Stratos Yacht: Boss of the sea

A resounding scoop: at MASTERS EXPO the design of Lengers Yachts' first own ship was launched: the Stratos Dutch Built 50. “For those who want the best of the best.” Director-owner Bas Lengers about the realization of his dream.

During the 2021 edition of MASTERS EXPO, I was at the Lengers Yachts stand in conversation with Bas Lengers. This was interrupted by an employee who excitedly shouted “he's here, Bas” and placed a show display case with a model boat on our table. It was actually not intended for my eyes, but now that it was there… “This will be our first own yacht,” the CEO of the now internationally operating yachting company confided to me. “Devised and developed by the top of the Dutch yacht building industry. It should be ready in 2023. I can't say more about it now, except that there was no budget for quality. Everything I think should be in a ship is in it.” It is now ten months later. I am once again sitting at the table with Bas, this time in his office in Muiden, with an opened laptop in front of me on which a video is playing of the arrival of the hull of the yacht in Lelystad, Lengers' new yard, but more about that later. “This was quite a moment, you know. The first child is born!”

Highest quality standards

Bas does not hide the fact that it has always been his dream to launch his own ship. And now it's here: the Stratos. “I felt that the market was missing a tough and robust ship that is truly seaworthy and built at superyacht level. A ship that allows you to go out in all weather conditions, an SUV on the water. I dare say with certainty that the Stratos Dutch Built 50 is the most seaworthy ship in its class. It boasts the highest quality standards, CE classification A, which means it can handle wind force of more than 8 on the Beaufort scale and waves of more than 4 meters in height. Hence the slogan 'Dominate the Seas'.” To make the ship so strong and stiff, Bas explains, a special grid has been designed - which is very unique for a ship of this size. High-end composite materials are used. The entire structure is made of carbon. As a result, the center of gravity is low, which benefits the stability and unique sailing characteristics of the ship. The deep V hull allows the ship to glide through the water like a hot knife cutting through butter. Even with high waves, this ship will not slammed prevent. The specially designed ergonomic ones are also unique pilot seats with shock absorption , to make sailing with high waves comfortable. The freeboard of the gangways is also very high, so that spray water does not stand a chance in extremely high waves. This also allows you to move around the ship safely. To further strengthen the latter, a carbon railing with LED lighting has even been installed. “The Stratos Dutch Built 50 gives an open but at the same time very protected and safe feeling.”

Built to perfection

Bas' vision and personality come together in this almost fifteen meter long ship, which reaches a speed of almost 40 knots. Decades of nautical expertise and passion poured into one superior project. “The name Stratos did not come out of the blue, it is derived from stratosphere. We want to reach that height in terms of quality, functionality and performance. We do use the term 'built to perfection': every detail has been thought of, every aspect has been fully developed, and nothing has been spared. The ship is manufactured by only the best designers and builders from the Netherlands, who excel in their profession and have already proven this. The ship was designed by Bernd Weel and we have a lot to do with it naval architects from Sealevel. We do not do mass production. Construction is limited to five to eight yachts per year. Because we also want to continue to pay full attention to the other beautiful ones brands in our portfolio: Sanlorenzo, Bluegame, Prestige and SACS. In short: construction can be done without time pressure, every detail of the Stratos receives full attention. This can be seen in the finish: it is of a stratospheric high level. The interior, with sleeping space for four people and of supercar GT quality, is extremely refined. There is a whole study in the outdoor cushions alone.”

The highlights of the Stratos are almost inexhaustible. A small selection: The carbon hardtop can be opened, so you can sail in the sun if desired. Something you don't often see on yachts of this length. This also applies to the range of 400 to 450 miles (740 to 830 km): that is an astonishing range for this class. Substantial investments have been made in noise reduction, so that the sea can be optimally enjoyed. For example, the engine compartment and the interior are separated by a soundproof technical insulation room. You can personalize the exterior based on color scheme, with a choice of approximately twenty-five colours, metallic and non-metallic. You can personalize the interior by choosing from three different color styles. And then there is a laundry list of options. Options at superyacht level, including a hydraulic submersible swim platform. “The Stratos is for those who want the best of the best,” says Bas. “And as you have come to expect from Lengers Yachts, we also offer the maximum in terms of service – the customer is completely unburdened. Based on our story, we have already sold the first copies of the Stratos in advance to relations, all very experienced water sports enthusiasts. They immediately felt confident! These boats are delivered in Mallorca, Ibiza, Saint-Tropez, Cannes… And we have also sold one in Amsterdam. So soon you could see the Stratos Dutch Built 50 on the IJ.”

