RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Exam

Full details of the exam syllabus and requirements are shown in the RYA Yachtmaster Scheme Syllabus and Logbook (G158) available from the webshop (see right).

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore practical exams can be taken under sail or power and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly. The candidate or a training centre provides the boat and the RYA provides an examiner. Note: All qualifying sea time and passages must be gained on vessels appropriate to the type of exam i.e. gained in sailing vessels for a sail exam and power vessels for a power exam.

There is no formal training course leading up to the exam, but those who have not previously taken RYA courses often find it useful to book themselves in for some informal training at an RYA centre prior to their exam. This training can be tailor-made to your specific needs and helps to fill any gaps in your knowledge that may become apparent.

The exam will include an assessment of your skippering skills, boat handling, general seamanship, navigation, safety awareness and knowledge of the IRPCS, meteorology and signals.

Documented minimum sea time completed on a seagoing sailing or motor yacht (as appropriate) in the last 10 years:

which may be reduced to 25 days if the candidate already holds an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence ; ; , which may be reduced to 1250 miles if the candidate already holds an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence if the candidate already holds an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence

At least half the qualifying sea time should be gained in tidal waters and on vessels less than 24m LOA, and all seatime must be on vessels of the same discipline as the exam to be taken, i.e. sail or power.

Contact if your sea time is on a yacht greater than 24m and 500gt.

For example, an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Sail wishing to be examined for RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Power

8-12 hours for 1 candidate, 10-18 hours for 2 candidates. No more than two candidates can be examined in 24 hours and no more than four candidates can be examined in one 2 day session.

Boats used for exams

You may use your own boat or a boat that you have chartered or borrowed. You will be responsible for ensuring the boat is seaworthy and suitable for the area in which the exam takes place and equipped as shown below.

The boat used must be between 7m and 18m (LOA) and be in sound, seaworthy condition, equipped to the standard set out in the RYA Boat Safety Handbook 2nd Edition (code G103). The boat must be equipped with a full up to date set of charts and navigational publications along with working instruments and either plotter or GPS. In addition to the candidate there should be two crew on board as the examiner will not take part in the management of the boat during the exam.

There may be vessels that will meet the guidelines outlined above but by virtue of their layout, construction, handling characteristics or other factors may be unsuitable for use for an RYA Yachtmaster Practical examination. The RYA reserves the right to refuse an exam on a vessel that, in the view of the RYA Chief Examiner, will not allow the examiner to conduct an examination to the standard required by the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Qualification Panel.

Before you book your exam please check that you:

  • can provide a boat
  • have completed the required mileage and experience as skipper
  • hold an SRC (Short Range Certificate) or higher level GMDSS radio operators qualification
  • hold a valid first aid certificate
  • have read the syllabus in RYA Logbook (G158)
  • have read and comply with the pre-requisites above.

Additionally if not on the boat, you will need to bring to the exam:

  • laminated or waterproof charts
  • GPS set (may be hand held)
  • tide tables
  • pilotage information for the local area, eg pilot books, port information etc
  • plotting instruments.
  • Photographic ID card or document, such as a passport or driving licence

If you need your Certificate of Competence in order to work on board a commercial craft subject the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed .

JPMA & Hoylake Sailing School

JPMA & Hoylake Sailing School

(john percival marine associates), what are the requirements for a master less than 200gt coc.

The MCA have brought out the Master (code vessels <200gt), OOW (Yachts less than <500gt) CoC for those who hold a Yachtmaster Offshore or Yachtmaster Ocean, and would like to hold an MCA Master CoC.

There are 2 variants of the Master <200gt: ‘Limited to 150 miles from safe haven’ & ‘Unlimited area’.

If you hold the Yachtmaster Offshore CoC, you will get the limited Master <200gt CoC, if you hold the Yachtmaster Ocean CoC, you will get the unlimited Master <200gt CoC.

