60' ketch in "Captain Ron"

One of my favorite "fun" movies, "Captain Ron", has a 60' ketch in it. Does anybody know about the real yacht. Who are the designers and builders. Is she really 60' long. This will be pushing it, but does anybody know how much of the actual interior shots were done inside.

i don't know any of the answers, learpilot. but i thought i'd add that movie is howi got my nickname. a buddy of mine saw the movie and started calling me capt'n ron because i reminded him of the capt'n ron in the movie, the name stuck and i am called by that monicer all over the area by most of the guys i work with in a about a 100 mile radius of my home town. funny thing is at the time of the movie's debut, there were several people who satrted calling me that at the same time with no co-laberation on thier part. it is a nice looking ketch though, isn't it.

Hi LearPilot My most favorable memories of Capt Ron were those beautiful legs on the women However, the boat used in the movie is a Formosa 51. If I'm not mistaken, it is the same boat, after some cosmetic changes eg. metal mast etc etc were made, that was used in the movie "First 50 Dates" OTOH, the boat also looks remarkably like a Hudson Force 51.......
There were 3 boats used in the movie. All three were Formosa 51's. One was a total mess, and that one was used in the initial scenes at the dock of the neglected boat. Another was not in quite as bad of shape, but still bad, and was used in the scenes where the boat was shot up by the "pirates of the Caribbean". The third boat used for all on deck and offshore sailing scenes is a Formoso 51 named Wanderer, if I'm not mistaken, from Kemah, Texas. All of the below deck scenes were shot in a movie studio, on a fabricated set.
Formosa 51 Thanks Wynand N, You'll have to excuse my ignorance, a Formosa 51 would be 51' LOA? Just curious because they call it a 60' er in the movie. I was going to be quite impressed with the size of the interior if they had actually shot it in the yacht itself. Looked like the master suite had 10' ceilings. Thanks again.

both the "Wonderer" and another formosa 51 named "Windborne"are docket within half/mile of each other one in Kemath and the other across the channel in Seabrook,TX. I have been told that both were used in the movie. I have been aboard both, and seen the movie, and I thank, at lest some othe interior shot were inside. The "Windborne" is beautiful has just been refit&refinished.

Well, you do have to pay slip-fees for 60 feet, so why not? Yoke.

Do a Google Search for 51' Formosa ketch. The boat used in Captain Ron was a 51' Formosa Ketch called "Wanderer"

Tis true. The Wanderer is a 51 Formosa Ketch. It is docked in Kemah, Tx. Located just down from my brothers boat. It is starting to waste away as the new owners have not been keeping her up.

I too like the formosa design , so much so that I flew to Hawaii to look over a CT41 formosa but ended up buying a Transworld 41 for 20K , a centre cocpit aft cabin with fibreglass decks and cabins . It is esentially the same as the formosa's , that is, William Gardner design but unlike most of the Taiwan boats it has glass decks and cabins . Story goes a couple of American guys ordered the glass decks etc for the same design as the CT's , Taichi's , sea wolf's, hardins and by what ever else name they go under . I have edited this post severely as it has had the desired efect [ for those who read it first -- he has offered to pay me back ]

You could just go out and buy the actual boat http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1978/Formosa-Cutter-Rigged-Ketch-2076793/Kemah/TX/United-States

60ft Ketch in "Captain Ron" Hi LP , as previously posted by Wynand N ., the " Captain Ron " Ketch is indeed, the " Wanderer ", a Formosa 51 and yes, it is slipped at the Kemah Boardwalk Marina in Kemah, Texas. My wife and I loved the movie and wanting to see the boat, sailed through the Marina last year and saw her. If memory serves, she's on the 3rd pier in from the marina's water entrance off the Seabrook channel (the Seabrook channel takes you from NASA's Clear Lake, to Trinity Bay). Stop in and see her sometime.

The Wanderer is presently for sale on www.yachtworld.com . I also had my vessel the Angelique for sale last year but pulled her from the market until the economy changes. Many of the movie shots were filmed on sets. The engine room for one. It's not hard though to make a cabin look large. Here is a shot of my main salon shot through a fish eye lens. Oh and my overall length is just over 59'. LOA She is a center cockpit model.

