coypool princess yachts

Did you know?

From their beginnings in 1965, over 17,000 Princess Yachts have been manufactured. Now, they build an amazing average of 270 yachts a year. This means that every few days another yacht is completed which is incredible!

Over 21 miles of cable go into a 40 M yacht. If you laid the cable along the road, it would take you all the way from Plymouth to Totnes.

In the furniture factory, the team processes 500 sheets of wood a day. The sheets of walnut or oak are produced in Holland and the trees they are taken from are hand-chosen for Princess.

Around 7 times each month, roads in Plymouth are closed between 2.30am – 4.30am so the yachts can be pulled around the roundabouts and down streets in the wrong direction!

The biggest boat has only 13 mm height clearance under the Marsh Mills flyover and in warm weather the tyres need to be deflated to make it under and through.

Princess Yachts own 4 police cars which are driven by police officers (on non-emergency duty) to escort the boats during the early morning moves.

Princess Yachts

Princess Yachts are famous for building some of the world’s finest and most luxurious yachts, which they manufacture at their  5 different sites in Plymouth and sell all over the world.  The company is extremely proud of their Plymouth heritage – their logo includes the words “Crafted in Plymouth”. 80-85% of everything you see on a Princess Yacht has been made in-house by the company’s Plymouth teams.

“Where there’s warm weather and water, you will find Princess Yachts. There’s always a carefully crafted part of Plymouth floating around some of the most beautiful places in the world”   Antony Sheriff, Executive Chairman, Princess Yachts

Princess Yachts is also honoured to be the first luxury yacht manufacturer to officially partner with the Marine Conservation Society. Since 2016 they have worked together to support marine environments, preserving reefs and sea life for present and future generations.

Typical job roles include: Marine Engineering, Fabrication/Welding, Carpentry, Computer Aided Design,Composites, HR, Learning and Development and Finance

Apprenticeships: Princess Yachts has a variety of four year apprenticeship courses available each year including; Marine Engineering, Carpentry/boat building, CAD Development, Fabricating and Welding, Business Administration, HR, Finance, IT and Composites. Find out more about the company’s Apprenticeship Scheme below in the Get to Know Princess Yachts section.

LUXURY MOTOR YACHTS AND SUPER YACHTS

Princess Yachts craft a range of highly developed luxury yachts, which are said to be the envy of the yacht manufacturing and retail community.

At 40 metres long, the Princess 40M is the company’s largest yacht to date and is classed as a super-yacht. It has the luxury price tag of £18 million! Across the yacht’s three decks, there are sunbathing hideaways, a spa bath, dining areas and even a walk-in beach club.

Click here to take a 360 tour of the Princess 40M and see the amazing craftsmanship of the Plymouth yacht building teams.

The M Class super-yachts are constructed in one of Plymouth’s most historically important areas at South Yard, which is a former naval yard dating back to the 17th century and where the city’s dockyard originally began.

CAREFULLY DESIGNED INTERIORS

As you can see here, the Y85 caters for relaxation as well as speed. The flybridge has a fantastic deck for enjoying the sights and sounds of the ocean and marinas while the saloon creates an elegant space for seating and dining.

There is a careful design process for every element of a Princess Yacht. Each newly designed yacht goes through a Mock-Up stage. This is a one-to-one scale replication of the final yacht to test exactly how the new layout works, to check head heights, door way functionality, and how the furniture and materials will feel in the space. You can watch a film about the Mock-Up Stage here.

NEW PERFORMANCE SPORTS YACHTS

The R Class is the brand new range of performance sports yachts by Princess. The R35 pictured here, is a revolutionary yacht which was designed in conjunction with Ben Ainslie Racing Technologies (yes – Ben Ainslie – one of the most successful Olympics sailors of all time!) and legendary Italian car designers, Pininfarina.

This yacht can reach a top speed of 50 knots. Only the fastest swimming fish in the world could keep up with the R Class yachts.

To confuse the eye and help conceal its design until its official launch, the prototype R35 was actually covered in dazzle camouflage which was created by Plymouth College of Art student, Katie Sheppard. Take a look at the sea trial of the prototype R35 in its dazzle camouflage design here.

Experiencing a Historic Ship-building Town with Princess Yachts

Sep 20, 2022 | Magazine , News , Princess Yachts | 1 comment

Plymouth, England is home to Princess Yachts Limited and all their ancillary operations. Plymouth is also recognized as having the largest operational naval base in Western Europe, originally built in 1690. Their history dates back even further to the early eleventh century as a major port and trading hub, called Sutton. King Henry VI officially changed the name of the town to Plymouth in 1440—after over 200 years of this being the town’s nickname. Plymouth is derived from ‘Mouth of the River Plym’ which lies to her East, and River Tamar to her West.

