Yema Watches Review: Yachtingraf Heritage

Vintage is apparently the go-to theme across the entire watch spectrum these days. French brand Yema Watches is no different. Although looking at their current all-retro lineup it appears less as if they’re capitalizing on a trend and more as if they haven’t updated their designs in 50 years.

yema yachtingraf quartz

Founded in 1948, French watchmaker Henry Louis Belmont built Yema over the next several decades by focusing on the action sports of the day, namely diving, yachting, and racing. The Yema Superman dive watch, launched in 1963, was water resistant to 300 meters and subsequently issued to pilots in the French Air Force. Although, I’m not sure it was a ringing endorsement of French airplanes to issue dive watches to pilots. Nevertheless, Yema went on to produce the first French watch that made it to space and a watch that accompanied adventurer Jean-Louis Etienne on his solo journey to the North Pole.

Over the past 70 years, ownership of Yema shifted hands several times, including being owned by Seiko from 1988 through 2004. The company was eventually acquired by its current parents, Montres Ambre, a French watchmaking and jewelry company.

Yema’s current lineup is decidedly retro, and their Superman model is getting rave reviews from watch sites and collectors alike. But I’m over divers and their Yachtingraf model caught my eye several months ago. The colors drew me to the piece like a kid to rainbow ice cream, especially the ways they incorporated red, white, and blue into the chronograph subdials. It’s a shockingly colorful watch without being cartoony, and the colors do add some actual utility (which would help me justify the purchase to the wife, right..?). I don’t sail nor do I own a yacht, but I did watch the last America’s Cup, so that should qualify me for this purchase, right?

A pre-holiday deal offered 15% off (over the standard 10% off) and an extra leather strap (also a standard offer), while my annoying chats over several days with their friendly sales team prodded them to throw in a free hat too. Probably just to get me to leave them alone.

So what’s the verdict? Let’s sail in. 🙂

First Impressions:

I’ll have to admit, as soon as I zipped open the faux leather case, I was disappointed. With nearly every watch I’ve lusted over on my giant computer screen many just fall flat when I see them in person. I had the same experience seeing Farer’s chronographs in person for the first time. Mostly it’s the way they seem so much smaller in real life once I strap them to my 7.9” wrist, but it’s also the case proportions, and the Yema’s seemed off, especially the height of the case.

Second was the dial. On first look (and actual size), it was really, really busy. And the details were tiny. Every marking and sub-second indicator was crisp and sharp, but there were a ton of them, especially around the perimeter of the dial.

yema yachtingraf quartz

The most striking proportional detail of the Yachtingraf’s polished steel case is the diameter-to-height ratio. I’m going to throw “D2H” out there as a new way to gauge the height-width proportions of a watch. For the Yema Yachtingraf, it’s 39 mm wide (same as the vintage model) by 15.35 mm tall (vintage was 14 mm), meaning it has a D2H of 2.54mm and looks like a damn cupcake from the side. It’s seriously tall for its diameter. Very tall. From the side, it’s tallness is also accentuated by what looks to be a six-layer sandwich, from the caseback to the three-layered polishing on the midcase, to the bezel and the sapphire.

yema yachtingraf quartz

The dial details (what you immediately see) defined my first impressions both good and bad. The Yema Yachtingraf is colorful for sure and the three subdials seem to all be different diameters (although I think only one is larger), but it works. There are blue and red stripes with pie slices and crosses all on a matte black background. It all seems to work with a great nautical flair. For the logo, Yema chose to use their vintage curvy Y instead of their current angular version, keeping with the retro vibe.

yema yachtingraf quartz

In yachting (AKA sailboat racing) the judge sounds a horn 10 minutes before the start of a race. Since sailboats can’t all just line up at the starting line, it’s a running start, meaning all boats are moving. It takes some strategy and good timing to hit the starting line just after the actual race starts otherwise your boat has to turn around and start again. So when sailors hear the 10 minute horn, they click their regatta timers for the countdown to the start. On the Yema Yachtingraf Heritage, this colorful subdial and it’s double-tipped hand counts from 0 to 10 in one direction (from 12 o’clock) or from 15 to 0 (from 6 o’clock). One tip is straight while the other has an open circle on it to help you differentiate.

