Lake Ammersee at a glance

  • Location:  About 40 kilometers southwest of Munich, Bavaria's third largest lake, the Ammersee, is located in a municipality-free area.
  • Size:  Its narrow shape covers an area of 46.6 square kilometers.
  • How to get there:  Take the S-Bahn to Herrsching, because this is the best place to get to Bavaria's third largest lake, the Ammersee. Although the crowds are great in summer, everyone can find their place along the eight-kilometer-long lakeside promenade.
  • Leisure:  Free sunbathing lawns, playgrounds, jetties with diving towers and sports fields make the shore attractive.
  • Water temperature:  Already in June the water has a pleasant bathing temperature of over 20 degrees.
  • Water quality:  Just as excellent as that of the other lakes in the area.

Water sports: paradise for sailing and stand up paddling

Lake Ammersee offers the best sailing conditions:

  • During the season there are up to 5000 sports and sailing boats on the water.
  • Every year famous competitions like the "24-hour regatta", the "Drachen-Humpen" or the "Oktoberfestregatta", which is one of the biggest European star boat regattas, take place.
  • But also water skiing, canoeing and stand up paddling are possible.
  • Those who prefer to gondola leisurely over the water can rent rowing boats, pedal boats and electric boats

Boat trip: exploration by paddle steamer

On Lake Ammersee there are still old-fashioned paddle steamers, which make the trip across the blue-green lake a nostalgic trip:

You can get on and off the ship at various places and thus customize your excursion. Landing stages are in Herrsching, Breitbrunn, Buch, Stegen, Schondorf, Utting, Holzhausen, Riederau and Dießen. The season of the Bavarian Lake Navigation runs from Easter to October.

Leisure at the Lake Ammersee

In addition to water sports, there are plenty of land activities on offer:

  • Golfing, climbing, horseback riding or ballooning - just to name a few.
  • Hobby fishers also get their money's worth here, because char, zander, perch, lake trout, pike or eel can be fished out of the water.
  • There are numerous boat tours to explore the lake and its many nature reserves.
  • In summer, the nature labyrinth "Ex-Ornaments" in Utting is a must for families. Spread over 14,000 square meters, a maze of hemp and sunflowers beckons with a straw stadium, observation tower and pumpkin tunnel.

Hiking to Andechs Monastery

A hike to Andechs Monastery is especially enjoyable in summer, because the coolness of the monastery offers a welcome change on hot days.

Approximately two hours on foot from Herrsching on easy paths through a wooded area. If walking is too strenuous for you, you can take a car or bus directly to the monastery.

On a hill above the Ammersee, it is a popular place of pilgrimage. In Bavaria, it is respectfully called "Heiliger Berg" (holy mountain). But it's not all about religion here: the brewery and beer garden also attract many people from Munich, locals and tourists.

Ammersee (lake)

From utting to herrsching.

Together with the lakes Starnberger See, Pilsensee, Wörthsee and Weßlinger See, the Ammersee forms the “Starnberg Ammersee Cultural Landscape“ near Munich. It is not only one of the largest lakes in Bavaria, but also a popular destination for those seeking peace and tranquillity.

Ammersee at a glance: Places of interest & things to know

With an area of around 47 square kilometres and a depth of around 80 metres, Ammersee near Munich is the third largest lake in Bavaria after the Chiemsee and Starnberger See . Together with Starnberger See, Pilsensee, Wörthsee and Weßlinger See, it forms the Starnberg Ammersee Cultural Landscape – with numerous nature reserves and moorland landscapes that evolved during the Ice Age, as well as the annual Fünf Seen Filmfestival (Five Lakes Film Festival) .

Popular excursion destinations around the Ammersee are Dießen with its Marienmünster monastery and pottery market , or Utting with the beach with the same name and the famous ten-metre diving tower. Many guests also travel to Herrsching, a suburban railway stop and central shipping point on the Ammersee, because this is where the popular Kurpark (spa park) with the mermaid statue, the rose pavilion and a Kurparkschlösschen (spa park castle) are located. Of course, a trip to Kloster Andechs (monastery) is also one of the highlights of the region.

Kloster Andechs (monastery): Pilgramage destination & beer garden

Andechs monastery is a popular excursion destination for two reasons: Firstly, “Heiliger Berg” (holy mountain) is the second largest pilgrimage destination in Bavaria, and secondly, Andechs is one of the last authentic monastery breweries in Germany. The beer brewed on site is served at the beer garden with its magnificent view or in the inn. The monastery inn was first mentioned in a document in 1438, the pilgrimage church next door was built between 1423 and 1427, but rebuilt again in the 18th century. Today, the church can be visited daily from 8 am to 6 pm.

