Weems & plath 700 yacht lamp.

  • Description
  • Ordering Info

The flame is windproof and completely encased by an extra-thick glass chimney with gaskets top and bottom, plus an internal mesh screen and 5 brass rods for exterior shock protection.

(not stamped) which is then machined and polished prior to assembly. The result is an extremely durable lamp (3 lbs dry weight) which is unaffected by the saltwater environment, and fully capable to withstand the bumps, shocks and constant movement of everyday life at sea."

OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES:

Available in several finishes, Model #700 is the original, all-brass version. Model #700SS has a stainless steel bonnet and heat shield, and #700BK combines an elegant black powdercoat finish. Each lamp proudly carries its own individual Serial Number, which is stamped to the brass nameplate on the front bonnet.

With versatile placement options, the 700 can stand independently on a table or countertop, or it can be suspended from its hook, remaining portable for use at the chart table, in the cockpit, or wherever else it's needed.

A gimbal bracket option  (solid brass) is available for mounting to a wall or bulkhead, thus enabling the lamp to pivot freely and remain upright regardless of the sea-state or movement of the ship.  There's also a wall hanger (solid brass) available for placement inside the home, or on the porch or patio. The lamp is easily removed from either mount, and so having both types allows the lamp to be placed interchangeably between home and the boat.

Weems & Plath Brass Yacht Lamp

The Brass Yacht Lamp is solid brass and is styled after a traditional miner’s lamp. The design includes venting holes at the top of the bonnet and a mesh screen inside that disperses gas from the flame, avoiding the risk of gas build up, a feature crucial to early miners who were at risk of experiencing explosions in airless underground tunnels. This feature makes it perfect for use on boats or on the porches of coastal retreats. The glass enclosed flame cannot be extinguished by even hurricane-force winds as long as the fuel source remains. This safe and reliable lamp is individually-numbered and can stand independently on a table or mounted to a wall or boat bulkhead with separate mounting options: Brass (#705) or Chrome (#905) Gimbal Mount which ensures the lamp sways securely while underway (sold separately).

  • Solid cast & tooled brass
  • Wind-resistant glass enclosed flame

  • “C” hook for easy hanging

  • Replacement wicks available for purchase in 3-packs (#770-3)

Boat: Island Packet 27, BLISS
came with two weems & plath yacht lamps -- the regular and the mini. I got the bottoms off so can fill them with and replace the wicks (thank you, Chief Engineer!) and polished them up. They're gorgeous. But I still can't figure out how on earth to light the darned things.

Where do they open to light the wicks?

Thanks!

.}{1 Instructions for use of the burners
Follow these tips to ensure that you get many years of use from your oil burner.
.}{1 Remove the oil holder from the lamp before filling it with lamp oil.
.}{2 Remove the lamp chimney and carefully unscrew the burner (be careful not to use the stem of the burner as a lever when doing this).
.}{3 Fill the oil holder approximately 3/4 full with pure petroleum or a colorless lamp oil.
.}{4 Screw the burner back on the oil holder again. Leave the wick to become fully saturated for approximately 30 minutes.
.}{5 Turn up the wick until it emerges just above the wick holder.
.}{6 If necessary, trim the wick level using a pair of scissors or sharp knife.
.}{7 After the wick, replace the lamp chimney and keep the flame low until the cold glass has time to warm so as to prevent the glass from cracking.
.}{8 Now adjust the flame such that there is no smoke. When the lamp is first used this adjustment will need to be repeated a number of times as the wick stretches.
.}{9 To extinguish the burner, turn the wick down until the flame goes out.
.}{10 Allow the lamp chimney to cool before relighting the lamp.
.}{11 To prevent the swollen wick from damaging the turning mechanism of burners, it is recommended that the wick be replaced on an annual basis.

Confused by Weems and Plath lantern

  • Add to quote

weems and plath yacht lamp instructions

Pretty simple, to not so really. The tank at the bottom unscrews, you light the wick and screw the tank back in. Pretty simple in the manor of how to etc. BUT tricky to make sure as you screw it back in, or the top to the base you do not drop the thing because the two parts are not connected. To unlight the wick, there is a small wire at the bottom of the tank/unit that will pull the wick part down, or you can push it up to get more flame. Marty

Ahhhh thanks, looking forward to trying it this weekend then.

weems and plath yacht lamp instructions

I just bought the mini latern and gimble. We will use it on the boat for the first time this week. I tested the latern at home and I will warn you it gets hot. The light it gives off was not much but enough for the boat salon in the evening I am guessing. I did notice that the light seems to pulsate a bit. I am guessing this is because of lack of oxygen flow from the bottom of the unit. i will report back on how it works on our salon this coming week.

weems and plath yacht lamp instructions

The mini was Christmas present for my boat last year. It's very nice looking but I was a bit disappointed by the light, and as you say it gets really really hot. It's bright enough that you can go below and find the light switch, but not much brighter. Although that's basically what I want sailing at night when I like some light below in-case I have to go down there but not too much that it's distracting. I've found that mine goes out on it's own sometimes. I think it's because the flame was too large and it ran out of oxygen. But yeah, the lantern is very simple. You pour the oil down the hole the wick comes out of and use the bent wire to "grab" the wick and slide it up and down.

I have not used the mini yet, altho I do have one, along with the big one. There is some flicker, it maybe oxygen per say, altho a candle in the open flickers also! so to me, O@ is not the issue, just normal air mix that fluctuates. You can add some of the fragrant oils, works ok, but frankly, we prefer the non fragrant style WP sells as do some other brands. The wick does last a while. I have yet to replace one in about 3-4 yrs use, not that I use it a lot either! I keep it center in the saloon area, with a small air vent on the cabin top. Marty

weems and plath yacht lamp instructions

Mine---from Weems & Plath---has the little bent stiff wire through the bottom with which you can poke the lighted wick up and down to adjust the flame. At a boat show last week I saw a less-expensive almost-identical no-name copy that had no wick adjustment. Recommend you use highest-quality fuel you can find, sometimes called 'candle' grade, but the unit will burn smelly kerosene, too.

We have one, never use it. It sits on the fireplace mantle at the house as a decoration.

weems and plath yacht lamp instructions

Hi, My boat came with two, mounted port and starboard on bulkheads in the main salon. They work fine, but don't put out a lot of light. It's bright enough to see your way around the boat, but not bright enough to read by, even if you sit close to one. As mentioned, they do put out a fair amount of heat. That's nice when it's cold out, less so when it's warm. Mine looks great when it's just been polished, but it tarnishes pretty quickly. Barry

Hey Barry! You might find that most of the lamp can be kept bright longer by wiping it with vegetable oil after polishing. If any of it cooks off, the smoke won't hurt anyone. My Aladdin Lamp provides about as much light as a 60 watt bulb, but a lot of heat. Also great in cool weather. When it's hot I use the 12v lighting.

weems and plath yacht lamp instructions

A "cold blast" lantern will provide a lot more light. Those little "dead flame" yacht lamps are really more for "atmosphere" than actual lighting (or maybe as a sort of "night-light"). Kerosene lanterns with mantles, either pressurized ones like Coleman or non-pressurized ones like Aladdin, produce the most light (too much for my taste, as ones night vision is toasted by them) but also produce a lot of heat and fumes. A small boat cabin can be filled with lamp oil/kerosene fumes pretty quickly by a mantled lantern.
