First look: Dazcat Ocean Cruiser 55

This new flagship Dazcat Ocean Cruiser 55 has been designed to be able to make progress even in very light airs, thereby reducing engine use
Product Overview
The Multihull Centre in Cornwall is no stranger to innovation. The Millbrook yard, nestled up a Tamar creek, has undertaken some fascinating custom projects, including in recent years the full rebuild and conversion to a luxury powercat of the Gunboat 55 Rainmaker , which dismasted and was lost at sea. It has designed and built bespoke wheelchair accessible fast multis, including the record breaking Impossible Dream , which Geoff Holt sailed across the Atlantic unassisted. And the Rapier 550 was another project that we could tell was way ahead of its time when we sailed it in 2014 – in terms of push-button sailing a large cat from inside.
Since 1988 Dazcat has been its long term small production range of cruiser-racers, a brand named after founder and co-designer Darren Newton. Thanks to the world’s biggest YouTube sailing channel ( Sailing La Vagabonde ) doing a recent vlog on them, Dazcat is currently in the limelight and it unveiled plans earlier this year for this new flagship Dazcat Ocean Cruiser 55.
This Dazcat Ocean Cruiser 55 is aimed at very fast, yet easy ocean cruising, designed for two to four people to live on for extended periods in cold or warm climes and with occasional guests. It mixes contemporary styling throughout with Dazcat’s liberal sprinkling of innovation and lightweight composite expertise. We had a fascinating full virtual tour earlier this year.
internal helm option is next to a large navstation with a large skylight to view the mainsail
One objective of the design is to be able to make progress even in very light airs, thereby reducing engine use. The hulls are easily driven thanks to a slender 13:1 waterline beam to length ratio and super fine reverse bows. And it’s only 12 tonnes lightweight – that’s two tonnes less than the Arcona 50 or the Outremer 55 ! Plus it can take a four tonne payload.
At the same time the boat is engineered to withstand the very high stresses associated with driving hard in big winds. The spreader-less carbon rig, for instance, has fibre standing rigging and is designed to be set up with sufficient tension to fly a hull without the lee shrouds becoming slack. Other rig options include an in-boom furler or even a wing sail.
A high freeboard and high bridgedeck clearance keeps solid water away from the deck, while a well defined water deflecting chine forward helps to provide a dry ride. Optional electric furlers and sheeting on rewind winches allow the headsails to be controlled from anywhere on the boat. This theme extends to alarm systems that can be set for wind or boat speed limits. If the crew doesn’t respond in a given time the system will take over, for instance by automatically easing the mainsheet traveller.
The Dazcat Ocean Cruiser 55 has also been designed with a plethora of helm positions to suit all, including interior and exterior, forward and aft, swing and twin wheels – take your pick or have the lot!
Bathing platforms allow easy access from the tender, even in swell. Note range of helm positions
“Everyone we spoke to wants steering positions in a different place,” explains Newton. “We’ve developed a carbon steering rod through the length of the boat that all these steering wheels can connect to directly.” This can be retrofitted at a later date if a new owner wants a different configuration.
The forward cockpit can be used for access and relaxation or to manually trim sails too. Its twin forward winches are designed to control an optional parasail, which Dazcat recommends in combination with in-boom reefing.
The large aft cockpit connects seamlessly to a large living area including galley. To help control internal temperatures the thickness of the core material for the hardtop was increased to provide additional insulation against solar heating, and where possible there’s an overhang above windows to reduce the amount of direct sun they receive. In addition the designers have tried to maximise passive airflow with big opening windows in the front of the coachroof, in addition to the door to the forward cockpit, plus plenty of opening deck hatches.

The main feature of this Dazcat is the adoption of a forward cockpit/maneuvering station, with the wheel just behind, at the front of the nacelle. Another helm station is located mid-height, to starboard. This new Dazcat maintains a strict weight schedule, with carefully centered masses, and is able to take the ground thanks to its shoal draft when the appendages (carbon daggerboards) are raised. As for the bimini, this has been designed to optimize the surface area of solar panels, which also largely cover the dinghy on its davits. Optionally, the Ocean Cruiser can be propelled by a hybrid diesel/electric drivetrain. Darren Newton, or Daz built his first catamaran Dazcat 1 with the help of his parents Rodney and Sonia and his brother Carl. He’d been a keen Hobiecat sailor in his teenage years and ended up winning the Round the Island race on his first boat. Then came the second build: Renegade after which he moved to Millbrook in Cornwall to work on the third Dazcat and set up the business.
In 1994 he won the Trans-Atlantic with Bob Beggs on Active Air (Dazcat 3).
In 1999, Multimarine was formed. Business expanded into building boats from other designers and maintenance work which helped the business grow on a solid footing going into the new millennium. In 2013, the company bought the Multihull Centre (previously run by Pat Patterson from Heavenly Twins) allowing them to expand their services into brokerage and berthing.
The combined strengths of Dazcat, Multimarine and the Multihull Centre have enabled the group to grow steadily over recent years with rising demand for their services and products including a refit for Gunboat 55 Rainmaker which was salvaged and relaunched as a performance power cat.

