NDSE is hull #2 in the Long Island 85 series. In the constant search for weight reduction JFA Yachts paid particular attention to the use of light materials, including laminates on honeycomb cores for the construction of the interior, the hull out of aluminum, a superstructure made of composite, and the Mast and Boom are made of Carbon Fiber. This resulted in a lightship weight of only 56T for this 85' performance, cruising catamaran. Delivered in 2018, NDSE was designed for circumnavigation through both poles, and has already been taken to Antarctica by her current owner. Whether you are cruising in the tropics or the arctic the NDSE is built to make sure you are comfortable and safe in all conditions. 

Equipped with a carbon mast and boom, NDSE features a sail plan tailored for high-performance sailing together with hydraulic fittings on the flybridge which ensures she is easily handled, even with a reduced crew.  Externally, the yacht offers a large aft cockpit with a relaxing seating area on starboard and a dining table on the port side, together with large sunbathing areas and a daytime toilet.  In order to limit the overall weight of the boat, the use of teak was limited to the deck forward of the owner's cabin, the aft cockpit, and the flybridge.In terms of performance under sail, she is very quick….  The sails were made by the highly respected sailmaker "Incidences"  using the latest D4 membrane technology in order to combine form with stability, lightness, and longevity. NDSE  achieves 11 knots upwind and 12 knots under gennaker at 90 °, with 15 knots of true wind meaning that she is capable of very good daily averages when cruising.French interior design house, Darnet Design, created a sophisticated yet understatedly elegant interior using natural tones.  The furniture is in oak, contrasted by the addition of walnut with the space enhanced by the addition of multiple soft furnishings in bright colors to lift the entire space to another level and also allowing for an element of customisation by the new owner.The cockpit flows into the huge main saloon, with a bar on starboard and a more formal dining area on port side.  Forward is the chart table which includes all the navigation equipment, significantly upgraded for global exploration by the owner, together with entertainment and excellent communication systems which allow for long stays on board.The owner's cabin occupies the entire beam of the boat, including a lounge area and large windows which flood the room with light and allow for splendid panoramic views as well as private access to the foredeck.

The port hull accommodates the owner's bathroom, a children's cabin with 3 beds, together with a guest cabin aft.  The aft section of the starboard hull accommodates the 4th guest cabin.  The forward section is dedicated to the crew with the captain's cabin, a double cabin, and large galley with crew mess.A 16' tender aft of the cockpit is launched using a Tenderlift platform.The many exterior lockers offer ample storage for fenders and mooring lines as well as an array of leisure equipment (inflatable longboards, Wakeboard, etc.).  NDSE also has a large trunk overlooking the rear platform to store 4 bicycles as well as diving equipment.

WindQuest: JFA's first 26m semi-custom Long Island 85 catamaran

A shipyard’s commitment to quality combined with an owner’s lifelong passion for sailing has resulted in the first Long Island 85 catamaran WindQuest – a robust 25.9 metre success story. After five years using a Privilige 745 catamaran – in which he had bought a stake – as a summer home, retired US businessman Milton Sender was sold on the catamaran concept and set out to create his own custom version. Teaming up with renowned French naval architect Marc Lombard, who had designed the Privilege, Sender was introduced to French yard JFA. Their collaboration has created the Long Island 85 catamaran, of which Sender’s yacht, WindQuest, was the first example launched .

‘I love the exterior styling,’ Sender enthuses. ‘It doesn’t look overpoweringly large, and it has a beautiful proportion to it. It’s huge inside and compact outside, and I think this is the best of both worlds.’ Destined both to be used as Sender’s new summer home, and for chartering in the winter in the Caribbean, WindQuest offers astonishing guest space in a solid package – aluminium hulls mean she is a true go-anywhere fast cruiser.

Inspiration

Following Sender’s experiences on the Privilege, the choice of a catamaran was easy. ‘I recognised this was a much more confortable way to sail fast,’ he says. ‘You aren’t at a 45-degree angle all the time, you can have lunch and not spill the wine and still have a good sail.’ For JFA, choosing aluminium for the hulls was based on the idea that a one-off mould would have been too costly, with neither Sender nor JFA knowing if another client might want a similar yacht. As it is, the yacht has been built to a standard above the top production yachts but just short of a no-expense-spared custom superyacht, with a view to creating a semi-custom range of catamarans under the Long Island banner.

Construction

Aluminium hulls are combined with a composite superstructure and carbon reinforcement to create a yacht that not only remains lightweight, but also carries several advantages – with the hull prone to deforming rather than breaching in the event of a collision, and with aluminium able to be repaired in almost any corner of the globe, WindQuest has the potential to be a true world cruiser. Clever elements include a lifting system for the tender – carried athwartships on the aft platform – which comprises a carbon pole that extends from the end of the boom coupled with a halyard. JFA has also consulted with the likes of Van Cappellan to ensure a high degree of sound and vibration insulation, while the interior uses various advanced techniques to deliver luxury without weight.

