the town and sea
  • Visit the beaches of  Dubovica  and  Pokonji Dol , both a short distance from Hvar Town
  • Take a day to explore the  Pakleni Islands , a short water taxi away from Hvar Island

Vis has a much more remote vibe and is a great island to visit on your Croatian island tour. It’s the farthest inhabited island from the mainland and was closed to tourists until 1989, as it was used as a former Yugoslav military base. Vis Island is far less developed than some of the other built-up islands, but this is kind of its charm.

  • Stay the night in the charming fishing village of  Komiza
  • Visit  Stiniva Beach , regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Europe
  • Take a trip to the  Green and Blue sea caves  off the coast of Vis

island hopping in croatia

Pag is one of the largest inhabited islands in Croatia and is accessible by a motorable bridge. This makes it a popular place to visit on a day trip. It’s located north of Zadar and can be reached by less than an hour’s drive from the city. The island is most famous for its party and nightlife and there are often festivals taking place on the island in summer.

  • Zrce Beach is the best-known party beach and often hosts summer festivals
  • The main town also known as  Pag  is worth spending some time in for its delicious food

island hopping in croatia

Rab is located just north of Pag Island and is just a short ferry ride across the water. It is known for its sandy beaches and pine forests in the southwest, which are contrasted by the windswept and barren northeast coast. Although it still sees a number of visitors in summer, exploring the island still feels like a real discovery.

  • Rajska Beach is considered the nicest beach on the island
  • Check out the  Old Town which is dominated by four church bell towers high above the roofline

island hopping in croatia

Krk is the largest Croatian island located in the northern Adriatic Sea. It’s also one of the most accessible with a toll bridge connecting it to the mainland. In summer, it’s often extremely busy with Europeans, as it’s the first island when approaching from central Europe. It’s not known for its stunning beauty, but its landscape is quite varied and there are numerous picturesque towns to visit.

  • Vrbnik is a charming village on the opposite coast to Krk town that is far less quieter than others
  • The main  town of Krk has incredible architectural wonders such as the 5th-century cathedral and the Frankopan Castle
  • The southeastern side of the island toward Stara Baska  is far less visited and is blessed with rugged terrain but incredibly beautiful beaches

Krk Bridge

Lokrum

Located a short ferry ride from Dubrovnik, Lokrum Island is perfect as a final stop on your island hopping tour, or as a destination for a day trip from the mainland. It’s one of Croatia’s uninhabited islands and is a designated nature reserve. So, there aren’t many amenities but there’s plenty to do and see.

  • The  Dead Sea  is a small, shallow saltwater lake that is open to swimmers
  • Benedictine monastery  ruins and a historic palace are highlights for history buffs, and their botanical gardens are gorgeous
  • Game of Thrones fans will appreciate the  Iron Throne  replica, located in Lokrum’s visitor’s center. Visitors can take photos on the throne and learn about filming that took place on the island.

Other stops:

Dubrovnik is considered the pearl of the Adriatic in the far south of Croatia. Despite being surrounded by a lot of hype, it’s one place that does live up to its reputation. This medieval-style walled city has become famous for being used as a set for some episodes of Game of Thrones and it sees million visitors every year. However, the incredibly picturesque city is worth some of your time, despite the crowds. The UNESCO-listed Old Town is full of beautiful architecture and the view from the city walls is some of the best you’ll find on the Croatian mainland.

Island hopping from Dubrovnik is an alternative option to the common Croatia island-hopping route. Otherwise, most island-hopping tours end in Dubrovnik.

Europe Croatia Dubrovnik OM 3155 scaled

Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and the largest on the Dalmatia Coast. Most people start their Croatia island hopping cruise or tour from Split. However, it’s worth sticking around and spending time in the city itself with plenty to explore. It’s home to the incredibly beautiful  Diocletian Palace , one of the most complete architectural wonders in the country. It was by far one of   our favourite things to do in Croatia .

Croatia Split 3417

Sibenik is a beautiful coastal city just 1.5 hours north of Split. It’s the third-largest city along the coast and yet it remains fairly unknown amongst most travelers. Sibenik is the main gateway for the  Krka National Park , but it’s worth spending some time in the city if you can. Its biggest attraction is the  Cathedral of St James , a UNESCO World Heritage Listed site.

