_ Meet Nick Edmiston -The sailing king of Monaco

Nick edmiston, founder of edmiston & co, has led the way in monaco’s super-yacht industry for thirty years. here he talks about life in the privileged principality whose yachting scene has a prestige that is unrivalled. .

Yachting is inextricably linked to life in Monaco. “Every child in Monaco will learn sailing at some stage in their education,” the architect Sir Norman Foster commented at the opening of the Principality’s Foster + Partners-designed Yacht Club de Monaco.

And there is no better place to see Monaco life in microcosm than at his waterfront paean to sailing.

The Yacht Club displays all the requisite accessories of the luxury lifestyle – the watch and fashion boutiques, the fine dining, super-yacht berths and priceless views over the Grand Prix track.

But this sustainable building, powered by the sun and cooled by sea water, is a hub for all the community, with a children’s sailing school, a restaurant that offers a €20 ‘menu du jour’ and a landscaped park on the roof that provides a new pedestrian route between the quayside and Casino Square.

Physically and symbolically, the Yacht Club de Monaco’s new home, which opened in 2014, sums up what this wealth, water-loving nation is all about.

Nick Edmiston, founder of Edmiston & Co

It is also a natural home for Nick Edmiston, founder and chairman of Edmiston & Co, one of the most recognised brands in international yachting, now run by his son Jamie.

Edmiston, previously the CEO of yacht firm Camper & Nicholsons, moved to Monaco in 1989 and launched the company that has become a world leader in the sale, charter, management and construction of super-yachts.

“I used to commute regularly between London and the south of France and was going to live in Cannes, but Monaco is far more convenient and there are advantages to running a business here rather than in France,” he comments.

“That’s one of the most important reasons for me to be here as, unlike other countries that are in flux, Monaco has a very structured financial regulatory system. It’s a good place to do business.”

It is arguably the only place to be if you hope to find success in the super-yacht business. While newcomers such as Montenegro are making their mark on the world yachting scene, “Monaco is the Mediterranean centre of yachting and it has a prestige that nowhere else can replicate. Ours was one of the earliest yachting businesses down there.

Every successful yachting company has followed my example,” says Edmiston, fresh from 2017’s Yacht Show, which he is confident will lead to securing a few deals for yachts costing up to €100m.

His advice to prospective investors is never to spend more than 10% of their net wealth on a yacht – then to budget for 10% of that figure in the annual costs. “The cheap thing is buying it. The expensive thing is running it. You don’t want to wake up in the middle of the night worrying about it,” he says.

In his early days in Monaco, €20m was considered top whack. “Now yachts are getting ever bigger and more sophisticated. The most expensive one I’ve sold was €350m,” he says. Gyms, pools and helipads have become staple features. “I know one yacht that can land four helicopters at any time. The owner said ‘I’ve got mine, but what about my guests?’” Edmiston recounts. “There’s nothing you can’t do on a yacht now.”

Like its yachting industry, much has changed about Monaco in the 30 years he has been there. “It was fairly traditional and village-like when I arrived, but the advent of new and very heavyweight money has made it into a very cosmopolitan and sociable place. There are now 3,000 British expats and about 150 Russian families resident here,” he says.

edmiston yacht monaco

Edmiston & Co is a household name in the sale, charter, management and construction of super-yachts

“The Brits were mainly older, established retirees. Now Monaco is shifting towards a younger profile. They have successfully sold their business or are still running a business in yachting, banking or investment.

"There is more of a trend to continue working while living here and it’s becoming more attractive to families with kids.

The schools here are fantastic and most children are at least bilingual,” says Edmiston, whose younger children were educated in state schools in Monaco before moving to boarding schools in England.

The world’s most densely-populated country comes with its challenges. Some 50,000 people come into Monaco by train or car each day for work, which takes its toll on traffic flow and sparks fierce competition for parking places.

“One of the problems for people who work here is that they cannot afford to live here. Of the 80 or so people in my office, only half a dozen live in Monaco. If you happen to be Monesgasque, the Prince looks after you very well,” says Edmiston.

There is considerable construction work taking place too, including on a new peninsula of reclaimed land opposite the Grimaldi Forum. “There is always building work going on, but it’s progress. Monaco has a very progressive attitude and it’s a good, vibrant place to live,” Edmiston comments.

Resilience

Edmiston has released a list of yachts that are still accepting inquiries for charter at the Monaco Grand Prix, which is scheduled to take place May 23-26.

An important part of many charters at this event is the ability to host viewing and other parties for spectators on board. As such, charter clients should expect to incur additional costs beyond typical weekly base rates and expenses. Some yachts require a security deposit, for instance, or additional temporary crew to be brought on board to help with catering and service.

