Newport Yacht Club

  • Monday, September 16 2024

Newport Yacht Club is involved in various sailboat racing in four basic areas:

ONSHORE       OFFSHORE       INTERNATIONAL      FROSTBITE

Onshore racing consists of One Design  and handicap ( PHRF ) racing which is held within the bay (Narragansett Bay). These races are held weekly on Tuesday and Wednesday starting mid May through the end of September. Plus Newport Yacht Club hosts several special regattas. See the full NYC Onshore Racing schedule here . All Onshore Racing is managed by the Newport Yacht Club Race Committee. Volunteering for the Race Committee is a great way to get out on the water, meet new people and help preserve and grow the sport of sailing. Learn more about Race Committee here .

Offshore racing consists of the Offshore 160 , New England Solo/Twin , Mitchell Memorial Day and Columbus Day Regattas , and the Bermuda One/Two which race anywhere from to Block Island, outside of Block Island and Rhode Island Sounds to all the way to St. George’s, Bermuda.  The Offshore 160 is held every even year, the Bermuda One-Two is held every odd year and the New England Solo/Twin is held every year.  The Offshore 160, New England Solo/Twin and the Bermuda One-Two are short handed races (1 or 2 crew). The Mitchell races are held on Memorial and Columbus Day weekends and they consist of a staggered start crewed race to Block Island and spending the weekend on the Block.

International racing includes the OSTAR , TWOSTAR and JESTER CHALLENGE .  These races are also short handed races with the OSTAR and JESTER CHALLENGE races being single handed and the TWOSTAR a double handed race.  These races start in the United Kingdom and finish in Newport, RI.

Frostbite racing is held starting on 1 January and every Sunday to middle April.  These races are in single person dinghies and sailed right in front of the Newport Yacht Club.

Clam Harbor Yacht Club

Welcome to the new home of Clam Harbor Yacht Club!

In 1952, 6 friends got together and happened to discover that none belonged to any yacht club so they decided to start their own. One of the first principles of the club was that there would be no discrimination. The group was to be composed of "chiefs without Indians, officers without enlisted men." Things started out delightfully with the 6 men rolling dice to see who would be Commodore. Tom Mayor won the distinction over the other founding members of Bill and Don Edgerley, Hugh Loughran, Jack Loud and Ralph Kenney.

Today, our membership is over 200 strong and our principles remain the same. All are welcome to join us, get involved and enjoy the camaraderie of boating together!