The historical allure of Plymouth is undeniable for anyone who visits, and Princess Yachts’ hospitality ensures the visitors are frequent and plentiful. Bluewater Sales Professional Chuck Meyers returned from his fourth visit to Plymouth in the spring of 2022 and explained, “You could spend weeks there on end and not see it all!” For Princess dealers and their new build customers, factory visits are highly encouraged. Meyers enjoyed hosting customers who are currently building a new Y72 with an expected summer 2022 delivery.

Princess Y72

Taking cues from the larger Y-Class yachts, the Y72 is completed to the highest standards and offers several interior finish options. The refined hull form and twin MAN V12 engines provide sprightly acceleration, exceptional handling and commendable fuel consumption. The full-length hull glazing adds to the Y72’s stunning appearance while providing generous amounts of natural light to her well-appointed cabins and full-beam master stateroom.

The spacious salon is designed for both entertaining and relaxation, offering a free flow of movement from the covered cockpit dining area up to the helm, thanks to a continuously flat flooring surface and large sliding glass doors. Above, the expansive flybridge provides two unique seating areas along with a wet bar to port. The aft section of the flybridge offers a standard sun bed that acts as a continuation of the U-shaped seating forward. Owners can opt instead for individual sun lounges or utilize the space for a crane and tender storage.

The open bow offers a retreat for sunbathers and star gazers alike thanks to the large convertible lounge and separate seating area with table. The sweeping lines of the cabin and flybridge hardtop provide a sleek look whether tied to the dock or maneuvering through open water.

This exciting member of the Y-Class family offers a tremendous amount of entertaining space for a yacht of this size while featuring the highest standard in luxury finishes we have come to expect from Princess Yachts.

John McDevitt

Great article! Kathy and Erich are great people and I am pleased to know that I helped bring them into the Bluewater/Princess fold. I think I know the guy in the UVA hat as well. I sold him his first Princess too!

Princess Yachts Reviews

Princess Yachts logo

The story began on Newport Street in Plymouth in 1965. It was here that ex-Naval officer David King and two friends started a company called Marine Projects.

Their first model, which was named Project 31 , was built on the hull of a Senior 31 and fitted out in a rented shed. This historic yacht was restored in 2015 as part of the yard’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

From such humble beginnings, Marine Projects made huge advances over the following years. This led to the 1969 launch of the Princess 32 – the first model to bear the name.

The 1970s saw Princess branch out into the burgeoning flybridge market with the Princess 37 V Hull. Designed by John Bennett and launched at the London Boat Show, this model was fitted with high performance inboard diesel engines.

Six years later the company began work on the Princess 30DS with a promising young designer called Bernard Olesinski. His name has since become a byword for the deep-vee hull. 1981 saw a buyout of the company, with South African businessman Graham J Beck taking the helm – he would remain the majority shareholder for the next 27 years.

In 1984 the launch of the Princess 286 Riviera cemented this company’s status in the high-speed sports cruiser market. Its twin 270hp Volvo AQ271/DP engines gave a top speed of more than 30 knots. Just a year later, the company followed up this success with the launch of the Princess 45, which was the largest production yacht in the UK – and there was clearly an appetite for larger yachts, as more than 400 hulls produced over the next nine years.

Export and expansion

The V-Class range was rolled out in 1994 with the arrival of the Princess V39 , which in its latest guise is still one of the company’s best sellers more than 20 years later. A 1995 tie-up with Viking Yachts of Gretna, New Jersey saw Princess break into the American market.

The 1990s also saw the yard move into a new purpose-built headquarters, still on Newport Street, as well as acquiring a new site in nearby Coypool.

But wasn’t until 2001 that the company was officially renamed as Princess Yachts International, with production split over three sites in Devonport, Plympton and Lee Mill. This year also saw the launch of Princess’s first M Class superyacht, the Princess 25M.

And in 2008 a buyout by L Capital allowed further expansion, taking the Princess range over the 100ft mark for the first time. This led to another new site – South Yard was leased from the Ministry of Defence for the development of the M Class range in 2009 and Princess was granted the lease for the premises two years later.

The yard is rightly proud of its environmental record, which was underlined in 2011 when Princess became the first British yard to achieve RINA Green Plus (Y) notation for its entire range. More recently, Princess teamed up with the Marine Conservation Society to launch a 2016 book called Enid & Her Magic Yacht, which aims to spread the environmental message to the next generation of seafarers.

Today the Princess Yachts collection ranges from the entry-level V39 sportscruiser to the 131ft tri-deck Princess 40M superyacht . Its yachts are built in a state-of-the-art facility, which spans more than 100,000 square metres. With more than 3,000 staff on its books, Princess Yachts is one of the biggest employers in Plymouth, but also operates in 118 other countries across the world.

