92-Foot Luxury Yacht Stuck in Delray Beach Finally Removed

Viking yacht beached

One of the greatest fears among boat owners is being the subject of a viral video. Usually that anxiety is centered around things like docking at a busy marina or trying to navigate infamous passages like the Haulover Inlet.

Sadly, for the owner of a stunningly beautiful 92-foot (28 m) Viking luxury yacht, his dilemma has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Residents in Delray Beach, Florida awoke on Friday to the massive yacht beached next to residential homes.

It was stranded there the entire weekend until TowBoatrUS in Fort Lauderdale was able to free the vessel on Monday from its position.

Captain Larry Acheson, president of the company, told WPTV they had 20 people working to try and free the boat from its hangup.

"We had various vessels all with different missions," he told WPTV . "We had to pull the diesel fuel off board. Various people on the beach and various people on the disabled vessel. If it starts taking on water, we had to have people running the pumps."

Seth Stern from the ultra-popular boating YouTube channel Wavy Boats , told WPTV reporter Chris Gilmore "You'll never see a boat like this beached again in your lifetime."

"This is not a small boat. This is not a small operation," he added.

According to Stern, the Viking's engines locked up and a generator malfunctioned during high winds on the ocean off Delray Beach, resulting in the boat being unable to control its movement before being steadily pushed onshore by powerful waves. According to Delray Beach police, three people were onboard the vessel when it ran into trouble.

"The attempts that I have witnessed have been unsuccessful due to the lines snapping due to the sheer weight of the boat," Stern told WPTV .

"Today it's nice to see they're pumping off all the fuel and oil to prevent any kind of environmental spill for when they do pull this boat off. It'll also lighten the boat tremendously, making the rescue much easier," added Stern.

The boat, named Pastime , is a Viking Sport Fisherman with an estimated value of about $10 million USD. Viking Yachts are one of North America's most prized brands with a devoted following. The company was founded in 1964 by brothers Bob and Bill Healey and is widely regarded as one of the most innovative brands in boating . They're also popular among celebrities and big-time sport-fisherman thanks to their ability to blend luxury with hardcore fishing amenities. NBA legend Michael Jordan, who aside from his extensive basketball resume, is well-known for participating in sportfishing tournaments with his epic 80-foot Viking Catch-23 .

You can see Pastime in her predicament in the video from Wavy Boats below:

*UPDATE* 11/10/23- Viking has released a statement regarding the incident:

Viking 92 Freed from Florida Beach

' src=

This isn’t supposed to happen.

But last Friday afternoon, a Viking 92 sportfishing yacht named Pastime ended up on the beach in Delray Beach, Florida. The 151-ton boat, launched in 2016, was stuck in the sand, and couldn’t get off.

Despite heroic rescue efforts, it remained there for two days, until TowBoatUS was able to pump out more than 1,000 gallons of fuel and water and, working on a high tide, float it off. Remarkably, early reports say the Viking suffered just bent props and rudders. (I’ve been to the Viking factory in New Gretna, New Jersey, many times over the years; Vikings are built like little battleships.)

The problems started when a three-person crew was taking the boat from Palm Beach down to Fort Lauderdale. The details are scanty, but somehow the boat lost power off Delray Beach in 30-knot winds and 10-foot seas. The twin 2,600-hp MTU V12 diesels stopped, and the generator malfunctioned. Reports say the fire suppression system shut down the power for some reason.

In any event, the waves pushed the boat toward the beach, and there also apparently was a problem with the anchor. The captain decided to beach the boat to keep it from drifting.

He had first called the Coast Guard and both TowBoatUS and Sea Tow vessels responded. As you can see in the video below, their efforts to secure a line to the Pastime failed several times when the lines snapped.

Pastime was finally refloated on Sunday afternoon and it reportedly was taken to the Viking Service Center up in Riviera Beach on Lake Worth.

The boat, previously named Sweet Tuna , was sold last year. The asking price was $8,750,000.

