Yacht Charter Greece – The Aegean Yachting offers a wide range of sailing yachts, motor yachts, and catamarans in some of the most beautiful destinations in Greece .  A brand of Nikolas Yachting Ltd. , Aegean Yachting provides affordable yacht charters in Greece and the Greek islands . You can explore the Greek islands with a sailing or motor yacht, bare-boat or with a skipper for the vacation of a lifetime. The Greek peninsula is at the far south east of Europe is made up of the mainland (Attica, Peloponnese, Central Greece, Thessaly, Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace) and the islands in the Aegean and Ionian Seas. The area has a population of about 10 million.

Athens , the capital and largest city of Greece: The name of Greece’s capital derives from the name of the Goddess of wisdom and intelligence, Athena. This unique city is where democracy first saw the light of day, and where the Parthenon, the gem of architecture, was built.

Yacht charter bases in Greece – Greek islands:

Greece has an extremely large number of islands – 6,000-odd islands and islets scattered in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, of which only 227 islands are inhabited. Most of the islands are found in the Aegean Sea and are divided into many groups:

Sporades Islands: Pine-clad, picturesque, and hilly islands with some of Greece’s most beautiful beaches — Alonnisos , Skiathos , Skopelos , and Skyros .

Dodecanese Islands  ( Yacht Charter in Dodecanese, Greece ) – This group of islands has some of the most cosmopolitan and tranquil of the Greek Islands – 15 larger and about 150 smaller Greek islands — Astypalaia , Agathonisi , Alimia, Arkoi, Chalki, Farmakonisi, Gyali, Kalymnos , Karpathos , Kasos , Kastellorizo , Kinaros, Kos , Lipsi , Leipsoi, Leros , Levitha, Marathos, Nisyros , Nimos , Patmos , Pserimos , Rhodes , Symi , Saria, Strongyli, Syrna, Telendos , and Tilos .

Cyclades Islands  (Yacht Charter in Cyclades, Greece), situated in the heart of Aegean Sea, Cyclades is one of the most popular yacht charter destination in Greece.

This group of islands is made up of 56 islands of various sizes, with the most important being Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Serifos, Sikinos, Sifnos, Syros, Tinos, Folegandros, as well as the “Minor Cyclades” comprising Donousa, Irakleia, Koufonisia and Schinousa.

Saronic Islands  also known as  Gulf of Aegina   (Yacht Charter in Saronic Gulf, Greece), easily accessible from Athens or Poros, excellent for bareboat yacht charters or flotillas alike.

This area is also ideal for beginners with steady predictable afternoon breezes – the islands of Aegina/Aegena, Salamina/Salamis, Poros, Patroklos, Fleves, Angistri,  Methana, Spetses, and Hydra.

Ionian Islands  ( Yacht Charter in Ionian, Greece )  – The Ionian Sea is an ideal yacht charter destination and somewhat more peaceful than the Aegean.

The lush green beauty of the Ionian Islands offer gentle sailing from bases in Corfu and Lefkas makes this a family friendly yacht charter area in Greece – lying just off the West coast of Greece, Ionian islands resemble a necklace, and include Paxos and Antipaxos, Corfu, Levkas, Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakinthos.

Evia  (Yacht Charter in Evia, Greece) – The prefecture of Evia (which also includes the island of Skiros), is next to the prefecture of Viotia on the east and on the south touches the Aegean Sea, on the north and northwest to the Pagasitiko and Maliako Gulf, while on the west and southwest with the north and south Evian Gulf.

The Northeastern Aegean Islands  (Yacht Charter in Northeastern Aegean, Greece)  – Agios Efstratios, Thasos, Ikaria, Lesbos, Limnos, Inouses, Samos, Samothrace, Chios, Psara.

Crete    – an authentic Greek Island with a metropolitan twist: Yacht charter in Crete is a wonderful experience, offering the ultimate escape. Located at the southernmost tip of Greece, Crete is the largest island of Greece and divided in to 4 prefectures.

From west to east: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi.