Lengers Marine Center

Lengers Yachts has expanded with a marina in Lelystad especially for the Stratos. What was once Schaap ShipCARE is now called Lengers Marine Center. Leen Schaap and the team will remain with the company, which means that thirty years of expertise and management in the field of composites have also been taken over. “We do the assembly and production in Lelystad. So we have everything in our own hands! In addition to the Stratos yachts being built there, we will also house service, repairs and winter storage in Lelystad. Muiden is becoming more of a gallery, where sales are made.” Are there any further plans for the Stratos? Bas can't say anything about that now. But anyone who knows him a little knows that there is always development going on. I think I'll visit him again next year.”

The worldwide pre-launch of the Stratos Dutch Built 50 took place at MASTERS EXPO, Thursday, December 8.

The purchase and construction of the yachts is in the hands of Lengers

Owners have favourite areas, a dream yacht in twelve months with lengers, travelling in other spheres.

The location could hardly be better. There is a large hall to the right and left, with a car park and manoeuvring area in between, at the end of which is a jetty with a crane. Flybridge motor yachts bob in the Muiden canal here. Muiderslot Castle rises picturesquely in the background. Welcome to Lengers Yachts, the exclusive Prestige and Sanlorenzo dealer for the Benelux countries and Germany as well as the Northern European representative for Sacs maxi RIBs. The family business has also had Stratos on its list for a year now, an exciting and striking weekender series made from robust 50-footers.

Business is booming, the main site just outside Amsterdam is undergoing a major expansion, construction workers are hammering and sanding in the new extension to hall two, directly opposite the showroom. "This will be my office," says Bas Lengers, striding through the bare room and grinning, "a complete renovation." As CEO, he has been managing the company's business for 41 years.

The basis of their business sounds simple: Lengers arranges the purchase and construction of the yachts and receives a commission for this - currently for around 100 transactions per year - "the customer can relax and enjoy their yacht," summarises Pien Hommes from Marketing. But the whole process is also a labour of love. "We take care of everything from A to Z," clarifies Bas Lengers, his magic word is "turnkey". The service package for owners also includes financing and insurance, testing, organising berths and crew as well as chartering through the subsidiary Boatsters Black.

Hans Lengers senior founded his business in 1970, and it has been located in Muiden on the Ijsselmeer since 2004. "We have the open sea on our doorstep here," says Bas, "perfect for seatrials without a speed limit." He himself joined the family business back in 1982, it was obvious: "Ships are my passion." Today, 80 people work at the Muiden and Lelystad sites, plus 15 to 20 on Mallorca, in Cala Nova and Puerto Portals, as well as smaller offices in Belgium and Finland plus representatives in Munich and Düsseldorf. Over the past ten years, he has invested heavily in flying the flag in the German market. "It is the key country for our growth."

The major brands in the current catalogue are relatively new. Prestige and Sacs joined the catalogue around twelve years ago, Sanlorenzo only in 2016, meaning that Lengers covers a broad spectrum, from ribs to superyachts. And they don't just build to order: The company buys around 75 per cent of the Prestige yachts at its own risk and offers the mostly 14 to 18-metre semi-custom yachts to potential customers, while the figure for Sanlorenzo is 40 per cent.

The owners have their own favourite areas. "Around 80 per cent of our prestige yachts stay in the Netherlands," reports Bas, "and 100 per cent of the Sanlorenzos we sell are in the Mediterranean." The same applies to the Sacs, although the Belgians like to move their treasures to the south of France and the Germans prefer to head for Mallorca. Bas Lengers has his eye on them there again, as he himself lives on the island for part of the year, while his brother Hans lives in France and pushes the business from there.