Viking Yachts issued a statement saying that the yacht “encountered a fuel interruption to the generators and then main engines, at which point the 92 C lost power. It was set adrift as the captain and crew tried to resolve the problem. The crew tried to deploy the anchor by releasing the brake, but unfortunately, the devil claw was still attached. It subsequently was lodged in the deployment chute, rendering the anchor unusable. The 92 C came to rest on the shore in Delray Beach, Florida.”  It also said that technicians at the Viking service center “determined that the incident was not the result of manufacturing or design error and that the damage was minimal.”

92-foot luxury boat beached in Delray Beach since Friday removed

viking yacht past time

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — A 92-foot luxury boat worth several million dollars beached in Delray Beach since Friday was removed Sunday afternoon.

TowBoatrUS Ft. Lauderdale was able to move Past Time, which had lost power and beached at Linton Avenue, out of the sand.

The yacht was moved out of the way at 3:15 p.m. and headed on a three-hour trip to Viking Service Center in Riviera Beach.

Captain Larry Acheson, president of the company, said he had 20 people working to remove it since Friday.

"We had various vessels all with different missions," he told WPTV. "We had to pull the diesel fuel off board. Various people on the beach and various people on the disabled vessel. If it starts taking on water, we had to have people running the pumps."

Acheson said he could not disclose information on the owner.

Seth Stern with Wavy Boat, who had been taking video of the boat Past Time the past few days, told WPTV reporter Chris Gilmore "You'll never see a boat like this beached again in your lifetime."

The Viking 92's engines locked up and a generator malfunctioned in high winds, Stern said.

"This is not a small boat. This is not a small operation," Stern said.

Seth Stern with Wavy Boat. Nov. 6, 2023

On Sunday, crews with the Fort Lauderdale towing company were trying to get the yacht back in the water, including pumping out fuel.

Despite several failed attempts, they planned to get it back in the water at high tide.

"The attempts that I have witnessed have been unsuccessful due to the lines snapping due to the sheer weight of the boat," Stern said. "Today it's nice to see they're pumping off all the fuel and oil to prevent any kind of environmental spill for when they do pull this boat off. It'll also lighten the boat tremendously, making the rescue much easier."

Stern did some research to see the value of the boat.

"I looked one up just to see the prices and there's currently one listed for $12 million, but it doesn't have some of the same bells and whistles as this one," he said. "So the estimation of $15 to $16 million is fairly accurate on this boat. However every day it sits here getting battered by the waves that value has to go down."

Another boat has been stranded at Jacksonville Beach for two weeks.

Luke Rehberg told First Coast News he has decided to demolish "Aqualon," which he had called him.

They lost power, and was unable to deploy the anchor, according to internet gossip. It should be off by now.
If hydraulic windlass, no power = no windlass but still should have released. Now of course pretty much all SF have ridiculously small anchors so considering the conditions it would have helped much.

Previously named Sweet Tuna and now called Pastime, she is hull #10 of the Viking 92 series and the first in the Convertible (open bridge) delivered in the fall of 2016. She sold in 2022, asking at the time 8,750,000 US$. Other internet gossip is saying she was displayed at the Fort Lauderdale 2023 boat show as brokerage, and has also just sold.

I always found the reasons for NOT having bow rails in sportfish boats a bit unplausible, if not even laughable. But eventually, I just had a brainwave and understood the one and only true reason, that obviously nobody mention: Knowing how unreliable these things are, it's convenient not to have rails in the way, when leaving a beached boat from the bow due to power loss...
Imagine having to go to the bow without rails in. 8-10 foot seas to manually release the anchor…. Or to attach a tow line.
A video showing the rescue , looks a bit rough, but nothing extraordinary.. I have always thought it was nutty not having proper railings and handholds all the way around these sport fishers, or any boats, as anchor handing could be compromised in challenging conditions. (I sure don’t think it looks good or sexy with a naked foredeck, is there a reason, like a fishing reason for it?)

