My experience of the Fusion 40 has been racing against "Blonde Moment" recently in the Hog's Breath Cafe series, in "Tribute" an Oram Mango 38 design. I had expected the Fusion to be very fast, and very difficult for us to beat, but it didn't turn out to be. In one passage race, which took us around 4 hours, we beat "Blonde Moment" by over 2 hours.

I noted this post on Cruiser's forum in 2007. Is the really considerd "recent"? Maybe time for a rematch.

Anon, I see what you mean, it was re-posted from 2007, and I consider it to be close to being an unpaid ad. Although I will leave it in place. Fast is relative, and depends on rig, weather, electronic tools, and skill of the crew. Overall I'm impressed by the Fusion.

Have you checked out the other Fusion being built there? Not buy the same builder but being into electronics you may find it interesting. The guy building it use to be an avionics guy.

Thanks Paul, I'm overdue on a follow up here, and I will check the other one out.

Fusion cats are generally well built but I have inspected a couple of vessels that have been finished very poorly..

Multihull of the year

Garry is a naval architect from New Zealand who carries out his prolific activities from his offices in Queensland (Brisbane, on the east coast of Australia). The Lidgard office is unknown in Europe, but is well-known elsewhere for its global approach to boat design. Racing prototypes, neo-classical monohulls, multihulls of all sizes, and motor boats are created at a sustained rhythm by Garry’s pencil, and he upholds a pragmatic vision of his profession. Coming from a family which counts several generations of builders, it is not surprising that he is interested in ‘do-it-yourself’.

The decoration of this Fusion is really successful. An example to be followed for many builders.

Why not do it yourself?

Phil Weld and Dick Newick dreamed of it (the constant camber) to allow poor fishing populations to possess fast boats, which would exempt them from dependence on fuel and engines. Derek Kelsall took up the idea (the KSS) and adapted it to the creation of cruising catamarans, from his new base in New Zealand. The Anglo-Saxon culture (USA-Australia-New Zealand) seemed to be more receptive to the concept of individual construction than Southern Europe, which had almost forgotten this idea since the rush to the water in the 70s The result of this attitude wasn’t long in coming, and in Australia and New Zealand, excellent multihulls built by their owners can be found everywhere, and their second-hand prices are often moderate. In France, this practice is now marginal, reduced to confidentiality by the zealous attitude of the protective authorities and the negative word of mouth from the commercial circuits who are protecting their fortress.

Quick Look: Fusion 40 USA

  • By Jeremy McGeary
  • Updated: September 12, 2007

fusion 40 catamaran build

Australia-based Fusion Catamarans has opened a production facility in Sarasota, Florida, where it is currently building the Fusion 40 USA to individual customer order. This Gary Lidgard design shows a profile of gentle curves capped by a rigid cockpit roof that flows in all dimensions from the saloon. More curves direct the transom steps to permit boarding from inboard of the hulls rather than over the sterns. A relatively short forward bridgedeck connected to the bow crossbar by a catwalk supports the designer’s claim that this cat is built to deliver performance. The self-tacking jib suggests you won’t have to work hard to obtain it.

The interior plans show a master suite to port and in the starboard hull a queen suite forward and a study aft. The saloon has a 360-degree view and opening windows to create cross ventilation. The builder can make modifications “to reflect the needs and tastes” of each client.

Bold, stylish and impeccably finished, the Fusion 40 kitset catamaran from Fusion Catamarans New Zealand brings to market a variety of build options from hull and decks to motor-away and sail-away turnkey packages

fusion 40 catamaran build

Specifications

  • Designed by Australian-based New Zealand designer Gary Lidgard as a kitset build project, the Fusion 40 is an ultra-modern lightweight catamaran.
  • Fusion Catamarans New Zealand can offer the Fusion 40 in kitset form as hull and decks only or as a motor or full sail option with a variety of layout options.
  • The Fusion 40 would provide the ideal stepping stone for keeler sailors looking to move up into a performance-orientated catamaran with the space and comfort of two keelers.
  • With a clean and unobstructed deck layout, the Fusion 40 is less complicated and easier to manage than many similar size keelers.
  • The catamaran is a stylish off-shore cruiser with all-round sailing capability and live-aboard comfort, and represents outstanding value at less than replacement cost.

Fusion Catamarans’ New Zealand agent and boatbuilder Denis Bettany says the Fusion 40 is a catamaran that should naturally appeal to the experienced mono-hull sailor looking for a well-mannered and easily-managed yacht that performs in all wind ranges.