Description
The Dazcat 1295 ‘Slinky Malinki’ represents an exceptional performance catamaran meticulously engineered for both blue water cruising and competitive racing, whether shorthanded or fully crewed.
A lot of work has gone into reducing systems weights on the boat and t he Dazcat 1295 is distinguished by a lower beam-to-length ratio when compared to its peers of similar length. This unique design choice minimizes wind resistance and imparts excellent performance attributes, particularly when sailing upwind. Comfort of ride is of utmost importance in the design process and the addition of rudder t foils on Slinky Malinki further enhances this by minimising pitch.
Slinky Malinki sleeps six or seven in three cabins with ample storage. Living space is both practical and comfortable and the signature half up Dazcat galley allows crew to cook up delicious meals while keeping a 360 view on the boat and what’s happening on deck.

Full Details
Vessel details full inventory coming soon, dazcat 1295 ‘slinky malinki’.
Slinky Malinki’s robust yet lightweight composite construction offers several distinct advantages. In addition to superb speeds and outstanding light wind performance, its reduced weight necessitates a smaller rig size, thus diminishing both loads and wear on vital lines and equipment. Furthermore, this lightweight construction combined with the cable steering make the helm incredibly light and responsive. Sheet and halyard loads are also reduced, facilitating ease of handling and helping to keep the crew fresher and happy.
Whether enjoyed by a family or a group of sailing enthusiasts, the D1295 offers an exhilarating experience aboard a fast and responsive vessel. Its impressive speed broadens the scope of your cruising adventures and means you also have a wider array of destination choices. Passage times are significantly reduced, the need for motoring is minimised, and Slinky Malinki keeps sailing even in the faintest of breezes. This Dazcat 1295 has proven its remarkable sailing performance, which in turn gives remarkable enjoyment.
Comfort is of paramount concern during the design process. Elevated speeds can sometimes lead to an uneven ride, but the D1295 mitigates this by centralizing weight distribution and the addition of the rudder t foils on Slinky Malinki. Centralised weight is achieved through the elevation of the saloon flooring in the vessel’s center and positioning of tankage and systems underneath. This design also reduces wiring complexity.
In the cockpit, extensive consideration has been given to the dual helm and crew positions, which are placed forward once again to maintain central weight distribution. A raised cockpit with optional (removeable) helm seating grants excellent visibility in all directions. Lines run back to the cockpit and winches and clutches are positioned directly in front of the helmsperson, providing quick and easy access to all lines and facilitating effortless single-handed sailing while also enhancing safety. Dual helm positions also offer the advantage of escaping the turbulent airflow caused by the jib, allowing the helm to operate in clean air and offering a more comfortable and effective steering experience.
The interior layout has been meticulously crafted to optimize saloon space, featuring the starboard side galley positioned partially below the raised flooring. This arrangement allows you to work in the galley at a lower height, ensuring eye level remains aligned with the saloon windows giving clear all round views. The unobstructed view provided by this design choice also effectively helps to mitigate motion sickness. The D1295 is designed to comfortably accommodate your family and friends, providing berths for up to seven individuals. These accommodations include twin double cabins aft, one forward cabin, and a convertible saloon sofa.
On the port side of the saloon there is a navigation area and small chart table. Slinky Malinki has the full B&G H5000 system. This includes 4 x B&G Zeus Chart plotters with one at the nav station, one in the owner’s cabin and one at each helm station.
Construction Methods and Materials
Each Dazcat is hand crafted by composite engineers and boat builders who understand the exacting requirement needed to produce a very strong but lightweight structure. Combined with clever design and material processing, this makes Dazcats half the weight of a standard production catamaran, with the strength for offshore cruising and racing. Only high quality materials are used in our boats, and each is specified individually to its purpose. Materials include protective 65PA gel coat, vinylester and Isothalic resin with multi-axial and uni-directional engineered fabrics. Core materials are PVC foam for the hull structure, wet-deck, bridge deck canopy and bulkheads. Interior finishes include gel coat, painted, timber, and lined surfaces. Carbon reinforcements protect the bridge deck and beam joints; Kevlar hull. Built using female tooling.