Exterior styling

Remaining relatively sleek in spite of the prodigious interior volume was a key criterion for the design and build. Moreover, the naval architecture as been refined to ensure the yacht does not experience wave slamming under the main accommodation pod while underway – a common problem with many catamaran designs. WindQuest's aggressively angled hull stems scream both performance and serious cruising intent, while the flybridge profile has been kept well in proportion to the overall length without compromising exterior space or sail handling.

Interior design

A simple palette of pale browns, creams and honey has been achieved through the judicious use of maple and wengé as the main woods. The layout is also superb, with two double guest cabins aft in each hull, a large central saloon-cum-dining area, and a master suite that offers a forward sleeping area with spectacular views, a lower master en suite with steam room, and a port midships study with sofabed which cleverly converts to an additional guest double when required. ‘What Marc designed feels like what you would have on a 150-footer,’ says Sender. ‘It’s spectacular – it’s the largest master cabin and accommodation suite you could imagine.’

Outdoor living

An extensive aft deck with a permanent dining area to port is complemented by a flybridge/sun deck area, which also features the main sailing controls and the outside helm station. Forward, a yawn of deck in front of the master cabin – which can be accessed directly from the cabin – serves as an owner’s deck, with an additional level on the eyebrow above the cabin offering a secondary owner’s perch. Access to the water via the hull transoms is superb, and the forward trampolines are always a favourite for relaxing in the sun.

Engineering and performance

Built with performance in mind, WindQuest has already hit 16 knots under sail, but this has not been at the expense of heavy weather performance. We joined the yacht on one of her early sea trials and stood with whoops and smiles as she pushed through a hard chop at 12 knots on a reach with a double-reefed main and staysail as the wind climbed to 55 knots true. Not that this should have been a surprise – JFA has built a reputation for constructing solid, go-anywhere world cruisers, both sail and motor, which have visited all corners of the globe.

Sun Tenareze – now Azizam – 85′ Sailing Catamaran

Sun Tenareze: 3 year circumnavigation

Sun Tenareze is not only the first catamaran built by JFA Yachts, but it is also the first project undertaken with naval architects Joubert-Nivelt. From the initial sketches, the objective was to create a yacht with fine finish and sailing performance.

The owners’ representative was deeply involved in the construction. The team wanted to have an elegant catamaran with inclined bows and a closed transom, in contrast to other catamarans of that era, where the steps were left exposed on the stern and there was no swimming platform.

The hull and superstructure are in nomex glass, cooked at 100° with carbon reinforcements. To reduce weight, and facilitate upkeep, there is no exterior teak except in the cockpit. A carbon mast and a 10.3m « Park Avenue » carbon boom; manual rollerfurling and Kevlar side stays make it a very interesting and fast sailing yacht.

Technically, Sun Tenareze is equipped with 2 x Yanmar 150 HP and can reach max speed of 11. 8 knots at 3 500 revs per minute and 9 knots at 1 800 revs per minute.

The interior is fashioned from moabi wood and the walls are panelled in white lacquer.  Sun Tenareze was destined to take on a fast cruising circumnavigation. The client, an experienced sailing aficionado was fully satisfied with her, as were his sailing friends, for she was perfectly adapted to operating with reduced crew.   Since her launch, Sun Tenareze has achieved the equivalent of 3 circum-navigation around the world.

A special, purpose-built aft platform was added to the cockpit and includes two comfortable fighting chairs with aluminium plate reinforcement and the offset swivel stanchion.

Sunreef 75ft Sportfish Catamaran

The gigantic 40sqm flybridge houses the main helm station with complete state-of-the art navigation and communication equipment. This space is permanently covered with a composite rigid top which allows for navigation in cold, northern fishing zones. Standard amenities on board the 75 Sunreef Power Sport Fish also include a one-piece anodized aluminium ladder to the tower with outriggers from the flybridge. The outdoors of the fly bridge can be fully customised and comprise sunbathing lounge, dining area, open bar and barbecue, water toys storage or a Spa Pool.

As for the interior of the 75 Sunreef Power Sport Fish Catamaran, they will be fully customised and laid-out in charter, owner or a semi-owner version accommodating 4-5 double guest cabins all with private en-suite bathrooms and separate showers, TV and DVD set, small desk and storage and 1 double crew cabin. The interior design can represent modern, minimalist, classic, maritime and even oriental styles, depending on client’s choice.