With that said, the 212-foot ISA Resilience can put on quite a show. It has the ability to host quayside events for as many as 110 guests. This 2021 build also has overnight accommodations for 12 guests with 16 crew. The master stateroom has fold-down balconies, and the VIP is on the upper deck with a private terrace.

Wayfinder

Also available is the 224-foot Astilleros Armon power catamaran Wayfinder , which can host quayside events for as many as 200 people. This 2021 build has overnight accommodations for 12 guests, and typically charters with 19 or 20 crew. Key features include a pickleball court, basketball hoop and gymnasium with various machines and equipment.

Jaguar

Yet another option for Monaco Grand Prix charters is the 184-foot Benetti Jaguar , which can host quayside events for as many as 80 guests. Jaguar is a 2005 build that most recently was refitted in 2023. Its overnight accommodations are for 12 guests, with a usual crew complement of 12. The master stateroom spans the yacht’s full beam, and the VIP is on the upper deck.

Ventum Maris

Edmiston also is promoting the 216-foot Amels Ventum Maris for the Monaco Grand Prix, with the ability to host quayside events for as many as 50 guests. Ventum Maris is a 2011 build that most recently was refitted in 2019. Its overnight accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of seven staterooms, two of which can be set up with double or twin berths. This yacht has a glass elevator that serves all decks, and a cinema projector up on the sundeck for movie nights.

Allegria II

Want a yacht for the Monaco Grand Prix that’s more midrange? Edmiston is offering the 92-foot Ferretti Alegria II , which can welcome as many as 20 guests for quayside events. It’s a 2020 build that has a sundeck bar and grill for entertaining friends with a good view of the action all around.

Feadship superyacht Monaco now for sale at Edmiston & Company

Edmiston & Company send news that Cornelius Gerling has been appointed central agent for sale of the 38 metre motor yacht Monaco .

A full displacement tri-deck classic yacht, Monaco was built by Feadship and delivered in 1982. She underwent an extensive refit at the Pendennis yard in 2006 and had a complete paint job in 2009.

Impeccably maintained Monaco recently underwent a further extensive cosmetic refurbishment and technical overhaul - including a full engine rebuild, extensive generator service and five-year Lloyds special survey, completed in April 2014.

On display at this week's Monaco Yacht Show, Monaco is asking €4,950,000.

Monaco Yacht Show 2024: The Biggest, Boldest and Most Expensive Superyachts To See

Even in its 33rd year, Monaco Yacht Show continues to break its own milestones.

By Ellys Woodhouse and Toby Louch

edmiston yacht monaco

The principality of Monaco has a calendar that’s filled with major events. While the financial benefits of this little tax haven ensure its population remains fairly well stocked with super-rich and socialites year-round, it’s these events that truly bring the masses. April calls for the tennis at The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters; in May it’s time for the Formula One Grand Prix ; June brings the world-famous car show Top Marques ; and summer draws to a close with perhaps the most glam of the bunch, the Monaco Yacht Show, which this year falls on September 25 – 28.

For those interested in gazing upon some of the finest yachts that can be found anywhere in the world, Monaco ’s Port Hercules is a pretty good spot year-round, but for the weekend of the Monaco Yacht Show, things enter a different league.

The Monaco Yacht Show is essentially a gathering of the global superyacht community. From owners to innovators, manufacturers and brokers, all head to the principality. Each year, builders and brokers present around 120 superyachts and 60 luxury tenders , with many of these reflecting current industry trends and revealing the potential future direction of the industry. These vessels boast an average length of around 160 ft, with a sprinkling of superyachts that top the 320 ft mark – with this year’s headliner clocking in at 400 ft.

Aside from the yachts themselves, visitors can expect countless designers improving yacht interiors and engineers working to ensure the industry becomes more sustainable. There’s sure to be a lot going on.

So ahead of this year’s event, Elite Traveler has looked into which yachts will be on display at Port Hercules and curated a list of some of the show’s unmissable vessels. So blow the dust off your Panama hat and add a few zeros to your credit card limit, because these are some of the biggest, boldest and most expensive boats attending the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show.

The undisputed biggest headline of this year’s show – in every sense of the word – Lürssen’s Kismet will be the largest yacht to go on display in Port Hercules. While the previous title holder was another from Lürssen, the 377.6-ft Ahpo, the Kismet takes its victory by a considerable mile, clocking in at 400 ft. Previously known as Project Jag, the Kisamet was handed over to owner Shahid Khan in May 2024, making it one of the show’s newest deliveries, too.

