Footage has emerged of the moment the 46m motoryacht Moatize crashed into a wharf in Cairns Marlin Marina after suffering from a technical fault. The captain and crew were able to respond to the situation in an appropriate manner and fortunately no one was hurt.

The incident occurred when the yacht was docking at the Cairns marina at around 6pm on Saturday night. The vessel only suffered cosmetic damage but collided with the pier very close to waterfront diners and, as a result, part of the marina and a nearby restaurant have closed while the site is restored.

Following the incident, local press interviewed  Moatize ’s captain about the cause of the crash and his response. “We came [into the marina] and did a tight turn… and our starboard gear was stuck ahead when I selected the go astern,” he told local news outlet The Daily Telegraph .

“We used the bow thruster to come over into a clear vision, went astern to exit the marina, but it was still going ahead at all times. We took control in the wheelhouse to try and see if it was a technical fault on the controls, but it was still going ahead again. So, we did what we’re trained to in collisions: we shut down all engines, dropped an anchor and thank God we selected a nice spot where there were no personnel.”

Regarding the damage caused to the boat and the affected infrastructure, he added; “I am not even worried about the money and neither is the owner. We are just making sure that everyone here is still functioning, that no one is put out, and there is no injury – that’s our only concern.”

Cairns crash

This is the incredible moment a multimillion-dollar superyacht went careering into the Cairns Marlin Marina.

Nobody was hurt, but visitors enjoying the sunset ended up with quite a dinner show when the Moatize simply failed to stop as it made its way back to the wharf.

Watch the video above.

Prawn Star runs "ocean to plate" floating restaurants out of the Cairns marina.

The company was upfront about the incident, posting video on its Facebook page on Sunday morning.

"Never a dull moment at the Prawn Star," the post read.

"Everyone was safe but a little shaken after this happened yesterday! Thank you to our amazing crew for handling it so well."

In the video, deckhands can be seen waving frantically, warning people on the wharf.

But there were no injuries and the company is now assessing damage to the pier.

Superyacht crash video shows 77m Go colliding with Caribbean dock

  • Superyachts

Footage has emerged of a 235ft superyacht crashing into a luxury Caribbean yacht club’s pier, causing visible damage to both the yacht and the dock.

Onlookers were shocked last week (February 24) when a 235ft (77m) superyacht collided with the dock of Sint Maarten Yacht Club in the Caribbean.

Video footage of the incident shows the extent of the damage – while the pier took the brunt of it, the superyacht’s steel hull didn’t come off unscathed.

Computer malfunction was to blame for the sickening superyacht crash, according to local publication The Daily Herald , which adds that no-one was injured as a result.

The incident took place at around 1015 local time and the newspaper added that an insurer had already been to assess the extent of the damage by the end of the day.

$118 million superyacht crashes into Caribbean pier after computer malfunction

A single malfunction has caused a 72 metre superyacht worth almost $120 million to smash into a Caribbean yacht club pier.

This is the shocking moment a 72 metre superyacht smashes into a luxury Caribbean yacht club’s pier after a “computer malfunction”.

The superyacht, worth $118 million, was caught on video slowly crashing into the dock, in Simpson Bay, Saint Maarten last week.

Superyacht Go, which is fitted with a helipad, a steam room, a swimming pool and its own hospital, ploughed into the wooden pier, breaking apart the wooden jetty and a concrete wall.

In one video, an onlooker can be heard saying “oh my God” repeatedly as the vessel crashed into the pier.

The captain of Go was attempting to leave the Simpson Bay Lagoon at Ile de Sol Marina at 10.15am on Wednesday when the crash happened.

It is believed that the cause of the crash had to do with a “computer malfunction” and when the superyacht was being towed out of the marina, a huge gouge was spotted on the side of the vessel.

The AU$118 million superyacht has its own helipad, hospital and swimming pool on board

It is not yet known how much it will cost to repair the dock or the superyacht but a manager for the yacht club told the Mail Online that it could take months.

St Maarten Yacht Club’s dock has been closed until further notice.

