Text description provided by the architects. The yacht club is the symbolic centrepiece of the Monaco's remodelled harbour front. It celebrates the principality's spectacular coastline and its nautical heritage, creating a series of deck-like terraces that step up along the harbour to offer unrivalled views out to races at sea or inland over the course of the renowned Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit. Located on an area of reclaimed land, the development extends the city's existing marina eastwards and can accommodate a range of craft, from sailing boats to 100-metre super yachts.

The club is entered via a glazed atrium that frames views out over the harbour to the palace. On the first floor are a clubroom, bar and restaurant

Above is a double-height function space, and above that an apartment for the club secretary and a series of 'cabins' for visiting guests. The uppermost floors accommodate a range of event spaces. The observation decks are shaded by retractable fabric screens supported by a mast and booms. The harbour elevations are fully glazed and shaded by louvres, and can be opened up to provide uninterrupted views. Photovoltaic cells, solar thermal panels and sea-water cooling systems have all been integrated to ensure the building sets new sustainability standards, in line with Monaco's environmental ambitions.

The scheme also introduces shops and other amenities at quay level to animate the harbour.

The lower floors accommodate a rowing club and sailing school, whose sliding doors encourage activities to spread out on to the quayside. Designed largely for children, the school provides classrooms, workshops and lofts for small boats. Inland, there is a landscaped park on the roof of the sailing school and nautical society. Bounded on one side by the club's restaurant terrace and leading on the other side to a new exhibition hall, it complements the sequence of green spaces in this densely populated city and forms a new link in the pedestrian route between the quayside and Casino Square.

Norman Foster Designed YachtPlus Sets Sail

Luxury yachts charter and ownership.

Nothing compares to owning a private yacht. But the cost of keeping up the ship's maintenance and crew can greatly outweigh the enjoyment owners get from the limited time they spend on the water. That's why YachtPlus, the London-based fractional ownership super-yacht company, has commissioned ten new Signature Series vessels, designed by the renowned architect Lord Norman Foster.

The first yacht in the new fleet of 135-foot luxury vessels is slated for delivery this December. Three of the Signature Series yachts are slated for delivery next year, with three more expected in 2010 and again in 2011.

These striking Signature Series crafts offer 5,737-square-feet of usable living space, with five suites that can sleep up to twelve guests, in addition to chambers for the seven-person crew.

Foster's design focuses largely on the quality of light and views, and offers thirty percent more indoor and outdoor space than other yachts in its class. A team of seven architects from Foster + Partners spent fifteen months perfecting the design. The high-tech Rodriquez Cantieri Navali yard in Sarzana, Italy, was commissioned to build the yachts.

  • jet ski storage
  • submergible beach deck
  • a glass-walled main saloon offering 180 degrees of unrestricted views
  • an owner's cabin with his and her private balconies.

YachtPlus' Luxury Management program offers owners a one-eighth stake in a super-yacht and a guaranteed thirty-four days of use each year, including eleven days in the Mediterranean, eleven in the Caribbean, and two cultural tours in either locale lasting six days each. Lifestyle Management can arrange for transportation, hotel accommodations and excursions for owners, ranging from golfing to vineyard visits.

Fractional owners pay an initial fee of 1,850,000 Euros, or about $2,479,646, and an estimated 200,000 Euros, or $268,069, annually to cover maintenance costs and other fees. Owners have access to any of the ten vessels planned for delivery over the next three years. Owners can opt out of the program at any time, and YachtPlus will re-market the ownership with proceeds, minus associated costs, going to the owner. Each yacht will be sold by the company after eight years to ensure that the fleet is kept up-to-date, and owners will receive full, pro-rated proceeds from the sale of the yacht at open market rate.

The ownership does not allow the yachts to be used as security, which protects owners from creditors in the event of another owner defaulting on a payment or the company declaring bankruptcy.

When signing up for the YachtPlus program, owners each place a down payment and are required to sign up for the program within a month. Once each of a yachts' eight co-owners do so, construction of the yacht begins. The yacht is delivered approximately eighteen months later.

YachtPlus, founded in London in 2005, has commissioned ten Signature Series yachts, and has left the door open to add other vessels, of which owners of any yacht in the fleet would have use.

Norman Foster unveils Ocean Emerald super yacht in Italy

  • Image tools
  • Email image
  • Previous Page

British architect Lord Norman Foster has unveiled the Ocean Emerald, a 41-meter fractional ownership based super-yacht designed by him for YachtPlus.