The kitset option has progressively grown to include a full set of internal bulkheads and moulds to suit both charter operators and private ownership. Because the cat was specifically designed as a kitset, manufacturing tolerances are exacting with the moulds computer-designed and machined using state of the art five-axis router technology.

Construction is composite of vinyl ester and vinyl epoxy resins utilising vacuum infusion molding technology resulting in extremely fair, light and super-strong components and a gel coat finish comparable to any production yard.

The yacht is designed and manufactured to CE Class A certification standards.

Bettany says because of the composite nature of the hull and deck assembly, the Fusion is realistically beyond the skills of the backyard builder and would recommend that initial assembly at least be carried out with the help of an experienced boatbuilder.

The Fusion 40 catamaran has a 7.2m (23’6″) beam and relatively high topsides.

All the primary sheets and control lines including main halyard and reefing lines run aft through clutches to the cockpit. The headsail is also self-tacking so there is nothing complicated about the boat at all. It’s easily handled by a couple and with twin 29hp Yanmar diesel engines on sail drives manoeuvring the cat around in the marina is straightforward and predictable.

Lidgard has created indoor-outdoor flow from cockpit to saloon with twin glass sliding doors and full-width aft picture windows giving 360-degree views around the boat whether in the saloon or cockpit. The saloon is large and comfortable with U-shaped squabs set around a large high-gloss table with the galley alongside to starboard. Additional counter space and galley storage is built in against the cockpit bulkhead. The combination of leather upholstery, cream vinyl linings, teak and holly floors, polished cappings and Corion counters create a stylish and luxurious retreat.

Access to the cat’s accommodation is via matching timber stairways immediately inside the saloon, with the master cabin and quest cabin forward of the companionways, with matching en suites further forward with electric toilets and hot showers.

A third full-size bathroom and day head has been built aft on the port side.

The navigation station is located immediately inside the port companionway and features a full chart-size table flanked by an eight-inch C-series Raymarine radar/plotter/sounder, BEP switch panels and breakers and a repeater unit for the Raymarine instruments at both helm stations.

A combination of full headroom, topside windows and white gelcoat finish adds up to a light, airy, space finished in teak cappings and floors and cream upholstered ceiling liners.

Domestic galley appliances include separate upright fridge and freezer, oven and microwave and an option for an automatic washer/drier.

Gary Lidgard’s Fusion 40 catamaran model was designed after lengthy consultation with multihull owners worldwide. The result is a mid sized cat with features that ideally suit an owner who needs good cruising comfort along with a light and relatively nimble performance. Gary Litgard’s design for the Fusion 40 was truly a fusion of the best Australian catamaran design concepts. Fusions have a central electric winch in the cockpit as innovated by Lock Crowther and commonly seen on Catanas. They have an Owner’s Hull layout with huge aft owner’s shower & head very much like that of the successful Perry 43. And they have a ‘barn door’ cockpit/salon integration and protective hard bimini similar to Seawinds. Litgard added a galley up and surprisingly good CAD assisted ergonomics to the package and integrated everything into a sleek and seakindly profile.

Fusions are hull, deck, and bulkhead kit boats. The workmanship, interiors, wiring, equipment, and overall quality varies depending on the builder.

ALACRITY is an excellent example of Fusion Catamarans. Fusion catamarans came in kit form from Australia using computer design and foam core / glass w/Vinylester resin (so no osmosis). The sections were then shipped in 2 40ft containers to the builder. Alacrity was built by expert craftsman in the former Manta Catamaran factory in Sarasota Florida.

Schionning G-Force 1400 Build

We spoke to Andrew Rogers, a professional boat builder from New South Wales, Australia, recently about the Schionning G-Force 1400 . Andrew has built 6 Schionning Cats, he’s an active member on the Schionning Owner’s and Builders Group on Facebook.

The G-Force 1400 is one of the best known of the Schionning Designs with many of them racing in Australian and Asian regattas. The design is available in a Cruise variant (G-Force 1400 C) which carries more payload and has more space for cruising toys. If you are interested in building your own catamaran, you might also want to read our Fusion 40 article with Shane and Carmen.

Interview with Andrew Rogers

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your plans. Why did you decide to build a Schionning catamaran? I’m a Professional Boatbuilder who has built 6 Schionning cats and been involved with 3 more, also built 2 of his mast designs.