Croatia Sibenik 3487

Zadar, like the other Dalmatian cities, is known for its spectacular  old town and city walls with a number of ruins and original architecture dating back to the 9th century. However, Zadar is far less popular than Dubrovnik and Split. It can be a great place to explore away from the crowds.

It’s a good alternative base to start your island-hopping, with great ferry connections to the islands around the central coastal area.

Stay: 13 nights, MV Lady Eleganza

Dubrovnik Old Town as the sun sets

Dubrovnik, Kotor

Explore Dubrovnik's World Heritage-listed Old Town in the morning. Wander past the palaces, monasteries and churches all enclosed within the medieval city walls. Later, you weigh anchor and enjoy views of the memorable setting as you sail towards Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor. Sailing into the bay, framed by sheer cliffs that hug the walled town of  Kotor ,  is a highlight.

Relish a walking tour of Kotor’s Old Town before enjoying time at leisure. Those feeling energetic may like to climb the 1,350 steps to the top of the town’s fortifications, or alternatively, you can delve into history at the Maritime Museum.

Kotor, Sipan

Set sail for the Elaphiti Islands off the coast. This small cluster of islands offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of the more populated destinations along the Croatian coast. En route to Sipan, stop for a swim from the yacht's stern platform (weather permitting). Later set sail for Sipan, where you’ll enjoy free time to explore before dinner.

Sipan, Korcula

Witness an exclusive Moreska performance. This traditional sword dance dates back centuries and involves two groups of dancers representing opposing kingdoms engaging in battle to win over the heart of the King's fiance.

Enjoy postcard-perfect island views as you stop for a swim near Mijet. Later, arrive in Korcula, the birthplace of Marco Polo. Here, stroll along medieval streets which are flanked by palaces and take in a special Signature Experience. Your yacht will dock here overnight.

Korcula, Croatia

Korcula, Opuzen, Mostar

The picturesque town of Opuzen lies upstream on the Neretva River. After lunch, travel by coach over the border to Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. See the World Heritage-listed Stari Most (Old Bridge), which arches high above the Neretva. Learn about the history of the bridge on a walking tour, as well as Mostar's other fascinating sites. Dinner will be in a local restaurant with traditional entertainment.

Bol, Makarska

The morning kicks off with a cruise to the island of Brac. Make a beeline for the town of Bol, home to the Zlatni Rat (Golden Cape). This beach is made up of tiny white pebbles that shift with the vagaries of the wind and waves, and meets the sea like a spearhead. During your time here, you might like the chance to take a dip or explore the town, which is known for its 15th-century Dominican monastery and museum. Later cruise to Makarska, where your yacht will dock overnight.

Makasrska, Split

This morning your yacht will sail to Split. On arrival, board small boats for an excursion along the emerald green Cetina River. Head towards Radmanove Mlinice (Radman's Mills). The stone mill was established in 1772 to grind cereal for the people of Omis.

Split, Sibenik, Radosic

At the village of Radosic, be welcomed with local brandy and doughnuts and enjoy traditional entertainment before a meal of regional specialties.

Take a guided tour of historic Split and its Roman-era landmarks. Travel by coach to Radosic for a Signature Experience before rejoining your yacht, which is now docked in Sibenik.

Sibenik, Krka National Park, Zadar

Today, visit the spectacular Krka National Park. Spend the morning strolling along boardwalks to view Krka's famous waterfalls. The most memorable is Skradinski Buk, which is made up of scores of separate cascades. Afterwards, Lady Eleganza sails to Zadar. Located on a small peninsula, Zadar retains an impressive core of Roman ruins as well as some surprising modern touches. Your yacht will remain docked here overnight.

Krka Ntional Park waterfalls

Zadar, Mali Losinj

Relax as your yacht sails towards Losinj island. Take a walking tour of the main town, Mali Losinj, and admire the pastel-coloured villas  along the waterfront. You also have the opportunity to experience local life and visit a buzzing cafe or tavern after your dinner on board.