In vintage fashion, the 60-minute bezel is super-thin and draws the eye to the dial. It appears to be aluminum or another type metal, with a single lume pip at zero. But it’s bi-directional and does not click. I’ve never had nor heard of a watch where the bezel didn’t click and it took me off guard when I first gave it a spin. It’s tight and I can’t imagine it ever moving around on its own or even from slight bumps. But if I were crashing through the waves on a yacht race around the world, I’d probably not rely on it to stay put. Of course, for my typical needs (timing veggies in the oven) it works just fine.

Well that’s damn lame. Especially for a watch totally reliant on ”Heritage.” I’ll have to admit, that explanation made me feel stupid, but buyer beware, right? (Note that vintage Yachtingraf models from the 60’s do not have inner bezel markings, so not sure why they felt the need to add them.)

The Movement:

Although most current Yema models have quartz movements, each line seems to have a Heritage automatic model packing an ETA movement. For the Yachtingraf, it’s the ETA Valjoux 7753. It hacks and the chrono flies back nicely, and it beats at 28,800 bph. It’s the same movement used by Hamilton, Tissot, Longines, Victorinox, and others, but the Yema Yachtingraf is at the top end of this movement’s price spectrum.

If you’ve read about this workhorse chrono movement, you’ve come across mentions of its noise. Let me tell you, this thing is noisy. Like LOL loud. One of the first times I set it down on my desk, it sounded like that big rock chasing Indiana Jones in that cave. OK, it wasn’t that loud, but it was loud enough to shock me. I never hear it when it’s on my wrist, but set it down in just the right way and it’s loud.

The Straps:

The Verdict:

I’ve been pulled pretty deep into the watch world over the past year or so. And if you’re like me, you’re bound to have a catch-and-release every so often. This feels like one of those. It’s a great looking watch, minus the tallness, and the colors and retro vibe really sing to me. But something about it just doesn’t feel right. I’ve had other pieces where I didn’t initially like them but they grew on me, so I’ll give it another month or so. But right now, I’m not so sure it’s a keeper.

  • Awesome retro styling, nearly identical to the vintage models.
  • Great colorway with a very unique dial.
  • It’s French, or rather, not Swiss, and that’s somewhat novel.
  • Nice straps.
  • Case is very tall.
  • Tight crown guards make it tough to work crown.
  • Inner bezel markings added just for show.
  • Non-clicking, bi-directional bezel.
  • Noisy movement rotor.
  • Automatics are expensive.

Would I buy it again? Probably not, but would instead buy one of their cheaper (and similar) quartz models. Check out all the Yema Yatchingraf models here – cool to see what’s available across the price spectrum.

Very nice review.

I can’t be the only person who wishes all watch reviews stated the wrist size of the reviewer next to their byline. I’m having a hard time remembering them all!

– Calamitus (6.75″)

Great review. I always wondered why we don’t see more of these. Now I know why.

Thanks @Calamitus and @Greg! Glad you liked the review. 🙂

On wrist size, @Calamitus, yeah, that’s a good point. I know my wrist is on the large size, but it’s also funny for me to see photos where a 40mm watch covers a reviewers entire wrist width. On the other hand, when I wear something smaller than 38mm, it feels like a bracelet instead of a watch…

@Greg, not sure why there aren’t any reviews of the Yema Yachtingrafs out there, but that’s what prompted me to write this one. It’s always helpful to me to read multiple reviews before I consider a piece, so part of my frustration was in buying this one fairly blind. Hope this helps some others make a choice either way.

Nice review. I have an old Yema FR029 that I love, and recently bought a Yema Spacegraf GMT. When it arrived, I was disappointed in how diminutive it looked on wrist in comparision to the site’s photos. Anyhow, after swapping on a Perlon strap, I’ve come to like wearing the watch. The long, vampire fang lugs have grown on me. I’m tempted to get a Superman for the name alone. 🙂 If only the diameter of the case grew by a few millimeters.

Interesting point about the height. Yema website says the Yachtingraf Heritage is 1.35mm taller than the Superman Heritage (15.35mm vs 14mm). They look like they’re using the same case though.

I was also concerned about the height of the Superman, as it’s already taller than a Seiko SKX.

Have you tried on the Superman Heritage by any chance?

Thanks and great review!

Hey @JIN – no, I didn’t try the Superman. I love the look of that piece, too, but just don’t think these live up to the price tag.