Which model did you last build? The last cat I built was a Schionning G-Force 14C which was set up for single handed sailing with electric drives

Were there any other brands you considered? An Outremer catamaran, but I decided it was too heavy and slow.

Did you consider using a yard for the build? Any you would recommend? Yes, Noosa marine or myself.

Did you consider buying a second hand yacht? No.

How long did she take to build? 2 1/2 years because of complications, I wasn’t there at the start and had to pick the projects up after someone that was not able to finish the project.

fusion 40 catamaran build

Can you share some of the challenges you have faced /expect to face on a project like this? Building the boat under staffed and short on good Boatbuilders in an isolated community.

How much space do you need for a build like this? We had a 18 metre x 16 metre insulated shed that could have been 3 metres wider to make life a little less cramped

In your opinion, what kind of experience is required to successfully pull off a project such as this? Attention to detail and a drive to succeed

Are you completing the build on your own or do you have a team? Completed with a team…it’s a long road, it’s about a 25,000 man hour job to complete successfully.

Can you give us an idea of the rough price differential between a self build and a comparable manufactured cat? That’s a hard question for me, I have never priced a manufactured boat directly against a totally self built one.. but a professionally built boat that is customised for the owner will start at about 20% dearer and go up in my experience

What is the best thing about the design? If the weight is kept out of these boats they sail remarkably well, we can sail over 20 knots in 15 knots true with code 3 and main reaching and in 5 to 8 knots we achieve 6 knots up wind, production boats don’t even come close without motoring

What are the main advantages of a self-build catamaran like this over a production cat? Customisation.

fusion 40 catamaran build

Is there a design feature you don´t like? What would you change if anything? We widen the cabin top to get better access into the holes and widen the decks to make it more user friendly.

What are the “Must Have” options for the boat over and above the essentials? eg electric winch, engine size, folding props, heating, watermaker, inverter, solar, gen set etc…. Keep things simple and light and don’t get caught up with all the bells and whistles as you will be way too heavy. A heavy boat means a slow boat. Also forget about electric winches, We use an electric winch handle made by Milwaukee Tools….This saves a lot of weight and expense and turns every winch into an electric winch

How did you configure the helm? Twin outboard homes so we can see the sails and ease of docking. Was configured with dynema to quadrants each side with a link bar between, which gives you nice light responsive steering.

How will you configure the living space – is there room for personalisation here? Keep it simple, light and airy, and don’t fill it full of lockers to store excess stuff for the sake of it that you will never use

What kind of average speed on passage are you aiming for? Over 10 kts

How is the Schionning Owner´s community? Good.

Anything else you would add to help people thinking of building a Schionning? Don’t get conned into going too big!

Boat: Fountain Pajot, Helia 44 Evolution
‘KANGAROO’. Good things come in small packages.

Not strictly speaking a yacht review but nevertheless a long journey worth following.*

‘Kangaroo’ first came to my attention in around 2011 when it was up after having made quite a splash in the media at the time – before Instagram and YouTube got started.

I was looking to and this cat ticked all the boxed I thought needed ticking plus it had a really cool paintjob.

Alas, circumstances changed and a didn’t eventuate but ‘Kangaroo’ kept hopping about, ploughing the oceans many times over.*

Eventually, I sight of her until last month when I was invited to go for a 2 day in the waters off Adelaide, . The ‘Kangaroo’ has made it home.

out of a box:

By way of background, ‘Kangaroo’ is a 2009 built*FUSION 40*Catamaran designed by Gary Lidgard.

Originally designed in 2003, this Fusion 40 is actually 11.67m long, 7.2m wide and weighs in a 5.2T (plus whatever you carry). It has a of 0.8m and 0.8m bridgedeck clearance. Standard sail plain is 90sqm with mains and self-tacking or up to 180sqm with a Code 0 or for downwind runs.

All components are produced in a kit form, at the time in , now in . The lot neatly fits into two 40’ containers. From there the kit was shipped to for assembly by a professional and launched in 2008.

Her first appearance was at the Grand Pavois de la Rochelle in September 2008 to promote the new brand of this ‘semi kit boat’ in . Assembly skills required were what I would consider slightly beyond those available to the average ‘backyarder’.

However, it allowed a boatyard to produce a high quality, lightweight cat without the need for expensive production as all the part had already been produced in a controlled .

This almost sounds like a promotion but I thought at the time, and still do, that the was pretty cool. out of a box. Customizable and compact, yet big enough to do some serious sailing and even . And let’s be honest, this is a sweet looking cat!