Sail in the Aegean! Sailing holiday in the Aegean Sea:

The Greek area of the Aegean Sea has several famous sailing routes:

  • Cruise around the Cyclades archipelago
  • Sailing the Dodecanese archipelago
  • Cruise around the Sporades archipelago
  • Sailing around the Saronic archipelago

Sailing in the Aegean Sea

There are wonderful islands around Athens, which offer not only sandy and rocky beaches but also impressive historical monuments. On these islands, you can find everything you can imagine, secluded places that can only be approached by yachts, local attractions, more and more beautiful shores. We offer you a one-week itinerary for cruising around the Cyclades, a sailing filled with experiences and adventures. Before departure Athens the attractions of the city, in addition to the Acropolis, you should visit the church built-in honor of the Athene Niké, the Parthenon, the Zeus Temple Olümpic and the Dionysus Theater. It is interesting and memorable to watch the change of the guards on Syntagma Square. It is worth to experience the cuisine of the city in traditional taverns and restaurants. About the beaches, we can generally say that the farther we go from the centre, the better we find. We can start our adventures from Lavrion.

Day 1. Lavrion – Koundouros (Kea Island)

25.58 km (15.90 nm) Our journey leaves from our base port in Athens. Here you can relax after the busy Athens sightseeing tour. Kea is a beautiful island with beautiful cities. Old temples, beaches, mills, towers, and windmills can be found here. There are many great restaurants in Kea, where fresh fish, lobster, and other traditional dishes are served. If you are looking for a quiet berth, we recommend a bay that is 100 metres away from the harbour. It is worth spending the night in Agios Nikolaos Bay in Vourkari. The village is protected from the winds of the area. It is a favourite place for ancient crabs, so it is a protected area.

Day 2. Kea Island – Kythnos Island

25.84 km (16.06 nm) On the island, you can visit Merichas a small coastal village, which has a very sparkling life in the main season. Fresh fishes and fine wines are served in the taverns. Kythnos is a good place to explore the islands of the Cyclades. An important anchor point for most routes. Apart from the islands described in our route, the islands of Paros, Naxos and Lavrion are also close. On the island, you can harbour at Merichas where you can also spend the night. It’s a good idea to plan ahead so there would be a free space for you in the small port area. On the way to the harbour, you can discover one of Greece’s largest caves – the Katafiki Cave in Dryopida.

Day 3. Kythnos – Syros Island

73.73 km (45.81 nm) On the third day of our trip, we depart from Kythnos to Syros Island. The island is a regular station in sailing routes. Syros is a charming little island that is full of spectacular, colourful historic buildings. On the southwest coast of the island, you can find Finikas where it is worth to stay for a night. It is a quiet village full of taverns, bars, cafés and offers good protection from the Meltemi wind. Information about what to do in Syros, Syros sailing or yacht charter in Syros

Day 4. Syros – Mykonos Island

Coasts and bays in Aegean Sea

Day 5. Mykonos – Paros

45.82 km (28.47 nm) The bay of Parikia is very well protected against both Meltemi and Sirocco; its disadvantage is its difficult accessibility. Even as an experienced sailor, it is not easy to moor here: in the west, some cliffs make it difficult to set in. The island itself is famous for its beautiful snow-white marble architecture. You should see the Frankish castle built-in 1260, which has now become part of the city of Parikia. If you are curious about the origins of the abundance of marbles, be sure to check out the marble quarries that have been in operation for thousands of years.

As a sailor, the Skorpios Museum in Aliki is a must-see, where you can visit Benetos Skiadas ’wonderful collection of ship models. Be sure to check out the Valley of Butterflies, where you can see plenty of butterflies worthy of its name in a beautiful natural environment. Read more about what to do in Paros, Paros sailing, or Paros yacht charter

Day 6. Paros – Sifnos

53, 94 km (33, 52 nm) Then, sail to the island of Sifnos. Here you can admire beautiful olive trees and almond fields. The symbol of the island is the Church of the Seven Martyrs, seen on a tiny peninsula-like extension of the east coast. Its beautiful whitewashed walls, sky-blue dome, and Cycladic architectural style are worth a look. In addition to the iconic church, the island hides many monasteries and museums. The most significant of these is the monastery of Chrissopighi.

Day 7. Sifnos – Souinin Lavrion

103.47 km (64.29 nm) Sounion is at the most southern point of Greece. Previously served as a defense line against attacks targeting the city of Athens. The uniquely beautiful Poseidon church is on top of the cliffs. From where you can enjoy a wonderful view of a sunset. It is known for its historic buildings and spirituality, while it is a great place for relaxation and recreation.