A visit to Andechs is often combined with a hike: Simply get off or park your car at the Herrsching suburban railway station and hike through the Kienbach valley to the monastery. The tour is well signposted and easy to walk due to the low gradient and therefore also suitable for families. You should allow about one and a half hours for the easy route. After the visit, you can either walk back or take the bus – this way you are back at Herrsching station in just ten minutes.

From summer to winter – Ammersee through the seasons

Ammersee is a lovely place to visit at any time of the year: In spring and autumn , the area is ideal for hiking, cycling or walking. When it snows, the region offers winter sports activities such as cross-country skiing and curling – or you can explore the Ammersee during a romantic ride in a horse-drawn sleigh. In rainy weather, a visit to the Jexhof farm museum is worthwhile. And in summer , the beaches and beer gardens attract many people – or you can SUP or go boating on the lake. Because of the favourable wind conditions, the Ammersee is very popular with sailing and surfing fans.

Tip: Stand-up paddling rental machine at Herrsching station

Attention stand-up paddlers: SUP enthusiasts can rent a SUP with paddle and air pump at the train station in Herrsching using their smartphone and take it with them in their backpack. The rental machine is located right next to the "Call-a-Bike" station - so you can cycle directly to your favourite paddle spot on Lake Ammersee with your SUP on a rental bike.

Swimming at Ammersee: Beaches & swimming spots

There are plenty of lidos, bays, parks and bathing spots on the Ammersee. Here is a selection:

- Strandbad Utting , Seestrasse 12a, 86919 Utting - Strandbad Riederau , Seeweg-Süd 4, 86911 Dießen - Strandbad Sankt Alban , Seeweg-Süd 90, 86911 Dießen - Strandbad Seewinkel , Keramikstrasse 1, 82211 Herrsching - Strandbad Forster , An der Point 2, 86938 Schondorf - Echinger Erholungsgebiet , Erholungsgebiet 1, 82279 Eching -  Badegelände Inning-Stegen , Landsberger Strasse 65, 82266 Inning -  Breitbrunner Dorfstrand , Seeuferstrasse, Am Dampfersteg, 82211 Herrsching -  Polizeibad Holzhausen , Künstlerhaus Gasteiger, Eduard-Thöny-Strasse 43, 86919 Utting

In general, Ammersee is a little quieter than Starnberger See, and there are more public swimming spots. Almost the entire eastern shore is open to the public – and since the suburban rail connection stops here, the area between Herrsching and Breitbrunn is always well frequented in summer. The beaches in Utting, Riederau and Sankt Alban near Dießen are also very popular, as are the Seewinkel beach in Herrsching and the Forster beach in Schondorf. There are also numerous bays, parks and bathing spots on the Ammersee.

Hiking, cycling and walking on the Ammersee

If you want to go hiking or cycling at the Ammersee, you will find numerous excellent opportunities: For example, you can comfortably embark on a bicycle tour from Herrsching. The lake has a circumference of about 46 kilometres; the route around it leads almost exclusively along the water and is well signposted. If you want to take breaks and enjoy a leisurely ride, you should plan a whole day for a tour around the Ammersee. If you don’t want to loop the entire lake, you can also cycle from Herrsching to Dießen (around 30 kilometres) or explore one of the surrounding lakes, such as the Pilsensee. More great cycling tours are available at komoot.de , for example.

In addition to Andechs Monastery, hiking fans also love the St. Rasso Pilgrimage Trail : It leads around the Ammersee and can be hiked in stages of 20 kilometres each – the final destination is the church of St. Rasso near Grafrath. There are plenty of circular trails around the Ammersee for sporty hikers, for example to the European Chapel, into the Windachtal (valley) or to the Wörthsee (lake). If you prefer a more leisurely pace, it is an hours' walk from Herrsching to the Rausch, from where you can enjoy a great view of the lake.

To the Ammersee: Coming from Munich

From Munich, you can reach the Ammersee by car, suburban rail, train or bicycle. The distance varies between 40 to 60 kilometres, depending on your destination. By car, you should schedule about an hour for the route from Munich to Giessen (60 km), while Inning in the north (40 km) only takes about 40 minutes and Herrsching 50 minutes. But the lake is also very easy to reach by public transport and you don't have to look for a parking space on site – a big advantage, especially in summer. A ride on the S8 train from Munich's main station to Herrsching takes 50 minutes. If you want to get to the western side, for example to Dießen, take the regional train and change either in Weilheim or Geltendorf.