A notice posted on its website on Wednesday read: “As most of you will have heard by now, this morning an accident occurred with a mega yacht.

“They lost control over the vessel and hit the dock of the St Maarten Yacht Club.

“Nobody was injured and the damage is solely structural, however, it is very significant.

“We are currently assessing the extent of the damage to make a plan to rebuild.”

St Maarten Yacht Club General Manager Michele Korteweg told the Daily Herald: “If the piles supporting the structure are still solid and stable, it should be easier to rebuild.

“If that’s not the case we will have to replace the piles which could take months.

“But in the meantime, we will come up with a temporary solution in order to be operational as quick as possible, at least at the minimum to connect the wooden accessway to the concrete dock.”

The superyacht was caught on video smashing into a wooden pier in Simpson Bay, St Maarten last Wednesday

Other witnesses told the Mail Online that the superyacht had become entangled with the propeller of an old sailboat at sea when it was about to dock.

This isn’t the first time a massive yacht crashed into a pier in St Maarten.

In December 2019, a superyacht, owned by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, accidentally ripped a Caribbean dock apart after its captain last control.

Tourists enjoying the view were filmed running away from the edge of Simpson Bay Bridge, St Maarten when the swerving vessel began to speed up.

It is believed fierce weather conditions including gale-force winds pushed the yacht to the side, eventually pushing it into the control booth.

Below Deck Down Under’s Captain Jason Chambers crashed a superyacht in 2019

Below Deck Down Under Captain Jason Chambers yacht crash

The newest franchise of Bravo’s popular Below Deck franchise has just been christened on Peacock! Below Deck Down Under introduces viewers to the crew of the superyacht M/Y Thalassa , sailing the waters of the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Australia.

The crew includes a familiar face for Below Deck fans, chief stew Aesha Scott. However, all the initial buzz seems to surround M/Y Thalassa’ s hunky skipper, Captain Jason Chambers! Unfortunately for the newly christened Bravolebrity, this won’t be the first time he has received international media attention.

Captain Jason Chambers Yacht Crash

Jason Chambers was the captain of the 45.6-meter superyacht Moatize when it crashed into a Queensland marina in 2019, narrowly missing a restaurant trawler. Videos of the frightening crash went viral, and Jason spoke with an Australian news outlet to explain what happened.

“We came in and did a tight turn, which we have to do, and our starboard gear was stuck ahead when I selected to go astern,” Captain Jason explained to 7News Sydney soon after the accident. (Video embedded below.) “We could have taken out one of the other vessels, a [Timber?] schooner there, which had personnel on there, so the damage could have been a catastrophe.”

More from Captain Jason on his actions after the malfunction:

We used about thrust to come over into a clear vision, went astern to exit the marina, but it was still going ahead at all times. We took control in the wheelhouse to try and see if it was a technical fault on the controls, still going ahead again. We did what we’re…trained to in collisions. So, we shut down all engines, dropped an anchor, and thank God we selected a nice spot where there was no personnel.
You had a restaurant on the right hand side, you had a lot of people onlooking straight ahead, I had a gap with a lot of small vessels on my starboard side, so that was my best solution is come over where there was no personnel.

Captain Jason said the yacht completed all of its sea trials in Brisbane just prior to the crash. “These things happen,” he added.

When asked about the amount of damage to Moatize , Captain Jason said his focus was elsewhere. “I’m not even worried about the money, to be quite honest…We’re just making sure that everyone here is still functioning — the businesses — and there’s no one here that’s put out, and there’s no injuries. That’s the only concern.”

In summary, the vessel had a malfunction and Captain Jason Chambers avoided any significant damage or injuries with his actions.

Superyacht Moatize Crash Videos

I’ve collected some videos of the Moatize crash and embedded them below. The first is a news report that includes multiple angles, and is by far the best as far as getting an accurate perspective of what happened. The last video is the interview with Captain Jason just after the crash.

You can catch Captain Jason probably not crashing M/Y Thalassa by checking out Below Deck Down Under , now streaming on Peacock!

