Billionaire businessman John Caudwell has given TV viewers a glimpse inside his very own yacht for a new documentary.

The founder of Phones4U showed off Titania for Channel 5's Secrets of the Luxury Super Yachts.

He had snapped up 73-metre long boat at auction for the bargain price of €34 million in 2010 – roughly half its estimated value.

Named after the fairy queen in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Titania underwent a stem-to-stern retrofit two years later.

It now boasts its very own inflatable water park with a 12.7 metre long waterslide, crew and nightclub.

Titania is one of the world’s 5,000 or so privately-owned yachts.

And anyone interested in a life on the high seas can rent it out for €630,000 a week in the high season with the Caudwell family only using it for around four weeks a year.

Even celebrities and members of the Royal Family have chartered Titania.

It is all a far cry from playing in the canal near his home growing up in Wellesley Street, Shelton, before he made a fortune from flogging mobile phones.

During his childhood, he used to sail lollipop sticks on the Trent and Mersey before graduating to  building rafts.

The 67-year-old - who has previously appeared on TV to show off his Mayfair mansion -  said: “The whole objective was to turn it into a fun boat with great food, a happy, smiling crew and all the facilities anyone could want.

"If someone wants white, starchy service they won’t get that here; it’s just all to do with friendliness and efficiency.

"Of course the service is first class though. My crew are wonderful – they are very well paid and get phenomenal tips.

"I chose the name Titania. I wanted a figurehead which was elegant and feminine. I considered several names, but Titania, a character from Shakespeare's   Midsummer Night's Dream, was best able to portray the image I wanted for what is a fantastically elegant and sexy yacht.

"Many celebrities including A-list music and film personalities, plus members of the British Royal family have been aboard.

"At least 100 people could enjoy the main deck, with maybe another 20 to 30 on the nightclub deck at sea level."

Mr Caudwell attended Shelton Church of England School  and then Berry Hill High School before abandoning his A-levels to become an apprentice at Michelin and later becoming a second-hand car dealer.

john caudwell yacht titania

With his brother Brian, in 1987 John registered Midland Mobile Phones as a mobile phone wholesaler taking 26 Motorola mobiles at £1,350 each.

It took eight months to sell all 26 phones to  plumbers, taxi drivers and television repairmen at a price of £2,000 each.

The company made a loss every month for the first two years of operations.

However, the business then grew exponentially and he sold Phones4u
in 2006 for just under £1.5 billion.

He has since concentrated on his charity work including setting up Stoke-based Caudwell Children .

A Bar at Sea Level

Caudwell added a sauna and bar at sea level that “will appeal to people who want to party.” The yacht was stretched 12 feet to accommodate the changes.

Owner’s Suite

A second master suite with 270-degree views was added during the yacht’s renovation to expand Titania’s VIP accommodations.

john caudwell yacht titania

"There are dozens of places on Titania to watch a film with friends," says Caudwell, who estimates there are 50 screens aboard, some of which drop down from the ceilings on the decks. Staff includes two chefs, a trainer and a masseuse.

john caudwell yacht titania

The 236-foot Titania was built in Germany in 2006 by Lurssen, the BMW of rarefied shipbuilders, whose works include Allen’s Octopus and Azzam, the world’s largest private yacht at 590 feet. (Superyacht prices range from $100 million to Azzam’s staggering $622 million.) When Caudwell bought Titania in 2010, he fretted that the owner’s suite so overshadowed its companion VIP suite in size and accoutrement that the difference might discomfit co-charterers unaccustomed to settling for second-best.

John Caudwell's yacht Titania has its own waterpark and nightclub

With its own water park and nightclub, the luxury super-yacht belonging a UK billionaire businessman has to be seen to be believed.

Phones4U co-founder John Caudwell's snapped up this 73-metre long yacht at auction in 2010 for €34 million, roughly half of its estimated value.

And he's showed his boat off in a documentary for Channel 5 called Secrets of the Luxury Super Yachts.

Titania, named after the fairy queen in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, had a stem-to-stern retrofit two years after Mr Caudwell snapped it up, adding an inflatable water park with a 12.7 metre long waterslide and nightclub, reports Stoke on Trent Live .

The Caudwell family use the yacht for around four weeks a year, leaving the yacht free for holidaymakers to hire for about €630,000 a week in the high season.

Those who have chartered the yacht include celebrities and members of the Royal Family.

Titania is one of the world’s 5,000 or so privately-owned yachts.