Bas Lengers speaks four languages fluently and loves to mingle with his customers, for example at the annual meeting of the Prestige Owner's Club. "We go out with 20 yachts and head for pre-booked harbours, where there is live music and good food." When the participants return home satisfied, that is the best advertisement for Lengers and the yacht brands.

The boss is actually always on the move. Ten to 15 events a year are organised around the Sanlorenzo brand alone, making it the ideal contact exchange. If a potential customer shows interest in a particular model, an intensive consultation session follows. What exactly should it be, with a flybridge or without? For a family? Once the basis has been established, Lengers travels to Italy with the interested parties, shows them the shipyards and the range of models. "50 to 60 per cent of customers are already owners," he says. Within two hours, he knows which way they are leaning. Once the decision has been made in favour of a yacht type, it's time for the interior. Together they roam the showroom, selecting the furniture and details. During the construction period, Lengers monitors every stage of production and the customers are often present during the flying visits.

The dream yacht will be ready in around twelve months. This means that Lenger's customers are marching past the long waiting list for a Sanlorenzo. "Normally, an SD 118 would be launched in spring 2027," says the boss, "so it's good that we have reserved building slots or have a few yachts in stock." Naturally, he also attends the launch and gives a speech. In Italy, a priest always attends the ceremony, but not so much elsewhere. A good opportunity to demonstrate Nordic humour. "At a handover in Mallorca, I dressed up and appeared in full costume," says Bas, showing the video on his smartphone. The Dutch owner of the SP 110 and the guests had a lot of fun.

After delivery, things get serious again, Lengers tests the yacht and is the first point of contact for warranty claims and service. Contact with the customer remains close, "almost like in a marriage", smiles Bas and knows what he is talking about. His wife Evelien also works in the company.

Being successful as a retailer was not enough for him. "We want to grow," is his credo. "We seize the opportunities that arise and try to make everything possible." This also includes the idea of the shipyard and Stratos. "How great would it be to create our own brand, our own boat?" Bas has been asking himself for years. He had always liked dayboats and weekenders, and he knew how customers imagined something like this anyway. "We liked the idea of transferring the quality of a superyacht to 15 metres," he explains, "we wanted the design of a sport utility vessel, an SUV on the water that you can take out in four-metre waves."

Bas invited a few designers and engineers round to his house and they started drawing at the dining table. "We started with the carbon fibre hardtop, that's the most important thing," says Bas. He then mentions the minimalist design and the strict spatial separation of electrics and motors. "The order book is full," confirms Paul Verheij, the new brand manager for Stratos and former sales manager for Bugatti.

For the DB50, everything is to be "Dutch built", designed by top Dutch designers, built locally and independent of suppliers. The new location in Lelystad, also on the Ijsselmeer, is only half an hour's drive from Muiden. Here, too, construction work is underway on a new hall, and the Lengers Marine Centre with its 70-tonne crane will soon also serve as a repair workshop and winter storage facility.

There are already four DB50 hulls in various stages of production in a hall, and the world premiere of the number one will be in January 2024 at the boot in Düsseldorf. The name "Stratos" is not just a made-up word. "The stratosphere is actually impossible for humans to reach," says Bas Lengers, grinning again. What's it like to be a shipyard manager now? "Different," he says, "but luckily I have a talented team." When asked whether everything he has planned will work out, he just nods. He always looks ahead. "I'm 60, I want to go full throttle for at least another ten, maybe another 20 years."

Lengers yachts acquires schaap shipcare.

Lengers Yachts has acquired Schaap ShipCARE in Lelystad, the Netherlands, which will now operate under the name Lengers Marine Center.

The site will allow Lengers to cater for larger scale projects and will be used to build its forthcoming new yacht brand, Stratos.

Lengers Marine Center has access to a ground floor plan of approximately 18,000 square metres, four service and storage buildings that total around 8,000 square metres and a 70-tonne crane.

Lengers Yachts, based in Muiden in The Netherlands, offers a complete yachts service, from yachts and moorings brokerage, to finance, charter and maintenance. Established by Hans Lengers, Sr. in 1970, the business is now led by Bas Lengers with support from his siblings.