All Princess Boats For Sale

Company Based   UK

Year of Formation   1965

Company History The first boat was built in 1965 in the company’s original factory in Newport Street in Plymouth; this boat was called project 31. When the boat was sold further orders were placed and the decision was taken to fit out boats for sale. From this many different boats, models were released and sold. In 1980 Bernard Olesinski designed his first princess which was to be the Princess 30DS. This was the beginning of a great design, which Princess continues to use to this present day. In 1982 the Princess 45 is designed by Olesinski and becomes the largest production motor yacht in the UK. The production of this boat increases from 12 to 36 boats per alum within the first four months of its launch. In 1988 the Marine Projects in Plymouth is awarded the Queens Export Award, from its great export success in the current years. In 1989 a new manufacturing area is built in Plymouth called Language 1.

In 1994 the first V class Sports Yachts are developed. In 1997 their new headquarters at Newport Street is opened. Also at Marine Projects, they purchase a new site Coypool. An extension is also added to Language 1 to create Language 2 for the increasing Sports yachts range. Also in 1997 Princess releases the first electronic diesel engine in Europe. In 2002 further extensions are built onto Newport Street and Coypool. In 2005 Princess celebrates its 40years and its exports now account for 90% of its sales.

Featured Boat - Princess V65   This V class Sport Yacht was developed in 2002. This yacht features 4 berths with a beam of 16’8’’ (5.08m) with two engines. The UK’s largest luxury boat maker Princess Yachts has begun a Government-backed on-the-spot Covid testing programme for its staff.

The company, which employs about 3,000 workers in Plymouth, has launched its rapid testing programme in partnership with the Department of Health and Social Care.

The project is part of the Government’s continuing UK-wide drive to increase the availability of testing.

Princess Yachts received its first batch of lateral flow tests, provided by NHS Test and Trace, in the second full week of February 2020, as part of a programme to enable testing in private industries.

It has now begun testing staff, under medical supervision, at its site in Coypool, with the aim of extending it to its other Plymouth sites.

Lateral flow tests are easy-to-use swab tests that provide a coronavirus test result within 30 minutes, without needing lab analysis. The Government sees them as a fast and simple way to test people who do not have symptoms of Covid-19 but who may be carrying the virus and in danger of spreading it.

Matthew Clark, director of health, safety and environment at Princess Yachts, said: “At Princess Yachts, there have been very clear safety protocols in place since Spring 2020, that require all staff to adhere to PPE wearing, social distancing, following one-way systems, hand washing and sanitising.

“Princess have invested an enormous amount of time, effort and money into putting these protocols in place so that employees are kept safe in work environment that’s as Covid-19 secure as possible.

“Utilising new technologies, such as rapid lateral flow tests at Princess, will add to maintaining a safe environment for our employees, whilst at the same time, be key in aiding the Government’s overall plans to rollout rapid testing nationwide.

“This testing programme will allow testing large numbers of people in a short period of time, with test results made available quickly, even on the spot.”

Ramping up the fight against coronavirus

About one in three people who are infected with Covid-19 have no symptoms so could be spreading the disease without knowing it.

Broadening testing to identify those showing no symptoms will mean finding positive cases more quickly, and break any potential chain of transmission.

From the start of the pandemic, the Government has been working around the clock with a range of partners to fight Covid-19. The use of multiple testing technologies could significantly improve the detection of positive cases, so people can isolate themselves and prevent the spread of the disease.

Health Minister Lord Bethell said: “We’ve already come so far since first setting up a national testing programme at an unprecedented pace to help counter Covid -19, but we continue to strive to go further, faster.

“Rapid testing technologies hold the key to the next phase of our ambition to see testing available to people across the country. “I’m delighted that Princess Yachts are working with us to use the latest technology in Plymouth, and I look forward to seeing the fruits of their labour, both in helping target the virus locally, and helping find ways to roll this technology out further soon.”

Baroness Dido Harding, interim executive chair of the National Institute for Health Protection, said: “The innovation and evolution of NHS Test and Trace continues to improve our detection of positive cases and I am incredibly proud of the speed at which we have been able to roll out these initiatives to protect more people more quickly.

“This is a national effort and a partnership of public and private sectors is instrumental in our response to this virus.

“Around one in three people with Covid-19 don’t display symptoms, meaning you can infect others unknowingly.

“This rapid testing programme with Princess Yachts is one of many that will inform our understanding of how rapid asymptomatic testing can be operationalised in the real world to protect those at high risk, find the virus and help us go back to as normal a way of life as possible.”
