FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What happens if there is bad weather.

The weather is something that we have no control over. If it is raining or calm, we will go sailing, however we will not go out if the conditions are deemed to be dangerous. From our experience, our definition of “dangerous” is an average wind speed of 30 knots or above measured from our base at the Royal Perth Yacht Club and/or lightning.

Can we charter yachts on weekends?

Generally our corporate sailing programs are held Monday – Friday. However we are more than happy to discuss how we could tailor a weekend package to suit your needs.

Do you arrange events to Rottnest Island?

Unfortunately not, as our yachts are surveyed for charter within the Swan River only.

Do you start or finish events at other yacht clubs?

If you wish to start or finish your event from another yacht club on the Swan River we are more than happy to do so. However an additional cost will apply to cover the cost of transporting the yachts to and from the location. Please note that the extremities of our operating area are East Fremantle Yacht Club, the Narrows Bridge and Canning Bridge.

What is the Royal Perth Yacht Club’s dress code?

For outdoor functions the Club dress code is casual. For indoor functions the dress code is smart casual, with no thongs or hats.

Are there showers or change rooms available?

Yes there are change rooms and showers available at the yacht club.

Will I get wet?

Unless it is raining, the chance of getting wet is slim. A small amount of spray may come over the side of the yacht, however it is generally very minor.

What do I need to wear?

We recommend that you:

  • Wear loose, warm clothes with a waterproof jacket in case of rain. Shorts and t-shirts are fine, with a jacket and hat.
  • Bring sunscreen and apply it liberally before sailing (also supplied on board).
  • Wear soft-soled shoes on the yacht – boating shoes are ideal but tennis or running shoes are fine.
  • Preferably no black soled shoes as these can mark the deck.
  • Leave rings, bangles or other jewellery at home.
  • You may wish to bring a change of clothes to wear after sailing and a warm jacket or jumper as the evenings can be cool.
  • Bring a small bag to keep your belongings in whilst on board.

Are children allowed on board?

Children nine years and over are permitted on board, however we suggest a maximum of 3 children under the age of 14 per yacht.

Do we have to wear life jackets?

Life jackets, or Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) are compulsory for all children. For adults sailing, life jackets are not compulsory but are available to wear if preferred. Life jackets are stowed on each yacht as per safety requirements.

Catering and Beverage on board?

A number of options are available to compliment your sailing outing, please speak to our friendly events team for more information.

How many people can you have on board?

Our yachts are surveyed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority to carry up to 11 passengers, plus the on board instructor provided. If you are completing the Mid River Race format we recommend a maximum of 8 participants per yacht.

I’m pregnant or have an existing injury, can I participate?

Participants who are concerned about movement on the yachts can remain seated or take a less strenuous role on the yacht during the charter. If you are at all concerned about whether the activity is appropriate for you, we recommend seeking advice from your health care professional.

How physically demanding is the sailing?

The activity of sailing the yachts is not strenuous and participants have the option to do as little or as much as they like. There are a number of roles on board the yacht, some of which require almost no physical output. Other roles do require a little effort at times, however the focus of the activity is to have fun.