We are returning to Athens, there are still plenty of attractions to see. We recommend three of them. Lycabettus Mountain is the highest point in Athens, accessible by foot or by car, or even with a glider. From here a breathtaking landscape opens up to the entire Attica Basin and the Aegean Sea. The ornate National Garden is right behind the Parliament. Here you can spend a pleasant afternoon on the shady promenades. Between the garden’s huge palm, orange and lemon trees you can admire sculptures. One of the largest buildings in ancient Athens is Panathenaic, which was built around 330 B.C., games were held here in honour of the goddess Athene. The stadium was completely rebuilt for the 1896 Olympics, so it was the first modern Olympic Stadium. More Cyclades sailing routes or yacht charter in Cyclades.

Seasickness

Seasickness on Charter Seasickness can ruin one or several days of anyone's charter cruise and virtually anyone can be subject to it. In fact, 90% of the people have experienced motion sickness at one point in their lives. Only veterans offshore sailors can consider themselves impervious to sea sickness, although it can happen to them too. Anyway, it is not our purpose here to get into the causes of sea sickness. Suffice it so say that it occurs when the brain receives inconsistent signals from the eyes and the inner ear for an extended period of time. Our goal here is to give some tips to deal with it when, or even better, before it happens. Preventing Sea Sickness Drugs, patches, etc. Unfortunately, as of today, no drug can completely prevent or cure sea sickness in most people. Further, not everyone reacts the same way to any given drug. Therefore, one's got to try several until the right one is identified. Usually, those drugs cause some drowsiness at different levels depending on the drug. Ear patches are also interesting because the chemical is released through the skin over several days, which minimizes the side effects. However, what those drugs do is simply raise the threshold for sickness. It is proven that they are much more efficient when taken before experiencing any sea sickness, but they are not that effective in reversing it once started. So, if you know you're prone to sea sickness, it is recommended you take the drug when still ashore before casting off, or in the morning, before leaving the anchorage. After casting off, seasickness prone people should absolutely not stay down below at all (where seasickness can happen in minutes), but out on deck, in fresh air. If for whatever reason, the person must stay down below, he/she should lay down on a bed, as close as possible to the center of the boat where the motion is quieter, and certainly not in the front where the motion is the most brutal. It will not prevent the seasickness from happening at all, but the person will be much less vulnerable to it. Eating and Drinking It is a well known fact that alcohol consumption is a direct trigger for seasickness. Any potential subject should avoid drinking before sailing or at least drink moderately, as far back as the night before. A hang over in the morning is a guarantee for sickness. The same goes for eating. Avoid heavy food before sailing: a strong breakfast with sausages, eggs and bacon sprinkled with coffee and milk is a pretty good recipe for giving the whole thing back to the fish! So eat moderately and even avoid drinking too much liquid altogether. Stay with solid food, like bread, fruits, etc. Dealing with Seasickness Learn to identify the symptoms as early as possible Usually the first signs are slight drowsiness and some lethargy. But for most people, the first very obvious signs come from the stomach (nauseous feeling, which the subject tends to try controlling), and from the skin (slight cold sweat). Then symptoms increase, and the face becomes paler (or even greener!). Any attempt to concentrate on a task (mental or else) will augment the sickness. The nauseous feeling eventually becomes incontrollable, and ends up in vomiting, sometimes violently. Respond to the symptoms Immediately upon noticing the first signs, you must do something about it. Absorb a drug, if not already done. If the person is down below, he/she should immediately come up on deck, in contact of fresh air. Once a deck, set your eye sight on the horizon and the distant waves. Avoid reading, looking at a chart, a compass etc. This increases the sickness. More generally, any task that requires focusing on some work is a potential sea sickness trigger. Keep your body cool Do not stay in the sun: get in the shade and remove unnecessary layers of clothes. Anticipate the boat motion While looking outside, try to anticipate the motions by looking at the coming waves and adjusting the body position. Try to do this until you find a rhythm to it. Talk to the skipper He could either change the point of sail for a while or, even better, heave to in order to calm the boat's motion until you feel better. In any case, if you cannot keep the treshold of nausea under control, be prepared to handle some vomiting. Stay on the leeward side of the boat, if you have to vomit over board. And have someone prepare a bucket. Or use one of the sick-bags found in commercial aircrafts. If Someone Becomes Really Sick Vomiting will bring temporary relief to nausea. If it happens once, then fine. If the person vomits repeatedly, then he/she eventually will become dehydrated and weak. He/she should absorb a little bit of liquid and crackers or small pieces of bread, for example. Rest and lying down is also necessary as long as it lasts, with good ventilation and coolness. In conclusion, the most important thing to remember from all this is: prevention. Because once one is really sick, it is very difficult to reverse the process.