Captain Jason Chambers has attracted attention for being the youngest captain in the history of the Below Deck franchise.

But it turns out that the Below Deck Down Under captain made headlines long before he entered the world of reality TV.

In 2019, he was captaining a luxury superyacht in Cairns, Queensland when a mechanical failure caused the vessel to crash into a marina.

Making matters worse, the yacht narrowly missed a seafood restaurant on the marina called Prawn Star.

'It was scary, people were screaming and very frightened. But no-one was hurt and that's the most important thing,' Prawn Star's manager told ABC at the time.

Luckily, Jason's quick thinking under pressure was credited for lessening the impact of the crash.

'We used about thrust to come clear, went astern to try and exit the marina but it was still going ahead at all times,' he told 7News .

'We took control in the wheelhouse to see if it was a control fault, it was still going ahead so we did what we're trained to in collisions,' he continued.

'We shut down all engines, dropped an anchor and thank God we selected a nice spot where there was no personnel.'

Jason also confirmed that a jammed gear was the cause of the crash, and that the multimillion-dollar superyacht only sustained superficial damage in the accident.

Meanwhile, Below Deck Down Under is set to premiere exclusively on hayu in Australia on March 18.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the tropical Whitsunday Islands and world-famous Great Barrier Reef in north-eastern Australia, Below Deck Down Under explores the complex, often explosive dynamics of the crew and a rotating group of demanding charter guests on M/Y Thalassa.

The handsome Captain Chambers is featured prominently in the trailer, and in one scene he flaunts his muscular physique while exiting the water.

Setting the tone for the entire crew, the new captain has a hands-on leadership approach and will do whatever it takes to make sure the guests have an unforgettable vacation, including mesmerising under-water excursions like scuba diving, snorkelling, and some close encounters with marine life.

Though the dynamics on board are initially smooth sailing, a boatload of problems bubble up when the chef immediately falls out of sync with the chief stewardess.

The deck team also hits rocky waters when the bosun’s firm management style is called into question by a free-spirited team member with an aversion to rules.

Between charters, the yachties blow off steam by taking full advantage of Australia’s world-renowned nightlife, where drama, surprising flirtations, and wild adventures heat up their well-deserved nights off.

Fan favourite Aesha Scott, best known for appearing on Below Deck Mediterranean, will serve as Chief Stewardess this season.

The trailer has already teased some explosive clashes between Aesha and outspoken chef Ryan McKeown.

Other scenes show some raunchy hot tub hook-ups, demanding guests, and some extremely dangerous mishaps on board.

In one scene, a crew member appears to be burned after a BBQ bursts into flames in his face.

Shocking moment 235ft superyacht worth £65m smashes into dock after ‘computer malfunction’

THIS is the shocking moment a 235ft superyacht smashes into a luxury Caribbean yacht club's pier after a "computer malfunction".

The superyacht, worth £65million, was caught on video slowly crashing into the dock, in Simpson Bay, St Maarten on Wednesday.

The superyacht was caught on video smashing into a wooden pier in Simpson Bay, St Maarten last Wednesday

Superyacht Go, which is fitted with a helipad, a steam room, a swimming pool and its own hospital, ploughed into the wooden pier, broke apart the wooden jetty and a concrete wall.

In one video, an onlooker can be heard saying "oh my God" repeatedly as the vessel crashed into the pier.

The captain of Go was attempted to leave the Simpson Bay Lagoon at Ile de Sol Marina at 10.15am on Wednesday when the crash happened.

It is believed that the cause of the crash had to do with a "computer malfunction" and when the superyacht was being towed out of the marina, a huge gouge was spotted on the side of the vessel.

It is not yet known how much it will cost to repair the dock or the superyacht but a manager for the yacht club told the Mail Online that it could take months.

St Maarten Yacht Club's dock has been closed until further notice.

A notice posted on its website on Wednesday read: "As most of you will have heard by now, this morning an accident occurred with a mega yacht.

"They lost control over the vessel and hit the dock of the Sint Maarten Yacht Club.