If your final aim is to achieve the Master <500gt or Master <3000gt CoC, you will need to have the OOW <3000gt CoC before you can move on to the Master CoCs.

In order to gain a Master <200gt CoC, you will need to do some classroom training, some sea service, and finally an oral exam.

Required Service:

You need to have 6 months of sea service on vessels of any size, whilst holding an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or IYT Master of Yachts Limited certificate.

Sea Service Verification Process – please click here to read about new regulations.

The courses you must undertake for Master <200gt are:

STCW Basic Safety Week certificates (PST or RYA Basic Sea Survival/PSSR/Elementary First Aid/Basic Fire Fighting) RYA or IYT Yachtmaster Offshore or Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased & Practical certs (either sail or power). These need to be  Commercially Endorsed NOTE: you don’t need to have a shorebased Yachtmaster certificate if your Yachtmaster CoC was issued before 31st July 2003 GMDSS ROC (if YM Offshore is used) or GMDSS GOC (if YM Ocean is used) certificate ENG1 Medical certificate Human Element Leadership & Management (Operational) certificate

Updating Training for CoC applications – anyone serving on board ship, who holds any of the following certificates must, as of 1st January 2017, have documentary evidence of either completing the training course or updating training within the last 5 years:

  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (CPSC & RB)
  • Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (PFRB)
  • Basic Fire Fighting
  • Advanced Fire Fighting

Applying for an NoE:

To do the final oral exam for Master <200gt, you will need a Notice of Eligibility. This document is issued once the MCA have assessed your eligibility, and an oral exam cannot be booked until the NoE is issued.

Your service needs to be proved with 2 forms of evidence for each vessel on which you are claiming service time. Usually a Testimonial and a Certificate of Discharge. If you have a discharge book, this can be used with a testimonial for each vessel, or if you are a member of the PYA they will attest your PYA logbook.

You must send a form of ID with your application. You can send a copy of your passport, signed by your Captain and with their CoC number noted, but you can also send any form of National ID – birth certificate or Discharge Book are usually easier to cope without!

Click here to view MSN 1858 (the testimonials and certificate of discharge can be found as annexes of the M Notice on pages 33-37)

Update to Electronic NoE application process & online oral exams

You will need to download the application form . You must complete the form and send all of your original certificates to the MCA. The NoE will be processed in about 28 days. Once the NoE is issued you are deemed eligible to take the oral exam.

JPMA offers oral preparation courses for the Master <200gt oral exam. Click here for details.

iyt yachtmaster offshore requirements

The IYT Worldwide Yachtmaster Offshore certificate is a recreational certificate of competency to command sailing and/or power vessels up to 24 metres in length up to 150 nm offshore. It is a comprehensive theory and live aboard course consisting of five days classroom theory and a practical component of six days for sail including the practical on the water examination. The minimum age to obtain this certification is 18. Candidates must either hold a recognised VHF Radio Operators Certificate or must take the full IYT VHF-SRC Marine Communications course .

The courses are designed to provide the highest standard of maritime education for the recreational yachtsman and woman and for those who are serious about obtaining the best nautical qualifications available. They are ideal for those who greatly want to expand their knowledge and experience and increase their confidence in commanding a yacht. For those who are taking the courses, completion of the five-day STCW Basic Safety training courses is not required but highly recommended. The five-day STCW course covers Firefighting, Sea Survival, First Aid and Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities.

It is important to understand that an IYT certificate is a qualification that can be used across the globe. Therefore, unlike other training organisations, IYT insists on an understanding of IALA Regulations in Areas A & B, weather systems in the North & Southern hemispheres, tidal calculations for the Mediterranean and North America and the effects of tropical revolving storms.

Yachtmaster courses are not for beginners. This six-day comprehensive high-level shore based course includes assessment papers and written examinations. Candidates are advised that a considerable amount of private study and varied cruising experience is required in addition to the formal instruction provided.

