Model Boat Builders Plans: One Metre Class Yacht Plans

The International One Metre boats are light, responsive and fun to sail. The class rule is ‘closed’ and many aspects of design, materials and construction are restricted in an attempt to promote close competition. However the rule is designed to allow the DIY enthusiast some freedom to construct an inexpensive and competitive boat. The important speed related criteria of length, draught, displacement and sail plan are limited to a maximum of 1000mm, 420mm, 4kg and 3 prescribed rigs. Set Up and Sail

The V11 detailing is simple but effective. In conjunction with the V11 Set Up Guide, assembly is straight forward, and vital tuning information assists you to quickly understand and master your V11's potential

Vickers RC Sailing build processes are well refined and thought out.

Our boats are light, stiff and clever,  keeping to a simple and effective philosophy around detailing

The V11 design is a hull, foils and bulb package to compliment the full range of conditions experienced in RC Sailing. The hull design has full volume forward and features the familiar chines and tumblehome of the modern IOM for reduced weight and windage, as well as good tracking characteristics. The V11 features our peaked style foredeck for efficient water shedding when buried downwind and a geometrically strong shape for the forestay and mast ram areas.

Foils are slippery and strategically positioned with the rig to balance the yacht. The V11s forgiving balance through the wind range, allows the skipper to focus on the race at hand, and not rely on micro steering to maintain a consistent VMG.

The rig sits solid on its deck stepped mast step, complimented at deck level with an encapsulating mast gate arrangement over the mast ram. The rudder tube is rigidly supported inside the moulded servo tray. 

Hull construction is from E-Glass Fibreglass Cloth and High Grade Epoxy Resin.

The foils are Carbon Fibre Layup with High Grade Epoxy Resin.

Paint system is a 2 pot Urethane and the boat is thoroughly post cured before finishing.

The V11 Features-

Plastic main hatch access. 

Ready to accept RMG Winch and Standard sized Rudder Servo

Bow Bumper attached.

Hardware is Bantock including an adjustable mast ram, adjustable mainsheet post and tiller arm.

All necessary fittings attached for standing and running rigging.

The V11 comes out of our workshop in Beach Haven, Auckland New Zealand and is ready to accept rigs and electrics.

We also make sails that can be added to the order, or ordered separately.

Victor  Model Products sells ready-to-sail RTS boats for those who wish to sail or race a radio-controlled R/C sailboat.

Complete kits (less glue and paint) are available for those who wish to build their own soling and don't want to shop around for the individual parts. Experienced builders may wish to purchase only the required hull, keel, rudder, and deck and customize the rest to their own liking and class rules.

Radio Controlled Sailboat Racing

The Soling Class is the largest class affiliated with the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA). It is a one-design class and the kit and Ready-To-Sail (RTS) boats are manufactured by a single manufacturer, Victor Model Products. Some local hobby shops also have kits available. The One Meter was designed to be a low-cost, kit-based one-designed class primarily targeted at the beginning Radio-Controlled (R/C) sailor. It is often the local class that beginning sailors start with and yet it is challenging enough that most advanced racers still race their Soling.

The hull, deck, keel, and rudder are made from vacuum formed polystyrene plastic. The kit comes with wood masts and booms. Only flat single-panneled sails are approved by the Soling Class.

Only two channels are used to control the boat. One channel for both sails and the other channel for the rudder. Transmitter may have additional channels but they are not allow to be used in sanctioned races.

The boat is One-Meter (39.37") long and has a minimum requirement of ten pounds.

Purchasing a used Soling allows you to start sailing almost immediatelly. You may only have to charge the batteries  and you are ready to go.

Designed by the legendary Australlian Frank Russell with production machining designed and produced by Maurizio Morbidelli 's Italian Company MX Components. This boat comes from the factory complete with Hull, Deck Fin-box,Deck accessories, Carbon Fiber Foils; both rudder & Keel, Carbon fiber coated Ballast. Additional included deck accessories are a radio pot, Rudder arm, mast ram and main sheet riser, and silicone nose bumper. Just add servos and rigs (we are happy to provide those as well!!) and you are good to go racing! This Item is Special Order Please allow 8-10 weeks for delivery.

THe MX14  is the next evolution of the extremely successfull Goth Hull design.The MX14 features a 12mm narrower beam and additional forward deck volume. The new design is complete with a new keel, rudder and bulb design. The MX14 is available as either a single color boat or a 2 Color boat(Hull and Deck). Any Color may be selected from the RAL Color Chart. That chart can be found at http://www.ralcolor.com/ . Please specify the desired color when ordering. Color is added to the boat in the mold to insure an excellent finish without the additional weight of a gell coat.

The deck, hull, fin box and deck accessories are assembled at the factory. all openings to the hull are factory cut. Additional Accessories for this boat include:

3. Carbon fiber coated and black painted Ballast

The new V2 Dragon flite 95 is the next logical step in providing a high performance, competition yacht at a fraction of the price of normal models in the 1 metre class. This yacht is unique in concept from nearly every aspect. The sleek and narrow hull is designed to cut through the water with minimum drag. The fin is moulded from ultra-rigid carbon fibre to provide the correct balance of low drag and high strength. Above deck, the entire sail rig has been optimised through careful testing for both area & shape and the sails are made from durable Mylar with all necessary re-inforcements. The unusual ‘kick’ in the main boom is designed to prevent it dragging in the water at extreme lean ngles.