Ocean Emerald is a stark departure from the traditional motor yacht on the outside design. The grey superstructure begins at a sharp angle in the bow and bends to a peak slightly abaft of midships, the curving line sweeps the rear touching the water.

The 41 meter yacht features extra deck space with 2495 square feet being devoted to outside deck space and a further 2790 square feet available for guest and crew accommodation.

The master suite designed to offer forward facing views features two bathrooms set apart from each other. Light wood effects used in deckheads, faux leather and marble veneer add luxury to the interior. Lower deck contains four similarly decorated cabins with the capacity to accommodate ten guests.

The large main salon features huge windows allowing ample brightness. The centrally located spiral staircase passes through all three decks allowing light to flood the lower deck from the skylight above. The steps of the staircase are internally illuminated during night.

The superyacht was unveiled on April 25, 2009 at Porto Lotti Marina near La Spezia in Italy.

LONDON, England -- "Ocean Emerald" is a superyacht with added wow-factor. Her startling appearance has made sure of that and in real life she is every bit as dramatic as she appears in these photographs.

"Ocean Emerald" is the second time Lord Foster has designed a superyacht.

We were among the guests invited to the superyacht's official launching in La Spezia, in northern Italy, when her celebrity designer and his team walked down the red carpet to cast his eyes upon his latest masterpiece.

Lord Foster of Thameside is no stranger to eye-catching and dramatic design. His architectural firm Norman Foster + Partners is responsible for iconic London landmarks such as 30 St Mary Axe, better known as the Gherkin, and the Millennium Bridge. Foster is the master of the curved line. Imagine for a moment a photograph of the Gherkin split in two lengthwise and laid flat, recall the sweeping curves of the Millennium Bridge and you will see how he has managed to combine the drama of those two creations into what is arguably the most visually stunning superyacht of the year.

Ocean Emerald is not the first of Foster's forays into the world of superyacht design. It was he who drew the lines for the Lürssen-built Izanami, a 58-metre yacht now called Ronin and owned by Larry Ellison. Launched in 1993, she is also a head-turner. Design and external appearance aside, Ocean Emerald is different from every other 41-metre superyacht in that she is not to be the sole property of any one owner.

This perhaps is one of the reasons for her radical look as she is designed to appeal to those who are new to the concept of superyacht ownership. Unlike the traditional form of ownership, where one person, sometimes through an anonymous corporation, is the owner of all 64 shares of the yacht, the shares in Ocean Emerald are split either into eight or sixteen parts. These fractions -- one-eighth or one-sixteenth -- of Ocean Emerald have been sold to different individuals by the London-based company YachtPlus.

When engaged to design the yacht, the Foster team were initially told to work within the confines of an existing hull designed by yacht builders Intermarine, part of Rodriquez Cantieri Navale. But after discussions, Rodriquez has produced a new 41-metre hull three metres longer than the original concept.

Walking around Ocean Emerald, it is clear that Foster has taken all the traditional rules of yacht design, torn them up and started again. The public rooms benefit from abundant natural light, which floods in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, in addition to the copious artificial lights. Coupled with the use of pale-coloured woods, soft furnishings and white high-gloss, wipe-clean surfaces they create a wonderfully bright, modern feel.

Unusually for a motor yacht, the natural teak decking extends right the way through from the aft deck to the saloon, ensuring a seamless visual transition between the outside and inside spaces.

To join the Ownership Lifestyle Programme will cost an initial payment of €1.875 million. This buys you a one eighth share of the yacht and guarantees 30 nights per year on board -- ten nights peak season in the Mediterranean, ten nights peak season in the Caribbean, and two five-night cultural tours such as sightseeing, shopping, golf, Formula 1, vineyard visits and museums. Each year there will be an annual service charge of €200,000 to cover overheads, including marine and hotel operations, permanent crew, mooring and berthing fees, year-round maintenance and mechanical upkeep, marine and port charges and cruise itineraries management.

Lord Foster said: "With my team we have given a new emphasis to such issues as quality and quantity of space, outdoor terraces, light and views. Our commission is for the total design concept of the fleet, with an eye on beauty, function and luxury, down to the smallest detail. We believe that there is great potential in the concept of luxury cruisers to think afresh such issues as views, light, privacy and the quality of spaces -- both inside and outdoors."

Norman Foster Builds the Ultimate Yacht Club in Monaco

The famed English architect’s new Port Hercules masterpiece is the best place on Earth for sailors to watch F1.