The billionaire's come a long way from modest beginnings growing up in Wellesley Street, Shelton, near Stoke on Trent.

He has spoken in the past about his childhood games sailing lollipop sticks on the Trent and Mersey - before graduating to building rafts.

The 67-year-old - who appeared on TV to show off his Mayfair mansion -  said: “The whole objective was to turn it into a fun boat with great food, a happy, smiling crew and all the facilities anyone could want.

Don’t miss

"At least 100 people could enjoy the main deck, with maybe another 20 to 30 on the nightclub deck at sea level."

Although a successful businessman now, Mr Caudwell attended Shelton Church of England School and then Berry Hill High School before abandoning his A-levels to become an apprentice at Michelin, later becoming a second-hand car dealer.

It was in 1987 when he and brother Brian registered Midland Mobile Phones as a mobile phone wholesaler, taking 26 Motorola mobiles at £1,350 each.

Inside a luxury yacht: A tour of superyacht Titania by its billionaire owner John Caudwell

Who knew the Phones 4U founder had a love for the seas? As an owner of several yachts, John Caudwell enjoys spending several weeks per year on the open water. His largest yacht is the Titania by Lurssen . At 73 meters in length and a 2000 gross tonnage, she is one of the largest and most luxurious yachts currently available for charter in Asia. Previously named Apoise, the yacht was originally built in 2006 and was 67m in length. When Caudwell acquired her through an auction, he revamped the entire ship, which included extending the length.

Founded in 1875 by Fredrich Lurssen, the German shipyard is known for crafting beautiful luxury yachts. In fact, Caudwell owns two from the specialists. When asked how his experience as a customer has been with Lurssen, he responds “they’re an exceptional superyacht builder. The quality and workmanship achieved on the conversion significantly exceeded my expectations. It was perfection. These were very significant changes and I have to say that Lurssen did an amazing job since it is completely impossible to see that the work has been done, even if you search for it.”

He states that he wanted the yacht to be very appealing to families of all ages and that the final ingredient is to have a passionate and wonderful crew. Where does the name come from, I ask? Titania is pretty unique. “I wanted a name that conjured up romanticism, mystery and excitement. I also wanted to install a bow sprit to make the boat even more distinctive. There are only a couple of boats out there that do this, one being Phoenix. I wanted a figure that was very feminine and attractive,” he says. Well Titania certainly does this and after further discussion, I learn that Titania is actually the name of the Queen of the Fairies from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Caudwell has created a beautiful sculpture of her in which he describes as “a scantily clad gorgeous lady with a little bit of romance and mystery.”

Purchasing a yacht this size is a big investment and a unique opportunity. Caudwell tells me that he found out the yacht was going for auction through some friends and he couldn’t believe it. “I did not believe that it was genuine, since it would be a very difficult sale to achieve by this methodology. I suspected that the sale would not be bona fide, but I was fascinated by the possibility. As I investigated the situation and its owner, Dave Ritchie, of Ritchie Bros Auctioneers, the more I realised this was a genuine sale.” He then flew to the Cayman Islands to spend the night on board the yacht and speak with the owner. “I fell in love with it and bought it, albeit after a few minutes of extreme tension as I was the only buyer in the room bidding against others on the telephone.”

As the yacht is available for charter, Caudwell only uses it around four weeks per year. He says if you’re looking to charter a yacht, make sure you know what the crew will be like and follow recommendations. “The yacht accommodation and interior design vary enormously, but the crew can make or break your holiday.” Caudwell is off to Thailand next, where he says “as a winter destination it is much more fascinating and magical than the Caribbean.”

Love, Pain & Money: The Making of a Billionaire

A super yacht plays the part of a super yacht in Mallorca

The super-yacht, Titania, owned by British billionaire John Caudwell, founder of Phones 4u, has been chartered to play the role of the Al Fayed yacht, Jonikal , as filming of the sixth series of the Netflix hit, The Crown continues on Mallorca. Caudwell has a fortune estimated at 1.2 billion pounds.

Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed were photographed aboard the Jonikal off the South of France. Infact the epic photograph of Princess Diana in a bathing costume sitting on the gangway was taken while she was aboard the Jonikal. In the weeks leading up to the tragedy in Paris, Princess Diana enjoyed days of seclusion aboard Jonikal . Joined only by staff members, the Princess and Dodi cruised through the Mediterranean along the Italian Riviera undetected by scrutinizing photographers until the paparazzi finally discovered Diana on the waning days of her holiday.