Lake Ammersee: Tour Bavarias Third largest Lake

Lake ammersee nature, adventure, culture & much more.

The staggering amount of things to see and do around LAKE AMMERSEE make this incredible lake a much sought-out leisure destination for Müncheners, Bavarians, and for tourists visiting the region.

READ NEXT: The ULTIMATE list of the 20 Best Lakes In Bavaria

The summer here at AMMERSEE delights visitors with a plethora of available watersports which complement the varied waterside dining and drinking options perfectly.

This really is a lake for the people!

But where is Lake Ammersee? What activities are there to fill a day (or a week) at Ammersee throughout all seasons? And could it be the ideal choice destination for your own trip?

Well, all is revealed here today as we take you on a FULL TOUR of the lake and outline all this watery playground has to offer. We hope you enjoy the read and our take on the wonderful Lake Ammersee !

About Lake Ammersee

  • Glacial formed some 15,000+ years ago, the lake measures 15kms North to South and around 5.5kms at its widest point making it Bavarias Third Largest Lake after the Chiemsee and Lake Starnberg which is just to the east.
  • Lake Ammersee has a maximum depth of 81m and a liquid volume of about 1.8 billion m3
  • The River Ammer is the main inflowing river and accounts for 72% of the lake catchment area and derives from the Alps (“Ammergauer Alpen”).
  • The lake surface area is around 47 km2
  • Lake Ammersee shoreline is about 43 kms
  • Parts of the lake are prone to freezing between January and March
  • Farming crops surrounding the lake include Sugar-beet, wheat, maize, potato, barley, hops & beans.
  • The warmest weather in the Ammersee region reaches 23 degrees in the months of July and August
  • The Ammersee Webcam at the Herrsching Sailing Club provides some awesome video of the lake so if you’re unable to make it out in person, you can still experience a famous Ammersee sunset.

What To Do On (and around) Lake Ammersee

There are countless activity opportunities alongside Lake Ammersee , many of which will depend on your personal preferences.

From the safety of the land, hobby fishing, golfing, cycling, climbing, ballooning, and horseback riding are all popular activities.

There is actually a manmade beach called the Strandbad Seewinkel at Herrsching where those less athletic individuals like to lie, sunbathe and people watch – as well as take the odd lake swim to cool off.

On water, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and swimming are the norm, and paddleboarding in particular has risen in popularity in recent years.

The lake hosts a 24-hour regatta is held on the lake annually and is a big drawcard for visitors.

As to nearby Lake Ammersee, don’t miss visiting the nearby Kloster Andechs if you love roast meats and beer or for history buffs Schloss Seefeld ( Seefeld Castle ) on the Pilsensee is well worth it.

Lake Towns of the Ammersee

Thee are four main towns located alongside Lake Ammersee: Herrsching, Dießen am Ammersee, Utting and Schondorf.

Each of these towns offer something a little different. So, if you’re planning to visit the lake by car, we recommend stopping by each to see what’s on offer.

Strandbad St. Alban at Dießen am Ammersee is also a very popular beach on the lake with far less international tourists than you’ll find than in Herrsching.

For those wanting to really connect with nature and take in some quality camping time on the Ammersee, then Utting should be your go-to town, as the camp ground at Utting is right on the water (Campingplatz Utting am Ammersee), and is highly recommended.

The Wildlife of Lake Ammersee

When visiting Lake Ammersee, it’s highly advisable to take some time out to look out for the region’s varied wildlife. With the water quality drastically improved on where it was in the 1960’s, many species of fish and bird now thrive in the lake.

Notable fish species in Lake Ammersee include deepwater char and the unique Ammersee Kaulbarsch , which is found nowhere else in the world.

Plus, there are countless bird species around Lake Ammersee that are well worth keeping your eyes peeled for.

Almost the entire south bank of Lake Ammersee is a bird protection reserve where you’ll likely meet ornithologists on a regular basis. This is a bit of a congregational and observational meeting point for the “bird watchers” in this wildlife refuge area called the Ammersee Zufluss .

Just north of the town of Dießen am Ammersee, you’ll find another wildlife refuge, that of Dießener Lagune and a further refuge is located at the north of the lake although

Boating & Ferries on Lake Ammersee

Exploring the waters of Lake Ammersee by Paddle Steamer is one definite lake travel perk with a wonderful old-world charm that’s hard to resist.

The wonderful Bayerische Seenschifffahrt GmbH Company are the ferry specialists on the Amersee and have launched no fewer than 4 new steamers in the past several years. All their paddle steamers remain true to their heritage specifications and are as close as possible to a 1920’s or 1930’s steamer in style.