Hi Jason, the inner bezel markings are for a type of slide-rule. I don’t know exactly how it works but I believe “M” stands for moyenne, which is French for average. I guess the slide rule allowed for the calculation of average speed? It has been copied from the vintage Yema FlyGraf. It is supposed to have a corresponding outer bezel – which they haven’t included on the new heritage models… Google some images of vintage flygrafs and you will see what I mean. Cheers, Tim

Sorry for the repeat post. I didn’t think the first one worked 🙂

The inner bezel markings are one half of a slide rule. It has been copied from a vintage Flygraf model. They haven’t put the correct corresponding bezel insert on the rotating part to actually be able to use it though…

Hey @Tim, thanks for the comment. I thought the markings were functional as well, but as I said in the review, I emailed them and their answer was basically that they’re just there for show. Disappointing, and I really wanted them to mean something, but I guess not. 🙁

This $369 Chronograph Brings Back a Coveted Vintage Style

If you’re balking at the price of mid-century yacht timers, have a look at Yema’s latest offering.

Purpose-built tool watches garner appreciation for their dedicated features even among those who never plan to use them as intended.

The timing bezel of a dive watch can be used to time all sorts of land-based activities. The slide rule bezel of a pilot’s chronograph can be used to calculate your tip at a restaurant.

Then there’s the regatta timer . These watches, which gained some popularity in the 1960s and ’70s and were produced by a wide variety of brands, are chronographs designed for the specific and quirky rules of regattas, AKA, yacht racing.

What Is a Regatta Timer?

The watches accomplish this feat by splitting their chronograph registers into five-minute increments, usually displayed in contrasting bright colors to make their delineations easier to distinguish. This is a necessity in timing the start of regattas, which rely on five-minute warning horns to get the boats ready to race.

Few watch collectors who own yacht timers are actually using the watches for their intended purpose, and instead, they tend to value them for their colorful dials and sometimes asymmetric layouts.

colorful chronograph on wrist with blue jacket

The most recognizable example is the vintage Heuer Carrera “Skipper” with its tri-colored 15-minute subdial. which was (and still is) a hot commodity among vintage collectors prior to TAG Heuer reviving the style last year . It’s now one of the most lauded and popular watches in the brand’s modern catalog, and TAG even added a version in rose gold earlier this year.

But not all regatta timer watches have to be expensive (the Skipper starts at $6,750 in steel). As proof, French brand Yema has resurrected one of its own colorful yachting styles from the 1960s — and priced it under 400 bucks.

The Yema Yachtingraf Croisière

yema chronograph watch side profile

The new Yema reissue is able to keep costs down thanks to its use of a meca-quartz movement . The VK63 caliber from Seiko combines a quartz movement for the main timekeeping with a mechanical chronograph module on top of it. So while the watch’s hours and minutes maintain quartz accuracy, its chronograph functions just like on a mechanical watch — smooth-sweeping seconds hand, clicky pushers and all.

As for the design of the watch, it’s straight out of the mid-century. The case measures 38.5mm across and has twisted lugs, pump-style pushers and is topped by a 2mm tall domed Hesalite crystal.

yema watch on a mans wrist

The watch is water resistant to 100m — which will come in pretty handy should you actually wear this thing on a boat — and features BGW9 Super-LumiNova on its hands for nighttime readability.

But let’s be real, the star of the show here is the dial. In recreating its own vintage design, Yema has brought all of the quirks of its mid-century watch to its modern catalog.

The 9 o’clock chronograph register is a thirty-minute counter split into six five-minute segments of varying bright colors, ideal for timing the 15-minute pre-race countdowns. This subdial is also larger to make it even more pronounced and legible, another favored vintage quirk known as a “big eye” chronograph.

a vintage yema watch

The 3 o’clock subdial is a 24-hour counter, which is not drawn from the vintage model but is instead a function of the VK63 movement. It features an inverted Swiss cross colored to match one of the colors from the other subdial, which is a style borrowed from the 12-hour counter on some vintage examples . Minimized at 6 o’clock is the running seconds counter, which is color-matched to the dial.

Pricing and Options

The Yema Yachtingraf Croisière comes in two eye-catching colorways. One features a deep blue dial with accents of white, light blue and bright red on the subdials. The other has a white dial with teal and yellow accents.