Certificate Limitations

  • Command of a vessel up to 24 meters in length,
  • IYT’s Yachtmaster Offshore Sail Certificate covers command of a sailing vessel with a sail area of greater than 80 square metres/861 square feet
  • up to 150 miles offshore
  • not for commercial use

What are the minimum entry requirements to apply for the IYT Yachtmaster Offshore course?

1. 50 days on board a yacht at sea as an active crew member . A day is defined as a period of 24 consecutive hours. Parts of a day may be included in this total, but a day is not invalidated by a candidate leaving the yacht for a few hours during a cruise. The term “at sea” is defined as being on a vessel outside of any harbour – natural or artificial – in which a cruising yacht could secure or anchor for a prolonged period of time.

2. Have logged 3,000 miles in a yacht while cruising at sea. This mileage must be logged on genuine cruises or passages but not short day trips. At least 2,000 miles must have been completed on coastal voyages and not ocean crossings. It is important that the candidate has considerable time of actual vessel handling.

3. Thirty hours on watch at night underway as an active member of a yacht’s crew. For at least six hours of this night time experience, the candidate must have been acting as the vessel’s captain/watchleader. “Night,” in this context, is defined as the time between sunset and sunrise.

4. A current medical examination and a colour blindness eyesight examination, which allows the participant to safely perform the relevant duties on a yacht, including being able to see and distinguish lights and signals of other vessels and navigational marks in typical weather conditions without risk to him/herself, other crew members or the safe operation of the vessel.

5. A six-hour VHF Radio Operators course covering the general rules and procedures for the safe operation of a VHF marine radio. If you do not have a valid VHF certificate this course may be conducted on board the yacht or in the classroom prior to joining the practical course.

Minimum sea time must have been met prior to the final examination .

What does the exam consist of?

Written theory examinations will occur during the course. The final examination is an oral and practical test on board a yacht. Candidates must demonstrate that they have sufficient ability to handle, dock, and anchor the boat with a required level of confidence. Candidates can expect to be examined on any subject contained within the syllabus and to be questioned on any of their yachting experience to date.

In the event that the examiner considers an examinee not to have achieved the required standards, a certificate will not be issued. In this case, a confidential report will be sent to the candidate outlining the reason or reasons for failure and suggesting remedial action that could lead to the successful completion of the course. Completion of the IYT Worldwide Yachtmaster Offshore course is not a guarantee of passing the examination and receiving your certificate.

How do I apply for enrolment?

In order to apply for the IYT Worldwide Yachtmaster certification courses, a detailed yachting resume must be sent to us for evaluation.

Candidates may sit the shore-based course prior to having all the above requirements.

Verification of the above yachting experience must be original and signed by the skipper of the yacht in which the candidate was sailing. Candidates claiming sea time during times when they were acting as skipper may sign their own entries but independent verification may be required and checked by IYT Worldwide.

All of the courses and criteria must be fulfilled before a candidate may apply to take the final on-board examination.

Duration: 5 days theory, shorebased; 6 days practical (liveaboard) Cost: 1900 € (includes exams fees; certification; accomodation liveaboard

  • Certificate Renewal & Replacement

All IYT Worldwide certificates, including instructor certificates, require renewal (revalidation) every five years.

Two of the most frequent questions we receive are: “How do I replace a lost, stolen or damaged certificate?” and “How do i renew my certificate?”

You will find the instructions for renewing (revalidating) and obtaining a replacement (duplicate) below.

Please note that if you wish to revalidate early you can only revalidate up to 6 months prior to the expiration date of your certificate. Should you choose to revalidate in advance you will not lose any time; your new card will show an issue date matching the expiry of the existing card. The new card will then be valid for another 5 years from this date. If you revalidate after the certificate has expired, your new card will show an issue date from the date that your order is processed.

If your certificate has been lost, damaged or stolen we are happy to provide a duplicate. There is no need to contact the school to do this on your behalf.