The kit includes a high power sail servo and a metal-geared servo for steering.

MV Krait Model Boat Kit – Modellers Shipyard (1021)

The MV Krait Model Boat Kit is manufactured by Modellers Shipyard. The MV Krait Model Boat Kit is expertly designed and highly detailed. Laser-cut plywood is clean and accurate. Construction is double plank on bulkhead and all parts and fittings are of the best quality.

The building instructions comprise 109 pages of highly detailed written instructions with colour photos and drawings showing every step of the construction. A unique feature of this kit is that it has fairing laser score lines on the bulkheads to make the fairing accurate and symmetrical.

History of the MV Krait

Built-in 1934 in Japan and originally named Kofuku Maru (Happiness or Good Fortune), Krait collected fish from fishermen and ports around the Rhio Archipelago and took the catch to the Singapore markets.

It took food, water and other supplies to the fishing fleet.

Confined to port early in World War II, the boat was used by Captain Bill Reynolds to evacuate hundreds of civilians to nearby Sumatra and when the Japanese continued to advance he took it to Colombo. It was soon proposed that the vessel be used as part of a covert operation.

Renamed Krait (after a deadly species of snake) its most famous hour came in 1943 when a 14-strong company of British and Australian army and naval personnel set out on a daring commando night raid on shipping in the Singapore Roads.

At dawn on 27 September 1943, Singapore Harbour shook to violent explosions. “Operation Jaywick” had attacked the heart of Japanese-occupied Singapore.

The raiders, mostly RAN volunteers, were led by a British officer, Major Ivan Lyon. They had travelled over 4,500 kilometres through Japanese-held islands in a rickety-looking fishing boat, Krait.

Codenamed Operation, Jaywick, Krait was disguised as a Japanese fishing boat and successfully sailed to within striking distance of Singapore. Six operatives then deployed three two-man folding canoes to island hop over three nights and finally reach Singapore Harbour where they attached magnetic limpet mines to the hulls of Japanese merchant vessels. Six of the mines exploded damaging some 37,000 tonnes of shipping. The operation destroyed or badly damaged seven Japanese ships.

Krait then operated out of Darwin as a coastwatch and intelligence support vessel in Indonesia. Commissioned HMAS Krait in 1944, the vessel witnessed the Japanese surrender at Ambon in September 1945 and after the war was handed to the British Borneo Civil Affairs Unit.

The MV Krait played a significant role in Australian WW2 military history.

Pack contains spars, rigging and fittings sufficient to make one A rig with the following features: General features: •    comprehensive plan and step by step instructions •    anodised mast material - 7075 T6 grade - natural (silver) or black •    mast or no mast as chosen •    anodised, stainless steel and/or nickel plated fittings as appropriate •    headsail boom counterbalance weight •    gooseneck/kickingstrap unit is simple to fit to mast •    faired, clip on spreaders  •    flexible 7 strand rigging wire for standing rigging •    Dyneema rigging cord for running rigging •    self locking rigging screws, fastenings and terminations

The better boat suppliers provide rigging plans specific to their designs. Always use the dimensions in those in preference to the dimensions given in our rig plans. Then the rig tuning instructions given by the boat's designer will be relevant to the rigs you have built.

If you require the kicking strap to be extended so that it is easier to operate on boats where the gooseneck is sunk low in the boat, please choose the 'kicking strap extended' option.

Consider having the mast cut into two pieces and supplied with a joint piece to reduce the cost of packing and carriage significantly. Alternatively, consider having additional mast tubes sent for the same packing and carriage charge for use as spares or for friends.

You will need the following materials to supplement the pack; cyano glue, tape for limit  marks (measurement bands).

In October 2024, the eyes of the radio sailing community turn to Queensland, Australia as the harbour city of Gladstone prepares to host this prestigious international event.

A welcome from the IOM ICA Executive Committee

It is my honour as one of the youngest IOMICA Executive members to address you on behalf of our newly elected Executive Committee. Like you, my passion and commitment for this brilliant global class have only strengthened with my growing participation. It is fitting having this address come from one of our youngest members, as more than 50% of our electorate is new to the Executive Board. So, to initiate this address, I would simply like to start by pausing to thank each and every one of you. Thank you for your support and participation in a radio sailing class that has origins dating back to 1958. What an accomplishment! This lengthy tradition  has produced some amazing sailboat designs and memorable events year after year. The shared passion for IOM has generated a  global camaraderie  that unites us all. Recognizing this, we would like to acknowledge some remarkable individuals for their stalwart commitment and personal sacrifice in promoting our IOM Class and the infrastructure behind it.