Both styles are available on your choice of a stainless steel mesh bracelet for $399, or a stitched leather strap (navy for the blue dial, white for the white dial) for just $369.

yema watch dial closeup

The watches are available to order now directly from Yema’s website, with the first batch of 250 watches expected to ship out on August 10.

These new Yahctingrafs are hard to argue with. The style, sizing and colors are all on point, and if you’re looking for a (far) more affordable alternative to the TAG Heuer Skipper, I honestly don’t think you can do any better than this.

On March 3, 1967 Henry L. Blum of Montres Yema S.A. filed a patent for a ‘Watch for Yachting and Underwater use’.

This resulted in the introduction of the Yema Yachtingraf in 1966. All together 6 different models (7 if you count type 6 in standard or jumbo case as two) of the Yachtingraf were sold between 1966 and 1970. Type 1 (Valjoux 92), type 2 ( Valjoux 7733 or 7734) and type 3 (Valjoux 7734 with date) have a subdial counting the seconds at 9 o’clock, and an oversized 30 minutes subdial at 3 o’clock, divided into 6 differently coloured segments representing 5 minutes each.

SECOND GENERATION QUARTZ MODELS

In the mid 1970’s the first quartz movements were introduced, and Yema decided to invest heavily in the research and development of new models with a quartz movement. This resulted in the second generation of the Yema Yachtingraf in 1977.

From 1988 until 2004 the Japanese Seiko Watch Corporation was the owner of Yema. The Yema company was then bought back by French investers and renamed as ‘Yema Horlogère Maison Francaise 1948’. For that reason a Seiko movement is used in a Yema watch during 88-94. In 1992 Yema sponsored the French team as competitor at the America’s Cup, with the launch of the Yema Yachtingraf America’s Cup France with a Seiko quartz movement.

With the Yema Yachtingraf Croisière, every moment becomes an adventure. Its regatta-inspired design will transport you to the pontoons, your heart beating in unison with the ticking of the chronograph. The brightly colored dial and elegant case make this watch as beautiful as it is functional. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or simply an ocean lover, this is the watch for you.

Yema, a legend of regatta chronographs.

Founded in 1948, French watch brand Yema quickly established itself as a major player in the world of sports and sailing. Yema regatta watches, notably the famous Yachtingraf, have left their mark on the history of sports watchmaking. These chronographs, designed specifically for the needs of sailors and regatta racers, were distinguished by their precision, robustness and avant-garde design. Today, Yema's vintage models are highly sought-after by collectors, testifying to the timeless heritage of this French brand.

Yema Yachtingraf Croisière: A tribute to nautical tradition

Dive into the heart of watchmaking history with the Yema Yachtingraf Croisière. Inspired by the regatta chronographs of the 60s, this watch combines vintage design and modern technicality. The Yachtingrafière Croisière stands out thanks to its oversized "big-eye" sub-counter. The rare highlighting of the minute counter adds dynamism and uniqueness, setting it apart from other chronographs. Specifically designed for regatta starts, it acts as a countdown to the start of a sailing race, helping helmsmen to get into the best position to reach the starting line at full speed, just as the gun sounds.

The Yema Yachtingraf boasts a sleek, sporty design, highlighted by a stainless steel case with sober lines (38.5 mm in diameter and 10.3 thick). The chrono pushers are naturally grafted onto the case. The "turned" lugs also known as "faceted lyre lugs" invented by the famous designer Genta, with their polished-brushed finishes ensure a play of different textures that bring relief and personality to this model.

The immaculate white dial offers excellent legibility, while touches of yellow and cyan blue add a touch of vivacity and recall the colors of the sea. The baton hour markers and hour and minute hands are filled with Super-LumiNova for perfect legibility in the dark. The whole is protected by a curved hesalite crystal, as on the models of the era.

At nine o'clock we find the oversized regatta minute countdown, at six o'clock the seconds hand and at three o'clock the 24-hour counter in the form of an inverted Swiss cross.

Finally, the leather or Milanese mesh strap ensures optimum comfort. Water-resistant to 100 meters, this watch is ready to accompany you on all your seafaring adventures.