“ Please note that IYT are not liable for any incorrect data entered into student profiles. Therefore, please check your profile data thoroughly. If a certificate is issued with incorrect data (e.g. spelling, date of birth), the creator of the profile will be liable for the replacement costs of the corrected certificates.” IMPORTANT NOTE: IYT will not tolerate fraudulent activity, nor the tampering of certificates (IYT or other), and the submission of such will result in the cancellation of your IYT certificate(s). In addition, students found submitting tampered documentation or certificates to IYT will be banned from taking any IYT courses in the future.  If tampered medical or seatime is presented to IYT for Master of Yachts revalidation, IYT will cancel the certificate(s) and may notify the MCA.

PLEASE NOTE: Diveboat Coxswain, Dive Boat Mate & Dive Boat Operations Specialist – we no longer offer these qualification, however, we will revalidate.  Please contact us at [email protected] and tell us that you would like to revalidate and provide your preferred shipping method, airmail which we cannot trace or guarantee or UPS courier which we recommend.

Diveboat Master – we no longer offer this qualification and will not revalidate. We will substitute with the Diveboat Mate Certificate.  Please contact us at [email protected] if you would like to proceed and obtain the Diveboat Mate Certificate and tell us that you would like to revalidate and provide your preferred shipping method, airmail which we cannot trace or guarantee or UPS courier which we recommend.

Why is renewal required?

As part of our Quality Management System, all command level certificates are now required to be renewed just as one must renew a driver’s license, pilot’s license and passport. Renewal is imperative to ensure that students are still eligible to hold the existing license, and for security purposes to assist in the detection of fraudulent certificates. Students are able to renew their certificates on our website.

Reasons to renew:

  • Most IYT Worldwide certificates are mandated by various governments to be renewed every five years, therefore, it is a requirement that we must adhere to.
  • Students can get updates on new rules or regulations that have come into place since they were certified.
  • E-learning updates will be available through IYT online.
  • Any change of address, email, ID number or other information can be amended when renewing.
  • If a student does not renew we will assume that they are no longer active sailors and can be removed from our database.
  • If a student has been involved in an accident due to their own fault or illegal behaviour, we reserve the right not to renew their certificate.
  • If a national government agency, marine police or administration has good reason for a candidate’s certificate to be withdrawn or asks for it not to be renewed in the interests of public safety, IYT can do so at this time.
  • For security purposes to assist in the detection of fraudulent certificates.

Do I have to renew my Master of Yachts Limited if I hold a Master of Yachts Unlimited Certificate of Competency?

Technically the answer is no as the Master of Yachts Unlimited is a higher level than the Master of Yachts Limited.  However , The Master of Yachts Limited is proof that one can command a vessel up to 200 tons, Power or Sail or Power & Sail. The Master of Yachts Unlimited is proof that one can navigate using a sextant offshore but does not state whether it is Power or Sail.  Most insurance companies want to see the Master of Yachts Limited and not the Unlimited which is why both are recommended to be kept current.

Important Notice Regarding VHF Certificate Expiry Dates

It has come to our attention that we haven’t formally addressed the expiry dates of our paper VHF certificates issued before June 1 st , 2013. There was no expiry date printed on the certificates at that time. We have sent out a school notice on April 15, 2013 notifying schools that as of June 1st, 2013 all our certificates will require revalidation every 5 years.

Unfortunately, we neglected to address the fact that prior VHF certificates issued without an expiration date now also expire after 5 years as we have automated our system which now requires expiration.  This is not unlike what the IMO have done with Basic STCW Certificates for professional use.  Prior to January 1 st , 2017, Basic STCW certificates had no expiration date, however, the IMO have now imposed expiration on those certificates.  We are sorry for the inconvenience but all the VHF paper certificates that were issued without an expiry date will now have to be revalidated every 5 years. We hope you understand the necessity of this requirement as we need to have consistency among all our certificates.