Mr Lengers, Owner of Lengers Yachts, explained that the acquisition is in response to market growth. He said:

“The demand is increasing, and we must anticipate this trend in order to continue our growth. We are very excited to be taking a new path by launching our own yacht brand Stratos.

“With the access to the facility in Lelystad, we unlock the possibility to create more capacity and to have the construction of these ships in our own hands, which I think is very important in these unprecedented times.

“We have extensive and pleasant cooperation with Leen Schaap and our relationship is built on mutual trust. I know what he is capable of and that he is outstanding at doing his job. We are also very enthusiastic about our new, dedicated employees.”

From its base in Lelystad, Schaap ShipCARE is famous for constructing fast ocean-going yachts, two of which were winners of the Ocean Race (formerly known as the Volvo Ocean Race). Schaap ShipCARE also provides yacht refit and renovation services, and the team will remain working at the site and become part of the Lengers Group.

47m Sanlorenzo explorer yacht Lars for sale

The 47-metre Sanlorenzo explorer yacht Lars has been listed for sale with Bas Lengers of Lengers Yachts.

Built in steel and aluminium and delivered in 2020, the "off-roader" 500EXP model was designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design as Sanlorenzo's first true explorer offering. Lars sports a bronze hull and ice-white superstructure with a large aft deck for carrying toys or landing a helicopter. The broker said that Lars was upgraded to be "ice ready" with no limitations. 

Accommodation is for 11 guests in five cabins with quarters for a crew of nine. The main saloon is open plan with a dining area and lounge area divided by cabinetry, and makes subtle use of the bronze colour as seen on her exterior. 

Other highlights aboard Lars include submarine stowage and garage for its seven-metre tender and a sit-up sundeck Jacuzzi/bar.

The 499GT yacht for sale has a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 11 knots. She has a top speed of 16 knots and a cruising speed is 14 knots. She is MCA compliant, LY3, and en route to the Mediterranean.

Lars is asking €29,900,000.

Press release, December 4th, 2023 - When Stratos’ Dutch Built 50 is introduced this week, it will be as a yacht designed to be the most-seaworthy in its class.

The first hull from pioneering Dutch shipyard, Stratos, the DB50 has been designed to dominate the toughest conditions. Making its maiden voyage directly to the Masters Expo in Amsterdam from the Stratos Shipyard in Lelystad, the Dutch premier will be the first glimpse of the yacht and will be followed by the European premiere at boot Dusseldorf on 20 January.

The DB50 is the culmination of Bas Lengers’ vision, with more than 40 years of nautical expertise, which saw him recognise a gap in the market for a vessel in the 50ft segment, which combined a superyacht standard of finish with class-leading seaworthiness and engineering. “The name Stratos is derived from the stratosphere. This altitude is what we aim to achieve in terms of quality, functionality, and performance. Built to perfection is a term the Stratos team uses daily, as every detail is considered, each aspect is fully developed, and no attention has been spared," says Lengers.

The CEO of international yachting company, Bas Lengers and the driving force behind Stratos, collected the leading minds in the Dutch superyacht field to bring his vision to life. The result is an ode to Dutch excellence, the on-water equivalent of an all-terrain vehicle - an SUV on water - made to go-anywhere and cruise with ease even in the toughest of weather conditions while achieving speeds of 36 knots. “I felt the 50 ft category needed a tough, resiliently-robust vessel, one that is truly seaworthy and built to superyacht standards,” says Bas The DB50 is propelled by the latest twin Volvo Penta IPS systems and incorporates cutting-edge technology on board.

Design and build Combining strength and style, it is built to CE Classification A, the highest rating possible, meaning the DB50 can tackle extended voyages, withstanding winds over Beaufort Force 8 and significant wave heights above four metres. The same applies to the spectacular nautical range of 400 to 450 miles. The DB50 is propelled by the latest twin Volvo Penta IPS systems and incorporates cutting-edge technology on board. “The robust build and CE-A certified construction provides owners a safe and secure vessel,” says project designer, Bernd Weel. This is a yacht with backbone. Key to Bas Lengers’ vision was the resilience and sea-going ability of the vessel. In order to meet this vision, a special grid was designed - unseen in a yacht of this size - and the hull constructed from ultra-dense composite materials, with a hardtop of lightweight carbon.