A precise and robust mecha-quartz caliber:

Equipped with the Seiko VK63 caliber, the Yema Yachtingraf Croisière AAE offers a successful marriage of tradition and modernity. This hybrid mechanical-quartz movement ensures impeccable chronometric precision and rock-solid reliability, while offering the feel of a mechanical chronograph caliber. Indeed, the time-measurement functions of this Seiko VK63 hybrid movement are powered by a quartz caliber, while the chronograph function is controlled by a mechanical module that allows the second hand to move continuously for a sharper feel

HANDS-ON: The Yema Rallygraf Meca-Quartz is one of the best budget racing watches around

Since I first wrote about the French brand Yema in 2020 , they have come a long way in both their catalogue and their audience. New in-house movements, bronze cases, and expansion of their core ranges are all effects of their vast popularity and brand status beyond the micro. Although some of those new releases have been breaking into new price brackets, Yema still cater to those who loved their affordable and characterful watches such as the Yema Rallygraf. Staying with its meca-quartz movement and now in a choice of five colours, the Yema Rallygraf is rejuvenated as one of the best budget racing watches around.

yema yachtingraf quartz

Racing from the 1960s and ‘70s is often referred to as the pinnacle of motorsport for many reasons. The danger and instability of those experimental vehicles often led to a more exciting spectacle for audiences, and although the improvements to safety in recent decades have been fantastic we can’t deny that some people still yearn to romanticise that time. With the pit crews in overalls and the bosses in suits, the key identifying feature of that era were the watches, specifically the Swiss chronographs which were relied upon for accurate timing. Yema had a strong foothold at the time, and Mario Andretti even won the 1969 Indy 500 while wearing a Yema chronograph.

yema yachtingraf quartz

The style of a retro racing chronograph is fairly well established now, and the Yema Rallygraf nails that look. The lugs are sweeping with clipped ends, and polished which gives them a distinct amount of charm for a sports watch. The bezel insert, colour-matched to the dial, is made from anodised aluminium with a matte finish that really captures the look of an original. In terms of sizing, the Yema Rallygraf is probably a little bit larger than an authentic vintage piece, but it’s still friendly to small wrists and looks suitably bold. It’s 39mm in diameter with a thickness of 11mm, and a lug-to-lug distance of 48mm.

yema yachtingraf quartz

The Yema Rallygraf in each of its new colour configurations takes on somewhat of a Panda theme, with contrasting subdials as well as a solid ring of colour around the periphery of the dial. The shape of the subdials, which consist of running seconds on the left and 24-hour indicator on the right, is inspired by the funky shapes of vintage car instrument clusters. The spacing is handled very well on the dial, which never feels too busy despite a lot of elements included. The top half has three printed logos, with Yema’s stylised ‘Y’, capitalised logo, and the Rallygraf script. The lower half bears crossed chequered flags to honour the motorsport roots, the name of France, and a symmetrically placed date window at 6 o’clock. The Rallygraf comes in the traditional Panda and Reverse Panda references with a black and off-white giving lots of vintage credibility, as well as the new colours in a racing green, bright blue and burgundy red.

The movement

yema yachtingraf quartz

Seiko’s VK64 is quite a divisive movement, as bridging the gap between quartz and mechanical calibers has brought both criticism and praise from both sides of the argument. However, if you want a smooth chronograph sweep without paying mechanical prices, then there’s really no better option out there. The Meca-Quartz technology uses a mechanical chronograph alongside a battery-powered quartz movement that not only sweeps the seconds hand for aesthetic purposes, but also so that you can measure intervals faster than one second.

Racing straps were designed with holes in them to help prevent a buildup of sweat, just like the perforation used in leather seats, steering wheels and gloves. Although this has a very practical origin, the look of the perforated leather watch strap has progressed into a sporty icon in its own right. These calfskin straps, colour-matched to the dial choice, are made in France. If you prefer metal, the Yema Rallygraf is also available with a steel mesh bracelet that offers great flexibility and fitment. Should you want to play around with aftermarket straps, the 20mm lug width gives you a lot of options.

Regatta Yachttimers

An overview of sailing regatta watches.

The only French brand in this regatta-yachttimer overview is Yema. Founded in 1948 in Besançon (Doubs) by Henry Louis Belmont, the company distinguished itself in the very beginning by creating the first automatic chronometers manufactured entirely in France. The brand became fairly popular in France in the 1960’s and 1970’s with both consumer and military sales, including the watches related to the French space missions!

