Burrard Yacht Club Festival of Lights 2023

Vancouver’s North Shore will once again be alight with a dazzling parade full of festive light displays. The popular North Vancouver Festival of Lights Boat Parade returns to continue its 30+ year tradition of warming hearts.

Nearly two dozen boats will strut their stuff on December 2, decked out with wreaths, LEDS, inflatable decorations, Santa Clauses, and snowmen.

And there are many recommended spots to see the shining holiday boats in action. Favourite locations includes the shore at Waterfront Park, the pier at the Shipyards, or a waterfront restaurant.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by BURRARD YACHT CLUB (BYC) (@burrardyachtclub)

The parade is ran by a community of wonderful volunteers at the Burrard Yacht Club. Many of the shimmering boats on display will be from the very same club, along with some others from the local community.

The event looks to give back to the community. They have previously raised money for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. This year’s charity is yet to be confirmed.

Event Details

When: Saturday, December 2 at 6pm.

Where: The route starts at the Burrard Yacht Club before moving through the Shipyards in North Vancouver. The next destination is Coal Harbour, before circling back towards the Burrard club to complete the loop.

Cost: It is free to view the event

Two dozen boats will put on a dazzling performance to kick of the holiday season.

Similar to the False Creek ferry ballet ,  carol ships , and Santa's Christmas Ships , approximately 24 boats from the Burrard Yacht Club will sail around Vancouver Harbour dressed up in Christmas lights for the club's annual Festival of Lights boat parade.

Last year the parade had only about 15 boats due to increased COVID-19 restrictions.

On Dec. 3 the boat parade will depart from Burrard Yacht Club at 6 p.m. and cruise over to Lonsdale Quay in a long, slow loop, docking at around 6:10 p.m. After a stop at the waterfront, the parade will continue across the water to Coal Harbour before returning to the yacht club.

Burrard Yacht Club

Byc outstations.

The Burrard Yacht Club (BYC) is active in the procurement and maintenance of outstation destinations for BYC Members to enjoy. Active boating is the hallmark of BYC, and all Members are encouraged to use the Outstations as often as possible.

One of the key advantages of membership with Burrard Yacht Club are the many fantastic Outstations that are available for your use. BYC owns the following outstations:

  • Clementine Outstation at the North End of Indian Arm,
  • Ekins Point in Howe Sound,
  • Birdseye Cove Marina in Maple Bay, Duncan
  • Pender Harbor on the Sunshine Coast, a long- term leased outstation.

We also have annual-leased outstation slip agreements at:

  • Snug Cove on Bowen Island
  • Gibsons Marina on the Sunshine Coast
  • Silva Bay Resort & Marina on Gabriola Island

BIRDSEYE COVE MARINA OUTSTATION, MAPLE BAY

In November of 2019, BYC purchased the Birdseye Cove Marina located approximately halfway up Sansum Narrows, between Crofton to the north and Cowichan Bay to the South. The cove is well-protected from most weather conditions and seas by Vancouver Island and Salt Spring Island to the East.

Unlike BYC’s other properties, this Outstation is a commercially operated property that is well developed both on the water with docks and on land with buildings and other assets as follow:

  • A large house that is rented to a tenant.
  • A small one-bedroom apartment that is currently occupied by a BYC staff member and may be rented to a tenant in the future.
  • A commercial space at the front of the property on Genoa Bay Road that is leased to a tenant.
  • Approximately 75% of dock space is rented to long-term and short-term boaters including some live-a-boards. These are not BYC Members.

In the basement of the house there is a small workshop, shower, washer and dryer.  The shower washer and dryer have sign up sheets.  Members are welcome to use tools out of the workshop, but MUST speak to the Facilities Manager first.  Just outside of the garage is a public bathroom, available to members and tenants.

Overlooking the docks is a Studio Building consisting of one room with a bathroom and small kitchenette.

Ekins Point - Gambier Island

Clementine creek outstation, indian arm.

The Clementine Creek Outstation is located at the Northern end of Indian Arm, 16 miles from BYC. It is abeam and to the West of the north shore of Croker Island. The outstation is 8.42 hectares (20.8 acres) and has over 200 meters (660 ft.) of waterfront. There is over 300 meters (1000 ft.) of moorage. A small pavilion (Clemmy Pub) is located on the docks at the foot of the ramp.

A large deck and pavilion are located ashore. Clementine Outstation has trails, barbecues, a large fire pit, a horseshoe pitch, a beach, two outhouses, and level ground for tenting. Near the shore pavilion is a container that houses some tools and other supplies.  Black bears are occasional visitors so children and pets should be closely supervised.

EKINS POINT OUTSTATION, GAMBIER ISLAND

The Ekins Point Outstation is located 25 miles from BYC at the Northernmost part of Gambier Island where Ramillies and Thornbrough Channels meet. The property is approximately 2.64 hectares (6.5 acres) with about 550 meters (1800 ft) of waterfront. Ekins Point light (LL no. 428) serves as a convenient navigation aid and is on BYC property.

Ekins Point Outstation has an alluring serenity that promotes return visits. The docks are large enough to accommodate a number of vessels; however, if you plan on staying overnight it is advisable to move to the inside. There you are protected from wash, often brought forth by a tug passing by at 0300. The ramp and pier allow shore access to terrain that is varied and, for the most part, quite walkable. Explore green mossy meadows and cleared areas with picturesque views.

The trail to the Point Light is steep and can be dangerous for the less dexterous. The trail has ropes installed to assist your descent and return. Please be careful!

Dockside, you will find a lot of space on our four 12 x 30-meter (40 x 100 ft.) docks and one 8 x 200 ft. dock. The docks support a pavilion, a fire pit and bar-b-ques. On the shore is a container which houses some tools and other supplies.

GARDEN BAY OUTSTATION, PENDER HARBOR

Pender harbour.

This BYC outstation is located on the northwest corner of Garden Bay in Pender Harbor. (Look for the dock in front of the Quonset hut with the blue roof.). There is a total of 73 meters (240 ft) of moorage using both the inside and outside of the dock. Rafting of vessels is permitted on the outside in accordance with Outstation Regulation 23. Please reserve this space on the outside dock for larger vessels if you can safely use the inside dock. Tenders must be moored on the inside dock area and must not impede yacht dockage in an otherwise usable space. Guest’s vessels are not permitted at our Pender outstation.

There are five 15-amp power outlets on the dock for a nightly fee payable by sign in sheet. Water is available on the dock but must be used conservatively during the summer months. Members may top up tanks, but boat washing is not permitted.

Wireless internet is available and connection details can be found inside the Quonset Hut. Your member key will provide access to this area.

There are a number of additional amenities here that we don’t have at any other outstation.  The buildings, grounds and decks are all communal except for six pre-reserved sleeping cabins and rooms. The main house has two bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, three bedrooms and a laundry. Along the deck are three additional sleeping cabins and an additional bathroom with tub and shower.

Pender Harbour

Snug Cove | Gibsons | Silva Bay

Along with our owned outstations, BYC has reciprocal moorage agreements with some 90 yacht clubs here on Canada’s West Coast and on the USA’s West Coast. Please refer to the BYC website for further information on these: https://burrardyachtclub.com/reciprocals . Reciprocal moorage is NOT permitted at any outstation, only at our North Vancouver location.

BYC has dedicated space at Snug Cove. The berths are located on the south side of “E” dock (92 feet). The moorage is identified by a BYC burgee and signage.

BYC has dedicated dock space on the north side of “D” dock, berth #41(53 feet) and #42 (60 feet) that will be marked by signage and burgees.