“The DB50 design philosophy is to be an ‘SUV’ on the water. Created to go anywhere in any weather condition. The vessel is constructed in a way to withstand the most challenging forces, by using a grid which is a framework integrated into the composite hull structure. Among other reinforcements, this makes the vessel particularly strong. The design consists of rigid and strong lines which define the robust and firm character of this vessel” says Weel. A low centre of gravity brings stability and sea kindliness, for a smooth onboard experience. “The bow shape is carefully designed to break away spray water and improve seaworthiness. There are long lines flowing from bow to stern, which emphasise visual length; for example the rub rail and long, stretched glass panels in the hull.”

Collaborative excellence When Bas Lengers set out to create the most-seaworthy vessel in its class, he knew he also wanted it to become the most iconic in its class. Stratos Yacht collected the pre-eminent experts in their respective fields from design, naval architecture and build, and began to redefine the 50ft class of yacht. With the DB50 built to encapsulate Dutch superyacht quality, the team of Stratos’ shipyard, naval architects Sea Level, and designer, Bernd Weel put their minds together to break down expectations for this yachting segment and create a new standard for its class.

The hardtop alone took a year of research and development, resulting in an eye-catching carbon structure that contains an automated sunroof. “It enables guests on board to choose to be in the sun or shade. The two panels can slide forward and aft, in order to provide a superb fusion of sun and shade for both lounge and helm station individually.” Stratos shipyard's in-house team provides highly-skilled carbon and painting services, which delivers a wealth of possibilities to owners while their Stratos is in-build.

Beauty in substance is a theme which continues throughout the DB50. An indestructible stainless steel wet bar delivers a glossy finish which visually ties to the appealing carbon hardtop, while bespoke ergonomic pilot seats with shock absorption both ensure comfortable cruising in the roughest waves and are upholstered in touchable materials, which match the inviting sunpad areas. “The interior design is created with the same robust lines you’ll find on the exterior,” says Weel. The finishing materials have raised the bar for this vessel segment. Carbon composite materials integrated seamlessly into the design are a feature of the exterior with elements like the full-carbon handrail with LED lighting accents, bringing superyacht-level detail to the DB50.

The Stratos Experience The Stratos experience is an elevated affair which continues to rise throughout the design, build and delivery process. “Giving clients an unparalleled customer experience is what I take most pride in. Stratos is undoubtedly the best-in-class and it’s only right that the service matches this level of superior quality: a blissfully care-free experience in all stages of the buying process, as well as beyond purchase,” says Stratos brand manager, Paul Verheij.

That service encompasses all elements needed for onboard bliss. Whether it’s finding the perfect berth, to stepping onboard to a fully-provisioned Stratos ready for the weekend, Stratos uses a personal touch to ensure customer satisfaction. Personalisation of each Stratos is a driving force within Stratos’ DNA. It begins with exterior colour selection in 25 different shades including metallic and non-metallic options, and flowing through to upholstery, teak, and a range of interior choices. Understanding that time on the water is personal, Stratos offers easy individualisation. An online configuration tool allows prospective owners to quickly configure their ideal DB50 via a few clicks; selecting from an array of options that range from waterline colour, to whether they’d like to fit an hydraulic submersible swim platform.

In the design process, owners can choose from three different interior styles which correlate to their preferred ambience onboard; Zen (light), Serene (medium), and Graphite (dark). The design, with its expansive sunpads, dual movement automated sunroof, and inviting alfresco dining space, lends Stratos towards long summer days cruising the Mediterranean. Impressive to guests as a high-performance, luxurious day boat, the full beam cabin with two berths means this is also the ultimate yacht to dominate the sea on longer journeys. Once in port, docking is via seamlessly-integrated stainless steel mooring stations on bow and stern. “They are designed with the SUV in mind, showing winches and bollards instead of hiding them away like many other vessels on the market. We wanted these parts to be functional, strong and in sight.”
