Byte is a 12 ′ 0 ″ / 3.7 m monohull sailboat designed by Ian Bruce and built by Ovington Boats Ltd., Xtreme Sailing Products, Nautivela, and Zim Sailing starting in 1973. Rig and SailsAuxilary power, accomodations, calculations. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more. Classic hull speed formula: Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL Sail Area / Displacement RatioA measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more. SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3 - SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement RatioA measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize. Ballast / Displacement * 100 Displacement / Length RatioA measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more. D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³ - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort RatioThis ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more. Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 ) - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening FormulaThis formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more. CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64) Topper International Ltd. Just sailingRe: Byte Sailboat Ah, the power of Google. http://sfbytes.googlegroups.com/web/Byte owner's manual.pdf Re: Byte Sailboat Thank you torrid. Is there a byte sailing group in the SF Bay Area? I live in Tracy and work in Redwood City. Re: Byte Sailboat I just went to Google, and that was the first thing that popped up. I guess that website would have details on when/where they meet. Super Opinionated and Always CorrectHuskydad said: I just bought a used 2000 Byte sailboat. Where can I get an owners manual for it? Click to expand... Re: Byte Sailboat Wow!!! I didn't think the Byte was so bad. Maybe you could be more specific in explaining the downfalls of this boat. Thanks Re: Byte Sailboat first, you must be a newbie to the forum 'cause that is our version of humor. second, the Byte is probably a good boat for what it's worth, but it's not a laser. third, even other members on The Byte Forum would probably agree with statement above. fourth, i would not recommend attempting to sell your Byte on TLF, but i'm sure you'll find a number of fine used lasers in the Boats for Sale section when you're ready to purchase. Re: Byte Sailboat goto: http://www.byteclass.org/ there are some nice vids from the designer of the Byte explaining why it's a better boat than the laser ... Also checkout the Mega Byte (it's larger brother), it kinda looks like a Force 5. Upside down?Re: Byte Sailboat The Byte was designed for lighter weight sailors. Pretty popular in Canada, obviously, and the Far East. I think it's fair to say that the class didn't really catch on in the USA. A few years ago the manufacturer introduced a new rig, the CII, which features a more bendable (carbon) spar. So now there are really two versions of the boat. Why buy a Byte CI or CII? The boat was designed to look stunning and with the colourful, fully battered main the boat just comes to life and is outstanding. The boat is comfortable to sail, with its high boom, centre sheeting, no catching on the transom when gybing and with user friendly controls, the boat just handles like a dream in all ...

This boat is a lot of fun for the 90- to 165-pound crowd. The edges of the cockpit are nicely chamfered for comfortable hiking. All rigging in excellent condition; all stored indoors throughout the year.
The Byte CII is a fast and fun singlehanded one-design dinghy. The CII’s carbon (II) two piece mast and fully battened mylar sail offer more power adjustment than found on similar boats. This allows sailors with a wider weight range (100-165 lbs) to sail in a broader range of conditions.

All Byte Sailing Dinghies for sale. Sail number 3605 Very good condition as hardly used, top spec Cover, folding trolley with new tyres, rudder/centreboard bag, etc... read more. A lovely lively boat, fun and ready to sail , lots of controls to play with and quick to rig.
Designed to determine if a boat has blue water capability. The CSF compares beam with displacement since excess beam contributes to capsize and heavy displacement reduces capsize vulnerability. The boat is better suited for ocean passages (vs coastal cruising) if the result of the calculation is 2.0 or less. The lower the better.