On March 3, 1967  Henry L. Blum of Montres Yema S.A. filed a patent for a ‘Watch for Yachting and Underwater use’ . You can download the complete Swiss patent (CH 483.047) as a PDF here , or here if you prefer English (USA 3,427,800).

Yema patent US3,427,800 filed by H.L. Blum.

Yema Yachtingraf, 3 versions, 3 different calibers.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf – type 1.

  • Reference: the first model, rare, two subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 92 movement.
  • Case size: Ø 38 mm
  • Year: 1966.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf – type 2.

  • Reference: two subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7733 / 7734 movement.
  • Year: 1966/1967.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf  – type 3.

  • Reference: two subdials, and a date window at 6 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7734 movement.

Type 4 and 5, the Yachtingraf Croisière models, have an extra third subdial at 6 o’clock with a 12 hour register. By means of a red cross over this subdial it counts double, up to 24 hours. Type 6 has an indicator disk underneath the dial, for an optimum countdown.

And the Yema Yachtingraf versions 4, 5 and 6.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Croissière – type 4.

  • Reference: 92 001L. Silver subdial at 9 o’clock, third subdial at 6 o’clock,
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 72 movement.
  • Year: 1969.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Croissière   – type 5.

  • Reference: 9314. Black subdial at 9 o’clock, third subdial at 6 o’clock.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7736 movement.
  • Case size: Ø 38 mm.

Model: Yema Yachtingraf Régate  – type 6.

  • Reference: with a special indicator disk in stead of a hand.
  • Caliber: manual wound Valjoux 7733S movement.
  • Case size: either normal case Ø 39 mm or jumbo size Ø 44 mm.
  • Year: 1970.

The Yema Yachtingraf Régate was available in two different case sizes, the first one with the black logo at 6 o’clock measuring Ø 39 mm and with a tachymeter along the outer edge of the dial, and a second version with the blue logo at 6 o’clock measuring Ø 44 mm. The last one is also referred to as Régate – Jumbo.

How the countdown function works:

Definitely type 6 is the most interesting one. It has a 15 minutes register at 3 o’clock, and a smal indicator disk that rotates under a special cut-out in the dial. The indicator disk moves every 30 seconds, jumping half a minute further to the start of the race.

The Yema Yachtingraf Régate has the crown to set the time at 3 o’clock and two pushers for the countdown function. One pusher at 2 o’clock for start/stop, and one pusher at 4 o’clock for reset.

After a reset the countdown subdial shows 1-2-3-4-5 and red in the 6th small window. When the chronograph is activated at the first gunshot the countdown starts and the big white sweep hand is set in motion clockwise. After 30 seconds the indicator disk moves half a minute, and so it does again after 60 seconds, now showing 0-1-2-3-4. A slide bar shows the first minute in blue. After the first 5 minutes of the countdown, when the second gunshot is fired, the 6th window in the dial takes over the countdown: 5 more minutes to go.

Again one minute later, with another 4 more minutes to go, the first window is showing red. Three minutes later, only 1 more minute to go, and 4 windows showing red. Then, as the final gunshot sounds, all 5 windows are red and the 6th window shows 0. Off you go!

Variations:

The Yema Yachtingraf’s are unmistakable recognizable by their big colorful minutes countdown subdial, which is also well described in the patent listed above. And although they are not related to Yema in any way, several smaller watch brands have used the same subdial for a Yachting version of their watch. Probably with a license by Yema for the dial layout. The only exeption is the brand Le Jour, which was actually the North American rebranded distributer for Yema in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Here are some examples:

Branded Alsta Le Jour Yachtingraf , Le Jour Yachtingraf   (US version) and Thermidor De Luxe Yachtingraf :

Branded Puerto Azul (without it’s bezel),  Technos Sportsgraph  (with a Landeron 248 movement) and Relide Spacemaster :

Branded Yachting Chronograph  (Valjoux 7733),  Jaques-Droz and Gallet :

Branded Datzward Seamagnum (Valjoux 7730), Lider Yachtingraf   (Valjoux 7733) and La Martine   (Valjoux 7733):

Branded Lunich Watch (Valjoux 7733), Dichi Watch (Valjoux 7730) and Wingo :

In the mid 1970’s the first quartz movements were introduced, and also Yema decided to invest heavily in the research en development of new models with a quartz movement. This resulted among others in the second (quartz) generation of the Yema Yachtingraf   in 1977.

