Very sorry I didn't stay in Martinique long enough to meet you... An absolute great read!! Well done!! Brilliant post and wonderful photos, glad you had such an enriching and interesting experience! And I'm pleased to see that navigating wasn't too much of a pain for you! Really enjoyed reading this! Thanks for posting and for the great resources! Hi I am planning a very similar voyage to you in my colvic 26 'Blue Mover'. One of my main concerns is that we will be unable to stop in French or Spanish ports since we are struggling to find anyone who will insure us in such a small boat. How did you overcome this? Hi, sorry for the delay! We were insured through Pantaenius, who covered us up to and including Madeira and the Canaries. They have a reputation for being flexible with smaller or more unusual boats/small crews (others turned their noses up) and are highly recommended. I think it was about £400 total for the extended area cover. We weren't insured for the transatlantic - we planned to reinsure in the Caribbean, although I can't remember now if we actually did this..! I don't recall anyone actually checking our insurance documents, although some marinas do. Good luck! Yorkshire guy living in the woods of Florida, close to the Suwannee river & feeling the urge to get a sail boat, loved reading your post, well done the two of you. Cheers Frank Thank you! I will finish this blog one day and plan to add some technical info too.. Reward up to $75,000 2 years after Apex man murdered at NC coastA PEX, N.C. (WNCN) — Two years after an Apex husband was murdered on the North Carolina coast, the reward for his killers has been increased by $20,000 and police have a definitive car make and model in the crime. Randy Joseph Miller was killed just outside his Atlantic Beach home early the morning of August 29, 2022. Miller, 65, was at a home on West Atlantic Avenue for a fishing trip. Miller was in the driveway loading up a fishing boat around 5:45 a.m. Monday. He was fatally stabbed in the crime that has stumped investigators. On Friday, Atlantic Beach police issued a news release on the “sad occasion” just after the second anniversary of the murder of Randy Miller. In the past, police said they thought an Infiniti sedan was possibly involved. But now they say the suspects were likely in a silver 2013-2017 Volkswagen CC, which is similar to a Passat but has a lower roofline. Police have also said that car break-in suspects were very possibly involved. A photo released by Atlantic Beach police showed a suspect caught on video trying to break into a Jeep under a beach house the same morning as the killing. “Three individuals were observed breaking into vehicles shortly before the murder,” Atlantic Beach police said. The information from police on Friday also said the reward in the case was up to $75,000. The reward started at $30,000 but increased last year to $55,000. Officials said anyone with information should contact the Atlantic Beach Police Department or the State Bureau of Investigation at 919-300-6860 with anonymous tips. People with information can also call Crime Stoppers at (252)-726-4636 to remain anonymous. For the latest news, weather, sports, and streaming video, head to CBS17.com. - JRA & Members' Projects

North Atlantic 29 Sailboat For Sale (Administrator) | $3500 or BO 1 file | | I have not heard of anyone called Campbell, but I know that the Hawaiian sailor, Brian Caldwell, who briefly held the record for the youngest solo circumnavigator in 1996 (with stops), on his Contessa 26, , later announced he was commencing a non-stop solo circumnavigation on a NA29 but did not get underway. Almost certainly the same boat because there were only a few of this production model built. Perhaps this is who you were remembering, Jim? About 10 years ago, Brian sailed a Vega 27 across the Pacific to Australia, between yacht deliveries, in company with then being owned by a friend of his. Sadly, both boats were badly damaged in a cyclone the following summer in Queensland, and their voyages were abandoned. | | I have not heard of anyone called Campbell, but I know that the Hawaiian sailor, Brian Caldwell, who briefly held the record for the youngest solo circumnavigator in 1996 (with stops), on his Contessa 26, , later announced he was commencing a non-stop solo circumnavigation on a NA29 but did not get underway. We reported earlier on Voldymyr Zelenskyy's comments that Ukraine plans to indefinitely hold territory it has seized in its Kursk invasion (see 18.17 post). Asked about the surprise invasion in an interview with our US partner network NBC News , Mr Zelenskyy said the operation was aimed at restoring Ukraine's "territorial integrity". He also said Kyiv did not "need" Russian land - but he remained silent on what the next steps would be. Watch a clip from the interview here... People are still trapped under the rubble of a building destroyed by a Russian attack in Poltava, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said. Rescue efforts are ongoing and rubble is still being cleared, he said in his nightly address. The Ukrainian president confirmed at least 51 people have died and 271 are injured as a result of one of the deadliest attacks of the war so far. "I am grateful to all the rescuers, doctors, medical nurses and all the Poltava residents who have joined in to help, donated blood, and who provide support," he said. "We know that there are people under the rubble of the destroyed building. Everything is being done to save as many lives as possible." Volodymyr Zelenskyy has posted a video of his meeting with the UN's nuclear chief Rafael Mariano Grossi in Kyiv today. Mr Grossi, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, met the Ukrainian president ahead of his visit to the Zaporizhzhia power plant, where he said the situation was "very fragile". "The station is again on the verge of being on a blackout. We've had eight of those in the past. A blackout [means] no power; no power, no cooling. No cooling, then maybe you have a disaster," he told reporters before the meeting. Mr Zelenskyy said his talks with Mr Grossi were focused "on the issue of strengthening nuclear safety in Ukraine, ensuring constant monitoring not only of the state of NPPs (nuclear power plants), but also of substations that are critical for their operation". Russia has launched a new military-focused school course as it looks to prepare teenagers "mentally and physically" for service, the UK Ministry of Defence has said. In its latest intelligence update, the ministry said the course for 15 to 18-year-olds is part of a new programme called "Foundations of Security and Defence of the Motherland". Over 11 modules, students will cover a range of topics including "combined arms combat and small arms familiarisation", it said. "The programme seeks to create and will likely result in a more militarised and security focused society," the MoD said. It added that the new youth strategy in Russia was aimed primarily at preparing "pre-conscription age teenagers mentally and physically for military service". Russia has also increased the number of summer camps for children which involve various military activities, according to the MoD. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed the deputy head of the Ukrainian president's office, Rostyslav Shurma, according to a decree on the presidential website. Ukrainian media outlets had been reporting that the dismissal of Mr Shurma, who took up the role in November 2021, was being considered by parliament. The decree does not explain why he was sacked. Meanwhile, Olha Stefanishyna, Ukraine's deputy prime minister responsible for European integration, has resigned, according to Ukraine's parliamentary speaker. Her resignation comes after Ukraine's strategic industries, justice and environment ministers also tendered their resignation earlier today (see 15.37 post). The major shakeup of Ukraine's government comes at a critical time during the war with Russia, and ahead of Mr Zelenskyy's visited to the US this month where he hopes to present a "victory plan" to Joe Biden. The Ukrainian president said changes were being undertaken to ensure Ukraine had the strengthened government it needed. "Autumn will be extremely important. Our state institutions must be structured in such a way so that Ukraine can achieve all the results it needs," he said. "For this, we must strengthen some areas of the government and changes in its makeup have been prepared. There will also be changes in the (president's) office." A volunteer has recalled how he knew "something evil" had happened as he heard the explosions caused by Russia's missile strike on Poltava today. Yevheniy Zemskyy, who headed to the area of the attack to offer help, said: "I heard explosions... I was at home at that time. When I left the house, I realized that it was something evil and something bad, I was scared." Mr Zemskyy said he was worried about the children and other residents of the city. "That's why we are here today to help our city in any way we can," he said. According to the prosecutor general's office of Ukraine, at least 51 people were killed in the ballistic missile strike by Russian forces earlier this afternoon. More than 200 people have been injured. Regional head Philip Pronin called the attack "a great tragedy" and announced three days of mourning starting tomorrow. Ukraine plans to indefinitely hold Russian territory captured in its surprise invasion of the border region of Kursk last month, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told our US partner network NBC News . The Ukrainian president said in an exclusive interview that holding the territory was integral to his "victory plan" to force Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table and bring an end to the war He said he would present the proposal to international partners, including the US. Appearing to confirm Ukrainian troops would eventually withdraw, Mr Zelenskyy said Ukraine didn't "need their land". "We don't want to bring our Ukrainian way of life there," he said. The president declined to say whether Ukraine planned to try and take more Russian territory. "With all respect, I can't speak about it, I think the success is very close to surprise," he said. Ukrainian forces crossed the border into Kursk on 6 August in a shock attack which saw them seize a series of villages and take hundreds of prisoners. Moscow vowed to retaliate. Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he has urged Canadian Prime Minister to "strengthen advocacy" for Ukraine's allies to allow it to strike deep inside Russia. The Ukrainian president said he spoke with Mr Trudeau over the phone today, with the two leaders also discussing the ongoing rescue operation in Poltova. Kyiv has long been calling for the ability to conduct long-range strikes against military targets in Russia. Mr Zelenskyy said yesterday that Western partners should not only allow the attacks - but also supply the weapons for such strikes to happen. US officials said Washington was close to a deal to hand Kyiv long-range cruise missiles that could reach deep into Russia - but it would face several months' wait for them as it works through technical issues. The inclusion of Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSM) in a weapons package is expected to be announced this autumn, three sources said. Mongolia's government has given an explanation as to why Vladimir Putin was not arrested when he landed in the country for an official visit. The Russian president arrived in Mongolia yesterday on his first visit to a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC) since it issued a warrant for his arrest nearly 18 months ago on charges of war crimes. ICC members are expected to detain suspects if an arrest warrant has been issued - but there's no sign that Mongolia will heed the demand. Now, the Mongolian government has said in a statement to Politico that it was difficult to arrest the Russian president due to its position of energy dependence on Moscow. "Mongolia imports 95% of its petroleum products and over 20% of electricity from our immediate neighborhood, which have previously suffered interruption for technical reasons. This supply is critical to ensure our existence and that of our people," a spokesperson said. They added that Mongolia has "always maintained a policy of neutrality in all its diplomatic relations". Ukrainian service personnel were killed when Russian forces struck a military institute in Poltova, according to officials. Ukraine's ground forces said on Telegram that they were probing whether enough had been done to protect the personnel at the educational facility which was struck by a ballistic missile today. They did not say how many people at the facility had died. Safety measures will be strengthened at other military facilities, they said. The Northern 29 carries a generous sail plan for its time, and is quite stiff, having a ballast displacement ratio of 46 per cent. The major sailmaker for Northern Yachts was Joe Fernandes, owner of Triton sails and a previous Northern 29 owner. Joe is of the opinion that the boat is a bit slow to be really competitive with the half-ton class ...