Captain Ron and the famous Wanderer Well... How about an update on the famous sailboat used in the Captain Ron movie, "The Wanderer"? The newest owner (owner number 10) wanted a project that he could renovate for retirement and cruising. The mystic of the Wanderer movie life and saving the vessel from Davie Jones Locker played a key role in her purchase. Not to mentions, an excellent price. After taking on what looks to be a 4 year project, I moved her over to the yard to let the work begin. Once in the yard, I took a long hard look at what once was a magnificent vessel; that, sadly to say individuals just could not take care of her over time. I stepped back and said, what did I get myself involved in, and, where do I start? That ended up being an easy decision...stop her from sinking! Next we evicted the live aboard "taking care of her". We immediately gutted the interior and sprayed to eliminate a zillion roaches and mites! We then pulled the 120hp Ford Lehman engine out and took it to the shop for a complete rebuild which should take about 7 to 8 weeks. As the days passed we cut out 9 stainless tanks and removed all the plumbing, wiring and everything that had either worn out or was just not needed. Starting with her bottom; as she had 18 thru-hulls. WOW! It looked as if each time a previous owner wanted to add something to her that required punching a hole in her, sadly they did. We closed off all but 9 and replaced the old gate valves with modern day brass ball valves. Then off with the old prop as it was badly in need of a new one. We moved to the rudder; off with it I said, as it was in worse shape than we originally thought. Water logged and damaged we cut it in half then rebuilt it from the inside out. After 30 days on the hard in the yard and a new bottom job, rudder and prop; oh, and all those new thru-hulls we splashed her for a short tow over to Waterford Harbor Marina where she will stay until she's a beautiful sailing ship once again. Once she's back you will be able to charter her on Galveston Bay through Windsong Charters. Now how about a little history? She was built in Taipei, Taiwan in 1978 by the Formosa Boat Building Company. The Wanderer got her name from the movie production company. Previously she was named Sea Deborah III, Le Charmay, Billie's Pearl, Lade Hawk and finally The Wanderer which is the perfect name for her future life! Hollywood created an amazing interior and wonderful story about the vessel. Many people want to tour her to see the engine room, have their photo taken in the shower and also see the carved bedposts with the initials of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. You'll have to visit her yourself to see what might be true or possibly a little exaggerated! Many people also want souvenirs from her such as her hand carved doors...whatever people. One of the reasons the new owner selected Dockside Boat Repair for the re-fit was because we would modernize her but will still keep her classic historic look. Stay tuned for future before and after photos on her amazing transformation. Captain Bob

Martin Harvey is a middle-aged office worker who lives in Chicago with his wife, Katherine, 16-year-old daughter, Caroline, and 11-year-old son, Ben. When he learns his recently deceased uncle has bequeathed him a 60' yacht once owned by Clark Gable, he decides to take his family to the island of St. Pomme de Terre ("St. Potato") to retrieve it so he can sell it. Katherine resists the idea, but agrees after Caroline announces she has just gotten engaged.

When the Harveys arrive at the island, they discover that the yacht, the Wanderer , is in terrible condition. Upon hearing this, the yacht broker cancels his plan to send an experienced captain to help them sail it to Miami, and instead hires a local sailor, Captain Ron Rico, a one-eyed man with a very laid back attitude, and Navy veteran who claims to have piloted the USS Saratoga . He launches immediately when he sees the car he arrived in roll off the dock and sink. Its owner arrives at the dock and shoots at him.

Captain Ron takes Ben's money in a game of Monopoly, giving him beer to drink and charging him for it later, but shows loyalty to Martin, who he refers to as "Boss". Martin, who doesn't like him, calls him "Moron" in his diary, and believes that he doesn't know what he's doing.

The Harveys decide to stop off in the Caribbean, but learn that Captain Ron doesn't know how to navigate. While on a random island, Martin decides to go on a nature hike, but runs into guerrillas led by General Armando. Captain Ron bargains for Martin's freedom by giving them a lift to the next island, and receiving some firearms in return to fight off pirates. This angers Martin, as he declares there will be no firearms on his yacht and tosses them overboard, before realizing that without them, he is going to have to give the guerrillas a lift.

In the yacht's cabin, Katherine shows Martin the initials of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard carved in the bedpost. They are so excited that they share their feelings and have passionate sex.

When they arrive at their next destination, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Martin and Katherine are arrested for smuggling the guerrillas. Caroline and Ben party with the locals and Captain Ron, which ends with Caroline getting a tattoo, Ben breaking his glasses, and Captain Ron losing his glass eye. Martin and Katherine are released from jail, but forced to leave that night. Martin decides to leave Captain Ron behind and they encounter pirates who steal the yacht, and are stuck floating in a raft.