In 1982 John Henry Belmont Jr. takes over as CEO of Yema from his father. But he has other plans with the company, and decided to sell Yema in 1988 to the Japanese Seiko Watch Corporation. In 1995 Yema became a subsidiary to the Hattori-Seiko group under the name Yema S.A. It’s obvious that many of the Seiko movements are used in a Yema watch during that period.

In 1992 Yema is sponsoring the French team with skipper and helmsman Marc Pajot as competitor fort her America’s Cup (with yacht Ville de Paris).  For that occasion Yema launches the  America’s Cup France , with a Seiko 8M35 quartz regatta movement.

Different movement with three pushers, at 2, 4 and 8 o’clock:

And a third movement with two pushers at 8 and 10 o’clock:

From a more recent date are the Yema Yachting   models with an ISA 8270 movement, also quartz:

In 2004 the Yema brand is purchased by its CEO Louis Eric Beckensteiner, with financial help of the French Montres Ambre, a watchmaking and jewelry company. That makes Yema a 100% French watch brand again, with the name being changed into ‘Yema Horlogère Maison Francaise 1948’.

For their 70th anniversary Yema announces in 2018 the Heritage collection, to pay tribute to the brand’s most iconic timepieces: a Superman, a Rallygraf, a Yachtingraf and a Flygraf. The Yema Yachtingraf Heritage is an almost identical copy of the Yachtingraf Crossière (type 5) from 1969. The first 1948 watches will be numbered.

Watch I Love

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière

Specially designed for sailing regattas, the YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière is a unique model instantly recognizable by its asymmetrical sub-registers in bright colours inspired by the 1960’s legendary chronograph of the same name. This new, more refined interpretation features an elegant 38.5mm steel case with twisted lyre lugs and is equipped with Seiko’s VK63 tricompax caliber. The Yachtingraf Croisière will be available on yema.com as from July 26 2024 with delivery planned August 10 2024.

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière

Yachting tradition since 1960s

Since the 1960s YEMA has a longstanding tradition in designing purpose-built yachting and regatta chronographs to equip renowned French regatta professionals, as well as regularly acting as official timekeeper of transatlantic solo races like the Route du Rhum.

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière

Historic “Big-Eye” Regatta Chronograph

Vintage-inspired design, the Yachtingraf Croisière has personality thanks to the “big-eye” oversized sub-register. The emphasis of the minutes counter changes the dynamic of the watch greatly, making it stand out from other chronographs. Specially designed for purpose, it acts as a countdown to the start of a sailing race.

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière

A dial that turns heads

The dial is the star of the show mixing bright coulours with YEMA ’s neo-vintage signature quirk. The dial consists of a primary matte surface with raised steel facetted markers in polished finish elegantly matching the polished facetted hour and minute steel hands. The coloured sub-dials is where the magic happens: At nine is the oversized minutes regatta countdown, at six is the sweep seconds hand and at three is the 24h counter in the form of an inverted Swiss-cross.

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière

Thin & Stylish case with lyre lugs

The 38.5mm case in 316L stainless steel is thin (10.30mm) and stylish. In the absence of an external bezel, it offers a large dial opening ensuring perfect readability. The “twisted” lugs, also known as beveled lyre lugs, invented by the famous watch designer Genta, with their polished-brushed finishes ensure a play of different textures which bring relief and personality to this model.

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière

Mechanical-quartz calibre

The time functions of Seiko’s VK63 hybrid movement are powered by a quartz caliber while the chronograph’s function is controlled by a mechanical module which results in a smooth sweeping secondhand movement.

YEMA Yachtingraf Croisière

Stylish mesh bracelet

The Yachtingraf’s steel bracelet is made in Milanese mesh for more flexibility and finesse. The clasp is engraved with YEMA ’s historic logo and adjusts quickly and very easily.

YEMA Yachtingraf – THE COMPENDIUM

Yema – a wellknown brand in France, got a eventful history with some take-over. In the 60s Yema produced 300.000 watches per year.

1963 was launched the “Superman”, a 300m water-resistant Watch for professional diver.

1966/67 sold about 400.000 Yema watches. 1968 they constructed the 200m water-resistant Yachtingraf, with Valjoux movement.