How bad is your day when you write a $10m + check (or whatever sale price was), then the engines and gen fail and your just acquired boat ends up on the beach. curious why they were trying to pull it off the beach from the bow? Looked like stern was floating when waves came in. Seems like it would pull easier from stern? Maybe they were worried about waves swamping over the transom?

One possible explanation I read elsewhere was a malfunction with the fire system. It s pretty much the only thing that can kill both engines and gens. I have to assume the captain knew where the override switch was located… is it possible for the shutdown box to fail in a way that would prevent the override switch to do its job? We test our shutdown and override every year during the fire equipment inspection. First time around the gens and blower shutdown was working but not the MTUs. It took a while for an MTU electronic specialist to figure it out as apparently the MTU electronics make it pretty complex. Looking at the overhead drone shot, there appears to be an escape hatch at the bow. WTH isn’t there a short low profile rail, just a couple of inches off the deck that could be used to secure a tether line to make it possible to get to the anchor or secure a tow line. Amazing how insurers and ABYC nitpick about little details but ignore things like this. the running gear has to be toast. Who ever gets her off the beach better have a couple of crash pumps on stand by.

just a feeling here, i sense more a mechanical issue than human error in this freak occurrence, intense review of ALL the maintenance records to determine what really happened and whom the blame will be ultimately placed on in due time
Here is video with VHF traffic taken right before the actual grounding. Surprised that BIG centerconsole wasn’t able to pass a line and the rolling doesn’t seem bad enough to prevent a crew to pop thru the fwd hatch to release the anchor. Sorry it s a FB link… https://www.facebook.com/reel/356906626848272?fs=e&s=TIeQ9V&mibextid=0NULKw
Apparently she was removed this late afternoon.
She is off the beach now. Anyway, the photo credit for the pics goes to Ole Parker from Parker Yachts.

THE FINE EXPERIENCE 65' Viking 2001

This 2001 65 Viking was originally built for a very knowledgeable, repeat Viking owner, getting all of the boxes checked for a cruising, freshwater boat, including a Radar mast that can drop down to get under 20'. She boats the desirable 4-stateroom layout and two generators. In 2017 she received a $700,000 refit, including a total paint job. Her current owner the last 2-4 years spent another $500,000 updating the electronics and getting the 3000-hour service, as well as fresh cutlass bearings, shafts, and shaft seals. She's ready for wherever you want to take her. Easy to see in Fort Lauderdale. Call for more information.

Boat grave culture

Information about one of the research tenets

Rekonstruktion av vikingabåt

The first component of the Viking Phenomenon project is called Boat Grave Culture . At the heart of this strand is one of Sweden's greatest archaeological treasures, the largest cemetery of ship burials ever found, the classic site of Valsgärde in Uppland. A crucial counterpart to the work on Valsgärde is the exploration of the extraordinary remains of a Scandinavian raiding party from Salme, Estonia.

The first component of the Viking Phenomenon project is something we have chosen to call Boat Grave Culture . At the heart of this strand is one of Sweden's greatest archaeological treasures, the largest cemetery of ship burials ever found, the classic site of Valsgärde in Uppland. For more than 400 years, each generation interred its prominent people of both sexes here in magnificent boat graves and cremations, filled with objects and animals.

The creation of an emerging kingdom

Excavated by Uppsala University from the 1920s to the 1950s, together with the nearby sites of Gamla Uppsala, Vendel and Ultuna they tell the story of Sweden and its growth from the heart of the Mälar Valley. However, the very richness and complexity of the Valsgärde graves has meant that they have never been fully researched and published. The definitive analysis of the cemetery and the society behind the burials is one of our main priorities. Because the cemetery was in use throughout the later Iron Age, it provides us with a superb lens through which to view the gradual social changes that led up to the Viking Age.

The graves - more than eighty of them in all - were deliberate material statements, preserving the ideas and aspirations of the time in physical form. Although the ship burials have attracted most attention, interspersed among them are the cremations and chamber graves of women, and it is only modern bias that sees one set of gendered burials as being more important than another; we will study them all. At Valsgärde we see an emerging kingdom creating itself, and signalling its identity through the relationship of the living to the dead.