The ‘serious sailing’ part has certainly been proven by the original owners. Two and a trip via to Australia, putting some 30,000 miles on that boat.

Cruising off South Australia:

Fast forward to 2020. A little less worldly, our overnight trip was in the waters of Adelaide in South Australia. I have always seen this stretch of ocean as a somewhat limited cruising ground due to the perceived lack of protected in the area, cold and sharks. I was going to be proven wrong.*

We started off from the Wirrina Cove Marina, a somewhat failed development approx. 1h30min drive south of Adelaide. The advantage; it’s close to beautiful Kangaroo Island and only a short, 35nm hop across to Edithburgh and the Eyre Peninsula beyond.

With 20-25kts of SSE winds, heading NW made for some swift and comfortable sailing on this 40 foot cat. 1st reef in the mains and full self-tacking gave the boat a good balance at a max speed of 12kts with almost no tide.*

The were reasonable new, so trimming was straight forward. We used the Code 0 earlier on in the day but as the apparent speed climbed past 18kts we thought it was time to give it away.

Our for the night was a large anchorage just south of Edithburgh near Sultana Point. There are some large shoals of the coast, so accurate was required, but the area is well marked. The anchorage was surprisingly calm throughout the night with predominantly southerly winds at around 15kts. The Cruising Yacht Club provides numerous balls, giving peace of mind during the night.

The evening was spent of the generously proportioned and protected rear with the upstairs close by. No Australian boat would be complete without a BBQ on the rear, so steak and red wine were in order.

I never spent a night on one of these rather light-weight Fusion Cats before and am used to my much heavier Fountaine Pajot*Helia 44 ‘No Shoes’. There was an expectation of some noisy bobbing around, but not so. I slept like a brick in the midship on a large double , facing in the direction of travel.

Even though ‘Kangaroo’ is only 4 feet shorter than my Helia, there is substantially less space inside. Compared to the large bathroom I am used to, this was a somewhat cramped experience. This cat is set up with an owners on the port side, so their bathroom is a little more comfortable. Maybe two owners hulls would be the answer.

Whilst on the topic of size and space, I feel it’s necessary to point out that this cat is by no means small. There is ample of room for and visitors.*

At just above 5T, these cats are a compact, fun machine which are easily handed. It’s responsive with a good motion in the and minimal (almost none) slamming under the bridgedeck as we found out the next day, sailing upwind on our return to Wirrina Cove.*

Below are some pictures of Kangaroo’s just after she was launched in 2008.

We decided on a quick stop at Troubridge Island to have a look at it’s historic lighthouse. There were a bunch of kite surfers having some fun on the island the previous day, so what could go wrong …

Well … you have to remember; Australia runs on rules. Many rules. And if you miss one, you will be told. Now, there are always a number of ways you can be told that you might have missed a . Unfortunately in this case, “people management” apparently wasn’t in the manual. We thought we were infiltrating an area of national .*

Calm prevailed, we were allowed to take a pic picture of this beautiful lighthouse and the resident seal (not navy) and left on amicable terms. For future reference,*Troubridge Island*is National Park, no secret there, but you will need prior permission to go there and the approval process takes 10 day.*

At the caretaker’s defense, we could have read the fine print prior to departure!

So, onwards with the sailing. Another day of good, steady winds, building up to 18kts. Even though it was straight on the nose for the course we wanted to take.*

Falling off 40 degrees quickly made the Kangaroo jump across the pond at 8kts, the daggerboards certainly help reduce the drift substantially. Before we knew, the cat was tied up again at Wirrina Cove.

How did the ‘Kangaroo’ shape up after 11 years at sea?* * Not bad at all.*

Structurally it’s a very sound yacht. The shell held up extremely well and will for a long time to come. At the time, many ‘experts’ questioned the wisdom of gluing prefabricated together but alas, not a crack anywhere. still in good shape.*

The windows all needed replacing recently; most hatches are still the original ones.*

Electrically, the owner told me, it was a disaster when they took over the yacht and needed a lot of fixing within the first 2 years. They used some type of early C-bus system but its didn’t really last the distance.* I didn’t get a chance to ask the question if a more trained agent would have been able to rectify the issues.*

Like any yacht that’s not being used frequently, the Kangaroo suffered from a lack of TLC at times when work-life gets in the way. This can quickly catch up, however the owner is making a great effort to get back on top of things.*

So apart from some cosmetics and issues, this little cat held up pretty well. It certainly very nicely and I am hoping for another invite…