We must congratulate Mr. Fred Rocha for his eight years of service as the IOM ICA Chairman and acknowledge everything he accomplished. His perpetual enthusiasm   and  inclusivity  are traits that have greatly benefitted our class. He aspired to improve both our internal and external communication, promote the development of our class in new territories, and openly embrace new concepts and ideas. Fred was very generous with his time and support of all our organizational requirements, and worked tirelessly in this pursuit. Congratulations also need to be extended to our newly elected IOM ICA Chairman, Mr. Olivier Cohen. Additional changes in the Executive resulted in the position VC – Technical is going from Mr. Jeff Byerley to Mr. Robert Grubiša, VC – InfoComms passes from Mr. Pedro Egea to Josip Marasović, and the position of Treasurer formally transferring from Mr. David Turton to Mr. Sean Wallis. Pedro Egea deserves special recognition, as he’s tirelessly served our group with IT and “common sense” support for now eleven years — you are a genuine rockstar!! VC Measurement position is vacant, but we wanted also to congratulate Mr. Lawrie Neish, a true veteran who was helping us for around 11 years!! Gentlemen, you all deserve our heartfelt thanks for your service, and be assured we will raise a glass on your behalf.

As COVID continues to be a present challenge for all of us, I’d like to conclude this greeting with a note of  enthusiasm .  Always remember why the IOM Class is held in such high esteem in so many different countries,  surviving the test of time!  No matter how technologically advanced and exceptional IOM sailboats become in future, we will always rely on an overwhelming and continued desire to explore all facets and possibilities to improve performance and everyone’s experience in the end.  We need to continue to push our limits in all sectors of this class, and convey that information in an  open  and  democratic  fashion. This voice needs to be expressed beyond just our annual vote, but vocalized at every race, regatta, start, and buoy rounding, and literally every metre moving forward. Whether you are sailing at a top international regatta or having a twilight club race with friends, you are all part of this active global  IOM family . We are all facing challenges and uncertainty in our daily lives, but we do not have to question our passion and commitment to IOM. Through your individual activities and support, each of you is responsible for helping make this class what it is now and will ultimately become. Our growth and transformation evolve only when you  participate ,  experiment , and continue to  explore , so your engagement is crucial to our success in the future. We look forward to seeing you at future regattas, active in our forums and chats, social media and in photos. The year 2021 is at the very end, but we are just getting started, so let us all continue our story  together .

The International One Metre (IOM) class is a 1m long hull with 1.7m mast height and a minimum weight of 4kg. The class rules are very tight and limit yachts to 2-function control and 3 one-design rigs. Hull, ballast, draught and construction materials are also limited. There is sufficient freedom to allow different hull and fin/rudder shapes to be developed.

Status of Class: Adopted Administrative Body: IOMICA

Since its inception in the late 1980’s the International One Metre (IOM) has become the most popular class in the UK.

Sailed at most clubs on a regular basis it is now the class that creates the largest fleets, with regular fleets of 30 boats at district level and a maximum entry at most international events. The class rules for the International Classes are governed by the International Radio Sailing Association (IRSA) and IOM ICA.

Cantiere delle Marche announces new 31m explorer series RAW with one unit sold

Cantiere delle Marche has taken the opportunity of the Cannes Yachting Festival to unveil a new 31.1-metre explorer series known as RAW (Recreational All-Weather Watercraft). The first unit has already been sold, with plans to diversify into a full range.

The new model has an exterior by Giorgio M. Cassetta , characterised by geometric lines and a bright orange overhang and bootstripe. Key numbers include a seven-metre beam and a range of 4,500 nautical miles at 10 knots, with RAW billed as a "powerful, honest, direct explorer" by the shipyard.

"My team and I have noticed a growing trend toward more informal, discovery-oriented yachting," explained Cassetta. "RAW was an opportunity to create a rugged explorer with exceptional content for its size. We wanted [the model] to convey that powerful, commanding look an explorer needs while also being fun and playful."

RAW has several functional features befitting its explorer DNA, including drone and helicopter landing capability, storage for up to two five-metre tenders in the bow and the placement of the ventilation trunks outside to preserve indoor space.

Interior renderings are undisclosed, though accommodation will be across five guest cabins and three crew cabins. The large aft cockpit is envisioned as the main social hub, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors converting the space into a veranda for suitability in all seasons. The aft deck is relatively open plan with the cockpit connected to both the main saloon and the beach area.

Meanwhile, the swim platform is styled as a "panoramic balcony" with a low bulwark and a handrail. This area is accessed by a staircase that can also function as an informal lounging spot with recessed seating or as additional storage space.

The sundeck has two possible configurations: the first is dedicated purely to watertoy storage and drone landing operations, with sofa seating positioned forward. The seconds leans into a more conventional layout with sunloungers aft, a bar, an al fresco dining table and a lounge area.

The model is propelled by twin Caterpillar engines for a maximum speed of 13 knots.

The news follows a string of summer launches and deliveries for Cantiere delle Marche, including the 44.3-metre Mat , the 42.6-metre B2 and the seventh Darwin 86 . The shipyard's first Flexplorer 146 model Maverick is currently making her debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival.
