"Barbie Cup" Cadet Sailing Race - Re-Run date Sunday 6th October

Re-run to be held in conjunction with the 1st Winter Series Race. A dinghy race for Cadets only, to celebrate the life of Markie Pell (known by many as "Barbie due to his pink coloured wetsuit), who provided paramedic cover during many years of BYC Cadet Sail Training Week. Hannah from "Coffee and Moore", a local Benfleet based business providing light lunches to the Benfleet community, will now be supplying freshly prepared pre-packed sandwiches to the Club at a very reasonable price of £3.20 per pack. Initially deliveries will be 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We will adjust the delivery schedule with demand. Please come along for a lunchtime drink and a sandwich in support of the Club.

Benfleet Yacht Club

Founded in 1922, Benfleet Yacht Club is a large and friendly members-run club located alongside Benfleet Creek, on the northern shore of Canvey Island in Essex. The club offers great opportunities for all craft – dinghy sailing and coastal rowing mainly take place in the sheltered waters of Benfleet Creek, while for cruising yachts, the Rivers Medway and Swale are just a few hours away, and slightly further afield are the superb cruising grounds of the East Coast rivers. For a great summer cruise, Benfleet is within striking distance of the northern coast of France and Belgium and the vast inland waterways of Holland.   Complementing the club’s busy sailing programme and popular Cadet Sail Training Week, a superb clubhouse includes a bar that’s open lunchtime and evenings seven days a week, and there’s an active social and entertainments programme all year round. Benfleet Yacht Club offers a large number of tidal moorings for yachts, along with second-to-none on-shore storage for both yachts and dinghies. A range of membership options and a one-off club joining fee are applicable, but the club is keen to be affordable for all: it’s possible to keep a 29ft yacht here for less than £600 a year – and that includes haul out, winter lay-up and relaunch!

Benfleet Yacht Club is well known for organising The Nore Race, a combined open cruiser and dinghy race that covers a 20-mile circuit of the Thames Estuary, starting and finishing at Southend Pier. Since 2010 Benfleet Yacht Club’s Coastal Rowers have also organised the Round Canvey Race, an annual open event in which rowing, paddling and sailing vessels complete a 14.5 mile circuit of Canvey Island. An eclectic mix of craft have competed to date, with boats from as far as Whitby travelling to take part.

Robin Knox-Johnston

Hero and honorary member of benfleet yacht club.

Neither born or bred in Benfleet, Robin Knox-Johnston became a member of the Benfleet Yacht Club before his famous voyage. In his autobiography “Force of Nature” he recalls that when I first brought Suhaili back from India I tried to join the Royal Medway Y.C. but was told there was a two year waiting list and besides, I couldn’t afford it. So in 1967 I joined Benfleet Yacht Club because Dad knew a member, and we laid Suhaili up in Benfleet Creek while I went back to sea.  It was a nice friendly club and has stayed that way, so I am still a member there. That was the only British yacht club I had been exposed to so I had no idea what other clubs were like and was not aware that they could be a little snooty.

At some stage during her stay at Benfleet the boat was advertised for sale…. unsuccessfully. This proved fortunate as Suhaili went on to be the boat in which Knox-Johnston participated in the 1969 Sunday Times Golden Globe race.  This was a race to be the first sailor to single – handedly sail non-stop around the world.  He duly won and became a sailing legend.