"Nobody was injured and the damage is solely structural, however, it is very significant.

"We are currently assessing the extent of the damage to make a plan to rebuild."

Sint Maarten Yacht Club General Manager Michele Korteweg told the  Daily Herald : "If the piles supporting the structure are still solid and stable, it should be easier to rebuild.

"If that’s not the case we will have to replace the piles which could take months.

"But in the meantime, we will come up with a temporary solution in order to be operational as quick as possible, at least at the minimum to connect the wooden accessway to the concrete dock."

Other witnesses told the Mail Online that the superyacht had become entangled with the propeller of an old sailboat at sea when it was about to dock.

Factbox-What We Know About the Sinking of the Superyacht off Sicily

ROME (Reuters) -Seven people are believed to have died, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and Morgan Stanley's Jonathan Bloomer, after a luxury yacht belonging to Lynch's family sank off the northern coast of Sicily on Monday.

Here is what we know about the Aug. 19 accident.

VIOLENT STORM

The Bayesian, a British flagged 56-metre (184-feet) superyacht, sank in the dark shortly before 5 am (0300 GMT) off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, after being hit by a "violent storm," the Italian coast guard said.

The coast guard said bad weather had been forecast, but added that it was more virulent than expected.

Some locals spoke of a waterspout, or sea whirlwind, of exceptional force.

THE OTHER BOAT

The nearby yacht, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell, remained anchored and weathered the storm after its captain turned on the engine to keep control and avoid a collision with the Bayesian.

The captain, Karsten Borner, said he did not know if the crew of the Bayesian had managed to switch on its engines.

"I only know that they went flat with the mast on the water and that they sank in two minutes," he said.

'INCOMPREHENSIBLE'

Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Milan Polytechnic university, said a boat the size of the Bayesian could only sink so rapidly by taking in a huge amount of water.

He suggested that one or more portholes, windows or other openings may have been left open, broken or smashed by the waterspout, letting in water.

However, an industry expert in Britain said it should have taken hours for the Bayesian to fill up with enough water to sink it, making its swift demise incomprehensible.

Matthew Schanck, chair of Britain's Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said the Bayesian was the victim of a so-called black swan, a rare event with a high impact.

RECORD MAST

The Bayesian featured the world's tallest aluminium mast, measuring 72 metres.

A tall mast has a lot of surface area exposed to the wind, but Ratti and structural engineer Filippo Mattioni said it is not by itself an element of vulnerability in a storm.

Fire department diver Marco Tilotta said the wreck was intact and the mast was still attached. He added, that divers had not been able to inspect the full length of the mast but the section they had seen was undamaged.

RETRACTABLE KEEL

The Bayesian had a retractable keel - a stabilising structure under the hull which can be partially lifted to reduce the depth of the ship when entering shallow waters or harbours.

Both Ratti and Mattioni wondered if the yacht had been anchored with the keel up, compromising its stability in a violent storm.

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Perini Navi, an Italian luxury yacht maker. It was refitted twice but not by Perini, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini, said the yacht was "one of the safest boats in the world" and basically unsinkable.

He added that its sinking was due to a chain of human errors given that the storm was expected, speaking in interviews to Italian media.

Had the crew shut all doors and hatches, turned on the engine, lifted the anchor, lowered the keel and turned the yacht to face the wind, they would have suffered "zero damage", the CEO said.

He added that data showed it took 16 minutes from when the wind began buffeting the yacht, and it began taking on water, for it to sink.

I was running a new 61 Viking up the coast, pulled into Fernandina for fuel and nite stop. Maneuvered around the docks and one engine rev'd up with no command. It was in N. I did not dare put it in gear. Shut down worked. Was able to get docked with the other engine and dockhands. Owner called, had a MAN tech sent out, trouble shot the system and said everything was fine. And it did work ok for the rest of the trip. Sketched me out.

Did I miss it or were warning signals sounded before the filming started in the #1 post video? Seems like there should have been horns sounding at least up to first contact with the dock to keep folks away and again for the second hit.