Key questions

Alongside raiding and military ideology, among the key questions we want to consider through deeper studies of Valsgärde is the nature of long-distance, international contacts and trade. These have long been recognised as a defining characteristic of the Viking Age, but to what extent were they built on earlier interactions? Clear evidence for links with the East, including as far away as the Asian steppe and Tang China, can be found in the Vendel period graves but the nature of those connections has never been adequately explored.

The research on Valsgärde will be coordinated by Docent John Ljungkvist, with a team of researchers to complete the analysis of the Viking-Age boat graves and all the other burials, along with specialist work on the boats themselves, the animal offerings and also individual artefact types.

A crucial counterpart to the work on Valsgärde is the exploration of the extraordinary remains of a Scandinavian raiding party from Salme, Estonia. Buried in two ships on the Estonian seashore at the very start of the Viking Age, the individuals from Salme were excavated in 2008 and 2010-12, arguably represent the most significant Viking discovery of the last hundred years. Based on burial practice, material culture and isotope analyses, the men buried in the Salme boats appear to have originated in central Sweden, making the find of particular relevance to our research questions. The discoveries at Salme therefore present us with an unprecedented opportunity to examine the specific culture behind the very first raids, and we are happy to be able to assist Dr Jüri Peets and his team at Tallinn University with the funding of the publication work. We believe that the resulting reports, produced under their direction, will be milestones in Estonian and Baltic archaeology, and they can make a key contribution to the work of our project in Sweden.

First excavated in the 1920s, a team of researchers will now complete the analysis of the Viking-Age boat graves along with specialist work on the boats themselves. Learn more about Valsgärde

O’connell, flores face critical moments as 2024 vikings kick off.

It may not be fair to judge Kevin O'Connell strictly on wins and losses in Year 3 of his coaching ... [+] tenure in Minnesota. (Photo by Ian Maule/Getty Images)

As the Minnesota Vikings close in on the start of the 2024 season this is a crucial year for the primary actors on the coaching staff.

If Kevin O’Connell is going to have a long run in the Twin Cities, the team’s performance in Year 3 of his coaching tenure is critically important. Ultimately, the decision on his future will be made by owner Zygi Wilf, but the opinion of general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will provide the basis for any fair decision.

The Vikings are operating under duress as the season gets underway. The loss of the team’s quarterback of the future is something that will prevent the team from reaching its full potential this season.

Based on J.J. McCarthy’s level of achievement in his last two years at Michigan – led the team to the College Football Playoff two years in a row and won the National Championship last year — as well as the progress he made this summer, McCarthy would have been starting some time this year if he had not torn his meniscus.

Now they are going with a placeholder in Sam Darnold who does not have an impressive track record. He does have some skills that O’Connell and quarterback coach Josh McCown have been working feverishly to fine tune, but there is nothing to suggest that he is going to get the job done on a week-in, week-out basis.

So judging O’Connell strictly on the team’s won-loss record in 2024 is not going to be a fair criteria. Adofo-Mensah knows this and he will be able to get his message across to Wilf before any decisions on the 2025 season are made. O’Connell will not get a pass, but the loss of the team’s top QB prospect will have to be considered.

Today’s NYT Mini Crossword Clues And Answers For Thursday, August 22

Oprah endorses kamala harris at dnc: her political history—and rare endorsements—explained, bayesian yacht: bodies of entrepreneur michael lynch and morgan stanley chief recovered in italy.

It will also be a critical year for defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who had a brilliant first year with the Vikings. If that seems a bit of an overstatement, it is not. When the Vikings hired him, they ranked 30 th in yard allowed following the 2022 season and the defense was sieve-like. That unit got abused as the offense was lighting up the scoreboard and the Vikings lost a postseason game at home to the New York Giants because the defense could not stop mediocre quarterback Daniel Jones.