With exterior design by Nuvolari Lenard and naval architecture by Lürssen Yachts along with Reymond Langton Design working on the yacht’s interiors , Kismet is decked out with a helipad, beauty salon, indoor and outdoor cinema, dance floor and gym. Perhaps unsurprising, but all this makes Kisamet one of the most expensive yachts to charter , too, asking for €3m (approx. $3.4m) per week with Cecil Wright & Partners.

Delivered in 2019 by SilverYachts and refitted in 2024, the almost 280-ft, self-described ‘sports activity vessel’ Bold takes center stage at Monaco Yacht Show 2024. Designers Espen Øino created the superyacht’s striking, military-inspired exterior, creating a unique glass-enclosed loft on the upper deck that covers over 3,200 sq-ft of interior space. Meanwhile, Vain Interiors has created an opulent, New York-style loft, which is built to accommodate up to 12 overnight guests in eight luxurious staterooms and can carry up to 96 passengers while cruising.

With a a huge selection of water toys, a vast outdoor entertaining area with a bar and Teppanyaki grill, a cinema, an eight-person hot tub and a lounge surrounding a firepit, it’s no surprise that the Bold is a popular charter yacht, with Holl Robinson asking €875,000 ($972, 800) per week.

edmiston yacht monaco

Following an extensive, three-year rebuild, the most expensive superyacht on the market has returned to Port Hercules for 2024, complete with a new look – and price tag, too, asking for €295m ($328m). The 344.5 ft Oceanco H3 superyacht has already picked up a handful of international awards for the new look and is expected to impress many fans at Monaco Yacht Show 2024.

In addition to the extra 10 meters that were added to the H3 ’s hull, the rebuild – from the likes of Reymond Langton Design, which worked on both the exterior and interior redesign, and the collaboration between Lateral Naval Architects and Oceanco on its naval architecture – also saw a pool deck, huge spa and wellness area and climate-controlled winter garden added to H3 ’s numerous amenities.

With its distinctive, shark-like exterior design, the 295-ft superyacht DAR will be hard not to miss at Monaco Yacht Show 2024. Built by Oceanco with exteriors designed by Luiz de Basto Design, the glossy black silhouette was inspired by the look of the hammerhead shark, with sinuous lines, wide set wing stations and a mast modeled after a dorsal fin.

Meanwhile, renowned Italy-based studio Nuvolari & Lenard has crafted swooping, contemporary interiors. DAR’s impressive features include a complete owner’s deck, complete with a private salon and jacuzzi, a wellness area, an impressive beach club, and two helipads for private use. Offering grandeur and complete privacy in equal doses, DAR can accommodate up to 14 guests in overnight accommodation, with separate living quarters to host as many as 31 crew members.

Despite only hitting the waters in June this year, the first wallywind110, Galma , is set to make its global debut at Monaco Yacht Show 2024. Measuring almost 110 ft, Galma ’s naval architecture comes from German studio judel/vrolijk & co while interior and exterior lines are designed by Wally in collaboration with Santa Maria Magnolfi. With a design that offers the comfort of a cruising yacht while maintaining the performance of a racing boat, Galma is characterized by the 22.6-ft telescopic keel and an all-carbon hull that has been painted in light metallic blue.

Other highlights of Galma include an 860-sq-ft full-beam cockpit with seating and dining for up to 15 people, as well as an open-plan raised saloon. Galma can accommodate up to eight guests overnight, with five crew members.

A keen yachtsman and an accomplished sailor in his early years, Greg's yachting industry understanding, exceptional level of experience and intimate knowledge of the Asia Pacific Region will ensure his success as a member of the company.

Born and raised in Denmark, Steen began his maritime career as a deck officer cadet before transitioning to shipbroking in Copenhagen. His passion for sailing led him to a successful yacht brokerage career in France, starting in 1991. With extensive experience as a yacht captain, refit project manager, and paint consultant, Steen returned to yacht sales in 1996, working with some of the top brokerage firms.

Now with SuperYachtsMonaco, he continues to leverage his extensive experience. Over the past 8 years, Steen has secured sales of 94% of yachts listed as Central Agencies. Fluent in four languages and based in Mallorca, he travels globally for business and leisure, and is dedicated to the HOPE Orphanage in Myanmar, which he co-founded.

Growing up on the South Coast of England, racing on the Solent, Tom comes from a yacht brokerage family. Having worked in London for 7 years, Tom has a wealth of knowledge of both motor and sailing yachts.

With a decade of yacht charter management experience and a family owned yacht for the last 25 years, Lars brings a wealth of experience to the SuperYachtsMonaco team. Based in Copenhagen, he will primarily look after our Nordic clients, focusing on charter and sales.

After 25 years of experience in the yachting world, including winning the Round Britain Power Boat Race, Vassilis joined SuperYachtsMonaco in 2012 and is based in Greece.