Mali Losinj, Pula

This morning, Lady Eleganza charts a course for Pula. Located on the tip of the Istrian Peninsula, Pula is a treasure trove of Roman ruins. Later this afternoon, visit the remarkably preserved Arena. Built in the first century AD, it housed up to 23,000 spectators who watched deadly gladiatorial battles. The Arena is the only remaining Roman amphitheatre in existence to have all four walls entirely preserved.

Pula, Rovinj

Your journey continues in Rovinj. On arrival, join a walking tour which includes the 18th-century Venetian-style church, dedicated to the martyred saint whose sarcophagus is said to have been miraculously washed ashore here around 800AD.

Disembark Yacht, Rovinj, Depart Zagreb

After breakfast, it is time to bid a fond farewell to the MV Lady Eleganza. You will be transferred to Zagreb Airport for your onward flight.

Island Hopping in Croatia: Stunning Destinations Only Accessible by Boat

The enchanting Adriatic coastline is a dreamy escape for yachters manifesting the ideal Mediterranean summer. Private yacht charters flock to the Croatian coast every summer to uncover over 1000 islands, effortlessly enhancing any luxury sailing trip with unspoiled beauty and unmatched charm.

But it’s more than the islands that tempt yacht charters on Croatia island hopping adventures all summer long - it’s the stunning seascapes that amplify the island scenery, from secluded bays to pristine pebbly beaches and natural hidden gems you’ll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere on your travels.

And for quintessential island hopping in Croatia, you’ll want to discover the jewels of the Adriatic that can only be accessed by boat, resulting in an exclusive experience for luxury yachters where local culinary delights entice even the most demanding of gourmands, age-old customs captivate all ages, and sea settings are so stunning you’ll be spellbound from one island to the next.

Ošljak - the smallest inhabited island

Starting the adventure in the charming city of Zadar , the sail is set towards the island of Ošljak, located just a short distance away. Ošljak, known as the smallest inhabited island in the Adriatic, offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city. As the island is approached, the shimmering blue waters and picturesque coastline come into view, promising a day of relaxation and exploration.

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

Upon reaching Ošljak, first stop is  Restaurant Lazaret , situated on the island's coast. Nestled amidst the island's natural beauty, this restaurant is renowned for its delectable seafood dishes and breathtaking views of the Adriatic. Indulging in a sumptuous meal, you can savor the flavors of freshly caught fish and locally sourced ingredients, all while enjoying the serenity of the island atmosphere. The skilled chefs at Lazaret have perfected the art of preparing seafood, infusing each dish with a harmonious balance of flavors. Whether you choose to indulge in the simplicity of grilled fish seasoned with local herbs or savor the complexity of a seafood risotto bursting with aromatic spices, every bite is a testament to the culinary expertise of the kitchen.

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

Kornati - a nautical paradise

It’s not easy to find islands so alluring they’ve been considered some of God’s best work, but Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw swears that God crowned his masterpiece by creating the Kornati Islands  “out of tears, stars, and breath.” This otherworldly yachter’s paradise sits in the northern part of Dalmatia and is the densest and largest archipelago in the Adriatic. Formed by a labyrinth of mostly barren islands, 89 of which are protected by a national park, Kornati is an exclusive experience for luxury yachts that offer a pristine exploration of the Adriatic. And the best part about being on a private yacht charter in Croatia ? Having prime boat access is the only way to uncover Kornati’s unique sandy beaches, untouched corners, and secluded bays.

Modri Bok Bay is one of Kornati’s genuine yachting treasures, tucked into this mesmerizing archipelago. This uncommon rectangular bay entrances yachters with intense hues of blue, enhanced by a barren landscape that carpets its surface. A picture of beauty and tranquility, Modri Bok allures all yacht charters cruising by as its dramatic cliffs wrap visitors into seclusion. No wonder it’s an idyllic stop for anyone looking to swim, snorkel, or bask in the summer sun in serenity.

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

And to crown your perfect Kornati day? You can’t miss the unbeatable culinary experience at Restoran Fešta , the sure winner of Kornati’s gastronomic map. Situated on the island of Žut, this restaurant is dotted with yachts all summer long, docked up to the restaurant’s marina before anticipating the ultimate Mediterranean feast. Using the freshest locally sourced ingredients crafted into the region’s culinary traditions, with seafood, homemade olive oil, and wine in focus, be prepared for unmatched culinary delights in a setting at sea you won’t soon forget.