The Harveys land in Cuba and discover the yacht there. The pirates find them, but with the help of Captain Ron, they are able to escape with the yacht. Captain Ron learns that they underrate Martin, and he decides to play hurt, forcing Martin to take control of the escape. Using the skills that Captain Ron taught them, they are able to get the sails up after the engine breaks from lack of oil to distance themselves from the pirates. The United States Coast Guard fires at the pirates, scaring them away and creates a safe passage to Miami.

They arrive in Miami and part ways with Captain Ron. As they sail to their destination, they decide to turn the yacht around and keep it. In the final scene, Captain Ron appears to have cleaned up his appearance and has quickly taken on a new role as a captain for a wealthy couple and their small motorboat. Notably he is no longer wearing an eye patch. This has led many to believe that he is in fact a con man who has assumed many different appearances across his travels. What exactly he gained from the Harvey Family Con, remains something of a mystery.

Release [ ]

Box office [ ].

The film grossed $22.5 million, against its budget of $24 million. [2]

Critical reception [ ]

The film premiered on September 18, 1992. It was panned for putting Russell in the comedic role and Short in the serious one, [3] [4] while others say that Russell's fun performance as the irresponsible and sometimes unsympathetic yacht captain carried it through its flaws. [5] [6] It has a score of 24% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 21 reviews with an average rating of 4.2 out of 10. [7] It has long, however, found a niche among sailors. [8]

Salisbury and Sisto were each nominated for a Young Artist Award.

Popularity resurgence [ ]

Given the dearth of nautical comedies, there has been a recent resurgence in interest in the film. [9] This has led to further analysis of the controversial ending.

Directed by Thom Eberhardt

Martin just wanted a nice, quiet family vacation. Instead, he got... Captain Ron

When mild-mannered Martin Harvey finds out that he has inherited a vintage yacht, he decides to take his family on a Caribbean vacation to retrieve the vessel. Upon arriving on a small island and realizing that the ship is in rough shape, Martin and his family end up with more than they bargained for as the roguish Captain Ron signs on to sail the boat to Miami. It doesn't take long before Ron's anything-goes antics get the Harveys into plenty of trouble.

I think we all agree that it's criminal that Pacino in SCENT OF A WOMAN beat out Denzel in MALCOLM X at the Oscars that year, but maybe the real scandal is that anyone beat Kurt Russell?

From around 1993 to 1999, when we moved to a new house, my dad had a post-it note on the side of his desk with two movie recommendations from one of my aunts. I’ll never forget it. It’s the greatest post-it note of all time. In his perfect handwriting, he wrote two lines:

FUNNY ADULT: My Cousin Vinny FUNNY FAMILY: Captain Ron

Still accurate after all these years.

You know what surprised me most about ‘Captain Ron’? Titties. There are titties in ‘Captain Ron.’

Yes, it is an aerial shot so it is not the best angle, but I definitely saw nipples make an appearance at least twice.

Was ‘Titanic’ the last PG-13 movie with titties? I feel like they allowed the world to see that, then they took PG-13 titties away from us for good.

Anyways, this is the type of movie that could have ended with Grandpa Simpson arriving on a motorcycle exclaiming that he was going to ‘haul ass to lollapalooza!’

Kurt Russell’s fake eye was pretty awesome though.

Wait. So at the end when Capt. Ron is speeding toward that ocean liner? Did he kill himself and two strangers? Is that how the movie ends?

I love Kurt Russell. Kurt is (mostly) a good actor, a ton of fun to watch, suave, and a handsome guy. As a secondary preface I also really like Jerry Lewis and his innovative comedic talents (he has nothing to do with this film, wait for it).

This is the Jerry Lewis performance of Kurt Russell's career, except only all the gratingly negative aspects of the innately shrill comedian. Which is surprising since Russell already starred in two family-oriented Nutty Professor spinoffs ( The Computer That Wore Tennis Shoes  and The Strongest Man in the World ).

Take that for what it is, boss .

A superyacht captain shares 3 things people who want to charter a luxury vessel should know

  • Vacationing on a superyacht may sound like it's all Champagne and sunbathing.
  • But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind.
  • Yachting is a summer pastime with risks and nuances for clients and crew.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez soaking up the sun. Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian's wedding . Beyoncé's carefree jump into the ocean.

One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length.

While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian.

For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board.

Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s.

Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel.

Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht.

Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house

One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says.

"The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be."

She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste.

"You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said.

Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said.

"If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active."

Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety

Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety.

"I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said.

Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock.

A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking.

"You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said.

The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel.

The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on.

Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7

"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said.

But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it."

Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea.

"I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go."

Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night."

While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country.

"It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew."

While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."