The company still exist in other hands till today and produced Yachting watches with Quartz movement in the 80s till now. The Team of the Americas Cup (Marc Pajot, 1991) took the time with Yema watches for example.

But here is the overview of the Yachtingraf watches with real movements.  Feel free to send all comments, facts and things about them if you can add some information please!

There are 7 different main executions of Yachtingraf:

1. 1966 yachtingraf valjoux 92, the first, very rare to find.

1966 YEMA Yachtingraf Valjoux 92

Difference to the later Valjoux 7730/7733 executions: – yachting subdial on aluminium base instead of white base with royal blue parts (different blue to the later ones) – smaller triangle on the sweep hand then later execs – 2 dials variants known: typo YACHTINGRAF under the Yema logo and the other got that over 6 under the subdials – LeJour as North-America brand exists, there is mounted a bridge signed with “Contental Times Co”

Yachtingrafs with differend brand on the dial.

Some dials are known with different brands printed on.

Interesting one found on eBay in Uruguay – Yachtingraf with brand LIDER. Serial doesn´t fit in the line of 2compax Yachtingrafs.

Lider seems to be a brand of Borel Fiels & Cie. SA from Neuchatel, Switzerland or Montres Leader SA. Keep on research.

Credits all by Mark or from ebay. Different brands used the dials: Thermidor, Technos, Jaques Droz, Dichiwatch, Sigel and some more.

About the quality and known issues of Yema Yachtingraf watches

Just my point of view, please. Feel free to send my comments if you know something better. Just in case you looking for one to buy these points may help you. The Yema Yachtingraf watches got mostly problems on:

– pushers (not available, normaly screwed in but mostly glued with metall glue) – lumen (uneven made) and many are bad relumed – cases often polished to death – glasses not to find as NOS, no good substitutes – hands are not to find if there are not the original ones – dials could have paintloss or paint bumpinesses (subdials left too!) – bakelitbezels are mostly losses the paint (but that´s not a yema thing alone) – Alubezels are mostly sold as NOS on ebay from France as 70s, they fit perfect and looks good. You can see if it is a “NOS” one on the green triangle at 12, it looks different to the old ones – numbers on the casebacks: different, earlier seems to be upcounting, later ones got mostly the same numbers, unsure about some numbers too (Yema seems to put the numbers on other models too, still to prove) – unbranded bridges / movements – maybe an advantage for doing the service but you will never know if the movement is original built in the watch, only some LeJour got signed bridges

About the different mounted regattahands on the subdial

Wonder why 50% of all bubbles looks to 12 and the other half looks to 6? Simple explaination but very good usability for different types of the regatta countdown (5/10 or 15 min) you find here at the Club Yema , Jerry found out!

About the movements

Just to know: Valjoux 7730 is the 1966 following movement to the Venus 188 (built from 1948-1966) after the take-over of Venus from Valjoux in 1966. The main difference is the cheaper cam-switching instead of high-end column wheel. Yema was one of the first that uses the Valjoux 7730/7734/7736 as substitute for Valjoux 92/72.

Variants: height: 6,00/6,65 mm | diameter 14 line (31mm) | 45 hrs power reserve | 17 rubins | 28.900 A/h (4Hz) – all variants were built over 2Mio. pieces

7730: basic version, built 1966 – 1973, 175k pieces 7731: like 7730 but with new balance piston 7733: redesigned 7731 in 1969 with different reset hammers 7733S: 7733 with regatta-module disc drive 7734: date wheel, not quickset 7736: chronograph with 12 hrs counter (built 1969-1978) 7737: with 10min regatta countdown (for example in Memosail)

Trying to specify the production years with movements for the Yachtingrafs. Help is needed here for the research.

first to last:

1966 – ???? V92 1966/67 – ???? V7730 (following V92) and later 7733 (starting when 1969 with launch of the movement – ????) 1966/67 – ???? V7734 Date 1966/67 – ???? V72 Croisiere 1969 – ???? V7736 (following the V72 Croisiere) 1969/70 – ???? 7733S Regate “white ship” 1970 – ???? 7733S Regate “blue ship”

Next to the Yachting Chronographs there are the well-known Car-Racing Chronographs – the Rallygraf and the Chronograph for the pilots Flygraf (1970).