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

Vis - a serene oasis

Moving further south is an untouched pearl of Central Dalmatia known as the picture of pristine - Vis Island. It certainly helps that this island was closed to foreigners until 1991, as it was used as a military island for Tito during World War II. Even though that was long ago, yachters reap the benefits of its unparalleled beauty today.

Sprinkled with quaint fishing towns and hillside villages, tranquil beaches, and hard-to-reach bays, Vis offers more than its island charm - it is a dream for luxury yachts traversing the unspoiled parts of Croatia . And there is no better stop than Ravnik Bay, a stunning sanctuary for yachters amplified by a turquoise color palette, with a hidden pebbly beach inviting you for a swim. Drop anchor around Ravnik Island and explore the captivating Green Cave, too, an exclusive experience wrapped in emerald tones and one of Croatia’s off-the-beaten-path natural phenomena.

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

Your island-hopping adventure around Vis would not be complete without a stop at Konoba Budikovac, a truly hidden gem nestled on the island's picturesque coast. Tucked away from the bustling tourist crowds, this rustic tavern remains a well-kept secret, known only to a select few who stumble upon its enchanting ambiance. Konoba Budikovac exudes an authentic charm that transports you back in time, with its weathered stone walls, wooden beams, and traditional decor. But what truly sets Konoba Budikovac apart is its mouthwatering culinary offerings, which showcase the very best of Vis' gastronomic traditions. The tavern's secluded location adds to its allure, as it can only be reached by boat, making it a favorite among yachters exploring the Adriatic Sea.

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

Mljet - nature's paradise

And then there is Mljet, an island in Southern Dalmatia best known for its national park. Not too far from the popular walls of Dubrovnik , Mljet is a fairytale destination in Croatia wrapped in age-old stories that come to life through its verdant and heavily wooded scenery. Deep cerulean sea tones wash up on white rocks to outline a seascape ideal for luxury yachts, which cruise for buried bays that can only be approached by boat. The epitome of serenity and seclusion, Mljet is a dream for yachters looking to escape into the natural world.

Polače Bay is one stop yachters shouldn't miss on their next private charter, especially those looking to dive head-first into the untouched natural beauty of Mljet Island. Hugged by a verdant pine forest on Mljet's northeastern coast, Polače Bay entices yachters to its sheltered confines, where the song of cicadas echoes through the woods and into the sea, buzzing out any unwanted noise for your ultimate tranquility. A dip in the sea smothers your skin in salt, perfect for baking in the sun, while snorkeling invites you to explore the transparent underwater world.

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

And when you’ve worked up an appetite, your luxury yacht charter cannot pass up Bowa , a posh culinary spot just a short cruise from Mljet on the island of Šipan. Not only does Bowa’s philosophy live off of the best of what’s around, but this delicious destination is accessible by boaters only. Tucked into the white rocks on the waterfront with cabanas and tables over the sea, Bowa not only gives you the best view in the house, but you’ll be eating only what can be sourced on the island. The finest local ingredients form into perfect Mediterranean dishes where the freshest seafood is the star, with each bite effortlessly marrying the island scenery, creating a classic summertime experience.

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

After Bowa we arrive at our final destination, Dubrovnik , where the Adriatic adventure ends.

Your island-hopping adventure in Croatia should not be anything less than extraordinary. Embark on a luxury yacht charter to cruise through unmatched seascapes and stunning island destinations like Ošljak, Kornati Islands, Vis, and Mljet, all enhanced by the ultimate exclusivity, serenity, pristine natural wonders, and culinary delights only your private yacht charter can promise. Experience the epitome of luxury while exploring Croatia's stunning islands for life-long memories you will cherish forever.

Best Island Hopping In Croatia

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

The great luxury of chartering your own private yacht in Croatia is the freedom that it grants you. Nothing but the soothing aqua-marine ripples of the Adriatic Sea stand between you and anywhere that you wish to travel along the nation’s stunning coastline. There are endless golden shores, fascinating ports and hidden, cliff-fringed coves waiting for you to drop anchor nearby and explore.