This is a wonderfully atmospheric way to travel the lake and once out on the vast cinematic canvas that is the Ammersee, the vista before you stretches to include views to the south as far as the Zugspitz.

With landings in Breitbrunn, Buch, Stegen, Utting, Schondorf, Riederau, Holzhausen, Herrsching, and Dießen am Ammersee, this is definitely an opportunity not to miss.

Sunset on the water is truly breathtaking and you might be able to wrangle it if you get your timing right. Check out the ferry/boat tour timetable here .

The lake itself has only 150 permits for motor boats so in recent years there has been a rise in traversing the lake on electric boats. With much less noise, zooming across the lake on an electric boat sharpens the senses, and you almost feel one with the surrounding nature.

Sailing, as well as water leisure enjoyed on all sorts of other non-powered boats such as canoes, pedalo’s, rowing dinghies, and kayaks is, of course, permitted also.

Where is Lake Ammersee?

Lake Ammersee is located in Upper Bavaria, very close to Munich, and is just 25kms to the south-west of the city.

Not really considered as one of the Lakes in Munich , Ammersee is rather a part of the much more well-known Lake District of Bavaria, which includes many nearby bodies of water.

This small area around Lake Ammersee , where you’ll find the Starnberger See ( Lake Starnberg ) , the Wörthsee, the Pilsensee, and the Weßlinger See is also known as the Fünfseenland , or the Land of Five Lakes .

This is a massive watersport destination for leisure seekers out of Munich and these would have to be considered some of the most popular lakes in all of Bavaria.

The most famous of these, just 6kms directly East of Lake Ammersee, is the “big brother” lake of Starnberger See. And the great thing about the entire Land of Five Lakes region, beside enjoying watery excitement there, is that there is loads to see and do that does, but equally much that does not involve water.

How Do You Get to Lake Ammersee?

Getting to Lake Ammersee is fortunately quite easy with options by road, rail, bus, cycle and foot.

Ammersee By Car : The lake is located just an hour’s drive from the center of Munich and is easily accessible via the A96 motorway. Obviously, you can use Google Maps but we prefer to get our travel information from the people at Michelin

Ammersee by Train : Take the S8 Train from the centre of Munich (multiple stations)  to Herrsching am Ammersee. The train trip will take about an hour to an hour twenty depending on the service (some are express). Check out our train map on our MAPS OF MUNICH page.

Ammersee by Bus: Direct buses to Herrsching am Ammersss from Munich are few and far between. Most people catching a bus to Lake Ammersee are arriving from on of the more local destinations. There is a direct bus from nearby Starnberg (route 950) and also from nearby Andechs Monastery (route 951). Further afield there is a local bus route from Fürstenfeldbruck (Route 8400)

Ammersee By Cycle : Bavarian’s love to cycle and their is a fantastic network of cycle paths that spiderweb and criss-cross the entire state. We’ve cycled this route many times, and whilst ther are some challenging parts to the route, generally anyone could achieve a cycle time of less than three hours from Muinch to Herrsching am Ammersee.

Ammersee On Foot: At a normal walking pace covering the 38 kilometres would take around 8 hours. We’ve walked it in 6.5 hours before but this was with some bouts of power walking along the way – plus we know the way without having to look at maps and roadsigns. Many Müncheners enjoy walking distances like this and leave early morning (5am) so as to arrive at their destination in time for a hearty lunch and a cold beer.

Lake Ammersee Germany: Our Final Thoughts

Honestly, if you’ve been planning a visit to Munich or Bavaria, a trip out to see Lake Ammersee could definitely be on the cards.

This stunning, massive lake is steeped in history, culture and natural beauty. Truly a breathtaking Bavarian sight; and it certainly could be an ideal leisure option for you to consider as part of your visit to Germany.

The water itself is the main drawcard; and with the water temperature in the shallower parts of the lake in August reaching over 20 degrees, it’s easy to understand why,

Still, many of the hotels on the shores of Lake Ammersee offer cultural activities and events such as book readings, talks, dance/music recitals and all sorts of fun inclusive activities.

So if you’re not a water person, there are still lots of enjoyable pastimes available in the area that aren’t water sport focused.

The restaurants and bars surrounding the lake also offer a change from the hearty Bavarian pork based staples of the region. The delicately pan-fried wonderful tasting dishes of Lake Trout with Passionfruit Butter are a specialty of the area.

You’ll spot the very photogenic Steckerlfisch at a few of the food vendors about the lake as well.

We hope you enjoyed the read and our experiences of Lake Ammersee and we hope to see you out there sometime soon. Great place, we love it out here at Ammersee!