Port Hercules , the deep water harbor considered by many to be the world capital of yachting, finally has the White House it deserves. Norman Foster’s new Yacht Club de Monaco , officially opened by Sovereign Prince Albert II, now presides over the schooner and motor yacht-packed docks. Like Foster’s previous works – Wembley Stadium is the most similar – the building, inspired by pilot houses, is deceptively simple and striking. But the rounded, layered exterior gives way to club rooms, “cabins” for guests, a pool fit for royalty (and royalty’s dates), and the F1 Paddock Club, which looks out over the Monaco Grand Prix pit lanes. Foster’s eye-catching addition actually improves Monte Carlo’s already striking shoreline. That’s no easy trick. The new club looks out over the super yachts that dot Port Hercules. At first glance, the building actually looks like one of them.  The bottom floors of club contain rowing and sailing schools. The docks aren’t just for sunbathing; captains and crew teams keep busy. The terraced decks offer harbor and Grand Prix track views.  The main staircase showcases Norman Foster’s trademark curves. The club’s interiors are plush and quiet – except the F1 lounge, which is plush and loud.

With Floating Life on Norman Foster’s yacht

With Floating Life on Norman Foster’s yacht

Désirée sormani.

One of the most revolutionary sailing projects, which has also opened up the world of yachting to residential architects. We are talking about the 41-metre Ocean Pearl designed by the famous London architecture firm Foster+Partners launched in 2010 with the intention not only to overturn a traditional vision of yacht design with its forms but also to bring a new concept of yacht timeshare to the nautical world.

Ocean Pearl is in fact part of the YachtPlus fleet together with her two sisters Ocean Sapphire and Ocean  Emerald .

The fleet is included in the special timeshare program developed and managed by Floating Life which has always organized and supervised it maintenance, operation and even the change of 'scene' with the owner's personal belongings as he enters.

The Swiss boutique-company, founded by Andrea Pezzini and Barbara Tambani in 2002, has extensive experience in the management of all-round yachting services: technical, administrative, chartering , and also extends to the field of yacht design.

1 Ocean Pearl

Ocean Pearl , launched in 2010, owned by 8 share holders , was a forerunner of today's very current trends, and just recently it underwent an accurate work of refitting (a renovation) on a technical and aesthetic level, using design solutions and very practical materials to guarantee a perfect and fast transformation (in terms of décor) of the yacht (36-48 hours) between an owner and the other.

With a clean and essential design, it has ultra-modern and bright interiors thanks to huge full-height windows and nivee wood walls and glossy finishes.

Particular is the full-beam owner's suite with two private terraces.

The main technical works concerned the complete repainting of the hull and superstructure in pastel gray with the replacement of part of the aluminum to maintain the thickness, the reconstruction of the teak deck and the overhaul of the engines and generator sets.

5 Main Saloon Old

In the interiors, on the other hand, the works mainly concentrated on the requests of the eight owners and their families of different nationalities and therefore with different habits and lifestyles; but no changes to the general layout were necessary.

The Floating Life team, which also followed the work at the planning level, was able to grasp the wishes of each family and get everyone to agree.

Interventions were therefore made in the main salon, making it even more welcoming, with custom-made furniture in the name of the best Made in Italy made by expert craftsmen from Cantù and Forlì ; and on the furnishings of the living area on the upper deck, which has been updated and rationalised.

A small revolution instead on the sundeck which, instead of the old layout, now sees the introduction of a wonderful central Jacuzzi surrounded by a sunbathing area, bar and audio system.

To the delight of the eight owners who will enjoy it for eight years!

Norman Foster 40 Signature Series Yacht

spec-img2-48064

The impressive four-tiered design stems from Norman Foster's consideration of "such issues as quality and quantity of space, outdoor terraces, light and views" and allows for both the staff acomodations as well as room for 10 guests. Features like forward-looking views from all four decks, two balconies in the master suite and spacious rooms and saloons that take into account the needs of children and families offer far more appeal than the more sleek-looking counterparts out there.

spec-img2.jpg

Not that the overall profile of the 132-foot yacht is anything to complain about. The grand staircase uniting the four levels offers a stunning design element, as do the floor-to-ceiling windows which lend an unusual appearance for a boat. See more images of exteriors and interiors, as well as design illustrations, after the jump .

Crystal Island by Foster + Partners

norman foster yacht

Crystal Island appears to be some ethereal giant from any dystopian science fiction at first glance. However, iconic architecture firm Foster+Partners has dreamed of turning this vision into reality in the land of Moscow. The massive tent-like structure is going to be the biggest building in the world roughly having the four times square footage of the Pentagon. The narrative hook of this massive mixed-use structure might be the notion that- it is going to be “the world’s first archaeology”, where “ archaeology ” acts as the fusion of ecology and architecture.