However, with such endless choice ahead of you it can be difficult to settle on a particular itinerary. So, what is the best way to sail Croatia? The short answer is that there is no perfect route. Different parts of the country offer a variety of different aspects of Croatian wonder, so it is essentially due to personal preference.

To help you make a decision on the itinerary that best suits you, here are some of the best sample sailing itineraries in Croatia.

South Dalmatia

Perhaps the most popular area to focus on during a sailing trip to Croatia, south Dalmatia harnesses some of the country’s most spectacular spots. When traveling along the southern end of Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, it is likely that your journey will start in the country’s most famous city – Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik is a port city whose offerings range from scenic sea views and gourmet eateries to a fascinating history that can be felt in every alley that you walk through. Having explored the city’s endearing nooks and crannies, set sail for the stunning island of Korčula. A brilliant combination of glorious Mediterranean beaches and charming coastal towns, this island is sure to capture your imagination. Sail over to the eastern reaches to explore the picturesque fortifications of Korčula town or head off the western coast for some of Croatia’s greatest diving spots .

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

On your way to the final stop in Hvar, take a break in the quintessential Croatian fishing village of Trstenik. Experience a local way of life in this traditional Adriatic settlement, before sampling local products among your peaceful coastal surroundings. Next is Hvar, a city made famous by the manner in which its stunning architecture hugs the cove on which it is built. Drop anchor in the town’s port and get lost among its magical system of narrow streets before enjoying an evening meal on the deck of your boat as the sun sets behind the city.

Check out our Private Charter Catamaran Package for a tour that visits all of these spots.

North Dalmatia

Heading just up the coast, you will begin your journey in the yachting hub that is Split. The city’s promenade is legendary, but behind the impressive architectural facade lie treasures in the form of Croatia’s best preserved Roman buildings and some of the country’s finest eateries. It is the perfect place to gather your bearings, get a taste for the country and stock up for the luxurious journey ahead.

Set off for the first stop of nearby Omiš, a fantastic little town that is so often overlooked by travelers in this region. A hub of local activity, it is a diminutive town bursting with character and overlooked by the stark rock formations that loom overhead. Perfect for adrenaline junkies, Omiš offers opportunities to climb, abseil and raft your way around the rugged surrounding landscape.

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

After Omiš, you will set sail for the famous Croatian island of Brač, a location renowned for the white sand beaches that grace its shores. Some of the most spectacular beaches in Croatia can be found on Brač, including the world famous Zlatni Rat. Simply pick a spot, drop anchor and immerse yourself in paradise. Brač is also famous for its watersports, attracting windsurfing enthusiasts from across the planet to its shores year-round.

If you like the sound of both south and north Dalmatia, take a look at our suggested itinerary for the Ultimate Island Hopping Adventure , which covers both regions.

Istrian Peninsula

Perhaps you believe that the best way to sail Croatia is to head off the beaten track? For something slightly different, why not head to the lesser-explored Croatian coastline on the Istrian Peninsula. Begin your journey in the town of Poreč, a spot popular with local travelers on vacation thanks to its stunning beaches and historic old town. It is the ideal venue to immerse yourself in local Croatian culture and stock up everything you need for your private yacht.

Setting off from Poreč, stop off in your own private coves without a single other soul in sight as you gradually make your way south to the next stop – Rovinj. The fishing port is famous for its hilltop church emerging from the tangled streets below, which looks simply incredible from the water. Dock your vessel and delve into the intricate system of small alleys and undiscovered local eateries.

2023 croatia island hopping private yacht and magical montenegro experience

Head further south on the peninsula and visit the city of Pula, a place known for its stunning Roman amphitheatre – the best preserved example outside Italy. Afterwards head beyond and take your pick of the beaches on Cres Island. Perhaps the most stunning is the beach at St. Ivan, which not only offers pearl-white sands and sapphire sea, but also an element of privacy that other Croatian beaches cannot deliver. Enjoying the entire beach to yourself is the perfect way to finish your trip.