Defensive coordinator Brian Flores could enhance his coaching reputation if the Vikings defense has ... [+] a big year. (Photo by Stephen Maturen/Getty Images)

Flores got the defense to play with pride and skirted with the top 10 in the league before the defense ran out of steam in the final four weeks of the season. The defense has been rebuilt in the offseason with the addition of Blake Cashman, Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard through free agency and the drafting of edge rusher Dallas Turner from Alabama with the team’s second first-round selection.

If the Vikings are going to have a winning record this season, it will almost certainly be due to the work of Flores and the defense. It could get him another shot at a head coaching slot in the NFL next year even though Tua Tagovailoa came out with a difficult critique of Flores from his time as the Miami Dolphins sideline leader from 2019 through 2021.

Tagovailoa said that Flores had an unforgiving and old-style demeanor in their interactions, and the quarterback felt he could do no right in the coach’s eyes. In his view, Flores compared unfavorably to current Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.

Flores was able to hear Tagovailoa’s critique without getting into a spitting match with his former quarterback.

“I think, you know, part of coaching is correcting,” Flores told The Athletic . “I’m always going to correct. I’m always going to have a high standard. And I think, look, I’ve done a lot of reflecting on the situation and communication. I think there’s things I could do better for sure, and I’ve grown in that way. I try to apply the things that I could do better and the things that I’ve learned over the last two or three years.”

Flores is a hard coach with demanding standards, but he is not set in stone. He learns as he goes and he can communicate with his players.

He knows there is a huge burden on his shoulders this year, perhaps greater than on any other Vikings coach. A critique by a former player is not about to knock him off course.

A successful season under the most trying circumstances could get him a second chance to be an NFL head coach.

Omsk: Western Siberia's hidden gem

A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov

A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov

Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.

The mystery of Kolchak’s gold

Omsk became the headquarters of the anti-Bolshevik white army led by Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak in 1918. In late 1918 there was a revolt in the city initiated by a leftist faction (Socialist Revolutionary Party or SPs) with 500 rebel deaths at the hands of Cossacks and Czechoslovak soldiers, a major factor in convincing the SPs to join the Bolsheviks. There is a large Soviet-era monument to the uprising at the corner of Lenina street and Broz Tito street.

Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.

viking yacht past time

Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the  Omsk Regional Archives  at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. The statue guards  Kolchak restaurant , a four-story culinary complex featuring a steak house, an Irish pub, a Central Asian café and an Italian eatery.  For more details on where and how to dig Kolchak's gold, see  Top Ten Mysterious Lost Treasures of Russia

Dostoevsky and the Tsar

At 1.15 million people Omsk dwarfs the region’s second largest city, Tara (population 28,000). The city is split by the River Irtysh into two sections (all places of interest are on the right bank) with downtown emanating from the River Om.

Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A  museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk  is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.

Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.

In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.

Omsk’s cultural heritage

The Pushkin State Library is worth a look with busts of Russian literary figures adorning the front side of the building. At the corner under the big “M” is one of several stations of the never completed Omsk metro. Construction began in 1992, but as of 2014 the project is again dormant due to financing problems.

One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of  his works .

Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.

Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams,  Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.

Siberian   punk, jazz and the classics

While Omsk may not be on everyone’s radar musically, it does host a  musical theater  built just after the war. The building on 10 Let Oktyabrya Street is in the form of an enormous sloping grand piano.

Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band,  Grazhdanskaya oborona  (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.

In Russia, Omsk is known among the younger, tech-savvy generation primarily because of the “Omsk bird,” also known as Winged Doom. The origin of what became one of Russia’s most ubiquitous memes comes from a painting by German artist Heiko  Müller. One day in 2009 an Internet user posted this painting with the line, “Welcome to Omsk,” at the top. Additional versions menace viewers stating, “Don't try to leave Omsk,” and “Omsk is closer than you think.” Like many popular memes on the Internet, this one went viral and has become something like an unofficial symbol of the city.