Crystal Island by Foster + Partners - Sheet1

Crystal Island- one step towards the futuristic Moscow

This mega structure will be located on Nagatino Peninsula, edged by the Moscow River. This location is only 7.5 km from the Kremlin and offers panoramic views over Moscow. In the words of the architect Norman Foster – “Crystal Island is one of the world’s most ambitious building projects and it represents a milestone in the 40-year history of the practice. It is the largest single building in the world, creating a year-round destination for Moscow and a sustainable, dynamic new urban quarter. It is a paradigm of compact, mixed-use, sustainable city planning , with an innovative energy strategy and ‘smart’ skin which buffers against climate extremes.”

Being the world’s most perplexing project, Crystal Island has been granted preliminary planning permission in Moscow. The project is of an unprecedented scale and is contained within a massive mega-structure with a total floor area of 2.5 million square meters. The proposal is one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers and has the greatest volume at 450 meters. The Moscow skyline also produces a magnificent new emblem. Moreover, the tower will have lighting at night to serve as a beacon that can be seen from the surrounding river and farther inland.

Giant “Christmas Tree” houses a wide range of activities

The spiralling shape of this “Christmas Tree” structure rises dramatically from a recently planted park, rising in opposite directions to create a diagonal grid. The project’s unusual geometry continues into the park. As a consequence, the plan is smoothly incorporated into a brand-new park’s landscape , which offers a variety of year-round sports, such as cross-country skiing and ice skating in the winter. In addition, to maintain a vibrant and active public realm throughout the day, Crystal Island will contain a variety of cultural, exhibition, and performance facilities, as well as offices, stores, and about 3000 hotel rooms and 900 serviced apartments.

A highly populated suburb with every resource within easy walking distance, including an international school with 500 pupils, allows residents to work and live there. Individual components of mixed-use buildings utilize energy at various times, supporting the area’s diversity of economic and social activity while also making a compelling case for energy balance. Moreover, the Crystal Tower has panoramic views over the city of Moscow from a viewing platform 300m (980 ft) above the ground, and another platform at 150m (480 ft).

Sustainable features- “Smart Skin” and many more | Crystal Island

The superstructure provides a ‘second skin’ that acts as a breathable covering for the inner layers. This feature is termed “smart skin” to buffer against extreme temperatures. The internal domain will have dynamic enclosure panels inserted into the structural framing to allow daylight to enter deep inside the structure. Moreover, these panels will be adaptable to modify the interior temperature- shut in winter for extra warmth and opened in summer to permit natural ventilation.

To protect the privacy of each unit, a vertical louvre system covers the internal facades. The exterior facade will be solar sensitive and will include solar panels , along with wind turbines to produce energy for the mega-structure. However, Within the triangulated steel mega frame, the interior constructed volumes adopt a staggered shape, extending flush against the exterior’s slope faceted glazed surface. Several winter gardens are created by this terracing. Curling arrows in section drawings show air convection currents and exchanges through the tent’s chimney and through an ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) membrane that will wrap the structure and provide superior light transmission than glass.

Despite significant opposition during planning sessions, the design was approved. Aleksei Klimenko, a leading member of Moscow’s expert council on architecture, said it would overshadow a Unesco-protected church in the nearby Kolomenskoye district. He told Radio Svoboda that the structure was excessively oriental and resembled a “dahlia stuck in a string bag”. He added there were also issues with the concentration of heavy metals at the site, which were leached from surrounding manufacturers. Moreover, an architect who opposed the project, Yuri Bocharov, said: ” It appears that aliens from other planets have touched down in a flying saucer.” He continued that the structure contradicted the character of the city.

On the other hand, the Crystal Island construction received accolades from several city planners, and Moscow’s mayor, Yuri Luzhkov, noted how the creative design stood out from the “cubes and squares” of other international architects. Alexander Kudryavtsev, president of the Moscow Architectural Institute, said, “At first I understood I’d been shown some type of Christmas tree.” “But then I reasoned that such a magnificent building is a fitting illustration of modern technology and all of our accomplishments. The skyscraper might come to represent Moscow in the twenty-first century.”

Final Words | Crystal Island

The paradoxical “Crystal Island” is yet to be built and many people are indeed precarious about turning this vague project into reality. Nevertheless, the extraordinary imagination of Norman Foster has sprouted the seed of designing the dream in many minds. Fosters+Partners has pinned their hopes on the technological advancement of modern times. Who knows, we might see “Crystal Island” growing in the domain of Moscow soon.
